- 0:00Speaker 1: Excited to have these guys in the studio because last
- 0:02Speaker 1: time we were in studio, we only got half of
- 0:05Speaker 1: the greatness that.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Is the Van Perry.
- 0:07Speaker 1: No disrespect, but glad to have both of y'all here
- 0:10Speaker 1: this time.
- 0:10Speaker 2: How are you good to be here? Thank you so much.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Listen, I want to ask, we're hanging out with Kimberly
- 0:15Speaker 1: and Johnny. You put out an epic song a long
- 0:20Speaker 1: time ago, and If I Die Young, Yes, we're talking
- 0:24Speaker 1: about new music now, but I want to ask the
- 0:27Speaker 1: weight of a massive song like that, does it become
- 0:31Speaker 1: a gift in a curse? Because it's like, oh, we
- 0:35Speaker 1: had this massive song abroad US success, awards, disatulation, but
- 0:39Speaker 1: it's also hard to break, like what are you gonna
- 0:43Speaker 1: die young?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Follow it up? But yeah, it's almost like what do
- 0:46Speaker 2: they call that type casting or something? I feel like
- 0:49Speaker 2: the most scary If I Die Young was when it
- 0:51Speaker 2: was time to write our second album. You know, it
- 0:54Speaker 2: was on our first project, so it's like, how are
- 0:55Speaker 2: we going to like make sure that the future feels
- 0:59Speaker 2: as big as the present, And then we just started
- 1:03Speaker 2: to write here in Nashville, you know, and then also
- 1:05Speaker 2: listen to songs because we love our songwriter friends in town,
- 1:08Speaker 2: and somebody sent us better Dig too, And then it
- 1:11Speaker 2: was like, oh, that's how you do that, you know,
- 1:13Speaker 2: you just keep finding great songs that feel like they
- 1:15Speaker 2: are coming from the same narrator, the same authentic voice.
- 1:18Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Well, and when it comes to that, you guys have
- 1:22Speaker 1: different versions career wise now. And obviously we were CMA
- 1:27Speaker 1: Fest two years ago.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Yes, was that when I was like very pregnant with
- 1:31Speaker 2: our son.
- 1:33Speaker 1: The fact that you were out in June was crazy.
- 1:38Speaker 2: He was, You're right, You're not wrong.
- 1:40Speaker 1: It was crazy, but like, were you here with her
- 1:42Speaker 1: that I was because she it was just downstairs here. Yeah,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and you, I don't know, It's like, no, you didn't
- 1:49Speaker 1: give less, you know what I mean?
- 1:52Speaker 2: Well, you know, our son is two years old now
- 1:54Speaker 2: and he can finally wrap his head around a little
- 1:56Speaker 2: bit what we do like for our job. And I
- 1:58Speaker 2: always tell him. I show him pictures of that CMA
- 2:01Speaker 2: Fest and I was like, you were playing with Mama
- 2:03Speaker 2: on stage, you know, I was so crazy while he
- 2:09Speaker 2: was in you. Yeah.
- 2:11Speaker 1: So when it comes to this new version of the band, Perry,
- 2:15Speaker 1: what brought you? Yes, I'll start with Kimberly. What brought
- 2:18Speaker 1: you back to like, yep, hey, the solo thing was cool,
- 2:22Speaker 1: but like, yes.
- 2:24Speaker 2: We're calling this season two. I was so ready for
- 2:25Speaker 2: season two. At the Van Perry, I think I'm a
- 2:28Speaker 2: bandgirl at heart. I love to collaborate, you know, The
- 2:31Speaker 2: Van Perry, Johnny, my baby daddy and husband's and the
- 2:33Speaker 2: band now my brothers in the OG season. It's always
- 2:37Speaker 2: been a family band. And for me, as I always say,
- 2:40Speaker 2: as like the narrator, as the front woman of that band,
- 2:43Speaker 2: I'm a very different artist and my brain is flipped
- 2:47Speaker 2: in a different direction as the lead singer the Van
- 2:50Speaker 2: Perry versus Kimberly Perry Music. I'm so grateful I got
- 2:53Speaker 2: to make solo work and and you know, tour on
- 2:56Speaker 2: that for a second. But every night I was on stage,
- 2:58Speaker 2: I was like, I just missed my band, you know.
- 3:01Speaker 2: And I think the band Perry it's a Southern Gothic
- 3:04Speaker 2: eat those we have a lot of like poetry in
- 3:07Speaker 2: those lyrics. We love a good punchline as well, you know,
- 3:10Speaker 2: there's some quippiness about it. And I just love who
- 3:14Speaker 2: I am in this band. I couldn't wait to get
- 3:16Speaker 2: back to it.
- 3:18Speaker 1: What does this and Johnny will go to you. What
- 3:21Speaker 1: does this version of the band Perry witnessing the first rendition,
- 3:25Speaker 1: witnessing your wife's solo ventures. Now now knowing that this
- 3:30Speaker 1: is like a part two, what are you seeing from
- 3:32Speaker 1: your vision that's different from the first the first go round?
- 3:36Speaker 3: I think the energy, I think, I mean, I think
- 3:38Speaker 3: TVP's always been known for that, like electric on stage.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Here we go. Every side of the stage is going
- 3:44Speaker 3: to get covered. Everyone's going to put in seven miles
- 3:47Speaker 3: on a stage here. Why everyone put on your fitbit.
- 3:49Speaker 2: That's literal by the way we used to.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Get on stage. And I just think right now the band,
- 3:55Speaker 3: there's a lot of guys you know, know in Texas
- 3:57Speaker 3: and Dallas, Austin that we've kind of pulled into Nashville
- 4:00Speaker 3: and are just really like putting on that.
- 4:01Speaker 2: That's been a really cool thing for Johnny to bring
- 4:04Speaker 2: to the band. So he grew up down in Texas.
- 4:06Speaker 2: He's our Texas Boy. Our tours called Psycho Rodeo Tour.
- 4:09Speaker 2: He is the rodeo of Psycho Rodeo, which of course
- 4:12Speaker 2: lets me be the Psycho.
- 4:16Speaker 1: I was gonna say so true.
- 4:17Speaker 2: I'm you know, I'm proud of it. I'm a card
- 4:19Speaker 2: carrying member of the Psyco Girls Club. But Johnny, we
- 4:23Speaker 2: met all these cool musicians around him and all his
- 4:25Speaker 2: friend group down in Texas when I fell in love
- 4:28Speaker 2: with him, and so it was like, hey, do you
- 4:29Speaker 2: think they would ever play in our bands when we
- 4:31Speaker 2: tour lives. That's been a cool thing that you've brought in. Yeah,
- 4:35Speaker 2: come to Tennessee please, they've most of them have moved
- 4:37Speaker 2: to town.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Now. Yeah, that's what you do, is you come, you
- 4:41Speaker 1: move somewhere and then just try and bring your child uproot.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Everybody. Yeah, that's the home for me.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:47Speaker 2: We have this amazing speaking of our toddler, this amazing
- 4:49Speaker 2: babysitter here in Nashville. We live in East Tennessee over
- 4:52Speaker 2: in the mountains, and I keep going like, just move,
- 4:54Speaker 2: just move you and your whole family to where our
- 4:57Speaker 2: family is and we can all be one big family together.
- 5:00Speaker 2: It is yes, you know Charles Manson vibes, I get it.
- 5:04Speaker 1: But we just don't have kool aid.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Yeah, different, not at all at all. It's at least cherry.
- 5:10Speaker 2: It's not great. You know.
- 5:13Speaker 1: When you think of the music you were making by
- 5:16Speaker 1: yourself a couple of years ago. Yeah, how do you
- 5:19Speaker 1: keep that separate from the band Pairy because the band
- 5:22Speaker 1: Parry is you. Yeah, but then you're you? So how
- 5:24Speaker 1: do you make sure those two things got to live
- 5:26Speaker 1: live there?
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yes, I think I'm just not a mental multitasker. I'm
- 5:31Speaker 2: definitely not a creative multitasker. I'm always all in and
- 5:34Speaker 2: what's right in front of me. And I always say,
- 5:37Speaker 2: you know, I'm like an environmentalist. Wherever I'm in in
- 5:40Speaker 2: my environment and my ethos is where my brain and
- 5:43Speaker 2: my heart are engaged. And I think the moment that
- 5:47Speaker 2: it came time to flip that vand Perry switch back,
- 5:49Speaker 2: which came last January, played our first show back from Hiatus.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Our little small town in East Tennessee had been hit
- 5:55Speaker 2: by Hurricane Helene and they were trying to raise money
- 5:58Speaker 2: for all of our displaced families, and so Johnny and I,
- 6:00Speaker 2: who of course live in Greenville, we called it Read.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Neil was working on a solo project, so timing went
- 6:04Speaker 2: right for him. On Joshuad Tree, I was like, Read,
- 6:07Speaker 2: get on a plane, like we've got to go support
- 6:09Speaker 2: our hometown. And from that moment on it was just
- 6:12Speaker 2: such a blast of a show. I had missed it
- 6:14Speaker 2: so much and from that moment it was like, oh,
- 6:16Speaker 2: this in my heart and in my head it's like
- 6:19Speaker 2: Van Perry, let's go to the future.
- 6:21Speaker 1: You know, when you look at the success you had early,
- 6:25Speaker 1: and that's what a lot of and I'd like to
- 6:27Speaker 1: bring up because a lot of country music fans don't
- 6:29Speaker 1: get success.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Is great, but it is so hard to be Yeah.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Same, So when you see that early success, right, the
- 6:37Speaker 1: better big, the better dig two if I die young.
- 6:41Speaker 1: But then knowing like not every song is a massive yes,
- 6:45Speaker 1: and you think it's hard to get a first big song,
- 6:48Speaker 1: a second, a third, a fourth, So how do you stay?
- 6:52Speaker 1: I'd imagine that can be like a kick in the teeth,
- 6:56Speaker 1: right to have to So how do you stay? How
- 6:58Speaker 1: did you stay motivated during that time enough to be
- 7:00Speaker 1: like right the.
- 7:03Speaker 2: You know, I feel like, as you said, with success,
- 7:06Speaker 2: two things happen, it's like this amazing thing. And then
- 7:08Speaker 2: I was just also terrified at the same time that
- 7:10Speaker 2: it would just all fall apart at any minute and
- 7:13Speaker 2: all of a sudden, your entire you know, world, everybody
- 7:16Speaker 2: has an opinion on how we're going to maintain that success,
- 7:18Speaker 2: and that became a little complex for me. I felt
- 7:21Speaker 2: like some of the songs maybe that brought us to
- 7:23Speaker 2: the dance in the first place. We were diverting a little.
- 7:25Speaker 2: And you have to understand, this is a season when
- 7:27Speaker 2: broke country was coming in like a tidal wave, right,
- 7:30Speaker 2: and so the instinct is like, how do you Yeah,
- 7:32Speaker 2: I wrote how do you like? Compete with bro Country?
- 7:36Speaker 2: And I think there was a moment where it's like,
- 7:38Speaker 2: we don't. We don't have to compete. We do what
- 7:39Speaker 2: we do and that's working. I think now looking back
- 7:42Speaker 2: with hindsight of all of the years of my career
- 7:45Speaker 2: and all the songs they've got to put out. First
- 7:47Speaker 2: of all, I've touched the top of that mountain. I
- 7:49Speaker 2: know what that feels like. I've also been at the
- 7:51Speaker 2: very bottom of the pool. You know, we're right where
- 7:52Speaker 2: the drain is. Of gotten to touch that part of
- 7:54Speaker 2: this career as well, and it is about the journey
- 7:57Speaker 2: of both halves of that and not losing your mind
- 7:59Speaker 2: in the middle of it. You know, music is volatile.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Everybody has an opinion about it. They're going to be
- 8:03Speaker 2: great songs, they are going to be mediocre songs. Your
- 8:06Speaker 2: legacy is what you do with each creative moment and
- 8:08Speaker 2: how they work together and in the band Perry. Some
- 8:11Speaker 2: of those were meant to be what I'm calling like
- 8:13Speaker 2: band Perry Underground, Like we did this Coordinates project, you know,
- 8:16Speaker 2: and I had black hair and like you know, bangs
- 8:19Speaker 2: at the time.
- 8:19Speaker 3: I don't college.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah, we got a college and I'm proud of it.
- 8:23Speaker 2: You know. Oh gosh, I know nobody even Garth, even Garth. Yeah,
- 8:30Speaker 2: but you have all those seasons and you embrace them.
- 8:32Speaker 2: I'm just so happy to be back home. I'm happy
- 8:34Speaker 2: to be back in this family band and bring these
- 8:36Speaker 2: songs on stage that I've always loved.
- 8:39Speaker 1: You know, so and correct me if I'm wrong. But
- 8:43Speaker 1: that first version of the band Parry, did you feel
- 8:46Speaker 1: like you were chasing things more? And listen, everybody learns
- 8:52Speaker 1: at some point chasing things, yeah, does not fulfill you
- 8:55Speaker 1: when you catch them. Now, So has that has that
- 8:58Speaker 1: changed your view of what will measure success? Of chapter two?
- 9:02Speaker 2: I think the measure of success for me has always
- 9:05Speaker 2: been and is now being relevant. I think how we
- 9:08Speaker 2: get to those points. Maybe I would challenge some of
- 9:11Speaker 2: my ideas over the years. Although all you can do
- 9:14Speaker 2: is sort of put one foot in front of the
- 9:15Speaker 2: other and keep walking. In that direction. But I think
- 9:18Speaker 2: it's been very important for me in this season too
- 9:20Speaker 2: to really honor the nostalgia of you know, the Fida
- 9:24Speaker 2: Young's a Better Dig two the first two projects. This
- 9:26Speaker 2: is PS the third album we've ever worked on in full, right,
- 9:31Speaker 2: so like what you guys heard in our first LP
- 9:34Speaker 2: and Pioneer, those are the only full projects that we've
- 9:36Speaker 2: ever put out as the band Parry. So for me,
- 9:39Speaker 2: it's about honoring where we've come from and then being
- 9:41Speaker 2: perfectly seated in twenty twenty six, perfectly authentic to the
- 9:45Speaker 2: culture that we live in, the human beings that we are,
- 9:48Speaker 2: and how we like to come unhinged on stage.
- 9:52Speaker 1: And I want to talk because the single that is
- 9:56Speaker 1: coming out and will be out by the time this airs,
- 10:00Speaker 1: so good speak right, I want to I want to
- 10:05Speaker 1: touch real quick on this new version of the band
- 10:07Speaker 1: Perry once again, Johnny. Obviously you you are newer to
- 10:12Speaker 1: the journey, right for sure? How do you how do
- 10:16Speaker 1: you and your spot like respect where where it's been
- 10:20Speaker 1: and where it's going, but also like still fulfilled like
- 10:24Speaker 1: what you need to as a musician.
- 10:26Speaker 3: I think the cool part about the band Perry is
- 10:28Speaker 3: it is a Southern gothic country rock band. I think
- 10:31Speaker 3: there's some of like Kimberly Read and Neil living in Mobile, Alabama, Jackson, Mississippi.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Some of that Southern rock is kind of like webbed
- 10:38Speaker 3: into some of the instrumentation East Tennessee Banjos Mando's like,
- 10:43Speaker 3: we have all the instrumentation represented, but we have the
- 10:46Speaker 3: low end on the base thumping along to give you
- 10:48Speaker 3: some of that feeling of southern rock. I think with
- 10:50Speaker 3: my rock background, it's been really sweet to just see
- 10:52Speaker 3: it feel pretty organic. Yeah, the catalog has just been
- 10:56Speaker 3: I mean, playing Mandlin on Better Dick two, it's just
- 10:58Speaker 3: so fun, chainsaw rips, and then I'm like, here we go,
- 11:00Speaker 3: let's push. Like it's just it's such a fun catalog
- 11:02Speaker 3: to play. I'm just here for the energy. I'm like,
- 11:05Speaker 3: let's go.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Uh So the new single is out Friday, funny enough
- 11:10Speaker 1: Valentine's Day and it works that way.
- 11:12Speaker 2: You love how we did that.
- 11:13Speaker 1: I mean it's I would ask, but I try not
- 11:17Speaker 1: to ask dumb questions. It's so good and not that
- 11:23Speaker 1: and I say that like I don't want to sound
- 11:25Speaker 1: like what did you think it would be? What? But like, wow,
- 11:30Speaker 1: what a what a great reintroduction for who you guys
- 11:36Speaker 1: are and where you're at.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Thank you, and we felt like Psychological was that perfect
- 11:40Speaker 2: song for that. I think it. I always feel like
- 11:42Speaker 2: it's like the kid's sister to Better Dig Too, Better
- 11:45Speaker 2: Dick Do was like a very serious, you know, passionate,
- 11:48Speaker 2: delusional love song. And I do feel like we have
- 11:51Speaker 2: some evolution and psychological in the fact that we're not like,
- 11:54Speaker 2: we're not out here killing a guy, We're not even
- 11:56Speaker 2: threatening to in this one. You know, we're just like,
- 11:58Speaker 2: I am so obsessed with you, Please be obsessed with
- 12:01Speaker 2: me too, and then if not right, and then if
- 12:06Speaker 2: not crazy?
- 12:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:09Speaker 1: By the way, had this song come out early Red Flag.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Parasol? What do we keep saying? Red Flags? Does it's
- 12:18Speaker 2: like confetti?
- 12:23Speaker 1: Yeah? Holy god, that's good. You You guys are working
- 12:30Speaker 1: with producer Dan Huff, Yes. I don't think guys like
- 12:34Speaker 1: Dan get mentioned a lot in like mainstream conversation, especially
- 12:38Speaker 1: for country fans or people that come to shows. Uh,
- 12:42Speaker 1: this dude is.
- 12:44Speaker 2: So good at what he does. He's the beast.
- 12:46Speaker 1: He has built houses, He's built neighborhoods off of great ideas. Right,
- 12:52Speaker 1: Why was it important to work with him to get
- 12:54Speaker 1: this new version of you guys out.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Dan just never misses.
- 12:58Speaker 3: You know.
- 12:58Speaker 2: I think the job of the producer is to really
- 13:01Speaker 2: be the liaison between the songwriter and the artist and
- 13:04Speaker 2: the audience, Like how are we going to perfectly translate
- 13:07Speaker 2: this and the way that we intend to and help
- 13:10Speaker 2: it just be like butter in somebody's ears, Maybe not
- 13:13Speaker 2: butter in your ears. That was like a kind of
- 13:15Speaker 2: a weird thing to say, but you know what I'm saying.
- 13:17Speaker 1: I did put but you did. Oh my god, for
- 13:22Speaker 1: another time.
- 13:23Speaker 2: But Dan is just so amazing at bad translation, and
- 13:26Speaker 2: you know, he works with everybody like our label mate
- 13:28Speaker 2: Riley Green. He did the Band Perry's Pioneer album, so
- 13:32Speaker 2: he did our sophomore record, and we just would not
- 13:34Speaker 2: trust this music in any other hands. He's the best.
- 13:37Speaker 1: It's and it's funny because when you listen to this song,
- 13:41Speaker 1: it sounds like a band Perry song, but it doesn't
- 13:45Speaker 1: sound like And that's got to be the hardest thing
- 13:48Speaker 1: for an artist, like, hey, this is our sound, right,
- 13:50Speaker 1: but I but like, let's make sure it doesn't.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Sound like stuff, right. Yeah. It is that fine line
- 13:56Speaker 2: between nostalgia, like how do you make them feel what
- 13:59Speaker 2: we've all felt together before, but we are evolved, Like
- 14:02Speaker 2: we're in twenty twenty six. There's a lot going on
- 14:04Speaker 2: in country music that's so exciting as well, and it's like,
- 14:07Speaker 2: how do we just perfectly set this song in that season?
- 14:11Speaker 2: You know? So I'm glad you love it?
- 14:13Speaker 1: How many? How many? So? How many songs do you
- 14:16Speaker 1: have like completed? Right now?
- 14:17Speaker 2: We have three and we're headed back in in the
- 14:20Speaker 2: middle of March to grab three more.
- 14:22Speaker 1: So what so psychological? What made that? Out of these
- 14:25Speaker 1: ones you have done? What made this? How did it
- 14:28Speaker 1: raise its hand the highest for you guys and whoever
- 14:31Speaker 1: else was in the process.
- 14:33Speaker 2: I feel like the energy of it felt like the
- 14:36Speaker 2: right thing.
- 14:37Speaker 3: And you know the lyric, I think the playoff of like,
- 14:41Speaker 3: oh that's the banter, that's the wittingness of TVP and
- 14:45Speaker 3: then match with the payoff, and then the chorus is
- 14:47Speaker 3: just how Dan cut it produced.
- 14:49Speaker 2: It is just for all you music nerds. It's in
- 14:51Speaker 2: six eight, which is like a walk cut a six
- 14:54Speaker 2: eight song. It's a different kind of beat, so we've
- 14:55Speaker 2: never cut a six eight song. There are these crazy
- 14:58Speaker 2: chords on the courus am in it, which is it
- 15:01Speaker 2: just felt like all the right elements.
- 15:03Speaker 1: You know, I have a ten year old, so I'm
- 15:04Speaker 1: dying to say six seven.
- 15:05Speaker 2: But I'm not going to do no. I know, I
- 15:07Speaker 2: know our nieces and nephews educated us on that over
- 15:11Speaker 2: the holiday.
- 15:11Speaker 1: You know what, it's best not to go to the
- 15:14Speaker 1: age we're like, if I don't know, I'm not going to.
- 15:17Speaker 1: The last thing I want to ask is and it's
- 15:19Speaker 1: going to be a semi sentimental question. So I'm setting
- 15:22Speaker 1: you all up somebody who digs for tears. Now I'm
- 15:26Speaker 1: going to ask uh, Johnny. First, knowing the band Perry
- 15:31Speaker 1: existed before you and it's still obviously your lovely wife
- 15:36Speaker 1: is a large part of why its success is maintained,
- 15:39Speaker 1: what do you feel that you bring to the band
- 15:41Speaker 1: that makes it better? And then I'm going to ask
- 15:43Speaker 1: you the same question, what does he bring to the
- 15:45Speaker 1: band it didn't have before? But Johnny, go ahead.
- 15:48Speaker 3: I think it's just like we're currently in the Olympics.

- 16:37Speaker 2: I feel like you've picked up so many of those
- 16:39Speaker 2: responsibilities in one human and our partnership is just it
- 16:43Speaker 2: really is. Every's like, how is it going. I'm like,
- 16:45Speaker 2: it's it's pretty flawless. Like God has definitely designed us
- 16:50Speaker 2: to do this together.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Yeah.

- 17:00Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Well listen if the rest of the music you got
- 17:03Speaker 1: can be half of what Psychological is.
