Latest / Birdland Territory / O's fall to 7 games below .500, but Mike Elias hopes to be buyers
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: A good start, but not a good ending to the
- 0:11Speaker 1: Orioles weekend. They beat the Nationals Friday night and you're
- 0:14Speaker 1: hoping that's a great start to a homestand where they
- 0:17Speaker 1: nearly really need to rip off some victories here, but
- 0:20Speaker 1: then they lose the next two and this stat.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Birdland won't like.
- 0:23Speaker 1: The Oriols are three and nine the last two years
- 0:27Speaker 1: against the Washington Nationals. They've now gone six straight series
- 0:30Speaker 1: without winning one against a team they used to own.
- 0:33Speaker 1: They're no longer doing that. Welcome in Birdland Territory, Steve,
- 0:37Speaker 1: Tim and Brad. Before we get in some of the
- 0:39Speaker 1: specifics of the games this weekend, we want to touch
- 0:42Speaker 1: on Michael Elias's pregame dugout press conference with the media Saturday.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I was there for that. He took about twelve or
- 0:49Speaker 1: thirteen minutes worth of questions. As fans had probably seen
- 0:53Speaker 1: the quotes by now read them or viewed them. He
- 0:57Speaker 1: pledged that the Orioles expect to and are planning to
- 1:01Speaker 1: be buyers at the deadline. He did counch it with
- 1:04Speaker 1: we'll see the standings and more has to play out,
- 1:07Speaker 1: and we're not at the deadline yet. That's August third,
- 1:10Speaker 1: so the Orioles could play their way into something different
- 1:12Speaker 1: than that. But when the time he spoke, they were
- 1:15Speaker 1: a game and a half out of the wild card
- 1:17Speaker 1: and it's encouraging to hear they want to buy and
- 1:20Speaker 1: be buyers, but right now this team as zho and two.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Since he made those comments ironically, and what did you
- 1:28Speaker 1: guys make of Elias's comments?
- 1:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think it's encouraging for this team's
- 1:35Speaker 3: you know, prospects and what he envisions happening with this team,
- 1:39Speaker 3: and for the fans to be excited about that. It
- 1:41Speaker 3: just kind of goes back to the inconsistency and it's
- 1:43Speaker 3: we still have a month to go. So it's great
- 1:46Speaker 3: to hear him in it now, but I mean a
- 1:47Speaker 3: lot and change in the standings and where this team
- 1:51Speaker 3: is at come a month from now. But I would
- 1:53Speaker 3: definitely take it as an encouraging thing. I think when
- 1:55Speaker 3: the GM comes out and makes the bold statements saying
- 1:58Speaker 3: that they want to be sellers or buyers and they
- 2:00Speaker 3: want to, you know, compete for the playoffs, it's always
- 2:03Speaker 3: an encouraging thing as a fan, and especially with players
- 2:05Speaker 3: on the team, you want to be a part of
- 2:07Speaker 3: a winning team. And when the GM comes out makes
- 2:10Speaker 3: statements like that, I think it kind of puts the
- 2:12Speaker 3: pressure back on that this team was supposed to win,
- 2:16Speaker 3: They were supposed to be competitive, and he's just kind
- 2:19Speaker 3: of re emphasizing that point. And I think it's it's
- 2:22Speaker 3: kind of go time. We've talked about it last week.
- 2:24Speaker 3: It's just it's got to be go time. There's got
- 2:26Speaker 3: to be a sense of urgency. And I think it
- 2:27Speaker 3: kind of ticks it up even more of a level
- 2:29Speaker 3: when the GM comes up and makes a statement like that.
- 2:33Speaker 4: I wasn't surprised at all that he made those comments,
- 2:37Speaker 4: and he had even acknowledged that, yeah, this team's under
- 2:40Speaker 4: five hundred. But at that point Friday, there were just
- 2:42Speaker 4: a game and a half out of it. So of
- 2:44Speaker 4: course you would look to buy if the deadline was then.
- 2:48Speaker 4: And you also got to consider the specter guys that
- 2:52Speaker 4: Michael Oas has been under a lot of heat.
- 2:54Speaker 5: Recently, and you know he needs to make a move to.
- 2:58Speaker 4: Possibly save his job at this point, you know, if
- 3:02Speaker 4: this team doesn't continue to pick it up. But right now,
- 3:05Speaker 4: I'm with you, Brad, it does put the pressure back
- 3:08Speaker 4: on the players because you know, we keep saying it.
- 3:11Speaker 4: You gotta start stacking wins. You gotta start stacking series wins.
- 3:15Speaker 4: And this seemed like a prime spot for this team
- 3:19Speaker 4: to go on a run. Where heading into Friday, twelve
- 3:23Speaker 4: of their last fifteen games, we're at Camden Yards heading
- 3:26Speaker 4: into the All Star break.
- 3:28Speaker 5: You gotta win a lot of them, man, and.
- 3:30Speaker 4: And you lost to the first series of this bunch,
- 3:34Speaker 4: and now you go back their last seven series, Steve,
- 3:37Speaker 4: they're won five and one in their last seventh series
- 3:41Speaker 4: they beat Yeah, beating the Dodgers, of course. Yeah, but
- 3:46Speaker 4: you gotta find a way to build some momentum heading
- 3:49Speaker 4: into the All Star break.
- 3:50Speaker 5: And this was not the start that you wanted.
- 3:54Speaker 1: So I just asked about buyers or sellers. This quote
- 3:57Speaker 1: was I really hope. So we are planning that way
- 4:00Speaker 1: to be buyers in case it's the case. But I'm
- 4:03Speaker 1: gonna have to look at the circumstances and what happens,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and I'll be doing the right thing for the franchise
- 4:08Speaker 1: regardless of everything else. We're gonna have to see what
- 4:10Speaker 1: the standings are and what our team is looking like
- 4:13Speaker 1: at that time. But we're certainly making those preparations. Everyone
- 4:17Speaker 1: in this building is in the mindset of going for
- 4:19Speaker 1: it in twenty twenty six, We're going for it. I'll
- 4:22Speaker 1: let you know if that changes. And Tommy later was asked, essentially,
- 4:29Speaker 1: you know, with your job maybe writing a bit here,
- 4:33Speaker 1: is that going to impact what you do with this deadline?
- 4:36Speaker 2: And I read his comments to say no.
- 4:39Speaker 1: He was kind of saying, I need to do, as
- 4:40Speaker 1: the steward of the baseball ops, what's best for the
- 4:43Speaker 1: future of the Orioles.
- 4:45Speaker 2: And so he has bosses answer too as well.
- 4:47Speaker 1: They may tell him this is what we want you
- 4:49Speaker 1: to do, and then he has to go do what
- 4:51Speaker 1: his bosses want or quit his job.
- 4:53Speaker 2: I guess. So this is really a tricky situation.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Now, the Orioles have, as far as I can tell,
- 4:58Speaker 1: four pending free agents. They're they're in their walk year
- 5:04Speaker 1: Taylor Ward, Trevor Rodgers, Chris Bassett, Kegan Aiken. Oh, by
- 5:08Speaker 1: the way, Adlee Rutchman can be afragient at the end
- 5:11Speaker 1: up next year. So if their teams come to them
- 5:15Speaker 1: looking for their rentals, those are players who could be rentals.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Some Royal fans will cringe your trading. Trevor Rodgers. He's
- 5:22Speaker 1: pitching so well right now, Look how good he looks,
- 5:25Speaker 1: but those are some names that could be out there'd
- 5:29Speaker 1: be interesting to see.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely, I think it's those names are right up there,
- 5:34Speaker 3: and I think when you're looking at a starting pitcher,
- 5:37Speaker 3: Trevor Rodgers is getting hot at the right time. And
- 5:38Speaker 3: I just feel like, if nothing happens in the next
- 5:41Speaker 3: couple of weeks, I feel like he's going to be
- 5:43Speaker 3: your one trade ship outside of Adlee, which I don't
- 5:45Speaker 3: think the organization would be willing to part with. I
- 5:48Speaker 3: just find that really hard to believe. But he's the
- 5:50Speaker 3: one guy that you don't know if you're gonna be
- 5:52Speaker 3: able to resign or maybe you can resign after the year,
- 5:54Speaker 3: but you get something for him right now. It's just
- 5:57Speaker 3: it just puts everybody in a tough spot, and it's
- 5:59Speaker 3: nobody wants to be part of a team. I know.
- 6:01Speaker 3: I've been in clubhouses where that happens, and it's just
- 6:04Speaker 3: it stinks. You don't want to see your friends, you
- 6:06Speaker 3: want to see your teammates. Like I said, on a
- 6:08Speaker 3: team going into spring training, you expected to compete and
- 6:11Speaker 3: be buyers at this deadline. So it's just kind of
- 6:15Speaker 3: just it's crunched time now and it's really coming down
- 6:18Speaker 3: to the wire where they might have to make some
- 6:20Speaker 3: tough decisions that fans and guys in the clubhouse don't
- 6:22Speaker 3: want to see happen.
- 6:24Speaker 4: I think that's what makes this really tough is because
- 6:28Speaker 4: that's exactly what happened in the clubhouse last year at
- 6:31Speaker 4: this time, and you were expecting that to just be
- 6:34Speaker 4: a one off type situation. All right, let's restock the farm,
- 6:38Speaker 4: let's be more aggressive in the off season, which they
- 6:40Speaker 4: were signing Peede and bringing in Bos and Dassett and
- 6:44Speaker 4: Hellsley and so on and so forth. But the results
- 6:47Speaker 4: just haven't been there. And what's going in their favor
- 6:51Speaker 4: is the fact that maybe this is just an anomaly
- 6:54Speaker 4: of a season for the American League in.
- 6:57Speaker 5: Eighty two, eighty three, eighty.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Four wins, so where around that mark ends up getting
- 7:01Speaker 4: it done in the AL And that's what's kind of
- 7:04Speaker 4: kept you even in the mix. If this was a
- 7:06Speaker 4: normal year, maybe the Oriols are so far out of it,
- 7:09Speaker 4: you know, we're not even entertaining this buying portion. But
- 7:14Speaker 4: it isn't a normal year, so they still have opportunities
- 7:18Speaker 4: in front of them, but you're running out of time, guys,
- 7:22Speaker 4: August third, you were coming up on a month. They
- 7:25Speaker 4: have to go on a run and it has to
- 7:27Speaker 4: start now.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Yeah, and really you can in baseball my experience with
- 7:32Speaker 1: this deadline, if the deadline's August third, some teams wanting
- 7:36Speaker 1: to be making their decisions till July twentieth or July
- 7:39Speaker 1: twenty fifth, then they got a week to make the calls.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Some of the calls will have already been made, they'll
- 7:44Speaker 1: have the lay of the land. Then they'll get serious.
- 7:48Speaker 1: And here's the scenario.
- 7:49Speaker 2: What if the.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Oriols do both. What if they get a write offer
- 7:53Speaker 1: for Taylor Ward or somebody who's a rental and they say,
- 7:56Speaker 1: we got to make that move, but yet this team.
- 7:59Speaker 1: We can get a arting pitcher from this team, and
- 8:01Speaker 1: here's what it would take, and we're gonna make that move.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I've seen that happen before, where you see a little
- 8:06Speaker 1: of each Yeah.
- 8:08Speaker 3: And I think that. I think when you look at
- 8:09Speaker 3: this team and the way it's comprised, you have ninety
- 8:12Speaker 3: five percent of the roster coming back next year in
- 8:14Speaker 3: a contract, So I think that would make sense if
- 8:16Speaker 3: you get the right offer. I just it's just I
- 8:19Speaker 3: think it's for me it's watching the inconsistency of the
- 8:22Speaker 3: play on the field that just seems to me. It's
- 8:25Speaker 3: like you say one thing, but the team isn't telling
- 8:28Speaker 3: you the other, If that makes any sense. It just
- 8:30Speaker 3: kind of seems like it's not adding up. For whatever reason.
- 8:33Speaker 3: We've talked about this roster over and over and over again.
- 8:35Speaker 3: It's a winning roster, but it's just not showing up
- 8:38Speaker 3: on the field. And to me, at this point, if
- 8:40Speaker 3: you get an offer that you feel is going to
- 8:42Speaker 3: help you for next year, I just feel like you
- 8:44Speaker 3: gotta make it because nothing is seeming adding up this year.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Like you said, it's just been a crazy, weird year
- 8:49Speaker 3: that nothing seems to make sense. So who knows, maybe
- 8:51Speaker 3: if you got rid of somebody, they come over and
- 8:53Speaker 3: all sudden you start winning games, you get back in.
- 8:55Speaker 3: I don't, it's just a it's been a crazy season
- 8:57Speaker 3: so far of this year.
- 9:00Speaker 4: I'm sort of leaning with you, Brad, like maybe you
- 9:03Speaker 4: do a little bit of buying, but you know, based
- 9:06Speaker 4: on what the team has shown you, it doesn't look
- 9:10Speaker 4: like it's a piece away. It doesn't look like a
- 9:12Speaker 4: couple impact players away. I mean, you're seven games below
- 9:17Speaker 4: five hundred at this point, but I think something that
- 9:20Speaker 4: is abundantly clear, and Stevie kind of referenced it. Adley
- 9:24Speaker 4: Rutchman's been the name, and you know he's been brought
- 9:27Speaker 4: up a lot in recent weeks. And Michael Ias, I
- 9:30Speaker 4: thought his statement was very strong when asked about Adley Rutchman,
- 9:34Speaker 4: saying that we wish our commitment was even longer than this.
- 9:38Speaker 4: I'm paraphrasing. He didn't outright say this, But I don't
- 9:41Speaker 4: think they're looking to move Adley Rutchman. I'm sure if
- 9:45Speaker 4: it gets to that point, there's going to be calls,
- 9:49Speaker 4: but based on what Michael Lias was saying Friday, I
- 9:52Speaker 4: do not believe they are going to move Adley Rutchman.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Birdland. It will be Deel.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Even though the Orders have a little using record right
- 10:00Speaker 1: now and there's seven games under again after this lost
- 10:03Speaker 1: Sunday to the Nats. Season worst was eight, so they're
- 10:06Speaker 1: trending in a bad direction. They're still in the race
- 10:10Speaker 1: because the American League is so bad. Mathematically, they're a
- 10:13Speaker 1: contender in any other way, are they? They don't seem
- 10:17Speaker 1: to be telling us that mathematically, yes, the math can work.
- 10:21Speaker 1: So we'll see how these next few weeks play out,
- 10:24Speaker 1: how the Oils play their way in or out, what
- 10:26Speaker 1: rumors come, and we will be here to talk about
- 10:28Speaker 1: all of it through the next five to six weeks.
- 10:30Speaker 1: So trade deadline information involving the Orioles will give you
- 10:35Speaker 1: our best opinions on it right here on Birdland Territory.

- 12:00Speaker 5: Thank you, Sea Geek.
- 12:03Speaker 2: So the oil is looser than that.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Sunday six to four, they lose the series, and Tim,
- 12:08Speaker 1: you mentioned the series and I just went back over
- 12:10Speaker 1: the last five.
- 12:12Speaker 2: You went back a little further than me.
- 12:13Speaker 1: So one and two against the Padres, one and two
- 12:15Speaker 1: against the Mariners, two and one against the Dodgers, one
- 12:18Speaker 1: and two against the Angels, one and two against the Gnats.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Definition of inconsistency. One in four beating the best team
- 12:25Speaker 1: in baseball, losing to the other four they played six
- 12:28Speaker 1: and nine record going the wrong way seven games under
- 12:31Speaker 1: three and nine against the Gnats. I'm not going to
- 12:33Speaker 1: give me more of these stats. We don't depress everybody
- 12:35Speaker 1: watching this broadcast right now. But it's not great, and
- 12:39Speaker 1: so what can we can't make it up or you know,
- 12:42Speaker 1: try to spin you on this. So let's talk about
- 12:45Speaker 1: Kyle Bradish today. This was a strange outing for him.
- 12:47Speaker 1: He comes into this outing having allowed one run the
- 12:51Speaker 1: last two games with twenty one strikeouts.
- 12:52Speaker 2: He was dominant.
- 12:53Speaker 1: He was rolling two seven eighty e ras last nine.
- 12:57Speaker 1: He only gave up one hit today, but he walked
- 12:59Speaker 1: five and allowed four runs three, earned lowest strike percentage
- 13:03Speaker 1: of his career forty seven percent. Was this an outlier
- 13:08Speaker 1: brand or should we be concerned?
- 13:11Speaker 3: To me, I think it's an outlier. I just think
- 13:13Speaker 3: that last week his stuff was out of this world,
- 13:16Speaker 3: and I think the Nats kind of came into it
- 13:18Speaker 3: with a keep them in the zone, and I think
- 13:20Speaker 3: they just kind of tried to zone in on where
- 13:23Speaker 3: they thought his pitches might start and where they might
- 13:25Speaker 3: end up. And you got to give them credit because
- 13:27Speaker 3: they did not chase like we saw them do in
- 13:30Speaker 3: Anaheim and in Seattle last road trip. So it's I
- 13:34Speaker 3: think it was just one of those things where they
- 13:35Speaker 3: stuck to their game plan and they were going to
- 13:37Speaker 3: make them throw strikes and they really made them do that.
- 13:39Speaker 3: But it's just amazing to me again, two outs, nobody
- 13:42Speaker 3: on and gives up the three runs in the third inning.
- 13:45Speaker 3: It's just unbelievable across the staff how that seems to
- 13:49Speaker 3: have happened. And two out walks has always been a
- 13:52Speaker 3: baseball saying, when you, especially with nobody on, you got
- 13:54Speaker 3: to attack the zone. And to me today it just
- 13:57Speaker 3: seemed like he just needed to be a little bit
- 13:58Speaker 3: more aggressive, getting strike one and just going after these guys.
- 14:02Speaker 3: This stuff is so good, he doesn't need to get
- 14:04Speaker 3: the swing and miss all the time. I just felt
- 14:06Speaker 3: like he was kind of really living to the edges
- 14:09Speaker 3: with his fastball, and then from there he got behind.
- 14:11Speaker 3: And then we know he has trouble landing his breaking
- 14:13Speaker 3: balls when he has to in his zone. And it's
- 14:15Speaker 3: kind of just a recipe for kind of what happened today.
- 14:17Speaker 3: But I think it's just an outlier. It could just
- 14:19Speaker 3: be running into a little bit of tiredness. Like we
- 14:20Speaker 3: talked about, he's creeping up on one hundred innings through
- 14:23Speaker 3: thirty something innings last year in the big leagues. It's
- 14:25Speaker 3: a lot on somebody, and he's been rolling so much.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Those seven eight inning outings really start to add up
- 14:30Speaker 3: when you compound them outing after outing, So to me,
- 14:33Speaker 3: I wouldn't be too worried about it. I think it's
- 14:35Speaker 3: just one of kind of one of those outings. He'll
- 14:37Speaker 3: move on and from here, but definitely not what you
- 14:40Speaker 3: really wanted to see there the four innings and when
- 14:43Speaker 3: they really needed a big one, it just kind of
- 14:45Speaker 3: got away from him there pretty quick.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's kind of just easy difference. You know,
- 14:52Speaker 4: from last time to this time. He just pounded the
- 14:54Speaker 4: strike zone last time out and he got strike one
- 14:57Speaker 4: where he was behind more often than not. You know,
- 15:00Speaker 4: first pitch strike percentage forty seven percent today. I think
- 15:04Speaker 4: it was sixty five percent in his last start. And
- 15:07Speaker 4: Steve you mentioned just the lack of strikes in general,
- 15:10Speaker 4: and we know that Kyle Bradish he struggled with walks
- 15:14Speaker 4: at certain points.
- 15:15Speaker 5: This year for sure.
- 15:16Speaker 4: But you know, Brad you mentioned that two out walks
- 15:19Speaker 4: walks will kill you, and he had five of them today.
- 15:22Speaker 4: Obviously some shaky defense in between, Colden Kwser playing out
- 15:27Speaker 4: of his mind defensively, but you know, Samuel Bassio was
- 15:31Speaker 4: at first base, Kobe Mayo kind of a shaky game
- 15:34Speaker 4: for him at third base. Just look, give credits to
- 15:37Speaker 4: the Mats like Brad's that's the top scoring offense in baseball,
- 15:41Speaker 4: and for the first couple of games the Orioles did
- 15:43Speaker 4: a good job of really shutting that offense down.
- 15:46Speaker 5: But they woke up today.
- 15:50Speaker 2: So yeah, this surprised me with Bradish.
- 15:52Speaker 1: He came in with eleven and two thirds consecutive scoreless
- 15:56Speaker 1: and by the way he kind of rolled through the
- 15:57Speaker 1: first two innings, it looked like what he you've been
- 16:00Speaker 1: seeing was continuing today against a real good hitting team,
- 16:03Speaker 1: as in that's improve and we've seen it this year
- 16:07Speaker 1: and just kind of lost it.
- 16:09Speaker 2: It's very strange.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Now here's my innings concern, and this has been hanging
- 16:12Speaker 1: over this team since the winner.
- 16:14Speaker 2: We've known it.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Bradish last year through fifty four total innings counting minor
- 16:19Speaker 1: league re hat fifty four, he's now at ninety three.
- 16:23Speaker 1: We're about halfway through the year. So you double that
- 16:25Speaker 1: and see where he's going to end up that if
- 16:28Speaker 1: you want to be pitching in October. In addition to that,
- 16:32Speaker 1: that sounds like too many. I don't know what you think, Brad. Now,
- 16:34Speaker 1: I've heard people say in baseball, if you're a pitcher
- 16:37Speaker 1: who's thrown a lot of innings before and he has,
- 16:41Speaker 1: it's not as crazy as it sounds to go from
- 16:44Speaker 1: fifty four innings to one seventy or something.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Yeah, to me, it's I think it's more of a
- 16:48Speaker 3: performance fatigue than it would be like an injury fatigue
- 16:52Speaker 3: type thing. I think when you, I mean you basically
- 16:55Speaker 3: say over two years, he threw fifty something innings because
- 16:57Speaker 3: the year before it didn't throw any. Last year fifty,
- 17:00Speaker 3: now it's up to ninety something. I think at some
- 17:02Speaker 3: point it just kind of comes more of a performance fatigue,
- 17:05Speaker 3: and the performance kind of lacks because it is a
- 17:08Speaker 3: lot When you take almost two years off from pitching
- 17:11Speaker 3: completely and then now you're ninety something innings. You still
- 17:14Speaker 3: have half the season to go. I feel like it's
- 17:17Speaker 3: a little daunting mentally, and it kind of you're not
- 17:19Speaker 3: thinking about it, but at the same time it's in
- 17:21Speaker 3: the back of your head. I luckily never had injuries
- 17:24Speaker 3: in my career, but I know just talking to some
- 17:25Speaker 3: guys who had gone through it, it's it's more of
- 17:27Speaker 3: a mental hurdle than it is actually physically. You just
- 17:30Speaker 3: kind of you almost feel things creeping up that aren't there.
- 17:34Speaker 3: You kind of feel you're more tired than you actually are,
- 17:37Speaker 3: and so I think it's kind of all these things
- 17:39Speaker 3: kind of culminating as the weather gets warmer in Baltimore.
- 17:42Speaker 3: We know the summer's coming in here pretty hot. So
- 17:44Speaker 3: it's I think it's just kind of a combination of
- 17:47Speaker 3: all those things, and you just got to hope that
- 17:49Speaker 3: you can kind of get over that mental hurdle. But
- 17:50Speaker 3: I just don't know what the number is that teams
- 17:53Speaker 3: look for. I mean, is it one, twenty five, is
- 17:55Speaker 3: at one point fifty? I know Steve, like you said,
- 17:57Speaker 3: he's thrown a lot before. But I'm just curious if
- 17:59Speaker 3: the Orioles, if they have this in their mind coming
- 18:02Speaker 3: here soon.
- 18:04Speaker 4: I know we touched on it at the end of
- 18:06Speaker 4: last episode, the possibility of a six man rotation at
- 18:09Speaker 4: some point, and they're going to have to get creative
- 18:11Speaker 4: that this team has a lot of off days. In July,
- 18:14Speaker 4: they have four off days and that doesn't even count
- 18:16Speaker 4: the All Star breaks, So a lot of downtime to
- 18:19Speaker 4: where you can kind of mess with the schedule, skip
- 18:23Speaker 4: a start however you want to do it. With Kyle
- 18:25Speaker 4: Bradish but guys going a step further, the most amount
- 18:28Speaker 4: of innings he's thrown in his career one hundred and
- 18:31Speaker 4: sixty eight and two thirds. He's on pace to throw
- 18:33Speaker 4: a career high in innings, a career high, which is
- 18:37Speaker 4: pretty crazy coming off to Tommy Johns. So right now,
- 18:42Speaker 4: the Orioles Wednesday starter is TBA.
- 18:45Speaker 5: That would be Trevor Rodgers' term.
- 18:47Speaker 4: A lot of people kind of pointing to Dean Kramer,
- 18:50Speaker 4: who said Michael Ias said was very very close. He
- 18:54Speaker 4: threw six and two thirds in his last rehab start,
- 18:57Speaker 4: had eight strikeouts.
- 18:58Speaker 5: He looked really, really good.
- 19:00Speaker 4: So maybe with the possibility of adding Dean Kramer on Wednesday,
- 19:05Speaker 4: you can somehow mess around with this schedule for Kyle Bradish,
- 19:09Speaker 4: because something's got to be done. I just for him
- 19:12Speaker 4: to throw a career high in innings, I don't know
- 19:15Speaker 4: if that's prudent and.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Steve not th interrupt I also think too, I think
- 19:20Speaker 3: how they play in these next couple weeks mighty take
- 19:22Speaker 3: how they use Bradish going through if you have to
- 19:25Speaker 3: look forward to next year, because he throws about one
- 19:27Speaker 3: hundred and forty this year, I think it's normally about
- 19:30Speaker 3: twenty five percent, you feel okay. Adding on the next
- 19:33Speaker 3: year forty percent, somewhere in that range I always remember hearing,
- 19:36Speaker 3: so he gets about one hundred and forty next year,
- 19:38Speaker 3: you feel way more comfortable if he's able to get
- 19:40Speaker 3: to one eighties. So I think these next couple weeks
- 19:42Speaker 3: might determine where they what they try to do with
- 19:43Speaker 3: Bradish moving forward from here too. So it's it's definitely
- 19:47Speaker 3: there's a lot of layers to the trade deadline here
- 19:50Speaker 3: coming up. I feel like just based on the team's
- 19:51Speaker 3: performance moving forward, yes.
- 19:53Speaker 1: And in the specifics of Bradish's innings for this year,
- 19:57Speaker 1: Olias has said, and this was not Saturday, didn't say yesterday,
- 20:00Speaker 1: but you know, like the in the spring, in the winter,
- 20:03Speaker 1: when this question came up, how much can you pitch
- 20:06Speaker 1: this guy in twenty twenty six, Elias has always said
- 20:09Speaker 1: something like, we have some thoughts on that, we have
- 20:12Speaker 1: some plans on that. He's never revealed specifics so far,
- 20:16Speaker 1: we haven't seen a six man. That doesn't mean we
- 20:18Speaker 1: won't or can't. Trey Gibson could stay in and you
- 20:21Speaker 1: add Dean Kramer and with off days now you spread
- 20:24Speaker 1: people out, or they could skip him. All these a
- 20:27Speaker 1: couple times. We haven't seen this in place yet doesn't
- 20:30Speaker 1: mean it won't be, doesn't mean this is not in
- 20:33Speaker 1: the team's thinking for the season. They got to be
- 20:35Speaker 1: careful with this guy because they won him pitching for
- 20:38Speaker 1: the Orioles at the top of that rotation for years
- 20:41Speaker 1: to come. We are with you today talking about the
- 20:44Speaker 1: Birds of Baltimore on Birdland Territory.
- 20:47Speaker 2: More to do coming right up.

- 22:10Speaker 1: Steve on Baseball dot substack dot com. Writing daily on
- 22:14Speaker 1: the Orioles in the past week or so, big features
- 22:16Speaker 1: on Victor Figueroa, who leads the oil farm in home runs.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Written about Luis de Lyone at length his pitching. I've
- 22:24Speaker 1: written about Josaph for Jerwah a couple times how he
- 22:27Speaker 1: could be the Trey Gibson of this year meeting. He
- 22:30Speaker 1: pitches three levels in a triple A and maybe his
- 22:32Speaker 1: pushing for big league time next year. I got a
- 22:34Speaker 1: ton of minor league coverage coming, ton of draft coverage coming, and.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Of course Oriel coverage as well.
- 22:41Speaker 1: A couple stories on Michael ISAS's presser up there right
- 22:44Speaker 1: now on my substack. So, guys, this was a disappointing weekend,
- 22:49Speaker 1: but I got to say credit to Pete Alonzo. He
- 22:52Speaker 1: gave the team a lead today. This guy's been swinging
- 22:54Speaker 1: it for the Oriols man. Here's the stat on him
- 22:57Speaker 1: since April twenty one, he's among the RBI leaders in
- 23:00Speaker 1: the major leagues. Yes, fifty since that slow start he
- 23:03Speaker 1: had second in MLB. Gave him the lead today. A
- 23:07Speaker 1: couple two run homers today, Haabey and Alonzo. He's doing
- 23:10Speaker 1: everything he can to lead. He just needs some help.
- 23:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, this is exactly what you hope for
- 23:17Speaker 3: when you've signed him. It's just kind of the positive
- 23:22Speaker 3: of having a veteran like Pete in your lineup is
- 23:24Speaker 3: he's going to put up the numbers that you expect
- 23:25Speaker 3: throughout his career, and he's doing just that. He got
- 23:27Speaker 3: off to the slow start, but he's been great since then,
- 23:30Speaker 3: and I think he's added defense that they kind of
- 23:33Speaker 3: was not expected. Has been even more of a plus.
- 23:36Speaker 3: So it's just I think that's what makes it even
- 23:38Speaker 3: more frustrating, is when you signed the big free agent,
- 23:41Speaker 3: he's doing what you expect Homer wise, rbi wise, and
- 23:44Speaker 3: the runs just aren't there, and it's just kind of
- 23:47Speaker 3: you have to look up and down the lineup to
- 23:48Speaker 3: wonder why is it kind of happening that way. They've
- 23:50Speaker 3: tried moving them back to the four spot. He's been
- 23:52Speaker 3: in three spot. It's just kind of playing with all
- 23:55Speaker 3: these different things and it's just not it's just not
- 23:57Speaker 3: adding up. And I think that's what makes it more frustrating.
- 24:00Speaker 3: I think when you look at it because you're like, Okay,
- 24:02Speaker 3: maybe Pete's having a bad year when you look at
- 24:03Speaker 3: this team, how it's happening. But that hasn't been the case.
- 24:05Speaker 3: He's doing exactly what they thought and expected and hoped for,
- 24:09Speaker 3: and he's done. He's done a great job here in Berlin,
- 24:12Speaker 3: and I think the fans are really gonna enjoy watching
- 24:14Speaker 3: him from here through his contract. He's just been great.
- 24:18Speaker 5: Yeah, that's flow start.
- 24:19Speaker 4: From the first couple of weeks feels like an eternity
- 24:22Speaker 4: ago for Pete Alonso Man because if you're looking at
- 24:25Speaker 4: first half MVO, I think it's Pete.
- 24:29Speaker 5: I really do.
- 24:30Speaker 4: I mean, if you want to say Brandon Young for
- 24:32Speaker 4: how consistent he was and or has been, and he
- 24:42Speaker 4: leading the team in home runs our game so far
- 24:45Speaker 4: this season, He's just been everything that you could have
- 24:48Speaker 4: wanted after signing him to that big contract. And that's
- 24:51Speaker 4: everything you know you'd expect that a Pete Alonzo. He's
- 24:55Speaker 4: going to drive in over a hundred runs. He's going
- 24:57Speaker 4: to hit close to forty home runs, if not more
- 25:00Speaker 4: than forty home runs. And like you said, Brad, Pete
- 25:04Speaker 4: coming here and was never known for his glove, but
- 25:07Speaker 4: he's been a really pleasant surprise at first base. Defensively,
- 25:11Speaker 4: he's been really really good this season.
- 25:14Speaker 1: And our fiveal minutes, I want to bring up something
- 25:16Speaker 1: the Oriols did that was really nice last night. I
- 25:18Speaker 1: was glad I was there to see it. I heard
- 25:20Speaker 1: about it before it was coming so I could plan
- 25:23Speaker 1: to watch it.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Was cool.
- 25:25Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys saw it, but I
- 25:26Speaker 1: want to bring it up in a minute here on
- 25:27Speaker 1: Birdland Territory.
- 25:30Speaker 7: Big Bad Morning Show Benny and Haney Inside Access Live
- 25:35Speaker 7: on YouTube weekdays six till six search Baltimore one O

- 25:45Speaker 7: five seven the Fan.
- 25:49Speaker 1: So pregame last night there was a neat, little quick ceremony.
- 25:52Speaker 1: It happened fast. There was this young man named Declan
- 25:56Speaker 1: under Armour as a sponsor for the Orioles and Gunner
- 25:59Speaker 1: Henderson as an under Armor player. So anyway, under Armour
- 26:04Speaker 1: found out this young man, Declin eleven years old, was
- 26:06Speaker 1: born with a condition where his legs are not the
- 26:09Speaker 1: same size. One is bigger than the other and he
- 26:12Speaker 1: has to have special cleats made to even out his
- 26:15Speaker 1: legs when he plays ball. He can't play ball without him,
- 26:19Speaker 1: and it costs money and it takes time to get him.
- 26:21Speaker 1: So under Armour had some special cleats made. Then they
- 26:24Speaker 1: found out, well, baseball is this kid's favorite sport. Gunner
- 26:27Speaker 1: Henderson's his favorite player, So they had Gunner come out
- 26:30Speaker 1: last night present these cleats to Declan with his family
- 26:33Speaker 1: on the field. It was really cool, man, and the
- 26:35Speaker 1: kid just lit up. He was surprised. He didn't know
- 26:38Speaker 1: Gunnar was going to be doing this for me. I
- 26:41Speaker 1: just love to see ball players do that. I know, Brad,
- 26:43Speaker 1: you were asked to do things in your career. When
- 26:46Speaker 1: you play one hundred and sixty two games in travel
- 26:48Speaker 1: like baseball players and I see them again, I'm not
- 26:52Speaker 1: I don't want to oversell it here like I'm kissing
- 26:54Speaker 1: up with these ballplayers. But when you play that schedule
- 26:56Speaker 1: and you still have time because they'll do stuff away
- 26:59Speaker 1: from the feet and then go play the game that night,
- 27:02Speaker 1: that'll help somebody and make a kid smile or raise
- 27:05Speaker 1: money or do something good. And I just thought that
- 27:08Speaker 1: was very cool by the Oreos under Armor and Gunner.
- 27:12Speaker 3: Yeah, that's awesome. Stories like that are great, and I
- 27:14Speaker 3: think it really helps put things into perspective. It really
- 27:17Speaker 3: brings you back, It humbles yourself and you realize you're
- 27:20Speaker 3: not just doing this for the team, You're doing it
- 27:22Speaker 3: for the community. You're doing it for kids like deckling,
- 27:25Speaker 3: you're doing it for the military with they do a
- 27:27Speaker 3: lot of stuff at candy yards for the ex military
- 27:29Speaker 3: members and stuff like that. Just really I always love
- 27:32Speaker 3: getting involved with it because it just kind of brings
- 27:35Speaker 3: you back into I'm gonna play kids game for fun,
- 27:38Speaker 3: and it kind of just like I said, you're doing
- 27:40Speaker 3: it for something bigger than you. You do it for
- 27:42Speaker 3: the entire city and the community of Baltimore. And to me,
- 27:44Speaker 3: that was the reason why I still to this day
- 27:47Speaker 3: have so much high praise for the City of Baltimore
- 27:50Speaker 3: and everything they do, because we don't have a team
- 27:52Speaker 3: and we don't have a job if it's not for
- 27:54Speaker 3: the city and the fans and stuff like that just
- 27:56Speaker 3: kind of like is small examples of stuff that's done
- 27:59Speaker 3: on a daily Like you said, Steve, there's multiple opportunities
- 28:02Speaker 3: to go around the community and get involved, and it's
- 28:04Speaker 3: great to see under Armour give back to the can
- 28:07Speaker 3: have Gunner go out there and present the cleats and
- 28:09Speaker 3: really give him just a thrill out there and stuff
- 28:12Speaker 3: like that. Really it gave me chills as you were
- 28:13Speaker 3: saying that, and it's it's really cool to hear those stories.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Yeah, it's on social media, Tim. I don't know if
- 28:19Speaker 1: you saw it, but go check out the Oriols social media.
- 28:22Speaker 1: I put it in my substack too, and it's it's
- 28:24Speaker 1: a it was just a neat thing. And someone from
- 28:26Speaker 1: the Oriols told me a little ahead of time. They said,
- 28:28Speaker 1: we got something really cool coming up. Make sure you're
- 28:30Speaker 1: watching here in five minutes, this is gonna be really cool.
- 28:34Speaker 1: And you know, it's just it's neat when that comes together.
- 28:37Speaker 1: It didn't take much time out of Gunner's day or whatever.
- 28:40Speaker 1: I know that, but still it took time for people
- 28:43Speaker 1: to put that together to make that kid's day or
- 28:47Speaker 1: year maybe.
- 28:48Speaker 2: So that was pretty cool.
- 28:49Speaker 4: And that's what I was gonna say, Steve, like, that's
- 28:51Speaker 4: that's a lifelong memory for that kid. And he was
- 28:55Speaker 4: interviewed on mass and you know, Rob Long was interviewing
- 28:58Speaker 4: I think it was his dad and declan like it
- 29:01Speaker 4: was really really neat. And obviously this team means so
- 29:05Speaker 4: much to the city, and the Orioles have always been great,
- 29:08Speaker 4: you know in terms of getting out about in the community.
- 29:11Speaker 4: And heck, even going back to Pete Alonso, who we're
- 29:14Speaker 4: just talking about him making that big donation to Barks
- 29:18Speaker 4: the Animal Shelter at the beginning of the season. Like
- 29:21Speaker 4: Adam Jones, I mean, gosh, how much did he do
- 29:24Speaker 4: for the city of Baltimore. Chris Davis as well, for
- 29:27Speaker 4: what children's hospitals He would just stop in, you know,
- 29:30Speaker 4: and there's so much stuff that we don't even know about,
- 29:33Speaker 4: right like that that some players will do and there
- 29:36Speaker 4: doesn't have to be cameras there, and it just makes
- 29:39Speaker 4: such a huge impact on people.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it's cool that they do it.
- 29:45Speaker 1: I'm always blown away by ballplayers as schedule, they keep
- 29:48Speaker 1: as tired they must be, and then you'll you'll get
- 29:51Speaker 1: a press release at ten this morning they went out
- 29:53Speaker 1: and did something for Barks or that, you know, Chris Davis,
- 29:56Speaker 1: all those visits to the children's hospital, and then they're
- 29:59Speaker 1: coming to play that night and o the next day
- 30:00Speaker 1: they got to fly to Minnesota, and it's like, man,
- 30:03Speaker 1: I'm you know, the guy could just be laying in
- 30:05Speaker 1: bed and who would blame him getting rest, But they're
- 30:07Speaker 1: not doing that, and they're realizing their words and actions
- 30:10Speaker 1: had this great impact. And the Oriels do it year
- 30:13Speaker 1: round and the Ravens do it too.
- 30:15Speaker 2: Man.
- 30:15Speaker 1: They just look to do things in their community. They
- 30:17Speaker 1: don't take for granted you're gonna like us, and they
- 30:20Speaker 1: don't do it to make you like us. They just
- 30:22Speaker 1: do it because it's the right thing to do, and
- 30:24Speaker 1: that's the best reason to do things sometimes.
- 30:27Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely, I think, like I said, that's one of
- 30:29Speaker 3: the reasons why I love Baltimore so much, just because
- 30:32Speaker 3: the Orils are involved in the community a lot, and
- 30:34Speaker 3: we used to go to some schools which I went
- 30:35Speaker 3: to college for education and so that was always really
- 30:38Speaker 3: close to like my outside of baseball life, and I
- 30:43Speaker 3: just love the opportunity to go and just talk to
- 30:45Speaker 3: these kids.
- 30:45Speaker 2: And I just.
- 30:46Speaker 3: Imagine if I was in that. I try to put
- 30:48Speaker 3: myself in those kids spot. And if it doesn't matter
- 30:50Speaker 3: who I know, most of the kids I don't know
- 30:52Speaker 3: who I was, But the fact that an Oriel came
- 30:55Speaker 3: to my school talk to me about education or this
- 30:58Speaker 3: or that, it would just it brings me back to
- 31:00Speaker 3: being a fan. And I think that's what some players
- 31:02Speaker 3: forget sometimes, is that you started as a fan and
- 31:05Speaker 3: it could be from meeting one guy that inspired you
- 31:08Speaker 3: to go on to go even if you don't make
- 31:10Speaker 3: the big leagues, you play the minor leagues, or you
- 31:11Speaker 3: get involved with your you know, the Orioles or whatever
- 31:14Speaker 3: team that's in your city. And I think a lot
- 31:16Speaker 3: of times as players, we forget that when we're going
- 31:18Speaker 3: through the season, and those little opportunities to go into
- 31:21Speaker 3: the community really brings you back into bringing you back
- 31:24Speaker 3: to being that little kid. Or the fan again that
- 31:26Speaker 3: saw these guys, and those guys are now one of
- 31:29Speaker 3: your heroes growing up or one of your favorite players
- 31:31Speaker 3: going up. And I think that's it kind of just
- 31:32Speaker 3: really makes a complete three sixty circle when it comes
- 31:35Speaker 3: to those things. And that's why Baltimore the Orioles do
- 31:38Speaker 3: a great job in the community. I feel like.
- 31:41Speaker 1: That day you became those kids' favorite player. They know
- 31:45Speaker 1: they remember you to this day because you did something
- 31:47Speaker 1: that was cool with them. So hey, thanks for the
- 31:51Speaker 1: Oriols for doing that. Enjoyed another one with you, guys,
- 31:54Speaker 1: even though the results were at the great is what
