Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: The Treaty Principles Bill is dead in the water
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: David Seymour. You might have seen him on the news
- 0:02Speaker 1: last night or in the Herald yesterday basically calling Christopher
- 0:06Speaker 1: Luxen and the government undemocratic for refusing to support this
- 0:11Speaker 1: Treaty Principle's Bill past the first reading when it gets
- 0:14Speaker 1: to Select committee. Have you listened to what he said
- 0:17Speaker 1: on the news last night?
- 0:18Speaker 2: Well, I think it is a disrespectful and anti democratic
- 0:21Speaker 2: to tell people that, no matter what they think, you're
- 0:24Speaker 2: not open to changing your mind.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Is this the issue you want to dine and ditch over.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Let's face that the Treaty Principle's Bill is dead in
- 0:31Speaker 1: the water anyway. A couple of reasons for that. Number one,
- 0:35Speaker 1: and most importantly, your coalition partners have said, nah, we
- 0:39Speaker 1: don't want to support it past the first reading. And
- 0:41Speaker 1: even if they agreed to it, the debate and the
- 0:44Speaker 1: media attention would surely from a political perspective, purely political perspective,
- 0:49Speaker 1: would drown out the next two years of potentially good
- 0:52Speaker 1: headlines about economic growth and all the stuff the government,
- 0:55Speaker 1: the other stuff the government's trying to do. And even if,
- 0:58Speaker 1: as you say, it's a incible thing to do it
- 1:01Speaker 1: for democracy to have the debate, etc. The next government
- 1:04Speaker 1: will just undo it anyway, won't they. Whoever, and whenever
- 1:08Speaker 1: that government might be, the more oxygen you give this,
- 1:12Speaker 1: the sooner that day might arrive. In reality, I don't
- 1:16Speaker 1: think David Seymour is a stupid man or a stupid politician.
- 1:19Speaker 1: He's not, and he knows this is going nowhere. It's
- 1:22Speaker 1: probably more about positioning for a plank to balance a campaign.
- 1:27Speaker 1: On in twenty twenty six. For more from News Talks
