- 0:03Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed to kick start
- 0:06your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew Mcgibbon
- 0:10for August 6th. Today is National Root Beer
- 0:13Float Day, and is there a more perfectly nostalgic treat?
- 0:18The root beer float, or as some call it, the Brown Cow, is pure
- 0:23Americana in a glass. It's the magical moment when
- 0:27busy root beer meets creamy vanilla ice cream, creating
- 0:30something that's greater than the sum of its parks.
- 0:33The root beer float was invented by Frank J Wisner in 1893.
- 0:39He was the owner of Cripple Creek Brewing in Colorado.
- 0:43Legend has it that the snowy peaks of Cow Mountain inspired
- 0:46him to add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to his root beer,
- 0:50creating what he called a black cow.
- 0:52And just like that, a summer classic was born.
- 0:55There's something beautifully simple about a root beer float.
- 0:59It doesn't need fancy ingredients or complicated
- 1:01techniques, just two things that taste great together, combined
- 1:05with a little bit of busy magic and a lot of childhood wonder.
- 1:11Which brings us to today's quote from Jim Henson, the creator of
- 1:15The Muppets, who once said life's like the movie, write
- 1:20your own ending. Keep believing.
- 1:23Keep pretending. Now.
- 1:25Jim Henson understood something profound about keeping that
- 1:28childlike sense of wonder alive. He spent his career creating
- 1:32characters that reminded adults what it felt like to see the
- 1:36world through young eyes full of possibility, imagination, and,
- 1:41yes, simple pleasures. A root beer float is exactly
- 1:44that kind of simple pleasure. It's the kind of treat that
- 1:48makes you feel like a kid again, even if you're ordering it at a
- 1:52fancy restaurant or making it in your own kitchen at age 54.
- 1:58There's something about that first sip, the way the foam
- 2:01tickles your nose, the perfect balance of suede and fizzy that
- 2:05takes you right back to summer afternoons and simpler times.
- 2:09Henson's quote reminds us that we get to choose how our story
- 2:13goes. We can be the adult to say root
- 2:16beer floats are just sugar and calories, or we can be the adult
- 2:20to say let's make this Tuesday a little more magical and add some
- 2:25vanilla ice cream and root beer together.
- 2:29Not every Tuesday, just every once in a while because it's not
- 2:33very good for you. But the beauty of a root beer
- 2:36flowed, and life really is in the combination.
- 2:41Neither ingredient is revolutionary on its own, but
- 2:44together they create something that brings joy, nostalgia, and
- 2:48a little bit of effervescent wonder to an ordinary day.
- 2:52I remember making root beer floats when I was a kid, and
- 2:55they were magical. As I got older and I realized
- 2:59how much sugar is in pop or soda, I pretty much stopped
- 3:03drinking them, full stop. And diet pops too, because why
- 3:07substitute sugar if it's just replaced by chemicals?
- 3:11But for me, even now, when I see root beer floats on a menu, I
- 3:14feel a little nostalgia as I remember the fizzy, creamy
- 3:18goodness. So today, whether you actually
- 3:21make yourself a root beer float or just hold on to the memory of
- 3:24one, remember Jim Henson's wisdom.
- 3:28Keep believing in the simple magic around you.
- 3:30Keep pretending that ordinary moments can be extraordinary if
- 3:34you approach them with the right spirit.
- 3:37Life's better when you remember to add a little sweetness and a
- 3:40little fizz. That's going to do it.
- 3:43For today. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
- 3:45for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 3:48Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
