- 0:02Speaker 1: Get the bag off the TV. I'm not watching that.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Two she lays stand before me. Hey, two folks stand
- 0:18Speaker 1: before me. But I only have one photo in my hands,
- 0:22Speaker 1: and that photo represents the person who will continue on
- 0:25Speaker 1: in the hopes of becoming America's next Top Model. The
- 0:29Speaker 1: person I do not name must immediately return to your house,
- 0:33Speaker 1: pack your bags, and get the funk out of here,
- 0:36Speaker 1: because you're dead to me. Today we are talking about
- 0:41Speaker 1: the groundbreaking reality television competition America's Next Top Model, and
- 0:49Speaker 1: we have Travell Anderson here to talk about it with us,
- 0:53Speaker 1: because this is like a Virgin the show where we
- 0:55Speaker 1: give yesterday's pop culture today's takes. I'm Rose, damn you,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and I'm Fran Toronto, and I have been preparing for
- 1:02Speaker 1: this episode for months. Literally, as the person who uses
- 1:08Speaker 1: someone else's Hulu account and gave that log in to
- 1:11Speaker 1: Fran and sees what Fran is watching on Hulu, I
- 1:14Speaker 1: can confirm that France has been watching nothing but Top
- 1:18Speaker 1: Bottle from months. It is so addictive and really interesting
- 1:22Speaker 1: to watch. We'll get into interesting is a good word
- 1:27Speaker 1: for it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, And I think that honestly,
- 1:30Speaker 1: a lot of the conversations people are having on social
- 1:32Speaker 1: media about like this show and like canceling Tyra whatnot.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I think that kind of black nuanceenter a little boring,
- 1:39Speaker 1: but we'll get into that which today we're going to
- 1:41Speaker 1: talk about the uncancellable Tyra Banks. Yes, that's right. I
- 1:49Speaker 1: finally watched the new Scream movie last night. Five Cream,
- 1:53Speaker 1: five Cream. Have you seen it yet? Yeah? Okay, I did.
- 1:56Speaker 1: When Dewey died. I mean I didn't cry, but I
- 2:00Speaker 1: felt a little emotional. What about the Dewy death made
- 2:04Speaker 1: you cry? I don't know, it just was and it
- 2:07Speaker 1: was more like um Courtney Cox's reaction to it, and
- 2:11Speaker 1: like her extension work of like whipping her head around
- 2:15Speaker 1: and her hair being everywhere, like you know, not a
- 2:17Speaker 1: tear falling from her eyes, but it was. I thought
- 2:20Speaker 1: it was generally a pretty good Scream movie. I don't
- 2:24Speaker 1: think it was quite as smart as the last Scream movie.
- 2:31Speaker 1: It was a standout. It was a really good um
- 2:34Speaker 1: revamping of the formula with Emma Roberts. And I really
- 2:39Speaker 1: hope that since there is a six one being made,
- 2:41Speaker 1: that they do bring back Kirby as played by Hayden Penetier.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I would die, Oh my gosh, this movie does confirm
- 2:51Speaker 1: that she's alive and survived the last movie, so they
- 2:56Speaker 1: need to bring her back. She needs to actually be
- 2:57Speaker 1: a lesbian this time. I want her to the same haircut.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Last night, I watched A Bug's Life, which stars Hayden
- 3:03Speaker 1: Penetier as Dot the like tiny princess, but the world
- 3:07Speaker 1: is ready for a for a Penetier assance. Absolutely, did
- 3:11Speaker 1: you ever watch Nashville? No, but I watched the first
- 3:16Speaker 1: couple of seasons and like, that's the first couple of seas.
- 3:20Speaker 1: I thought you were gonna say, the first couple of episodes.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I watched the first couple. I watched the first three
- 3:24Speaker 1: seasons and it was gripping, and Hayden was great in it,
- 3:28Speaker 1: and Connie Britten is a legend. Her Instagram bio is
- 3:32Speaker 1: still hey, y'all, y'all. Okay, wait back to Scream. The
- 3:36Speaker 1: franchise thrives on meta humor, and that's like always what
- 3:39Speaker 1: it's been about. But I feel like they tried to
- 3:43Speaker 1: make the magic happen too many times with this movie,
- 3:46Speaker 1: because like the meta humor I think was so absurd
- 3:50Speaker 1: in the fourth movie, Like what they are trying to
- 3:52Speaker 1: get away with in terms of meta jokes has like
- 3:55Speaker 1: accrued and accrud and a crude movie by movie, and
- 3:57Speaker 1: now by this movie, it's like I wish you had
- 4:00Speaker 1: started fresh and found other jokes to make, because I
- 4:03Speaker 1: actually didn't feel like there were a lot of jokes,
- 4:06Speaker 1: or at least ones that I remember, outside of the
- 4:08Speaker 1: fact that like, oh, we're in a scary movie, and
- 4:10Speaker 1: it's funny that we're talking about scary movies, you know
- 4:12Speaker 1: what I mean? Yeah, yeah, I get that. It just
- 4:16Speaker 1: became repetitive to me in in a way that I
- 4:18Speaker 1: had never felt watching other screen movies. But if you
- 4:22Speaker 1: want to hear more about screen movies, you can go
- 4:24Speaker 1: back and listen to our episode on Scream and Slasher Flicks,
- 4:29Speaker 1: The Final Doll, which is one of our better episode titles.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Are we excited about this restored gay kiss in the
- 4:37Speaker 1: hot Buzz Lightyear movie? Only if it looks like the
- 4:41Speaker 1: fan art that I sent you of Buzz pulling Woody's string.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Let me tell you first of all, I mean, I'm
- 4:51Speaker 1: sure everyone has already discussed this on the internet, but
- 4:53Speaker 1: Buzz is so hot in this trailer, and we know
- 4:58Speaker 1: that he's not going to be the gay one, which suck,
- 5:01Speaker 1: but like apparently the gay kiss scene was restored into
- 5:06Speaker 1: the movie as which means it was previously edited or
- 5:09Speaker 1: censored out, which Disney has a history of doing. And
- 5:12Speaker 1: you know, it's probably like a peck of the frame. Yeah,
- 5:18Speaker 1: it's gonna be as lame as honestly Robert Pattinson kissing
- 5:21Speaker 1: Zoe Kravitz in the Batman Movie, if not worse unless
- 5:25Speaker 1: buzz like your show's whole I'm not interested. Yeah, and
- 5:30Speaker 1: what sucks because he's a toy. Yeah, And I wanted
- 5:34Speaker 1: to bring it up as like an extension of like
- 5:36Speaker 1: last week's convo about like the whole like don't say
- 5:38Speaker 1: a Gay Bell thing. It actually is like so shitty
- 5:43Speaker 1: that they get to have like a press release or
- 5:46Speaker 1: headline about this new gay moment that was already like
- 5:50Speaker 1: censored out, like in reaction to like all this outrage
- 5:54Speaker 1: over they don't say gay Bell. It's like everything. I
- 5:57Speaker 1: think it's pretty transparent though, because everything I've seen about
- 6:01Speaker 1: it immediately then says this comes after Disney staffers revolted
- 6:07Speaker 1: following their CEOs funk up of supporting the Don't Say
- 6:11Speaker 1: Gay bill, So I don't know, it's like pretty transparent.
- 6:15Speaker 1: And probably we'll still see the movie. Yes, I'm definitely
- 6:18Speaker 1: gonna see it. I think that honestly, the virgins have
- 6:21Speaker 1: to know that. Like you and I, we have this
- 6:23Speaker 1: like like recurring bit on our show. We're like something
- 6:27Speaker 1: is announced about a new gay character in a Marvel
- 6:29Speaker 1: movie or like a new gay something in a Disney whatever,
- 6:32Speaker 1: and we're always like, like it's so annoying, and like
- 6:35Speaker 1: the reason this is like so frustrating is because corporations
- 6:40Speaker 1: get to like do extremely like homophobic and transphobic things
- 6:46Speaker 1: and then like spin it around and like profit off
- 6:49Speaker 1: of it by way of like quote unquote representation matters
- 6:53Speaker 1: kind of bullshit, you know, but it's like, I don't know,
- 6:56Speaker 1: we just over emphasize the importance of representation and we
- 6:59Speaker 1: say representation matters, and like if you go and see
- 7:02Speaker 1: our representation, it's like activism and like you feel empowered,
- 7:05Speaker 1: but it's like empowered to do activism is activism, yeah, exactly.
- 7:10Speaker 1: And that's the other thing is like empowered to do what,
- 7:12Speaker 1: like empowered to fight entities like Disney. Like that is
- 7:17Speaker 1: like literally the movie is proselytizing something that is in
- 7:21Speaker 1: direct diametric opposition to the very values that the actual
- 7:25Speaker 1: institution stands for. And the only reason that they're going
- 7:29Speaker 1: back on their ways is because they're realizing that they're
- 7:33Speaker 1: losing profit. Like I just you can never look to
- 7:38Speaker 1: a corporation like Disney for a meaningful political action, And
- 7:45Speaker 1: I get it. I want children to also grow up
- 7:48Speaker 1: in a world where they see themselves reflected in the
- 7:50Speaker 1: media they consume, but it exists other places. They'll find
- 7:55Speaker 1: it other places. And like Disney is just always going
- 7:58Speaker 1: to be too scared about alienating their conservative consumers, then
- 8:06Speaker 1: about pandering to what they see as a very small
- 8:11Speaker 1: minority of the marketplace until someone hires me to do
- 8:17Speaker 1: a gay Prince story. I refuse to believe that anything
- 8:21Speaker 1: Disney does. Yeah, and I'll just keep writing fan fiction.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I should speaking of I did like that line and
- 8:27Speaker 1: scream where you were like, are you saying I'm in
- 8:29Speaker 1: fan fucking fiction? It was that was actually really good.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I'm speaking of fan fiction. Um Fran implored me to
- 8:39Speaker 1: watch the new Apple TV series We Crashed this weekend,
- 8:43Speaker 1: is fan fiction about the lives of Adam Newman and
- 8:47Speaker 1: his wife, who were the founders of We Work. It's
- 8:51Speaker 1: not good. It's not good. Right, it's not good, And like,
- 8:55Speaker 1: why is it called we crashed? It should be like
- 8:57Speaker 1: we flopped, We flopped, But it's it's based on a podcast,
- 9:02Speaker 1: which like similarly to The Dropout. It's like this TV
- 9:06Speaker 1: show about a scam. It's based on a podcast that
- 9:09Speaker 1: like investigates the lives of the people who perpetrated the
- 9:14Speaker 1: scam and tries to figure out why they did it.
- 9:16Speaker 1: But there's just nothing not even just like redeemable about
- 9:21Speaker 1: the two characters. It's just they're just not interesting. And
- 9:24Speaker 1: Jared leto, we need to stop letting him into makeup trailers.
- 9:29Speaker 1: And you know, I watched the documentary about the whole
- 9:32Speaker 1: We Work thing, and I went back and looked at
- 9:35Speaker 1: photos of Out of Newman after watching the show this weekend,
- 9:38Speaker 1: and like, the stuff that Jared let us doing is
- 9:41Speaker 1: not even making him look like the person he's playing.
- 9:44Speaker 1: It's just drag. It's so dumb. Yeah, it's frustrating. There's
- 9:48Speaker 1: nothing compelling about their romance to me, like, I don't understand.
- 9:52Speaker 1: I also agree, I don't understand why Anna is taking
- 9:55Speaker 1: this role. Like I'm really proud of her for, you know,
- 9:57Speaker 1: disappearing into the character by bringing her voice to a
- 10:00Speaker 1: slightly lower register so that she sounds like poor sha ROSSI.
- 10:05Speaker 1: But it's like the soundtrack also, like rather the score
- 10:10Speaker 1: really positions the two of them as this like tragic
- 10:14Speaker 1: hero story, like you're really kind of ass yeah, and
- 10:19Speaker 1: you're but they're trying to make you feel like a
- 10:22Speaker 1: lot more empathy for like their romance, but there's nothing
- 10:26Speaker 1: compelling about it. And like, I think like it would
- 10:28Speaker 1: have been so much more successful if Anne Hathaway was
- 10:31Speaker 1: a huge asshole instead of like a subtle kind of
- 10:35Speaker 1: vegan ass well, the show was very sympathetic towards her.
- 10:39Speaker 1: I do. I do like how Rebecca, who Anne Hathaway
- 10:42Speaker 1: is playing, is the cousin of Gwyneth Paltrow, and I
- 10:46Speaker 1: love every time they mentioned Gwyneth or like at her wedding,
- 10:49Speaker 1: people keep asking if Gwyneth is going to come and
- 10:52Speaker 1: she gets increasingly furious about it. I thought that was
- 10:55Speaker 1: funny and like, Anne Hathaway must know Gwyneth Paltrow, but
- 10:58Speaker 1: Gwyneth is very like mean, she loves like self referential humor,
- 11:02Speaker 1: so she has no idea the show exists, so she
- 11:04Speaker 1: probably doesn't even know this woman is her cousin exactly exactly. Yeah, yeah,
- 11:09Speaker 1: I think that just and like thrives when she gets
- 11:11Speaker 1: to play an asshole, like when I think of Oceans
- 11:15Speaker 1: eight or The Witches, the Witches or um even Catwoman,
- 11:20Speaker 1: Like she actually is really good at being a bit
- 11:23Speaker 1: And I kind of wish that I had seen it here.
- 11:25Speaker 1: But when thing's for sure, Jared Leto he went on
- 11:28Speaker 1: down to the dere Kensley School of Dialect Coaching and
- 11:32Speaker 1: he brought us a brand new accent and let me
- 11:35Speaker 1: tell you, I actually enjoy it. It's horrible, but I
- 11:38Speaker 1: I do like the accent. Um. Okay, did you listen
- 11:42Speaker 1: to the new Charlie xc X this weekend? I did. Yeah,
- 11:45Speaker 1: I think it's really good. I think it needs to
- 11:47Speaker 1: be twice as long as it is. It is. It
- 11:50Speaker 1: is an EP, it is not an album. Um, but
- 11:53Speaker 1: it's really good. I I guess I hadn't spent a
- 11:55Speaker 1: lot of time with the stuff that she's already released.
- 11:58Speaker 1: The arena song is good, Aby is good. I really
- 12:01Speaker 1: like Constant Repeat, Yuck is great. It's a really solid
- 12:06Speaker 1: little album. Um, and I just it. It's just insane
- 12:10Speaker 1: that it's thirty three minutes long, but I guess like
- 12:14Speaker 1: it's it's all killer, no filler, and like Charlie just
- 12:18Speaker 1: like didn't make the filler tracks, which you know, I
- 12:21Speaker 1: guess is is what it is. I just would like
- 12:24Speaker 1: a little more. I think I would too. I felt like,
- 12:28Speaker 1: I mean, Yuck is also my favorite song, even though
- 12:31Speaker 1: it's like pretty much a do Jaquet song. I mean,
- 12:33Speaker 1: she does her kind of signature vocal distortion thing on
- 12:36Speaker 1: these tracks, but not the kind of like Sophie esque hyperpop.
- 12:41Speaker 1: I'm glad she's moved on from hyperpop and didn't get
- 12:45Speaker 1: stuck in it because her last couple releases. While while
- 12:51Speaker 1: I do think Charlie is always on the cutting edge
- 12:53Speaker 1: of what's next in pop music, like it was starting
- 12:56Speaker 1: to feel like she was staying at that party a
- 12:59Speaker 1: little too long, and I'm happy that she has has
- 13:03Speaker 1: looked forward exactly, and like I don't know, I really
- 13:08Speaker 1: like I didn't really listen to new Shapes, and then
- 13:10Speaker 1: I went back and I was like, oh yeah, like
- 13:11Speaker 1: Caroline's like verse on this like eats and like I
- 13:14Speaker 1: love the first song cry Charlie, Caroline Chris, my friend
- 13:18Speaker 1: my friend Ryan was like, thoughts of trap stamp right there,
- 13:22Speaker 1: some gay is going to get that it'll be interesting
- 13:24Speaker 1: to see what is next for her, what her touring.
- 13:29Speaker 1: This album looks like. I did find myself thinking, like,
- 13:33Speaker 1: do any straight people sent to Charlie because she feels like,
- 13:40Speaker 1: and I don't mean this in a mean way, like
- 13:42Speaker 1: Charlie feels like an inside joke, Like she feels like
- 13:45Speaker 1: a meme that is only for gay people. It feels
- 13:48Speaker 1: like music only gay people can hear. And I know,
- 13:52Speaker 1: I'm sure there are some straight people who listen to Charlie,
- 13:55Speaker 1: but like, but this does feel like, especially since it's
- 13:58Speaker 1: ending her contract with a record label, it feels like
- 14:00Speaker 1: a sellout album. And when I say sell out, I
- 14:03Speaker 1: don't mean that a negative way. I actually don't mind
- 14:05Speaker 1: when artists sell out sometimes. In fact, I think sometimes
- 14:08Speaker 1: their music gets better. But this album really feels like
- 14:12Speaker 1: it's here for bangers and for TikTok sounds. And I
- 14:15Speaker 1: also think she played with that in the promotion. She
- 14:18Speaker 1: like tweeted a lot of things that were like doing
- 14:21Speaker 1: this for my label, that kind of stuff. Like I
- 14:24Speaker 1: think she is playing into the idea of herself as
- 14:28Speaker 1: like a major label pop star, and like that's part
- 14:31Speaker 1: of the persona she's putting on for this album cycle, right,
- 14:36Speaker 1: and that's I think maybe why the first video was
- 14:39Speaker 1: a funeral, because she's like killing part of her career.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Oh I love that. Honestly, if if she
- 14:48Speaker 1: continues to sell out, I will see her Vegas residency.
- 14:52Speaker 1: I I really wonder what the rest of her career
- 14:56Speaker 1: is going to look like and like, in you know,
- 15:00Speaker 1: twenty years, who is the artist that Charlie xc X
- 15:03Speaker 1: is going to be. I think that this could be
- 15:06Speaker 1: the album where it's no longer like, you know, a
- 15:08Speaker 1: gay dog whistle, or she could really you know, stay
- 15:12Speaker 1: a niche artist and just like keep making really like
- 15:16Speaker 1: forward thinking pop music. I guess we should wrap up
- 15:20Speaker 1: with talking about drag race Um. This week was the
- 15:23Speaker 1: lip Sync smack Down Extravaganza. I mean, despite being furious
- 15:28Speaker 1: that no one was eliminated last week, I did think
- 15:31Speaker 1: this was a fun episode. I liked all the queens
- 15:33Speaker 1: having the chance to lip sync, and it just further
- 15:37Speaker 1: confirmed for me that Willow Hill will win this season.
- 15:40Speaker 1: I will say I don't think she necessarily like outright
- 15:45Speaker 1: one that lip sync over Bosco. I think there's an
- 15:49Speaker 1: argument to be made either way, Like they were both
- 15:52Speaker 1: doing kind of similar things I think energetically. But she's
- 15:57Speaker 1: playing the game very smart, she really is. I mean
- 16:00Speaker 1: it's she's been hiding her talent from the beginning. And
- 16:03Speaker 1: if I picking picking Bosco because she knew that Bosco
- 16:08Speaker 1: would pick the song she wanted to, She's ing for
- 16:11Speaker 1: d Chess. That is so good, And I will disagree
- 16:16Speaker 1: with you slightly. I think willow Hill's lip sync is
- 16:21Speaker 1: one of my favorite performances I have seen on drag
- 16:25Speaker 1: Race period. It's good. It was good, but it's it
- 16:28Speaker 1: was the kind of lip sync that like, it was good,
- 16:32Speaker 1: but if I was watching it in a bar, I
- 16:33Speaker 1: would probably like use the chance to like walk over
- 16:36Speaker 1: and get a drink. Okay, so I haven't. I'm having
- 16:39Speaker 1: the inverse reaction because the reason I loved it so
- 16:43Speaker 1: much is because it wasn't drag Race lip singing. It
- 16:48Speaker 1: was not I am a lip sync assassin. It was
- 16:50Speaker 1: not like I am lip syncing for my life right now.
- 16:54Speaker 1: It was I am at a bar performing for people
- 16:57Speaker 1: that I love, and I'm serving you face And the
- 17:01Speaker 1: only way you're going to enjoy this performance is if
- 17:03Speaker 1: you look me dead in the eyes. And I feel
- 17:06Speaker 1: like because she had so much performance in her eyes,
- 17:09Speaker 1: and she did very minimal but very effective things with
- 17:12Speaker 1: her body that we're surprising and like unexpected. I was
- 17:16Speaker 1: just like, I was like, that is such a sweet
- 17:18Speaker 1: spot for me. And I felt like I was at
- 17:20Speaker 1: the Rosmann or something watching like one of my girls
- 17:23Speaker 1: performance so straight but like with total precision. And I
- 17:28Speaker 1: feel like the thing that precision is a very good
- 17:32Speaker 1: word to use. Yeah, And I think the other thing
- 17:35Speaker 1: is like when it comes to like drag grace lip
- 17:37Speaker 1: snks in general, nine times out of ten, especially Jasmine Kennedy,
- 17:42Speaker 1: you are not selling in the face. Jasmine Kennedy said,
- 17:48Speaker 1: I can't stand her. I really felt for her super hard,
- 17:52Speaker 1: but like she I've just never really enjoyed any of
- 17:55Speaker 1: her lip syncs. I don't think she has control of
- 17:58Speaker 1: her body. It's so chaos. Dick. Yeah, I think she'll
- 18:01Speaker 1: be better in like five years maybe, but yeah, I agree,
- 18:05Speaker 1: it's not right. But the Jasmine Kennedy problem is a
- 18:08Speaker 1: problem that a lot of these girls have. Is like
- 18:10Speaker 1: they have the kicks and the flips and the splits
- 18:12Speaker 1: and the stunts and whatever, but if you're not selling
- 18:15Speaker 1: it in the eyes, your performance is like empty. And
- 18:19Speaker 1: I think that a lot of these girls lose it
- 18:21Speaker 1: in the eyes, which is like which sucks because they're
- 18:23Speaker 1: probably it's a really nerve wracking place to perform, like
- 18:26Speaker 1: it's really hard to stay focused. But like Willow went
- 18:29Speaker 1: into the zone and it's so hard to really sell
- 18:32Speaker 1: it in the eyes. And I think that that is
- 18:34Speaker 1: like what she accomplished, and it's one of my favorite
- 18:36Speaker 1: performances I've ever seen on Drive right. I do think
- 18:38Speaker 1: she used the medium the best, Like she knew that
- 18:42Speaker 1: she was on television and that if she did a
- 18:46Speaker 1: very precise, captivating performance it would it would read really well,
- 18:51Speaker 1: not only in the room but on camera. I just
- 18:54Speaker 1: think she's very smart and she will win. I don't.
- 19:11Speaker 1: But today we are here to discuss none other than
- 19:14Speaker 1: America's next top the the reality competition show. I think
- 19:19Speaker 1: like that that started it all in a way. She
- 19:23Speaker 1: was that girl, America's next to Idol was that girl.
- 19:25Speaker 1: I mean she was a year after American Idol, which
- 19:27Speaker 1: you know, fine, but a t M that girl, and
- 19:32Speaker 1: it created this like it created this wave of competition
- 19:36Speaker 1: shows like it, like Project Running with a year after
- 19:38Speaker 1: Drag Race was a few years after, Like so many
- 19:41Speaker 1: shows used a t M as the template. I don't
- 19:45Speaker 1: give Tyra Banks for credit en, yes, y'all to, but
- 19:52Speaker 1: that's why I'm here. I was because Tyra Banks deserves Okay,
- 19:56Speaker 1: she is all of these kids it's parents, you know
- 20:00Speaker 1: that are all these ugly shows that are on TV
- 20:02Speaker 1: right now? She is mother, Well she is. Let's give
- 20:08Speaker 1: some context. So I watched Top Model as it was airing. Fran,
- 20:13Speaker 1: you had never seen it until I kind of bullied
- 20:16Speaker 1: you into using my um Hulu login because you were
- 20:20Speaker 1: using the Hulu that had ads. Man, I said, I
- 20:23Speaker 1: can't deal with this anymore. That is literally well, I
- 20:28Speaker 1: used my friends Hulu account and he pays to not
- 20:30Speaker 1: have ads, so I like to share the wealth, of course,
- 20:34Speaker 1: but like I would never have a Hulu account with
- 20:36Speaker 1: ads also, and also Rose would never give me a
- 20:39Speaker 1: Hulu account out of the kindness of her heart. It
- 20:41Speaker 1: was weird France apartment. I was like, I can't deal
- 20:45Speaker 1: with that here, and it has kind of messed up
- 20:51Speaker 1: my algorithm a little bit because because I will go
- 20:54Speaker 1: to watch something and like it's like you already watched
- 20:57Speaker 1: this week's Abbott's element Abbott Elementary and like, well, no,
- 21:00Speaker 1: Fran watched it. Should I be logging in his mommy,
- 21:03Speaker 1: which is the other profile. No, that's Ryan's actual mom
- 21:06Speaker 1: Ryan mom. No, it's Ryan's account. That's what I'm telling you. Okay,
- 21:11Speaker 1: well I'm sorry, Ryan, I'm using your account. So Fran
- 21:15Speaker 1: had never seen Top Model, has only recently delved in
- 21:18Speaker 1: what have you been watching since the beginning watching since
- 21:22Speaker 1: the beginning season one? Adrian Curry Mary who was married
- 21:27Speaker 1: to um but of the Brady Bunch. She was I
- 21:31Speaker 1: forgot about one of the original I actually was thinking
- 21:33Speaker 1: about this recently because, um, do you listen to who
- 21:37Speaker 1: Weekly or do you know the podcast? So they were
- 21:41Speaker 1: one of their callin shows. Someone asked about her and
- 21:44Speaker 1: if she was still married to the Brady Bunch guys.
- 21:46Speaker 1: She's not. She lives on a farm with with the
- 21:50Speaker 1: guy who does the voice for like every movie trailer,
- 21:54Speaker 1: Like he's like he's the guy who's like in a
- 21:57Speaker 1: world where you know he like does So she's married
- 22:00Speaker 1: to him and and the Brady Bunch guy makes furniture.
- 22:04Speaker 1: He makes Oh, he makes the patio furniture that was
- 22:07Speaker 1: used in the Megan Marco Oprah interview. That is so specific. Yeah,
- 22:12Speaker 1: if you have more details on this, please go listen
- 22:14Speaker 1: to Who Weekly. But anyway, Adrian Curry, Yes, the first season,
- 22:18Speaker 1: I was there from the beginning. I've seen it. I've
- 22:21Speaker 1: seen twenty two out of the twenty four cycles. There
- 22:25Speaker 1: were a couple of years where I had to dig
- 22:26Speaker 1: out that is a lot of viewing it is, and
- 22:30Speaker 1: then I rewatched it all during the pandemic watch seasons
- 22:34Speaker 1: or do you stop at a certain I started from
- 22:36Speaker 1: the beginning and went to the end, to the end,
- 22:38Speaker 1: I have to admit, Okay, even though I watched from
- 22:42Speaker 1: the beginning, I've only seen probably the first eight seasons,
- 22:47Speaker 1: and then I did watch the reboot seasons with Rita
- 22:51Speaker 1: or of course Red Alert. I mean I did as well,
- 22:55Speaker 1: but but I missed I missed the like from eight on,
- 23:00Speaker 1: and so I missed all the ones with Andre Leon Tally.
- 23:03Speaker 1: I missed the ones where they've brought in male models
- 23:07Speaker 1: less iconic, but they gave us now DeMarco, so shout
- 23:11Speaker 1: out to care about um. I just for the virgins
- 23:14Speaker 1: wrapping the Virgins out here. I had maybe seen one
- 23:16Speaker 1: or two episodes, like as a kid, my mom and
- 23:19Speaker 1: sister used to watch it, but like preparing for this episode,
- 23:23Speaker 1: I've watched the first six seasons, and then to Andre
- 23:28Speaker 1: Leon Tally seasons and then Jade's season as well. Okay,
- 23:32Speaker 1: oh that's a great that's a great overview. I really
- 23:35Speaker 1: wanted to watch isis is season in time, but then
- 23:37Speaker 1: I was like, I actually don't want to watch her
- 23:39Speaker 1: endure a bunch of transper I recently revisited it for
- 23:43Speaker 1: a book I'm writing, and it's well, I mean, I
- 23:47Speaker 1: think season one is a great place to start or
- 23:49Speaker 1: also just to talk broadly about very wacky things that
- 23:52Speaker 1: come from them. Well maybe maybe the early season. I don't.
- 23:57Speaker 1: I don't remember a lot of season one. Season two
- 23:59Speaker 1: is my favorite season. Iguana. You know, they can't call
- 24:05Speaker 1: her iguana the whole time. So Shandy who famously cheating
- 24:08Speaker 1: on her boyfriend, you had sex, Oh my god, sex
- 24:13Speaker 1: the little bitch ass boyfriend on the phone. That was
- 24:17Speaker 1: an amazing season. And then you Wanna you wanna the
- 24:19Speaker 1: helmet and the helmet photos so good, Oh my god.
- 24:24Speaker 1: One of my favorite things about the early seasons, which
- 24:26Speaker 1: still actually happens and throughout um, is that the like
- 24:30Speaker 1: Christian and or conservative girls that are always cast on
- 24:34Speaker 1: this every every cycle has like like one or two
- 24:37Speaker 1: or three of these Christian girls and they immediately become
- 24:40Speaker 1: the villains of the show. Do you remember Robin Um
- 24:44Speaker 1: Robin was the black one cycle one, cycle one when
- 24:47Speaker 1: she was like super religious, super and she was also
- 24:50Speaker 1: the plus size and she was the plus and I
- 24:52Speaker 1: say plus size and plus she was a size ten,
- 24:55Speaker 1: notably sex but like that she was like I remember
- 25:00Speaker 1: her being there was wasn't there like drama in a
- 25:03Speaker 1: challenge where like they had to pose nude or in
- 25:05Speaker 1: like lingerie and she didn't want to do it because
- 25:07Speaker 1: of her Christian values. But then behind the scene she
- 25:09Speaker 1: had like Mr J or whatever for her. I remember
- 25:16Speaker 1: Ja Manuel being like listen here, like this is you
- 25:19Speaker 1: are contradicting yourself. But I also loved that, like the
- 25:24Speaker 1: one who there was a girl who almost won that
- 25:27Speaker 1: season who had the whole time is complaining about how
- 25:29Speaker 1: she thought the show was trivial and she thought modeling
- 25:31Speaker 1: was stupid whatever, but she was ostracized immediately immediately for
- 25:35Speaker 1: being an atheist, which I thought was so bad as
- 25:39Speaker 1: but like they literally Robin did like a prayer circle
- 25:42Speaker 1: from this girl and on television and then after I think, um,
- 25:48Speaker 1: I feel like the whole tea with like Robin was
- 25:51Speaker 1: that she wouldn't pose nude and that was like part
- 25:54Speaker 1: of elimination. And I remember Janne Stickinson being like, well,
- 25:57Speaker 1: if you don't want to pose nude, you can go
- 25:58Speaker 1: work at a factory or bakery or ben alight. Well
- 26:01Speaker 1: that's another thing with the first couple of seasons that
- 26:03Speaker 1: Jannas Dickinson was one of the judges, and she was
- 26:07Speaker 1: I mean, just the amount of times that she said
- 26:09Speaker 1: the word tranny, like, oh, I mean, that was one
- 26:14Speaker 1: of their favorite words, like tranny, she mail like, and
- 26:20Speaker 1: jan was also saying egregiously anti black things, like they're
- 26:24Speaker 1: definitely egregiously the entire time. She's literally and like a
- 26:28Speaker 1: neo Nazi on the entire season. She's all right, she
- 26:33Speaker 1: was at the capital on Oh my God, I literally though,
- 26:39Speaker 1: I mean, I just like I was, so there was
- 26:42Speaker 1: nothing redeemable about na. It was entertaining though at the time.
- 26:49Speaker 1: It was so entertained at the time. This woman is wild,
- 26:53Speaker 1: but like I can't look away. I was, I felt
- 26:57Speaker 1: I kind of I was bummed that I didn't watch
- 26:59Speaker 1: it live because there's so many components of it that
- 27:01Speaker 1: I would have found really entertaining. To be like a
- 27:04Speaker 1: little queer kid like um getting access to this like
- 27:09Speaker 1: glamorous fashion world, yes Hunt yes, like A and t M.
- 27:14Speaker 1: I always say introduced me to my first to possibility
- 27:18Speaker 1: models Miss j Alexander and Andre Leon Tally. It was
- 27:22Speaker 1: through this show. This show is icoonic. Okay, people don't
- 27:25Speaker 1: talk about it and left I know we were talking.
- 27:27Speaker 1: It also is the root for like half of the
- 27:30Speaker 1: memes on the internet. Actually literally so many mope but
- 27:35Speaker 1: make it fashion. But there's also um I think it's
- 27:39Speaker 1: and then the like the like woke versions of that
- 27:41Speaker 1: like feminism but make an intersectional. It was like, okay, girl,
- 27:45Speaker 1: there's in season fourteen there there's a contestant named Alaysia
- 27:50Speaker 1: and there's a moment where she gets saved and you
- 27:53Speaker 1: don't think she was going to get saved and she's
- 27:54Speaker 1: like kind of crying and rooting her fists like this,
- 27:58Speaker 1: and I was in time. I was like, that is
- 28:01Speaker 1: a meme that like it had no like things that
- 28:04Speaker 1: you have no idea where the girl fainting. Okay, you'll
- 28:09Speaker 1: have to be more specific because many you know the
- 28:12Speaker 1: girls who like who fainted them during judge. This would
- 28:15Speaker 1: have been her eyes roll back. She had like a
- 28:18Speaker 1: rare like you know, it's so funny. A lot exceptions
- 28:22Speaker 1: for because with her, she was dismissed and she came
- 28:24Speaker 1: back and they were like, oh, you're you're good. Don't
- 28:27Speaker 1: worry about it. You have to worry about this challenge.
- 28:28Speaker 1: But then some girls have literal medical emergencies like Danielle,
- 28:32Speaker 1: like just qualified and like the doctors like, do not
- 28:36Speaker 1: leave the hospital. It's against medical advice to the hospital,
- 28:39Speaker 1: and she leaves to the photo's like listen, she won,
- 28:44Speaker 1: and she won that season entire and Tyre always reads them.
- 28:47Speaker 1: She's like, when I was a model, there's always one
- 28:51Speaker 1: of those. I slept in a room with twelve other girls, okay,
- 28:54Speaker 1: and they steal my stuff and they didn't like because
- 28:57Speaker 1: I was black, And she loves that, Okay. As a
- 29:01Speaker 1: Tyra her story, can you like set the scene for
- 29:04Speaker 1: us of where Tyra was in her career when Top
- 29:08Speaker 1: Model started. So Tyra had already become a major star,
- 29:13Speaker 1: like a major celebrity. She had already converted that kind
- 29:16Speaker 1: of model energy, particularly through Victoria's secret stuff, because allowed
- 29:23Speaker 1: her to show her personality and all of that. Victoria
- 29:26Speaker 1: was the culture. It was the culture at was this
- 29:28Speaker 1: post kyote Ugly. This, Oh my god, I forgot that
- 29:32Speaker 1: she was. I'm going to look at it. I please
- 29:34Speaker 1: look it up because kyote Ugly is two thousand when
- 29:38Speaker 1: the top Model start Top Model started in two thousand three.
- 29:41Speaker 1: If I'm not wow, oh my god, wow post coyote Ugly,
- 29:45Speaker 1: which iconic? I mean? Yes, She's my favorite thing, my
- 29:49Speaker 1: favorite Thanksgiving movie. Okay, I don't know why, but I
- 29:53Speaker 1: consider it a Thanksgiving movie. I see that, Yeah, I
- 29:56Speaker 1: see that. It gives November. Ye. Okay. So Tyra's already
- 30:02Speaker 1: an anointed celeb. She's already an annointed celeb, and then
- 30:05Speaker 1: she also has this just like personality that folks have
- 30:08Speaker 1: loved and seen in interviews or whatnot, right, and that
- 30:12Speaker 1: is what, you know, helped her get this show again.
- 30:15Speaker 1: This was that like that beginning era of like good
- 30:19Speaker 1: reality TV, right, the Simple Life American idol. Like I mentioned,
- 30:24Speaker 1: we should do a Simple Life episode. I've never seen, really, girl,
- 30:29Speaker 1: you haven't seen a lot over there for an end.
- 30:31Speaker 1: It's the conceit of the show. Why we do the podcast.
- 30:34Speaker 1: It was like a virgin the show where yesterday's pop
- 30:37Speaker 1: calls today's cake. You know um Jay Manuel famously like
- 30:41Speaker 1: the story he tells is that Tyra called him because
- 30:44Speaker 1: at the time he was her makeup artist. Tyra calls
- 30:47Speaker 1: him at like two o'clock in the morning, like, man,
- 30:50Speaker 1: I feel like a lot of people get as mannequin
- 30:55Speaker 1: like talking and like he thought something was wrong, like
- 30:57Speaker 1: there was an emergency and like he was something there
- 30:59Speaker 1: was of emergency. And Tyra literally like rattled off the
- 31:03Speaker 1: entire concept for the show and she was like I
- 31:05Speaker 1: have this idea for the show and like you can
- 31:07Speaker 1: do the makeup and like blah blah blah, and she
- 31:08Speaker 1: like spewed out the whole kind of show and like
- 31:11Speaker 1: we forget that she created the show, like it's it's
- 31:15Speaker 1: not like a nowadays, we have a lot of celebrities
- 31:18Speaker 1: that are executive producers on things, which really only means
- 31:21Speaker 1: that you collect a lot of coin for like you know,
- 31:24Speaker 1: a kind of um you know, it's like a vanity title.
- 31:28Speaker 1: But like Tyra was so I feel heavily involved. She
- 31:34Speaker 1: made that, she made the pitch that she was super involved.
- 31:37Speaker 1: And you can also tell, like even now as a
- 31:39Speaker 1: lot of folks have been like revisiting the series right
- 31:42Speaker 1: and calling her out for some of the foolishness. Miss
- 31:46Speaker 1: Jay has done interviews, had had a whole Instagram series
- 31:50Speaker 1: of interviews spilling the realty of like how these stuff
- 31:54Speaker 1: came together, and he was saying the same thing. He
- 31:56Speaker 1: was like Tyra Banks was like super involved, but he
- 31:59Speaker 1: was like, I also super involved, Like we created these
- 32:02Speaker 1: ideas out of our head, but he was like, they're
- 32:04Speaker 1: also a reflection of that. The industry at that time
- 32:09Speaker 1: was doing racist ship. Do you remember any like specific
- 32:12Speaker 1: t that was like that like stuck out to you,
- 32:16Speaker 1: either from that series or otherwise from the JS. You know,
- 32:19Speaker 1: I think what it was is a lot of it
- 32:21Speaker 1: was just drama around you know, different judges, personalities, different
- 32:27Speaker 1: off camera issues. I don't know if y'all remember the
- 32:29Speaker 1: season with was it Naima? I think it was her season.
- 32:33Speaker 1: They were in somewhere in Africa, um and they had
- 32:38Speaker 1: this challenge where they had these male models who were
- 32:41Speaker 1: like around them and like, you know, she was felt
- 32:44Speaker 1: made to feel uncomfortable or whatever. I think it was Kenya.
- 32:47Speaker 1: But the key it was the girl that they dressed
- 32:50Speaker 1: up as an OWLD friend because she had gained right
- 32:52Speaker 1: she also became the plus size whatever. Yeah, Yeah, they
- 32:55Speaker 1: were like your plus size actually got a little stomach
- 32:58Speaker 1: plus anyway, but they were talking. He was talking about
- 33:03Speaker 1: how they were like trying to handle it and the
- 33:06Speaker 1: response because again he started doing this in the pandemic
- 33:09Speaker 1: when people had all these questions, but like, how could
- 33:11Speaker 1: you all do that in a post me to world.
- 33:14Speaker 1: They're like, oh my god, you all recorded that and
- 33:16Speaker 1: you didn't say nothing. He's like, he's like, listen, you
- 33:19Speaker 1: know sometimes there are I mean, I didn't like his answer,
- 33:25Speaker 1: that's my disclaimer, okay, but he was just like, listen,
- 33:28Speaker 1: things happen that you all don't see. Um, and when
- 33:33Speaker 1: it comes down to it, we've got to get the shot. Yes,
- 33:36Speaker 1: I mean he I have some quotes. Um, you know.
- 33:41Speaker 1: Miss Ja noted Tyra also had bosses, but Jay Manuel said, um,
- 33:49Speaker 1: people are throwing her under the bus. But I think
- 33:51Speaker 1: at the same time, I can't defend her. I can't
- 33:53Speaker 1: get in her head about what she meant about a
- 33:55Speaker 1: lot of controversial things that happened. I'm just going to
- 33:58Speaker 1: stipulate this. Everyone keeps asking who allowed that, um, and
- 34:02Speaker 1: the Jays stood by and this and that. Let's be real.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Almost Tyra has as she has always said in the
- 34:08Speaker 1: press it was her show period, she was the host.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Heerd anything that happened on the show was sanctioned by
- 34:15Speaker 1: or was creative that Tyra put forward period. That is
- 34:18Speaker 1: so t it's with something like that, it's I mean,
- 34:22Speaker 1: there are a lot of I mean, there are a
- 34:24Speaker 1: lot of things handled in the show that are just
- 34:26Speaker 1: abhorrent and egregious. And like the multiple challenges where they
- 34:30Speaker 1: had the models be different races. Yeah, almost wants the
- 34:35Speaker 1: cycle like someone is meant to like it's the blackface challenge.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Literally that in the second Andre Leon Tally season they
- 34:43Speaker 1: do it was like Ghosties. They do a whole photoshoot
- 34:46Speaker 1: around crumping actually, and then Twiggies all I've never heard
- 34:54Speaker 1: of crumping before, but I don't know if they sees
- 34:56Speaker 1: a clump, but it looks delightful, like it's like so
- 35:01Speaker 1: so stupid. Listen, they were taking the culture and I
- 35:05Speaker 1: know that's idea. Of course it was, of course it
- 35:09Speaker 1: was um but yeah, I I don't know. I think
- 35:13Speaker 1: that when I look back on it now, especially with
- 35:16Speaker 1: something like that moment where like ken you was kind
- 35:18Speaker 1: of being grabbed in a way that was like so
- 35:20Speaker 1: not okay, Like it was some of these issues are
- 35:25Speaker 1: handled very badly, but not in the worst way, you know,
- 35:29Speaker 1: some of like some of the judges tried to stick
- 35:32Speaker 1: up for her, but they ultimately were like, but you
- 35:36Speaker 1: just got to deal with that, which is like not
- 35:38Speaker 1: how we would treat it today. But I think that's
- 35:40Speaker 1: a lot there's a lot of back and forth around
- 35:42Speaker 1: like how we hold things accountable, especially when they're from
- 35:45Speaker 1: like twenty years ago, and that was unfortunately the culture
- 35:48Speaker 1: of the time, right, Like all of the models of
- 35:51Speaker 1: the heyday have these stories about like sexual harassment or
- 35:54Speaker 1: assault that they've had to deal with just as a
- 35:57Speaker 1: matter of being in the industry. So it makes since
- 36:00Speaker 1: that someone like a Tyra Banks or whoever else is
- 36:02Speaker 1: like behind the scenes on this show with the women
- 36:05Speaker 1: are like, girl, just suck it up like this, like
- 36:07Speaker 1: you're about to get this contract, like you know, it
- 36:11Speaker 1: was all on camera, so it went bad bad, you
- 36:14Speaker 1: know how motherfucker's like used to talk right, Like I
- 36:16Speaker 1: remember there was a I think in season two there
- 36:19Speaker 1: was this girl who I mean, so many of the
- 36:20Speaker 1: girls had eating disorders, which it's like another it's just
- 36:23Speaker 1: another kind of like class of women that like are
- 36:26Speaker 1: so set up to fail, like for a show like this,
- 36:29Speaker 1: but like there's this girl who was like, I think
- 36:30Speaker 1: she actually ended up winning the second cycle you wanna
- 36:38Speaker 1: during her ghost sees like which everyone's so mean and
- 36:41Speaker 1: at these ghosties, but one of the people was like,
- 36:44Speaker 1: one of the people is like, yo, w on it,
- 36:45Speaker 1: like you really need to work on your like your body,
- 36:48Speaker 1: you need to work in your tone. And she like
- 36:50Speaker 1: very quietly, was like, but I'm assised to like literally
- 36:54Speaker 1: like and no one liked and when it campt saddest
- 36:56Speaker 1: thing I had ever heard, and it and it like
- 36:58Speaker 1: makes it worse than GM's Dickinson is calling literally calling
- 37:01Speaker 1: them fatty. Literally literally literally every single one, even the
- 37:06Speaker 1: smallest folks. The body fascism never stopped from her. I
- 37:11Speaker 1: I literally there were so few redeeming Oh my god,
- 37:14Speaker 1: I just hate Jannas Dickinson. She made great TV the
- 37:16Speaker 1: right Let's say that every time she was on my TV,
- 37:20Speaker 1: I was watching she had her own reality show. She
- 37:23Speaker 1: did it was like the Janice Dickinson modeling agents on
- 37:27Speaker 1: like oxygen because there were there are a lot of
- 37:30Speaker 1: people have tried to replicate the Formula Top model. There
- 37:35Speaker 1: was a Bravo modeling show for like a one season. Um,
- 37:41Speaker 1: I guess janesis show. What other modeling reality shows out there?
- 37:45Speaker 1: I mean the very of the face, which I love.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Girl Campbells another person who's just great. These older models,
- 37:57Speaker 1: they're just great TV. They know what they're doing. Naomi
- 37:59Speaker 1: campbell Is. I mean, the show is not as good
- 38:01Speaker 1: as America's Next a Model, but Naomi as a TV
- 38:04Speaker 1: personality is on par with Tira pointblank period in a
- 38:08Speaker 1: completely different way, way, more erratic way. Angry are like
- 38:12Speaker 1: just nonsert, like the rate, like these women are like
- 38:15Speaker 1: on sets and she's screaming, Well, this is the woman
- 38:19Speaker 1: who famously threw her phone at her assistant. So oh,
- 38:22Speaker 1: I'm sure she has thrown many more phones off the record,
- 38:26Speaker 1: probably thrown a lot of things. Now she's just got
- 38:29Speaker 1: it in the contract that you just expected actually though, Um,
- 38:33Speaker 1: but yeah, I mean Janice. Uh. The one moment that
- 38:38Speaker 1: did make me I have a really hard time with Jannis.
- 38:41Speaker 1: I was like, actually emotionally affected watching her just be
- 38:44Speaker 1: so horrible. Um. But one of the moments that did
- 38:46Speaker 1: stick out to me was during Jade's season. Um, there's
- 38:50Speaker 1: a contest named Gina who is like kind of struggling.
- 38:52Speaker 1: She was the only Asian model, like, and she was
- 38:55Speaker 1: being bullied by Jade and Jay we have to talk about.
- 39:01Speaker 1: But like Janice, who had already been ousted from the
- 39:03Speaker 1: show because her entire basically got into a fight about
- 39:07Speaker 1: plus size models. From what I understand, I think the
- 39:09Speaker 1: t is that like Jane's just point blank period didn't
- 39:12Speaker 1: want plus size models on the show, and I was like,
- 39:14Speaker 1: it's important to me or whatever, among other agreements, and
- 39:16Speaker 1: then she was fired from the show. She came back
- 39:18Speaker 1: for occasional cameos and she took these girls out for
- 39:21Speaker 1: dinner and like no, like I think probably fed by
- 39:25Speaker 1: the producers knowing that they like Jade and this girl
- 39:28Speaker 1: Gina were like fighting. Was like Gina, like, what's going on?
- 39:31Speaker 1: Telling me? And Gina was like I don't want to.
- 39:33Speaker 1: I don't want to tell you what She was like
- 39:34Speaker 1: very resistant, and Janice was like, no, you have to
- 39:37Speaker 1: fucking tell like literally bullied her into telling her. And
- 39:40Speaker 1: then Gina was like, okay, well it's Jade, Like she
- 39:43Speaker 1: is like really mean to me, and Janice is like,
- 39:46Speaker 1: we never rat out our sisters, and she literally says
- 39:50Speaker 1: to Gina, says to this child she says, you're dead
- 39:53Speaker 1: to me, bitch buzz and I was like, such such good.
- 39:58Speaker 1: It's so funny because these such a good. A lot
- 40:00Speaker 1: of these girls are like like they even if they're
- 40:04Speaker 1: like twenty one, they feel like they're fifteen. Like they
- 40:07Speaker 1: are all so yeah, they are also and for and
- 40:11Speaker 1: these judges treat them like they're five. They want to
- 40:14Speaker 1: shake them up. They're like, listen, you wanted this, you
- 40:17Speaker 1: want to be in this business. I'm going to treat
- 40:19Speaker 1: you like But you know, some of the girls came
- 40:22Speaker 1: in with very strong personalities, like my absolute favorite contestant
- 40:26Speaker 1: of all time, ferrand with the walk and with the tips,
- 40:34Speaker 1: which I do want to was was a contestant from
- 40:38Speaker 1: cycle six, and she came in with Ferranda's tips for
- 40:42Speaker 1: successful interaction, which she posted around the house. Here just here,
- 40:47Speaker 1: just a few of them. Tips for successful interaction. Number one,
- 40:52Speaker 1: I will treat you in a way that is identical
- 40:54Speaker 1: to or worse than the way you treat me reciprocity.
- 40:59Speaker 1: Number two, I am the best person to discuss me
- 41:04Speaker 1: with Queen. Three. If you need anything other than emergency items,
- 41:10Speaker 1: please do not ask me. That's very you, honestly. Number
- 41:17Speaker 1: four stay out of my personal business unless I invite
- 41:20Speaker 1: you in Oh my God. They went to Thailand for
- 41:24Speaker 1: this season, and one of my favorite Frondo moments again
- 41:28Speaker 1: making these girls do things that are not in their
- 41:31Speaker 1: uncultural wheelhouse. They all had to do traditional Thai dance,
- 41:35Speaker 1: and like it was all about like mimicking very precise
- 41:39Speaker 1: movements and all like there were four girls left, I think,
- 41:42Speaker 1: and all three of the girls like try to do
- 41:44Speaker 1: this very precise tight ends and Franda gets up there
- 41:48Speaker 1: and abandons all of the Korea. It's in front of
- 41:51Speaker 1: a live audience and front to get the loudest applause
- 41:58Speaker 1: traditional time. It was wild, but it was super ientertated
- 42:15Speaker 1: with the resurgence of the Top Model in the pandemic,
- 42:18Speaker 1: they've been doing these zoom interviews with folks and talking.
- 42:22Speaker 1: I've seen some of the girls on TikTok's I forget
- 42:29Speaker 1: what her name was, but she won one of the
- 42:31Speaker 1: All Star seasons and she was talking about how they
- 42:34Speaker 1: like gossl at her, and I mean, I think there's
- 42:39Speaker 1: I think there's a lot of trauma around Top Model
- 42:42Speaker 1: for everyone of them. Yeah. Danny Danielle, who was the
- 42:45Speaker 1: season they went to Thailand, she did this whole interview
- 42:49Speaker 1: because folks were upset that Tyra and the judges made
- 42:53Speaker 1: her closer gap all right, right and had surgery. Um,
- 42:57Speaker 1: And so she did this whole Instagram live thing like
- 43:01Speaker 1: clearing the air and like being great, super grateful for
- 43:04Speaker 1: it or whatever she is that that's what she said. Yeah,
- 43:07Speaker 1: she was like, I was super grateful for it. She
- 43:09Speaker 1: was like, could I have had a career with my
- 43:11Speaker 1: big gap that big? She's like maybe, but like she's like,
- 43:15Speaker 1: life is really good for me right now. And I
- 43:17Speaker 1: closed my I closed my gap a little, and I
- 43:21Speaker 1: won the competition. She did win, and she was so incredible.
- 43:25Speaker 1: But even after she closed her gap, they were like,
- 43:27Speaker 1: well your accent, honey, and they were like dragging her
- 43:30Speaker 1: for her app and it's like, but yeah, um, oh god,
- 43:35Speaker 1: I feel like um. Also from these early seasons, so
- 43:38Speaker 1: I watch so Tiffany. Of course we have to get
- 43:40Speaker 1: to Tiffany. Tiffany was in Triumphs for season three and
- 43:45Speaker 1: then made it to the cycle four or whatever, which
- 43:48Speaker 1: I didn't realize, but like watching the third and then
- 43:51Speaker 1: the fourth cycles like in succession and knowing the legacy
- 43:55Speaker 1: of Tiffany, it felt like the hero's journey. It was
- 43:59Speaker 1: like Joseph camp Bowl level like epic of like, what
- 44:03Speaker 1: when was this going to happen to Tiffany and under
- 44:06Speaker 1: what circumstances? Because I actually didn't know the context, and
- 44:11Speaker 1: it's crazy, what like the reason that for this to
- 44:15Speaker 1: be the thing that Tyra blew up about. I'm really
- 44:18Speaker 1: curious as to like what was going on behind the scenes,
- 44:21Speaker 1: because what Tyra was mad about was so was such
- 44:25Speaker 1: a non issue, which was that she felt that Tiffany
- 44:28Speaker 1: after being fired, after being like, you know, dismissed from
- 44:32Speaker 1: the show, was not sad enough. But they literally made
- 44:36Speaker 1: her go to They made her go to Anger Management
- 44:40Speaker 1: after cycle three because she got into a bar fight
- 44:43Speaker 1: with some literal racist do you remember this. They were
- 44:46Speaker 1: at Barney's Beanery and some racist woman like throw a
- 44:49Speaker 1: bottle at her, and because she tried to defend herself,
- 44:52Speaker 1: they were like, you have to go to Anger Management
- 44:53Speaker 1: or something like that. And so she comes back the
- 44:55Speaker 1: show and Tyra's like mad at her for not expressing emotions,
- 44:59Speaker 1: of which he's gone to like quote unquote treatment to
- 45:02Speaker 1: like contain her emotion. It was but it was great TV,
- 45:06Speaker 1: and I will say it was incredible, excellent TV. And
- 45:10Speaker 1: I also have just say also from that season, there's
- 45:12Speaker 1: a moment where Tiffany and Brandy they were like two
- 45:15Speaker 1: little friends. They were two friends that were like in
- 45:17Speaker 1: season four. And then there's another contestant that like comes
- 45:21Speaker 1: out as like by um in in the in the
- 45:26Speaker 1: in the during the season. Yeah, the weird one who
- 45:29Speaker 1: had the bacteria, the flesh eating bacteria. Oh my god,
- 45:36Speaker 1: the flesh eating and she was like a little was
- 45:39Speaker 1: going on on the show. And I just remember like
- 45:43Speaker 1: she basically was like one on one with another girl
- 45:46Speaker 1: in there in the private and the privacy quote unquote
- 45:48Speaker 1: of her bedroom, telling this girl like, I think the
- 45:51Speaker 1: reason I've been so crazy lately is like I have
- 45:53Speaker 1: a secret and I'm by. And then it pans over
- 45:57Speaker 1: to Tiffany and Brandy behind the door listening, and they
- 46:00Speaker 1: turned to each other and she says like to this girl,
- 46:03Speaker 1: like I'm by, and Tiffany turns to I'm the other girl.
- 46:06Speaker 1: She's like, oh my god, she's gay. And then they
- 46:11Speaker 1: walked into the room and they were like we love
- 46:13Speaker 1: you so much, like we support like it's this that
- 46:17Speaker 1: was so cute. It was so cute. My favorite part
- 46:21Speaker 1: of every season is obviously episode three the makeover. There
- 46:27Speaker 1: used to be a YouTube compilation that was just every
- 46:30Speaker 1: makeover on Top and I could definitely watch that. I
- 46:35Speaker 1: mean the tears, the tears, but like sometimes they were
- 46:40Speaker 1: justified because some of those makeovers were whack. Yes, yes,
- 46:45Speaker 1: but the majority of the tears were the girls who
- 46:48Speaker 1: had long hair, who felt like they would look like
- 46:50Speaker 1: a boy when they cut their hair off, when they
- 46:53Speaker 1: when they got the Mia Pharoh and Roseberry's baby special
- 46:57Speaker 1: every every seasvery season, and the like this is gonna
- 47:00Speaker 1: make you so edgy, this is gonna make you so
- 47:02Speaker 1: mod and like the girls just like it's always really
- 47:06Speaker 1: funny when someone gets a very dramatic makeover and then
- 47:08Speaker 1: gets sent home that episode. Now you have to leader
- 47:14Speaker 1: and let them people cut your hair. Almost every season
- 47:17Speaker 1: somebody they change somebody's hair this way and tire was like,
- 47:20Speaker 1: that's not what I asked for. You gotta go do
- 47:22Speaker 1: it again. Or there was a season where one of
- 47:25Speaker 1: the black girls got this like really painful we've put
- 47:28Speaker 1: in and the entire was like, that's not what I wanted.
- 47:33Speaker 1: So she had to go back and they had to
- 47:34Speaker 1: take it out and do it all over again, and
- 47:37Speaker 1: they're always having white people. Do these like black women's hair,
- 47:40Speaker 1: especially in the early season. Do you have any favorite
- 47:43Speaker 1: contestants and or like wacky moments from earlier seasons. Um,
- 47:48Speaker 1: My favorite contestant of all time is Eva the Diva
- 47:51Speaker 1: pigfurt Um that season three, she was amazing great television
- 47:57Speaker 1: three is a close second. But I love the drama, okay,
- 48:01Speaker 1: I love the girls. You know when somebody ate breeze
- 48:05Speaker 1: uh food, Oh my god, and she was so upset
- 48:09Speaker 1: about it. I was like, yes, that's what I like. Okay.
- 48:13Speaker 1: There was another there was another black girl who was queer. Um.
- 48:17Speaker 1: I forget which season, maybe season three, um, who just
- 48:21Speaker 1: like had an attitude the entire time. She was ball headed,
- 48:24Speaker 1: dark skin. I was like, yes, girl, just be a
- 48:26Speaker 1: bit why. She was the first lesbian on the show,
- 48:30Speaker 1: and I remember when this bye girl came through, she
- 48:32Speaker 1: was like, I just want to be the first lesbian
- 48:35Speaker 1: America's next to mine. I was like she was. There
- 48:37Speaker 1: was a lesbian cycle wything. Do you have any favorite challenges? Oh,
- 48:45Speaker 1: favorite challenges? I know what mine is. My favorite challenge
- 48:49Speaker 1: is season three with the jewelry beauty shot with the
- 48:53Speaker 1: hands um. And that's my favorite shoe of all because
- 49:00Speaker 1: the drama that Eva gave us that episode, because obviously
- 49:04Speaker 1: you gotta spider a girl. I want to face like
- 49:06Speaker 1: I get a girl. Um. But that was just so wonderful.
- 49:08Speaker 1: The photos for all of the girls were gorgeous. I
- 49:11Speaker 1: was like, this, this is this is modeling, frand this
- 49:14Speaker 1: is modeling. My favorite photo shoot was the Seven Deadly
- 49:18Speaker 1: Sins in cycle four where they were in the coffin
- 49:22Speaker 1: and they made the girl who's best friend best friend
- 49:26Speaker 1: had just died, get into the coffin. But she was
- 49:32Speaker 1: so good she didn't win the challenge, but that is
- 49:35Speaker 1: I feel like that that photo like recirculates like every
- 49:39Speaker 1: you know, every like nine months on Twitter. Um, it's
- 49:43Speaker 1: so good. But they also that was another one with
- 49:45Speaker 1: r Kenya where they made her be gluttony but all
- 49:51Speaker 1: the food and she was eating a burger and I
- 49:54Speaker 1: think and I think, um, someone said she looked like
- 49:56Speaker 1: a drag queen. Yeah, oh they were that was like
- 49:59Speaker 1: that was their favorite. Yeah, she's giving drag queen. But
- 50:03Speaker 1: sometimes it was a compliment and other times it wasn't. No,
- 50:06Speaker 1: it was always like you look like a man. It
- 50:08Speaker 1: was it was they said that about They kept calling
- 50:11Speaker 1: Jade to drag queen, but they would often say it
- 50:14Speaker 1: in like like as a positive thing, but that the
- 50:16Speaker 1: show really morphs and is inconsistent and how it like
- 50:20Speaker 1: compliments people because some women are rewarded for being skinny
- 50:24Speaker 1: and some women are punished for being skinny, and some
- 50:26Speaker 1: women are you know, it's it's like crazy, It didn't
- 50:29Speaker 1: make any sense, but it was great television keep saying, okay,
- 50:34Speaker 1: there is the season fourteen has obviously the challenge where
- 50:37Speaker 1: they have to they go to New Zealand and post
- 50:39Speaker 1: in front of the hobbiton this happened, So they go
- 50:44Speaker 1: to the Shire Girl. But that's the same season where
- 50:47Speaker 1: these girls walk down a runway where there's a huge
- 50:51Speaker 1: swinging pendulum in front of them that it's like as
- 50:54Speaker 1: if they're in the fucking Temple of Doom. The time
- 50:57Speaker 1: it perfectly so you don't get knocked over, and none
- 51:00Speaker 1: of the girls could do it, like none of the
- 51:02Speaker 1: girls had like rhythm, Oh my god. Um yeah. Also,
- 51:07Speaker 1: just any challenge where the girls have to read off
- 51:10Speaker 1: of a card or act like like Jade's cover Girl commercials.
- 51:19Speaker 1: If you have never seen Jade doing for Cover Girl commercial.
- 51:23Speaker 1: Please please go watch it. It is so iconic, as
- 51:27Speaker 1: is like almost everything Jade did the whole season. That
- 51:31Speaker 1: was this one of the acting challenges. It's my favorite
- 51:34Speaker 1: Tyra mal in existence is um. There's like a girl
- 51:38Speaker 1: in the confessional and she goes um. So we got
- 51:40Speaker 1: a Tyra mail today that said prepare to die. Like
- 51:45Speaker 1: that was it. But they were going to an acting
- 51:48Speaker 1: challenge where they had to pretend to die or something
- 51:50Speaker 1: with a really famous actor. I can't remember his name,
- 51:55Speaker 1: he can't have he can't he he was so he
- 51:58Speaker 1: was so famous Tyram. It was always like a black
- 52:02Speaker 1: act like it was Ko or like that's Hey Digs
- 52:05Speaker 1: or like it was it was Diggs or shamar More.
- 52:08Speaker 1: It was always that type of black actor that she
- 52:11Speaker 1: would bring to be there, you know, scenemate for those
- 52:14Speaker 1: types of chance. I'm always I'm very interested in like
- 52:18Speaker 1: who tires friends are, because like and like who who
- 52:22Speaker 1: she inducts into the show, because to put someone like
- 52:24Speaker 1: miss j in this show in two thousand three is radical,
- 52:29Speaker 1: Like and I don't even I don't even say that
- 52:31Speaker 1: with any facetiousness. And it's like, I think, because no one,
- 52:34Speaker 1: how have people hadn't really heard of Miss J outside
- 52:37Speaker 1: of the industry. Yeah, outside of the industry, and here
- 52:41Speaker 1: like Miss J is like like in his own clothes,
- 52:44Speaker 1: you know, Like and I thought that that was like
- 52:46Speaker 1: so amazing because she knew that he was the best
- 52:49Speaker 1: at what he did, and he was he really was
- 52:52Speaker 1: still is. Some would say, so like I love Miss J.
- 52:55Speaker 1: You know, I could talk about that one long time. Yeah,
- 52:57Speaker 1: talk talk to us about Miss J. Jason meant amazing,
- 53:01Speaker 1: you know, because again it was through top model that
- 53:03Speaker 1: I saw this like black man who was like super effeminate,
- 53:07Speaker 1: and I was like, oh, there's something there that's like
- 53:09Speaker 1: resonating with me and my experience. Um and so, and
- 53:13Speaker 1: the fact that ms J was just like themselves, like
- 53:17Speaker 1: it was one of one. You could tell no one
- 53:18Speaker 1: else had that personality. They were like fully in themselves
- 53:23Speaker 1: and like knew their power and they knew that when
- 53:26Speaker 1: they walked in the room, you were paying attention, right,
- 53:29Speaker 1: and like that's what I try to embody today, right,
- 53:32Speaker 1: um and so, like Miss J was everything. And to
- 53:35Speaker 1: see them having already been like super successful in the
- 53:39Speaker 1: industry as some as a model themselves, and then as
- 53:43Speaker 1: somebody who was teaching, Naomi teaching, Tira teaching, camor Ley Simmons,
- 53:48Speaker 1: UM and all of the girls of the time. Transition
- 53:52Speaker 1: that into this personality media personality moment that he currently has. Amazing.
- 53:58Speaker 1: It's so well deserved, deserved, beyond for sure. Did ms
- 54:03Speaker 1: stay till the very end? Um, No, miss j Um.
- 54:09Speaker 1: I don't want to say they had a falling out,
- 54:12Speaker 1: but they weren't asked back. You know, when they were
- 54:15Speaker 1: doing the revamping, Um, this is around the red or
- 54:19Speaker 1: us um time but like short for it, Um, when
- 54:22Speaker 1: they were just like trying to cycle in new talent.
- 54:26Speaker 1: They were doing stupid stuff like this was the British invasion,
- 54:30Speaker 1: this was the petite cycle, this was the it was.
- 54:35Speaker 1: It was like everybody was sure, everyone was everyone was
- 54:39Speaker 1: Christian China, like it was a thing. Um. Like this
- 54:44Speaker 1: is before they started doing guys um on the show, UM,
- 54:48Speaker 1: which those seasons were interesting. There were three of them,
- 54:52Speaker 1: mightfully um three too many three too many um in
- 54:56Speaker 1: two guys one not Marco and Keith whatever his name. Um,
- 55:01Speaker 1: he's now got his you know penis print all over
- 55:03Speaker 1: the internet. Watch penis print for what you know. He's
- 55:07Speaker 1: just like one of those thirst trappers on Instagram like
- 55:09Speaker 1: the game. I thought you meant that he got his
- 55:13Speaker 1: like penis like molded and sold. He was, listen, you
- 55:19Speaker 1: got a diversify your income these days, Well let's get
- 55:21Speaker 1: the corporate card out and by what listen? Um. I
- 55:27Speaker 1: also had no idea that Raja did all the makeup.
- 55:31Speaker 1: Raja was the makeup artist for the first yes, many
- 55:35Speaker 1: seasons it was. Yeah, it was a long time, and
- 55:38Speaker 1: she was featured like very often, and I think ru
- 55:43Speaker 1: saw didn't Rue or someone from his camp see her
- 55:47Speaker 1: on ANTM and was like, you need to be on
- 55:49Speaker 1: Drag Race. I think, well, there was an episode where
- 55:52Speaker 1: she did drags Dira. Oh my god. Yeah, I forgot
- 55:57Speaker 1: about that, and she did look like Tyra. She did well.
- 56:00Speaker 1: They were best friends right at a point, um, which
- 56:03Speaker 1: is why Roger did Tyra for Drag Race for Snatch Game.
- 56:07Speaker 1: Oh and one, I believe I forgot about that. Wow.
- 56:13Speaker 1: Speaking of Tyra, did you watch the Tyra Banks Show,
- 56:17Speaker 1: the talk show? Yeah, I mean I saw like the
- 56:20Speaker 1: Beyonce interview that she did, which is you know, iconic
- 56:24Speaker 1: moment in in in television history. Um, so yeah, I
- 56:28Speaker 1: was watching it, but I wasn't like it wasn't like
- 56:30Speaker 1: appointment television. It was for me. I there was a
- 56:35Speaker 1: semester in college where I made my schedule around the
- 56:40Speaker 1: need to be at home and watch Tyra every day.
- 56:44Speaker 1: It was it was my roommate, and I would watch
- 56:47Speaker 1: it every afternoon. I was obsessed. What did you love
- 56:50Speaker 1: about it? Just that she was like so cuckoo and
- 56:54Speaker 1: like wacky and like kind of bad at being a
- 56:58Speaker 1: talk show host, but like that's what made her so
- 57:00Speaker 1: good at and like I loved the like the like
- 57:04Speaker 1: weird nothing episodes even more than the ones where she
- 57:08Speaker 1: had really good guests. Like one of my favorite episodes
- 57:11Speaker 1: is the one where she has the woman on who
- 57:12Speaker 1: married the Eiffel Tower. Oh my god, truly iconic. Also
- 57:18Speaker 1: her interview with Naomi where she's like, she's like, why
- 57:23Speaker 1: did you hate me so much? My name was like,
- 57:25Speaker 1: I don't even think of you. You know, I caught it.
- 57:29Speaker 1: There were great moments on that TV show. Remember the
- 57:32Speaker 1: one where she I think she had like was it
- 57:36Speaker 1: a cat scan or something on the show to prove
- 57:38Speaker 1: that her breasts were real. There was another one where
- 57:42Speaker 1: she was like, you know, kiss my fat ass, or
- 57:45Speaker 1: when she um was a homeless person for a dame
- 57:49Speaker 1: when she was a fat person, which inspired the challenge
- 57:54Speaker 1: that first introduced us to isis on America's Next Top Model? What? Yes,
- 58:00Speaker 1: that is the reason why, because iis initial introduction is
- 58:04Speaker 1: in the background on the previous season that she was
- 58:07Speaker 1: on because they did a homeless fashion shoe and they
- 58:11Speaker 1: had real people experiencing homelessness, which Isis was. At the time,
- 58:16Speaker 1: I didn't realize and they kept saying, who's that hero
- 58:19Speaker 1: in the background because she's serving I survey And then
- 58:24Speaker 1: it became this whole big deal because she was trans
- 58:25Speaker 1: and they were like, it was a lot. And then
- 58:28Speaker 1: of course get the fag off the tv um. Something
- 58:35Speaker 1: that Tyra does so well that flourished in ant him
- 58:38Speaker 1: and then you know, transcended in her talk show was
- 58:42Speaker 1: her innate ability to uncover what people's greatest fears are
- 58:47Speaker 1: and then use them against them. Yes, you can tell
- 58:50Speaker 1: that Tyra either loved fear factor or invented fear factor.
- 58:55Speaker 1: Like shout out to the producers. They were working. They
- 58:57Speaker 1: were working between like Tarantula us and like suspending these
- 59:01Speaker 1: girls at like great heights over like invisible cat looks
- 59:04Speaker 1: and like all this different stuff. But there's the only
- 59:07Speaker 1: episode of Tyra that I remember seeing as a kid
- 59:10Speaker 1: was an episode where she talks about the greatest fears
- 59:13Speaker 1: and she has all these like kind of everyday people
- 59:16Speaker 1: come on and say, oh, my greatest fear is so,
- 59:17Speaker 1: and so she says, like, let's say, my greatest fear
- 59:21Speaker 1: is cats, and she'd bring out like ten. Yeah. There
- 59:25Speaker 1: was this one girl who her greatest fear was like
- 59:28Speaker 1: pennies and loose change, and so Tyra put like a
- 59:32Speaker 1: Rolex watch at the bottom of like a tub of
- 59:36Speaker 1: pennies and she's like, if you want to watch, you
- 59:38Speaker 1: have to get it. And this girl had like this
- 59:40Speaker 1: long acrylic manicure and she's like just shuffling away pennies
- 59:44Speaker 1: with like her nail. Tyra, It's so funny, like her
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: getting cast in life size as this like which I've
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: never seen Iconic the original and the sequel. Literally, I
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: haven't seen the sequel. But isn't the sequel a Christmas movie? Yes?
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: I thought it was, like I think that the movie
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: it's like Thanksgiving. It's a Thanksgiving movie. Like casting her
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: as like a deranged and naive plastic doll like typecast
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: Like literally she is like and I'm not even like
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: she's literally like the Barbie of our generation, you know
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: what I mean, Like she she encompassed, she is, she's
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: she is every woman in America's Next Time and now she's,
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: um what is she? She judges she's dancing with Apparently
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: she's not very good. Have you guys watched it? No? No,
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: but like of course she's not good. She also did
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: America's Got Talent as well, and he wasn't good at
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: that either, Like that's not her thing where because like
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: she's she's got She's got a lot of personality that
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: she does. I'm still waiting for Model land O tell
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: us about the park. It was supposed to be a
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: theme park, right, and because it was based off of
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: a book like any she wrote when she wrote it,
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: allegedly her name's on the cover. Um, but yeah, she
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: has this whole world. She's also has now a isn't
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: it like an app? Like a game? Oh my god?
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: Is it like Kim Kardashian Hollywood? Yeah, it's like one
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: of those. And it was like a huge deal. I
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: imagine that. Yeah, I'm sure, you know, I'm sure she's
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: got lots of irons in the fire. What do you
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: it's it's it's a lot because she's also got an
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: ice cream store called Smiles Cream, Great Santa Monica, your kid.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: I'm fairly sure this was a story that I covered
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: on one a day. Tyra banks Is net worth is
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: estimated to be ninety million. It should be I think
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: that's how I think that's a little high. I don't know.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: She is a mobile bankable productions are I feel like
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: she also has an expensive lifestyle. I'm sure she does,
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: you know, but still, and she's got that kid. Now
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: she's probably reporting net losses. But my cream, Oh my god,
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: I don't know she got she got? She's always working.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: Can you smile? I mean, can anyone really smile other
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: than Tyra? I don't think. I mean I feel like
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: I'm actually learning about modeling and how to move my
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: body by watching the show. Like there's so many things
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: Where'm like, oh, it's like you need all your lettings out,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: you know, like even when you look it feels uncomfortable,
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: doesn't mean it looks you want the eye to go.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: I don't want it to be straight lines, you know.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: I also felt like Tyro was kind of I feel
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: like Tyra was the only judge that, despite giving also
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: deranged and unfair feedback, gave the most constructive feedback and
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: was often right about like modeling things, where like Janis
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: was just like, you're fat and ugly, and Nigel Barker
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: was like I want to I would, I would to
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: suck the lin from between listen, Okay, I just couldn't
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: get it. Absolutely still today, yesterday, today, tomorrow. No, that's I.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: I do not endorse Janice and Nigel do. Both have
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: virtually no constructive criticism, virtually no authority on literally anything,
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: and offer their opinions on every and to me like
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: Nigel is as charmless as like honestly like Jeffrey Bower
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: Chapman and Drag Race Canada like he was just sub
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: I thought he was so horrible on top of being
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: kind of a predator. Would drag Grace even exists without
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: Top Model? I don't think it would literally literally would?
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: I mean, what is the legacy of Top Model? Top
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: Top Model is the mother of so much of what
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: you see on TV. Right, Like, this was part of
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: an era and it was one of the biggest shows
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: on TV at a time, right, which is a lot
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: to say when you're competing with the American Idols, which
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: was also huge right in those first six or those years.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: Um and so now I think the love is blinds
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: of the world can look and take something from took
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: something from a top model, your project Runways, your next
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: in fashions, your like all of these like reality competition shows,
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: particularly the ones that have people like living together as
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: well in that aspect you're making the bands. All of
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: that goes back to bank. That is one thing I've
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: always wished was part of Drag Race was them living together.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: And I do kind of wish I would love that
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: would see well, I would love to see more drag
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: content that's not um that is yeah, that is not
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: a competition, Like it would be so fun to have
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: like a drag queen. Real World. Yeah, that show is
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: going to be on TV for a long time. They're
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: going to have to figure out a way to reinvent it.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: Maybe that's the next iteration is like the coel you
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: get to see the queen's living to the unreal world. Yeah,
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: the realness world, the realness world watching America's Next Top Model,
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: even though you know the ja'son Tyra are so like
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: untouchable in terms of like a judges panel has actually
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: made me appreciate like Ru and Michelle and Ross and
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Carson like a lot more because I think that there,
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: I think that what they just to like compare a
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: little bit, like I do think that, Like I mean,
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: obviously what they do is so singular and amazing, but
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: there is like a genuine interest in like the drag
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: Queen's exceeding. You know that each of the judges like
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: kind of are invested in and like want them to
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: be better where America's next time model just because I
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: mean I don't necessarily blame them entirely, like that's the
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: state of reality TV at the time, but like they
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: more so reveled off of kind of really distorted ideas
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: about the modeling industry and like exaggerated and provoked these
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: girls by kind of using these like crazy like things
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: that they were like, well this happened to me. I
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: had to post with the live crocodile, So now you
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: know what I mean, Like, um like it I think that,
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: I mean, I know, I'm being so serious about the
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: show and it was like widely entertaining, but like it's
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: so funny like that there's such a it is there's
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: such an unprecedented like level of like gaslighting and maneuvering
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: that production and the judges had to do in order
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: to convince all these girls that this was completely normal,
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: like and that they actually get something out of it
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: that they would get because like, I don't think the
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: prize that was offered in Top Model was like all
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: that amazing, like guess getting a contract. It seemed amazing,
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: But I think what they were promising them more than anything,
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: And I think what sets it apart, what sets it
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: apart from a lot of other reality competitions is they
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: were offering the models and even the ones who didn't win, careers,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: Whereas a lot of these other reality TV shows it
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: was either it was like you won and that was
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: kind of it, like you got whatever the prize was
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: and that was it. With Top Model, it was we're
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: giving you and like the tools to be a working model. Yeah,
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: And that's another thing, right, like that Top Model came
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: at a time where they like the tangible things that
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: you could get from it, Like the fashion industry at
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: that time was this like exclusive type place. You didn't
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: know how to get your your foot in the door.
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: If you're in Idaho, and you want a model, right.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: Top Model kind of was that entry way for a
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: lot of girls to get that first contract or even
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: just to get some experience taking some photos, like legitimately right,
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: because a lot of the girls didn't have any experience.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: And then when drag Race came around, and now the
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: current iteration of drag Race, like there's there's such like
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: a um a marketing commodities world, merchandizing world around the
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: show where like I feel like you you have to
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: be a little bit more aware of of shit, right
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: because your career. You can be on one episode of
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: Drag Race and go on to have a really amazing career.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: You couldn't be on one episode of Top Model and
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: go on to have a great career. And you can't
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: come in. You can't come into drag Race though um unfinished.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: You can't come in without knowing what you're doing. And
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: on Top Model you could. You people would come in
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: and they would teach you how to walk, they would
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: give you a makeover, they would teach you how to pose.
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: Like you know, there was as abusive I think as
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: it was definitely like it was like a modeling boot camp. Yeah,
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: it was, And that was like her imagination of the
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: show like Tyro's and I totally agree with you. I
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: think that you know, as much as we talk about
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: it now and the way that we cancel Tyra like
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: every five years or whatever, it's like she really did
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: want Like I think Tyra thought she was helping nine
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: times out of tack. Absolutely she was helping in a
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: really weird, problematic way, Like she was replicating a lot
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: of the harm, right that she experienced in the form
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: of these challenges. But like that was the industry, right,
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: It was that traumatic. It was that traumatic, and so
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: like it's a weird way to say, but like I
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: think she thought that she was doing them a favor.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: And I think a lot of the girls would say,
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: you know what it was like today post trauma, it
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: was a ship show. But like I learned some things
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: that I needed to learn in that that shitty situation
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: that like helped me navigate this industry in the ways
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: that like we're better, right, Like it's really weird and
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: complex and complicated, um, but like I think that's how
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: we should like look at the show and look at
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: Tyra in the first place. Is like it's complicated totally,
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: and to what you said earlier about how like Tyra
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: had bosses too, Like she's gone on record to talk
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: about how she had to fight to get plus size
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: models or fight to get you know, certain kinds of
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: representation on the show against the will of like her executives.
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: And I think that, you know, it's I think if
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: we were to make if we were to you know,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: reboot the show today, which like you know, they want
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: to reboot everything, so it might not be that far.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: They've rebooted this twice already, Yes, exactly exactly. It's like
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: who will the judge be next time? Who will the
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: host be naming? But they would never tire would never
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: think I think it's time for Tira to come back.
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: I would do well, you know, she came back for
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: like the last two seasons or something like that after
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: Rita Aura. But it was they were trying to make
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: it too modern to like it was. It wasn't working. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: I don't want to woke. It was really weird because
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: it it became very social media heavy, so it was
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: like you had to take your your selfees was like
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: part of it. It was really Brian Boy was like
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: the social media like representative or whatever. It was really
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: interesting times to say that. Well, I guess now, like
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: what would even how would it even work? Because modeling
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: has changed so much. You know, I'm not here for
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: like the woke of occasion of like most reboots, Like
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: we've talked about this before, especially with like the end
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: just like that of it all and things like that.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: But I do think that, you know, if the former
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: iteration of like a and yeah kind of like profits
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: off of and like corrupts, what are the worst parts
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: of the modeling industry? I do think that there's a
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: seamless way to instead like have it be like to
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: highlight the industry's shortcomings and to like tell these girls
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: that it's like something that you have to go through,
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: but it's still it's like normal, Like there there was
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: there was a way that Tyra could have affected change
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: or could affect change, as opposed to just upholding existing
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: terrible things about the industry, you know what I mean. Um,
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: but I mean the industry still is that terrible. I
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: mean the guy because I think I think that she
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: thought and she probably would still feel like she did
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: effect change, right, because like it was it was hard
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: and it was traumatic, and you know, like but I
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: remember the bullshit that they put Takara through in season
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: three as like the first real big girl right on
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: the show. And then to see was I think with
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: Psycho ten was Whitney who was the first and only
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: plus size winner of Drag Race, Drag Race of Top Model,
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: which I mean one and the same, Yeah, I here
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: you go. Um. But like there there were instances where
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: different types of beauties were featured on the show. Um,
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: and some of them when we look at them today
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: were like eel, that's disgusting. Like with Isis, for example,
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: all of the ship around her is like um. But
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: you know, as times have changed, the show try to change.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: I don't think we'll ever get another Top Model. I
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: don't think we need that. I don't I don't want that. Um.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: But for what it was and what it did, I
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: do think that it you know, it made some shifts,
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: it did something. It was and very bad, very bad. UM.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: So Car is also a really good example of like
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: how the women who really did win the show were
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: the ones that could try and come about out of
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: it as untraumatized as possible. And to Car was one
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: of those women that just like refused to be gas
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: like I think Brando was one of I think Jade
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: was kind of like that, like like people. I think
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: actually Tiffany was one of those girls too, because like
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: there's this there's a challenge during her season where they're
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: doing they have to do this shoot as like a
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: tennis player, and they tell the photographer to be as
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: mean to the girls as possible to kind of show
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: them that they're always going to deal with assholes. And
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: Tiffany was the only one that was like, you're being
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: an asshole, you know. Like so like the girls that
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: could say like, wait, this isn't reality, like there were
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: there were girls who said I'm doing this on my turn. Yeah,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: and Danielle to like she refused to close her gap
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: at first. She did, she didn't, you know she I
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: think that was like kind of effective, but she did.
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: She did close eventually. Yeah, but listen, I'm in this competition.
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: It's free dental. Its free dental, you know, a free dental,
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: and like a like a free like Sally Hershberger haircut
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: girl I would do and I would have a spider
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: on my face for a sallyber cut. Oh yeah, you could.
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: You could put me in a grave and dress me
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: up a clown and I would go in a grave
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: just with not even for that's actually one of my
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: top like sexual fantasies is to have sex in an
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: open grave. That that track, So like okay, now, I
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: think I think the thing that's maybe freshest on Virgin's
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: minds are people that consume antim is like every like
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: I feel like you are probably have bared witness to
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: every iteration of it. But like every five years we
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: canceled Tyra, but like this most recent cancelation was like
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: very loud and happened to think during the pandemic because
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: I think the show was on Hulu or something, and
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: Tyra tweeted an apology that was not very effective. She said,
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: we messed up. Yeah, yeah, um. But then she I
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: was actually like shockingly moved by a YouTube apology that
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: she did around the same time. She was on some
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: YouTube show, and of course they brought up all the
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: controversy that was kind of circulating on social at this
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: time about things that have happened that were egregiously you know,
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: racist or fat phobic or transphobic or whatever. All of
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: the Albeism, all of them, all of the Obius and
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: Islam and she said, Um, you know, I have apologized
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: for this before. I feel like I've apologized for it
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: in my book, and I've apologized for on my TV show,
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: and I will continue to apologize for it every time
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: it comes up. She's like, it is my job too
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: apologize over and over because that is like what I
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: can do. That's like what I should do as someone
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: who's being held account And I'd never heard even though
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: ty relax a lot of nuance and a lot of
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: different I was actually so shook because I'd never heard
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: an apology. I've never heard a celebrity be that. Um,
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: I don't want to, you know, say that there's humility
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: to Tyrade. I don't know exactly what she didn't. She didn't,
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: you know, bust out the notes up. And she's not
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: shirking responsibility, right, because that's what we often see, right.
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: It often is somebody being like, oh I was just
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: I was just a face for it, or you know,
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: the the network or or what or that was just
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: our that's how we did things at the time. It
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: is what it is type of energy. She's like taking
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: a little bit of response. She was like, yeah, we
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: did some fun the ship. Yeah we compatized them girl
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: up because I think if she did any of the
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: other stuff, she would also be shirking like the power
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: of it being her show, because like I think both
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: are true, Like, yes, they did funked up stuff under
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: her guidance, but also she created tell show that changed culture.
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: She created she also, I don't know if a lot
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: of people know this. Kenya Barris was also on the
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: ground root ground floor of America's Next top Mottel and
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: he would go on to do all of his foolishness
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: that he's doing right now so impact Tyra b look us. Yeah,
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: I don't know Tyris, Like I still love Tyras so much.
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: Of course, I feel like the course any like anytime
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: someone calls for mother, I never had ever would want.
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: And she kind of played that part like she really
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: she would sit down with the girls and be like,
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: tell me about your when she stood up and barked
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: like a dog kid. Next week, we will be back
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: with a very special episode. We're gonna been up the
