- 0:01All right, take two. Good thanks so much. Tutting into heavy podcast.
- 0:05Today, we're here at the Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane with Chess and
- 0:09Jail, Jess sorry and JT from here who come all the way over to
- 0:13play some shows with not playing. Yes, sir, I'll want to shake
- 0:15your hand twice because so how are you going, guys? Like, what's
- 0:21what's the process? Like? Did you come in a couple of days earlier
- 0:24to a climatize and relax or splice right in and get into it? Uh?
- 0:28Yeah, normally you like to definitely one of the more painful travel experiences
- 0:33for this occasion. We got here like I think I put my back down
- 0:37in the room at nine pm last night. So yeah, normally we've tried
- 0:40to get in the morning. But I guess however, the travel plans worked
- 0:44out. We were we were here to kind of leave. It was a
- 0:46long, long day of travel. How'd you go with Jed? Like you
- 0:49couldn't your sleep getting straight off the plane up a bit? Uh? You
- 0:52like eleven hours the plane slept like maybe four or five like would like it
- 0:59on the plane taking off on I'm gone, I can't. I'm like claustrophobic
- 1:04and uncomfortable. I don't like it. You do, you do what you
- 1:07can. But you know, if we had to play that morning, I'm
- 1:11sure we all could, but we would just hate ourselves. You just snake
- 1:15too. We've suffered before, we'll suffer for your again. Yeah, and
- 1:21you guys are here in Bridgemond, all the way from Birmingham, Alabama made
- 1:25for shows with North Lane landmarks and banks. Would start tonight BRISI and then
- 1:29you go through Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide and finishing Perth on probably the seven
- 1:33eighth run as circus. Like, how do you prepare yourself mentally? I
- 1:38guess for a runner show so far away from homelanders. I mean, honestly,
- 1:45we most of the time we're so excited to share our music with anybody
- 1:49that's not in the US because we know how appreciative they they are of us
- 1:53coming over here. So we're only excited to be here. Yes, there's
- 1:57like a lot of like technical hurt alls and getting getting our gear here,
- 2:00but like all in all, we're just excited to show up and rock.
- 2:04Like We've never not had a great time overseas, so we're very grateful for
- 2:08that hammer songs just s being here a couple of songs every day. Yeah
- 2:16think, yeah, how do you write a straying crowds as opposed to risk
- 2:21among the best animals? Yeah yeah, we prefer the animalstic Yeah, I
- 2:28mean, I mean, what's funny is you're like even in Japan where they're
- 2:30very respectful, they're still they still even get wild too. So like everywhere
- 2:36you go, like people, people know what to do and music most of
- 2:39the time, which is nice, like a little bit off track. But
- 2:43I remember watching on in Japan from Northwest and not steal pantable playing and I'm
- 2:46just looking around. I'm waiting for play, just to see, just to
- 2:51see how I did it. I loved it all right, loved it.
- 2:55Expecting people back in Yeah yeah, I'd be a band that might rob you
- 3:01the wrong way. But that's like that's that's a fun band. They know
- 3:04what they are, they're fad I gotta watch it. Yeah, it's not
- 3:07fair money. It's like the maybe the modern day Bloodhound Gang. Ye blood
- 3:13Gang. Yeah, oh my god, I get off that one. Yeah
- 3:19yeah, and you guys a no Australi situated with north Lane either, like
- 3:23these being the rights a bit of a romance happening there. Oh my god,
- 3:25we go way back. You Frozen Flame with them, then did what
- 3:30two American tours with them, one Europe and this is our second time in
- 3:35Australia with them. Yeah, even before my time. They did August Brinds
- 3:39Red Frozen Flame tour in like twenty fifteen. Yeah, yeah, so that
- 3:45was I think the first time you guys met them. What is the band?
- 3:50What you like? Is it? This is a musica connect with this?
- 3:52Is it a friendship? Like? Uh? People people associate our band
- 3:55sounds so like people like fan It's kind of consider us like sort of whatever,
- 4:03like brother bands or whatever, but based on based on the way our
- 4:08band's sounding. Yeah, it's kind of always been like that since we started
- 4:12in twenty eleven, the American Northland or the Australian era, you know era.
- 4:19Yeah, and we've also got the French band I believe called Landmarks and
- 4:25Banks, Like, do you know much about those guys? No, I've
- 4:29not really met any of them. I think Connor knows one of the Landmark
- 4:32members from like back in the day. Yeah, yeah, first dates,
- 4:38we haven't gotten gott a chance to hang out with them. Much metags Hi.
- 4:42Yeah, I remember I actually got the ships with those guys the first
- 4:46time we interviewed him because there one of name one who has got to be
- 4:48instead of the vowel in the landmarks. So yes, and I'm just I
- 4:53just had a stupid dumb moment I'm reading, I'm knowing how to pronounce it.
- 4:56Oh no, So that's why I always got pretty much their fault.
- 4:59That's why I Spanish introduce themselves now before the interview starts, because then they
- 5:02say their name, and I've got this change for sucking up. That's a
- 5:04great way to introduce somebody if you forget their name, introduce them to somebody
- 5:09else and have them always say this is and they're not walk away, so
- 5:12that look like I'm ready. Then they say the name that cuts you on
- 5:15the way off. So yeah, I've done that many years gone. I'll
- 5:16be like, Jesse, introduce yourself so I can get their name from you.
- 5:19This is my mate. You were last out here in September twenty twenty
- 5:26two with the pot in you. So what's changed with the band that in
- 5:29that couple of years? From Benje on air, we just we're promoting a
- 5:34new record coming out in April. That's that's kind of the biggest change.
- 5:40So yeah, so this is yeah, we have a new music to play,
- 5:45a couple of newer songs from the record to play. It's so funny
- 5:48how fast like music that we just put out already feels old to us,
- 5:54you know, already played a bunch kind of ready to play the new stuff
- 5:57already. You would have been sitting on that album for a bit of time
- 6:00before it came out. Also, like to us, it's been out eighteen
- 6:02months, but to you, yeah, for three or four. Yeah,
- 6:04it's funny how quickly that happens. Like you're so excited to play it and
- 6:09you're like, all right, I'm sick. Yeah, yeah again. But
- 6:14then you you know, then you sit on it, you play it,
- 6:16you don't play it, and then you come back to it years later and
- 6:19you're like, oh, yeah, these songs are fun. I forgot about
- 6:21these. I still regod from Bridge Australian band called the Screaming Jets the other
- 6:26day and they've got a song called Better that came out in the nineties,
- 6:29I think, and he was saying, since that came out in the nineties,
- 6:31they haven't played one show where they haven't played that song. Oh that
- 6:35was That's like hybrid Earth for Eric for a for a long time, and
- 6:41we finally retired it. How did you go to get a bit of back
- 6:44last when he did? Yeah, I mean we played it for a couple
- 6:46of tours when I joined, But then once we started putting like two or
- 6:49three records out, the same thing, you know, the same thing kind
- 6:54of happens. Yeah, yeah, I mean eventually we'll have to retire,
- 6:58like even songs like snow Blood then, which is weird to think about.
- 7:05I remember from last time Gravy like the big buzz about you guys was your
- 7:10live show, Like everyone was just blowing away by how good it was.
- 7:13So what are you going to do this time to top it? Like you've
- 7:15got to you've got up too and a bit nothing nothing, do the same
- 7:19thing. Hopefully it be just as good and consistent that you'll have to tell
- 7:24us. I'm going to go and the kids tonight. Unfortunately, I was
- 7:27gonna love to say around, but they won't let me. Need into the
- 7:29seven year old. I'm going to try that. I'm still going to try
- 7:31it. Just cover the years, protect the years, you know, I'll
- 7:38try not to curse too much, hope the time bad like the Australian Way.
- 7:48Where are we so for people that might not have seen you guys before,
- 7:51like describe a typical era live show, like do you sort of go
- 7:55out there with something in mine or is it just all mayhem? We definitely
- 7:59care a lot about the flow of the set. We will go back and
- 8:03forth about the set list for like weeks at a time, kind of look
- 8:07at it as a whole, see where like the slower parts are. And
- 8:11I think there has been one occasion where we kind of like misjudge the flow
- 8:16of the set within the tour well, like Yankee song out or like put
- 8:20a song in just to change how it feels. But yeah, most importantly,
- 8:24we just want to have like the heavy parts the soft parts of the
- 8:28crowd moments, making sure the space in between songs like too long where it's
- 8:31like uncomfortable, it's very it's very purposeful. People don't sort of realize how
- 8:39much cars here that or other. I think, did you sit there and
- 8:39watch songs down for a set list, but you go to take into acting
- 8:43so they flow into each other our changes. Yeah, yeah, make sure
- 8:48you have enough strings for the next song you're gonna play would direct too many?
- 8:52Yeah. I actually been sort of like Little String Band the other night
- 8:56and I played the debut album Stop and Finish Well, and they're a great
- 8:58band, much of a name, but live it didn't quite a down as
- 9:03good on anything. When when you write an album, you don't write it
- 9:05with a view if happened to play in the whole long life. One day,
- 9:07I said there was the ups for actually been the downs is massive too.
- 9:11There was my real flight. M. I feel like we kind of
- 9:13do that though. Do you ever write with like I feel like you write
- 9:18with the live presence in mind sometimes like how it's going to translate? Yeah,
- 9:24maybe, I mean there's definitely been moments where we put a song in
- 9:28the set and felt like, man, I didn't always gonna feel this slow
- 9:33or something like that. But no, like even when I'm writing, I'll
- 9:39write apart and be like, yeah, that's gonna be physically impossible to do
- 9:43well, so I'll have to like kind of augment it or you know,
- 9:48just kind of think about the performance for sure. And I think that's something
- 9:50that we started to do a couple of years ago when we that actually happened
- 9:56like, oh my god, Yeah, this is gonna make it really our
- 10:00lives really difficult. So I don't know. I feel like that's a pretty
- 10:03important part in the writing process, but who knows. We write pretty tough
- 10:09music, so we kind of have to pay attention to that stuff that matter.
- 10:13My Let just say you're on there and you're playing a song and you'll
- 10:16feel and the it's not working, like, could you feel like back up
- 10:18to Croyden. I can, but I've also been wrong. So he's gonna
- 10:24miss interpret with a slow song. Yeah, because it's a slow song,
- 10:28there's less there would be less movement, so I I just look to see
- 10:33it if they're singing along. Yeah, that's kind of like the trade off
- 10:39of like less physical movement is singing along in the song, and you get
- 10:43that if neither of those two things are happening and it doesn't feel great,
- 10:48you probably know. It's a pretty big difference for playing like ghosts at lists
- 10:52versus hair at content too, because you know, we'll play like an hour
- 10:56of grips and breakdowns and the o Satalas said that he'll play. The crowd
- 11:01might love it just as much, but it's like it's not the same genre.
- 11:05So one part, if you're in the crowd log I can tell because
- 11:09you can hear people start the chalk, like when the slow song comes on,
- 11:11like this little rupting startle all over the placements on it. I hope
- 11:16they don't here. Yeah, people are tweeting actively while you're playing Getting Pants.
- 11:22Yeah, I've been grateful lately, so that's been good. I think
- 11:26not a not a lot of distracted viewers. So I think we're doing okay.
- 11:33I want to stand, he goes, I when I was right be
- 11:35id actually a big bit. You could get your in trouble which probably won't
- 11:39use around you support north late life. When you go out on stage,
- 11:43like in your head, are you going out there to war the crowd up
- 11:46for the headline or you going down there just a smash them and just blow
- 11:48everyone else's way? Yeah? Yeah, you want to go out there into
- 11:54your best no matter what. You playing the same show, whether we're supporting
- 11:58our headlining. But yeah, I mean hopefully as a support man, you
- 12:03go you don't go to just kind of like boost up the headliner. You
- 12:09go to like representing yourselves. So when people come see your show or your
- 12:13headliner, they know what to expect. Yeah, I mean yeah, like
- 12:20in the in the I get really pearly discouraged when I hear bands like who
- 12:24are opening and say, you know, we'll play two more songs then we'll
- 12:28get off stage. You don't have to hear us anymore. They like kind
- 12:30of discredit themselves. I'm like, no, you guys belong there, Like
- 12:33even though you're playing, even if you have twenty five thirty minutes, like
- 12:37you earn that time slot and you should. You should represent yourselves as if
- 12:41as big as you can. You know, more nervous, so you're about
- 12:45to be nervous. Yeah, I mean that that could be a translation of
- 12:48their nervousness into their dialogue. But I mean even I've been there in the
- 12:52past, but I've I've learned to kind of change my mindset and my approach
- 12:56to that. I think it's been very helpful. I'd a lot of shit,
- 13:01Yeah, I mean, it's never been got their own own way to
- 13:03kind of get through the nerves. Mine's mine's always to tell of course,
- 13:07say something that makes no sense, but it just brings you back around.
- 13:11Yeah, Ocean Grove from here. I told a crowd once that they were
- 13:16doing their first Native American tour. Yeah, I'll never forget that one.
- 13:22Even even in my years. My front of house guy was like, what
- 13:26the he I'm sure my whole man was like this guy on microphone. Yeah,
- 13:35live and learn that sense allot. When you front the band Light,
- 13:39do you when you write your settly s Outlight? Do you write a settles
- 13:41out that you think will appeal to the headline and band's crowd because of the
- 13:45to them? What do you just do you do? Once? Does it
- 13:46you want to do? Sometimes? Well, always like a healthy balance between
- 13:52just doing doing your thing and then yeah and then kind of catering a little
- 13:58bit to like people who may have never heard us. But yeah, it's
- 14:01something in between. We would never just do a fully heavy set or a
- 14:05fully soft set, but we'll balance it out based on that. Oh the
- 14:09band like Northland, we can just kind of go out and do what we
- 14:11do because our bands are so closely associated with one another. Yep sonically,
- 14:18Yeah, that's true. So hypothetical question, do you guys you've just finished?
- 14:22She said, He's a Stephen backstage, just telling yourselves down and whatever
- 14:26you do? Okay, what that to have happened in that last forty five
- 14:28minutes. Might you sit there and go, fuck, that was a bright
- 14:31set uh energy in the crowd. I'm definitely one to like really feel that
- 14:37emotional transference between like a wild crowd or a still crowd. Yeah, And
- 14:43even if I do have a still crowd, if I ask like how everybody's
- 14:46doing, and it's like a roar of flause, I'm like, oh,
- 14:50okay, they're having fun. So it's not always just about how wild it
- 14:54is. When we played with bad omens recently where a lot of them are
- 14:58seeing us for the first time, and I'll even ask who is and it's
- 15:01like nine percent of the crowd. So and those environments, you won't get
- 15:03a lot of movement because they're not used to you, but they're still having
- 15:07fun. You just kind of gotta realize that not every time you play,
- 15:11they're gonna know who you are, and you just gotta you have to give
- 15:15that same performance everywhere you go every time. Yeah, while we're on the
- 15:20hypotheticals in like just you say that to the crowd, like you say as
- 15:22everybody going tonight and you just get met back with a round of epathy,
- 15:26Like how do you come up from that? Like does does it make you
- 15:30take a step back and go, you fucked? You try not to human
- 15:35nature like you have to, you gotta, you gotta, Like I think
- 15:41there is like a responsibility to to try to play the same show every night
- 15:46and to not be too judgmental towards the crowd because you don't know, like
- 15:50sometimes you just get an introverted crowd or you know what I mean, or
- 15:52if it's not your headliner, like you have to there's a bit of an
- 15:56approving ground there. So you have to just kind of yeah, you kind
- 16:00of gotta approach with more humility, you know what I mean, like and
- 16:03just play the same show and just keep it together and not let your inside
- 16:08You may be like, oh, this is like humiliating. I gotta I
- 16:11gotta go backstage. But you gotta, like there's there's gotta be like an
- 16:17effort to them. You don't you don't you don't expose that to them.
- 16:21That's not professional you like, you know, at the end of the day,
- 16:26like they paid money to just to see you, like or if they're
- 16:30even there's there's see the headliner for that thirty minutes forty five minutes that they're
- 16:34watching you, so like I think you do kind of owe it to them
- 16:37to do your best, you know, like and why would you not want
- 16:40to do that anyways, Like, yeah, you just gotta play the show
- 16:45no matter what. Now. The other big thing happening in the world of
- 16:48Era at the moment is on IPLL, the fifty or sixth studio album,
- 16:52Qua will be unleashed on the world. Tell us ABO about that. It's
- 16:56so crazy. Uh yeah, Heres, here's what we're pretty excited about is
- 17:03our first time working with A Dan Bronstein. We put out the single which
- 17:07is the title track, just put that out a week ago, so yeah,
- 17:15pretty stoked to play that one. Pretty nervous to play it and stoked.
- 17:19You know, it's the first show, so like I'm just play My
- 17:22nerves are just like fucked on the first show. Yeah, I just want
- 17:27to make sure everything works and you know we're good to go. But usually
- 17:30by like a few days in, we're kind of broken in. But yeah,
- 17:34with us being Australia, you play less shows in Australia when you tour,
- 17:38so by the time we'll be broken in and comfortable, it will be
- 17:41over. Think about as rians. I like and don't tell you to your
- 17:47mother wife, like I have to say, he's gone Adam with bread and
- 17:48fucking stop. Well, I mean like, yeah, there's definitely some cultures
- 17:56out there and that will tell you to your face that you are bad and
- 18:03you say thank you, but then they'll also buy your marks still, so
- 18:07it's like, yeah, it is what it is. You've released the title
- 18:14track here and you've also released Pyle Harris from the album, so I think
- 18:18put some representation of what do you expect actually slip, Yeah, not really
- 18:23to listen to the album last night, its fucking pro I was probably way
- 18:26thank you we alady know the song sure Cure maybe maybe more so Cure,
- 18:36but like not really like like like are the singles that we're gonna ring like
- 18:41showcase as many sides of the record as possible. Yeah, the Scratches a
- 18:45couple of inches, so yeah, So I don't know if any one song
- 18:48really represents the record, which is nope. But I like that. I
- 18:52like that about it. There's a lot of experimentation. I think this.
- 18:57I think the record that we did before are like the commination of everything prior,
- 19:03and then this record is kind of like an extension of what we were
- 19:07kind of honing in on the last record. I was talking with my friend
- 19:11today about it, and Intel does this like TikTok method when they release processors
- 19:18that they like the starting on the socket and then the follow up, And
- 19:22I feel like this is kind of an extension of what we were trying to
- 19:23do with self tut. It was a very real Yeah, tell me to
- 19:33me, I think this rutter is pretty different. Yeah, it sounds different
- 19:36to me, Like, it definitely sounds different. It's just so re oriented
- 19:44in that way. I think you're actually does represent the record pret well,
- 19:47but just just like there's a lot more technicality and guitar wise in the right
- 19:52hand versus the left, like a lot more like reallythic technicality and the time
- 19:57signature, and there's a lot more a lot more stuff like that. Yeah,
- 20:06I don't know. Yeah, yeah, that's one stands on to my
- 20:07opinion like that. I suppose the main thing is it is a fool fans
- 20:12of the band, not the album. I guess that's the main thing.
- 20:17Well, then I'll be honest. Yeah, I mean, we have to
- 20:22write music that we want to play, you know, so at the end
- 20:26of the day, like we have to be happy with it. I think
- 20:29we're pretty I'm I'm excited for everybody to dive in, you know, so
- 20:33I hope they enjoy it. Yeah, And as we said, this is
- 20:37your sixth album, guys, so how has his sound changed and thrown from
- 20:41your debut Impulse of Q? And we found out during our rehearsals while we
- 20:49were playing an Impulse song of how different it was. My god, these
- 20:52were so different. Yeah, it's crazy, I mean kind of exploring the
- 20:57dynamics of like what we liked as musicians, me joining the band, and
- 21:03like how the songwriting has changed, as was all. Yeah, it's just
- 21:07like it's like big growth. Really when you're tithings changed or was that something
- 21:14you set out straight like was a pad thing? Or did I understand?
- 21:18I can actually say pretty pretty compel like that. It's it's never been a
- 21:22goal. So it's just kind of like a natural sort of shift, you
- 21:26know. Music tastes change. Yeah, time goes by just it's just kind
- 21:32of wo it's the way You're right, It's like it'll it'll just naturally change
- 21:37the time. But yeah, yeah, so you finish off these running shows
- 21:45that don't play the album comes out, what's the next Flayer. Off of
- 21:48that, I can imagine he's going to a crazy year Eddie. Yeah,
- 21:52can something's not like yes? Ye, More and more tourists probably fill the
- 22:00schedule for sure. Bolright guys, Well, thanks very much for a good
- 22:04time. The show starts tonight Fortitude Music or Brisbane. There's a sub tickets
- 22:08left and it goes all the way through. Where do we say? We
- 22:11got Perth, We've got Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide. So there's four good
- 22:15bands playing. It's not just you, guys, there's four shold bands.
- 22:18We've got a French band, We've got an American band, We've got Australian
- 22:21Jewish railings. So bring your fucking pomposts head banging, beautiful guys. Thanks
- 22:30very much for that. Appreciate apiate it, Thank you sweet, Thanks for
- 22:36guys, it was good there any hungry star. I don't think you've got
- 22:41anything on bank that you're like, there's a tab shop sight to the left.
- 22:45Yeah, well there's
