Kim: I apologize. We were just kind of getting our bearings and getting everyone in place. So we are here. Let me know, Kelly, if everyone can hear and if we are good. I know there's a little bit of a delay. I I do see the 14. Wow, there we are. Okay. Well, our first ever voice notes after dark live on YouTube. We did it. We didn't know if we could, but we did, and we did it. So we're very excited. And Danielle's book is out. We've been planning this for A month now, and the book is out, it's in the world, the audio is out, everyone is loving it. And so we are super excited to have you guys here and talk again because it kind of feels like we're getting the family back together. Yeah. Danielle: Family reunion. Kim: a little family reunion. And we all get to talk to each other now and yak about how amazing this book is. So This is Voiceless After Dark. This is where B's crazy brain and my mouth just kind of go together and turn into crazy madness. And people seem to seem to like it. All right. So that's good. we thank you guys. We have had bee: And we all get to. Kim: so much fun these first three episodes. We've gotten so much amazing feedback from having you all on, and it's been super great. So you guys are awesome. And If you want to, I think everyone who's here knows who you are, but if we'd like I would like for everyone to go around and just say who they are, what their character is, and what your favorite thing about your Echoes and Obsidian character is. And Danielle, you can go first. Danielle: thank you. Kim: Ladies first. Danielle: My name is Danielle Cookie. I am the author of Echoes and Obsidian. I also do all of the female voices as well as voice Rex and a couple demons. I think. I think I think I voiced two demons. Especially Kim: Mm. Danielle: the creepy Atlas: Mm-hmm. Danielle: Okay, there's a lot to be fair. Kim: There there's a lot. Atlas: So many demons. Danielle: I love them all so much. They were all so much fun to write. my favorite character to voice is probably I think Amity is I think Amity is too easy of an answer because she's very similar to me. So that one may be like an easy pass, but it was very fun to my god, no no no no no. I know exactly what I'm gonna say. And I told Atlas, I think Atlas I told you, I think last night or this morning, I can't remember. My favorite character was young Luca because Kim: Yeah. Danielle: I have two minds. bee: Yes! Danielle: And I was like sitting in my closet and I was like, okay, I can either ask one of the guys to do this or or I've seen enough anime. I know what a ten-year-old boy is supposed to sound like. And I was I like did this like creepy vo like not creepy. I did this voice and I did it in one take for both lines. I was very happy and very impressed with myself. Kim: Wow, that's amazing. Danielle: Thank you. bee: I loved it. Kim: Okay, Atlas, you wanna go next? Atlas: Sure, I'm Atlas. Danielle: Yeah. Kim: Who we also found out is controlling whales today, apparently. Good to see you guys. Kim: you actually got here just in time because we were just going around introducing everybody and talking about your character in the book. So hi, I'm Kim. That's B. Dolph: Awesome. Hi. Hi Kim. Kim: Welcome to our show. Thank you so much for being Dolph: All right. Kim: here. We appreciate you. if you would like, you can introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what you like about Luca. Dolph: Hmm, okay. hi guys, if you don't know me, my name's Dolph. I play Kim: Yeah. Dolph: Luca in Echoes in Obsidian, which was a great joy. Luca is a great romantic interest character. he's sort of sort of the dark horse, dangerous type with a soft core that you that you grow to love throughout the story. But yeah, it was it was a lot of fun to play and hopefully I was able to bring that vibe across in my performance. Kim: Definitely did. Definitely did. Yes, Luca is what we call in the book world. We call those German shepherds. They're golden Dolph: Yeah. Danielle: yeah, I Kim: retrievers, but they got a little bite to you know. Danielle: Which never even thought of until you pointed it out, Kim. I had to look it up. Kim: Yes, yes. Danielle: I like, What the fuck is a German Shepherd boyfriend? And then I saw it and I was like, Well that Kim: It's it's a fairly new term. I have adopted it as one of my favorites. So Danielle: No, but you're right. He is. It is. Kim: It's perfect. Yeah, it's perfect. Perfect. Okay, well, everyone has introduced themselves. So Danielle, there is probably not very many people here who have we have 27 people here. my gosh. Okay. There is probably not very many people here who have not at least read or started to read the book since it just came out yesterday. But I wanted to give you a chance to give us a little like echoes pitch. Like tell us a little bit about why people should read Echoes. Danielle: Yes, of course. So, the audiobook came out yesterday. The print has been out since Kim: Yes. Danielle: last October. Echoes and Obsidian is about Amity, a book talk loving barista who meets a mysterious man named Luca. Turns out he's actually a demon hunting witch that has been searching for the demon that stole her memories, and he has until midnight on Halloween to find them, or they're lost forever. Can you tell I've said this a million Kim: I mean, Danielle: times? Kim: if you don't want to want if you don't want to read it after that, then I don't know what to tell you. I don't know how to help you. So why, Danielle, was it important for you to include these wonderful creators with you in this audiobook and have this kind of AE representation in in your book? Danielle: So I actually wrote Echoes and Flynn would know this. He was like the first person to ever know this would be an audiobook. But I wrote Echoes and Obsidian, knowing that I always wanted it to be an audiobook and I had a Audio Erotica actor in mind while writing it. And I I did Kim: that's right. I forgot about Danielle: and I I drafted the email and I messaged Flynn and I was like Hey, can you like read over this email for me? Because like I wanna show that I'm really like appreciative of this guy's work and I'm a fan of this guy's work, but I also don't want to sound creepy. So, like, can you make sure I'm not sounding like creepy? And he did, and thank you, by the way, again. And I sent the guy, I sent his manager this email, and they got back to me and was like, Hey, so he's actually gonna be like really busy. So Maybe later. Kim: Forever. Danielle: And I was like, okay, that's fine. I've bee: Hahaha! Danielle: I'm okay. That's cool. And then Yeah. Kim: Didn't ask you when just like no, he's busy, just any time. Danielle: And I didn't even give like I gave like a very loose time frame. I'm like, hey, I'm planning an audiobook. It's auditioning at the end of the year. It's now July or June. And Kim: We're busy. Danielle: they they were like, no, they're going to be busy. And I was like, okay, that's that's fine. And then I was messaging Miranda and I was like, I don't know what I'm gonna do. I only have this guy in mind. I don't know what to do with this. And she was like, well, why don't you ask these men? And she sent me like a list of people to ask. And I I heard a couple of Dolph, I heard a couple of your audios through Quinn, and I was like, that's really interesting. Like I would have never have thought of Dolph. And then she She sent me Atlas's name. And I was like, who the hell is this guy? I don't know this guy. I bee: you Atlas: Ha ha Danielle: don't know what it's his. Kim: Who's this Joker? Danielle: and then and then it was right after you switched from Silky Whispers, I think it was called. Yeah, so Atlas: Yeah. Yeah. Danielle: I went onto your page or went onto your profile and I was like, I have heard this guy. He was just under a different name. That's why I don't recognize him. And then I auditioned a couple other people. Lux actually Did the human voices only with me the year before. so he read a little snippet, so I auditioned with him. And then Flynn was the very last person I asked because I really thought he would be good for this one character. And I originally was like, okay, so you're actually, well, Flynn saved Kim: What does that say about Flint? Danielle: the best for last, you know. Flynn (He/Him): Nothing good. Kim: I'm just joking. Flynn (He/Him): Hmm. Danielle: So Flynn was actually going to play two characters. And while I was auditioning for for Rune and for Dramar, in I think it was like in Luca script, because everyone I think I had audition for Luca. And at the end I was like, okay, say this line in like a demon voice, like make it creepy. And I forgot I asked that. So I was listening to Flynn's audition and it was really quiet. And I was like, okay, cool, like my headphones died or something, or it stopped. And then all of a sudden he starts speaking in this really creepy voice. And I'm just like, What like what is that? And then I remembered what I did. And then I listened to Atlas's audition. And I listened to his demon voice. And I was like, Great, well, all my plans are fucking ruined. Cool. So I separated them into two parts because I was like, I have I I I need to have this guy's voice. Like I can't not have Atlas be this demon. Kim: I need both of them. Yes. Danielle: And that is how it happens. Kim: Yeah. Well, you did great. You Danielle: Very very long story short. Kim: did good. And all these voices sound so amazing together. We B and I love this book so much. We can't stop yapping about it. We've been yapping about it ever since we looked at ever since we listened. And all the people in the chat loved it too. So it's a great, great story. I've said this before. Perfect fall story, perfect like pumpkin spice getting ready for spooky season book. It's perfect. so Dolph, was this your first audiobook, like long form audiobook, or have you done other audiobooks? Dolph: yeah, this was absolutely my first audiobook. So that's one of the reasons I was really excited to jump in and see what it was about. obviously I've done narrative stories that were you know, on the spicier scale of things, but it was really refreshing change of pace to dig into something that was you know, had more literary quality and less spiciness. and I just really liked Daniel's writing and yeah, immediately I was I I don't think it took me too long to decide that this was definitely a project I wanted to be part of. And you know, the process was it was a different type of challenge doing long form like that. so I enjoyed that. And but yeah, it was it was my first My first venture into audiobook territory. Kim: think you want to do more now? Are you hooked on audio books? Dolph: well, it's not a huge priority for me, but if something bee: you Kim: Yeah. Dolph: really cool like this project comes along, then it's definitely something I'd be considering. Kim: Yeah. Yeah, it's it's more time consuming. I think Atlas and I were talking about we were talking about that with Atlas last time. It definitely takes more time from out of you guys' schedule. Atlas: Yeah. Kim: So it's definitely harder for you to keep up with all of the work that you're already doing and you know, throw a, you know, eight hundred page book in there. It's it's a little difficult. Danielle: Yeah. And Dolph's part is hard because Dolph also has to play a lot of characters. Especially I was really especially Kim: So much. Danielle: I was really like worried about Alex because there's so there's so many chapters where it's just Luca and Alex talking back and forth and I was like, Okay you did. Kim: Yes. And you did so good. Like I literally had to ask I messaged B and I was like, okay, is is he doing both of these characters? Because you did. You differentiated them so well. And Dolph: I tried, yeah, thank you. Kim: no, it was great. It was so good. Dolph: Can I just say, Danielle, Kim: Okay. Dolph: your voice acting, you have voice acting chops of your own, you know? I didn't know what to expect. I was like in the beginning I was like, hmm, Danielle: Thank you. bee: She does. So good. Dolph: I was like, you know, that's a bold choice to narrate the main character, you know, and be the author and everything, but you really do have both skills. So I was really impressed to see that. Danielle: So there's also a lot of fun. Kim: Yeah. Daniel is amazing. You know we love you. You know we love you. You're so awesome. And this book is so fun. I think we've how many and that I don't know. We've we've introduced so many people to this book that we that are reading it now. I think there's so many people that are in the middle and they don't even know. so when you figured out who was narrating the book and you were like you've got your you got your people like lined up, you know. Dolph's gonna be Luca, you know Flynn's gonna be Rin. And you're writing book two. Did those things change how you write your next your next part to the story? Danielle: no, because by the time I was voice casting, the by the time I was casting for Echoes and Obsidian, I was already done with Secrets and Cyan. It has affected book three. And Kim: Okay. Danielle: I actually it's Atlas, you probably don't remember, but I think I like was listening to something and I texted Atlas and I'm like, by the way, I'm rewriting this scene for you. Like, yeah, I like this is gonna happen and he's just like, Okay, cool. Kim: Yep. What else? Danielle: Whatever. But like don't worry about it for another like year. You're fine. Atlas: Right. Kim: Yeah, you got time. Danielle: I've I've done that so many times. Atlas: I will have forgotten, but Danielle: Yeah. Kim: No, Atlas is gonna go, I'm busy. I don't know when it is, but I'm busy. Danielle: Forever. Kim: Forever. Atlas: You can email my manager, Kim: Let me know. Danielle: Goes to a spam inbox. Thank you for your email. Atlas: Just for you. Danielle: Just dedicated to me. Kim: So when we had you on Atlas, I know you said that you were excited to do this because you got to be a little unhinged and a little crazy. And that was what kind of drew you to it. but I don't know bee: unhinged. Kim: yes, yes. Okay, okay, a lot. I I'm Atlas: Ha ha ha Danielle: Just a little nothing too extreme. Kim: just trying to be nice. Everybody got mad at me for the ginger comment, so I'm trying to tone it down, okay? Danielle: Well apparently Flynn can verify bee: you Danielle: that genders do in fact do not have a soul. And I chest plan, so I mean, like it's a pretty done deal. Kim: So what Flynn, what made you wanted to to do this book? I know that I don't know if we asked you that when we talked to you the other the the last time. Flynn (He/Him): Don't remember. we we Kim: We got kind of sidetracked talking about a lot of different things. Flynn (He/Him): that conversation went so many places. Kim: So sideways. Flynn (He/Him): well I'd wanted to do to dip the toe in audiobooks for a minute. so this was a fun, a fun project, and I just it's I don't know, supernatural romance. They it just checked so many boxes and you get to just dive in. And have fun. I'm I'm a big fan of living outside of realism and like not being bound by the everyday. and I think this has such fantastical elements with such grounded people, I think, which is what's great about it. yeah, there's there's demons, there's well, which I mean, I don't know, there could be demons out there, who knows? there's magic, there's all that stuff, but then like these very Very human characters that you know, I think, is is one of the strengths of the book. Kim: And Danielle's writing, I mean, you the way that you wrote this book, it just makes it so relatable to so many different people. The mental health aspect of it, you know, everything that you drew into Amity's character really makes it so relatable to a lot of readers, women especially. So we love that. We talked to Flynn about that, about how important that aspect is of this book. So I know it was really important to you to have that in there. And I think you did. an amazing job of representing, you know, that side of things. So kudos to Danielle: Thank you. Yeah, that was a that was super I don't know why I have to keep coughing all the time. That was it's 'cause Kim: 'Cause you're talking. It's I do it all the time. Danielle: you're yeah, it was really it was very important to for me to showcase not only MD's anxiety, but I also which I actually found out from reading a book. I I actually was reading a I think I was read it's it's a Glenn, I've told you about this book. It's called The Pack for Autumn, and the main character has this this condition called PMDD. It is a condition that basically amplifies all your system si symptoms of PMS. So it's like extreme depression, Kim: Mm-hmm. Danielle: there's extreme anxiety, there's and there's also because amity is also not a plus size character, but she is not a thin character either. So it was important to highlight her body dysmorphia that I'm sure everyone in the everyone in the world, but also specifically everyone, every woman who grew up in the mid to early two thousands understands. so Kim: Yes, maybe Danielle: I'm really I'm really happy that those those came across and that that everyone is relating to that because you are And I think I wrote this in the the author's note, but it didn't transfer into the audiobook. But it is really important to understand that although you do have these symptoms and you do feel isolated, it is one, not your fault, two, you are not alone, and three, like you are not a burden. Where is it? Kim: What? Okay, B, what do we got from the chat? What do we got going on? bee: Okay, one from Kelly. What inspired or drove Danielle to write the story? Danielle: I have been a very big fan of we're facing the wrong wall, so you can't really see. But I'm a really there we go. I'm a really big fan of Halloween stuff. I made that little ghost painting a while ago with plaster. It's actually super easy. Cost me like five bucks. Do not buy the $60 one at Michael's. Do it. It's a scam. so I I love all things Halloween. I'm a big fan of spooky season. I grew up in Connecticut, so I loved fall in Connecticut. If you ever visit, either go in the late summer or the fall. That's the only times where it's pretty, unless you go in winter, but also you'll freeze. so I I have always really liked like the supernatural stuff. I would always watch Sabrina the Teenage Witch, the chilling adventures of Sabrina, Kiki's Delivery Service is my favorite studio Ghibli movie. I'm just very like I do spells all the time. I actually did one this morning. That's so funny. so I have always liked the kind of macabre things like that. I was scrolling on TikTok one day and I was at work and I worked the front desk in a HR department actually. This will be really funny later I promise. Kim: Yeah. Danielle: and And I was scrolling on my phone and a video came up and I was like, This was posted a year ago. And I was like, cool, I still like it. So like, like and it was this it was from this artist named Starbite and it had their O C character, their original character. And they had this like this like skeleton mask on. It was like half a skeleton mask, but it was like made out of like this haze and they were fighting like ghosts. like in a city. And I was like, that's really cool. That's like super cool. I like that. And then I'm a huge fan of anime. So I I was watching I just finished Demon Slayer around that time. And one day I was just like the 'cause again I had a voice actor in mind and I was just like I wonder if I just wrote like a sassy kind of asshole character. And I just like wrote three separate scenes and I was like, that's cool. And then I was dog sitting that night. This is a lot of information. I was dog sitting that night. I was scared. I had all the lights on and I was watching Scream for the first time in my life. And I just had my computer and I started making an outline. And I wrote I wrote five different summaries. And then from those five summaries I picked one of them and then I wrote an entire outline about it. And then I spent that whole time when I worked at that HR job. at the front desk writing this book. And it was great. I had so much fun. Kim: I remember now. I remember now. Yeah. Danielle has every literary achievement and goal mapped out for the next like five years, ten years I think already. how's your calendar, Danielle? How's your calendar? let's say hi. They I I I have a lot of goodies planned for everyone. I don't have a physical store, so this is the only way I can like anyone can have gossip like character bookmarks. I also designed a new rune character bookmark, which very excited about. It's very sinister and I really like it. It's like really it's like you really won't trust I won't tell you. I won't tell you. You're gonna have to get it. It's I don't know, you're Kim: Sinister, why? Why? Why sinister? Rune is not Rune's not a bad guy. bee: Yeah, why is the room bookmark sinister? Flynn (He/Him): Yeah. And then I also worked with Flynn (He/Him): Yeah. Danielle: this perfumer who I've met at an anime convention like five years ago. I've been seeing him ever since. I go every year. I always buy a perfume. And I have a specifically scented Luca perfume. He smells so good. I love it Kim: Yeah. Danielle: so much. I've been wearing it like every day for two weeks. It's so good. it smells like sea salt, sandalwood, peony, because those are his favorite flowers. Autumn harvest wreath, a wash of leather, and night air. So it smells very masculine and it smells so good. Kim: That sounds great. Danielle: But the only issue is Secrets and Cyan's Kickstarter is unfortunately still under review, so it is not live yet. Which I was devastated to find out this morning. And the first person to find out was B. Because you commented bee: Yeah. Danielle: and I was like, what do you mean it's not live? Like, what do you mean? bee: I was like, what? I've been refreshing. It just won't do the thing. Danielle: Yes, so I've been Kim: I know. Danielle: I've been refreshing the page all day. it will the latest it will be active. is August fifth. That is the final day when it will be active. But like I was really trying to figure it out. And I love that mystery aspect of the book and, you know, kind of how it it lends itself to so many different theories and so many little mysteries. And, you know, it's gonna be one of those things I think is like even when we do find out. little pieces of things, there's always gonna be more. So Danielle: gonna have so much fun. Like there are like hints throughout the book, but like with the first book, like when Amity like first meets Luca and he like he says like little like little things happen and like if you're doing like a first read through you won't catch them. If you do a reread, you're like, that's because of this and this is because of that and that's why he reacted this way. And just like a bunch of like when he No, I can't say that. I can say this. And when bee: you Danielle: when when Amity first first meets Luca in the coffee shop now when she runs into him, he asks he's like you don't remember me is what he says. And that's because she actually doesn't remember him. And he knows she doesn't remember him. So it's like kind of like a double hitter.
