- 0:01Speaker 1: Show, Kevin Smith is here, that FIFA is happening right now, right, yeah, yeah,
- 0:08Speaker 1: Well people, I guess a lot of people flying in
- 0:10Speaker 1: for it from other countries.
- 0:13Speaker 2: What they're doing is they're flying and they going to
- 0:15Speaker 2: New York. They're staying in New York. But the games
- 0:18Speaker 2: are like in Jersey, Jersey, and so in their heads
- 0:22Speaker 2: they're like, well, New Jersey's next New York. And they're
- 0:24Speaker 2: trying to walk. Oh, it is impossible. It is virtually
- 0:30Speaker 2: impossible to walk from Manhattan to East Brotherford, New Jersey
- 0:35Speaker 2: without using a tunnel or a bridge, and they or
- 0:38Speaker 2: freeway or what we call the turnpike, and they really frown.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Kevin Smith is here. And if you follow Kevin on
- 0:47Speaker 3: social media and you see all the different things, one
- 0:49Speaker 3: of the things he's spending a lot of his time
- 0:51Speaker 3: on is this movie theater that he saved from his
- 0:55Speaker 3: It's his childhood movie theater in New Jersey.
- 0:59Speaker 2: It was going to be the movies come to play.
- 1:01Speaker 3: It was gonna be condos and you do a lot
- 1:03Speaker 3: of really cool things there. I kind of feel and
- 1:04Speaker 3: I wanted to get your your take on this. You
- 1:06Speaker 3: hear a lot about you know, what's what's gonna happen
- 1:10Speaker 3: with the movie theater. Is the movie theater going to
- 1:12Speaker 3: continue to be a thing or is it done? I
- 1:14Speaker 3: think the way that you're doing it, these experiences, how
- 1:18Speaker 3: people go there, and it's just more than just going
- 1:20Speaker 3: and grabbing popcorn and watching something.
- 1:22Speaker 2: That seems to be the currency of the now in
- 1:24Speaker 2: the future, which world of AI. Yeah, every thing is
- 1:29Speaker 2: easy to fake and whatnot. People now want live and
- 1:33Speaker 2: going forward, they feel like that's going to be the
- 1:36Speaker 2: big thing. So for years now, I've I've relied on live, Like,
- 1:40Speaker 2: I don't just release a movie in theaters. It costs
- 1:43Speaker 2: too much money and we'll probably die on the vine. However,
- 1:47Speaker 2: if I take it out strategic strategically and bring it
- 1:50Speaker 2: to my audience and stuff like that, and show up
- 1:53Speaker 2: with the movie, so I'm there backing it as well,
- 1:55Speaker 2: you're getting two shows for one. You know, you're getting
- 1:58Speaker 2: like a live show and you're getting the movie good
- 2:00Speaker 2: to Q and A afterwards, And it seems like that's
- 2:03Speaker 2: what everyone's gonna have to drive towards. So I don't
- 2:06Speaker 2: think in our lifetime we're gonna see a lot of
- 2:08Speaker 2: multiplexes built. Ever, again, I.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Think right now, what we got is what we got
- 2:13Speaker 3: it down.
- 2:14Speaker 2: It's apparently gonna shrink from there. Do I think the
- 2:16Speaker 2: movie going experience will ever go away? Absolutely not. Do
- 2:18Speaker 2: Like records, they're always be enthusiasts.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Where the record stores other than like vintage kind of shops.
- 2:24Speaker 2: In the cities and whatnot. But also think about this,
- 2:27Speaker 2: like when you had theater back in the day, and
- 2:31Speaker 2: the advent of cinema threatened theater, people like, oh, theater
- 2:35Speaker 2: is gonna go away. It just got more expensive. Exactly.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Movies are just gonna get more expensive in order to
- 2:40Speaker 2: make the rent. They're gonna be like, all right, well,
- 2:42Speaker 2: if you want your movie, you want your cinema. You
- 2:44Speaker 2: want to enjoy what you enjoyed years ago as a kid.
- 2:46Speaker 2: And when you want it the old way, they're gonna
- 2:48Speaker 2: make it pay for the nose. Thirty forty fifty bucks
- 2:50Speaker 2: for that experience right now. Movie ticket at our movie theater.
- 2:54Speaker 2: We held the line for years at ten bucks. We
- 2:56Speaker 2: finally had to go up to twelve bucks for a
- 2:58Speaker 2: night show and stuff during the day. It's like seven
- 3:01Speaker 2: fat cats, I know, get rich, get rich on a
- 3:04Speaker 2: non profit movie theater.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Yeah, what do you think about movies being incorporated into
- 3:09Speaker 3: things like the sphere and causem like brilliant.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Like fantastic. I mean, I know, like with the Wizard
- 3:16Speaker 2: of Oz of the sphere there was some consternation about
- 3:19Speaker 2: like the created dwarves.
- 3:22Speaker 3: What does that word?
- 3:24Speaker 2: I'm assuming something negative. They were upset and I said dwarves.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I should have said munchkins. They added munchkins to the film,
- 3:33Speaker 2: like in order to make it go all the way around,
- 3:35Speaker 2: they had to add stuff that wasn't there. So naturally
- 3:38Speaker 2: people are purists, are like, I don't want that. But
- 3:41Speaker 2: the idea of you know, one more place to watch
- 3:44Speaker 2: a movie, particularly a movie like that which is celebrated
- 3:47Speaker 2: and you know when we were kids, they put it
- 3:48Speaker 2: on TV once a year. It was such a big deal,
- 3:50Speaker 2: Like makes sense for a venue of that size. What
- 3:53Speaker 2: else are they going to do there, for heaven's sakes, Yeah, no,
- 3:56Speaker 2: and the visual and I would love to see clerks
- 3:58Speaker 2: on that giant. Well, the cause of people.
- 4:01Speaker 3: They're doing Harry Potter stuff that's really really cool.
- 4:03Speaker 2: That makes sense, right, You take the movies everybody loves
- 4:06Speaker 2: and loves seeing in the theater and you present it
- 4:08Speaker 2: and new for that's what forty X kind of does
- 4:12Speaker 2: you know, and uh, the screen X experience. They take
- 4:15Speaker 2: the movie and they just amp it up, yeah, to
- 4:17Speaker 2: make it like for the people hanging off the edges, going,
- 4:20Speaker 2: I don't I could watch a movie at home, but
- 4:21Speaker 2: it's like, yeah, but can your chair come to life
- 4:23Speaker 2: and shake you?
- 4:24Speaker 3: And stuff like that's fun. Like going back to the
- 4:26Speaker 3: nostalgia thing, I went for the Back to the Future
- 4:28Speaker 3: anniverse where they like this past October they had a
- 4:31Speaker 3: back in theaters and say it's been forever since the
- 4:33Speaker 3: eighties since I saw in the theater, and it's my
- 4:35Speaker 3: favorite movie of all time, the original. It's my favorite
- 4:37Speaker 3: movie of all time. And that was that was cool,
- 4:39Speaker 3: and I made it always to go.
- 4:40Speaker 2: To the theater.
- 4:41Speaker 4: They always do well when they put stuff up like oh,
- 4:43Speaker 4: we're gonna put Jaws back for summer.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Yeah, people go to that. Yeah. I've noticed a lot
- 4:47Speaker 2: of cats, Like for years I've been and I'm not
- 4:49Speaker 2: saying they stole the idea for me, but for years
- 4:52Speaker 2: I've been out there tub thumping with my own movies,
- 4:54Speaker 2: like Bringing the Moutains. But I just saw it to
- 4:57Speaker 2: stand by me. Kids are like out on a tour
- 5:00Speaker 2: to watch a movie and then they chit chat afterwards,
- 5:03Speaker 2: and then I'm like, you know what, good for them,
- 5:04Speaker 2: but I'd like to whip my beak a little off,
- 5:10Speaker 2: like stand by me money because you know those screens.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Us so yeah, well, you know, you know, Kevin, You've always,
- 5:15Speaker 3: you know, gone about things your own way to get
- 5:19Speaker 3: things done, like there's an obstacleality, there's an obstacle you
- 5:24Speaker 3: figure away, like, oh well, how can we do There's
- 5:26Speaker 3: so many people just go, well, that's the world we
- 5:27Speaker 3: live in, or it is what it is. I hate
- 5:29Speaker 3: those answers we get around here in the corporate world
- 5:31Speaker 3: and it's like no, no, no, don't just accept the know,
- 5:33Speaker 3: ask the why, all right, why can't this be done?
- 5:36Speaker 3: And you've done a really good job with that. I
- 5:38Speaker 3: just saw something recently I thought was interesting with with
- 5:40Speaker 3: clerks and when you filmed it, because so many people
- 5:43Speaker 3: thought and the story you ran with for a long time,
- 5:46Speaker 3: the black and the black and white thing about oh well,
- 5:49Speaker 3: it was an artistic choice to put it in black
- 5:50Speaker 3: white because that's what the surveillance video from the store
- 5:54Speaker 3: would have seen. Like as I had nothing to do
- 5:56Speaker 3: with it at all.
- 5:57Speaker 2: It was when we made the flick we made we
- 6:00Speaker 2: shot black and white because it was inexpensive. In order
- 6:03Speaker 2: to shoot color, we would have had to rent a
- 6:06Speaker 2: completely different light package or a light package, you know.
- 6:10Speaker 2: I was content to use the fluorescence.
- 6:13Speaker 3: From inside the store.
- 6:15Speaker 2: But Dave Klein, who is our DP, who ps first.
- 6:22Speaker 2: He grew up to be the cinematographer of Mandalorian and Grogu,
- 6:26Speaker 2: the guy shot clerks. What a glow. So Dave says
- 6:28Speaker 2: to me, he goes, if we shoot under these lights
- 6:31Speaker 2: at the pallor everyone's complexion can be green. I said why,
- 6:34Speaker 2: he goes, because that's what you get with these lights.
- 6:36Speaker 2: He said, we need tungsten lights. I was like, I
- 6:38Speaker 2: can't afford to run a new lighting package. And he goes, well,
- 6:40Speaker 2: that's what happens. What happens if we shoot in black
- 6:43Speaker 2: and white. He goes, well, then there's no color whatsoever.
- 6:46Speaker 2: So nobody looks green. And so I was like, all right,
- 6:48Speaker 2: let's shoot in black and white. So it was purely
- 6:51Speaker 2: a cost decision. And so when the movie went out
- 6:53Speaker 2: and played at festivals and whatnot, it started getting reviewed.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Like one of the reviews I read said, the film
- 6:59Speaker 2: is brilliantly shot in black and white, as if from
- 7:03Speaker 2: the perspective of the store security camera, and from then
- 7:07Speaker 2: point on, whenever I did interviews like why black and White,
- 7:10Speaker 2: I was like, well, I wanted to make it feel
- 7:12Speaker 2: like the store security camera.
- 7:17Speaker 3: I think he told that story on our friend Jim
- 7:20Speaker 3: Kurr's show, Jim Kerrman, you want a legend New York
- 7:24Speaker 3: and New York. I was watching the video from your
- 7:26Speaker 3: appearance there at LJ.
- 7:27Speaker 2: What is he now?
- 7:27Speaker 3: He's like, you want a four point three? Yeah, that's right.
- 7:32Speaker 2: I told him I was watching The Soprano did a
- 7:35Speaker 2: rewatch The Sopranos, which holds up absolutely unbelievably well man.
- 7:40Speaker 2: But there's one episode where like in the background, you're like,
- 7:42Speaker 2: Jim Kerr on w.
- 7:43Speaker 3: P was so, yeah, well, Kevin Smith is here. I
- 7:47Speaker 3: want to talk about your movies when we come back.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Okay.
- 7:50Speaker 3: I've seen a lot of people, UH talk about or
- 7:53Speaker 3: do things like this, and I thought it was pretty fun.
- 7:56Speaker 3: No Doubt just did one where they had everybody, all
- 7:58Speaker 3: the you know, Gwen and all the people from Doubt,
- 8:00Speaker 3: like the other band mates, in a line and they
- 8:02Speaker 3: would put up like two different songs and they had
- 8:05Speaker 3: like maybe step to the left or step to the right,
- 8:08Speaker 3: and I think just an insight from the people who
- 8:11Speaker 3: made it.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:12Speaker 3: So, looking at some of your movies, and I went
- 8:14Speaker 3: to go see, like, because there's so many to choose from,
- 8:17Speaker 3: I wanted the narrow it down because we could be
- 8:19Speaker 3: here all day with how many movies you've done. But
- 8:22Speaker 3: all right, so I'm gonna give you six. You have
- 8:25Speaker 3: to pick two more to go into what we're gonna
- 8:28Speaker 3: do after the break.
- 8:29Speaker 2: All right.
- 8:29Speaker 3: So Clerk's made the list because I went based on
- 8:32Speaker 3: this is a ranking of what they say from all
- 8:34Speaker 3: your movies have the biggest cultural impact. All right, So
- 8:38Speaker 3: Clark's was was you know on that?
- 8:40Speaker 2: Still?
- 8:42Speaker 3: What's that?
- 8:43Speaker 2: I'm still eating out on Clerk?
- 8:45Speaker 3: Sure, right, but I'm saying, like, so the and these
- 8:46Speaker 3: are in no particular order, Okay, I have Chasing Amy
- 8:51Speaker 3: on here, so Clark's Chasing Amy. I have mal Rats
- 8:54Speaker 3: on here, Zach and Mary making Porno is on here,
- 8:58Speaker 3: Dogma clearly on. They're one of my favorite movies of
- 9:01Speaker 3: all time. And then Clerks too, because it doesn't matter what. Okay,
- 9:05Speaker 3: two more so I've all do wild cards. Two wild
- 9:07Speaker 3: card spots.
- 9:08Speaker 2: I'm gonna go with uh Tusk and Clerks.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Three Tusk and Clerks three. All right, you'll see where
- 9:17Speaker 3: we're going with this when we come back from the break.
- 9:19Speaker 3: You can hang out right, you're not.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Is this one of these ninety seconds things refused to
- 9:23Speaker 2: be again? No?
- 9:24Speaker 3: No, no, no, wow. Now I feel like an idiot
- 9:28Speaker 3: costing me all these questions when the hammer is not there.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Kevin Smith, I don't think you're gonna think this is
- 9:37Speaker 3: very fair. And I allow a lot of people like
- 9:40Speaker 3: artist types like yourself. Well, it's like having to choose
- 9:45Speaker 3: between your children. These are your children, these films in
- 9:48Speaker 3: your case, or songs from your band. That's exactly what
- 9:51Speaker 3: we're asking to do. We've come up a little bracket style
- 9:53Speaker 3: with different movies and you got to pick two. You
- 9:57Speaker 3: threw Tusk in there and then and then Clerk's three, right,
- 10:02Speaker 3: and so i'ma go down the list the bracket style,
- 10:04Speaker 3: so first round and you have to pick one that
- 10:07Speaker 3: moves on to the end. We'll eventually get down to
- 10:09Speaker 3: one Kevin Smith movie, all done by your own votes.
- 10:13Speaker 2: So I mean, don't I don't sport. Ever, this sounds
- 10:18Speaker 2: like a sport thing like basketball for fake basketball, fantasy
- 10:27Speaker 2: football for fake So this is like that. Yeah, you know,
- 10:34Speaker 2: I'm seeing a grid in.
- 10:36Speaker 3: My head even as a kid. You never played sports, never, never,
- 10:41Speaker 3: not once.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I'm seeing is more based on a d C comics
- 10:45Speaker 2: group d C K bringing it down to the ultimate hero.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Alright, all right, so uh here we'll we'll start tough
- 10:54Speaker 3: round number one. Clerks O G. Clerks or Tusk.
- 11:00Speaker 2: That is tough man, because you're talking about two works
- 11:03Speaker 2: of striking originality, one a dent to the culture more
- 11:09Speaker 2: than the other.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Okay, but this is your own personal We're just talking you.
- 11:13Speaker 3: There's no considered nobody else's opinion. This is just Kevin Smith.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Kevin Smith movies.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Like which movie could I watch more?
- 11:23Speaker 3: Whichever? Like like again, this is which whichever one? Only
- 11:26Speaker 3: one can move on? Which you saving?
- 11:28Speaker 2: Oh my god, now you put it like that, no pressure. Well,
- 11:33Speaker 2: I mean, Clerk's Humble Bragg is in the Library of Congresses.
- 11:39Speaker 2: It's protected and the motion picture fault, so.
- 11:44Speaker 3: This has no consequence on anything. Just so you know,
- 11:46Speaker 3: it's like, I just wanted to.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Say that anyone didn't know that the government has deemed
- 11:54Speaker 2: my first film sotant that you protected if you.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Went with They're not going to take Clerks out the ibrary.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Congress true as well. With this administration, you never know.
- 12:04Speaker 2: I'm gonna say, I'm gonna go old school. I'm gonna
- 12:07Speaker 2: go clerks Man clerks, long live the nineties, gen X
- 12:10Speaker 2: forever now menace.
- 12:11Speaker 4: I can't remember if you like or hate the word zeitgeistist.
- 12:15Speaker 3: I know you've used it a few times, but no, I.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Just learned about it, like maybe a year ago. Right,
- 12:21Speaker 2: that's why you're mad. I'm so mad. I haven't had
- 12:23Speaker 2: this word, this word.
- 12:25Speaker 4: But out in the zeitgeist. I feel like Tusk makes
- 12:29Speaker 4: so many lists, gets talked about so much because it's
- 12:32Speaker 4: written about so much, because it's so disturbing and weird
- 12:36Speaker 4: your lips.
- 12:36Speaker 2: To God's ears. I hope that's the case. I know
- 12:41Speaker 2: it is found an audience and found respect that was
- 12:45Speaker 2: not there on opening day. I assure you. I read
- 12:48Speaker 2: those reviews. They're pretty unkind. But yeah, I as much
- 12:51Speaker 2: as I love Tusk, I gotta go old school Clerks.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I can't get nowhere without it.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Other first round matchup, Malrats. Mal Rats are clerks to Marats.
- 13:03Speaker 2: I love Clerks too. Is my one of my favorite
- 13:06Speaker 2: films I've ever made. But mal Rats is a snapshot
- 13:09Speaker 2: of a time and place that now acts as a
- 13:12Speaker 2: kind of a historical document. Kids don't go to the
- 13:15Speaker 2: malls like that. Yeah.
- 13:16Speaker 3: True, Well Menace might argue that. Yeah, he'll argue that
- 13:19Speaker 3: the mall has happen. There are but and then there's
- 13:26Speaker 3: what you're talking about, a ghost town.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Yeah. I've been to both. And it's like when we
- 13:30Speaker 2: were kids, you count on every weekend and mall being packed,
- 13:33Speaker 2: and now it's you know, scatter.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Shot Dogma or Zach and Mary make a porno Dogma
- 13:41Speaker 3: dog movie.
- 13:42Speaker 2: I really stood the Test of time also has like
- 13:45Speaker 2: I mean, not like Zach Mury doesn't have a pretty
- 13:47Speaker 2: all star cast with Seth and Elizabeth, but Dogma, come.
- 13:50Speaker 3: On, Alan Rick and George Carter, you got it back.
- 13:53Speaker 3: That was a whole battle, another battle to navigate.
- 13:56Speaker 2: So that's got the side quest to it. You're right,
- 13:58Speaker 2: long tail? Yeah?
- 14:00Speaker 3: Ago all right? Uh? Chasing Amy another one know Near
- 14:04Speaker 3: and Dear to your Heart or Clerks three, which you
- 14:06Speaker 3: put in there as your wild card.
- 14:08Speaker 2: I'm going Clerk's three. Okay. I love Chasing Amy, but
- 14:11Speaker 2: it has aged poorly for some folks. That's that movie
- 14:16Speaker 2: used to be the umbrella movie, the thing I could
- 14:18Speaker 2: always open up if things got bad, like, you know,
- 14:21Speaker 2: if they were like, eh, we made the Yogos are
- 14:23Speaker 2: like yeah, but at least he made Chasing. Yeah. But
- 14:27Speaker 2: there's a generation of folks who did not grow up
- 14:30Speaker 2: with that movie. That's see that movie as offensive now
- 14:34Speaker 2: and you can't really explain. You can try to explain,
- 14:36Speaker 2: but it won't really be accepted that it's like, hey,
- 14:40Speaker 2: this movie was incredibly advanced for its time, Like when
- 14:44Speaker 2: it came out, it was very ahead of it.
- 14:48Speaker 3: I don't like how people do that. Though you can't
- 14:51Speaker 3: correct the past, past films or songs or whatever.
- 14:54Speaker 2: It is totally, but I you know, I also don't
- 14:56Speaker 2: want to jump on that train because then you got people. Yeah,
- 15:00Speaker 2: and that's why I love Birth of the Nation.
- 15:04Speaker 3: I'm not saying Kevin Smith on Kevin Smith movies. Next round,
- 15:09Speaker 3: Clerks or mall rats Clerks, Clerks, Yeah, clerks three or
- 15:17Speaker 3: Dogma dogma. Now in the final Clerks or Dogma, only
- 15:24Speaker 3: one can stand.
- 15:25Speaker 2: It's the way it should be. Honestly, we always knew
- 15:27Speaker 2: it was gonna.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Come down to this clerks dogma.
- 15:35Speaker 2: See I want to say dogma. But in the off
- 15:38Speaker 2: chance that Jesus is real, I can't risk that. You know,
- 15:45Speaker 2: I don't want to go up to have them. But
- 15:46Speaker 2: I remember the time he was on the Woody Show.
- 15:49Speaker 2: You said Dogma was your best word. You go to hell.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Dogma is a wonderful original movie. But at the end
- 15:58Speaker 2: of the day, uh, it's It's the Wizard of Oz
- 16:02Speaker 2: dressed up. Clerks is my magic trick. Clerks is the
- 16:08Speaker 2: equivalent of me pulling a quarter from behind your ear.
- 16:12Speaker 2: It never goes old. The amount of credibility that Tusk
- 16:17Speaker 2: has afforded me is immense in retrospect. However, the amount
- 16:23Speaker 2: of credibility that Clerks has afforded me over a lifetime.
- 16:28Speaker 2: It's just one of those things that like, because everyone
- 16:30Speaker 2: has had a crappy job, even if they haven't worked
- 16:33Speaker 2: in a convenience store. I think winds up being the
- 16:36Speaker 2: most identifiable thing I've ever done. And I did it
- 16:40Speaker 2: when I was a part of everybody else. Now like
- 16:43Speaker 2: I'm a filmmaker for a living. I breathe verified air
- 16:45Speaker 2: and so, and my movies are like, you know what
- 16:47Speaker 2: if Jane solid Bob went to Mars but back then,
- 16:51Speaker 2: boots on the ground, I was behind that same counter.
- 16:54Speaker 2: So I was essaying life behind the counter through you know,
- 16:58Speaker 2: a fictional filter. So that movie I think has the
- 17:01Speaker 2: most authenticity to it. And it's the one that, let's
- 17:04Speaker 2: be honest, on my gravestone will be like, yeah he
- 17:06Speaker 2: made Clerks. Got to mention the other one. Still do
- 17:09Speaker 2: that one.
- 17:09Speaker 3: So there you go, guys, Clerks.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Yeah, we always knew. Was there a doubt? Did you
- 17:14Speaker 2: think for a second?
- 17:15Speaker 3: I wasn't sure because I mean, I mean, there's so
- 17:18Speaker 3: many movies that have had such a you know, impact
- 17:21Speaker 3: just on you personally, or the stories that kind of
- 17:23Speaker 3: go behind it for whatever reason.
- 17:25Speaker 2: And uh, the one is the the lever upon which
- 17:28Speaker 2: the fulcrum of my entire career rest. Sure, so it
- 17:31Speaker 2: makes sense always going to be Clerks. Yeah.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Somebody said, I own a DVD copy of Dogma. It's
- 17:36Speaker 3: my comfort movie.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Thank you recent recent purchase perhaps or the old dvd? Uh?
- 17:43Speaker 3: In that movie Atlantis Moore set one of Sammy's favorites.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Do you have any good Yeah? Do you have any
- 17:48Speaker 3: good Atlantis Moore set of stories from.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Here that time? I mean it's not great Atlanta story,
- 17:54Speaker 2: but it is like a real Atlanta story. So we're
- 17:59Speaker 2: we're in in post on Dogma and she's getting ready
- 18:03Speaker 2: to write the song that closes out Dogma. It's called
- 18:06Speaker 2: Still really Beautiful. So I go see her perform and
- 18:12Speaker 2: it was in Manhattan. I forget which venue. I remember
- 18:14Speaker 2: seeing her out here at the Universal Amphitheater before that
- 18:18Speaker 2: went away. I can't remember where I saw her. There
- 18:20Speaker 2: might have been the zig Field or something like that.
- 18:24Speaker 2: So I went to see her the night before. I was,
- 18:26Speaker 2: you know, purst in the crowd. I had pretty good
- 18:28Speaker 2: tickets because I knew her. So then I went to
- 18:30Speaker 2: her hotel the next day and she was gonna play
- 18:33Speaker 2: the song still for me for the first time. So
- 18:36Speaker 2: I get to her room and she's like, how was
- 18:39Speaker 2: the show? I said, Oh my god, I thought you
- 18:41Speaker 2: were awesome. I said, but you should talk more. I said,
- 18:44Speaker 2: like between songs, like you would just say the name
- 18:47Speaker 2: of the song and then you go into it. But like,
- 18:49Speaker 2: you're so interesting, you should.
- 18:51Speaker 3: A little storytellers, remember storytellers.
- 18:53Speaker 2: That's what I was pushing. But she like then she
- 18:56Speaker 2: was like oh, and then we continue having a conversation.
- 18:59Speaker 2: But she's the kind of person that, like, you know,
- 19:01Speaker 2: if it, if it means something, she could come back.
- 19:04Speaker 2: She's very authentic, so After like two minutes of further conversation,
- 19:07Speaker 2: she went back to it. She was like, you know what, Kevin,
- 19:09Speaker 2: that really hurt my feelings. I was like, what did
- 19:12Speaker 2: She's like when you said that I should be speaking
- 19:14Speaker 2: more between songs, She's going like, it just felt critical,
- 19:18Speaker 2: and I was like, I honestly to be critical. I
- 19:21Speaker 2: just like, I think you're interesting as hell, And I
- 19:23Speaker 2: was just I guess I was just thinking if I
- 19:25Speaker 2: was the one singing, I'd be doing more talking than
- 19:27Speaker 2: anything else. But she that like it hit her in
- 19:31Speaker 2: some way, like maybe she fell that was explaining more.
- 19:36Speaker 2: I'm like, hey, it is what you gotta do. Meanwhile,
- 19:38Speaker 2: she's got like one of the greatest highest selling albums
- 19:41Speaker 2: of all time, and the guy who made mall rats
- 19:44Speaker 2: you know what you gotta do? You go, And I
- 19:48Speaker 2: remember that.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Think about that.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Whenever I see somebody after a performance, I never tell
- 19:54Speaker 2: them the truth. Ken, When was the last time you
- 19:58Speaker 2: saw Alanison concert? Let me see the last time I
- 20:02Speaker 2: saw Lamba's play?
- 20:04Speaker 3: Because then again, yes, so I yeah, I just saw
- 20:09Speaker 3: her recently.
- 20:11Speaker 4: She talks so much between songs and now she even
- 20:14Speaker 4: has shut up.
- 20:18Speaker 2: I'm not gonna take credit for it. But perhaps that
- 20:22Speaker 2: you know, stuck in her crow forever. She's like, I'll
- 20:24Speaker 2: show him, but I have seen like online because people
- 20:28Speaker 2: shoot content her just like holding a four minute.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Full on play in between songs.
- 20:34Speaker 2: I love that. She was so so well spoken. So
- 20:40Speaker 2: it's like to me, I wasn't saying like you're doing
- 20:42Speaker 2: it wrong. I was just like, I would love it
- 20:44Speaker 2: if you just talk between songs. Years later, I was,
- 20:47Speaker 2: you know, I grew up in Jersey, so Springsteen's in
- 20:50Speaker 2: the blood whether you choose him or not. Right, But
- 20:52Speaker 2: I went to see Springsteen on Broadway when he was
- 20:55Speaker 2: doing that show years ago, and that I was like,
- 20:59Speaker 2: now I've been sleeping on Springsteen my whole life because
- 21:01Speaker 2: never mind the songs, like the songs I'd heard my
- 21:03Speaker 2: whole life, he just talked between each one and he
- 21:07Speaker 2: was so damn entertaining. I was like, where this guy
- 21:10Speaker 2: gets it? And then I'm like, oh, because he's been
- 21:11Speaker 2: in front of audiences for decades now. His storytelling was
- 21:16Speaker 2: like unparallel.
- 21:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I dig it. I dig it. When there's like
- 21:20Speaker 3: you kind of get the story behind the story, the
- 21:22Speaker 3: story behind the song, the song that you know, like
- 21:25Speaker 3: how all then you it all ties together, like there
- 21:28Speaker 3: was an old radio guy and uh, and that's the
- 21:31Speaker 3: rest of the story. Remember that guy. Yeah, what's what's
- 21:36Speaker 3: his name? Steve Harvey, Steve Harvey, not Steve Harvey, Harvey Harvey,
- 21:43Speaker 3: God damn and the rest of the story. Yeah, it's
- 21:49Speaker 3: a damn hard Carvey bitch. That's a flailing good day.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Boundaries, boundaries.
- 22:02Speaker 3: That guy was a storyteller everything. But you have this
- 22:05Speaker 3: thing and all of a sudden, like whoa, there's like
- 22:07Speaker 3: that yeah, wow moment.
- 22:09Speaker 2: I'm sure there's some pretty cool that are like, I
- 22:11Speaker 2: don't want to hear nobody, so I want to hear
- 22:12Speaker 2: the songs. I'm there to rock out or I'm there
- 22:15Speaker 2: to dance and stuff, And I understand that, But for
- 22:17Speaker 2: you know me, I'm more of like, who invented it?
- 22:19Speaker 2: What made it work? What is the story beyond that? Well?
- 22:21Speaker 3: Kevin Smith signing his new comic Jays of Future Past
- 22:26Speaker 3: He and and Jason Muse Jay and Silent Bob at
- 22:30Speaker 3: the Weed Shop seventy ninety five Hollywood Boulevard. This is
- 22:33Speaker 3: tomorrow at four pm.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Uh.
- 22:36Speaker 3: They also have his new marijuana products, the behm the
- 22:39Speaker 3: Banana Hammock. I still smell in the study. Yeah, kids,
- 22:45Speaker 3: very and more about with me can be found on
- 22:49Speaker 3: our social media also Kevin Smith's social media. Now, Kevin,
- 22:53Speaker 3: before you go, yes, are you open for one more
- 22:55Speaker 3: ninety second round? I?
- 22:57Speaker 2: Yeah, but I feel in real test subject, feel like
- 23:03Speaker 2: a rabbit.
- 23:03Speaker 3: We're digging in. We're digging in.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Here with any game. I'm a game player.
- 23:07Speaker 3: Here here we are? All right, Kevin? Would you rather
- 23:09Speaker 3: be in a small group or a big crowd?
- 23:12Speaker 2: Big crowd?
- 23:13Speaker 3: Uh?
- 23:14Speaker 2: So?
- 23:14Speaker 3: Do you plan ahead or do you wing it?
- 23:16Speaker 2: Wing it?
- 23:18Speaker 3: Introvert or extrovert?
- 23:20Speaker 2: Good question. I think I'm an introvert who forces himself
- 23:24Speaker 2: to be an extrovert through his job.
- 23:25Speaker 3: Same Rewatch a favorite or discover something new?
- 23:29Speaker 2: Watch a favorite?
- 23:32Speaker 3: Are you an optimist or a realist?
- 23:35Speaker 2: Optimist?
- 23:37Speaker 3: Would you uh rather be understood or be remembered?
- 23:47Speaker 2: Be remembered, be remembered.
- 23:50Speaker 3: Would you rather direct Batman or direct a Batman? Or
- 23:54Speaker 3: direct a Star Wars film?
- 23:56Speaker 2: Batman?
- 23:57Speaker 3: Batman?
- 23:58Speaker 2: It doesn't take as much imagination. BI guy have enough
- 24:00Speaker 2: imagination to pull off the Star Wars let.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Alone at that, but with the right amount of banana hammock.
- 24:05Speaker 3: I think maybe true?
- 24:07Speaker 2: Do it?
- 24:07Speaker 3: Yeah, and you're one last question. Would you rather follow
- 24:09Speaker 3: your passion or follow your talent?
- 24:14Speaker 2: I think my passion because I don't even after all
- 24:16Speaker 2: this time, I still don't even know what my talent is.
- 24:18Speaker 2: I think I'm a really good foosball player, but I
- 24:21Speaker 2: didn't manage to turn that into Yeah, you know what
- 24:24Speaker 2: I'm saying.
- 24:26Speaker 3: Kevin Smith, everybody.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Blager always be man more ninety second games.
- 24:32Speaker 3: Yeah, well, thanks, I appreciate you coming in, thanks for
