The Jays stumble, Mariners edge Dodgers, trade market heats up ... and more for July 29th · The Sports Reset Canada: Daily Sports Recap in 2 Minutes

The Jays stumble! This is The Sports Reset for Wednesday, July 29th. In MLB, the Jays let a winnable one get away in Washington, falling 8 to 6 to the Washington Nationals in a game that keeps Toronto’s deadline conversation front and centre. Kevin Gausman has already been part of the bigger story around the club, with Toronto weighing whether pending free agents should be moved if the playoff push keeps slipping. Elsewhere, the Seattle Mariners edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 7 to 6. The Detroit Tigers blanked the Baltimore Orioles 14 to 0, the Milwaukee Brewers handled the San Francisco Giants 8 to 2, the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10 to 2, the New York Yankees held off the Chicago White Sox 3 to 2, and the San Diego Padres outlasted the Colorado Rockies 8 to 7. Looking ahead, the Jays are right back at Nationals Park today against the Washington Nationals, and the focus is simple: steady the pitching, get the offence moving earlier, and avoid letting this series become another deadline-week warning sign. The Atlanta Braves and New York Mets also have a doubleheader at Citi Field after Tuesday’s weather postponement. The Seattle Mariners get another shot at the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium, while the Milwaukee Brewers continue a West Coast set against the San Francisco Giants. Beyond the scoreboard, the MLB trade market is heating up before Monday’s deadline, with contenders like the Brewers being watched closely as possible aggressive buyers.
