- 0:01How do we see and interpret who and what we are?
- 0:05Most people identify with the physical body.
- 0:08The body is their essential being.
- 0:11In many cases, they build up the body, work to create an image
- 0:15that they project to others. They judge themselves and others
- 0:19based on the form and presence they develop for the body,
- 0:23whether it is a beautiful body, a fit body or a trained body.
- 0:28Bodybuilding, dieting, beauty treatments, makeup, expensive
- 0:33clothes, rare food and drinks all represent a focus on the
- 0:37body as the central aspect of the life.
- 0:41This also works in the other direction.
- 0:44When people try to achieve the idealized version that their
- 0:47society demands but are unable to meet the criteria, they may
- 0:52fall into a form of depression and actually undertake actions
- 0:56which undermine the ideal bodily development in their culture.
- 1:02Others identify with the vital force they project.
- 1:06They may seek power, wealth, sex.
- 1:10They may measure themselves according to their vital status
- 1:13and position in society. In many cases, they flaunt their
- 1:17wealth or wield their power to seem like they are at the head
- 1:22of the pecking order in the society.
- 1:24By whatever means that society tends to judge vital position.
- 1:29Those who have setbacks may identify themselves as a victim
- 1:33and wear that badge as their claim to being noticed.
- 1:38Still others identify with their mental powers.
- 1:42They focus on their high IQ, outstanding test scores, or
- 1:46specialized skills they have developed in math, science,
- 1:51technology, or other fields that require strong mental
- 1:54capacities. They rate themselves highly in
- 1:57comparison to others who have not focused on this particular
- 2:01form of development. Those who cannot succeed as well
- 2:06may tend to internalize the failure and fixate on their
- 2:10shortcomings. Whether an individual focuses on
- 2:14one or more of these aspects, the external ego personality
- 2:19takes on a persona related to this outward person.
- 2:23This external focus tends to consume the attention.
- 2:28Few are those who recognize that they are not a body with a soul,
- 2:33but rather a soul using a body. Ramana Maharshi, the sage of
- 2:39Arunachala, famously asked the seeker to raise the question
- 2:43within himself, Who am I? With the sense that eventually
- 2:48the seeker would come to realize that he is not the body, not the
- 2:53life force, not the mind and not the ego personality, but rather
- 3:00is an immortal being identified with the Divine through the
- 3:04soul, hidden deep within. The Bhagwad Gita states quote.
- 3:13The Lord, O Arjuna, is seated in the heart of all beings, turning
- 3:17all beings mounted upon a machine by his Maya.
- 3:20End Quote Reference Bhagwad Gita and its Message, translated by
- 3:25Sri Aurobindo, Chapter 18, verse 61.
- 3:31When the seeker shifts his standpoint from the external to
- 3:35the internal, he can begin to consciously hear the voice of
- 3:39the soul and accept its guidance.
- 3:42In the meantime, the soul waits patiently as the external
- 3:46instruments develop and mature, preparing themselves to
- 3:50eventually become powerful and conscious instruments for the
- 3:55soul's purpose in the creation, Sriorabhindu observes.
- 4:00Quote If the psychic entity had been from the beginning unveiled
- 4:05and known to its ministers, not a secluded king in a screen
- 4:08chamber, the human evolution would have been a rapid soul out
- 4:13flowering, not the difficult checkered and disfigured
- 4:17development it now is. But the veil is thick, and we
- 4:21know not the secret light within us, the light in the hidden
- 4:25crypt of the hearts innermost sanctuary.
- 4:29Intimations rise to our surface from the psyche, but our mind
- 4:34does not detect their source. It takes them for its own
- 4:38activities, because before even they come to the surface, they
- 4:43are clothed in mental substance. Thus ignorant of their
- 4:47authority, it follows or does not follow them according to its
- 4:50bent or turn at the moment. If the mind obeys the urge of
- 4:55the vital ego, then there is little chance of the psyche at
- 4:59all controlling the nature or manifesting in us something of
- 5:03its secret spiritual stuff and native movement.
- 5:08Or if the mind is overconfident to act in its own smaller light,
- 5:13attached to its own judgement, will and action of knowledge,
- 5:17then also the soul will remain veiled and quiescent and wait
- 5:22for the mind's farther evolution.
- 5:25For the psychic part within us is there to support the natural
- 5:31evolution. And the first natural evolution
- 5:34must be the development of body, life and mind successively, and
- 5:39these must act each in its own kind or together in their I'll
- 5:43assorted partnership in order to grow and have experience and
- 5:47evolve. The soul gathers the essence of
- 5:51all our mental, vital and bodily experience and assimilates it
- 5:55for the farther evolution of our existence in nature.
- 5:59But this action is a cult and not obtruded on the surface.
- 6:04In the early material and vital stages of the evolution of
- 6:08being. There is indeed no consciousness
- 6:11of soul. There are psychic activities,
- 6:15but the instrumentation, the form of these activities, are
- 6:19vital and physical or mental when the mind is active.
- 6:24For even the mind, so long as it is primitive or is developed but
- 6:28still too external, does not recognize their deeper
- 6:34character. It is easy to regard ourselves
- 6:37as physical beings or beings of life, or mental beings using
- 6:41life and body, and to ignore the existence of the soul
- 6:45altogether. For the only definite idea that
- 6:48we have of the soul is a something that has survived the
- 6:51death of our bodies. But what this is we do not know,
- 6:56because even if we are conscious sometimes of its presence, we
- 7:00are not normally conscious of its distinct reality, nor do we
- 7:05feel clearly its direct action in our nature.
