- 0:09Speaker 1: Greetings. Welcome to the Bible in three d. This is your host, Andrew. We are in a series entitled Hot Topics, and this is a, if you will, a mini series dealing with a hot topic of Old Testament Covenants and Promises. Today, we are going to look at the Mosaic Covenants, the New Covenant, and we're gonna go back also to the covenant that God had with Abraham.
- 0:40Just to refresh our minds, the Mosaic Covenant, God made with the people of Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai, also called Mount Horeb. It was a conditional agreement. God promised blessing and protection if Israel obeyed his law and judgment. They call it curses if they disobeyed. How the Bible teaches that the Mosaic Covenant was never meant to be permanent.
- 1:07It was designed to point forward to something greater. The coming of the Messiah and the establishment of the new covenant. The old covenant was there to show the need for the new covenant. The old covenant failed because no one could fulfill it. The only one who was able to fulfill the law of Moses was the man Jesus Christ.
- 1:33Fully God, fully man, one person with two natures. And the Old Testament points to the need for something better. This Messiah and this new covenant. Now Christians didn't make this up, the prophet Jeremiah foretold this centuries before Christ. So I'm now gonna read from Jeremiah thirty one thirty one through 32.
- 1:58The days are coming declares Yahweh. When I will make a covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah, it will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors because they broke my covenant. When Jesus came, he fulfilled a promise. At the last supper he said, and this is in Luke 22 verse 20. This is...
- 2:20This cup is the new covenant in my blood which is poured out for you. Remember, the Azusa in covenant, the same kind of format used in the Old Testament. There typically was a sacrifice, there was blood. We certainly saw it in chapter 15 of Genesis for Abraham. We see it again in Exodus chapter 19.
- 2:45We've got blood, some of the blood is thrown on the mountain, some of it is thrown on all the people. The book of Hebrews is very helpful because it explains that by saying the new covenant God had made the first one obsolete. So the Mosaic covenant was now obsolete. The sacrifices and rituals were a shadow, a type if you will, of the good things that were coming when we would have the perfect sacrifice. These realities, so the rituals from the Mosaic Covenants are a shadow of what's to come, What is to come is the reality and that is Christ.
- 3:25One sacrifice made holy for those who are being sacrificed. The Jews then are not bound by the old covenant, the Mosaic Covenant because it's been fulfilled and replaced by the new covenant. The old covenant, the Mosaic covenant was to reveal humanity's sin and our need for a savior. And we go to Galatians three twenty four and twenty five it says, the law is nailed to the cross. It's over.
- 3:58When our Lord Jesus, the last thing he said when he was on the cross was the telestai. It is finished. It is paid in full. I have fulfilled the old Mosaic covenant. And now, in its place, there is a new covenant and salvation is offered through the life death and resurrection of Jesus Christ on the cross.
- 4:21Fully God, fully man. It is offered to Jews and Gentiles alike. The ultimate purpose of the Mosaic Covenant was to point people to Christ. Now that this has happened, this comes to us and we receive it by faith and so the Mosaic Covenant is not needed. Now Jewish people are deeply loved by God, we read that in Romans eleven twenty eight and twenty nine.
- 4:49But like all people, they have to come to God through the new covenant, through faith in Jesus Christ. You know, Paul wrote in first Timothy chapter two, he says there's only one God, there's only one mediator, there's only one covenant now and it's the man Jesus Christ. Now here we get to the question. So is God done with the Jews other than that they need to be saved? You know, they're they're they're no different than anybody else.
- 5:18No. God is not done with the Jews and with this we have to go back to Daniel chapter nine. We learn in Daniel chapter nine that there were four hundred and ninety years for the Jews. Seventy sevens. Four hundred and eighty three of those passed and they ended about thirty three AD when it says in Daniel the anointed one is cut off and the clock of the four hundred ninety years is paused and it's been paused for two thousand years.
- 5:49The point of it is it still applies to the Jews. By the way, seventy sevens are decreed, this is in chapter nine, 70 sevens are decreed for your people and your holy city. Your people and your holy city. Alright. So 70 sevens is for people who are descended of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the holy one.
- 6:25Notice the prophecy is addressed for your people and your holy city. That is for Israel, Jerusalem, this is a particular ethnic group of people. The seventieth week has not occurred yet. So we often say this is what is described in Revelation as the tribulation. And during this time, God will focus again back on the nation Israel.
- 6:55How does this go down? Well, according to Daniel, Old Testament a covenant is confirmed between the coming ruler, this is the Antichrist, the beast of the sea, king of fierce countenance, all those things. So a covenant between the the Jewish people and the state of Israel, I suppose, and this antichrist is future for seven years. That is the final seven. Halfway through the covenant, when the temple is complete, the antichrist will break the covenant and go into the temple and declare himself to be God and demand worship.
- 7:38And that's when we get into, you know, the beast of the sea, the beast of the land, and the mark and the fact that you have to worship the beast. So this is a time of great tribulation for Israel. It's also for their eventual repentance and salvation when they recognize Jesus as their Messiah. So while the Mosaic Covenant is no longer in effect, the prophetic promises of God remain. They are still in effect.
- 8:08Paul tells us in Romans eleven one and two, God's covenant faithfulness to his people is not nullified by their unbelief. There is still a prophetic promise out there for the Jewish people. Paul says, the Apostle Paul says there is a partial hardening upon the Jews, Israel, and that happens until the fullness of the Gentiles comes in. So when all of the Gentiles who were destined to be saved are saved, then the clock will restart. And the whole point is that they will turn to the Messiah.
- 8:45Now we get down to where the rubber meets the road. If the Mosaic Covenants is no longer in effect, it's obsolete. If Jews don't have to follow the old Mosaic Covenant. Is God done with the Jews again? One more time?
- 9:06No. We still know there's the seven years out there, the last seven, and we still know there's God's eternal everlasting covenant with Abraham and his descendants for the land. I don't what that looks like. Well, if that's true, are we supposed to give unconditional political support to the modern Zionist state of Israel? The short answer is no.
- 9:34Now I know this got Charlie Kirk in trouble. However, scripture does require us to recognize that God still has a prophetic and redemptive purpose for the Jewish people and for the land of Israel. You know, again, we have ethnic Israel, the descendants of Abraham. We have prophecy regarding Jerusalem. And there are some churches, we got some Protestant churches, we certainly had the Roman Catholic church and the Orthodox would say, God is done with the Jews.
- 10:07Well, he's done with the Mosaic Covenant but he's not done with the prophetic promises. There is this thought that the church and in particular the Roman Catholic Church has replaced Israel and all these prophetic promises. It's a known fact. Mean, the Vatican has been eyeing Jerusalem for you know fifteen hundred years. They want to move there.
- 10:36Okay. Sorry, that's true. And it's this idea of well, know, the church has replaced Israel and all these promises. No. The promises were very specific to the descendants, ethnic Israel into Jerusalem, not to the church.
- 10:56So replacement theology is not. So while our prophetic reality says that we should care and treat our Jewish friends with all the care that we do with anybody who needs to get saved. That doesn't mean that there is a political command for us to support the state of Israel. There is no obligation because think about it, these promises were made to a covenant nation under Moses, under David. The political state of Israel now is not in a covenant relationship with God.
- 11:37No, they wanna think they are. Interesting, Well, there may be a reason to have a political alliance with this Zionist state of Israel, but that's not the same as the spiritual promises that God gave them. One more time. Scripture affirms God's covenant promises to Abraham's descendants and he says they won't be revoked and Paul reiterates that in Romans. I ask then, has God rejected his people?
- 12:08Certainly not, the apostle Paul says. For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham from the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Mosaic covenant is complete and obsolete but there are still prophetic promises to the people. Paul continues, as far as the gospel is concerned they are enemies for your sake but as far as election is concerned they are loved on account of the patriarch for God's gifts and all his call are irrevocable.
- 12:42Let's go through it here one more time. We need to recognize God's prophetic plan. It still exists. Israel Jews are still part of that. We are commanded to pray for the peace of Jerusalem and for the salvation of Jewish people.
- 12:57We need to avoid anti Semitism. We need to avoid replacement theology, the false idea that the church has permanently replaced Israel in God's plan. That's not true. That's not what the scripture says. Well, this is a short one.
- 13:12Friends, I want to be very clear. I've set out the covenants and what I've said about them conditional, unconditional, eternal, completed, those aren't my words, that comes straight from the Bible. I have friends who, like me came after the age of 30 to salvation. They came in their 40s and their wife I believe her father I believe is Jewish. Anyway, they became Christians and has gone on for a lot of people as we get older.
- 13:47Church organized churches kind of not set up for us and so they end up not going to church but studying scripture and getting involved and trying very hard to observe Mosaic Law. Do they think it's going to save them? No. There are religious ministries out there who want to engage with Jewish people to get them to go back to observe the Mosaic Law, Kosher, things like this. They want to encourage Christians, Gentile, to participate in Jewish festivals, Jewish customs and observe the law.
- 14:34I withhold judgment on any of this other than to say if that's what you want to do, there may be some health reasons. I remember sitcom back from the 60s and 70s, it was about a police station there in New York City and the one Jewish cop says to his boss, the captain because there was you know some drama going on, hey when you get to Rikers Island, tell them you're Jewish, you'll eat better. Okay, I mean there are good reasons to observe kosher rules. You do or don't do whatever you want but there's no requirement to do them. I think it behooves all of us to go to like a messianic Passover.
- 15:19Yeah, Passover was inaugurated by Moses or God using Moses back in fourteen forty six BC, but when we do some of those festivals and things it helps us to understand our salvation and the New Covenant better. If you go to a Messianic Passover you understand sacrifice and it just gives deeper meaning to things. I recommend all that to you. I am concerned about genocide. I don't think that's a God thing folks.
- 15:57All of which to say these episodes are going to be controversial. I hope you hear my heart, you hear my concerns, and I hope that the Lord God is glorified in everything that I've said.
