- 0:00I guess it's a little bit of a midday grind reunion.
- 0:02It was Martin and Marlow, I think, during the pandemic,
- 0:06right? Didn't we tape a lot of stuff?
- 0:08Everything we've tried, Chuck, has been really good.
- 0:10And then it just fades into the ozone.
- 0:13Just disappeared. But now you, you sort of live on
- 0:17the Internet. You're everywhere.
- 0:19You're breaking down politics, you're breaking down crew chief
- 0:23changes. I can't keep up with you.
- 0:25You're kind of on the radio, but you're not.
- 0:28You've got Kit. What have you been doing, buddy?
- 0:31Great to see you, Martin. Great to be here on whatever
- 0:34this show is. Yeah.
- 0:35This just this just reminded me of when you have a guest on the
- 0:38radio and you say and joining us now instead of like the token,
- 0:43how we doing? Like great, thank you.
- 0:44Thanks for having me. You just start in with a
- 0:46question and you say, hey, let's talk about this game tonight.
- 0:49You've been covering this team for a long time, and then they
- 0:51start with, hey, thanks for having me.
- 0:53Great to be on your show. Yeah, about that.
- 0:56So I never know which way to go. Hey, how are you, Charlie?
- 0:59How are you? Good to see you.
- 1:01OK, it's funny you say that. Now I'll I'll, I'll change
- 1:04topics. So we have this political
- 1:06podcast with Eric Messersmith who, you know, great guy lives
- 1:10out there in LA and I usually start the show with just a hello
- 1:15and this is really inside baseball.
- 1:17But YouTube is all about hitting the hole, so people would rather
- 1:22just have an immediate topic then the minute of hey, how you
- 1:26doing? And all that.
- 1:27So it's kind of funny. Yesterday I was going to have
- 1:29the opener just be how you doing?
- 1:32We were talking about Mitch McConnell.
- 1:34I did 2 questions in one, which you're not supposed to do.
- 1:38And then Eric kind of said hello.
- 1:41And then he talked about Mitch McConnell for 10 straight
- 1:43minutes. So he he answered both for 10
- 1:46minutes and I asked both, which is bad, but I guess it worked.
- 1:49Maybe. So the hello has been taken care
- 1:52of. It's a Martin Marlowe midday
- 1:53grind. The reason I texted you
- 1:55yesterday, I saw that Richard Lewis News, and I was stunned
- 1:59because our family's been watching Curb Your Enthusiasm
- 2:02lately, right? With all the Larry David and his
- 2:05buddy Richard Lewis. I didn't watch it the other
- 2:07night, but apparently they were joking about him leaving Larry
- 2:11in his will. Now granted, that was probably
- 2:13recorded What, like a year ago? I mean, it's probably not
- 2:16recent. I had no idea it was sick, but
- 2:18the first thing I thought of, he was supposed to be on the show
- 2:21with us. He follows you on Twitter.
- 2:24You messaged him. We were going to talk Buckeyes.
- 2:27He's no high. Richard Lewis doesn't feel like
- 2:30an Ohio State guy to me. Feels like you go somewhere on
- 2:33the East Coast. But he didn't.
- 2:35He write you back and say, oh, I'm working on some stuff with
- 2:38Curb right now, Let's do it down the road.
- 2:40And by gum, we never had him. I know you want me to read it
- 2:44for you because when you texted me yesterday, I didn't even know
- 2:47about the news which obviously sucks.
- 2:50But then I had to go way back. So this was.
- 2:53And by the way, I think, look I'm I'm not that funny of a guy.
- 2:56He's a professional comedian was.
- 2:58I think it had to be me tweeting about the Buckeyes over the
- 3:01years that somehow he started following me.
- 3:04So this was February 25th, 2017. I say hi Richard.
- 3:09Figured I'd give it a shot and reach out since we follow each
- 3:11other. I have a sports talk radio show
- 3:13in Saint Louis from 12:00 to 3:00 Central, Monday through
- 3:16Friday. Would love to have you on some
- 3:18time to talk sports, Curb, comedy, whatever.
- 3:21Let me know if you're interested.
- 3:22Thanks, he replies. I think I'll wait, bro, till
- 3:26Curb is closer to premiere. Doing some more acting now.
- 3:29Thanks. So I follow up then.
- 3:32November 30th, I think this is pretty good.
- 3:35I asked him. He said no.
- 3:37So I waited what? March, April, May, June, July,
- 3:40August, September, October. I mean, I waited nine months to
- 3:44follow up again and I asked him again and he said he called me.
- 3:48CI like to see I'm on tour and overloaded for now.
- 3:52Please understand Richard Lewis. I said no worries, all good.
- 3:55I've been enjoying Curb. Thanks.
- 3:57And I ended it there, see if I was one of these people that
- 3:59just I would keep bugging him until he came on.
- 4:02I asked him once, he said no and he was very polite.
- 4:05And then I waited nine months, asked again and then I never
- 4:07corresponded again with him. But he was very nice and I was a
- 4:10big fan. I think Curb is probably my my
- 4:13favorite show of all time, certainly my favorite comedy,
- 4:17and it's got staying power. It's been on for what, almost 20
- 4:20years? I know they take breaks, but
- 4:22huge fan of that show and his work and I always thought he and
- 4:27Larry's dynamic was great together.
- 4:30I've also kind of dove into the behind the scenes of Curb where
- 4:33Larry will talk about how they script the show with an outline,
- 4:37but they don't really have a script.
- 4:39And he said that Richard was the one guy that would always want
- 4:42to know the script so he could kind of come in with some some
- 4:45pre written jokes with which Larry didn't like.
- 4:49So I thought that dynamic was funny.
- 4:50And then also you've seen some of these clips.
- 4:52What I love about Curb is when they are improving and AD
- 4:57libbing and they genuinely make each other laugh and you can
- 5:00tell some of the exchanges between Larry and Richard Lewis
- 5:04where they're kind of going off the cuff and and you can tell
- 5:07their laughter is genuine. That's what I find really
- 5:09interesting. I go back to Richard Lewis being
- 5:12on Letterman like when I was a kid, and you would look, I think
- 5:16you would look in the paper and it would list who was on that
- 5:19night, like on Letterman's show. And if it was Jerry Seinfeld or
- 5:23Jay Leno or Richard Lewis like those young comedians, you would
- 5:27TuneIn to see him because they always brought something.
- 5:29And this is, it's kind of like the Jim Rome have a take, don't
- 5:33suck. When you have a guest on your
- 5:34podcast, your radio, you hate it if they mail it in and those
- 5:38guys would always show up. Leno was great at that too.
- 5:42I wasn't as big a fan later on, but when he would come on letter
- 5:45he always had a a bit he was funny and Richard would always
- 5:48just like torment. With Dave, I got to find some of
- 5:51those clips. I could spend all day doing
- 5:52this, but he would do stuff like Dave get get the camera.
- 5:56I don't want to look at the camera.
- 5:57I don't want to be seen And Dave like, well, it's kind of tricky.
- 6:00We we're ATV show. We need a camera and like, I
- 6:02just love Richard Lewis. Back then he was so neurotic.
- 6:05He was Woody Allen, but funnier. You know I like Woody Allen but
- 6:09I was overly funny. He was a great movie maker
- 6:13filmmaker, whatever. But like Richard Lewis had that
- 6:15same kind of neurotic vibe and I just, I didn't know he was sick.
- 6:20I guess he had Parkinson's right And that recently Parkinson's
- 6:23they had a heart attack. Larry's comment yesterday that I
- 6:27read, he said Richard Lewis had the ability to be the funniest
- 6:31guy in the room and the sweetest.
- 6:34And he said, but now he broke. Now he he said, now you've made
- 6:38me cry and I will never forgive you.
- 6:41And it sounded like Larry was, like, genuinely mad.
- 6:44It would sound like something Larry would say, but also maybe
- 6:47some real emotion. Like you can't picture Larry
- 6:50David being sad, can't you can't picture like at a funeral for
- 6:53Richard Lewis. I picture Larry instead of
- 6:56sobbing, missing his friend, I picture him saying why are they
- 7:00parking the cars over there? They shouldn't be parked.
- 7:02Like, Can you imagine him actually being normal and
- 7:05serious? Well, it's funny you say that
- 7:08because I actually thought of that same thing when I I heard
- 7:12the news and I saw that same quote that you're talking about.
- 7:15And obviously this is the last season of Curb now.
- 7:18You never know could could they come back?
- 7:20And I think this is something, even though it's a death and
- 7:22it's very sad. I mean, these are comedians and
- 7:25their life was humor to me. I mean, the perfect way would, I
- 7:29don't know if you have to do a whole another season, but like,
- 7:32I feel like Larry David could perfectly do an episode of Curb
- 7:37based on Richard Lewis actually dying and having the funeral.
- 7:42And that could be a story arc. And it would be a great way to
- 7:46show and pay tribute to Richard Lewis, but also be really funny,
- 7:49which you'd think, look, Richard Lewis would probably want it
- 7:52that way, right? Yeah, I could see that too.
- 7:54I I don't. I mean the fact that the show's
- 7:57over or is ending. I'm like why they would just
- 8:01they could come back in five years and say it's it debuted in
- 8:042000. It's been on for 24 years.
- 8:08But it doesn't feel like it's really been on that long because
- 8:10they would just disappear when it first got going.
- 8:13My dad likes Seinfeld but my dad was really picky about comedy
- 8:18and they like, you know, you and I always talk about who do we
- 8:20like in media and in the yard. They're all Martin hates.
- 8:23Everybody hates everybody. I think I got that from my dad
- 8:25because he he didn't like any media, but he liked Seinfeld.
- 8:29So I went out to his house in Denver and I bought the box set
- 8:33of Kirby enthusiasm, like the first box that they put out and
- 8:37Kim and I were out there, my wife now dating.
- 8:40Then we went skiing for the weekend.
- 8:41So I said to my dad, oh, this is great, I got you this box set of
- 8:44Larry David. So we come back after the
- 8:47weekend and going to the airport and he gives it back to me and
- 8:50he said I just can't do it. And he said made me so
- 8:53uncomfortable and I'm like, I think some people are that way
- 8:56with Larry David that makes him uncomfortable, which reminds me
- 9:00of, and you would have probably been there.
- 9:03It was a Rams pregame show. This is 2008 glory days.
- 9:07Well, you really came in during the glory days.
- 9:09You think about how fun you came in.
- 9:12Larussa was still the manager. The Rams were still here.
- 9:15Linehan was the head coach. This is a while ago, but during
- 9:19that 2008 season, at some point, Chip and Lucia, you know the
- 9:23owners, were George's kids. And Chip Rosenblum is real big
- 9:27on the environment activists, and he's a film maker.
- 9:30Somehow they got word to us that they wanted Larry David's wife
- 9:36on the pregame show. She was in town promoting a
- 9:39movie about the environment. We got to find the footage.
- 9:42Joe Burr, our great producer Dave Dio probably has it
- 9:44somewhere on Avhs. On the Rams pregame show was
- 9:50Larry David's wife in real life and RFK Junior the guy running
- 9:55for president. Really 100%.
- 9:59Because I remember I got emails that week, people pissed off,
- 10:01like because it was about the environment.
- 10:03So all these people were mad and they said what are you doing on
- 10:06a sports show, Kilborn, You're putting these wackos from
- 10:09California on your show. You should be talking football.
- 10:12And I'm like, listen, ass hat, the team's 2 and 10, like who
- 10:15cares? Who cares?
- 10:17But in the interview, I remember we remember we would always have
- 10:19the desk. Nowadays, everybody just like
- 10:21you and I are sitting on a Zoom or like AJ Hawk, always looks
- 10:24like a prisoner of war on that McAfee show.
- 10:27But back then we actually had a set, remember, we'd have that
- 10:29giant table. They would roll it out here.
- 10:32God bless our engineers. But sitting on that set, I
- 10:36remember saying to Larry David's wife, I got to ask you know,
- 10:40'cause I'm like, you are here and you're married to Larry
- 10:43David. And I said he seemed weird and
- 10:48she said you have no idea. She said he's exactly like the
- 10:52show in real life. And I think that's that's
- 10:56probably true. Like as as uncomfortable as it
- 10:59made my dad and sometimes even watch it, I love it.
- 11:02But sometimes I get uncomfortable with the topics or
- 11:04the situation. That's 100% who he was by the
- 11:08way, RFK Junior. So I interviewed him both after
- 11:11for TV. I mean RFK has that horrible
- 11:14voice. I don't know what it is.
- 11:16I can't imitate it. But off the side we're doing the
- 11:19interview. I said so Massachusetts guy,
- 11:22probably big Patriots fan, you know, coming from that area
- 11:25around here, we don't like the Patriots.
- 11:27You know them fighting words or something stupid.
- 11:30And he said, well, it's just in in the stadium after my father
- 11:34and and DC, I'm sort of a Redskin fan.
- 11:36I'm like, the stadium is called RFK and I'm like, Oh yeah, well
- 11:42yeah, other than that, I'm sure, yeah, you're you're probably a
- 11:45big fan. But so many things happen on
- 11:47that show and we can move on. You too is probably requiring
- 11:50topic alert, Switch topics topic alert.
- 11:53Is that how it works well? No, hold on.
- 11:56No. What I what I find so great
- 11:58about the show and I've also heard Larry say that the show is
- 12:01basically him it's it's inside his brain if he really had no
- 12:08social decorum whatsoever. So in real life he thinks these
- 12:12things, but he obviously doesn't act out on all of them like he
- 12:15does for the show. But what I find so great about
- 12:19that show is everything he does. There's there's certainly a
- 12:23kernel to truth, of truth to all of that, like every little thing
- 12:27about maybe your neighbors, like your leaves go into their yard,
- 12:31or vice versa. Or the garbage, all those little
- 12:34idiosyncrasies of life. Or, like you said, parking.
- 12:37You're in a parking spot. You go there, somebody goes in
- 12:40line, they hold the door and they go in front of you at the
- 12:42coffee shop. All of those things really
- 12:44happened to all of us all the time in our daily lives, and
- 12:47they're kind of tweeners. You're like, what am I supposed
- 12:50to do? How am I supposed to act in
- 12:51those situations? And he perfectly puts them all
- 12:54into this story and makes it hilarious.
- 12:56And the most recent one I saw when he starts screaming at Siri
- 13:00and he's like, listen, you fucking bitch, I don't want to
- 13:03go there and I do that, I scream anything that's voice
- 13:07communicated where it'll say, like why don't you enter your
- 13:10password. I don't know my password and I
- 13:12just, I Kim will find me screaming at my phone saying
- 13:15assistant human person. I want to speak to somebody.
- 13:20Like that happens to me three times a week.
- 13:23And he just went nuts on that Siri, he was just screaming at
- 13:26Siri because they don't understand.
- 13:28I just want to talk to a freaking human being sometimes.
- 13:31OK, so one of the episodes that I remember that I always think
- 13:35about, I don't remember exactly how it went down, but remember
- 13:38they're going into the bathroom and the handicap stall is open
- 13:44and the other stall isn't, so there's nobody waiting.
- 13:48So Larry jumps in the handicap, but then a guy comes behind him
- 13:52in a wheelchair. But then part of the story was
- 13:54also like, somebody had a stutter and and Larry thought
- 13:58the person that had a stutter shouldn't get a handicap parking
- 14:01spot. And then at the end of the
- 14:03episode, Larry pretended to have a stutter.
- 14:05But again, so I have two kids now and you know, you have to
- 14:08help him in the bathroom and all that.
- 14:10So you'll go into a bathroom and you try to always go to the
- 14:12handicap because it's the biggest one.
- 14:14You're helping your kid. And I'm telling you, every time
- 14:16I go into a bathroom, if I choose the handicap stall, if
- 14:18nobody's there, you know, you're trying to figure out.
- 14:21But I always think of that episode of Curb.
- 14:23Yeah, I think what it is, is we all have Larry David moments
- 14:27where awkward shit happens where the person in the parking lot
- 14:31that you give him one of these, like they take your spot and
- 14:33you're like mad and then you walk into Starbucks and they're
- 14:36standing in front of you or like you need their help at a later.
- 14:40Like the person that you have some confrontation with always
- 14:44is that person later that you either are standing next to or
- 14:48you need their assistance. Or anyway.
- 14:50I love Curb. We love Richard Lewis.
- 14:52I love the fact that he's buddies with C I am now changing
- 14:56your name and my phone. From now on you will be called
- 14:59C, but he wasn't in your phone or he was a direct message
- 15:03buddy. No.
- 15:04And by the way, I I'm not trying to say, hey, he didn't get back
- 15:07to me. He wasn't on the show.
- 15:08Oh no, They didn't even know each other.
- 15:10It was just a Hail Mary because he followed me on Twitter and
- 15:13look, these guys are busy and all that, so it's all good.
- 15:16I have a bunch of those where somebody will give me a number.
- 15:19The most famous person, honestly, probably in my phone
- 15:22is, I guess is Tom Brady. No, but somebody gave it to me
- 15:27and they said it's 100%. It's like, I think it's a Tampa
- 15:29number, but I'm never going to call unless I'm really hammered
- 15:33tonight and I'm out of TV just having fun.
- 15:35But for the most part, you get a number and if you try and get
- 15:38them on, like you said, you give it a hey, how are you?
- 15:42They usually they almost all respond once.
- 15:46Hey, thanks so much for reaching out.
- 15:47Great to hear. Meanwhile, they're going, how
- 15:49the fuck did they get my number? And then all of a sudden you're
- 15:53like, well, maybe I'll try one more time and then you let it
- 15:56go. OK, so this may be a good story
- 15:59about this. It happened yesterday and you
- 16:01started. I didn't tell people, so just so
- 16:03everybody knows. So I do the NASCAR YouTube with
- 16:06with Kenny Wallace. I probably spent 8590% of my
- 16:08time on that. We have two Youtubes.
- 16:10We have a podcast platform. I do the Cardinal stuff.
- 16:13Yeah, maybe 10% of the time. And then I'm starting this
- 16:16political news podcast YouTube show with Eric Messersmith that
- 16:19we're doing once a week. So yesterday, Penny is
- 16:22interviewing William Byron, who is the Daytona 500 champion from
- 16:28just a couple weeks ago. And I always monitor these
- 16:31podcasts and whatnot. I have to edit them and all
- 16:33that. So William Byron is a big Legos
- 16:35guy. He's big into Legos.
- 16:37Like, I don't know if you saw the Exchange, He and Dale
- 16:39Earnhardt Junior putting together A4 foot Titanic, like
- 16:44the Titanic ship. I mean, this takes days and days
- 16:47and days to do these Legos. So.
- 16:51So Kenny was like, hey, can you send Charlie some some pictures
- 16:55of your Legos? And I figured, you know, 'cause
- 16:57I had already sent him the e-mail invite.
- 16:59And Kenny's like, I'll, I'll give Charlie your cell phone
- 17:02number. And look, I'm always wary or
- 17:05weary of of, you know, I don't like to use people's cell phone
- 17:07numbers, especially these athletes.
- 17:09You know, if somebody at a radio station gets the number, then
- 17:11they pass along to everybody. But it's pretty funny.
- 17:13So I I texted William Byron, who's a really nice guy.
- 17:16He's like 26. But I was like, yeah, you know,
- 17:17this is Charlie, You know, can I get those Lego pictures?
- 17:20And it was kind of funny because like later on at night last
- 17:23night, here's William Byron, this famous NASCAR driver.
- 17:27He just won the Daytona 502 weeks ago.
- 17:29And he's sending me 3 pictures that he took with his own phone,
- 17:33of his, of his Lego set. And I can even see, you know,
- 17:36how you see the reflection, you can see him, like trying to
- 17:39frame it up so he can get the picture of the Titanic.
- 17:41I just found that funny that here's the superstar guy taking
- 17:44stupid Lego pics for me for our podcast.
- 17:46And then the worst would be if you had to hey, William, could
- 17:50you retake those? Because they didn't format.
- 17:52Probably at that point. I used.
- 17:54It's fine whatever it is. No, that's the Lego thing.
- 17:58Carson, my son is 13 and he just did a a Porsche car that's
- 18:04probably the size of a table. I didn't realize how it's gotten
- 18:07really advanced now. So the fact that way, I didn't
- 18:10know that because I am not as inside NASCAR as Chuck is these
- 18:15days. I'm curious on you doing the
- 18:17politics. Are you getting anybody who's
- 18:19who said stay away from that or Marla, I used to like you?
- 18:22Or because are you opining on politics or observing?
- 18:26Have you gotten any negative feedback?
- 18:29Yes, Hey, real quick by the way on the on the Lego thing before
- 18:32I get to that. So my daughter is super into
- 18:34Legos. I just built her a Lego table
- 18:37that we bought the other day. But here's the problem with
- 18:39Legos these days, with the kids. Back in the day when we got
- 18:43Legos, at least you would have like, a bucket of Legos, like a
- 18:46big tub. Now they're trophies.
- 18:48So my daughter, she's so excited.
- 18:51She gets a Lego set. She puts it together in one
- 18:53night, but then she wants it to display in her room as a trophy.
- 18:56She never plays with it again. Whereas like when we were kids,
- 18:59you'd get, you know, a bunch of Lego sets, You'd just have that
- 19:02big bin, and then you would kind of create new things.
- 19:04She needs a new Lego set every week because she she builds it,
- 19:08she's done, and then she wants to move on to another one.
- 19:13All right, so the politics. Part.
- 19:15No. I'm just curious if you're
- 19:16getting anybody saying I don't want to hear this from you and
- 19:20although on your on 590 in the mornings you would get into
- 19:22politics there so it's not noon for you.
- 19:25Yes, and This is why. Again, it's kind of boring to
- 19:29people, but This is why I created multiple YouTube
- 19:32channels, because YouTube is all about your niche.
- 19:35So much so that I've even found like on my original channel,
- 19:39which I wanted to be all sports, it just turned into a channel
- 19:42that is all Cardinals baseball. I didn't even want it to be
- 19:45that. But like YouTube finds your
- 19:47audience for you. So I I didn't want to have
- 19:51politics on the baseball channel.
- 19:53So we we have this separate channel that actually used to be
- 19:55hockey, which is kind of funny, but we turned it into a
- 19:58political channel. But to answer your question, I I
- 20:01basically advertise the political channel on my baseball
- 20:05channel a couple times and I got a couple negative comments of
- 20:09people saying, hey. You know, I don't want this.
- 20:11I didn't come here for politics and all that.
- 20:13So I stopped doing that. So basically we're starting this
- 20:17thing from from scratch but for the audience because YouTube and
- 20:21podcast is all about your audience.
- 20:23So we have a a YouTube channel that is 100% Cardinals baseball.
- 20:27We have obviously the Kenny stuff, which is 100% Kenny
- 20:30NASCAR and racing. And then we have this news and
- 20:32politics channel which we're essentially just starting like
- 20:36two months ago. But we have to build it up and
- 20:39we have to kind of change our audience because we started with
- 20:42subscriber base that was hockey fans and now we're switching to
- 20:46politics, which is kind of funny, but we're starting, we're
- 20:49starting from scratch. And yeah, The thing is, is like,
- 20:52you know this, I mean, people are passionate about sports, but
- 20:55people are real mean about politics.
- 20:59They're very hypocritical and I love the comments and all that.
- 21:02But people get angry. I always like to, I always like
- 21:06to think about this and I look at the data though.
- 21:08If you post a video and you see how many views it gets and then
- 21:12you see how many comments, you also realize that 99% of folks
- 21:16are just watching the video and they're just not commenting.
- 21:20So you'll get some positive comments.
- 21:22But I think, I think comment sections are definitely more
- 21:24negative. But it's easy to go and look at
- 21:27the comments and go, oh, these people hate me, But then you go
- 21:30look, oh, that video got 1000 views, but there was only 6
- 21:33comments, right? So.
- 21:35So 99% of the people just watched it and we're OK and and
- 21:38didn't comment at all. Well and we give too much power
- 21:42to the folks who do comment. We look at that as sort of
- 21:45representative. And I want to give you an
- 21:46example that although I do have a funny concept in my head since
- 21:50your political channel used to be the hockey channel, I would
- 21:53like people to e-mail you and say hey Chuck who do you think
- 21:56is going to win the New Hampshire primary?
- 21:57Also do you think the Blues will trade which name it and just
- 22:00like throw random hockey shit as well as politics.
- 22:03But the comment section, this is interesting because a couple of
- 22:08weeks ago I did an interview with Travis Ford.
- 22:10He's the slew men's basketball coach.
- 22:12They're having a terrible year and most people are wondering,
- 22:16is he going to get fired? That's sort of the topic that's
- 22:19out there. So I thought, I wonder, and I
- 22:21know him fairly well and I haven't been around the team at
- 22:24all this year, bandwagon front runner.
- 22:27And so I texted him and said, would you want to talk about
- 22:30everything that's being said? You want to address some of the
- 22:32noise and all those things that are out.
- 22:33And he said, I would love that, Thank you so much.
- 22:35Can you come tomorrow? So we do the interview.
- 22:38You know, I said OK, what I remember the line of
- 22:40questioning. I said OK, what went wrong this
- 22:42year, which is a bad question because it's very open-ended.
- 22:45So then that was like a two-minute answer.
- 22:47But then I said in college basketball, you're the CEO,
- 22:49you're the GM, you pick the players.
- 22:51You know, you can't blame like the front office, It's your
- 22:53team. He said 100 percent, 100%, it's
- 22:56on me. At some point I said, do you
- 22:59think you'll, do you wonder if you'll be fired?
- 23:02Have you heard the noise? You know, and so that night my
- 23:06wife said she was watching. She said she was cringing.
- 23:08She said because you asked him if he'd be fired or if he's so
- 23:11it made her uncomfortable. And I said, well, he's a big
- 23:15boy. He can handle it, you know.
- 23:17And I said, you know, shouldn't this program be more like
- 23:19Marquette or Xavier or Creighton, you know, and be a
- 23:21tournament regular? Later, he kept saying he had a
- 23:23plan. And at the end I said, what are
- 23:26you going to tell Chris May or Doctor Costello?
- 23:28What's the point anyway? I think it was fair.
- 23:31Didn't badge him, but people. And then somebody, a couple of
- 23:36prominent boosters and alums texting me say I really enjoyed
- 23:40that great interview, Happy to hear his answers, whatever.
- 23:43But then you go online, another puff piece, another softball
- 23:48loaded with softballs. No tough questions.
- 23:51And I'm like, we asked him if he thought he was going to be
- 23:53fired. We asked him to.
- 23:54I said assess your eight years versus just this year.
- 23:57The only one I regret is I should have followed up with
- 23:59because he kept saying we've done a lot of winning.
- 24:01We turned it around and I should have said, but have you won
- 24:04enough big games? Have you done enough A10 wise
- 24:08You haven't won an A10 titles, Should have been to more
- 24:10tournaments. I could have followed up there,
- 24:12but for the most part it covered all the all the important
- 24:16topics. But if you go to my Twitter
- 24:18account, all these slew folks are saying terrible interview,
- 24:22didn't ask this, didn't ask that or whatever.
- 24:24And I'm like, you know what? I didn't respond to any of it.
- 24:27Did you just you can't give it the power.
- 24:29That's the problem. Just don't respond.
- 24:31That's the easiest thing. Well, I.
- 24:33Watched that. I thought you did a great job.
- 24:36I'm not just saying that. And you did.
- 24:37You did ask the questions you're supposed to ask.
- 24:40I mean, what else can you say? Besides, do you think you're
- 24:43going to be fired? By the way, didn't he?
- 24:45Didn't he start to cry a little bit during the interview?
- 24:48During the answer about I said, do you hear the noise, are you
- 24:53concerned at all that you'll be fired?
- 24:55And I asked him too and one if I said, have you heard anything
- 24:57from Chris May administration? But he started to cry, thinking
- 25:01about all that had happened while he was here.
- 25:05His nephew died, of course, Ford Stewen, who was his assistant
- 25:09coach, but also his, his daughter's son, you know,
- 25:13somebody he's extremely close to.
- 25:14And I think when he reflected on everything that's happened, he
- 25:17said While we're here, a lot of things have happened, many good
- 25:20things and some not so good. And he said, but the people have
- 25:22rallied around. I think that's genuine emotion.
- 25:25And here's the thing with a coach never sees, sees it the
- 25:29way like the angry fan does. They think they're about to turn
- 25:32it around. You ask an NFL coach who's 2 and
- 25:3410, and everybody's going to say, Oh my God, this guy is so
- 25:38full of shit. And I was like, no, he really
- 25:39thinks he's got this figured out.
- 25:41He really thinks there's an answer coming down the road.
- 25:44You can't tell these people that they wouldn't be successful or
- 25:47at a big position if they just thought, man, I got nothing, I
- 25:51got no answers. They really think they have
- 25:52answers. But again, I think that, well,
- 25:57it's a whole other topic we don't want.
- 25:58Do you have a Billiken channel? Is this the now, are we, are you
- 26:01switching us over? If you would please check,
- 26:03switch over to Chuck's Billiken channel for further discussion
- 26:07here. And then later tonight, we'll be
- 26:08on the Mizzou channel to talk about their disastrous SEC
- 26:12season, OK? Anyway.
- 26:15So here's another interview story.
- 26:18Quick story. People are on YouTube.
- 26:20Got to got to hit the hole. I interviewed Kelly Chase the
- 26:22other day, former Blues player diagnosed with leukemia.
- 26:26He's now in remission. It was a 29 minute interview.
- 26:30I'll bet you I talked for 40 to 50 seconds total because it was
- 26:35one of those where you just get out of the way.
- 26:38He had really long stories, emotional, interesting, and
- 26:43every once in a while I would just interject and say, did you
- 26:47feel sorry for yourself? Are you scared?
- 26:50They were like the shortest questions of it.
- 26:51And he just kept going and people would say, oh, that was a
- 26:54great interview. And I said, I really just got
- 26:56out of the way. And there are times when you
- 26:58have to do that, yeah. So we can kind of stick in the
- 27:02entertainment realm since we started with with Curb.
- 27:06I know, I don't know if you still are a a fan, but you know
- 27:09back in the day, Bill Maher, I know, I think it was several
- 27:11years ago. We both, I think we both went to
- 27:13that show. I didn't see him the most recent
- 27:15time he was in Saint Louis. I'd be interested to get your
- 27:19take on this because now it's it's kind of funny.
- 27:22I don't feel like Bill Maher has changed but the country has
- 27:25changed and so he's now you know he used to be kind of the the
- 27:29thought leader for the laughter liberals and now there's a lot
- 27:33of people on the right that are appreciating what he's saying.
- 27:35And I think in in 2024 he's he's kind of in the in the middle.
- 27:40And I bring this up because you talked about interviews and all
- 27:43that and and talking a lot or or not on an interview or podcast.
- 27:48I don't know if you ever watch his podcast Club Random where
- 27:53he's basically in his like fun house like he's got like a party
- 27:56house and he's drinking and smoking weed while he does the
- 28:00podcast. And I've always been a fan of
- 28:02Bill Maher, my wife and I. We, we don't watch as much just
- 28:05because we're busy. But we used to always watch Real
- 28:07Time on Fridays. And I'm telling you, Martin, he
- 28:11doesn't shut up. He never lets his guests speak.
- 28:16He railroads them. He interrupts them.
- 28:19Here's a guy who I've always liked his show, and I'm telling
- 28:21you, ever since he got a podcast, I like him less.
- 28:24Like because you and I have also done so many interviews and been
- 28:27interviewed. When I see somebody who's in the
- 28:30middle of a thought and they just get interrupted it, it just
- 28:34bothers me. There's podcasts where I swear
- 28:36for 90 minutes he talks 80% of the time.
- 28:40It's it's crazy. Have you have you seen his
- 28:42podcast at all? I've not.
- 28:43Watched I've listened to a lot of Club Random, it it depends on
- 28:46the guest and if it's somebody I'm really interested in.
- 28:49I started the other day with him and Martin Short, 'cause I love
- 28:51Martin Short, but I I know what you're talking about and what
- 28:54I've observed in that city now, first of all, real time on
- 28:58Friday nights, I think it's the perfect show because they've
- 29:00like, nailed the format. It's like PTI with Wilbot and
- 29:04corners. They they just got the right
- 29:05formula. It worked.
- 29:07You don't need to change it. It's kind of tightly produced in
- 29:11in that case. In Bill's case, it's the
- 29:13monologue, it's the guest, then it's the panel.
- 29:15But you interrupt the panel at some point because if it was
- 29:17just the panel, it's like watching Fox, CNN and the same
- 29:20piece. It's so boring to me.
- 29:21All these just just sitting at the table yelling, they figured
- 29:24out OK, now we'll interrupt it with like a comedy bit.
- 29:27Then we'll go back to the panel. We'll end with new rules.
- 29:29I just think the format is excellent.
- 29:32But on his podcast What I Noticed, I think he's either too
- 29:36high. I don't think he drinks a lot
- 29:38but I don't think he like the the guest will say like and
- 29:41that's when I joined the military and then the minute
- 29:43later he's like now were you ever in the military?
- 29:45I'm like I feel like he's so out of it.
- 29:48Maybe he's having fun, drinking, smoking, whatever.
- 29:51But I that's what I've observed less.
- 29:53So now I'm going to start listening for the interruptions
- 29:56but I feel like he's just, it is it is just conversation but I
- 30:01think every once in a while he doesn't.
- 30:03I think he's out of it. I don't know if he's high or he
- 30:05just you could you'll hear it like somebody will say like well
- 30:08that slice Stallone as a guest and and that's when I made
- 30:12Rocky. Wait a minute, you were in Rocky
- 30:14and it's like he's genuinely surprised like what?
- 30:18But all of these things to me are examples of everybody says
- 30:25media is changing, media is changing.
- 30:27It is. But one thing that hasn't
- 30:29changed, I mean why do people listen to any podcast for that
- 30:35matter, But you know why is Dan Levitard show is popular, The
- 30:39morning After is popular. All these shows that people
- 30:41listen, why it's just people bantering.
- 30:43It's conversation. That hasn't changed.
- 30:45So everybody says, oh, it's media is dead.
- 30:48It's like, no, it's all still people in their car listen on
- 30:52their earphone, earbuds or whatever, what they're listening
- 30:54to conversation. It might be from the New York
- 30:57Times, it might be a comedian. It might be a politician or
- 31:00whatever. That to me is.
- 31:02It's that hasn't changed. People are still flipping the
- 31:05radio on or putting on an iPhone because if if as long as it's
- 31:08entertaining banter, they're going to tune in, yeah.
- 31:12That's that's what I love about YouTube and podcast.
- 31:15Also, it's very motivating because you have a scoreboard.
- 31:19It's almost like the stock market really.
- 31:21You can look at any second during the day and see how many
- 31:25views you're getting and thus how much money you'll make.
- 31:28And like you said to me, it's it's the essence of it all is,
- 31:31is storytelling. It's telling a great story.
- 31:34And so this kind of goes back to the the William Byron thing I I
- 31:38mentioned earlier, William Byron of of Nashville.
- 31:42Charlie's friends with the Daytona 500 winner.
- 31:44I get it. OK see.
- 31:47No. But what I'm?
- 31:48Saying though is like, here's a guy who's a young, good looking
- 31:51kid. He's one of the best drivers in
- 31:53NASCAR. He just won the Daytona 500.
- 31:55I already and I knew this, this video, this podcast is not going
- 32:00to do that well and it's just because it's nothing.
- 32:03No, anyone did wrong, right? He's just kind of a guy.
- 32:07He's not super controversial. He's not going to say something
- 32:10real spicy and I always find that interesting.
- 32:13It could be somebody who doesn't have the big name but they're
- 32:16interesting and they tell compelling stories and I always
- 32:19find that fascinating how you could have a big name person but
- 32:23that video doesn't perform, but you could have Joe Blow from
- 32:27Kokomo. But if they have a really good
- 32:29story, you see that and and people when you have a good
- 32:33story on YouTube or podcast, people like it, they subscribe
- 32:37off it, they comment and that's that whole algorithm thing.
- 32:40It's just and and now we kind of know like you know you've been
- 32:44in this game a long time. You know when you get a good
- 32:45sound bite and when I hear a sound bite, I'm like that's
- 32:49something that if you if you package it the right way is
- 32:52super interesting regardless if the person is famous or not.
- 32:55But there's some people who are really famous but they do a
- 32:58podcast for an hour and they really don't say that much.
- 33:01There's nothing wrong with that. But that's what I find
- 33:03interesting about about this game.
- 33:06And I'm telling you it's a it's addicting because I look at my
- 33:08analytics every day, probably 100 times, and when you see that
- 33:13that views climbing like a mountain, meaning every minute,
- 33:16every hour, more people are watching it, it gets to be kind
- 33:19of addicting. Well, and it's fun when.
- 33:22People say I couldn't get out of the car if it was a radio
- 33:25interview or the Kelly Chase interview.
- 33:27I put it on the podcast as well and people said, Oh my God, I
- 33:31listened to the whole thing which 29 minutes, like, wow,
- 33:34that's the greatest compliment we should have next week.
- 33:37Let's get Joe Blow from Kokomo on.
- 33:40You probably been texting with him late at night.
- 33:43Get him on the show. Great sound bites.
- 33:45Charlie, what is the key to a great sound bite?
- 33:47It's if it if they say my name in the sound bite.
- 33:51Charlie's theory. We're going to Fox 2, right.
- 33:54I would always pick out the clip where the guest, the code to the
- 33:57player would say, yeah, you know what, Martin?
- 34:00I was, I was just thinking about that.
- 34:01You know what, Martin? That's a great question.
- 34:04It wasn't true. It was not true.
- 34:06But I you believed it was true that every clip where they would
- 34:09say my name, I would include on the show, which may have been
- 34:12true. Yes.
- 34:14And the other thing that always happens, it always happened to
- 34:16me. You'd go, you'd go get your
- 34:18interviews, Cardinals Blues, whatever and you'd be like, oh
- 34:21dude, I got this great sound, but it's it's so good.
- 34:24And then you go back and it's only like 7 seconds.
- 34:28You tell but. And you tell the.
- 34:29Producer oh, use this bite at 5. This is this is the best.
- 34:32Oh, my God, this is gonna be. And then Dave drove.
- 34:34Dude, it's 5 seconds. What else do you want to use?
- 34:36And you're like, I don't know. Well, Chuck, it's great to be
- 34:41here on Martin Marlow. Midday grind.
- 34:43Whatever. Just catching up.
- 34:45Let's just let's just stay in touch, buddy.
- 34:47It's been too long. And this is the world.
- 34:49This has started taking me back to the pandemic now sitting in
- 34:52our little office here, zooming away.
- 34:55God, I can't even remember how. Think about those, those TV days
- 34:59you were still at Fox 2. We probably had as many viewers
- 35:04as we'll ever have in our life because everybody is stuck at
- 35:07home and we had the least content and the least
- 35:11advertisers ever. Nobody was spending money,
- 35:14nobody was playing a game and everybody was tuning in.
- 35:17I remember doing a piece was with Larry Hughes and we zoomed
- 35:21and just talked NBA because it was during that Michael Jordan
- 35:23craze. And.
- 35:25We and we did a 3 minute piece that night with Larry Hughes
- 35:28telling stories because he played with LeBron, he played
- 35:30with Michael. He's the perfect.
- 35:32It was better Michael or LeBron. We'll talk about it when we come
- 35:35back. We decide once and for all he's
- 35:37the perfect guy to talk about it, which by the way, he always
- 35:39leans towards Michael. We ran the piece that night and
- 35:42I got a bunch of texts from just friends of mine.
- 35:44And then Jim Edmonds is like, wow, awesome piece.
- 35:47Like even a guy with millions of dollars, it just stuck in his
- 35:51house. Can't go anywhere forced to
- 35:54watch. But I'm having flashbacks
- 35:56sitting here doing the but this is the way of the world.
- 35:59I guess everybody's kind of sitting in on what are we on
- 36:01Stream Yard? Wait, is this streaming Charlie
- 36:05into your yard or are we on? It's called Stream Yard.
- 36:09You're telling me how much? Bags.
- 36:11What's he got? 4 four Super Bowl rings.
- 36:14Hey, because you know, the pandemic did change everything
- 36:17with Zoom and Stream Yard and I had.
- 36:19I never even knew of any of this technology.
- 36:21But what I what I you know I try to steal a couple bases if you
- 36:26if you may remember is once once during the pandemic you could do
- 36:30all these zooms right. So like back in the day we'd go
- 36:32to high school hey I'm going to go to Hazelwood central and do a
- 36:34story on the football team and then for for COVID you just
- 36:38zoomed and then I'm like well if I don't have to drive to
- 36:41Hazelwood I could just zoom. So this is post Pandemic.
- 36:44It's over. You can definitely go to the
- 36:46field or you can go to the basketball gym.
- 36:48But it's like, hey, I could just zoom with the coach from my
- 36:50house and my underwear. I don't have to leave, you know,
- 36:53get in the car. Let's just say.
- 36:54Charlie was all about convenience.
- 36:57I would say, hey, tomorrow we really need to get out to a high
- 37:00school basketball team. It's been a while.
- 37:02We really need to find a local kid doing, you know, North
- 37:06Glendale's got some good dude, They're in fifth grade.
- 37:09Yeah, but it's right by my house.
- 37:11Might be able to do a little feature piece.
- 37:13They're all about convenience. Like, even right now, I'm
- 37:16looking at your setup, your background.
- 37:18No pretense. You know how everybody has the
- 37:20bookshelf with all their awards or the books?
- 37:24Everybody. And I'm looking, I'm saying this
- 37:26is struck here. He has no pretense.
- 37:28Or is it no effort? That's one of both.
- 37:33No award I have. Yeah, we have an office.
- 37:36But like, I don't want to create the whole backdrop.
- 37:38And I think when you have a guest on and it's this people
- 37:41that are watching right now, like you can't really see a lot
- 37:44of of behind you there. But no, as you said at the end
- 37:48there, so I live now in in Glendale and I would drive to
- 37:51Fox 2 up Lindbergh. And anytime there was a high
- 37:54school story, I would usually try to make sure that was one of
- 37:56those high schools like Chaminade Burroughs, one of
- 37:59those schools that falls along Lindbergh along along the drive
- 38:02up to Fox 2C. Can we get?
- 38:04Away from some of these expensive prep boys school.
- 38:08I tell you what, then I'm going to have to veer off Lindbergh.
- 38:11Maybe I go a little further north.
- 38:13I can get the written there. That's that's at the boundary
- 38:15there. But great to be here Chuck.
- 38:17Thanks for having me on the Stream yard.
- 38:20Will I be on is this going to be in the Kenny Wallace umbrella of
- 38:23segments? You don't know where to put this
- 38:26do you? That's.
- 38:27That's the thing I think, look, my podcast is not monetized yet.
- 38:32We're trying to build it up. So I think we put this, I don't
- 38:35want to put the really political stuff on the Kenny Media Podcast
- 38:40because I just think it's it's not a good fit but I think this
- 38:43is more just random. So I think we put this on the
- 38:45Kenny Wallace Media Podcast Network.
- 38:49I think we start this on the news and politics YouTube and we
- 38:53see how it how it does. I can also put it on the
- 38:55Cardinals YouTube. We'll we'll, we'll see.
- 38:58We'll kind of whichever. Works.
- 39:01You're you're turning into like a baseball freaking nerd
- 39:03analytics, studying the numbers. And we'll take a couple of
- 39:07pitches before we actually hit the hole here.
- 39:10All right, buddy, great talk. Great.
- 39:12That's what my saying with Dan McLaughlin is now he's mad
- 39:14because I just said great talk. I can't say that that's a
- 39:17copyright infringement. This was a really good talk,
- 39:20Good talk. I'll.
- 39:21Take it.
