- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up, everyone, and welcome to another episode of the
- 0:03Speaker 1: Epstein Chronicles. In this episode, we're going to keep the
- 0:06Speaker 1: congressional transcript party going, and we're going to start taking
- 0:09Speaker 1: a look at the transcript from the interview with Ted Waite.
- 0:13Speaker 1: And like usual, we're going to skip the whole swearing
- 0:16Speaker 1: in part and get right to Mr. Waite and his
- 0:18Speaker 1: opening statement. Mr. Waite, good morning, members of the committee
- 0:22Speaker 1: and staff. My name is Ted Waite. I was born
- 0:25Speaker 1: and raised in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of a
- 0:28Speaker 1: fourth generation cattleman. While I did not follow my family
- 0:31Speaker 1: into the cattle business, my own career began on my
- 0:34Speaker 1: family's ranch. In 1985, I co-founded the personal computer company
- 0:38Speaker 1: Gateway in the empty upper floor of a farmhouse on
- 0:42Speaker 1: my father's ranch. Twenty years later, I retired from Gateway,
- 0:46Speaker 1: and since then, I've been fortunate to focus my energy
- 0:49Speaker 1: and resources on philanthropy and the causes nearest to my heart.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Chief among those are violence and prevention and ocean conservation.
- 0:59Speaker 1: In 2005, my sister and I founded the Wade Institute
- 1:02Speaker 1: for Violence Prevention, building on the work the foundation had
- 1:06Speaker 1: been doing since 1993. The Institute is focused on combating
- 1:10Speaker 1: violence against women, preventing bullying, and breaking the cycle of
- 1:14Speaker 1: violence that exists in our homes, schools, and communities. At
- 1:18Speaker 1: its core, our work is about disrupting the social norms
- 1:21Speaker 1: that accept violence as part of life. That's why I
- 1:24Speaker 1: believe your current inquiry into Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell
- 1:28Speaker 1: is so important. For too long, Jeffrey Epstein's crimes were
- 1:32Speaker 1: unpunished and were swept under the rug as part of
- 1:35Speaker 1: a culture that accepted the most unacceptable behavior from rich
- 1:38Speaker 1: and powerful people. I want to acknowledge the victims who
- 1:42Speaker 1: were silenced and ignored and denied justice for too long.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I'm hopeful that this inquiry will lead not only to
- 1:48Speaker 1: greater accountability and justice for victims, but also to a
- 1:52Speaker 1: broader public understanding of the conditions that expose young women
- 1:56Speaker 1: to violence and exploitation across the country, and around the world.
- 2:01Speaker 1: It is in that spirit that I'm here today voluntarily
- 2:04Speaker 1: to answer your questions. Before I do so, I would
- 2:07Speaker 1: like to outline some key facts about my relationship with Ms.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Maxwell and my limited interactions with Mr. Epstein. I first
- 2:15Speaker 1: met both Ms. Maxwell and Mr. Epstein in November of
- 2:18Speaker 1: 2003 at a dinner in Hong Kong. I was traveling
- 2:22Speaker 1: Asia and received a last-minute invitation to join a large
- 2:25Speaker 1: group of people at a restaurant. I exchanged contact information
- 2:29Speaker 1: with Ms. Maxwell and we began communicating more regularly over
- 2:33Speaker 1: the next several months. I do not remember having any
- 2:36Speaker 1: conversations with Mr. Epstein at the dinner beyond a brief introduction.
- 2:41Speaker 1: In 2004, my friendship with Ms. Maxwell developed into a
- 2:45Speaker 1: romantic relationship that ultimately lasted until September of 2010. This
- 2:51Speaker 1: was a period of immense personal transition in my life.
- 2:55Speaker 1: To put this period, mid-2004, into perspective, I was preparing
- 2:59Speaker 1: to finally retire from Gateway after returning to the CEO
- 3:02Speaker 1: role to save the company that I founded. I was
- 3:05Speaker 1: separating from my wife and the mother of my children,
- 3:08Speaker 1: and I was still grieving the unexpected loss of my
- 3:11Speaker 1: father in August of 2003. I can say unequivocally that
- 3:16Speaker 1: if I knew then what I know now about Ms. Maxwell,
- 3:19Speaker 1: I never would have befriended her or allowed her to
- 3:21Speaker 1: be around my four children, three of whom are girls
- 3:24Speaker 1: and two at that point, ranged in ages from 8
- 3:27Speaker 1: to 14. I never would have spent six years in
- 3:31Speaker 1: a romantic relationship with her, but when I look back
- 3:34Speaker 1: at that period today in response to your questions, I
- 3:37Speaker 1: can only speak to what I knew and what I
- 3:39Speaker 1: saw at the time. Throughout our relationship, I lived in
- 3:43Speaker 1: San Diego, Ms. Maxwell lived in New York. As such,
- 3:46Speaker 1: we split our time between our respective homes and traveled together,
- 3:50Speaker 1: but also spent frequent stretches of time apart. I understand
- 3:54Speaker 1: that she was employed by Mr. Epstein as a property
- 3:57Speaker 1: manager of sorts, but I simply do not have visibility
- 4:00Speaker 1: into the details. And I avoided Mr. Epstein both because
- 4:04Speaker 1: I found him off-putting, but mostly because he was my
- 4:07Speaker 1: girlfriend's ex-boyfriend, not somebody that I was eager to spend
- 4:10Speaker 1: time with. Over the course of my six-year relationship with Ms. Maxwell,
- 4:15Speaker 1: I would estimate that I interacted with Mr. Epstein less
- 4:18Speaker 1: than five times, and each of those were very brief
- 4:21Speaker 1: and unintentional. I have never been inside any of his homes,
- 4:26Speaker 1: flown on his airplane, or been to his island, period.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Last time I spoke to Ms. Maxwell, substantively, was in
- 4:33Speaker 1: September of 2010, when I ended our relationship. And the
- 4:36Speaker 1: last time I saw her was a bit later, when
- 4:38Speaker 1: we unexpectedly ran into each other at an ocean conference.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I share all of this with you today because I
- 4:45Speaker 1: understand this committee's work demands candor, and I want to
- 4:48Speaker 1: do my part. I will answer your questions to the
- 4:51Speaker 1: best of my recollection, and I hope that my testimony...
- 4:53Speaker 1: is helpful. Ms. Cathay, question, thank you again for appearing voluntarily.
- 4:59Speaker 1: We appreciate you being here today and your testimony and
- 5:02Speaker 1: you're willing to be truthful with us today and I
- 5:04Speaker 1: just want to start briefly with some prelim background. You
- 5:08Speaker 1: did just jump into your background a little bit but
- 5:10Speaker 1: starting off simply, where did you go to undergraduate school? Answer,
- 5:14Speaker 1: I went to undergraduate school briefly at the University of
- 5:17Speaker 1: Colorado then the University of Iowa. Question, and what degrees
- 5:21Speaker 1: did you receive there? Answer, I did not receive a degree. Question,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and then you already jumped into your professional career, but
- 5:29Speaker 1: is there anything that you would like to add? Briefly
- 5:31Speaker 1: walk us through the starting of your company and your foundation. Answer,
- 5:36Speaker 1: I left University of Iowa in November of 84. I
- 5:39Speaker 1: went to work in a computer store in Des Moines,
- 5:41Speaker 1: Iowa for roughly nine months, and then in September of 85,
- 5:44Speaker 1: I moved back to Sioux City to start Gateway with
- 5:47Speaker 1: my friend Mike Hammond. Question, you mentioned that you first
- 5:51Speaker 1: met Ms. Maxwell at a dinner in Hong Kong. With
- 5:54Speaker 1: the Clinton's president, is that correct? Answer, yes. Question, and
- 5:58Speaker 1: that was in 2003, correct? Answer, yes. Question, can you
- 6:02Speaker 1: describe a little bit more about what those circumstances were? Answer,
- 6:06Speaker 1: did you say, excuse me, did you say the Clinton's president? Question,
- 6:10Speaker 1: were the Clinton's president at this dinner? Answer, at dinner,
- 6:13Speaker 1: only Bill Clinton. Question, only President Clinton. Thank you. And
- 6:16Speaker 1: this was in 2003? Answer, yeah, November of 2003. Question,
- 6:21Speaker 1: are there any details that we left out of your
- 6:23Speaker 1: initial statement that you would like to add surrounding the
- 6:26Speaker 1: circumstances of that event? Who invited you to that event,
- 6:30Speaker 1: for example? Answer, I was invited to the event by
- 6:33Speaker 1: Doug Band. Question, and were you and Doug Band close? Answer,
- 6:37Speaker 1: I knew Doug. Question, did President Clinton know you were attending? Answer,
- 6:41Speaker 1: I wouldn't have been privy to that information. I assume
- 6:44Speaker 1: Doug would have told him, but I don't know for sure. Question,
- 6:48Speaker 1: and you never met Ms. Maxwell prior to this dinner? Answer, no,
- 6:51Speaker 1: I had not. Mr. Spector, what was the purpose of
- 6:55Speaker 1: the event? Mr. Waite, President Clinton was traveling with a
- 6:58Speaker 1: large delegation around Asia, and it was just a dinner. Mr. Spector,
- 7:03Speaker 1: was it a fundraiser? Mr. Waite, it was not a fundraiser.
- 7:05Speaker 1: It was a typical Clinton dinner. A lot of people there. Ms. Cathay, question,
- 7:10Speaker 1: did you interact with President Clinton during the dinner? Answer, yeah,
- 7:14Speaker 1: I was seated next to him. Question, what kinds of
- 7:16Speaker 1: conversations were y'all having? Answer, I don't recall any specific conversation.
- 7:21Speaker 1: It was, you know, just a social dinner. Question, who
- 7:24Speaker 1: introduced you to Ms. Maxwell at the dinner? Answer, I
- 7:27Speaker 1: don't recall exactly. Question, do you recall the first conversation
- 7:31Speaker 1: you had with her? Answer, yeah, it was later on,
- 7:34Speaker 1: shortly before I left dinner, I believe. Question, Mr. Spector,
- 7:38Speaker 1: do you recall who else was at the table with
- 7:40Speaker 1: you and President Clinton? Answer, there was a number of people.
- 7:44Speaker 1: There was a very, very large group. There were quite
- 7:46Speaker 1: a few people. It was a very typical Clinton affair. Question,
- 7:50Speaker 1: but neither Maxwell or Epstein were at the table. Answer, no,
- 7:53Speaker 1: they were both at the table. Question, oh, they were. Answer, yeah. Question, okay. Answer,
- 7:59Speaker 1: like I mentioned in my opening statement, sorry. Callan jumps in,
- 8:02Speaker 1: one of the other people asking questions. Yeah, Spector, understood.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Back to Ms. Cathay asking questions. And to clarify, that
- 8:11Speaker 1: was the first time that you had met Epstein at
- 8:13Speaker 1: the dinner? Answer, yes. Question, do you recall the first
- 8:17Speaker 1: conversation you had with Mr. Epstein? Answer, I don't really
- 8:21Speaker 1: recall having a direct conversation with him. Question, do you
- 8:24Speaker 1: recall who introduced you to Mr. Epstein? Answer, I don't recall.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I think I was introduced when I walked in. I
- 8:30Speaker 1: walked in late. The dinner was already kind of in progress.
- 8:33Speaker 1: So I don't recall exactly who introduced me. I think
- 8:36Speaker 1: I was introduced to them so... Miss Callan, and just
- 8:39Speaker 1: to clarify, Mr. Waite, did you travel with the group?
- 8:42Speaker 1: He sort of met the group there? Mr. Waite, yeah.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Miss Cathay, understood, thank you. Question, following the dinner, did
- 8:50Speaker 1: you get any kind of contact information from Miss Maxwell?
- 8:53Speaker 1: Or did that happen later on? Answer, yeah. I got
- 8:56Speaker 1: her confirmation and information at that dinner. Question, and who
- 9:00Speaker 1: asked you, who asked who on the first date? How
- 9:03Speaker 1: was the relationship initiated? Answer, I don't recall specifically. At
- 9:08Speaker 1: some point, we had dinner in New York. Question, do
- 9:10Speaker 1: you remember when that was? Answer, I believe that was December. Question,
- 9:15Speaker 1: do you know the year? Answer, that was December of 2003. Question, 2003.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Broadly speaking, taking a step back, how would you characterize
- 9:23Speaker 1: your relationship with Ms. Maxwell? Answer, she was my girlfriend
- 9:28Speaker 1: starting in 2004. Question, in 2004. Answer, yeah. Question, you
- 9:33Speaker 1: don't feel like your relationship began in 2003 then? Answer.
- 9:37Speaker 1: I met her in 2003, but it became more serious
- 9:39Speaker 1: in 2004. Question. Did the nature of your relationship change
- 9:43Speaker 1: over the years? Answer. Not really. There were a few
- 9:46Speaker 1: breaks a couple of times, but it was, I wouldn't say.
- 9:49Speaker 1: It didn't change significantly. Mr. Spector. Question. What were the
- 9:54Speaker 1: reasons for the breaks? Answer. For the breakups? Question. Yeah. Answer.
- 9:58Speaker 1: It was time. I know I was never gonna marry
- 10:00Speaker 1: her and it was just one of those things I
- 10:03Speaker 1: was getting pressure from her friends or it was just
- 10:06Speaker 1: time it had run its course question that sounds like
- 10:09Speaker 1: you're talking about in 2010 when you ended it answer
- 10:13Speaker 1: yeah question but if you had breaks between during the
- 10:16Speaker 1: years that you dated what were the reasons for those Answer,
- 10:20Speaker 1: the primary reason was I was going through a divorce.
- 10:23Speaker 1: It was a very emotional time. I was quitting my job.
- 10:26Speaker 1: I had four kids. That were my number one priority.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I had custody of them every other week. And that
- 10:31Speaker 1: was my biggest priority, was to spend time with my kids. Question,
- 10:35Speaker 1: so nothing to do with suspicion surrounding Maxwell's activities? Answer, no. Question, Ms. Cathay.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Was Ms. Maxwell single when you met her? Answer, yeah. Question,
- 10:47Speaker 1: and was she single when you went on that first
- 10:49Speaker 1: date in 2003? Answer, I believe so. Question, did you
- 10:53Speaker 1: or Ms. Maxwell ever present yourself as a couple to
- 10:55Speaker 1: those around you prior to 2003? Answer, no. Question I'd
- 11:01Speaker 1: like to introduce now, and it'll be passed out in
- 11:02Speaker 1: a minute, what will be marked as majority exhibit number one,
- 11:06Speaker 1: the transcript from the direct examination of a woman who
- 11:09Speaker 1: we will refer to as Jane Doe. And that was,
- 11:12Speaker 1: she previously worked as a legal assistant for Epstein and Company,
- 11:16Speaker 1: and then later she was an executive assistant to Ms.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Maxwell for six years. The transcript is marked at the
- 11:22Speaker 1: bottom corner of the page, EFT, number ending 6615, and
- 11:26Speaker 1: we'll be looking at page 85 of that transcript. which
- 11:30Speaker 1: will be marked at the top of the page, the
- 11:32Speaker 1: blue numbers at the top will be the page numbers.
- 11:35Speaker 1: It should actually be the second page in this packet
- 11:37Speaker 1: behind that cover page. There will be 85 at the
- 11:40Speaker 1: top of it, it should say. Answer O, 85. Question,
- 11:45Speaker 1: and we'll be looking at lines 7 through 13. And
- 11:48Speaker 1: y'all can take a moment to look at that, and
- 11:49Speaker 1: we'll pause the clock. And you can let us know
- 11:52Speaker 1: when you're ready to move forward. Mr. Sklodany, one of
- 11:56Speaker 1: the lawyers for Mr. Waite, I'm sorry, you said page 85? Cathay,
- 12:00Speaker 1: it should be at the top, labeled in blue ink,
- 12:03Speaker 1: page 85. Mr. Waite, I'm not seeing that. Ms. Cathay,
- 12:07Speaker 1: page 85 of 200. Ms. Callan jumps in, what line? Sklodny, oh,
- 12:13Speaker 1: you found it. Waite, oh, my name's here, so this
- 12:15Speaker 1: is page 85. It's just not labeled in blue. Ms. Cathay,
- 12:19Speaker 1: I apologize. I think this was printed with more pages
- 12:23Speaker 1: than is necessary. So it's page 85. And we're looking
- 12:27Speaker 1: at lines 7 through 13. And you can just take
- 12:30Speaker 1: a look at it and let us know when you're
- 12:32Speaker 1: ready to move on. Mr. Wade, I'm ready. Question. So Ms.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Doe claims in that testimony that you and Ms. Maxwell
- 12:38Speaker 1: began seeing each other as a couple in 2001 or 2002,
- 12:42Speaker 1: which is right before she stopped working for Ms. Maxwell.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Do you have any reason to know why Ms. Doe
- 12:48Speaker 1: is accurate in this timeline? She seems to claim that
- 12:51Speaker 1: you knew each other and were dating in 2001 or 2002. Answer.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I do not. Question, so you have no reason to
- 12:58Speaker 1: suspect that anyone would have thought the two of you
- 13:01Speaker 1: were a couple before this? Answer, could you clarify? I
- 13:04Speaker 1: did not meet Ms. Maxwell until November of 2003. Question understood. Ms.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Maxwell also testified in her DOJ testimony that you met
- 13:13Speaker 1: in 2003, but she said that she couldn't quite remember.
- 13:17Speaker 1: So is there any reason that you could surmise of
- 13:19Speaker 1: why her assistant would think that the two of you
- 13:22Speaker 1: had known each other or were seeing each other or
- 13:24Speaker 1: were associated prior to 2003? Answer, I do not know. Question,
- 13:30Speaker 1: how long were you in a romantic relationship with Ms. Maxwell,
- 13:33Speaker 1: for the clarity of the record? Answer, from early 2004
- 13:38Speaker 1: through September 2010. Alright folks, we're going to wrap up
- 13:40Speaker 1: right here, and in the next episode dealing with the
- 13:42Speaker 1: topic we're going to pick up where we left off.
- 13:45Speaker 1: All the information that goes with this episode can be
- 13:48Speaker 1: found in the description box. What's up everyone, and welcome
- 13:52Speaker 1: to another episode of the Epstein Chronicles. In this episode,
- 13:56Speaker 1: we're getting right back to the Ted Way transcript from
- 13:59Speaker 1: his interview with Congress. Question, you mentioned this a little
- 14:04Speaker 1: bit in your opening statement, but how frequently did you
- 14:06Speaker 1: see each other through the course of the relationship? Answer,
- 14:10Speaker 1: it was primarily every other week. It wasn't consistent every
- 14:13Speaker 1: other week, but mostly. Question, and you said that you
- 14:16Speaker 1: live far apart from each other. Answer, yes. Question, did
- 14:20Speaker 1: you ever share a residence with Ms. Maxwell? Answer, no,
- 14:24Speaker 1: I did spend a lot of time at a residence
- 14:26Speaker 1: in New York and she spent time later in our
- 14:29Speaker 1: relationship after she got to know my children at my
- 14:32Speaker 1: residence in La Jolla. Question, what was the address of
- 14:36Speaker 1: her residence in New York that you said you spent
- 14:38Speaker 1: time at? Answer, 116 East 65th Street. Ms. Callan, are
- 14:43Speaker 1: we finished with this? Ms. Cathay, yes, you can put
- 14:46Speaker 1: that aside. Question, did Ms. Maxwell own this residence? Answer,
- 14:50Speaker 1: I don't know. Question, did anyone? Gets cut off by weight.
- 14:54Speaker 1: She told me she did. Question, did anyone else ever
- 14:57Speaker 1: stay at the residence? Answer, she had some staff that
- 15:00Speaker 1: lived with her. Question, do you recall who the staff were? Answer, yes. Question, Mr. Callen,
- 15:06Speaker 1: Miss Callen, can we go off record for a moment?
- 15:09Speaker 1: They go off record, now they're back. Question, did anyone
- 15:11Speaker 1: else ever stay at the residence that Miss Maxwell owned
- 15:14Speaker 1: in New York? Answer, she had a staff couple who
- 15:18Speaker 1: lived in the basement with their son. Question, and you
- 15:21Speaker 1: mentioned what other parts of the time they were staying
- 15:23Speaker 1: in your residence. Where was that located? Answer, and she
- 15:27Speaker 1: was staying there? Question, yes, correct. Answer, yes, that would have.
- 15:32Speaker 1: That wasn't until later in our relationship, and that would
- 15:34Speaker 1: have been in La Jolla, California. Question, can you estimate
- 15:38Speaker 1: the years that she started to stay at your residence
- 15:40Speaker 1: with you? Answer, probably not till I'm guessing 2007, maybe 06, 07. Question,
- 15:46Speaker 1: did Ms. Maxwell have a relationship with anyone else in
- 15:49Speaker 1: your family? Callan, can we go off the record? Off
- 15:52Speaker 1: the record again. Now they're back on. Callan, wait, hang on,
- 15:56Speaker 1: hang on, two seconds. We'll go off the record. Okay,
- 16:00Speaker 1: they go off the record. Now they're back. Cathay, did
- 16:03Speaker 1: Miss Maxwell have a relationship with anyone else in your family? Mr. Waite, yeah,
- 16:08Speaker 1: she had a close relationship with my children, and she
- 16:11Speaker 1: met virtually everyone in my immediate family. Miss Cathay, Did Ms.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Maxwell stay in contact with your children after the relationship ended? Mr. Waite,
- 16:20Speaker 1: not that I know of. I do believe my daughter
- 16:23Speaker 1: Emily saw her in an airport once. Mr. Spector, did
- 16:26Speaker 1: anyone else in your family stay in touch with Ms.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Maxwell after the relationship ended? Mr. Waite, no. Ms. Callan,
- 16:34Speaker 1: I think he answered that. Mr. Waite, not that I
- 16:36Speaker 1: know of. Question, we're going to switch gears a little
- 16:40Speaker 1: bit and we're going to turn to Mr. Epstein. You
- 16:42Speaker 1: talked about how you met Mr. Epstein at the dinner.
- 16:45Speaker 1: What was your first impression of him? Answer. I found Mr.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Epstein somewhat arrogant. I don't really recall. Like I said
- 16:52Speaker 1: in my opening statement, he was off-putting somewhat. I didn't
- 16:55Speaker 1: really pay significant attention to it that much. Question. Did
- 17:01Speaker 1: you know anything about him prior to meeting him? Answer. No. Mr. Grant,
- 17:05Speaker 1: and you said you thought he was off-putting. What made
- 17:08Speaker 1: you think that he was off-putting? Answer. It was just, well,
- 17:12Speaker 1: he was introduced to me as, they were flying on
- 17:14Speaker 1: his plane, the delegation, the group, on a tour through Asia.
- 17:18Speaker 1: I think the way he carried himself, and a few comments.
- 17:20Speaker 1: It was a group. I don't remember having a one-on-one
- 17:23Speaker 1: conversation with him. It was just kind of a large
- 17:25Speaker 1: group there. You know, the table. It's probably this size. Mr. Grant,
- 17:30Speaker 1: and you would say it was roughly the same feeling,
- 17:33Speaker 1: as to why you thought he was arrogant as well?
- 17:35Speaker 1: Miss Callan, do you want to clarify the question a bit? Mr. Grant, yeah.
- 17:39Speaker 1: So you said he was off-putting and arrogant. You just
- 17:42Speaker 1: described what made him seem off-putting. Would that same description
- 17:46Speaker 1: fit on why you thought he was arrogant as well? Mr. Waite, yeah,
- 17:50Speaker 1: just kind of the way he carried himself, maybe. Question,
- 17:53Speaker 1: did Mr. Epstein have a reputation? amongst other people that
- 17:56Speaker 1: were there at the table that you heard about? Answer, no. Question,
- 18:00Speaker 1: was Mr. Epstein aware of your romantic relationship with Ms.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Maxwell while you were dating her? Answer, yes. Question, when
- 18:08Speaker 1: did Mr. Epstein become aware of your relationship? Answer, I
- 18:11Speaker 1: don't know. Question, do you know how he became aware
- 18:14Speaker 1: of it? Answer, I don't know for sure. Mr. Spector,
- 18:18Speaker 1: how do you know he was aware of the relationship then? Mr. Waite,
- 18:21Speaker 1: I did meet him at one point in Ms. Maxwell's
- 18:23Speaker 1: residence early in our relationship. Ms. Cathay, can you describe?
- 18:29Speaker 1: More about the circumstances of that meeting and how that
- 18:31Speaker 1: conversation went. Answer, Mr. Waite. Ms. Maxwell was hosting a
- 18:35Speaker 1: dinner event. We were getting ready, and then she announced
- 18:38Speaker 1: that Jeffrey wanted to meet me, and he'd be there shortly.
- 18:41Speaker 1: And he kind of appeared. It was quite odd, I felt,
- 18:44Speaker 1: and uncomfortable since he was her ex-boyfriend. Ms. Cathay. Did
- 18:48Speaker 1: she give you any information about him in preparation for
- 18:50Speaker 1: meeting him? Mr. Waite, no, not really. Mr. Spector, so
- 18:55Speaker 1: you knew that he was her ex-boyfriend. So was that
- 18:57Speaker 1: from conversation that you had with Ms. Maxwell or someone else? Answer, yes. Question,
- 19:04Speaker 1: with Ms. Maxwell? Answer, yes. Question, what did she tell
- 19:07Speaker 1: you about him? Answer, she told me that he was
- 19:09Speaker 1: like a brilliant investor money manager. Question, so she only
- 19:13Speaker 1: told you positive things about her ex-boyfriend? Answer, yes. and
- 19:17Speaker 1: that they ended their relationship, I think it was, on
- 19:20Speaker 1: her 40th birthday. Question by Ms. Cathay. You mentioned this
- 19:25Speaker 1: briefly earlier, but how often did you see or interact
- 19:28Speaker 1: with Mr. Epstein through the course of your relationship with Ms. Maxwell? Answer,
- 19:33Speaker 1: there was only two other times after that meeting at
- 19:36Speaker 1: the 65th Street residence, and those were both literally running
- 19:39Speaker 1: into him, like on the street. Question, these were brief
- 19:43Speaker 1: conversations then? Answer, very brief. Question, do you happen to
- 19:47Speaker 1: know what you were talking about with him? Answer, no,
- 19:50Speaker 1: I do not recall. Question, was he particularly interested in
- 19:54Speaker 1: your business or anything else? Answer, the meeting at 65th Street,
- 19:59Speaker 1: he asked a lot about what I was investing in,
- 20:01Speaker 1: you know, that type of thing. Question, did you get
- 20:03Speaker 1: the impression that he was after information about your company specifically? Answer,
- 20:08Speaker 1: it was quite odd. I couldn't really figure it out, frankly. Question,
- 20:12Speaker 1: so no, you were just unclear on why he was
- 20:14Speaker 1: asking or what he was asking about? Answer, yeah, I
- 20:18Speaker 1: got more of the sense he was filling me out. Question,
- 20:21Speaker 1: in retrospect, do you have any idea what he might
- 20:23Speaker 1: have been about? Answer, no. Question, did Ms. Maxwell ever
- 20:27Speaker 1: express concerns that Mr. Epstein would have had a negative
- 20:30Speaker 1: reaction to the two of you dating? Mr. Waite, no. Question,
- 20:34Speaker 1: did the nature of your relationship with Mr. Epstein change
- 20:38Speaker 1: at any point? while you were dating Ms. Maxwell? Answer, no,
- 20:42Speaker 1: I never really had a relationship with Mr. Epstein. Mr. Spector,
- 20:46Speaker 1: did you ever communicate with Mr. Epstein over the phone
- 20:49Speaker 1: or email or anything? Mr. Waite, no. Spector, besides the
- 20:54Speaker 1: in-person interactions that you described? Ted Waite, no, not that
- 20:58Speaker 1: I know of. Ms. Cate, could you please go into
- 21:01Speaker 1: a little bit more detail about Ms. Maxwell's occupation? Answer, sure,
- 21:06Speaker 1: I'll try to speak up for those in the back.
- 21:08Speaker 1: I can only go based on what she told me.
- 21:10Speaker 1: She told me that she was, after the romantic relationship
- 21:13Speaker 1: with Mr. Epstein ended, you know, prior to that, she
- 21:16Speaker 1: had managed his properties and his staff and, you know,
- 21:19Speaker 1: acted like kind of a wife would. She then transitioned
- 21:23Speaker 1: to an employee status as an estate manager. After we
- 21:26Speaker 1: began dating, she minimized those activities and was moving out
- 21:30Speaker 1: of that, out of that role. And she was always
- 21:33Speaker 1: busy investing in other things, small businesses. She was very entrepreneurial.
- 21:37Speaker 1: And you know she claimed she paid for her residence
- 21:40Speaker 1: with some internet investment. Question. Couple things to follow up
- 21:44Speaker 1: on there. But first, so she was still employed by Mr.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Epstein while you were dating? Can you clarify the time
- 21:50Speaker 1: frame of that? When did she stop working for Epstein
- 21:53Speaker 1: or excuse me, let me rephrase. Did she ever stop
- 21:56Speaker 1: working for Mr. Epstein while you were together? Answer. I
- 21:59Speaker 1: don't know that for sure. Question. But you said she
- 22:02Speaker 1: cut back her time working for him. Answer. That's what
- 22:04Speaker 1: she told me. Question, well, you didn't know that for sure? Answer,
- 22:08Speaker 1: I didn't know that for sure. Question, because you did
- 22:10Speaker 1: live in different cities and? No verbal response. Question, do
- 22:15Speaker 1: you know how often she was going into the office? Answer,
- 22:18Speaker 1: I don't know. Question, do you know how often she
- 22:20Speaker 1: was communicating with Mr. Epstein on a daily basis? Answer,
- 22:24Speaker 1: I don't know. Question, did you ever visit Ms. Maxwell
- 22:27Speaker 1: at the office where she worked for Mr. Epstein? Answer, no,
- 22:30Speaker 1: not that I recall. Question, did she ever talk to
- 22:33Speaker 1: you about Mr. Epstein in the context of being her employer? Answer,
- 22:37Speaker 1: not in that context. Question, she never complained about work? Answer, no,
- 22:41Speaker 1: not that I recall. Question, did she ever complain about
- 22:44Speaker 1: any aspect of her job, even things that maybe were
- 22:47Speaker 1: unrelated to Mr. Epstein? Answer, she didn't get into a
- 22:51Speaker 1: lot of details about it. Now Mr. Spector is asking
- 22:54Speaker 1: a question. You didn't have questions for her given that
- 22:57Speaker 1: she was working, you were dating someone that was working
- 23:00Speaker 1: for her ex-boyfriend? You didn't have any questions about that? Mr. Waite,
- 23:04Speaker 1: I was under the impression that she moved on from that.
- 23:07Speaker 1: She talked a lot about investment ideas, and she had
- 23:10Speaker 1: other activities, but very little about. I don't recall any
- 23:13Speaker 1: conversations about the day-to-day activity with Mr. Epstein's affairs. Ms. Cathay,
- 23:18Speaker 1: doing the questioning now, you were her boyfriend for seven years.
- 23:21Speaker 1: So in your opinion, the things that you observed, did Mr.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Epstein ever manipulate Ms. Maxwell into continuing working for him?
- 23:30Speaker 1: Miss Callan, if you have an opinion. Mr. Waite, yeah,
- 23:33Speaker 1: you're asking me to give an opinion. Miss Cathay, I am.
- 23:36Speaker 1: As a long-term boyfriend, and what you observed about her. Mr. Waite,
- 23:41Speaker 1: I could sum it up to say, he seemed like
- 23:43Speaker 1: there was a presence, and it was always there. Miss Cathay,
- 23:46Speaker 1: do you feel like there was a consequence of the
- 23:48Speaker 1: fact that they used to date? Mr. Waite, I don't know. Mr. Spector,
- 23:54Speaker 1: it did seem like Mr. Epstein knew something about Miss
- 23:56Speaker 1: Maxwell that she was afraid about. Mr. Waite, I never
- 23:59Speaker 1: got that impression. Ms. Cathay, question, did Mr. Epstein abuse Ms. Maxwell?
- 24:05Speaker 1: Answer again, I don't know. I never, never would have
- 24:07Speaker 1: witnessed anything directly. Question, did Mr. Epstein ever ask her,
- 24:11Speaker 1: coerce her, or force her to have sex with other people?
- 24:15Speaker 1: Answer again, I don't know. Question, she never brought up
- 24:18Speaker 1: anything about that, anything about their previous relationship that ever
- 24:22Speaker 1: made you feel uncomfortable or unsafe? Ms. Callan, do you
- 24:27Speaker 1: want to chat? They go off the record. They come
- 24:30Speaker 1: back on. Miss Cathay will go back on the record. Question,
- 24:33Speaker 1: did Miss Maxwell, in the course of dating her and
- 24:36Speaker 1: getting close to her, did she ever mention that anything
- 24:38Speaker 1: happened in her relationship with Mr. Epstein that made her
- 24:41Speaker 1: feel uncomfortable or unsafe? Answer, not that I can recall. Question,
- 24:46Speaker 1: did she talk about anything ever occurring that she regrets? Answer, again, nothing.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Nothing comes to mind. Question, was your relationship with Miss
- 24:55Speaker 1: Maxwell monogamous? Answer, I was under the impression it was. Question,
- 25:00Speaker 1: and what is Ms. Maxwell's sexual orientation? Answer, she's. Gets
- 25:04Speaker 1: cut off by his lawyer. Want to go off the record?
- 25:07Speaker 1: They go off the record. They come back on. Question,
- 25:10Speaker 1: what was Ms. Maxwell's sexual orientation? Mr. Waite, heterosexual. Mr. Spector,
- 25:15Speaker 1: do you have any reason to believe that she had
- 25:18Speaker 1: any sexual encounters with females? Ted Waite, no. Ms. Cathay, question,
- 25:24Speaker 1: during your relationship with Ms. Maxwell, did you have any
- 25:27Speaker 1: reason to believe that her romantic relationship with Mr. Epstein
- 25:30Speaker 1: was continuing while you were dating her? Answer, no. All right, folks,
- 25:34Speaker 1: we're going to wrap up right here. And in the
- 25:36Speaker 1: next episode, dealing with the topic we're going to pick
- 25:38Speaker 1: up where we left off. All the information that goes
- 25:41Speaker 1: with this episode can be found in the description box.
- 25:45Speaker 1: What's up, everyone? And welcome to another episode of the
- 25:48Speaker 1: Epstein Chronicles. In this episode, we're diving right back in
- 25:51Speaker 1: to Ted Waite and his conversation with Congress. Question. I'd
- 25:58Speaker 1: like to enter as Majority Exhibit 2 an email dated
- 26:01Speaker 1: with the subject line, Hey, it'll be passed out right now.
- 26:04Speaker 1: This is from Glenn Maxwell to Ted Wade. The email
- 26:07Speaker 1: is marked EFTA number ending in 5814. Question by Ms. Cathay.
- 26:14Speaker 1: And we'll wait until they get passed out and you
- 26:16Speaker 1: can take a second to review and then let us
- 26:18Speaker 1: know when you're ready to resume. Do you recall receiving
- 26:21Speaker 1: this email from Ms. Maxwell in 2004? Answer. I do not. Question.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Have you ever seen this email before? Answer, only in
- 26:30Speaker 1: preparation for the testimony. Question, and we understand J.E. in
- 26:34Speaker 1: the email is meant Jeffrey Epstein. Did you also understand J.E.
- 26:38Speaker 1: to be Jeffrey Epstein? Answer, I would assume so. Question,
- 26:42Speaker 1: would you please explain in general what Ms. Maxwell is
- 26:44Speaker 1: saying in this email with the subject line, hey, at
- 26:47Speaker 1: the top of the page? Answer, I assume she's talking
- 26:50Speaker 1: about how she's going to define her relationship with Mr.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Epstein with me in her life. question, and to clarify
- 26:57Speaker 1: for the sake of the record, when Ms. Maxwell is
- 26:59Speaker 1: referring to, quote, our relationship in the email, is she
- 27:03Speaker 1: referring to her relationship with you? Answer, I don't know.
- 27:06Speaker 1: I assume reading that, it was talking about her relationship
- 27:09Speaker 1: with Mr. Epstein, her work relationship with Mr. Epstein. But
- 27:13Speaker 1: maybe it's our relationship. I can't. It's not clear. Ms. Callan, yeah,
- 27:18Speaker 1: it's not clear. Ms. Cathay, understood. Mr. Skwodanney, That's a
- 27:24Speaker 1: message she wrote, Mr. Waite. It's a message she wrote
- 27:27Speaker 1: that you're asking about. Yeah, so I don't know whether
- 27:30Speaker 1: the hour, I don't know whether the hour means Epstein
- 27:33Speaker 1: or me. Question. Thank you. To the best of your knowledge,
- 27:37Speaker 1: what was your reaction to this email when you received it?
- 27:41Speaker 1: This was sent to you by Ghislaine? Answer again. I
- 27:44Speaker 1: don't recall. Question. Did you know generally that Ms. Maxwell
- 27:49Speaker 1: was discussing her relationship with you? With Mr. Epstein? Answer yes. Question.
- 27:54Speaker 1: In the email, Ms. Maxwell says essentially that Mr. Epstein
- 27:57Speaker 1: is reviewing the logistics of your relationship and their relationship.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Is that an accurate characterization? Ms. Callan, I don't know
- 28:05Speaker 1: that that's clear. Mr. Waite, yeah. Ms. Cathay, understood. In
- 28:10Speaker 1: the email, though, she is saying that he is reviewing
- 28:12Speaker 1: the aspects of our relationship. Where does it say that?
- 28:17Speaker 1: Asked Mr. Skladani. Ms. Cathay, it's in the second line,
- 28:21Speaker 1: before it ends. Before without impeding my plans. He's reviewed
- 28:26Speaker 1: all the ways for us to remain close without impeding
- 28:28Speaker 1: any plans or fun that we may have. Ms. Skladani,
- 28:32Speaker 1: it sounds like she's reviewing the ways for her and
- 28:35Speaker 1: Epstein to remain close. That's how I'm reading it. Ms. Cathay, question.
- 28:40Speaker 1: You have no reason to believe that she's talking about
- 28:42Speaker 1: a relationship with you and logistics of how that will work.
- 28:45Speaker 1: With Mr. Epstein being involved? Answer. Yeah, I think it was.
- 28:49Speaker 1: I'm reading it as two separate things. You know, I
- 28:51Speaker 1: was reading it as her work relationship with Mr. Epstein
- 28:55Speaker 1: and me being in her life. Question. We can step
- 28:59Speaker 1: back and make it more general, though. Based on this
- 29:01Speaker 1: email and what we're seeing here, did Ms. Maxwell need
- 29:04Speaker 1: to be discussing her relationship either with Mr. Epstein or
- 29:07Speaker 1: with you and how those two would work together? Answer.
- 29:11Speaker 1: I don't know. Agree. That is a bit odd. Question.
- 29:14Speaker 1: do you think Ms. Maxwell was seeking Mr. Epstein's approval
- 29:17Speaker 1: of your relationship with her? Answer, I think in a way, yes. Question,
- 29:22Speaker 1: do you feel that that could have had a negative
- 29:24Speaker 1: impact on your relationship with her if he had disapproved? Answer,
- 29:28Speaker 1: I do not know. Question, do you think that she
- 29:32Speaker 1: would have ended the relationship if he had disapproved? Answer,
- 29:35Speaker 1: I do not know. Question, how often did you and Ms.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Maxwell discuss Mr. Epstein's opinions of your relationship in general? Answer,
- 29:42Speaker 1: I don't recall. Question, did you ever? Did you ever
- 29:47Speaker 1: discuss your relationship with Mr. Epstein and Ms. Maxwell? Answer, no. Question,
- 29:53Speaker 1: did Ms. Maxwell ever express a desire to stop working
- 29:56Speaker 1: for Mr. Epstein? Answer, not that I know of. I
- 29:59Speaker 1: wanted her to stop working for Mr. Epstein. Question, did
- 30:02Speaker 1: she disagree with you? Were those conversations that you had often? Answer,
- 30:07Speaker 1: I don't remember a disagreement over that. Question, and why
- 30:10Speaker 1: did you want her to stop working for him? Answer,
- 30:13Speaker 1: because he was her ex-boyfriend. I was just uncomfortable with it. Question,
- 30:18Speaker 1: there was no specific reason that you were uncomfortable. Answer, no. Question,
- 30:22Speaker 1: just in general, that he was her ex-boyfriend. Answer, yes. Mr. Spector, question.
- 30:28Speaker 1: You mentioned that the reason you ended the relationship in
- 30:31Speaker 1: 2010 was because you knew you were never going to
- 30:33Speaker 1: marry her. Is that right? Answer, yes. Question, did that
- 30:36Speaker 1: decision to break up, did it have anything to do
- 30:38Speaker 1: with the continued employment with Mr. Epstein? Answer, I mean,
- 30:42Speaker 1: I wasn't sure that she was working for Mr. Epstein
- 30:45Speaker 1: at that point in time, but he was a continuous
- 30:47Speaker 1: presence in her life. Question, and was that presence part
- 30:52Speaker 1: of what made you want to end things? Answer, maybe
- 30:55Speaker 1: in a small way. but it wasn't the primary driving factor. Question,
- 30:59Speaker 1: why were you so sure that you weren't going to
- 31:01Speaker 1: marry her? Answer, it's just the relationship had kind of
- 31:04Speaker 1: run its course. I just knew that wasn't right for me. Ms. Cathay, question, Mr. Wade,
- 31:10Speaker 1: I'd like to pivot now to your connections to the
- 31:12Speaker 1: Clinton family. When did you first meet President Clinton? Answer,
- 31:16Speaker 1: in the late 90s, 98 or 99, in Dublin, Ireland,
- 31:19Speaker 1: at a Gateway event. Question, can you describe a little
- 31:23Speaker 1: bit more of the circumstances? Who introduced you to President Clinton? Answer,
- 31:27Speaker 1: I was like, met him himself. He pulled up to
- 31:29Speaker 1: our factory in a limo and he got out by
- 31:31Speaker 1: himself and I greeted him. Question, you said this was
- 31:35Speaker 1: an event. Answer, yes. Question, who else was at the event? Answer,
- 31:39Speaker 1: the Prime Minister of Ireland and around 2,500 other people.
- 31:43Speaker 1: The ambassadors were signing a digital treaty between Ireland and
- 31:47Speaker 1: the United States. Question, what did you discuss with President
- 31:51Speaker 1: Clinton on that day? Answer, it was all business. I
- 31:54Speaker 1: walked him through our operation, and then we discussed the
- 31:56Speaker 1: logistics of the event, signing the treaty. And then we
- 31:59Speaker 1: went live on CNN.com, and we all gave speeches. And
- 32:03Speaker 1: then I rushed out to beat him, to beat his
- 32:06Speaker 1: airplane out. Question, when did you first meet Secretary Clinton? Answer,
- 32:10Speaker 1: and I believe it was later than that, after he
- 32:12Speaker 1: left office, early 2000s. Question, can you describe the circumstances
- 32:17Speaker 1: surrounding your first meeting with Secretary Clinton? Answer, the first
- 32:21Speaker 1: time I recall meeting Secretary Clinton was at a dinner,
- 32:24Speaker 1: a small, very private dinner in New York. Answer, or
- 32:27Speaker 1: question in New York, who else was present? Answer, it
- 32:30Speaker 1: was President and Secretary Clinton. Mr., Ms. Callen, can we
- 32:34Speaker 1: go off record? They go off record, come back on. Ashworth. No,
- 32:39Speaker 1: she asked a question about it. Mr. Waite, I'll answer.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Ashworth jumps in. If your client is refusing to answer
- 32:45Speaker 1: the question. Mr. Waite, I'll answer the question. It was
- 32:49Speaker 1: Ted Danson. and Mary Steenburgen. Ms. Ashworth, thank you. Ms. Cathay,
- 32:54Speaker 1: thank you. And who introduced you to Secretary Clinton? Answer,
- 32:57Speaker 1: I don't recall, but we all showed up at dinner. Question,
- 33:00Speaker 1: do you recall any of the initial conversation that you
- 33:02Speaker 1: had with her? Answer, no. It was just typical dinner conversations,
- 33:06Speaker 1: what was going on? Question, can you briefly describe the
- 33:10Speaker 1: nature and the extent of your relationship with President Clinton? Answer,
- 33:14Speaker 1: I think we were friends. We became friends. I played
- 33:17Speaker 1: golf with him quite a few times. I traveled with
- 33:20Speaker 1: him on a few trips, would see him and catch
- 33:22Speaker 1: up over coffee or lunch when I was in New York,
- 33:25Speaker 1: or he was on the West Coast and still do. Question,
- 33:28Speaker 1: can you estimate about how frequently you would see President Clinton? Answer,
- 33:32Speaker 1: once or twice a year. Question, did you ever have
- 33:34Speaker 1: any business with President Clinton? Answer, I was a donor
- 33:38Speaker 1: to the Clinton Library. Question, were you a donor to
- 33:41Speaker 1: any other organization or foundation that was related to President Clinton? Answer,
- 33:46Speaker 1: I might have done some small grants to the Clinton Foundation.
- 33:49Speaker 1: The big grant I gave was to support his construction
- 33:52Speaker 1: of the library. Question, and we'll return to that in
- 33:56Speaker 1: a little bit, the Clinton Foundation. But for now, can
- 33:59Speaker 1: you briefly describe the extent and nature of your relationship
- 34:03Speaker 1: with Secretary Clinton? Answer, yeah, I'm not as close as
- 34:07Speaker 1: with the president, but I've met her on several multiple occasions.
- 34:10Speaker 1: She's been to my home. I've been to her home.
- 34:12Speaker 1: So I met her on multiple occasions. Yeah. Question, and
- 34:16Speaker 1: you said that you've been to her home. Which home
- 34:18Speaker 1: is that? Answer, the home in Chappaqua, as well as
- 34:21Speaker 1: her home in D.C., which I don't know if she
- 34:24Speaker 1: still has that home or not. Question, how many times
- 34:27Speaker 1: did you visit the home in Chappaqua? Answer, I don't
- 34:29Speaker 1: recall exactly, two or three. Question, do you recall any
- 34:33Speaker 1: specific times that you went? Can you recount who else
- 34:35Speaker 1: was there with you? Answer, typically, I would have been
- 34:38Speaker 1: by myself. Question, there was no other occasions where? Answer,
- 34:42Speaker 1: at the home in Chappaqua. Question, at the home in Chappaqua, yes. Answer,
- 34:47Speaker 1: at the home in Chappaqua, yeah. It was typically just me,
- 34:49Speaker 1: I believe so. Question, and her other home. How often
- 34:53Speaker 1: did you visit there? Answer, just once, and that was
- 34:57Speaker 1: when she was running for president, and I do believe Ms.
- 34:59Speaker 1: Maxwell was with me at that. Question, do you remember
- 35:02Speaker 1: what year that was? Answer, that would have been before
- 35:06Speaker 1: the 2008 election, so probably 2007, I'm guessing. Question, and
- 35:11Speaker 1: was President Clinton there as well? Answer, no. Question, I'm
- 35:14Speaker 1: sorry if you said that. Question, do you still communicate
- 35:17Speaker 1: with President Clinton? Answer, yes. Question, about how often? Answer,
- 35:22Speaker 1: like I said, once or twice a year. Question, and
- 35:24Speaker 1: Secretary Clinton, same question. Answer, I haven't seen her in
- 35:27Speaker 1: a while. Mr. Spector, question, have you communicated with either
- 35:31Speaker 1: of them this year? Mr. Waite, I don't believe so. Mr. Spector,
- 35:36Speaker 1: so you've not discussed their depositions or your transcribed interview
- 35:39Speaker 1: with them? Mr. Waite, no. Ms. Cathay, question, When did
- 35:43Speaker 1: you first meet Chelsea Clinton? Answer, that's a good question.
- 35:47Speaker 1: I don't remember when I first met Chelsea, but I've
- 35:49Speaker 1: known her for quite some time. Question, I believe Secretary
- 35:52Speaker 1: Clinton testified to this committee that you met the Clintons
- 35:55Speaker 1: in the early 90s. Is that accurate? Answer, I don't
- 35:58Speaker 1: recall meeting them in the early 90s. I don't recall
- 36:01Speaker 1: meeting them until the late 90s. Question, the late 90s. Answer, yeah. Question,
- 36:06Speaker 1: would you have met Chelsea Clinton around the late 90s? Answer,
- 36:10Speaker 1: I don't think I met Chelsea Clinton until the early 2000s. Question,
- 36:14Speaker 1: and do you remember the circumstances? Answer, I don't remember.
- 36:18Speaker 1: At least that's the way I remember it. Question, do
- 36:20Speaker 1: you remember who introduced you or connected you to her? Answer,
- 36:23Speaker 1: I don't remember exactly, sorry. Question, can you describe the
- 36:27Speaker 1: nature and extent of your relationship with Chelsea Clinton? Answer,
- 36:31Speaker 1: I think we're close friends. Question, are you currently close friends? Answer, yes. Question,
- 36:37Speaker 1: and we'll discuss a little bit more about Chelsea Clinton
- 36:39Speaker 1: later at the wedding event. But do you still communicate
- 36:42Speaker 1: with any other member of the Clinton family? Answer, Chelsea
- 36:45Speaker 1: and her husband, Mark. Question, do you see each other
- 36:48Speaker 1: socially every year? Answer, not very often, but a few
- 36:51Speaker 1: times a year. Question, and how would you characterize your
- 36:55Speaker 1: relationship with the Clintons at the time that you met Ms. Maxwell? Answer,
- 36:59Speaker 1: could you just at the time I met Ms. Maxwell? Question, yes. Answer, oh, again,
- 37:04Speaker 1: I was just getting to know them. I think I'd
- 37:06Speaker 1: already made my donation to the library, so it was
- 37:09Speaker 1: more as kind of a donor, I think, at that point. Question,
- 37:12Speaker 1: did Ms. Maxwell know the Clintons before she met you? Answer,
- 37:16Speaker 1: she was. I wouldn't say the Clintons. I think she
- 37:18Speaker 1: knew President Clinton. Answer, just President Clinton. Answer, yeah. Question,
- 37:24Speaker 1: she did not. Gets cut off by weight. She was
- 37:26Speaker 1: traveling with President Clinton when I met her. Question, so
- 37:29Speaker 1: to be clear, she did not know Secretary Clinton at
- 37:32Speaker 1: the time. Answer, I don't know. I don't believe so.
- 37:35Speaker 1: I don't know for sure. I don't believe so. Mr. Spector,
- 37:38Speaker 1: so you met Ghislaine Maxwell in 2003. You met Bill
- 37:41Speaker 1: Clinton in the late 90s. Ghislaine Maxwell knew President Clinton
- 37:45Speaker 1: before she met you. So you had a mutual friend
- 37:48Speaker 1: in President Clinton. Did you ever have a conversation with
- 37:51Speaker 1: President Clinton about Ghislaine Maxwell before he met Ghislaine Maxwell? Mr. Waite, no. Ms. Cathay, question.
- 37:58Speaker 1: How did Ms. Maxwell meet President Clinton? Answer, I don't
- 38:01Speaker 1: know for sure. Question, do you know how she met
- 38:04Speaker 1: Secretary Clinton? Answer, I don't know. I assume it would
- 38:07Speaker 1: have been through me at some point. Question, and you
- 38:10Speaker 1: don't remember when that would have been. Answer, I don't
- 38:13Speaker 1: recall specifically. Question, understood. And then how would you characterize
- 38:17Speaker 1: your relationship with the Clintons later on while you and Ms.
- 38:20Speaker 1: Maxwell were dating? Answer, we attended a lot of CGI events.
- 38:25Speaker 1: There was a lot, you know, dinners. It was, you know, cordial, social. Question,
- 38:29Speaker 1: during his deposition to this committee, President Clinton testified that
- 38:32Speaker 1: he felt he was closer to Ms. Maxwell because of you.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Why do you think President Clinton would say that you
- 38:38Speaker 1: were the reason he was closer to Ms. Maxwell? Answer again,
- 38:41Speaker 1: I don't know. I think it's because I was spending
- 38:43Speaker 1: a lot of time with them. Question, did the Clintons
- 38:46Speaker 1: spend time with you? To be more specific, did President
- 38:49Speaker 1: Clinton and Secretary Clinton spend time with you and Ms.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Maxwell in social settings, outside of events, as a couple? Answer,
- 38:56Speaker 1: I don't recall any instances of spending time with Ms. Maxwell,
- 39:00Speaker 1: Secretary Clinton, and President Clinton without, you know, alone or separately.
- 39:04Speaker 1: I don't recall that ever happening. Question, what about Chelsea
- 39:07Speaker 1: Clinton and her husband, you and Ms. Maxwell? Answer, that's possible. Question,
- 39:12Speaker 1: can you think of any specific instance? Answer, I can't.
- 39:16Speaker 1: I'm sorry. Gets cut off. Question, about what time in
- 39:19Speaker 1: your relationship with Ms. Maxwell were you spending time with
- 39:23Speaker 1: Chelsea Clinton and her husband? Can you estimate specific years
- 39:27Speaker 1: or time frame of the time that you were spending
- 39:29Speaker 1: with Chelsea Clinton and her husband and you and Ms. Maxwell? Answer, probably,
- 39:34Speaker 1: you know, it would have been the time closer to
- 39:36Speaker 1: their wedding. Question understood. All right, folks, we're going to
- 39:41Speaker 1: wrap up right here. And in the next episode dealing
