- 0:14Change is inevitable. And you know, change can
- 0:17be a great thing. But there are times when making
- 0:21a change in your life, your work, or your relationships
- 0:24can bring devastating consequences. Today on
- 0:27Living on the Edge, we're going to talk about
- 0:29how to know when it's time to move on and how
- 0:33to know when you need to stay right where you're
- 0:37at. Stay with me. I'm Dave Drewing, and this
- 0:41is Living on the Edge with Chip Ingram. When
- 0:44life gets hard, it's easy to believe that a new
- 0:47job, a new church, or even a new spouse would
- 0:50finally make everything better. Chip calls it
- 0:52the if -only game, and today he exposes the false
- 0:56premise hiding underneath it. It's part of our
- 0:58series, Building Authentic Community, How to
- 1:01Lift Up Those You Love. Now let's join Chip for
- 1:04the start of a message titled, Why a Change in
- 1:07Scenery Rarely Improves the View. Under pressure.
- 1:11I mean, when life gets difficult, when it gets
- 1:13painful, and we all tend to play what I call
- 1:16the if -only game. And the if -only game goes
- 1:20like this, and it's the fifth lie. The lie is
- 1:24that the grass is greener on the other side of
- 1:27the fence mentality. When things get hard and
- 1:30when they get difficult, somehow we think if
- 1:33I were in a different situation, if only this
- 1:35happened or that happened, then everything would
- 1:38be just absolutely good. It's just, it's my circumstance.
- 1:42Here's the false premise. God wants me to be
- 1:46happy. Now, there's a lot of truth in that, so
- 1:49don't get too shaken up. God does want to bless
- 1:52us. He does want to give us a full life. But
- 1:55when I say God wants me to be happy, I mean he
- 1:58wants me to feel happy. He wants me to be emotionally
- 2:01satisfied. He wants everything to be going right
- 2:04all the time so that I'm a happy camper. So I'm
- 2:07fulfilled. So life is going my way. So I'm successful.
- 2:12So life is good. I believe that's a false premise.
- 2:17Because I've got passages that say in the world,
- 2:19you will have tribulation. But be of good cheer,
- 2:23I've overcome the world. I've got passages to
- 2:25say, why are you surprised at the fiery trial
- 2:27that you're undergoing? Because it's predictable
- 2:30and certain. I have passages to say that every
- 2:32single person that longs and wants to live a
- 2:35godly life will experience persecution. So I
- 2:41think we've kind of eliminated some of those
- 2:42passages in our American view of the New Testament
- 2:45and the Old Testament. And we have come to believe
- 2:48that God wants personal fulfillment and happiness
- 2:52and good emotions like about 99 % of the time.
- 2:55So I put this in a little axiom here. Major premise,
- 2:59God wants me to be happy. And that's his highest
- 3:01goal for my life. That's what he really wants.
- 3:04Minor premise, my situation, my job, my marriage,
- 3:08my school, my relationships are so painful and
- 3:11stressful that... Conclusion, this situation
- 3:14or relationship can't be God's will for my life.
- 3:19That is, I mean, that is day after day after
- 3:23day after day being believed and acted on, at
- 3:26least in America. I was doing a radio call -in
- 3:30program and they talk a little bit and then people
- 3:33call from around the country. So this was a Chicago
- 3:35listener and this lady calls in. She goes, well,
- 3:38you know, I just really want you to know that...
- 3:41I know God really wants me to be happy and I
- 3:45am just miserable in my marriage and so I'm going
- 3:47to be divorcing my husband and that's okay, isn't
- 3:51it? And I said, well, ma 'am, that's a very complex
- 3:54situation and I don't know all the issues, but
- 3:56do you have biblical grounds for divorce? She
- 3:59goes, well, what do you mean? I said, well, has
- 4:00he been sexually unfaithful? Is he an unbeliever
- 4:04that maybe you married before you were a Christian
- 4:06and that he has abandoned you? I mean, do you
- 4:10have biblical grounds for divorce? And she goes,
- 4:13well, no, he's just not very considerate. He's
- 4:16just not very nice. I don't feel fulfilled. I
- 4:20mean, I'm missing out on life. I'm miserable.
- 4:24I just don't like him anymore. Then she said
- 4:27this, but I know God wants me to be happy. Therefore,
- 4:32I know this can't be his will. Now that's a graphic
- 4:38one, but I would challenge you and I would challenge
- 4:41me to ask yourself, where do you play that if
- 4:44only game? The truth is, if you'll look in your
- 4:46notes, is that running from adversity and conflict
- 4:51in relationships does not solve problems, but
- 4:54it compounds them. And all of us at certain times
- 4:58in our life have run from adversity, have run
- 5:01from conflict and difficulty. And we could probably
- 5:04tell a lot of stories of how, you know what,
- 5:06running away from it did not solve it. It just
- 5:08compounded it. Patience and perseverance are
- 5:12the keys to relational transformation. If you'll
- 5:15look in your notes, I put exactly what God would
- 5:17say to people in a very difficult situation of
- 5:22conflict and adversity. And here's what he says
- 5:26to them, beginning in verse 7 of chapter 5 of
- 5:29the book of James. Be patient then, brothers.
- 5:31Well, how long? Until the Lord's coming. See
- 5:36how the farmer waits for the land to yield its
- 5:38valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn
- 5:40and the spring rains? You too. Be patient and
- 5:44stand firm. Well, why? Because the Lord's coming
- 5:48is near. Well, what kind of attitude should we
- 5:51have while we're waiting? Verse nine, don't grumble
- 5:54against each other, brothers, or you'll be judged.
- 5:57The judge is standing at the door. Brothers,
- 6:01as an example of patience in the face of suffering,
- 6:04take the prophets who spoke in the name of the
- 6:06Lord. As you know, we consider blessed those
- 6:10who persevere. You have heard of Job's perseverance
- 6:14and you've seen what the Lord finally brought
- 6:15about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
- 6:21Above all, my brothers, do not swear, not by
- 6:26heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your
- 6:30yes be yes and your no, no, or you'll be condemned.
- 6:33In other words, keep your word. There are four
- 6:35commands in this passage. As I give them to you,
- 6:39I want you to underline the commands. Command
- 6:41number one, be patient. That's in verse seven.
- 6:46Command number two is in verse eight. Be patient
- 6:50and stand firm. So he repeats the same command.
- 6:54Command number three, don't grumble. Underline
- 6:58that. Command number four is do not swear. Do
- 7:04not swear. So he's made it very, very clear.
- 7:07He understands their situation. It's as bad or
- 7:10literally worse than anyone's difficult conflict
- 7:13or adversity. And he says to them very clearly,
- 7:16be patient, be patient and stand firm. Do not
- 7:20grumble and do not swear. There's four commands.
- 7:23It's obvious it's about patience, perseverance,
- 7:26hanging in there, not giving up, hanging tough,
- 7:29enduring. But he's gonna give us three snapshots.
- 7:32There's three pictures. Put a box around the
- 7:35word farmer. Because he's gonna use it as an
- 7:39example. He's gonna say, there's a lesson to
- 7:40be learned from the farmer. Skip down and put
- 7:43a box around the word prophet. He says, there's
- 7:46a lesson that we can learn from the prophets.
- 7:50And then finally put a box around the word Job
- 7:54or Job's. There's a lesson to be learned from
- 7:57him. And if you had some time to look at those
- 8:01four commands, and as you see those words that
- 8:04are circled, what you're gonna learn. is that
- 8:08God has a message to people who play the if -only
- 8:12game. And out of this, I think, are three very,
- 8:16very clear commands for us in terms of how do
- 8:20we make it through difficult times. The first
- 8:24point I see out of this passage in verses seven
- 8:26to nine is that we are commanded to be patient
- 8:29even when circumstances are beyond our control.
- 8:33He says, don't give up, don't give in because
- 8:36God is in control, but they're out of your control.
- 8:39Look, it says, be patient, brothers, until the
- 8:41Lord's coming. And then this is the lesson of
- 8:43the farmer. See how the farmer waits for the
- 8:47land to yield its valuable crop and how patient
- 8:49he is for autumn and spring rains. How much control
- 8:52does the farmer have about how much sunlight
- 8:55and how much rain? Zero. So he says, take a lesson
- 8:59from the farmer. What does the farmer do? He
- 9:02waits for the land. He waits for the process.
- 9:06He lets the land do its work, its valuable crop.
- 9:10He's patient. He realizes, you know what? Okay.
- 9:13You know what? It's autumn now and things are
- 9:16brown. But guess what? Spring is coming. Spring
- 9:19is coming. You need to persevere. You need to
- 9:23hang in there. And then by the way, you need
- 9:26to hang in there with the right attitude. Notice
- 9:28what it says. Second command, be patient and
- 9:31stand firm again because the Lord's coming is
- 9:34near. Seasons have a beginning and seasons have
- 9:37an end, don't they? Whatever you're experiencing
- 9:40that you think, I can't take it, I can't take
- 9:42it, I can't take it one more day. Yes, you can.
- 9:45You say, well, I can't imagine myself three weeks
- 9:48from now in this situation. You don't have to.
- 9:50There is no grace in hypothetical situations.
- 9:53If you start thinking next year or three weeks
- 9:56from now or two years from now or in five years,
- 9:59you know what? There's zero grace. You know what
- 10:01you get grace for today? I'm not sure unless
- 10:04you know more than me. I don't know that you'll
- 10:06be here three weeks from now, do you? I don't
- 10:08know if the earth will be here five weeks from
- 10:10now. The Lord is near. I don't know when he's
- 10:13coming back. You're listening to Living on the
- 10:18Edge with Chip Ingram, and we'll get back to
- 10:20today's message in just a moment. Did you know
- 10:23Chip isn't just on the radio? He's on YouTube,
- 10:25too. Just search Living on the Edge with Chip
- 10:29Ingram and hit subscribe. You'll find full -length
- 10:32video teaching from Chip on marriage, parenting,
- 10:35leadership, and a whole lot more, ready to watch
- 10:38whenever it fits your schedule. It's also a great
- 10:41way to share a message with a friend who needs
- 10:43it. All right, now back to our message. So he
- 10:46says, stand firm and be patient. And then here's
- 10:49the attitude, don't grumble against each other,
- 10:51brothers, or you'll be judged. The judge is standing
- 10:53at the door. He says, when things get difficult
- 10:56and when we should be waiting and realize there
- 10:59is a season in marriage, there is a season with
- 11:01our kids, there's a season in a ministry, what
- 11:04we tend to do is start blaming, grumbling. It's
- 11:07interesting, the word grumble here means to sigh,
- 11:09to groan silently within, or to whine without.
- 11:14I hate that definition. It so describes me at
- 11:17times. Isn't that good? To groan within or sigh,
- 11:23oh brother, or to whine without. It's to build
- 11:28resentment or a negative attitude toward another
- 11:30person. That's what it means to grumble. And
- 11:34in difficult circumstances, we are all prone
- 11:37to do it. Could I suggest that the lesson of
- 11:40the farmer would teach us that if we're not careful,
- 11:43we'll bail out. before God's season is complete
- 11:46in a relationship, a job, a ministry, a church,
- 11:51or a situation, and we will miss the blessing.
- 11:54We'll get in on the planting, we'll get on the
- 11:56cultivating, we'll get in on the dry season and
- 11:58the difficulty and adversity, and God was just
- 12:01about ready to rain and was just about to bring
- 12:03about and bear some fruit and you're ready to
- 12:05leave. And I learned this early and the hard
- 12:07way. I was in seminary and because I was kind
- 12:13of I guess, what would you call it? I'm hyper.
- 12:18Can you kind of recognize that? I'm a hyper guy,
- 12:21all right? And I was running a little janitorial
- 12:24company and going to seminary. And I had three
- 12:27kids and trying to balance all that. And the
- 12:29little janitorial company was having some financial
- 12:31difficulties. And I was also involved in a ministry
- 12:33about 20 hours a week. I mean, insane. And I
- 12:36realized after three years of sleeping about
- 12:38four and a half or five hours a night, I can't
- 12:40do this any longer. And I still have a full year
- 12:43of seminary left. And so I asked God to somehow
- 12:46take the ministry and a paycheck and put them
- 12:48together. And a little tiny church outside of
- 12:51Dallas in Kauffman, Texas called me to be their
- 12:53pastor. There's about 35 people out in the boonies
- 12:57of the boonies of the boonies. And they asked
- 12:59me, I didn't know it, they'd had a lot of difficult
- 13:01time with pastors. And I'm glad I didn't know
- 13:03it all, but they had been through about eight
- 13:05in the last three years. And if I would have
- 13:07been older and smarter, I would have asked a
- 13:09good question, but I didn't know that. And it's
- 13:11good I didn't know, but they asked me for a five
- 13:13-year commitment. And I thought, well, you know,
- 13:16God had showed me I'm supposed to be a pastor.
- 13:18And I thought, well, I've got one year of seminary.
- 13:20I could break that and slow down, do it in two
- 13:22years. And I'm going to have to learn how to
- 13:24be a pastor somewhere. This is a good place.
- 13:25Yeah, a few or five years. Well, I signed up
- 13:28for five years in that little group of 35. And
- 13:31I found out everyone was related. And I found
- 13:32out in about the first year why all the other
- 13:34pastors left. And they were wonderful people.
- 13:39But, you know, it was an interesting journey.
- 13:41And I had so much to learn. Year two or year
- 13:45two and a half, you know, now seminary is done.
- 13:48I've got about six months after it. And if someone
- 13:50would have said, you are out of your commitment,
- 13:53I would have run through the door. I mean, I
- 13:55grew up in the suburbs. This is a tiny little
- 13:57town. No stoplights. We actually grew and got
- 13:59a stoplight later. But I mean, at one end of
- 14:01town was the feed store. And the other end of
- 14:04the town was the wagon wheel. And I think there
- 14:07was a Sonic. I mean, that's it. And I mean, you
- 14:10know, in the Texas towns, you know, they have
- 14:12little squares where you have the courthouse
- 14:15and you could even see where the rings were,
- 14:17where people would put their horses. And everyone
- 14:19wore John Deere hats and had guns in the back
- 14:21of their pickups. And that is not how I grew
- 14:22up. This was a different environment for me.
- 14:24And it was hard, hard, hard, hard. And at two
- 14:27and a half years, I mean, I think we went to
- 14:2835 to maybe 90 or 100 people. And I'm just thinking,
- 14:31I'm knocking my head against the wall. I didn't
- 14:33go to seminary. Lord, I want to be a missionary.
- 14:35You know, there's like only 100 people here and
- 14:37I'm killing myself and I might be killing them.
- 14:39And I mean, everything in me wanted to leave
- 14:42except I made a commitment. And what I didn't
- 14:46understand is there's seasons. I didn't understand
- 14:49that the person who needed to grow up the most
- 14:51was a 28 -year -old young pastor who went there
- 14:54that didn't know what he didn't know. And that...
- 14:56Really, those people, instead of being kind of
- 14:58backward and this and that, they really knew
- 15:00a lot more about God and about how to teach me
- 15:02to be a pastor than I ever imagined or dreamed.
- 15:05And I stayed there for one simple reason. As
- 15:09I think, you know, let your yes be yes and your
- 15:11no be no. But emotionally, I mean, it was like,
- 15:14I mean, I think I would have taken a job, a good
- 15:16janitorial job, not running a company, but being
- 15:18the janitor. I mean, I was discouraged. And it's
- 15:22interesting is the seasons and God began to work.
- 15:26And by about year number four and five, we saw
- 15:29the thing begin to grow and God move in the area.
- 15:32And then actually I ended up staying eight years.
- 15:34And years six, seven, and eight, we just watched
- 15:37things double and multiply. And in a town of
- 15:39about 4 ,500, we saw about 500 people involved
- 15:42there. We saw churches get connected. We had
- 15:45outreach for all the youth non -denominationally
- 15:47for all the high school kids. We built a child
- 15:48welfare center. We shut down the pornography
- 15:51and all those little shops that they had. And
- 15:53God did a wonderful thing and I would have missed
- 15:55it all because I didn't want to wait. I didn't
- 15:59want to be patient. And I didn't understand what
- 16:01the farmer knows. The farmer knows their seasons.
- 16:05What season are you in? What season are you in
- 16:10in your marriage? What season are you in in your
- 16:12business? What season are you in in your church?
- 16:15What season are you in? And could it be that
- 16:18instead of if only this was different. And you
- 16:21know those secret thoughts like if only I had
- 16:23a different marriage partner. You know, if only
- 16:26my health was better then. What if God has you
- 16:30in his sovereign will and purposes in a season
- 16:33to develop something inside that's gonna be better
- 16:37and deeper and greater than you ever dreamed?
- 16:40That's what James is saying. Notice there's a
- 16:43second lesson, not just from the farmer, but
- 16:45there's a lesson to be learned from the prophet.
- 16:48And notice what he says here about the prophets.
- 16:51He says, brothers, as an example of patience
- 16:54in the face of suffering, take the prophets,
- 16:57plural. who spoke in the name of the Lord. And
- 17:02you think to yourself, well, what's amazing about
- 17:04that? It says, well, we're commanded to be patient
- 17:06even when our circumstances are unfair and unjust.
- 17:10Verse 10. See, that's what I get from the prophets.
- 17:13When I study the prophets' lives, I'm just thinking,
- 17:15if you really love God, if you're really for
- 17:18God, if you're really willing to take a stand,
- 17:20if you're gonna live a righteous life, then life's
- 17:22gonna be good. You're gonna be happy, right?
- 17:25Yet Daniel, happy, happy, happy with all those
- 17:28lions. You know, I'm the lion tamer. This sure
- 17:30is fun. Jeremiah, happy, happy, happy. I'm in
- 17:33a cistern down in a well. Now I'm in prison.
- 17:37Happy, happy, happy. Study the life of the prophets.
- 17:42My lands, they do exactly the right thing and
- 17:46they're treated with injustice and lack of fairness.
- 17:50Or Joseph. Here's a guy that, I mean, all I want
- 17:53to do, you gave me a dream. I want to do your
- 17:55will, Lord. So what's he get? Falsely accused,
- 17:58sent to prison unjustly. You know, his whole
- 18:04life, the first 30 years, is like a bad dream.
- 18:08God wants us to learn the lesson of the prophets.
- 18:12They spoke God's word. They were in the center
- 18:15of God's will. We have skewed expectations about
- 18:18what it means to walk in the will of God. See,
- 18:22it's the happiness cult that we've produced in
- 18:24America. You know, I'm a Christian. I should
- 18:27be happy. If I'm not happy, something's wrong.
- 18:29God, change it quickly, quickly, quickly. I mean,
- 18:32I want to put it in the spiritual microwave.
- 18:33Oh, goody, happy, happy, happy. Now everything's
- 18:35great, you know? And he says, learn a lesson
- 18:41from the prophets, Daniel, Jeremiah, Joseph,
- 18:43Elijah. They were in the center of God's will
- 18:48and being in the center of God's will meant pain
- 18:51and suffering and injustice and difficulty and
- 18:55being light and salt in a perverse and dark world.
- 19:01I mean, even in Jeremiah's case, I happen to
- 19:03be reading there right now. God even tells him,
- 19:06guess what? You just obey. And by the way, they're
- 19:09not going to listen. How would you like that
- 19:11job assignment? And he didn't say, well, could
- 19:14I get a transfer? I'd like transferred out of
- 19:18this one. I'd kind of like to be a prophet and
- 19:20some other. No, no, Jeremiah. Remember what he
- 19:23said in the first chapter? You know, before you
- 19:26were in your mother's womb, I have called you
- 19:28for this. Life is not certain. Life is not easy
- 19:37and life is not fair. That's a biblical appraisal.
- 19:42When you do what is right, when you're in the
- 19:46center of God's will, if you are expecting that
- 19:49everything lines up and goes your way, that your
- 19:52circumstances align, that people are gonna be
- 19:54wonderful, that all your kids are gonna make
- 19:56great decisions and turn out right, that you're
- 19:58never gonna have a major problem in your marriage,
- 20:00that you're never gonna go through difficult,
- 20:01painful health issues, that you're never gonna
- 20:04be betrayed by a friend, that you're never gonna
- 20:06have to have a messy church situation, you're
- 20:08never gonna have someone in business cheat or
- 20:10lie or do something difficult to you, then you
- 20:12set yourself up wrongly for a life of despair
- 20:17and discouragement and you'll get disillusioned
- 20:19with God. I meet Christians all the time that
- 20:21are disillusioned with God. God promised the
- 20:24abundant life. God promised I would be happy.
- 20:26God promised, and I'm thinking, yeah, God promised
- 20:29persecution. God promised suffering. God promised
- 20:32character building. How come no one's writing
- 20:34books on that? Seven steps to great character
- 20:37through intense suffering over a long period
- 20:39of time. I can just see that baby flying off
- 20:44the shelf. But is that not, if Jeremiah was writing
- 20:51a book, that's the one he'd write. If Joseph
- 20:53was writing a book, that's the one he'd write.
- 20:56But what do you find out about those prophets?
- 20:58What's the lesson? It's where they land. It's
- 21:01not what they go through. Consider it all joy,
- 21:04my brethren, when you encounter various or all
- 21:07kinds of difficulties, knowing that the testing
- 21:10of your faith produces perseverance, hupomeno.
- 21:15He's going to use this word. Hoopoe to be under,
- 21:17meno, stress or pressure. Knowing the testing
- 21:21of your faith produces perseverance and allow,
- 21:24it's a command, but it's in the passive voice.
- 21:26Allow perseverance or the difficulty to do what?
- 21:31Produce Christ -like character or maturity in
- 21:35you that God may do in you what he wants to do.
- 21:39See, the premise of the New Testament is not
- 21:42God wants to make you happy. You know what the
- 21:44correct premise is? God wants to make you holy.
- 21:49You're listening to Living on the Edge with Chip

- 22:09marriage, a job, or a church isn't just about
- 22:12gritting your teeth. At its core, it's a decision
- 22:15to love, even when the feelings aren't there.
- 22:18That's exactly what Chip's book, I Choose Love,
- 22:21is all about. Get your copy of I Choose Love

- 22:31walking through exactly the kind of season Chip
- 22:34described today. One listener, Holly, told us
- 22:37the last three years had been really tough and
- 22:40really dark. But Chip's teaching helped her stop
- 22:43looking at her circumstances and start focusing
- 22:45on God's promises. In her words, even though
- 22:49we're in the midst of circumstances that we can't
- 22:51control, God has promises, and He has a plan,
- 22:55and He works everything out for good. Well, stories
- 22:58like Holly's are why we keep teaching, and they're
- 23:00possible because listeners like you stand with

- 23:25here's Chip Ingram. Under pressure, we all play
- 23:28the if -only game. I mean, a lot of us just do
- 23:32it in our head and we never verbalize it. But
- 23:34we have this mindset, if this was different then.
- 23:37And let me tell you, perseverance is not fun.
- 23:42Hanging in there, not giving up in relationships,
- 23:45in a work situation, in something that you know
- 23:48God wants you to do. Changing will only bring
- 23:51a new set of problems. But I have to tell you
- 23:54this, you're going to need help to get there.
- 23:56And my best recommendation is to ask yourself,
- 24:00who are four or five people that I could go through
- 24:04this series, Five Lies That Ruin Relationships
- 24:07With, and begin to deal with these false beliefs
- 24:10I have about the if -only game and about work
- 24:13and about my tongue and about how life really
- 24:16works. There's certain lies we believe. They
- 24:19just wreck your life. This series is about pulling
- 24:23back the curtain and you seeing those lies for
- 24:26what they are and then getting biblical solutions
- 24:28by the grace of God to live differently. Can
- 24:32I encourage you? Start a journey with some people
- 24:35that you trust and watch God work in your heart.
