- 0:39amazing animals, towering mountains, sparkling lakes, and
- 0:43friendly people. Buckle up, because we're about
- 0:46to explore Tanzania. Let's start by finding Tanzania
- 0:50on the map. Imagine Africa, the world's
- 0:53second largest continent, shaped a bit like a big animal's head,
- 0:57facing right. Now if you look at the eastern
- 0:59side, right where the Indian Ocean's blue waves touch the
- 1:02land, you'll find Tanzania. It's almost as if Tanzania is
- 1:07Africa's smile stretching wide along the coast.
- 1:10Tanzania is a big country, almost twice as large as the
- 1:14state of Texas. If you could walk from one end
- 1:17of Tanzania to the other, it would take you weeks and weeks.
- 1:20But what makes Tanzania really special isn't just its size,
- 1:24it's what you'll find inside. Let's take a peek at the flag of
- 1:27Tanzania. Imagine a rectangle divided by a
- 1:30diagonal stripe running from the bottom left to the top right.
- 1:34The top triangle is green, which stands for the Lands, Rich
- 1:37Forests and Farms. The bottom is blue for the
- 1:41sparkling lakes and ocean. The black stripe in the middle
- 1:44represents the people of Tanzania, and the narrow yellow
- 1:47stripes on each side remind every one of the country's
- 1:50wealth and sunshine. It's like a colorful story told
- 1:54with shapes. Now let's talk about the people
- 1:56who call Tanzania home. Over 60 million people live
- 2:00there, and they speak more than 120 different languages.
- 2:04That's a whole lot of ways to say hello, but the most common
- 2:07language is Swahili. If you ever visit Tanzania, you
- 2:11can greet someone by saying Jambo.
- 2:14That means hello in Swahili. Want to try it?
- 2:17Jambo Tanzania is known for being peaceful and friendly.
- 2:22People from lots of different backgrounds live together, share
- 2:25meals, and celebrate festivals. One of the most important
- 2:29celebrations is called Uhuru Day, which marks the country's
- 2:33independence. On this day, there are parades,
- 2:36dances and lots of singing. Imagine the giant birthday party
- 2:40but for a whole country. Speaking of celebrations, did
- 2:44you know that music and dance are a huge part of Tanzanian
- 2:47life? You might hear the sound of
- 2:49drums, guitars or even a marimba, which is kind of like a
- 2:53wooden xylophone. Kids and adults the like love to
- 2:56dance to traditional tunes and modern songs.
- 2:59Sometimes everyone gathers in a circle, clapping and singing
- 3:03together. It's like the world's happiest
- 3:06dance party. But let's not forget about the
- 3:08incredible nature you can find in Tanzania.
- 3:11If you love animals, you're in for a treat.
- 3:14Tanzania is famous for its national parks, protected wild
- 3:18places where animals roam free. One of the most famous is the
- 3:22Serengeti National Park. Imagine a giant grassy plain
- 3:26stretching as far as your eyes can see.
- 3:29This is where millions of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles
- 3:33travel every year in a huge migration.
- 3:36It's like a giant animal parade. And guess what?
- 3:40Tanzania is home to the big 5 animals, lions, elephants,
- 3:44leopards, buffaloes and rhinos. Safari guides call them the Big
- 3:495 because they're the most exciting to spot while on a
- 3:51safari. A safari is an adventure where
- 3:54you ride in a Jeep and look for animals in the wild, like a real
- 3:58life treasure hunt. Imagine seeing a group of
- 4:01elephants splashing in a river or a lion snoozing under a tree.
- 4:05That's Tanzania. But animals aren't the only
- 4:08wonders. Tanzania is also home to
- 4:11Africa's tallest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro.
- 4:14Picture a giant ice cream cone, but instead of ice cream, it's
- 4:19covered in snow. Even though it's near the hot
- 4:21equator. Mount Kilimanjaro stands over
- 4:2419,000 feet tall, which is almost 4 miles high.
- 4:28Some adventurers climb all the way to the top, where they can
- 4:32see clouds below them. It's like standing on the roof
- 4:35of Africa. Now let's splash into Tanzania's
- 4:38lakes. The country has some of the
- 4:40biggest lakes in the world. Lake Victoria is the largest
- 4:44lake in Africa and is so huge it touches 3 countries, Tanzania,
- 4:49Uganda and Kenya. Then there's Lake Tanganyika,
- 4:53which is the second deepest lake in the world.
- 4:55Some parts are so deep that you could stack more than 10 school
- 4:59buses on top of each other and still not reach the surface.
- 5:03Tanzania also has magical islands off its coast like
- 5:06Zanzibar. Zanzibar is sometimes called the
- 5:09Spice Island because it grows lots of spices like cloves,
- 5:13nutmeg, and cinnamon. Walking through a spice market
- 5:16in Zanzibar is like sniffing a giant box of crayons.
- 5:20So many colors and smells. People come from all over the
- 5:23world to relax on Zanzibar's white sandy beaches and swim in
- 5:28the clear blue sea. Let's not forget about the
- 5:30amazing food in Tanzania. Tanzanian meals are full of
- 5:34flavor and often shared with family and friends. 1 popular
- 5:38dish is called Ugly. It's a bit like play DoH, made
- 5:41from corn flour and you use your hands to roll it into a ball and
- 5:44scoop up tasty sauces and stews. There's also Naya Machoma, which
- 5:49means grilled meat and pillow, a spiced rice dish that smells
- 5:54delicious. And for dessert, you might enjoy
- 5:57fresh tropical fruits like mangoes, pineapples and bananas.
- 6:01Yum. Now you might be wondering, what
- 6:04do Tanzanian kids like to do for fun?
- 6:06Just like you, they love to play games, sing songs and go
- 6:09outside. Soccer or football as it's
- 6:12called, there is the most popular sport.
- 6:15You'll find kids kicking balls made of cloth or plastic bags
- 6:18tied together, playing matches in fields, streets or even sandy
- 6:22beaches. They also play games like Bao, a
- 6:25traditional board game using seeds or stones, kind of like
- 6:29playing marbles or checkers. Let's take a quick look at life
- 6:32in a Tanzanian village. Many people in Tanzania live in
- 6:36small villages surrounded by farms and fields.
- 6:39Houses are often made from mud bricks with thatched roofs to
- 6:42keep out the sun and rain. Chickens cluck around the yard
- 6:46and cows or goats might graze nearby.
- 6:49Families grow crops like maize, beans and sweet potatoes.
- 6:54Kids help out by fetching water, tending animals or helping in
- 6:57the garden. It's a busy but happy life full
- 7:00of teamwork. In the city, things are a bit
- 7:03different. Tanzania's biggest city is Dar
- 7:06es Salaam, which means House of Peace.
- 7:09It's a bustling place with tall buildings, busy markets, and
- 7:12lots of cars and bicycles zipping around.
- 7:15People go to school, work in offices, and shop for clothes
- 7:18and food. The city is right next to the
- 7:20ocean, so you can watch fishing boats come and go and maybe even
- 7:24spot a dolphin if you're lucky. Did you know that Tanzania is
- 7:27also famous for its ancient history?
- 7:30Long ago, some of the very first humans lived in Tanzania.
- 7:34In a place called Old Away Gorge, scientists found tools
- 7:37and bones that are over a million years old.
- 7:40It's like stepping into a real lifetime machine and discovering
- 7:44the secrets of the past. Tanzania is sometimes called the
- 7:47cradle of mankind because of these amazing discoveries.
- 7:51Let's talk about some animals you might not see anywhere else.
- 7:55The Zanzibar red colobus monkey lives only on Zanzibar Island.
- 8:00It has a fluffy white tail and a funny little face.
- 8:04There's also the Maasai giraffe, the tallest animal in the world,
- 8:08munching on treetops in Tanzania's parks.
- 8:11And if you're lucky, you might spot a Dick Dick, which is a
- 8:14tiny antelope about the size of a house cat.
- 8:17Now here's a fun did you know moment.
- 8:20Did you know that the world's largest volcanic crater is in
- 8:23Tanzania? It's called the Guranguro
- 8:25Crater, and it's like a giant bowl filled with grasslands,
- 8:29forests, lakes, and thousands of animals.
- 8:32Some people call it Africa's Garden of Eden because it's so
- 8:35beautiful and full of life. Another Did you know tanzanite,
- 8:39A sparkling blue gemstone, is found only in Tanzania?
- 8:44It's rarer than diamonds and shines in shades of blue and
- 8:47purple. People from all over the world
- 8:50love tanzanite jewelry, but the only place you can dig it up is
- 8:53near Mount Kilimanjaro. Let's not forget about
- 8:56Tanzania's amazing cultures. The Maasai people are famous for
- 9:00their bright red clothing, bead necklaces, and jumping dances.
- 9:04Maasai warriors can leap high into the air almost like they
- 9:08have springs in their shoes. There are also the Chaga people
- 9:11who live near Mount Kilimanjaro and grow coffee, and the Sukuma
- 9:14people who are known for their lively drum dances.
- 9:17Now let's do a quick recap of all the awesome things we
