- 0:00The third quarter of 2026 will be a quarter to remember.
- 0:04At the end of June, 10-year yields
- 0:06hovered around a 4.37%,
- 0:09only to find themselves near a 5.35% by the end of September.
- 0:14This 100 basis point rise came in a very short period of time,
- 0:17both at 10 and 30-year.
- 0:18Treasury yields are at levels that we haven't seen since 2002.
- 0:22While most of the movement
- 0:24has to do with the recalibration of growth, consumer spending
- 0:28and the fact that, you know,
- 0:29GDP is expected to be strong again in the third quarter,
- 0:33it still has put a weigh on interest rates.
- 0:36With the Fed projected to increase
- 0:39the Fed funds rate by about 75 to 100
- 0:41basis points over the next year.
- 0:43We find this view a little bit hawkish
- 0:46while we continue to think growth will remain above trend,
- 0:49and we look for inflation to start to decline in 2027.
- 0:53We feel the Fed
- 0:54is giving the market's pricing in a bit of a hawkish view.
- 0:57Given that outlook we're taking a look at opportunities
- 1:00within the fixed income sector,
- 1:01particularly that of spread product.
- 1:03For most of the year,
- 1:04our allocation has remained in the short end of the yield curve.
- 1:07We wanted to compound that income in the short end
- 1:09without taking on too much interest rate risk.
- 1:12As time has gone on and interest rates have risen.
- 1:14We started to move a little bit
- 1:15out of the curve to that 5 to 7 year area of the curve,
- 1:19particularly when it comes to fixed income spread product.
- 1:21What yields it deals that individuals are earning today
- 1:24and the ability
- 1:25to compound that income
- 1:26or yields that we haven't seen in several decades.
- 1:29The benefit to earning fixed income right
- 1:31now, particularly given the fact
- 1:32the market is pricing in such exuberance in regard to growth.
- 1:36The market's pricing in the expectation that that 2%
- 1:392% target won't come for at least another year and a half
- 1:42has fixed income looking really attractive for once
- 1:46and for a very long time. I should say.
- 1:47We have the ability
- 1:48to have price appreciation
- 1:50as we expect yields to come down over the next six months.
- 1:53Also, combined with that compounding income of locking in deals
- 1:57while we still staying with the higher quality, as of now,
- 1:59we are starting to see a wider opportunity
- 2:01set within fixed income.
- 2:03So within your portfolio, within your fixed income portfolio,
- 2:06we still prefer the short end in terms of US treasuries
- 2:09and our spread products such as agency MBS.
- 2:12Investment grade corporates
- 2:14are in that intermediate part of the curve.
- 2:16Well, we can't guarantee that.
- 2:17We've seen the high end rates.
- 2:19The magnitude of the move
- 2:20that we've seen during the third quarter will go
- 2:22is will be one to remember.
- 2:24And our expectation again is that the Fed hikes in December,
- 2:27but then stays fairly quiet for some months, only to cut in 2027.
- 2:32This gives fixed income investors
- 2:33the opportunity to lock in today and compound that income.
