- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Seeking Approval Podcast.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: I'm Dr.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Chris Smilster from the Iliad Methodist Church.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: You know, life loses faith.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: And faith is coming to be reflect.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: I want to take some time and slow down with you and have some honest conversations from the Word of God about daily life.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: So join me here today on Seeking Approval.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to Seeking Approval.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: We're still in our video series where we're looking at things that are being said from pulpits around the world, bringing uh our attention or our awareness to what is going on around us out there.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Now, whether this video is for uh the just the common uh lay member of a church who is uh maybe struggling with some things, maybe it's for uh workers in the church who want to make sure that we are sharing up our foundation and and building the walls to keep the world out.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's for a preacher, a pastor, a missionary, a young preacher out there uh that's just starting out.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Uh maybe it's for a seasoned pastor who uh maybe um has been uh so focused on their church uh but but you know are are hearing these things and and not really knowing what's you know happening out there.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: I want to help you uh to understand what's being said uh so that we can then be prepared.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Uh I I enjoy uh seeing what's out there because it helps me to be able to understand how to I guess fight back against it.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Uh if you know what's going on out there, you can be better prepared for it.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of people who are uh intimidated by some of the false doctrine because they don't know how to respond.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: So I'm trying to give folks a way to respond to some of these things.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: So I want to share this video with you uh just for a moment.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Again, we're not looking at the style, the person, or any of those things.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: We're just looking at the content of what is being said.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: So let me play this video with you, and then we'll come right back and we'll discuss a few things about it.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: This week we are going to admit that we love you, Bible, just not like that.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: What we call the Bible is a complicated and fascinating collection of different types of literature to impact the stories and imagery, some of which we might never be able to fully make a complete sense of.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: Verse after verse, right there next to each other.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Deuteronomy 231, we learned that units were restricted from the temple.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: There's simply no way to reconcile all of these differences.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: These tales weren't intended to be factual accounts of their world.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: In fact, many of them are quite the opposite.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: I like to think of them as the stories that I grew up on Aesop's fable.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Now, in this video, the this uh this person makes a rather remarkable statement uh when it's claimed that the Bible is full of contradictions and that many of the accounts uh that we read in Scripture were never intended to be factual, and went on to compare the Bible to Aesop's fables.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Now, there are so many things wrong with this video uh that you know most of the time, you know, you can find a few things like, you know, yeah, we we can agree on that.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Um there's there's very little in this video that that I may agree with.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And I watched the entire video, I think it was about 10 minutes long.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Uh I gave you just a portion of it.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: But I want you to uh think about what what is being said, what is under attack in this video.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: And this is happening in a church.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: It was in Birmingham, Alabama.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: So this is not in a uh a highly liberal area.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: This is in a very conservative state like Alabama.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Uh and I want you to think about that the book that that has been preached from and and read from, or the letters that have been read from for for centuries.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Uh the Old Testament, that those scrolls were read for centuries.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: The New Testament, uh, the gospels and the letters and the epistles that were written have been read since you know the first century when Paul was writing his and they they immediately became uh available to those churches and then copied and passed, and and he even gave them uh very specific instructions to write this down and send it to the Laodiceans and vice versa, and you get their letter, and it began being shared.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: So for centuries, what we have built our lives upon uh is now someone is standing in a pulpit in a church and telling people that it is not accurate and full of mistakes and contradictions, and that we become the arbiter of truth.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: That is a very dangerous platform to stand on.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: And in this one, there's two examples given.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: One dealing with Proverbs 26, we're going to look at that, and the other is dealing with the eunuchs from the Old Testament all the way over to Acts chapter number eight.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Both of these are very easily explained, and it's very, I guess I'll say, frustrating when people are, what I will say, and I don't mean I, well, if it comes off harsh, that's fine, but there are people out there who are educated far beyond their intelligence level.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: And this is an example of somebody who has education but doesn't have the intelligence.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: There's no wisdom there.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: I've said it this way before.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Almost anybody, you give somebody the right tools, almost anybody can take an engine apart on a car.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, assuming there's no rusted bolts and you have to have some, you know, uh understanding of that.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: But if it's just you know taking bolts apart, you know, most everybody can take that thing apart.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: But it takes somebody with intelligence and wisdom of that to put it back together and make it run.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: And that and that's where this is coming in.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Almost anybody can open the Bible and read it.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Not everybody needs to teach it.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Matter of fact, we're told that in the New Testament that from James that not many of you need to be teachers.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: You need to you need to run from that.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: And so this is the kind of the situation that we're getting into.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: That this person does not need to be standing in a pulpit preaching or teaching because they have no idea what they're talking about, and they're only bringing harm uh to the people, and they're bringing condemnation upon themselves because we stand a greater condemnation whenever we become preachers.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: So, according to what James said, this person does not need to be teaching anymore.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Let me start off with the Proverbs 26.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: She alluded to it, she didn't read it, but I'm gonna read it to you.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: The verses that she's talking about is Proverbs 26, verses 4 and 5.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Verse 4 says, Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Sounds very easy to understand.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: However, the very next verse in verse 5 says, answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: So right there, back-to-back verses.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: If you're not careful, you read that and it says, answer not a fool according to his folly.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: And the very next verse says, answer a fool according to his folly.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: And if you don't have some wisdom in understanding Scripture and being able to look and see what this is saying, and you just took it at face value, and you take everything as literal writing, when you read that, you would say, Well, this is a contradiction.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: It says answer not, then it says to answer.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: So which one am I supposed to do?
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: So I can understand how somebody might read that and and initially think that, boy, this is a contradiction to one another.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: But it is it this the simplicity in it is understanding when you need to answer a fool and when you don't need to answer a fool.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: For example, sometimes the wisest thing you can do is just keep your mouth shut.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: There are people out there who want to argue, they want to fuss, they want to fight.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: And I have found no, in the spiritual world, I have found none greater who want to fuss and fight and argue than many, not all, I won't say all.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: There are some folks out there that uh, you know, that I I will say that I have respect for them, but I don't agree with what they believe.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: But Calvinists, they seem like they want to argue, they want to slander so bad.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: This the moment you disagree with a Calvinist, they come right back.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Well, you're you're a fool, you don't understand.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Uh, you have, I mean, you have no understanding of the scripture.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Uh, and they just they just want to argue with it.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: And I don't, I don't want to argue with this, the person that's this speaking at all.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Uh matter of fact, I I I pray that she comes to know and understand the Bible because what she's saying, I I would have to doubt that she knows Jesus Christ as her Savior because she is she is desecrating and speaking down about the very book, the holy scripture that proclaims his name and that he uh is the the the author and finisher of.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: But sometimes the wisest thing you can do is is to is to not say anything.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: I heard it said one time that a closed mouth gathereth no feet.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: A closed mouth gathereth no feet.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Uh don't don't don't open your mouth sometimes.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: You won't stick your foot in your mouth, you won't get involved in these silly uh arguments that have no merit, that have no basis, and sometimes we don't need to bring attention to things that don't need to have attention brought to it.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: And I don't I don't bring up everything, I mean there there are thousands and thousands of videos that we can bring up.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: Some of them I don't bring up because there's no there's no merit to it.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: There's no there's no reason discussing it.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: It's just it's a fool's error to even get involved in it.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: But then on the other side, there are times when foolishness needs to be corrected and answered.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: And like in this case, what this person is teaching out of the pulpit is foolishness.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: And there are there are there are videos that I'll push to the side, but then there are times when I find something like this, and it's got a broader spectrum of people that can be harmed by looking at it or seeing it.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: And and this needs to be answered.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: So there are times, according to Proverbs, there's times when we need to keep our mouth shut, and there's times when uh we need to answer what they're saying or speak back to it because it may be leading others astray or uh just simply saying some things that are very harmful to God and to his word.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: So those two verses, it's not a contradiction.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: It's calling us to understand that we must be as cunning as the serpent and as harmless as the dove.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: That's in the New Testament.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: We've got to understand and have wisdom on when we need to attack and when we need to let things go.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Understand when you need Paul was very good at that.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: The Bible will tell us that that debating scripture is almost useless.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: But then you go and look at Paul and he would stand and he would he would debate and reason with people over scripture.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: So which are we supposed to do, debate or not debate?
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: That's where these two verses in Psalm uh and uh Proverbs come in.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: You've got to know when it's the right time to debate.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: You gotta know when it's the right time to discuss the scripture, and you know when it's got to know when it's the right time to walk away.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: And and that's what the proverb is talking about.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: There's no contradiction there.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: It's talking about being a wise person.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Don't be foolish, don't react to everything you hear.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: Don't do everything in in strife and just for the vainglory of it, so you can sound smarter than the other person.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: But in this one, the reason why I wanted to look at this video and and and bring out this one is because this person is defaming and desecrating God's word, and his word is holy and pure.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: And so this one causes me to want to stand up and say, no, wait a minute.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: You're talking about something that people have given their life for.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: And that to me is worth standing up for.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: Now let's go over to the Ethiopian eunuch.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: We spent about eight minutes there on that.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Let me get over the Ethiopian eunuch.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: This one again is very simple.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Uh, and if we if again, if you just take it on face value, you look back over in Deuteronomy 23, uh, one, which says, He that is wounded in the stones or hath his privy member cut off shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: I don't need to explain that verse and what it means, uh, but we know what a eunuch is.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: And you know, there's we could discuss why people were eunuchs and different things.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: Uh this is more what the verse is is talking about.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: And under the law given to Israel, there were certain restrictions uh concerning the participation in the congregation, the covenant congregation of the Lord.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: And when this person points to this Old Testament passage and then goes and runs straight over to Acts chapter number eight and deals with the Ethiopian eunuch, they're missing.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: She is missing so much in between.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: And then not only that, so much context of what Deuteronomy is.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: Deuteronomy is is addressing the covenant assembly under Mosaic law.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: And then Acts chapter 8 is dealing with the grace of God, which has come now through the shed blood of Jesus Christ and the spreading of the gospel and the open call to all who will receive.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Those are two different things.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Jeremiah wrote about it under the new covenant.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: This new covenant will not just be for this people, this new covenant will be for everybody.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: So when we do that, when we try to take two things and put them together just because maybe they have the same word of eunuch in it, and we don't get the context, we don't get the reference verses around it, we get we walk in dangerous ground, you create the contradiction where you want it to be.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: So you're reading into the scripture, isegesis, exegesis.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: So you're reading into the scripture.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: So I encourage you to go to Isaiah chapter number 56, after the great Isaiah chapter number 53 of Jesus giving his life for all mankind.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: And in Isaiah 56, it says, Neither let the son of the stranger that hath joined himself to the Lord speak, saying, The Lord hath utterly separated me from his people, neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: So by Isaiah, when the prophecy starts being really becomes really heated about Christ and his coming, and just came out of the prophetic, one of the greatest prophetic chapters ever written in Isaiah 53, and you c right after that, now the Lord is saying that no one is separated.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Don't let a man say that he's separated.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: Don't let the eunuch say that he's separated anymore.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: When this comes to pass, when Christ comes and gives his life on the cross, stricken for my sins and my iniquity and your sins and your iniquity, when that happens, all men can come.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: Men and women.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: Men, tiss in the Bible, all men, that means all of mankind.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: Okay, it's a masculine form, so they use man, but it means all of mankind.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: And that's what that's what exactly what Isaiah 56 and 3 says.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: So then we go over into Acts chapter number 8, and you see this Ethiopian eunuchs in their reading, and what is he reading?
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Isaiah 53.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: You think that he might have glanced over at Isaiah 56 as well, talking about the eunuchs, and here he's read the about the eunuchs saying, you know, don't say I'm separated.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: And so he's trying to figure out why am I not separated?
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: Why can I say?
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: This brings, this actually explains Acts chapter number 8 a whole lot better.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: And in Acts 8, 35 it says, Then Philip opened his mouth and began at the same scripture and preached unto him Jesus.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: He preached Jesus Christ.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: He wasn't preaching the old covenant, he's preaching the new covenant.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: And when the Ethiopian eunuch heard the gospel and heard that Acts or that Isaiah 53 was or 56 was now true, that he was not separated.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: He was no longer a dried tree, that he could accept the blood of Jesus Christ and the sacrifice that was made for him, then he desired salvation and baptism.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: And in 37, and Philip said, If thou but Philip said, if thou believest with all thy heart, thou mayest that's salvation.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: And the eunuch says, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: Then Philip baptized him.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Because there's a lot of people who say that it was the baptism that saved the eunuch.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: It was not.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: So the law of Moses had placed restriction, but the grace of God, Isaiah spoke about the grace, there's grace coming, there's grace on the horizon.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: This great mystery of the Old Testament that was that was, you could see parts and pieces of Jesus Christ, and you could see parts and pieces of the church and the grace of God that was coming.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: And then finally, by the New Testament, this grace is being unveiled, and now it's fully exposed to everyone.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: And then even by uh even by the book of Acts, the Holy Spirit has been breathed out, and now the Spirit has free movement among the people.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: There's no contradiction between these two.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: It's a picture of the grace of God, the unfolding plan of his uh inexhaustible reach to all mankind everywhere.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: So what the law had restricted, grace had opened.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: So in our Bible, we we have when when this lady begins talking about that it's a it's a book of fables, oh my heavens.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: We have a book that is rife.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, it it is freighted with uh different types of literature, similes and and uh hyperbole and illustrations, uh uh poetry, law, history, wisdom writing, uh, historical writing, prophetic writing, there's so much writing, some writing that needs to be taken literal, some writing that needs to be taken uh spiritual, some writing that needs to be written for you, some writing that that's written to you.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: There's so many different things, and that's why I say that some people are educated, but they don't have the wisdom to see what they're reading.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: And if one thing that one thing that she said in here that I would agree with, maybe one, is that the Bible does contain those different types of literature, and that is true, it does, but not in a way she said it.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, when when David said the Lord is my shepherd, that doesn't mean that we're sheep with four legs and a hairy back.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: That that's not what it meant.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: Well, we may have a hairy back, but you know what I mean.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: We don't have four legs and wool growing off of us, let's say it that way.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: There's there's there's so there's so many different forms and styles of writing.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: It's the greatest compilation of writing ever uh uh compiled by man.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: Consider what Luke's opening statement is.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: And now, this is Dr.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: Luke.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: This is not a man uh that was prone to uh exaggeration, prone to uh excitement or um uh you know uh I guess emotional thinking.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: This is a man who was very uh very literal, very straightforward.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: Now he wrote with parables and things like that because that's what was going on at the time.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: But he's a man that's very literal.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: And in uh chapter 1, verse 3 and 4, roughly, he tells us that he is writing an orderly account so that uh Theilophilus might know the certainty of the things that he had been taught.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: Then he refers to eyewitnesses.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Luke, he sets this record straight right off the beginning.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: He's like, this is this is not fable.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: This is not fictitious writing.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: I'm writing you this so you can understand the things that I have been taught, the things that I have seen.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: John says it over in his uh the the first of the first epistle of John, whenever he says these things that we have heard, which we have seen, which we have touched, which we have handled, which I mean we've heard it with our own ears, we've seen it with our own eyes, these things we tell unto you.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: These are not fake.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: So how can someone say that the Bible is is is is fables?
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: It wasn't meant to be taken as literal factual accounts.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: No, that that goes against everything that Luke wrote and John wrote to start off their their gospel and their epistle.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: That doesn't sound like people who were were concerned about if the events happened or not.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: No, they were very concerned about it.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: And then you go over to 2 Peter.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: 2 Peter uh uh 116 says, For we have not followed cunning, uh cunningly devised fables.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: We have made known unto you the power and the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, but were uh eyewitnesses, uh eyewitnesses of his majesty.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: Peter, I mean, when she can stand up there and say that this book is nothing more than a book of Aesop's fables, when you're holding the very words in that book that Peter says, This is not fables.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's dangerous writing, that's dangerous preaching.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: And I and I I pray for this young lady.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: You you can tell she's uh you know passionate about what she's saying, but she's so wrong, and she will stand judgment for that.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: We have not devised uh cunning fables, we have not followed cunningly devised fables.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: We made known unto you the power and the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, but we're eyewitnesses of these things.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: That's pretty strong.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: That's pretty strong writing.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: So the problem may not be the Bible.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: The problem are the people who are reading it.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: When you can look at the Bible and and and and call out that it's false or fake or fables, then you have completely missed what 2 Peter said.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: You've completely missed what 2 Timothy 2.15 study to show thyself approved of God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: And then John 17, 17, sanctify them through thy truth.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: Okay, what is the truth?
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: He finishes it by saying, Thy word is truth.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: So before we begin to you know to start throwing our our Bible off to the side and saying, wait a minute, this thing is just full of inaccuracies, we probably need to do some work on ourselves first.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: Because there are a lot of false teaching and false preaching out there that are leading people astray.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: So just because you found a question in the Bible doesn't mean you found a contradiction.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: It means that you found something that you need to read, to understand, to find the context and the connection to all of it.
