Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Is the Mike King situation really a big deal?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Mike King. You cannot have it both ways with Mike King.
- 0:04Speaker 1: You can't say you care about and want to hear
- 0:07Speaker 1: from people with so called lived experience and then dismiss
- 0:11Speaker 1: them when you don't like what they say. Everyone knows
- 0:15Speaker 1: he doesn't have a PhD in mental health studies. Settled
- 0:18Speaker 1: down sally, he looked to me to simply be riffing
- 0:21Speaker 1: his opinion. So what props to the Mental Health Foundation
- 0:24Speaker 1: and to the minister, who've both handled their responses pretty well.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I reckon giving kudos to Mike for his incredible work
- 0:31Speaker 1: with Kiwi kids while also pointing out the fact there's
- 0:34Speaker 1: research out there that doesn't support his worldview. Is there
- 0:37Speaker 1: really a big deal here outside of Labour trying to
- 0:40Speaker 1: score a hit job because they're pissed that King bashed
- 0:43Speaker 1: them at the last election. Also, what is really worse
- 0:47Speaker 1: for mental health in this country Mike King going on
- 0:50Speaker 1: a booze rant or Labor spending one point eight billion
- 0:54Speaker 1: dollars in delivering not a single new acute mental health
- 0:57Speaker 1: bed in five years? What's to use the terms that
- 1:00Speaker 1: they love more dangerous for our vulnerable youth and Tamadiki.
- 1:06Speaker 1: It's not Mike King that's for sure. We can have
- 1:08Speaker 1: all the experts and the researchers and the academics and
- 1:11Speaker 1: the politicians in the world writing essay after essay at
- 1:15Speaker 1: great expense explaining our mental health problems, and it's fine
- 1:18Speaker 1: that they do, but what they will never deliver is
- 1:22Speaker 1: anything like the practical, grassroots counseling sessions and awareness that
- 1:28Speaker 1: Mike King has for our kids for years. For more
