- 0:01Luke chapter 2. Let us pray, O Heavenly Father,
- 0:10let us have reverence for your word.
- 0:13Let us have reverence, God, for such a time as this.
- 0:19We thank you, Lord, that you came as a little baby.
- 0:23We thank you, Lord, that you lived a perfect and sinless
- 0:27life. We thank you, Jesus, for your
- 0:32ultimate sacrifice. Lord, you are the greatest gift
- 0:37that we could ever receive. Lord, you are our everything.
- 0:46Lord. You are the reason that we have
- 0:49our being. Lord, it's all about you, King
- 0:52Jesus. It's not about things.
- 0:57It's not about stuff, it's not about what we can get, but God,
- 1:05you are our gift. You are our everything, Jesus,
- 1:12and we love you. And Lord, we celebrate your
- 1:17birth and we celebrate you coming in.
- 1:21Lord, we know that we will be there with you, and we know that
- 1:28you love us and that you gave first.
- 1:32So Lord, let us love all of our neighbors and love our family
- 1:37the way that you love us. And help us to know that, Lord,
- 1:42You're the reason for the very life that we have, for the very
- 1:47breath that we have for our very next heartbeat.
- 1:52Lord, we love you and help us. Lord, help us to set a side time
- 2:00to come and celebrate this monumental moment of you coming
- 2:06into the earth to save us, save us from our sins, to wipe the
- 2:12slate clean, to help us stand before God holy, to help us
- 2:19stand before God spotless. Lord, it is only by your blood
- 2:27that we enter in to the throne room of grace.
- 2:31You ripped the veil from top to bottom so that we can come in to
- 2:36the holiest of holy places and worship You in spirit and truth.
- 2:43We love you Jesus, and it's in Your holy name that we pray.
- 2:48Amen. Let's start in verse one.
- 2:55And it came to pass in those days that there went out a
- 3:02decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.
- 3:10What's he talking about here in verse one?
- 3:13Well, what you're going to need to know is that Caesar Augustus
- 3:19was being used by God. He had it in his mind that
- 3:23everyone needed to be taxed, but God had it in his mind that the
- 3:27Savior of the world was coming on the scene.
- 3:32He was dawning upon creation. And we need to know that all of
- 3:39these things were prophesied about and they were going to
- 3:44come to fulfilment and the culmination of this moment of
- 3:49Caesar Augustus not even being aware that he was fulfilling the
- 3:56prophecy of little baby Jesus being born in Bethlehem. 2 And
- 4:03this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.
- 4:09So here we know that this is a reliable account that Luke set
- 4:16out to write and he gives us a time stamp here so that we can
- 4:22go back and search out this time and we can have our certainty in
- 4:29the Word of God. We can have our sure footedness
- 4:32in the Word of God. We can stand on the cornerstone
- 4:37of Jesus Christ, knowing that this is the spoken word of God
- 4:43Almighty. Verse 3 And all went to be
- 4:48taxed, everyone into his own city.
- 4:51For and Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city of
- 4:57Nazareth into Judea unto the city of David, which is called
- 5:03Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David.
- 5:09So here we know that Jesus Christ is the bread of life, and
- 5:14he is to be born in this city of bread.
- 5:20This Bethlehem is the House of bread.
- 5:23So it is just like God to paint this beautiful masterpiece, and
- 5:29he knows what he's doing. 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused
- 5:36wife, being great with child, 6. And so it was that while they
- 5:43were there, the days were accomplished that she should be
- 5:48delivered. So here we know that they had to
- 5:52travel while Mary was pregnant, and she did not give birth to
- 5:57Jesus Christ until they had been in Bethlehem.
- 6:02And we know that there was no room for them in the end. 6 And
- 6:10so it was that while they were there, the days were
- 6:14accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought
- 6:19forth her first born son, and wrapped him in swaddling cloth,
- 6:24and laid him in a Manger, because there was no room for
- 6:28them in the end. Think about it.
- 6:31Here comes the Saviour of the world, God coming as a little
- 6:36baby, and there's no room for Him.
- 6:40Do we make room for Him in our hearts today?
- 6:43Friends, I pray that you will look at this Manger.
- 6:51This would have been a feeding through that the animals would
- 6:57have eaten out of and they lay God as a little baby in a
- 7:05feeding through A and there were in the same country shepherds
- 7:13abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
- 7:18So these shepherds would have been keeping all of the temple
- 7:22flock. These would have been the flock
- 7:25of sheep that would be used for the Passover.
- 7:30And the shepherds were out in the fields watching over their
- 7:36sheep by night 9. And lo, the Angel of the Lord
- 7:42came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them,
- 7:47and they were so afraid. This is always the response when
- 7:53people see an Angel is, do not fear, do not be afraid.
- 7:59And it would have been a very frightening sight to see this
- 8:05Angel. 10 And the angels said unto them, Fear not, for behold,
- 8:13I bring good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all
- 8:18people. Here this Angel is preaching the
- 8:21good news of Jesus Christ coming into the world to be born and to
- 8:27live a perfect life and to die a criminal's death.
- 8:32To be buried and raised again on the third day, To appear to many
- 8:39and to ascend to the right hand of God and to redeem us from all
- 8:45of our sins, so that we can stand before God Almighty one
- 8:49day, righteous and blameless, because of the blood that he
- 8:56shed on that cross. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city
- 9:03of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.
- 9:08He is the anointed, He is the Son of God, the only begotten,
- 9:13that whosoever will believe in him will not perish, but have
- 9:17eternal life. Believe in your heart that God
- 9:22raised him from the dead. Confess him with your mouth.
- 9:26Confess that Jesus is Lord today and be saved. 12 And this shall
- 9:33be a sign unto you. You shall find the babe wrapped
- 9:38in swaddling clothes, lying in a Manger.
- 9:41Notice how he appeared to these poor shepherds.
- 9:49That would have been of the Jewish lineage. 13 And suddenly
- 9:55there was with the Angel a multitude of the heavenly host,
- 10:00praising God and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest and
- 10:06on earth, peace, goodwill towards men.
- 10:13This is what we desperately need, friends.
- 10:16We need this peace that only comes from a right relationship
- 10:20with God through His Son Jesus Christ.
- 10:24We need this goodwill towards our neighbors.
- 10:28Love God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all
- 10:31your soul, with all your strength, and love your neighbor
- 10:34as yourself and with food and clothing.
- 10:37Be content. And here you can see this
- 10:42multitude of the heavenly host. This is a beautiful sight,
- 10:47friends, that these lowly shepherds, these unclean
- 10:52shepherds would have been able to witness in this Angel of the
- 10:58Lord with the great multitude chose this outcast of society to
- 11:05reveal the birth of Jesus Christ.
- 11:08You can see that Jesus is love is for the whole world.
- 11:12He is no respecter of men. 15 And it came to pass, as the
- 11:19angels were gone away from them into heaven.
- 11:22The shepherd said, one to another, Let us now go even unto
- 11:27Bethlehem, to see this thing which has come to pass, which
- 11:32the Lord has made known unto us. This is power from on high.
- 11:39These shepherds have abandoned their profession to follow the
- 11:48Lord, to follow the trail, to go and see the thing that the Angel
- 11:54of the Lord has proclaimed to them, this good news of Jesus
- 11:58Christ. They've left everything.
- 12:01They've laid everything down to go and to see this thing. 16 And
- 12:11they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph and the babe
- 12:17lying in a Manger. It was just as the angels had
- 12:21told them. 17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad
- 12:26the saying which was told them concerning this child.
- 12:31And This is why the angels of the Lord came to them, because
- 12:35He knew they would publish it round and about.
- 12:37He knew that they would not be perplexed by it, but they would
- 12:42go out and tell everybody about it.
- 12:45And it's just like God to reveal Himself to the lowest estate,
- 12:52and you can see how the Lord works and how the Lord thinks.
- 12:58He could have came in a palace, He could have came in a golden
- 13:06crib. But what did he do?
- 13:08He came lowly as an innocent baby, and was laid in a feeding
- 13:16through to a set of poor parents. 18 And all they that
- 13:26heard it wondered at those things which were told them by
- 13:30the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things and pondered
- 13:35them in her heart. There was something peculiar
- 13:40about this whole event for Mary. She was visited by Gabriel.
- 13:47She was told that she would house the Saviour of the world,
- 13:52the Son of God. It's amazing, when you really
- 13:56stop and think about it, of what Mary must have thought her whole
- 14:02time of knowing that she housed the Son of God, but she loved
- 14:08him as her own. She pondered all these things in
- 14:12her heart. I am sure that she was perplexed
- 14:17by the complexity of the whole matter. 20 And the shepherds
- 14:22returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things
- 14:27that they had heard and seen as it was told unto them.
- 14:31They found it just like the Lord said that they would.
- 14:34And that is what you'll find, friends, when you search out and
- 14:38seek out the face of God, you're going to find that every single
- 14:42one of the words that contained in this good book, the Bible,
- 14:50What you're going to find is it all checks out.
- 14:53And that it has the power to produce the peace and the
- 14:58contentment and the joy and the love that you so desperately
- 15:02desire. The worth and the dignity that
- 15:05God desires to give to you is found with trusting every single
- 15:11one of the words that are contained inside of the Bible.
- 15:17Nothing added and nothing subtracted.
- 15:19Friends 21 And when 8 days were accomplished for the
- 15:26circumcising of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was
- 15:34so named of the Angel before he was conceived in the womb.
- 15:39So we do know that Gabriel told Mary that his name was to be
- 15:46called Jesus. He was the Savior of the world,
- 15:50and here she was obedient. Here they were obedient to carry
- 15:58out the plan of the ages to name him appropriately. 22 And when
- 16:06the days of her purification, according to the law of Moses
- 16:11were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem to present him
- 16:15to the Lord. 23 As it is written in the law of the Lord, every
- 16:23male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord.
- 16:30So here he was the first born, and here we can see that Mary
- 16:35had more children after Jesus. She was not in perpetual
- 16:39virginity. Friends, we can see here that
- 16:45that Jesus was dedicated as the first born unto the Lord, and we
- 16:53can see that he needed to identify himself with sinful man
- 16:57by being circumcised, 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to
- 17:05that which is said in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtle doves
- 17:09or two young pigeons. The actual sacrifice would have
- 17:13been a lamb, but they were too poor, and so they brought these
- 17:20two turtle doves or two young pigeons to sacrifice instead.
- 17:26But the reality was, they brought the Lamb of God.
- 17:34How amazing is this story? 25 And behold, there was a man
- 17:39in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and the same man was
- 17:43just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the
- 17:49Holy Ghost was upon him. Praise the Lord for Simeon.
- 17:53He waited patiently for this moment.
- 17:55God had revealed to him that he would see it, 26 And it was
- 18:00revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost that he should not see
- 18:05death before he had seen the Lord's Christ, the anointed, the
- 18:11chosen, the only begotten. 27 And he came by the Spirit into
- 18:17the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do
- 18:21for him, after the custom of the law, 28 then took he him up in
- 18:26his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now let your servant
- 18:35depart in peace according to your word.
- 18:39How amazing is this that God had revealed to Simeon that he would
- 18:43see the Saviour of the world before he tasted death.
- 18:47I pray, friends, that you have seen the Saviour of the world,
- 18:50that you have dined and supped with the Saviour of the world,
- 18:53that you have reached out and touched the hem of his garment,
- 18:56friends, and that you have received your healing and
- 18:59wholeness. Friends, I pray that you have
- 19:04locked eyes with him. 34 My eyes have seen your salvation.
- 19:13Can you say that today, friends? 31 which you have prepared
- 19:17before the face of all people? 32A light to lighten the
- 19:23Gentiles and the glory of your people, Israel.
- 19:28We can see God's infinite plan from all eternity for all ages
- 19:34is for the Gentiles and the Jews.
- 19:37Friends, you can see that this Jewish man caught a glimpse of
- 19:42God's glory, and he saw that God's plan of the ages was for
- 19:46all people. 33 And Joseph and his mother marveled at those
- 19:52things which were spoken of him. We know that Mary treasured all
- 19:57these things in her heart. We know that Simeon's word must
- 20:01have cut them. We know that they were perplexed
- 20:05by all of it, and they marveled. Of what was being spoken of this
- 20:09little baby and how he rocked the world with his birth and
- 20:13everything changed. And here we are, friends,
- 20:18completely undone by this moment in history.
- 20:25It changed everything. 34 And Simeon blessed them, and said
- 20:30unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall,
- 20:36and the rising of again of many in Israel, and for a sign which
- 20:42shall be spoken against. So here we know that Jesus is a
- 20:48lot like a magnet for some. He draws them in and you just
- 20:56are so attracted. And for the other side of the
- 21:01coin, it's this repelling as you get close.
- 21:05It is such a repulse to those who refuse to believe in the
- 21:11truth, and they delight themselves in evil and they are
- 21:17delusional, and they war against a loving God who loves them. 35
- 21:27Yes, a sword shall Pierce through your own soul also that
- 21:34the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
- 21:37That is a prophecy. Here Simeon breaks out and he
- 21:42starts speaking the truth and he tells Mary that a sword will
- 21:48Pierce her heart. And this is the complexity of
- 21:52her perplexity. This is her being thrown all
- 21:57around in her emotions because here is this helpless little
- 22:02baby that needs her, but he is her Saviour.
- 22:06What a thought, friends, and we know that Jesus reveals the
- 22:12thoughts, and He knows our very next thought.
- 22:18He knows all of our thoughts, friends, and he can hear them.
- 22:25And we need to bring them to him and give them over to him and
- 22:29take everyone captive and do not let them take root unless they
- 22:35are holy and pure and blameless and right. 36 And there was 1
- 22:42Anna, a prophetess, the daughter Ephanuel of the tribe of Asser.
- 22:49She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years
- 22:56from her virginity. And she was a widow of about
- 23:00four score four years which departed not from the temple,
- 23:06but served God with fasting and prayers night and day.
- 23:10We can see this adoration of Anna.
- 23:13We can see that through this fasting and prayer and her being
- 23:19given over to the worship of Yahweh, the Yahweh was pleased
- 23:24to allow her in on this moment. 38 And she, coming in that
- 23:30instant, gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and she spoke of
- 23:35him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.
- 23:40He is our Redeemer, and our Redeemer lives, and he is alive
- 23:45today. 39 And when they had performed all things according
- 23:52to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee and to
- 23:57their own city of Nazareth. We know that Jesus is the
- 24:02branch. He is a Nazarene. 40 And the
- 24:08child grew and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom, and
- 24:14the grace of God was upon him. Can you imagine?
- 24:19We're getting to see a little bit of the boyhood of Jesus our
- 24:24Savior. And we know that He was perfect
- 24:26and lived a sinless life. And we know that He was all God
- 24:31and all man. And we know that as he hit each
- 24:34one of the milestones, He was at the top of the chart, friends.
- 24:40He grew and he was strong and he knew that he was here for his
- 24:47father's business. 41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every
- 24:54year at the feast of the Passover. 42 And when he was 12
- 24:58years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of
- 25:02the feast. 43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they
- 25:06returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem, and
- 25:11Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
- 25:15So here Jesus knows that he must be about his Father's business,
- 25:19and it is around 12 years old that a Jewish boy would take up
- 25:25his Father's business. And Jesus knowing that he was
- 25:31the Son of God, and knowing all the prophecies that were
- 25:36foretold, he knew that he must be about his Father's business.
- 25:42So he goes into the temple to teach. 44 But they supposing him
- 25:50to have been in the company when a day's journey, and they sought
- 25:54him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. 45 And when they
- 25:59found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.
- 26:07What a thought that his parents had somehow misplaced the Savior
- 26:14of the world. 46 And it came to pass that after three days they
- 26:20found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors,
- 26:26both hearing them and asking them questions.
- 26:31So here Jesus has all authority, Jesus has all wisdom, Jesus has
- 26:39the heart of God and the mind of God, friends, and Jesus is God,
- 26:43and Jesus is teaching them. He's only 12 years old and he is
- 26:48already teaching them all of the foundations of the world and how
- 26:54everything all fits together intricately.
- 26:59And He is the culmination of all knowledge and all wisdom.
- 27:05He is the very Christ. He is the anointed, He is our
- 27:13all sufficient sacrifice, the atonement for all of our sins,
- 27:17and he has all authority and He is omniscient.
- 27:21Friends. Don't miss it, friends.
- 27:25He knows all. He can discern everything.
- 27:30He knows all of our prayers all at once.
- 27:33He knows all of our thoughts all at once.
- 27:35He knows all of our emotions all at once.
- 27:38Nothing is too grand for Him. We are His created and He is the
- 27:44Creator. And can you even imagine the
- 27:47angels looking down and seeing the Creator of the world
- 27:52choosing to come as creation would have thought?
- 28:0147 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding
- 28:09and answers. You cannot outwit him.
- 28:14You cannot back him into a corner.
- 28:17He is all knowledge. 48 And when they saw him, they were amazed.
- 28:26And his mother said unto him, Son, why have you thus dealt
- 28:31with us? Behold, your father and I have
- 28:35sought you sorrowing. 49 And he said unto them, How is it that
- 28:43you sought me? Did you not know that I must be
- 28:48about my father's business? Praise the Lord God, He knew
- 28:53what he was here for. He set his face like a Flint.
- 28:58He knew that he had come to be about his father's business. 50
- 29:03And they understood not the saying which he spoke unto them.
- 29:0751 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was
- 29:12subject unto them. But his mother kept all these
- 29:16sayings in her heart. So here we can see Mary again,
- 29:20the complexity of her perplexity, how she was just
- 29:29turned around by how this little boy needed her, but he was also
- 29:36her Lord. She kept all these sayings in
- 29:42her heart. We'll end on 52.
- 29:44And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature and in favor with
- 29:48God and man. He was perfect in all of his
- 29:53ways, friends. He was blameless and he was all
- 29:59man and all God. And he hit every milestone
- 30:02exactly when he was supposed to. And he was exceedingly great,
- 30:07friends, but He also never used his divinity to reach in and
- 30:23grab anything that he wasn't supposed to.
- 30:26If you just think about it for a minute, friends, how Jesus could
- 30:31be all man and He didn't perform all these silly little miracles
- 30:40during this time. He was about His Father's
- 30:44business. And He knew that he was the Lamb
- 30:48of God and he knew that he would be slain before the foundations
- 30:53of the earth and he would hang on a cross and die a criminal's
- 30:57death. And He knew that He was the
- 31:01Passover lamb that everything pointed towards.
- 31:05And as we get further away from that moment, everything points
- 31:09back to here is the most monumental time in all of
- 31:16history is right here in this moment, friends, that we are in
- 31:23and we are reading about. And Luke was so meticulous in
- 31:29all of his details to go and find all of this.
- 31:33And we don't need to add anything to the Bible, Friends.
- 31:39Everything that the Bible speaks of, we need to meditate upon.
- 31:43And if the Bible does not speak about it, we do not need to try
- 31:48to entertain silly ideas of what Jesus's boyhood must have been
- 31:54like. Let's lock in and believe every
- 31:57word and every syllable and watch how the peace of God
- 32:01floods in. Friends, I hope you've been
- 32:03blessed by this chapter. I know I sure have, many times
- 32:07over. I love you, so does God.
- 32:16We'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 32:18God bless you.
