Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I keep going back to this quote from Kobe Bryant.
- 0:03Speaker 1: He said, the most important thing is to try and
- 0:06Speaker 1: inspire people so that they can be great in whatever
- 0:10Speaker 1: they want to do. Hey, Hurdler's Emily Abadi here checking
- 0:27Speaker 1: back in with another installment of Hurdle Moment from Hurdle,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a wellness focused podcast where I sit down with inspiring
- 0:34Speaker 1: individuals to talk about everything from their big wins to
- 0:37Speaker 1: how they've gotten through some of life's toughest moments. With
- 0:40Speaker 1: Hurdle Moment, I want to get a little bit more
- 0:42Speaker 1: granular with my mission to inspire you to be your
- 0:45Speaker 1: best self, move with intention, and have some fun along
- 0:50Speaker 1: the way. Now, it's been a really tough week. On
- 0:54Speaker 1: Friday night, I was in my apartment finishing up Monday's
- 0:57Speaker 1: episode of Hurdle when I got the news of the
- 0:59Speaker 1: past of Lyla Johna. She was a CEO of Samosaurus
- 1:04Speaker 1: and Luxmi episode fifty four of the podcast, and I'll
- 1:07Speaker 1: link to that in the show notes. It feels like
- 1:10Speaker 1: yesterday I was sitting down with her in this small
- 1:13Speaker 1: studio space near twenty third Street, and I was just
- 1:15Speaker 1: so in awe of absolutely everything she was, everything she
- 1:20Speaker 1: was doing, how much she was giving to other people,
- 1:24Speaker 1: especially those less fortunate than her. And then I'm laying
- 1:27Speaker 1: in my hotel bed here in Denver and a friend
- 1:29Speaker 1: texted me the news about Kobe Bryant and the helicopter crash,
- 1:33Speaker 1: and I just was so beside myself. It's hard. It's
- 1:38Speaker 1: hard when you feel like there's just nothing you can
- 1:41Speaker 1: do about it. It's hard when we go looking for
- 1:43Speaker 1: some sort of explanation and there isn't one. On Saturday,
- 1:47Speaker 1: I was about eight miles into my fourteen mile long
- 1:50Speaker 1: run and I found myself just like on the brink
- 1:53Speaker 1: of tears, and I kept asking myself, why why do
- 1:58Speaker 1: these bad things happen to good people? I just felt
- 2:02Speaker 1: so tired and powerless, and I started to thinking as
- 2:06Speaker 1: I picked up my piace again, what is it that
- 2:08Speaker 1: I want my legacy to be? I mean, if you
- 2:11Speaker 1: open up any social media app right this second, you'll
- 2:14Speaker 1: see endless quotes from so many people that have just
- 2:17Speaker 1: gone too soon, tidbits that they leave a serious impact.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I keep going back to this quote from Kobe Bryant.
- 2:24Speaker 1: He said the most important thing is to try and
- 2:28Speaker 1: inspire people so that they can be great in whatever
- 2:31Speaker 1: they want. To do for me. Well, that sums it up,
- 2:35Speaker 1: which is why I really want to ruminate on this
- 2:37Speaker 1: idea of legacy for today's hurdle Moment. Today, I'm asking
- 2:42Speaker 1: the question, what is it that you want your legacy
- 2:44Speaker 1: to be and what can you do with the time
- 2:47Speaker 1: that you have while you have it to make a
- 2:49Speaker 1: lasting impact, Because that's important, right. You don't need to
- 2:55Speaker 1: be an elite athlete or a top CEO or hold
- 2:59Speaker 1: some sort of world record to leave a legacy. Before
- 3:03Speaker 1: I get into it, thank you to my sponsor Beam
- 3:06Speaker 1: for bringing you this week's hurdle moment. I've had some
- 3:10Speaker 1: trouble sleeping from the night lately and just waking up
- 3:12Speaker 1: feeling anxious and my thoughts are going and before I
- 3:15Speaker 1: know it, and hour's gone by and it's like three
- 3:18Speaker 1: fourteen am. But when I started integrating Beam's Dream Blend,
- 3:23Speaker 1: which tastes like an upgraded hot chocolate and includes CBD, elthianine, melatonin,
- 3:28Speaker 1: and magnesium into my routine, well, I'll tell you this,
- 3:31Speaker 1: I'm not up in the middle of the night anymore.
- 3:33Speaker 1: And for that I am so grateful now that Beam
- 3:37Speaker 1: Blend it's a part of my nighttime wind down. Routine

- 4:03Speaker 1: just want to say Hi, I'm here for you. Reach
- 4:06Speaker 1: out to me. It's Emily at hurdle dot us. And
- 4:09Speaker 1: with that, let's get to hurdling. What do you want
- 4:21Speaker 1: your legacy to be? It's a really thought provoking question.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I was watching Cheer on Netflix like everybody else, and
- 4:29Speaker 1: one of the girls she was saying that she didn't
- 4:31Speaker 1: really mind if no one that came after her on
- 4:34Speaker 1: the team knew who she was. Hey, if that's how
- 4:38Speaker 1: you feel, then that's how you feel. But here's the
- 4:41Speaker 1: thing I know in my gut that I want to
- 4:45Speaker 1: be remembered as a good person. I want to do good.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I want to be known as someone who cares about others,
- 4:53Speaker 1: someone who makes something tangible that can help other people.
- 4:59Speaker 1: I want to lead a legacy. Today, I'm talking through
- 5:02Speaker 1: how to do just that with the help of some
- 5:05Speaker 1: really great advice that I've been offered along the way.
- 5:08Speaker 1: First up, give others. The gift of time. Giving is
- 5:12Speaker 1: a really powerful pathway to lasting happiness and positive personal growth. Sure,
- 5:18Speaker 1: giving money or some sort of tangible donation, that's one
- 5:22Speaker 1: thing that's great, but the gift of time is so important.
- 5:27Speaker 1: We don't always have the same amount of money to offer,
- 5:30Speaker 1: but what we do have is the ability to offer
- 5:33Speaker 1: up our person, to offer up our physical being to
- 5:37Speaker 1: help others. Maybe it's a few hours a month, volunteering
- 5:41Speaker 1: on the weekend, or maybe it's a couple days a year,
- 5:44Speaker 1: whatever it is that works for you, I encourage you
- 5:48Speaker 1: to look for the right way to give back in
- 5:51Speaker 1: your community and beyond. I've been there. I've had opportunities
- 5:55Speaker 1: to give that have come at the wrong time, that
- 5:57Speaker 1: have felt like a little bit of a hassle, just
- 5:59Speaker 1: because my skull dual life it feels chaotic. But I
- 6:02Speaker 1: promise you will never regret taking the time to show
- 6:07Speaker 1: up for others. Just like a good workout, it can
- 6:10Speaker 1: feel a little bit daunting heading into the experience, but
- 6:14Speaker 1: when you walk away, you feel better knowing that you
- 6:17Speaker 1: did something good. When you give to others, you're feeding
- 6:22Speaker 1: your own soul in the process, and you're making an impact.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Next up, stay kind Ah, It's really interesting what happens
- 6:32Speaker 1: when you treat people well. I know that sounds kind
- 6:35Speaker 1: of silly, right. The other day, I was in a
- 6:37Speaker 1: bit of a rush. I was trying to get into
- 6:39Speaker 1: a we work to do some work, and I forgot
- 6:41Speaker 1: my key cards, so I signed in on the iPad
- 6:44Speaker 1: and for one reason or another, it just didn't go through,
- 6:46Speaker 1: despite having a registration email on my phone to show.
- 6:49Speaker 1: The nice man sitting at the front desk. He asked
- 6:52Speaker 1: that I called upstairs so that the we work team
- 6:54Speaker 1: could put me in the system, and it felt to
- 6:56Speaker 1: be honest, like a hassle, and so admittedly I gave
- 7:00Speaker 1: him a little bit of an attitude. After all of
- 7:03Speaker 1: a sudden, done I was on the phone, I had
- 7:04Speaker 1: this moment where it hit me that I was like, Wow,
- 7:07Speaker 1: you really didn't need to approach him like that. And
- 7:09Speaker 1: so after everything was taken care of and I got
- 7:12Speaker 1: off the phone and I had the QR code, the
- 7:14Speaker 1: scan at the front desk. I looked at him and
- 7:17Speaker 1: I said, I'm sorry, you didn't deserve me to give
- 7:19Speaker 1: you that attitude. And he was so surprised that I
- 7:22Speaker 1: would even take the time to greet him with that kindness,
- 7:26Speaker 1: to offer him that courtesy, and it felt really good.
- 7:30Speaker 1: It goes back to this quote that we hear so often.
- 7:33Speaker 1: People may forget what you said or what you did,
- 7:35Speaker 1: but they'll never forget how you made them feel. We
- 7:39Speaker 1: have the opportunity every single day to approach other people
- 7:43Speaker 1: with kindness, and it's hard. Some days. I get it.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Like I said, I was just there, but usually saying
- 7:50Speaker 1: something nice, offering someone a smile, lending someone in ear
- 7:53Speaker 1: it doesn't have to feel so hard. What I've noticed,
- 7:56Speaker 1: as I've consciously made kindness one of my important stressed
- 8:00Speaker 1: values over the past couple of years is that it
- 8:03Speaker 1: becomes easier. It sounds a little silly when I say
- 8:06Speaker 1: that out loud, but these instances, like the front desk
- 8:08Speaker 1: man at we work, you realize just how much value
- 8:12Speaker 1: your positivity can bring to someone else, how it can
- 8:16Speaker 1: completely change their day. Now, I'm not saying that we
- 8:19Speaker 1: should be kind because we're looking for something in return.
- 8:22Speaker 1: No that's not it at all, But rather, it feels
- 8:25Speaker 1: good to be good. That in itself is the reward.
- 8:29Speaker 1: It feels right to offer that outlet, to act with
- 8:32Speaker 1: positive intention. My next tip for leaving a lasting legacy
- 8:39Speaker 1: is to be authentically you. Without authenticity, we have nothing
- 8:44Speaker 1: to fall back on. When you are your true self,
- 8:47Speaker 1: that's when you have the opportunity to connect with other
- 8:49Speaker 1: individuals on a deeper level. It doesn't matter if what
- 8:53Speaker 1: you have to say is the popular opinion. What matters
- 8:56Speaker 1: is that you're telling your story. You're offering your honest truth.
- 9:00Speaker 1: I posted something the other night to my Instagram story
- 9:02Speaker 1: about how I feel like life is just a lot lately.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I feel like everyone I come into contact has made
- 9:07Speaker 1: some sort of point about January feeling like it's been
- 9:10Speaker 1: seven months long. Work feels like a lot lately, And
- 9:15Speaker 1: in exchange with a friend, I said to him that
- 9:18Speaker 1: even though the grind really does just feel like a
- 9:21Speaker 1: grind these past few weeks, something tells me that it's
- 9:24Speaker 1: all paying off. He asked me something important, He said,
- 9:28Speaker 1: what does paying off mean to you? It really made
- 9:31Speaker 1: me think. I told him that I wanted to leave
- 9:34Speaker 1: an impact and well that goes back to this whole
- 9:37Speaker 1: legacy thing. Me being authentic with you is in my eyes,
- 9:41Speaker 1: a way to open the door to real conversations, to
- 9:45Speaker 1: give others who might feel self conscious about being upfront
- 9:48Speaker 1: the go ahead to do so. There is only one, Hugh,
- 9:54Speaker 1: What a beautiful opportunity, right, I keep revisiting a prompt
- 9:58Speaker 1: from this book I'm reading, Ask me, who are the
- 10:01Speaker 1: people that you admire to leave a lasting legacy? I'd
- 10:05Speaker 1: say that it's really important to be able to answer
- 10:07Speaker 1: that question, to have role models to look up to,
- 10:11Speaker 1: who have paved the way, who have inspired us to
- 10:13Speaker 1: be better humans. And so today, along with the other
- 10:18Speaker 1: words that I am leaving you with, I encourage you
- 10:20Speaker 1: to write that one down as well, to ask yourself
- 10:24Speaker 1: who inspires me? Why do they inspire me? And then
- 10:29Speaker 1: go a little bit deeper. What is it that you
- 10:32Speaker 1: want to be remembered for? What does paying off really
- 10:36Speaker 1: mean to you? Now? I'm not talking into this microphone
- 10:40Speaker 1: under the impression that you got it all figured out.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I sure as hell don't. But by taking the time
- 10:45Speaker 1: to stop and reflect, well, that's how we get to
- 10:48Speaker 1: where we want to be, That's how we leave an impact.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I want to end today's episode with a reminder, be
- 10:58Speaker 1: where your feed are. Take so much time often worrying
- 11:01Speaker 1: about what could be, worrying how things are being perceived,
- 11:04Speaker 1: that we forget that we have the opportunity to be
- 11:06Speaker 1: fully present. A listener sent me this bee where your
- 11:10Speaker 1: feet are reminder while I was on the treadmill, admittedly
- 11:12Speaker 1: struggling this morning, and it reminded me to be present
- 11:16Speaker 1: in the wake of all this chaos, to show up today.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Take that opportunity to show up, to keep playing the
- 11:26Speaker 1: groundwork for your legacy. At Emily a Body at Hurdle Podcast,
- 11:32Speaker 1: Another Hurdle Conquered. Keep your chain up, everyone, and I'll
- 11:36Speaker 1: catch you next time.
