- 0:22SPEAKER_00: When it comes to the creative arts, there have always been two roles in society, those who create and those who criticize.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: The creators are the ones who make things.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: They make buildings, cars, computers, books, plays, speeches, movies, rockets, and so much more.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: The creators are the ones who move society forward.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: They invent, they design, and they use their creative powers to stick their necks out, to add value to others, and they also risk being criticized by the people who don't like what they do.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Critics, on the other hand, play a limited role in society.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: They're the ones who stay safely in the distance, and they spend most of their energy pointing out the flaws in other people's creative work.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: There have always been critics, of course, and they do have a certain value in culture.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, after all, we do need people who can offer intelligent reflection and commentary on culture.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: But make no mistake, this is not where the real action is.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: The real action lies in creating things.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: So which would you rather be?
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: The creator who makes things for the critics to comment on?
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Or would you rather be the critic who just rides the creator's coattails?
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: The French novelist Gustave Flaubert said, A man is a critic when he cannot be an artist in the same way that a man becomes an informer when he cannot be a soldier.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: That's pretty easy to be a critic.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: And why not?
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: You get to sit back and relax while other people do all the work, and then you get to offer your opinion and commentary, all while never taking one ounce of risk or lifting your finger to actually create something that's of any value.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: So I would say choose to be a creator.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Choose to be the one who puts in the work and adds value to society.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Choose to create with your words and through other means as well.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Don't fall into the trap of just being a critic.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question What kinds of things are you creating now and are you avoiding being just a critic?
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening, and I'll see you tomorrow.
