- 0:02Today we're going to be talking about the SpaceX Starship I FT-2
- 0:08launch that'll be happening from Boca Chica Starbase, Texas.
- 0:12We'll discuss the meticulous preparations of SpaceX has
- 0:15undertaken, the implications of the FA A's ongoing review
- 0:18following Starship's first Test flight, and what we can expect
- 0:21from this highly anticipated second launch attempt.
- 0:24But before we jump into the heart of the matter, a quick

- 0:40Now this Tuesday was a crucial day for SpaceX as a Starship
- 0:43rocket was stacked atop its super heavy booster in South
- 0:47Texas, marking the beginning of the final preparations for its
- 0:50second launch. Now, this occasion led to SpaceX
- 0:54founder Elon Musk to post on X or Twitter that Starship is
- 0:58ready to launch, awaiting FAA license approval and the mention
- 1:03of the FAA. The Federal Aviation
- 1:05Administration is noteworthy. The agency is still engaged in
- 1:08reviewing documents and data from Spacex's first attempt to
- 1:11launch Starship in April of 2023.
- 1:15That initial flight concluded about 90 seconds after liftoff
- 1:19due to engine difficulties and other problems with the booster.
- 1:22Now, as part of their ongoing evaluation, the FEA is looking
- 1:25into several aspects of this incident, such as the
- 1:28environmental impact at the launch site and the delayed
- 1:31activation of the Rockets flight termination system.
- 1:35And in response to these setbacks, SpaceX generated a
- 1:39quote mishap investigation report and submitted it to the
- 1:42FAA. The FAA in turn will highlight
- 1:45the corrective measures SpaceX must implement prior to its
- 1:48second test flight. The objective is to ensure the
- 1:51safety of not only property but also humans and wildlife in the
- 1:55vicinity of the South Texas launch site, which is close to
- 1:58both wetlands and the Gulf of Mexico.
- 2:01Now when probed for an update on this regulatory scrutiny and FAA
- 2:05spokesperson suggested that additional information could be
- 2:08forthcoming. In fact, on Wednesday at 6:00 PM
- 2:11Eastern, the FAA issued a statement indicating the SpaceX
- 2:15Starship mishap investigation remains open.
- 2:18We clarified that they won't authorize another Starship
- 2:21launch until SpaceX enacts the identified corrective actions
- 2:25and complies with all license modification prerequisites.
- 2:29Now, beyond the regulatory stuff, it's worth noting the
- 2:33SpaceX has been incredibly busy with preparations at the
- 2:37Starbase launch site. They've worked diligently to
- 2:39upgrade the ground systems in the rocket itself.
- 2:42For the second launch attempt. In the first flight, the absence
- 2:45of a sound suppression system caused significant structural
- 2:48damage, notably sending fragments of concrete from the
- 2:51launchpad, scattering across the vicinity of the Starbase
- 2:54location. And in order to mitigate this
- 2:57issue, SpaceX has constructed and tested a new water deluge
- 3:00and flame deflector system located under the Starship
- 3:03launch mount. Now, the SpaceX engineering team
- 3:06has also been occupied with enhancing the interstage area
- 3:09between the first stage rocket and the upper stage Starship
- 3:12vehicle, now referred to as a hot staging ring, and the aim is
- 3:16to enable the Starship upper stage engines to ignite even
- 3:19before the Super heavy first stage finishes its burn.
- 3:23Although this is an intricate operation, a successful
- 3:26execution could significantly boost the mass to orbit
- 3:29performance of this launch vehicle.
- 3:31And in preparation for the upcoming test flight, SpaceX has
- 3:34carried out two hot fire tests of the Booster 9 rocket and also
- 3:38ran tests on the Starship upper stage Ship 25.
- 3:41And both sets of hardware have mainly passed these trials and
- 3:44the next test flight, unlike commercial missions, will not
- 3:47carry any payloads or people. And the objective is to test the
- 3:51performance of the 33 Raptor rocket engines in the booster
- 3:55along with stage separation and the ignition of Starship 6
- 3:59engines. And should the flight proceed as
- 4:01planned, Starship will complete almost 3/4 of an orbit around
- 4:04Earth before making a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean north of
- 4:08Hawaiian Island of Kauai. Now while the exact flight path
- 4:12might still be under wraps pending FAA approval and other
- 4:16regulatory checks, the anticipated trajectory does give
- 4:19us plenty to talk about. Starship, once launched, aims to
- 4:23achieve a series of milestones that not only demonstrate the
- 4:25feasibility of the technology, but also provide invaluable data
- 4:29for future, more complex missions.
- 4:31The first part of the flight involves the ignition of Super
- 4:34heavy 33 Raptor rocket engines. These engines are expected to
- 4:38generate a massive amount of thrust, propelling the vehicle
- 4:40through Earth's atmosphere. It's crucial for all these
- 4:43engines to operate in synchronization, not just for
- 4:46liftoff but also as the vehicle ascends.
- 4:49The Super Heavy booster is the real workhorse here, designed to
- 4:52lift the entire rocket assembly until it reaches a designated
- 4:55altitude where stage separation occurs.
- 4:59Now upon reaching this altitude, a highly crucial part of the
- 5:03mission takes place. The stage separation is where
- 5:06the Super Heavy detaches from the Starship upper stage and at
- 5:09this point the upper stage, which has its own set of 6
- 5:12Raptor engines, ignites to continue the journey into space.
- 5:16Now this stage aims to carry Starship almost 3/4 of an orbit
- 5:19around Earth is a complex dance, the physics and engineering
- 5:22requiring precise timing and flawless execution from both
- 5:26hardware and software systems on board.
- 5:29And one of the most innovative features expected to be tested
- 5:32is the hot staging ring, designed to facilitate the
- 5:35seamless transition between the Super heavy booster and the
- 5:38Starship upper stage. And the hot staging ring would
- 5:41theoretically enable the upper stage engines to ignite even
- 5:45before super heavy has completed its burn and separated.
- 5:48This complicated maneuver of successfully executed would
- 5:51revolutionize the mass to orbit performance metrics, allowing
- 5:54heavier payloads to be carried to space with greater
- 5:57efficiency. And after completing nearly 75%
- 6:00of US orbit, the plan is for Starship to descend into the
- 6:03Pacific Ocean north of the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
- 6:07This segment of the mission is equally critical because it
- 6:10involves reentry into the atmosphere which subjects the
- 6:12spacecraft to extreme temperatures and stresses.
- 6:15A Starships heat shield and other protective measures will
- 6:18be put to the test here, essentially proving whether the
- 6:21vehicle is capable of enduring the harsh conditions it would
- 6:25face in an actual mission beyond Earth to orbit.
- 6:28Now let's talk about a Super Heavy booster.
- 6:30After separation, the design philosophy behind Super Heavy
- 6:33focuses on reusability. Post separation, Super Heavy
- 6:37will execute a controlled descent burn back to Earth in
- 6:40The booster aims to land vertically as a designated
- 6:43platform, a maneuver that SpaceX has perfected with its Falcon 9
- 6:47rockets. And achieving this with a Super
- 6:49Heavy booster would be another monumental milestone considering
- 6:53its enormous size and complexity.
- 6:55The booster is about 250 feet tall now.
- 6:59By studying each segment of the flight path in extreme detail,
- 7:02SpaceX aims to gather a treasure trove of data that would inform
- 7:06future missions, be a lunar landings, Marcus Expeditions, or
- 7:10even more ambitious yet to be announced adventures into the
- 7:13cosmos. And every piece of information,
- 7:16from engine performance and stage separation to reentry
- 7:19dynamics and splashdown is a puzzle piece in the grand scheme
