- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:12I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the Australian
- 0:16youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:22Reminder that next week, Annabelle and I are off the
- 0:25podcast for a week. We're taking one week 1/4 to
- 0:28rest and recuperate and get our creativity back.
- 0:32Instead of doing longer breaks twice a year, we're doing one
- 0:35shorter break every quarter. All right, before I get into it,
- 0:38Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 0:40Please Spotify star rate US, subscribe to us on YouTube,
- 0:44subscribe to our newsletter, all that good stuff.
- 0:46Let's get into the stories for today.
- 0:49The first story that I have for you guys today, somebody
- 0:51actually left a comment about this on our YouTube video like 2
- 0:54days ago. I think it was our episode 2
- 0:56days ago saying Oh my God mini tech is tomorrow which means we
- 0:59won't get to hear about Donna Kelsey's home renovation.
- 1:03And I was like what? So then I had to look into it
- 1:06and our first story today is Donna Kelsey.
- 1:09She is renovating her Florida home and it has become the meme
- 1:13of the week. So as we know Donna Kelsey, she
- 1:16is soon to be Taylor Swift mother-in-law.
- 1:19And earlier in the week, TMZ posted an article about Donna
- 1:22renovating her, quote, modest Florida home.
- 1:25They tweeted this with the caption quote Travis and Jason
- 1:28Kelsey's mom, Donna Kelsey is in the middle of a home renovation
- 1:31dot dot dot TMZ has learned. I think you guys can tell where
- 1:37this is going. This is possibly the most
- 1:43nothing story of all time. And so the Internet took it and
- 1:48ran with it. So for reference, Donna Kelsey's
- 1:51home, it's based in Orlando. It's a two-bedroom, 2 bathroom.
- 1:55And her renovation is her replacing 9 windows and six
- 1:59doors at this home. OK, so the tweet about her
- 2:03renovating her modest Florida home got over 30 million views.
- 2:08The Empire State Building tweeted about it writing
- 2:11Congrats to Donna Kelsey on remodeling her modest Florida
- 2:14home. People have also been turning
- 2:17the Bush meme of him learning about 911 into him learning
- 2:21about Donna Kelsey's home renovation meme.
- 2:23There's obviously also a lot of Taylor Swift memes.
- 2:26Like we had a marvelous time renovating everything.
- 2:29Like it's really taken off. Let's talk about the most
- 2:32important news out of the Kelsey family this week.
- 2:35We know everybody, everybody's been waiting to hear about it,
- 2:36everybody's on the edge of their seat and we wanted to wait to
- 2:40break this news on the show, but reports have already started to
- 2:42leak out. Yes, everybody already knows
- 2:44about it, man. We got to talk about it.
- 2:46Yeah. Donna Kelsey is remodeling her
- 2:49modest Florida home. Let's give it up for Donna,
- 2:53Mama. Give it up for Mama.
- 2:55Mama. Kels, Mama.
- 2:57I told her she needed me to like screw some door hinges in.
- 3:01I could have done it for her, but I guess she wants to do the
- 3:03whole remodel. And of course, a huge part of
- 3:06this is the contrast between how chaotic and difficult the actual
- 3:11news cycle is right now and then the complete mundanity of this
- 3:15story and how many views this story got in comparison.
- 3:20Someone on X put this perfectly. They wrote it was quote one of
- 3:23the funniest bits on here in a while.
- 3:25All right, the next story that I have for you guys today, it
- 3:28seems like Brooke Schofield is officially married.
- 3:32So Brooke Schofield seemingly married her boyfriend, Slash.
- 3:36I guess he's not her boyfriend. He was her fiance for the last
- 3:38however many months. Miles Canton, AKA Miles McFly.
- 3:42If you guys don't know who Miles is, he's the son of movie
- 3:44producer Neil Canton of the Back to the Future trilogy.
- 3:47So the two got engaged, I think around June 2025.
- 3:50That's at least when they announced it.
- 3:52And they had an elopement it seems yesterday, and I believe
- 3:55it was in LA. There's not a lot of details yet
- 3:58because it was so intimate and private.
- 4:00But Brooke has been posting content saying that she's
- 4:02married. And she also did post like her
- 4:05glam, her makeup, her dress. People are in the comments being
- 4:08like, where's so and so, like, where's his parents?
- 4:10Where is Tana? And then she was like, it's
- 4:12literally just us too. So I think it was quite
- 4:15literally just them two getting eloped, getting eloped, getting
- 4:20married, eloping for a marriage. So it looks like from her
- 4:24videos, she wore a very simple, sleek, like white halter dress.
- 4:28It was very Brooke. It was very classic.
- 4:31It was very like clean girl minimalist.
- 4:32It was very Brooke and she did have full glam on, but it was
- 4:36still, I would say like pretty natural looking like a pink lip,
- 4:38like it was very like bridal natural full glam, if that makes
- 4:41sense. And she wore a slick back bun,
- 4:44like a French twist, but it was like slick back, which has
- 4:47honestly been incredibly controversial.
- 4:51Everyone is freaking out because Brooke has such like a nice
- 4:55long, soft, you know, bouncy hair.
- 4:58Like her hair is kind of like her signature thing.
- 5:00And people literally cannot get over the fact that she decided
- 5:03to wear slick back to her wedding.
- 5:06And then in general, it's kind of sparked to this, like greater
- 5:08conversation around if brides should wear slick backs to their
- 5:12wedding. There's a lot of people that say
- 5:14that look is going to look really dated soon because it's
- 5:17going to be very obvious that you got married between like, I
- 5:19don't know when did slick backs get popular like 2023?
- 5:23So whenever they stop being popular, I don't know, but I
- 5:25actually don't really agree with that.
- 5:27I think we have seen bridal updos that resemble a slick back
- 5:32for like a million years. I don't think that's necessarily
- 5:35a sign of a twenty 20s wedding, but I understand why people were
- 5:38kind of surprised to see that her hair was not down because
- 5:41that is like honestly one of her signature things.
- 5:43But if she liked how she looked, then good for her.
- 5:46She looked beautiful. Of course, it was very
- 5:48glamorous. It gave like old Hollywood their
- 5:50vibe and she was definitely taking the joke.
- 5:53OK. People were making fun of her
- 5:54for wearing like a slick back and saying that she looks bald.
- 5:57And then she posted a video of Miles cuz he's bald and people
- 6:00always make fun of how he's bald.
- 6:02So she made a video where she was like married my bald king
- 6:05and then her caption she was like and he married his bald
- 6:08queen. So I guess Brooke is officially
- 6:10a wife. All right.
- 6:12The last story that I have for you guys today is beauty
- 6:14creators the Lipstick Lesbians. They have launched their own
- 6:18brand, Leaked Labs. 2 mixed reviews.
- 6:21So Leaked Labs was founded by wife and wife creator duo Alexis
- 6:25and doctor Christina, known online as the Lipstick Lesbians.
- 6:29Christina holds a PhD in education technology and she
- 6:32previously worked as an English teacher while Alexis worked in
- 6:35product development for a handful of conglomerates.
- 6:38They've grown their platform on TikTok over the years to 1.2
- 6:41followers through beauty related content.
- 6:45Are we called? The lipstick lesbians.
- 6:46Used to have a beauty brand and my brilliant wife said we're
- 6:48lesbians, we sell lipstick, we need to be the.
- 6:51Lipstick lesbian. The idea of capturing the handle
- 6:53was so that we can show behind the scenes of our lives as
- 6:56founders ago. What did I do?
- 6:57I filmed. Alexis, he had fun on platform.
- 6:59We made short, trendy pieces of content, but we weren't
- 7:02providing. Value December 2022 Alexis lost
- 7:06all hearing in her left ear shortly after then faced.
- 7:09Unemployment. The only thing that would have
- 7:10brought me out of my slumber was going to buy a new foundation
- 7:13that launched. In my very teacher playful
- 7:15nature, I filmed the Lexus, I gamified it.
- 7:17It really showed her breath as a beauty product developer and I
- 7:19posted that video that first video that we posted is also our
- 7:22first long form video. We.
- 7:24Shifted to educational, entertaining content that
- 7:26provided insane value to our community.
- 7:29The next day she wakes me up. We're viral.
- 7:32Our audience was hashtag beauty talk.
- 7:34Doing it from such a corporate lens with almost 17 years of my
- 7:37experience. Also, Christina has 17 years in
- 7:39education. A doctor in education.
- 7:40Get to be a producer. You get to be a director, You
- 7:42get to be an editor. Kept on going to the beauty
- 7:44stores and he kept on going viral.
- 7:46But then you decided to challenge me further, and you
- 7:48wanted me to start making content at home.
- 7:50We lived in a tiny studio apartment in Brooklyn.
- 7:52We had no space, no studio set up, but we knew we had to start
- 7:56somewhere. It took us six months to get
- 7:58into a new, bigger space in Brooklyn that could actually
- 8:00store all the makeup that we needed, built our.
- 8:03Own at home. Studio.
- 8:04OK, so last month they started teasing that they were about to
- 8:07launch a brand and they officially announced the launch
- 8:10this week, the day before before the 1st product was released.
- 8:13Leaked Labs is a direct from lab beauty brand that releases early
- 8:18stage samples, essentially called quote UN quote leaks and
- 8:21observes how they perform in real life, allowing formulas to
- 8:24evolve rather than sit unseen in development cycles.
- 8:28So upon the announcement of this concept, I think people were
- 8:31intrigued. However, now that their first
- 8:35launch has come out, there is mixed reaction.
- 8:37Like I said, the brand's first release is called Amplify Flexi
- 8:41Powder and this is what they wrote on TikTok about it.
- 8:44Now leaking Amplify Flexi Powder, the first flexible
- 8:47powder disk, a shape shifting pigment that bends, activates
- 8:51with water setting spray or other mediums, and reforms
- 8:54adapting to your artistry and your skin. 1 formula with
- 8:58infinite finishes from sheer wash to high impact pearlized
- 9:01depth. This is the world's first
- 9:04flexible powder. It's amplify flexi powder by
- 9:07leaked labs. I'm going to show you the ways
- 9:09that I like to play. You can use it dry, you can use
- 9:12it wet. It's so adaptable When it gets
- 9:15wet, it will re dry back to its original form.
- 9:18You can use water, You can use micellar water.
- 9:20You can use setting spray. I'm going to show you what it
- 9:22looks like to spray and wet one single spray as this liquefies.
- 9:27It looks like liquid metal and when I lay this down on my eyes,
- 9:31I want you to see how this is going to start to look icy.
- 9:34The more wet you make the product, the more liquefied or
- 9:38Chrome and metallic it's going to.
- 9:40Be instead of, you know, like a powder in a compact, let's say
- 9:43that you use with a brush. You can actually like take this
- 9:47product out and it's like a flat, like bendy, like rubber,
- 9:51almost looking like circular disc that moves around.
- 9:55And that's how you use the product.
- 9:56And when you buy it, it comes in like this tin disc.
- 9:59And like I said, then you can take it out and like just use it
- 10:02however you want. Like it's flexible.
- 10:03And I assume that the packaging looks like this because in
- 10:07theory, you're actually buying samples, like you're not buying
- 10:11like a finished product. That's kind of the whole concept
- 10:14of their brand. There are a lot of people that
- 10:16are like, you know what? This is like an innovative
- 10:18concept. Let's give it a try.
- 10:19We love when people are trying different things.
- 10:21This is exciting, but I would say there are two main
- 10:23criticisms. The first that the concept,
- 10:26while yes, different, innovative, unique to an extent,
- 10:30kind of also feels like maybe a way to cut corners for the brand
- 10:34where they don't need to pay for consumer perception tests and
- 10:37insights before a product goes to market.
- 10:39Instead, they're actually getting consumers to pay for
- 10:43that almost because they're charging consumers to buy their
- 10:45samples. And then, yeah, like I said,
- 10:48basically the concept is that they get to kind of like gather
- 10:50that feedback and like change the product as time goes on and
- 10:53things is based on that feedback.
- 10:55And the second criticism is of the product itself.
- 10:58The first product, people feel like it's a gimmick.
- 11:01As an engineer, people have been asking me my opinion on this new
- 11:07product from Leaked Labs and well, I'm here to give it to
- 11:11you. I think this product is a
- 11:14gimmick. Now why do I think it's a
- 11:16gimmick? Well, it's not serving any
- 11:19functional purpose or solving any problem.
- 11:23It is a polymer with pigment dispersed in it.
- 11:29But the polymer is elast American nature.
- 11:32So it's flexible, it's elastic, and it sticks together.
- 11:37But when you Swatch on it, pigment comes out of it.
- 11:40I'm not here to hate on anyone trying this product.
- 11:43I'm not here to squash anyone's excitement but the innovation.
- 11:51I'm not seeing where this is innovative.
- 11:53I'm not seeing what market gap this is filling.
- 11:56I'm not seeing a need for this. I think people literally are
- 11:59just buying this because it's relatively inexpensive for all
- 12:04of the shades. You can get all the shades for
- 12:05$34. People's reactions to the launch
- 12:08of Leaks Labs and their first beauty prototype just is a very
- 12:13strong reminder to me that we are incapable of giving helpful
- 12:16feedback that's not shrouded in negativity and that we don't
- 12:20really read. We don't read what like
- 12:22companies are for what their mission is before giving feed
- 12:25said feedback, negative feedback on a brand because the idea that
- 12:29this company is meant to give you early access to beauty
- 12:31prototypes, collect your feedback and then decide like,
- 12:34hey, is this going to actually be a product that a brand is
- 12:36launching or are we going to retire it given negative
- 12:39feedback from people. And still the feedback that it's
- 12:42receiving is like, Oh my God, this is so gimmicky.
- 12:44I don't even know why they would launch this.
- 12:46Well, like, that's not helpful feedback.
- 12:49And it just, I think it fundamentally misunderstands
- 12:51what the company is trying to achieve, which isn't it does
- 12:55take a bit of like, OK, I get this.
- 12:57And I had to go back and read the press release probably like
- 13:003 times before I understood it myself.
- 13:02But just going and seeing all these reaction videos and going
- 13:05through the comment sections and just like, yeah, you could have
- 13:08feedback on this brand. That is literally the point.
- 13:11But you can do it in a way that is productive and not so
- 13:14negative. JC Dombrowski wrote on TikTok.
- 13:17Call me a hater but like coming from someone who worked in
- 13:20cosmetic R&D for years, this just seems like a way to not
- 13:23have to pay for consumer perception tests with half
- 13:26finished products. And like the consumer being told
- 13:29it is cool to spend money on unfinished goods is wild to me.
- 13:33Someone else wrote travel makeup travel.
- 13:35Why is no one excited about how compact this is?
- 13:37That's true. That's actually a really good
- 13:38point. Because that is not going to
- 13:40break and smash in your makeup kit, Cheetos 3485 wrote.
- 13:44We have crayons, sticks, creams, eye shadows.
- 13:47Why would I choose to hold this little rubbery bit in my hand or
- 13:50use on a pallet? It's unsanitary in the first
- 13:53case and wasteful in the second. I am not intrigued, not
- 13:56interested, Maria the Daily Mom wrote.
- 13:58As a makeup lover that stopped buying makeup because of how
- 14:00expensive things got, this product isn't making me want to
- 14:03go back to buying makeup or even want to try it.
- 14:05It's a cool conversion starter, but I don't think it's
- 14:07innovative or anything special. I think they would have been
- 14:09better if they advertised it as unbreakable makeup instead of
- 14:12the flexi powder gimmick that it is.
- 14:14I actually agree with that unbreakable makeup.
- 14:16I feel like that's the hook, that's the angle.
- 14:18But like I said, there are some people who are excited about
- 14:21this, including the founder of Stila, Janine LaBelle.
- 14:24So this is what she said. All right, so let's talk about
- 14:27these. So one thing I believe is that
- 14:30just because somebody doesn't like something doesn't make it
- 14:34bad or not a good thing. It's just taste, right, like
- 14:37personal taste. I find a lot of negativity about
- 14:41people making products, launching brands.
- 14:44I find the negativity really disheartening because I'm here
- 14:48for it. Anyone that wants to like follow
- 14:50their passion or do their dream and like you go.
- 14:54So I'm here to say as a brand founder Stila Neen, I'm not like
- 15:00a technical product developer. I'm like a makeup artist,
- 15:03product developer, but I am really into the lipstick
- 15:06lesbians because I think that they're educating us.
- 15:09Like even I learn shit, I'm like, oh wow, that's what that
- 15:12ingredient does. So when I heard about Leaked
- 15:15Labs, I thought it was really cool.
- 15:17It is not a finished product. It's an experiment, right?
- 15:21And it's an experiment for people like me love makeup and
- 15:24exploring and learning and checking shit out.
- 15:27And I direct communication with people to get the feedback.
- 15:31So I'm here for it. I think they did a great job
- 15:34with their first leak. Is it a leak or a lot?
- 15:36Leak or a lot? I guess it's a leak and then
- 15:38it'll be a launch. I don't know.
- 15:39What do you guys think about this?
- 15:41I would be intrigued to try this because it is like such a unique
- 15:45style of makeup. But I think that's where my
- 15:48interest ends. And we see a lot of brands get
- 15:51trapped in that cycle where they put out something that kind of
- 15:55borders innovative and gimmicky and people will give it like one
- 16:00try because it's something different and they want to see
- 16:02what it's like. But they're not actually
- 16:04interested in seriously adopting it into their makeup routine and
- 16:08it having a permanent home in their makeup bag.
- 16:10I fear that might be where this goes, but we'll see.
- 16:14This is literally their first launch, their first product, and
- 16:17you know, they have a really big following people who are going
- 16:19to be excited to support them regardless.
- 16:22And even though there are mixed reactions, like this is what you
- 16:26want from a brand launch, right? Like you want a lot of
- 16:28discourse. So they are achieving that.
- 16:31Tons of people are talking about their brand launch and it they
- 16:34wouldn't be if they just launched like their own makeup
- 16:36line like everybody else does. Like this is something
- 16:39different. So they're getting a lot of
- 16:40press regardless, for better or worse.
- 16:43Anyways, guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
- 16:45Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
