Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Shane Smith, right hander for the Chicago White Sox, made
- 0:04Speaker 1: his April Era his debut rather on April first. April
- 0:07Speaker 1: Fool's Day wasn't a joke, though, Good to have you
- 0:09Speaker 1: with us on the show. Not only did he make
- 0:12Speaker 1: his debut on April first, he was the second player
- 0:14Speaker 1: in Major League Baseball history to make the All Star
- 0:17Speaker 1: Team in the year following his rule five selections. Shane,
- 0:21Speaker 1: welcome to the show. Tell me about the All Star year.
- 0:24Speaker 1: What was the best part of it for you and
- 0:26Speaker 1: how do you improve upon that next season?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah, hey, guys, thanks for having me. Yeah, this year
- 0:32Speaker 2: was full of you know, a lot of new for me.
- 0:34Speaker 2: And you know, the first, you know, a couple of starts,
- 0:38Speaker 2: you're bewildered and just trying to do your best. Then
- 0:42Speaker 2: you start to learn, like you know, you're talking to
- 0:45Speaker 2: guys learning out you know, what could I do here?
- 0:48Speaker 2: What could I do there? And then you know, you're
- 0:50Speaker 2: just trying to grow. You're just trying to be you know,
- 0:52Speaker 2: soak up as much information as possible. And I think
- 0:55Speaker 2: that goes into the off season of you know, what.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Did I struggle with this year? What did I do
- 1:00Speaker 3: well with?
- 1:00Speaker 2: And you know, try and keep it simple as possible,
- 1:04Speaker 2: but also you make sure you're making strides that prepare
- 1:07Speaker 2: you for the next year. Hey, before we get into
- 1:11Speaker 2: your year in the White Sox and everything, I got
- 1:13Speaker 2: to start back from when you're in high school, you
- 1:16Speaker 2: went to some place called the Governor's Academy, a boarding school.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Can you explain what the heck that is? Because that
- 1:22Speaker 4: sounds like some fancy schmancy place Alano would go like
- 1:26Speaker 4: she was an he I mean some of us went
- 1:28Speaker 4: to public high school, you know, and then some of you,
- 1:30Speaker 4: you other people, the richer people from up north in
- 1:33Speaker 4: the Northeast, we go to the Governor's Academy. What the
- 1:37Speaker 4: heck is that?
- 1:39Speaker 3: Yeah, so I would not put myself in the richie
- 1:42Speaker 3: rich category.
- 1:44Speaker 4: But I mean I didn't go to boarding school. I
- 1:46Speaker 4: don't know to boarding school.
- 1:48Speaker 3: They got financial ad for a reason.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Oh, but uh, it's it's so basically you can be
- 1:54Speaker 2: a day student or you can live there. I lived
- 1:56Speaker 2: about thirty minutes from the school, and it's a preparatory
- 2:00Speaker 2: school for college, so I moved in there at fourteen
- 2:03Speaker 2: my freshman year. There's about four hundred and fifty kids
- 2:07Speaker 2: in the school total, so the grades are pretty small,
- 2:09Speaker 2: and I lived with you know, eighteen freshmen in my dorm,
- 2:13Speaker 2: and uh then your sophomore year, junior and senior year
- 2:17Speaker 2: you live in like a bigger you know, it's not
- 2:18Speaker 2: college or still. You know, the faculty kind of live
- 2:22Speaker 2: within you, and it's a you know, it's a pretty
- 2:25Speaker 2: tight knit community. But I yeah, I enjoyed my time,
- 2:29Speaker 2: and I know it's a it's a foreign concept to
- 2:31Speaker 2: pretty much everybody outside of the Northeast.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Yeah, what was that movie? What was the movie where
- 2:37Speaker 4: they had like that, did you have the Secret Society
- 2:39Speaker 4: and the Poet Society? Yeah, dead pot. But then there
- 2:43Speaker 4: was the other one's Skulls where they had like the
- 2:44Speaker 4: secret Society where they had to know the past code
- 2:47Speaker 4: and then they did all these crazy things that they.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Like, that's Yale. That's Yale. That's a sorry, we're not there.
- 2:56Speaker 4: No, okay, all right, all right, that's fair. That's fair.
- 2:59Speaker 5: Okay of Pepper High School down in down in Orlando,
- 3:02Speaker 5: doctor Pepper High School.
- 3:04Speaker 4: The record, I.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Went to public school. I went to public school, okay,
- 3:08Speaker 1: and I went to a public university. So stop at aj.
- 3:12Speaker 4: All right, now, Shane, how does somebody from the governor
- 3:15Speaker 4: the Gobnor School, Gobnor, I parlay, I parlay end up
- 3:19Speaker 4: at wake Forest. How do you end up like? Does
- 3:21Speaker 4: Does Tom Walters go up there and just look for
- 3:23Speaker 4: people from the Northeast and bring him down because he
- 3:25Speaker 4: has a lot of the Northeast connections.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I think he looks for the Northeast.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I think he looks for the type of player that
- 3:33Speaker 2: you know, when you're not playing baseball year round and
- 3:35Speaker 2: you're you know, playing multiple sports, and you know, when
- 3:38Speaker 2: you get into baseball season, that's your passion. They started
- 3:42Speaker 2: recruiting me my sophomore year roughly, and I committed later
- 3:47Speaker 2: that summer. But they had some family connections with Tom
- 3:50Speaker 2: Walter and and and he gave us a look at
- 3:53Speaker 2: the school and I fell in love with it pretty quickly.
- 3:56Speaker 2: It's a smaller private scheating. It's the smallest Power five
- 3:59Speaker 2: or Power four now, so it was similar to my
- 4:02Speaker 2: high school. But you know, everything else stood up. You know,
- 4:04Speaker 2: their facilities are incredible campus, isn't those?
- 4:07Speaker 4: I love those private you know, small, I mean, gosh,
- 4:11Speaker 4: it must be nice. Anyways, continue man.
- 4:13Speaker 1: He's never going to come back on the show.
- 4:15Speaker 4: We see him alone. I love it. I'm jealous. I
- 4:19Speaker 4: wish that I would have had that growing up. Instead,
- 4:21Speaker 4: I had to go to Doctor Phillips High School, Like
- 4:23Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 4:24Speaker 3: So yeah, I mean I was.
- 4:25Speaker 2: I was in the minority in every place I went,
- 4:29Speaker 2: so you know, I was okay with that.
- 4:32Speaker 3: But yeah, I ended up Awake and absolutely loved it.
- 4:35Speaker 2: My college career wasn't what I was expecting, just with
- 4:38Speaker 2: injuries and COVID and all that. But you know, nothing
- 4:42Speaker 2: but good things to say about Tom Walter and his
- 4:44Speaker 2: staff there.
- 4:46Speaker 1: And you played with Ret Louder, but you missed Nick
- 4:48Speaker 1: Kurtz by a year. Tell me what you've seen from
- 4:51Speaker 1: those two guys obviously out of wake Forest that impresses
- 4:55Speaker 1: you the most about why they can be so successful
- 4:57Speaker 1: at the big league level, like yourself.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Yeah, Rhett.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Rhett took the Sunday job after I blew out, after
- 5:04Speaker 2: I had TJ and and he stepped in it as
- 5:07Speaker 2: a freshman and you know, really commanded from an early
- 5:10Speaker 2: early time on from there, and he grew a ton,
- 5:13Speaker 2: started throwing you know, more strikes and throwing a little
- 5:16Speaker 2: bit harder. But he had it, you know, pretty damn
- 5:18Speaker 2: close when he when he showed up, so I hope
- 5:21Speaker 2: he's you know, getting healthier and feeling better and and
- 5:23Speaker 2: and ready to go next year because he's gonna do well.
- 5:26Speaker 3: And and Kurtz is just ridiculous.
- 5:29Speaker 2: I remember hearing stories and seeing a big left handed
- 5:31Speaker 2: bat in Winston and uh, they.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Huld do really well.
- 5:35Speaker 2: And then and he just absolutely killed it when he
- 5:37Speaker 2: came up. So super happy for him. I talked to
- 5:40Speaker 2: him a little bit when we went to Sacramento and
- 5:42Speaker 2: you know, so keep it up. Wished him luck and uh,
- 5:45Speaker 2: you know, maybe we'll catch up soon. But yeah, super
- 5:47Speaker 2: happy for those guys.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Do you know what today is, Shane? Do you know
- 5:51Speaker 5: what is happening in baseball today?
- 5:57Speaker 3: Forty man roster's got to be set today? Real five?
- 6:00Speaker 3: Is the rule five today? No way?
- 6:01Speaker 4: So the rule five so kind of ironical in the
- 6:05Speaker 4: winter meetings Real five?
- 6:08Speaker 5: No, no, no. But the guys who the guys who know
- 6:11Speaker 5: they're going to be available for the rule five, So
- 6:12Speaker 5: it's kind of ironic, you prob do you remember this day?
- 6:16Speaker 5: Obviously it's not this exact day last year when the
- 6:20Speaker 5: Brewers were like, nah, we're not going to protect you.
- 6:25Speaker 2: I I didn't really know it was my rule five
- 6:29Speaker 2: year until probably two or three days before the draft.
- 6:32Speaker 2: So when I wasn't protected, I didn't really think anything
- 6:35Speaker 2: of it. And then uh, once you know, I got
- 6:39Speaker 2: some phone calls pretty much right before the Rule five
- 6:42Speaker 2: and they said, hey, you're you're eligible, and then it's
- 6:44Speaker 2: kind of like, oh, crap, you know this is you know,
- 6:47Speaker 2: this is something that could happen, which is which was
- 6:49Speaker 2: wild Okay.
- 6:51Speaker 5: So so it wasn't like it wasn't a knock to
- 6:53Speaker 5: your ego because I remember being in the minor leagues
- 6:55Speaker 5: and like guys were like, oh, yeah, this is his
- 6:57Speaker 5: protection year. There's definitely you know, it's kind of a
- 6:59Speaker 5: plan form year type of thing. So you didn't really
- 7:02Speaker 5: think about that until you got phone calls and then
- 7:06Speaker 5: did you even know what the Rule five draft was?
- 7:11Speaker 3: I knew.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I knew it gave me a better opportunity than you know,
- 7:15Speaker 2: sitting in double air triple at the next year with Milwaukee,
- 7:19Speaker 2: I thought, you get added to the forty men, and
- 7:20Speaker 2: then you kind of just you know, you're a big
- 7:23Speaker 2: league spring training and then maybe you make the team,
- 7:24Speaker 2: but you're on the forty man. And then I learned
- 7:27Speaker 2: that if all things go well, you're in the big
- 7:29Speaker 2: leagues and uh, you know, give you your best shot.
- 7:33Speaker 2: But yeah, when I was told that it was twenty
- 7:35Speaker 2: six and uh, you know spring training is my shot,
- 7:39Speaker 2: then it's kind of like, Okay, you know, it's the
- 7:41Speaker 2: opportunity I've always wanted and now it's time to run
- 7:43Speaker 2: with it.
- 7:44Speaker 5: Did you believe that you were actually going to get
- 7:46Speaker 5: an opportunity when you went to the White Sox because
- 7:49Speaker 5: we talked I think we talked to you in spring
- 7:50Speaker 5: training and like rule five, guys, they get told one thing,
- 7:56Speaker 5: but the reality is it's like, hey, you know, we
- 7:58Speaker 5: just love to have you in the organization. This first
- 8:01Speaker 5: year is a whatever thing. Did you truly believe when
- 8:04Speaker 5: they told you that you made the team that you're like,
- 8:07Speaker 5: I'm gonna be here the whole year. I'm going to
- 8:09Speaker 5: be an All Star.
- 8:13Speaker 2: I I think I'd do a disservice to myself if
- 8:16Speaker 2: I didn't think that I could do everything that I
- 8:19Speaker 2: wanted to do.
- 8:21Speaker 3: And no arrogance or cockiness.
- 8:23Speaker 2: I think when I get that opportunity, it was okay,
- 8:27Speaker 2: am I good enough to be here? And then I
- 8:29Speaker 2: think I showed myself and others that I'm good enough
- 8:31Speaker 2: to be here. And then it was kind of like, Okay,
- 8:33Speaker 2: now it's you know, now it's time to go the
- 8:35Speaker 2: novelty of like, hey, we just made the team and
- 8:38Speaker 2: you know, congratulations, like that's that's incredible, and I you know,
- 8:42Speaker 2: I cried that day with my family. But once you
- 8:44Speaker 2: kind of get over that first debut and second second
- 8:47Speaker 2: outing and third outing, now it's like, okay, let's you know,
- 8:49Speaker 2: let's do this.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Let's let's make this work. Shane.
- 8:54Speaker 4: You make the team first of all rule five and
- 8:56Speaker 4: by the way, I'm glad you did because you had
- 8:58Speaker 4: a really nature. Then you make the All Star Team,
- 9:00Speaker 4: and I want to thank you. You didn't big league me
- 9:02Speaker 4: on the red carpet. You came over and said hi,
- 9:03Speaker 4: So thank you. Thank you for doing that. When I
- 9:06Speaker 4: saw you in the red carbet and know you're with
- 9:07Speaker 4: your family and everybody, so thank you for not big
- 9:09Speaker 4: league in me. I appreciate that. What was it like
- 9:12Speaker 4: when you figured out the call you made the All
- 9:14Speaker 4: Star Team? Because forget like Rule five awesome, made the
- 9:17Speaker 4: team awesome, But then you made it to the highest level,
- 9:20Speaker 4: which is then the All Star Game? So what was
- 9:22Speaker 4: that call?
- 9:23Speaker 2: Like? It was a it was a whirlwind I really
- 9:28Speaker 2: didn't think that I was going to get the nod there.
- 9:31Speaker 3: I think I put together a pretty.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Strong, you know, ten twelve starts, and then you know,
- 9:36Speaker 2: the league adjusted to me and I had I had
- 9:38Speaker 2: a few you know, five six tough starts, and that
- 9:41Speaker 2: was kind of around that time and Venable came into
- 9:45Speaker 2: the the Colorado Rockies locker room I had to start
- 9:49Speaker 2: actually later that day, and you know, he's going through it,
- 9:53Speaker 2: and you know, White Sox rookie pitcher, and I was like, okay,
- 9:58Speaker 2: you know, it's got to be me here and overcome
- 10:03Speaker 2: with emotion, you know, try to say thank you to
- 10:06Speaker 2: the staff and my teammates around me, because you know,
- 10:10Speaker 2: that's how you get through those tough days, right, Like
- 10:12Speaker 2: your teammates are guys who can bounce ideas off of
- 10:14Speaker 2: and and you know, hey.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I'm struggling here. What do you got? You know? And
- 10:18Speaker 3: and I think that's.
- 10:20Speaker 2: A huge testament to the guys in this clubhouse that
- 10:22Speaker 2: you know, boost me up and that I can succeed.
- 10:24Speaker 2: So and then once you get to Atlanta, it's two
- 10:28Speaker 2: days of craziness and you know, trying to say hell
- 10:32Speaker 2: load everybody and pick people's brains and see what you
- 10:35Speaker 2: can get. Super thankful my family was there, and you know,
- 10:38Speaker 2: definitely something we'll we'll think about forever.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Shane, you had more starts under your belt than Jacob
- 10:44Speaker 1: Izarowski did, but he made the All Star team, and
- 10:47Speaker 1: a lot of folks were saying, how can this kid
- 10:49Speaker 1: who has, you know, five minutes in the big leagues
- 10:51Speaker 1: take a spot. What a lot of people didn't know
- 10:53Speaker 1: is a lot of pitchers ahead of him didn't want
- 10:55Speaker 1: to go or elected not to go. Their team wouldn't
- 10:57Speaker 1: let him pitch, but he was still very deserving on
- 11:00Speaker 1: the amount of starts that he had at the time.
- 11:02Speaker 1: How did you deal with that firestorm of him just
- 11:05Speaker 1: your reaction to it, because you kind of were in
- 11:07Speaker 1: a similar situation, even though you had been up longer
- 11:10Speaker 1: and had more starts. What was that What was your
- 11:12Speaker 1: reaction to that whole situation for him?
- 11:16Speaker 3: I mean, I played with miz for two years, so
- 11:18Speaker 3: I knew him pretty well.
- 11:22Speaker 2: I think in that situation where you know you have
- 11:25Speaker 2: the top prospect who's doing really well and is you know,
- 11:29Speaker 2: electrifying to watch, I think that's good for the game,
- 11:33Speaker 2: I think. And also when you have you know, I
- 11:36Speaker 2: think it was like twelve or thirteen guys that say
- 11:38Speaker 2: no to going out there. I think at that point,
- 11:42Speaker 2: you know, what do you do for that that's best
- 11:44Speaker 2: for the game. And I think miz was was in
- 11:46Speaker 2: that category of let's get someone really exciting who's done
- 11:50Speaker 2: well in a short period of time.
- 11:54Speaker 3: But I think it's really cool.
- 11:55Speaker 2: To see, you know, I think there is some merit
- 11:57Speaker 2: to you know, maybe having fifteen to twenty starts in
- 12:01Speaker 2: the big leagues before you get something like that.
- 12:03Speaker 3: But obviously, you.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Know I had fourteen, right, So you know, when do
- 12:07Speaker 2: you draw that line? I'm not sure, but I think
- 12:09Speaker 2: for me is that, you know, really happy for him,
- 12:11Speaker 2: and I'm glad he threw well pretty well in the playoffs.
- 12:13Speaker 2: I think that was really cool. And you know, is
- 12:17Speaker 2: it is it a baseball purist look? I don't think so.
- 12:20Speaker 2: But I think it's also really exciting for the game.
- 12:22Speaker 2: And you know, it's great to see some of the
- 12:25Speaker 2: best arms and most electric eying, electrifying arms throw In Atlanta.
- 12:31Speaker 5: You said you had a bunch of people to talk to,
- 12:33Speaker 5: you know, pick brains of people. Who was the coolest
- 12:36Speaker 5: person you met at the All Star Game that you
- 12:38Speaker 5: were like I can't believe I just said hi to
- 12:40Speaker 5: that person.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Met Yeah, yeah, you were out there. I was. I
- 12:46Speaker 3: was definitely starts struggling. I was saying hello to you. Yeah.
- 12:50Speaker 2: I think I wanted to, you know, introduce myself to
- 12:53Speaker 2: everybody and say, hey man, it's nice to meet you.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Really cool to see you. And then I think, you know,
- 12:58Speaker 3: I was.
- 12:59Speaker 2: I was in kind of the ale central corner of
- 13:01Speaker 2: the locker room. So I talked to I talked to
- 13:04Speaker 2: some of the hitters from Detroit and in Kansas City,
- 13:07Speaker 2: talked to Chris Bubitch a lot Scooble was right next
- 13:11Speaker 2: to me, Derek, so I obviously asked him a few questions,
- 13:15Speaker 2: trying to be you know, cordial about it and everything.
- 13:17Speaker 2: But Garret Crochet was another guy who was with the
- 13:20Speaker 2: White Sox that you know, have some familiar connections, so
- 13:23Speaker 2: talk to him a little bit. But you know, Aaron
- 13:26Speaker 2: Judge saying what's up to me? And you know guys
- 13:29Speaker 2: like that, that's you've been watching him for so long.
- 13:31Speaker 2: And then you know, I faced New York in my
- 13:34Speaker 2: last two starts, and it's like this guy's a good guy.
- 13:35Speaker 2: But you know, obviously you want to do well against him.
- 13:39Speaker 2: But yeah, just trying to say a load of people
- 13:40Speaker 2: and you know, if they're open to a conversation.
- 13:41Speaker 3: I was. I was trying to have it.
- 13:44Speaker 4: That's good, that's smart. That's a good way to go
- 13:46Speaker 4: into the All Star Game and enjoy, enjoy every second
- 13:49Speaker 4: of it because it's it's meant to be fun.
- 13:51Speaker 3: All right.
- 13:52Speaker 4: So you went into the year and last year you
- 13:54Speaker 4: had Ethan Katz is your pitching coach. This year you
- 13:56Speaker 4: have a whole new pitching coaching.
- 13:57Speaker 5: Staff he had.
- 13:58Speaker 4: They reached out to you. Have you talked to the
- 14:00Speaker 4: new staff for the White Sox and have they talked
- 14:02Speaker 4: about things they want you to go into spring training
- 14:05Speaker 4: working on to make yourself even better because you had
- 14:08Speaker 4: a really good year.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:11Speaker 2: So I talked to Zach, you know, twice now. I
- 14:14Speaker 2: actually texted me earlier today and just kind of checking in. Yeah,
- 14:19Speaker 2: I had a good conversation with him. He's trying to
- 14:21Speaker 2: get to know me and I'm trying to get to
- 14:22Speaker 2: know him. So, you know, just telling them what I'm
- 14:25Speaker 2: thinking in terms of, you know, what are the things
- 14:28Speaker 2: that I think that would be, you know, to help
- 14:31Speaker 2: me make that next jump that I'm trying to do.
- 14:33Speaker 2: And trying to make and I think he's doing a
- 14:36Speaker 2: really good job of listening. And also, you know, he
- 14:39Speaker 2: doesn't know me yet. He just kind of knows the
- 14:40Speaker 2: numbers and what it looks like on paper. And I
- 14:44Speaker 2: think as we get to know each other more, he's
- 14:46Speaker 2: gonna be like, Hey, Shane, I think you really can
- 14:48Speaker 2: you know, make a jump with getting guys out with
- 14:50Speaker 2: two strikes or first pitch strikes. You know, I definitely
- 14:53Speaker 2: have to throw, you know, cut down on a walks
- 14:55Speaker 2: this year. But yeah, I think I'm gonna meet with
- 14:58Speaker 2: him right after Thanksgiving and really kind of get into
- 15:00Speaker 2: the nitty gritty of you know, what's what's gonna help me,
- 15:03Speaker 2: what's going to be the most bang for our buck
- 15:04Speaker 2: that's you know, simple and effective for next year.
- 15:08Speaker 4: Hey, also, I want to I wanted to ask you
- 15:11Speaker 4: this that you have two rookie catchers, who did you
- 15:13Speaker 4: like throwing two more? Keel or Kirot. I'll put you
- 15:19Speaker 4: on the spot.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Here, No, I think. I think.
- 15:24Speaker 2: I think when you have two rookie guys, they're they're
- 15:26Speaker 2: still trying to figure themselves out in dealing with the
- 15:29Speaker 2: staff of you know, fifteen sixteen pitchers and to not
- 15:33Speaker 2: bring one picture over to the to another is a
- 15:36Speaker 2: hard thing to do, but like, hey, this guy does this,
- 15:38Speaker 2: but everybody throws differently and everybody's stuff is different, so
- 15:41Speaker 2: you kind of have to attack differently. And I think
- 15:44Speaker 2: Caro had had Matt Feist early on that helped him
- 15:47Speaker 2: out of the gate for Fist to give him scouting
- 15:49Speaker 2: reports and and this is how we break down, and
- 15:52Speaker 2: this is how we want to look at guys. And
- 15:53Speaker 2: then Teal shows up and is and it's just him
- 15:55Speaker 2: and Carroll just trying to figure it out on the fly.
- 15:58Speaker 2: So it took a lot of the pictures going to
- 16:01Speaker 2: Teal and saying, hey man, this is this is what
- 16:02Speaker 2: we're trying to do. And and he picked it up
- 16:05Speaker 2: right away. You know, if if you didn't like something,
- 16:08Speaker 2: you shake it. And he's he's all over it, and
- 16:10Speaker 2: he's trying to learn more about you know, why are
- 16:12Speaker 2: we shaking there? I think we saw this and then
- 16:15Speaker 2: we're having an open conversation. Right, everybody wants to succeed
- 16:17Speaker 2: and everybody wants to do well, and it's just kind
- 16:20Speaker 2: of how do we get there? So I think, you know,
- 16:23Speaker 2: Caroen might have had the head start with theis kind
- 16:25Speaker 2: of learning him the ropes. But Teal and Carow, you know,
- 16:27Speaker 2: bounced ideas off each other and then you know, relied
- 16:30Speaker 2: heavily on the pictures to kind of, you know, guide
- 16:32Speaker 2: in one way or another.
- 16:35Speaker 5: A right trying to meld two things that you said together.
- 16:38Speaker 5: You're talking about catchers and you're talking about meeting somebody
- 16:41Speaker 5: the All Star Game. I got to ask you who
- 16:44Speaker 5: should have won the MVP. You were kind of starstruck
- 16:47Speaker 5: by Judge, you said, But you know what, you didn't
- 16:50Speaker 5: say anything about cal You were like, hey, whatever, man,
- 16:53Speaker 5: I guess that guy is not going to catch me
- 16:54Speaker 5: in the All Star Games? So so who should have
- 16:56Speaker 5: won the MVP? Because it was close?
- 16:59Speaker 3: Yeah, well close. I think.
- 17:03Speaker 2: I think the Most Valuable Player is an interesting award
- 17:07Speaker 2: because when you look at a catcher, who it's, you know,
- 17:09Speaker 2: sixty one bombs or sixty bombs and you know it's
- 17:13Speaker 2: one of the best defensive catchers in the game this
- 17:15Speaker 2: year and is really good behind the plate, I think
- 17:17Speaker 2: that's it's pretty hard to put a value on that.
- 17:21Speaker 2: But then you have judge, who it's you know, three
- 17:23Speaker 2: thirty with fifty five or fifty three with an eleven
- 17:26Speaker 2: hundred ops, and it's like, Okay, that guy clearly is
- 17:29Speaker 2: the staple in that lineup and propels them into a
- 17:32Speaker 2: divisional round. I think I think it would have been
- 17:37Speaker 2: really cool to see to see cal win it, to
- 17:39Speaker 2: see a Catcher win MVP with that amount of bombs
- 17:41Speaker 2: and you know, catching five days a week, six days
- 17:44Speaker 2: a week and showing up for his team. I think
- 17:47Speaker 2: it's really hard to argue what the offensive numbers of
- 17:49Speaker 2: Judge were.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Spoken like a true I was gonna say. Aj spoken
- 17:56Speaker 1: like I know, I'm gonna let you talk, but it's
- 17:58Speaker 1: very diplomatic. I have I see a future in politics
- 18:01Speaker 1: for you. Shane Smith.
- 18:02Speaker 4: Listen, Shane Murkins. Judge Murkin voted for Judge, so therefore
- 18:07Speaker 4: it was Raleigh that's it. And it was Raly and
- 18:09Speaker 4: plus you Murkin won't come on the show. You will,
- 18:12Speaker 4: so you should have said, Raleigh, Okay, that's that's I did.
- 18:17Speaker 4: I know, I know, but you through Judge little love
- 18:20Speaker 4: which listen, he won. He great, he deserved it. He
- 18:21Speaker 4: had a great year.
- 18:22Speaker 2: But I mean he did Yeah, he won the MVP,
- 18:24Speaker 2: so he can't really discredit everything he does.
- 18:26Speaker 4: We're not just crediting. We love Aaron judge, we're not
- 18:28Speaker 4: discrediting him at all. We're not discrediting him at all.
- 18:31Speaker 3: I get it. I get it.
- 18:32Speaker 4: You still have to face him, so you want to.
- 18:34Speaker 4: You don't want to mad at you when you have
- 18:35Speaker 4: to face him down. But yeah, but okay, So I
- 18:40Speaker 4: have two things and then we gotta let you go. One,
- 18:42Speaker 4: tell col Some Montgomery to text me back. Okay, I've
- 18:45Speaker 4: texted him twice now he has. He's ghosted me. So
- 18:47Speaker 4: I'm just gonna keep calling him out and I'm just
- 18:49Speaker 4: gonna start texting him every day until he responds. So
- 18:52Speaker 4: Teal text me back. You're great about it all. There
- 18:55Speaker 4: are a lot of the White Sox guys. But Cools Montgomery, listen,
- 18:58Speaker 4: if you're ware my number, to text me back. All right,
- 19:01Speaker 4: that's it. I mean, tell Colson. Maybe I have the
- 19:04Speaker 4: wrong number. I don't know, but if I do, I'm sorry.
- 19:07Speaker 4: But if not, tell them to text me back. And
- 19:10Speaker 4: then the next thing I want to know is you
- 19:12Speaker 4: have two sisters, right, you have two sisters?
- 19:14Speaker 3: I do Do.
- 19:16Speaker 4: You ever tell them not to tweet? Because it's hilarious
- 19:18Speaker 4: when they start, people say something about you and then
- 19:21Speaker 4: they write like have you ever gone to your sister
- 19:23Speaker 4: and said, look, sis, I love you to death, but
- 19:26Speaker 4: can we not get in twitter battles today? Just let
- 19:28Speaker 4: me pitch and pitch good because you had a great year.
- 19:30Speaker 4: And I always then i'd fall and then your sister
- 19:32Speaker 4: would pop up on my feet and I would just
- 19:34Speaker 4: be like, this is what I came for. This is
- 19:36Speaker 4: what's gonna make my day right here.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, No, there's definitely been some conversations. Uh, I
- 19:43Speaker 2: think I think I think early on it was kind
- 19:45Speaker 2: of like, hey, you know, people are gonna have things
- 19:48Speaker 2: to say that aren't always positive, Like you really got
- 19:50Speaker 2: to stay away from it, just you know post hey
- 19:54Speaker 2: my brother's pitching today, or hey, good job to my brother,
- 19:57Speaker 2: and you know, I can't be mad at that. But
- 19:59Speaker 2: I think, you know, there I've seen some instancides where
- 20:03Speaker 2: it's like, why are you even entertaining this.
- 20:05Speaker 3: This guy that's saying, oh, you know, Shane Smith sucks,
- 20:08Speaker 3: like just let it go.
- 20:10Speaker 2: But I'm the little brother, and I think that's got
- 20:13Speaker 2: something to do with it. So I think if they
- 20:16Speaker 2: hear that they're you know, getting noticed by you guys,
- 20:18Speaker 2: they'd be like, either we keep it up or we
- 20:20Speaker 2: probably shut it down. But Yeah, there's been some, but
- 20:24Speaker 2: you know they're also they're adults and they can live
- 20:27Speaker 2: their life as.
- 20:27Speaker 3: Long as they're you know, not threatening anybody. I think
- 20:30Speaker 3: it's okay.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Social media can be the devil or you love it when.
- 20:37Speaker 4: Sisters they're standing up for little brother. I mean, by
- 20:41Speaker 4: the way, if they say Shane Smith sucks, all you
- 20:42Speaker 4: got to do is say All Star Game under four
- 20:45Speaker 4: e r A. In my first year in the big leagues.
- 20:47Speaker 4: I don't think I suck that bad. I think I
- 20:48Speaker 4: had a pretty damn good year.
- 20:51Speaker 2: I'll let them, you know, respond to the people who
- 20:53Speaker 2: say that, that's not my job.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Yeah, Shane, just stay off of social media. Let your
- 20:57Speaker 1: sisters take care of it. You just keep doing what
- 20:59Speaker 1: you're doing. Make the All Star team again. We appreciate
- 21:01Speaker 1: you being here, man. Have a good offseason. Be well,
- 21:03Speaker 1: stay safe. When do you when do you pick up
- 21:05Speaker 1: a baseball or have you done that already?
- 21:08Speaker 2: I picked one up last week, so uh, you know
- 21:10Speaker 2: we're getting the rust off and getting back into it now.
- 21:14Speaker 4: Very good.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Well, good luck to you. Appreciate you taking the time.
- 21:18Speaker 3: AJ is knocking Stu.
- 21:20Speaker 4: I've just picked one up for the first time in
- 21:21Speaker 4: a long time.
- 21:24Speaker 3: All right, guys appreciate it.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Take care,
