- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Hey guys, welcome back to another episode of Creature Anarchy.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: This is your host Ekta and I'm really excited about the brand that we're introducing you guys to today because I think there's a lot of stuff out here and we're always trying to, as consumers, you know, sift through it.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: And it's very difficult to find good products that are, you know, they're good enough to where they're gentle for your skin, but they're not causing harsh reactions.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: And that's something I'm always looking for.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: And also not only that, but the versatility of those products, right?
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: Because we have so many needs.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, the skin is such a large organ that we need products that can be used all over the body, yeah, you know, anywhere you need, and also easy to use.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: So without further ado, I want to introduce you guys the co-founder and VP of Sales and Marketing of Brixy, Jennifer Broadwick.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the show, Jen.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: I'm so excited to host you.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Yes, thank you for having me, Ecta.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: I've been really looking forward to the conversation and got a chance to listen to some of your previous podcasts.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: And it's so interesting to hear from other, you know, founders and beauty brand experts that you interview.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: So I'm excited to be part of that story.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm excited to learn from you today.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: And thank you for your kind words.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: I love hosting amazing brand founders and people who can come with a new perspective to the skincare industry.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: I feel like we see a lot of the same stuff.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: And for me, Brixy, I mean, it's really a breath of fresh air because the products are not really like the products I'm usually used to seeing.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: With that said, I would love to learn more about you and the brand.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: You know, what really led to the creation of the brand and the story, if you could walk us down memory lane.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know I love to.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: We have such a unique story because it really began about 20 years ago.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: So my partner and my husband Kevin, he is the official founder of Brixy.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: I'm a co-founder along with our business partner, Trey, who's our CEO.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Kevin actually started a company back in, I want to say 2006, and the whole heritage and the reason he started it, it was pre-clean beauty movement, pre-clean products movement.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: And he was working in a lab funded by the National Institutes of Health.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: They were testing the effects of potential endocrine disrupting chemicals such as BPA and phthalates.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: And they were going through this testing, they got the science that said, okay, these chemicals are endocrine disruptors, a class of chemical that you know is damaging in our bodies.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: And he took it to a bunch of baby companies because obviously the most impacted group are kids and children that are developing, and we really want to make sure they're as safe as possible with products we're putting on or in their bodies.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And so he took the science to these big companies and said, Hey, can you change your plastic packaging?
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Could you change this ingredient that's really toxic in your formulas?
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Um, and nobody wanted to do it.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: And so he said, you know what?
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna start my own company.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be a safe products company.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: And he did.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: It was called Think Baby and Think Sport.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Um, the baby line is obviously the baby side, and then the sports side had like body care products, sunscreen is what they became most well known for.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: And he had that company for about 15 years along the way, you know, really evangelized and helped lead that clean products movement, ultimately becoming, you know, the subject matter expert on safe ingredients in mineral sun care to like the buyers at Target, for example.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: And so after he uh that company was acquired, he was already sort of formulating what to do next.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: And I think really he just says after 15 years of walking down aisles and seeing walls and walls of plastic for all these different personal care items everyone uses every day and starting to understand the impact of that environmentally speaking.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: He grabbed myself and he grabbed Trey, who was with him at Think, and said, Hey, you guys, I have a really fun, exciting thing I want to start and I want to call it Brixy.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: We're gonna make all of these incredible personal care items in solid format.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: So we don't have to use any plastic packaging.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: But of course, we continued with you know the heritage of safe ingredients and, you know, making sure that we're not using endocrine disruptors and we're basing our ingredient choices on the best available science.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of how Brixy got started.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: We really like had this evolution of better for you and this whole clean products movement with his previous company that has now evolved into his next venture, Brixie, which is obviously continuing that heritage, but really layering in our love for the planet and of course making sure everything that we make at Brixy is zero plastic anywhere in our lineup.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of how we got started.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: I got pulled in from tech sales, if you can believe it.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: I feel like there's a lot of beauty brand founders out there that came from the tech world and had a dream of starting their own brands.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Um, but he pulled me in and I've just had so much fun these last two years and a couple months, like building the products and using them myself.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: So it's been really fun.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: It's really cool that you guys do come from the tech world because I feel like the efficacy of products is not just about ingredients and, you know, like how well they're working.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: It's also about the functionality of those products.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: And, you know, it shows in the functionality of Brixie, like the way that you guys do bars, you know, for everything.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: I really like it.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: I think it's it's so much more convenient if you think about it at the end of the day, because there's so many professionals out here that we're always moving around, you know.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: And for me in medicine, I can tell you, I don't have time to carry bottles of anything with me, you know, even if I'm going to like a conference or wherever I'm going.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: So these kind of items to me really hold a special place in my heart because there's a lot of, you know, innovation out there that can allow us to create, you know, wellness products, beauty products that are obviously efficacious, but really effective in the way that we use them and the way that we utilize them to form habits and, you know, kind of lean on them, right?
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: As our tried and trues.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: Like there's a lot to be said there.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: So um I love where you guys started.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: I love that it started from a place of truly, you know, wanting to find a solution.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: That's really cool.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we really wanted to take a category that has sort of evolved into the like, like you said before, there's so many choices, so many options, and consumers are trying to sift through and find the best things to match their needs.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: And some things work and you have to try a bunch of stuff.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: But we wanted to take a really simple approach, use simple, effective ingredients, simplify the routine.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: And that's kind of what we did with all of our products.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: This next generation of Brickseat products, our facial care and our shampoos and our body wash bars are about to be launched with this formula as well.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: But all of our approach to skincare begins and in hair care in general, really begins with the skin barrier and the moisture barrier in mind.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Because that's really something that everyone, regardless of age or ethnicity or skin type or hair type can benefit from, is having a base formula that really cares for the skin barrier and the moisture barrier of your hair.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: So yeah, simplicity is what we you know, the name of the game is for us.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: We don't want to have a 10-step routine, we want to have a three-step routine and make it, you know, easy for people with their busy lives these days, still giving them really effective ingredients in a format that's super easy to use on the go or at home, their preference.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: So absolutely.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: No, I love that because I really like your shampoo bar, by the way.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: It's really nice.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Um, the citrus one is really, you know, a heavy hitter for me because if you are anybody who works, even if you're going out a lot and there's a lot of pollution out there, I mean, you know that it gets trapped in your hair, you know, the smells, the the all of that.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: And I think with this specific product, I've really enjoyed it because it really helps me obviously cleanse my scalp and you know maintain healthy, you know, scalp health.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: But it's great for getting all of that residue and that smell out of your hair.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: Like it sounds crazy, but seriously, like it works really well for that.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: And it doesn't strip your actual strands.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: Like one of my biggest problems with a lot of like, for example, clarifying shampoos.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: I used to use a lot of those because my one of the biggest complaints was if I'm going out all day, I'm working all day, my hair absorbs a lot of the stuff that I'm around.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: So to rinse that out and to not have that lingering on you, it takes a lot.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: It was always a struggle for me.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: So I'd always lean on things like clarifying shampoos.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: Most of them are gonna leave your scalp like really stripped.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: You know, you're gonna have dandruff when you never had dandruff in your life, you know?
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: So, like it's it's a problem.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: And so what I noticed is this specific product for me, it works just as well as a clarifying shampoo would.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: It, you know, it gets rid of the oiliness because I have oily hair.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's really great for just washing the day off, you know, and you don't feel like you have to replace it every like two days because the product, I mean, it's surprised me, is what I'm trying to say.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: You know, when I started using it, it surprised me how long it lasts and how well it works.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: And I was immediately intrigued.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: Like, what did they do?
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: Because I'm, you know, I haven't used a bar product in a long time that works so well.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: So it's it's very fascinating.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: No, I'm so glad you had a good experience with it.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: To your point on the pollution that you might encounter in the city each day, like we don't really necessarily think about, you know, UV and environmental factors like pollution, or if I live in the mountains of Utah in Park City, and so it's really dry, um, really cold in the winter, but always really dry climate.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: And that absolutely affects, you know, my hair health in general, just with you know, the moisture that my hair can maintain.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: So I totally hear you.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: And it is amazing.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Got a gentle enough cleanser for your scalp, but it's effective enough to like really clean the strands without overdrying them, makes a difference.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: We really are excited about our approach to combating environmental stress with our Brixie blend.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: And I don't know if you've uh taken a deep dive on that yet, but we have a blend of ceramide and niacinamide in all of the base of our products that really help with the moisture barrier so that nothing is ever overdried.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: In fact, it's actually enhancing the ability for your hair and your skin to retain that moisture it's got and take on more moisture.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: But the balancing formula that you're talking about with the citrus scent, you know, really effectively cleans.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: So I use the strengthening shampoo bar regularly, but I'll use that citrus bar umce every two weeks, in fact, because I live in a place that has really hard water.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: So while I don't have pollution, I'm dealing with that hard water is like I'm going to war with it.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: It's a killer for your hair and your skin.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: Like hard water is like, oh my gosh.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, that's it's always been a problem for me too.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: I think it's interesting because you guys have coconut oil and I really love coconut oil.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: Like, I I honestly on this podcast, I might have raved about it a few times, but like for anyone listening, you guys, my biggest secret my whole life for good hair has been coconut oil.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: Like genuinely.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: Like I've been using it for scalp massages my whole life.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: You know, my mother used it, it's in my family, it's in my culture, and it's just it's one of those ingredients that I feel like no one wants to focus on anymore, like in terms of the really strong benefits that you can't deny, you know, that kind of thing.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: So I love that you have that.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: It's that right at the very top for me as a consumer.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: If I see a product that really celebrates this ingredient, I am more inclined to purchase that because I know it works.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: And I want to ask you this actually, because when you were picking your ingredients, like what did you guys have in mind?
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: Because I really believe when it comes to especially hair care, there are genuinely tried and true ingredients that work.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: So our approach was kind of, you know, hailing back to our methods of just keep it simple and use ingredients that are shown to work with science and that people really are familiar with because they do work and other brands are using them.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: When we were coming up with the concept of Brixy and starting to formulate and product test, you know, we knew we wanted to make our products familiar enough with the ingredients that people are already choosing and maybe their water-based products because the format was new, right?
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: We were already asking them to change a behavior.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: And instead of squeezing a liquid into their hands and putting that on their hair, we wanted them to take a solid bar of shampoo and rub it in their hands and then take that to their hair.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: So it's a little bit of a behavior change.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: And so we didn't want to venture too far off and be completely out on the left field of these ingredients we were using.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: So we said, you know, let's keep it simple with our ingredients.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: Let's use what we know works, that the customer knows works, and there's already science behind it.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: And so that's kind of where we landed on with our, you know, generation one formulas, if you will.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: And then with our gen two formulas that we've launched all of this year, so all our facial care and the two new shampoo bars, like we've layered in a real strong approach to having skincare benefits in your hair care too.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: So we wanted to, you know, start with that familiarity for the customer as we educated on how to use our products.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: And the more feedback we've gotten, you know, people are saying the same things that you're, you know, sharing today, Ecta, is like, it works so well, it really surprised me.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: I didn't know what to expect.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Or I thought it was going to be super drying because it's a bar that I'm looking at, but it's actually not drying my hair out.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: So it's been really cool to get that feedback.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: But yeah, we basically wanted to select our ingredients based on efficacy, familiarity, and make sure that the customer kind of felt really comfortable with what they were getting because they were trying something new, probably.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: That's really cool.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: I think you know, forming a habit is half the struggle with consumers.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Like I think that a lot of us struggle with, you know, certain things, whether it's scalp health or, you know, skin health or whatever it is for anyone listening out there, whatever it is for you, but like the hardest part is getting into that habit of like utilizing a single product or the same brand continuously till you see a result.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: And I've often seen this with you know, a lot of the people that chime in that tell us their journey, you know, even with myself, I think it's a big kind of commitment, you know, you really have to stick to something to see it work.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: So when I see products that are not really, you know, worried about shifting ingredients to the point of like just like absurdity, you know, for lack of a better term.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: Like I, you know, sometimes I that's honestly that's what it is.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: Absurd sometimes the ingredients I see.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: And I and I think if we just don't do that, right, and we stick to the tried and true and we stick to what works, I think consumers start to realize, you know, that this is this is where I need to be and this is what I need to make sure that I'm doing what's best for my my health at the end of the day.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: If you look at pharma, we're not using these crazy, you know, like, yeah, there's great drugs out there that are you know very innovative, but what are your tried and true drugs?
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: They're the ones that have been around for a very long time.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: That's why I had brought up the coconut oil when we were talking, you know, earlier, because when I see something that I know works, I'm going to buy that product.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Like that's the bottom line.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've I've always kind of jokingly said you're never gonna find an ingredient in Brixy that's like from the mountains of Nepal or like the highest glacier in the Arctic.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: Like it's that's not like we're not going for something like that.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Like it's it is about the tried and true and the you know products that we know to work and we, you know, that have proven to work time and time again for so many different hair types or skin types.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: So yeah, we have the same same approach that you're talking about there.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: It also just makes it easy, you know, like people want it to be an easy decision to recognize and feel comfortable with something if they're gonna try a new product.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: And so it's nice to know there are those tried and true ingredients that you can rely on.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: I think that makes it a lot easier for somebody to try something new if they're looking to move away from what they're currently using and find something better or different.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: No, absolutely.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: I agree, I agree.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: And I and I want to actually ask you about sustainability because I think that's a big piece of you know, why I also love the brand, because it's kind of obvious how sustainable it is.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: You know, it's just it's literally the most obvious aspect, I think, about the brand.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: And I'd love to learn about that, you know, when you guys were really approaching this topic of sustainability where there's a lot of confusion for the everyday person, like myself, you know, I know sustainable is great, you know, like I want to be that consumer that recycles everything and I want to always pick the best thing.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: But then I also wonder, like on the brand side, what really goes into that?
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: So for you guys, what was the thought process of the sustainability aspect?
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, how have you maintained that as a brand?
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so for us, the big mission behind BRICSE is to reduce the amount of plastic and personal care and beauty items.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: Um, and so I don't know how many years, I think it was like two years ago, the statistic came out that 120 billion units of plastic are produced globally, virgin plastic is produced globally.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: So per year, right?
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: And the US alone in 2018, we use 7.9 billion units of rigid plastic.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: And so we're creating tons and tons of new virgin plastic, and we can't recycle our way out of that mass production.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: Um, and the the real driving force behind it because plastic makes things convenient, right?
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: It's portable, it's a durable material, it can house a liquid formula.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: Um, but at the end of the day, it's causing major health issues as well as environmental issues from the waste that it's incurring.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: There's so many ways to look at it.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: There's a ton of water that goes into the creation of plastic.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: So we're using a vital resource to create it.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: The recycling system is broken.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: So the majority of plastic, like 96% or something, is actually just ending up in landfills or the environment polluting the world.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: And on top of that, we've had a couple of studies in the last year come out that have shown, you know, microplastics are found in human bodies.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: I think the most recent one was a study of a couple hundred men, and all every single person in that study was found to have microplastics in their sperm.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: So it's absolutely a health issue as much as an environmental issue.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: And with Brixy, like we want to meet people where they are because you're right, there's so much confusion around what can be recycled, will it get recycled, like the types of plastic you can actually, you know, put in your bin.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: And there's a lot of mixed materials too that we use in our beauty routines from like mascara tubes to pumps for, you know, shampoo or lotion bottles that just simply cannot be recycled because of the mixed materials.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: There's nobody separating them.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: So even if you know you were to do it, most likely would not get recycled.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: But there's no money also in getting those plastics ready for recycling.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: So companies aren't doing it, sadly.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: Sort of this like vicious cycle that we've created for ourselves by using plastics that Brixie is really trying to solve for.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Someone asked me the other day, like, what's the most important thing at Brixy?
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: Is it the sustainability mission or is it making products that work?
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: And I said, 100%, we're making products that work first.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Because if you don't make amazing products, no one's going to use them.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: When we meet that need and we know we've got a product that is really great, if not better than what's on the market and we're really proud of it, and we formulate it without plastic, like that's the added bonus.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: But we always start with the customer in mind and we make sure that you know the ingredients are familiar, they work incredibly well for the intended use, whether that's you know, certain hair types or skin types.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: And then we get to say, hey, guess what?
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: By choosing this product that works really well and you love to use and is travel friendly and all these good things, it's also doing better for the planet.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: So that's sort of like the way that we think about sustainability.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: It is what motivated us to formulate in a bar, but we also make sure that at Brixie, like we know our customers come first.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: If we're not making products that aren't better, like people aren't gonna use them.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: And so that's kind of our primary focus.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: And secondly, would be like our mission to reduce plastic waste.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: I really love that.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: I love that you guys have expanded, by the way.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Like I really love that you've expanded into body and facial care and you're really bringing this concept to all fronts because I really meant what I said, where it's very difficult to find full body options, especially from one brand.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: That's the big one, you know.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: Like when you can have one brand that you know like their products work for you, and then you can come back to them again and again for like different needs, like whether it's like hair care, body care, facial care, whatever that is for you, like you can keep coming back.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: That really speaks volumes, you know.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: And I think a lot of consumers, we do look for that because there is value in tried and true, you know.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: So I want to ask, you know, how was that transition for you guys?
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: You know, moving from hair care into the body realm, into the skincare realm.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: Like, how has that journey been for the brand?
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: It's been super fun, to be honest.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Luckily, we have Kevin's experience formulating products from his previous days at Think Baby and Think Sport and having a really good understanding of ingredient selection and all of his connections with chemists and the world of, you know, actually coming up with these formulas.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: We really had fun with it.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: It wasn't like scary or daunting, but what we wanted to do is just make sure we were testing along the way and making sure that the products before launch were actually going to work incredibly well for the intended use of the formula.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: So it was really fun.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: I got to do all the product testing, as well as uh, you know, everyone on the team and our friends and family, and then the folks that we sent our products out to.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: The shift was to facial care this year and then expanding our shampoos.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: It just seemed natural, to be honest.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: We kind of always knew that when we started Brixie and we had primarily hair care with some body wash bars as a complement.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: We knew we'd be going into other categories, but we wanted to stay in the bathroom, right?
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: So if you look at your bathroom and you see all those plastic bottles in various parts on your sink, in your shower, on your tub, we wanted to tackle all of those products.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: And so we kind of knew like the long-term vision for Brixie was going to be hair care, skincare, you know, possibly lotions one day.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: Uh, we're gonna be launching deodorants in Q1 of next year, which I'm also very excited about.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: That's like the best part of the process is like getting to like formulate the packaging and formulation of the actual product and the testing of it.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: So really excited to be launching into deodorants next year, too.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: So we've got a lot of newness coming.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: I also think that's just important for any personal care brand is to continually deliver something fun and new for your current customers that are already loving your products, but also ways that other new customers could kind of trip over your brand if they are not currently, you know.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Aware of you already.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: So, for example, when we were formulating our facial care bars, we knew shampoo bars for some folks is still a very new concept that they're getting comfortable with.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: We have so many great customers that love our products out for hair care, but facial care is not that big of a departure to use a bar versus pump something out into your hand that's already a liquid.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: And so we knew that coming out with like really great facial care products that, you know, were safe for all ages, safe for sensitive skin with some really great dedicated functionality for different skin types.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: We knew that would attract new customers to the brand because maybe they are not ready for shampoo bars yet.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: You know, everyone's at a different spot, but perhaps they'll love our facial care bar so much that they'll try our shampoo bar next and then the body bar, you know.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: So it helps introduce new customers to a brand like ours where we have some products that are requiring a behavior change and to try something new.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of how we got here where we are today, where we started with shampoo, we layered in body, facial care was next, and we're now expanding our shampoo and soon to come as deodorant.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: So um I think the more categories that we get into as we grow our brand, because we're only two years and like two months old.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: I still feel like a baby brand, even though we've been doing this for, I mean, working on it for longer than that time.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: But um, yeah, it's been really fun and it's been a natural progression into these other categories for those reasons.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: That's really cool.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: And I like that you guys are coming out with deodorants.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: I'm excited for that one.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: I'm always looking for new and better deodorants.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: I feel like that's such a white space still in our industry.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Like we don't have nearly enough, you know, good options.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: So I think that's gonna be awesome to Yeah.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: Another thing that we like to do at Brixy is before we launch a new product, like we do a lot of competitive research.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: So, like this beginning half of the year, we spent months scouring the internet and other competing brands or products to see like what are the biggest complaints?
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: What are the biggest problems that consumers are seeing today with what's currently on the market?
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: And then we go tackle those problems and make sure that you know our products don't result in the same thing for those consumers.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of another part of our process is to make sure, like, you know, there are some really great products out there, but you know, everyone's got to find something that works for them.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: And we like to make sure we have a really good understanding of things that are not going great so that we can release something that really solves all those problems for folks.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: So it's been really an educational experience.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: Um, every time we've gone through this process of learning, development, and releasing a new product, it's really cool to see like how all of that transitions then to the customer as the end user and the feedback we get once we've launched it.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: So I'm really curious from your standpoint, and I really want your opinion on this, because I think it's a conversation that I often get tangled in.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: And that is this idea of from the formulation standpoint, maintaining a brand that is obviously efficacious, right?
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: But then also being able to say, like, no, we're, you know, quote unquote clean or what, you know, because I don't really believe in the word clean.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: I believe in the word safe, you know, I believe in the word efficacious, but I do know the value of clean, you know, I do understand it.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: So how has that been for you guys?
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: You know, just shaping a brand that is rooted in true science, you're you're doing all the right things, your your formulas are great, you know, still a wonderful option, you know, for anybody who is looking for a clean brand, you know, that's what they want.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: So, what is that like, you know, in terms of how things go with formulating?
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: So that's a great question.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: And one of the things that we are at our core understand inside Brixy when we're product developing and we're looking at ingredient selection is that we're using the best available science and we understand that science can change, right?
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: Like, or not that it changes, but we're discovering new things.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: So we are never committed to just like one ingredient so hardcore that we're not willing to switch it up if science shows that that ingredient is potentially unsafe or is not as effective as something else we could be using.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: So we really truly start with the science leads the decisions.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Um, and then we look to third-party partners that we trust to help us with the safety and efficacy of that.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: So Kevin has a really amazing relationship with the CEO of the EWG, which is the environmental working group.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: They had, I think it was like the first sunscreen thing that actually color-coded for safety the ingredients on their sunscreen and their products.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: And so, like when we're building products, we're looking to EWG standards to see what the rating is for safety.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: I love that site too, their skin deep database, because it also shows like links to studies of as to why they've rated a certain thing, or it'll straight up tell you like more science needs to be done, more research needs to be done.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: We don't know this particular ingredient's rating yet.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: And so when we're building new products, we really look to them as like a third-party kind of touch point to make sure that we're on the same page.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: All of our skincare facial care bars we just released, like there are no ingredients in there that are above a one or a two rating, which is the best rating you can get.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: So the higher the number, you probably know this, ECTA, so forgive me, but the higher, for those listening who may not know this, the higher the number, um, the more potentially toxic or irritating it can be.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: And the lower the number in the EWG skin database, the safer it is.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: So we really want to stick to those ones and twos to make sure that our products are safe for folks with sensitive skin or sensitivities.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: Another thing in the world of like quote unquote clean that we do a little bit differently, and I agree with you, by the way, that clean is a very vague term.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: We really try to not use it in our marketing and on our packaging anywhere because it's sort of just this like vague term and a catch-all, but it doesn't really tell you what it means.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: And so we try to avoid that altogether.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: But yeah, safe is kind of our heritage.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: It's a good point that you made though, that you guys do reference, you know, resources like the EWG because this is for consumers listening.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: Like you have to understand like the ingredients that are in a lot of formulas, you know, whether that's skincare, hair care, whatever, you know, they might be working really well, but like they there needs to be a synergy of ingredients.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: You know, it cannot just be that you have, you know, really harsh ingredients, even though they're doing a job, and then you know, you've got something else in there that's gonna react with that.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's a real concern.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: That's why I created the safe field because there's a real thing called, you know, interactions, chemical interactions, you know, and that's more important than anything else.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: And so when your people are looking at ingredients, that's why I said what I said earlier about your ingredient list.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: I love it so much, because it's very easy to understand how these ingredients are not going to cause adverse reactions when they interact.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: That's very important because there's a lot of consumers out here that we're chasing the new thing, you know, we're chasing the new innovations and the new ingredients.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: Do you guys know how those are gonna react with your, you know, other stuff that's in that same formulation?
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: No.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: You all you also don't know what that means for shelf life.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: You also don't know what it means for any comorbidities that you have, you know how that's gonna react.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: So all that's why I said I like the word safe.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: I don't like the word clean because safe implies a lot more than clean.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: And so I'm a huge believer in making sure that even if you're using ingredients that are tried and true, use them because they're the ones that consumers are gonna benefit from.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you're right.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: The the connotation of the word safe over clean is a lot more, it gives you a lot more context just by that one word.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: The other thing I think that we took an approach on in terms of safety in our formulas is that we don't use the word fragrance or perfume anywhere on our packaging on any of our products.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: And there has been, you know, arguments made by perfume companies or other brands that, you know, they feel that the ingredients that make up their scents are proprietary and therefore not to be disclosed.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: For us, you know, we'd rather go with safe.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: We'd rather make sure that customers, the sensitivities to ingredients that can be found in fragrance, don't have to worry because we list every ingredient right on our packaging.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: We really try to build simple scents.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: Again, back to that, you know, methodology of just being simple.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: Um, and we build like one to five ingredients into a scent, and that's it.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: We don't have like a list of 25 different things.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: And so we've really done that in an effort to be transparent with our ingredients for anyone that does have sensitivities or is curious, also to be safer, because I think historically brands have used that word fragrance where they can kind of roll an ingredient up under there they don't maybe want everyone to know that can potentially cause irritation or reactions in people.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: So we definitely wanted to avoid that.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: Of course, just be in an effort to be transparent.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: I think consumers really want that nowadays, and the education level of the average consumer is so much better than it used to be in terms of what they're looking for and how efficacious certain you know ingredients are, which is great and amazing.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: We want to honor that by not trying to treat them like they don't know what they're looking at.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: So oh yeah, consumers now.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's more education out there now than ever before, you know.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: And it's actually, I mean, for me as a scientist, I love seeing that, you know.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: I love that all of us are so keen to learn about what the heck we're putting on our bodies in our body.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: You know, also the conversation comes up, Jen, you know, of kids nowadays, you know, like one of the big reasons I really like Brixie is I feel like you can recommend it to anybody.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: Like you you don't have to hesitate.
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: At the end of the day, I want to be able to say, you know, to my niece, hey, don't worry about this brand.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: You can use this safely.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be good for you, you know, you're fine.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: It that feels good to be able to recommend products, you know, because they're at such a vulnerable place in their development where they want to be able to, you know, use things and feel good about what they're doing, but also more importantly, their parents.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: Like parents want to feel good about what you're giving to your child or what your child is using.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: And I think there's a real need now more than ever for brands that are kind of sticking to this tried and true process, but still innovating, you know, and they're doing it in a way where it's truly inclusive.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: You know, it used to be just about like, you know, okay, are you including everybody from all different ethnicities?
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: But now it's also about teenage consumers, you know, the the younger consumers, the newer generations.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: Like what messages are we sending to them, you know, and what options are we providing to them?
- 32:50SPEAKER_01: So in that way, I feel like you guys really shine to me as a brand because you're very, very approachable.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: And that's that's a huge plus.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: So I I want to ask you, you know, what was that, you know, whole process for you, you know, from a marketing angle, you know, really creating a vision for the brand that was really easy to relate to and approachable for really anybody.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: Well, when we were putting together like the brand personality, the packaging design, you know, we wanted to bring something really light and fun and positive to our brand personality to a very serious problem of plastic waste, right?
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: Like we didn't want to be the granola brand that like sort of makes you feel bad for having something in plastic, right?
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: Like everyone's got it.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: We're doing our best.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: And we really wanted to meet people where they were, introduce them to a new way of doing something, and we wanted it to be fun and young and energetic.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of what we wanted to emulate.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: And we, I feel like we really landed on an amazing packaging design that kind of jumps off the shelf and conveys like happiness and smiles, right?
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: It's the colors, it's the layout.
- 33:54SPEAKER_00: But and then when we put our formulas into them, you know, we wanted all of our products to be safe for just like you said, anyone, inclusive of all ages.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: And so that's why we built our Brixy blend because that's something that can benefit the teens and tweens that are really excited to get into a skincare routine and maybe try their hand at influencing or, you know, being on social media or just having a good skincare routine for themselves because they see their mom or their sister doing it, um, all the way through the life cycle of somebody that's, you know, postmenopausal or dealing with um mature skin issues.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: And that changes for people as they go through the stages of life.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: And so we wanted to make sure our formulas at a very base level benefited everyone, regardless of age, skin type, and then layer in some of those hero ingredients that target the needs of the different stages of life, if you will.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of how we approached it when building the design of the brand and then the formulas of the brand.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: I feel like we did a really great job.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: It's so, it's been so interesting the last two years.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: When we first launched, we really thought, okay, the younger generation, the Gen Zs and Alphas, they're gonna really see this packaging, see the mission, and they're gonna get it, right?
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: And they're gonna love it.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: And they have.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: But what's been super exciting to also see is that that 35 to 65 consumer is also interested in the mission and also curious about the latest kind of like way of shampooing or taking care of their skin, or maybe they just need something that's travel friendly, like you said, with a busy lifestyle.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: We've actually got the majority of our customers really fall in that 35 to 65 age range.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: And we have a ton of like followers on social media that are that 18 to 35 range.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: So it's kind of cool.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: I feel like we're capturing such a wide age range.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: And I do feel like it's due to our approach to our brand personality and the inclusivity of the formulas being, you know, great as a baseline for everyone.
- 35:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I love it.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: I really love it.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think it's so relatable.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: That's why I asked you that question because the brand is really relatable, like it doesn't feel scary, you know what I mean, to approach it and to find an option and to really like fall in love, you know, because that's the problem nowadays.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: It's so cluttered out here, you know, in terms of how many options.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: And that's fine, you know, to each their own, you know, whatever you like, you like.
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: But it's so important to be able to say, you know what, I'm not worried about this brand.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: I think they got it down.
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: Like I see, I use their formulas, I use their formulas, I like it.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: It's gentle, I can recommend it to somebody.
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: I don't have to worry about if that person that I recommended it to, if they're gonna like it or not, because I know they will, you know, that's a really, I think that's a very powerful process for consumers, like that we go through.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: And that's, I mean, I'm not gonna lie, that's how I discovered some of my most used products in life, you know, with somebody else recommending it to me.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: And so that is huge.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: And I feel like you guys have just nailed it, you know, in terms of just making this so easy to relate to as a consumer.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh I don't know who can't relate to a bar product, you know.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, I watched my dad using bar soap my whole life, you know, like that's the first product I was ever introduced to.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: And um, even now, you know, whenever I I embark on any products in that format, you know, it's just brings back nostalgia and and trust.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: So I I love it.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: I think it's really cool what you're doing.
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: And you know, I really recommend it.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: I appreciate it.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: You know, it's been interesting um as we've had more and more conversations with folks that are getting introduced to the brand, whether it's at a trade show or someone just finds it in the wild and sends it an email.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: But um, there's been a lot of folks that have said, oh yeah, this is something that my grandmother used, or we used these back in the day, but the science has come so much farther now and the formulations are just so wildly better that the experience has really taken a huge leap forward.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: Um, and then I also discovered through some conversations at a trade show that bar shampoos are quite normal in other parts of the world.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: For example, yeah, like so.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: I guess Greece.
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: Um, I was chatting with a distributor who handles like importing products from the US and other countries into Greece.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: And he was like, Oh, we have products like this, they're widely used.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: Women know that this is like great for their hair, and they use it all the time.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: So it's kind of so funny for me and so wonderful to hear that, you know, there are other places where this is very normal.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: It's very normal.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: If you're no India is another one, I'll tell you right now.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, honestly, I'm Indian, my whole family's Indian.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: We I watched like my grandmother and my mother like grow up, you know, growing up, I watched them use these kind of products that were all in bar format, all of them.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: Like it works beautifully.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: That's how they actually use products in a lot of these countries.
- 38:47SPEAKER_01: I completely agree.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: I think it's more common than we realize.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: Indian women's hair is gorgeous, like it's always just long and thick.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, okay, how do I do that?
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: They do not coconut oil.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: Every Indian woman I've ever met in my life, I've never known.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: We are like, it's part of the culture in India.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: Like everybody does this, north, south, everywhere, and it it works.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: And that's why I I remember like when I looked at your ingredients, I was like, oh my god, is there an Indian person on their board?
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: Because it's like literally, it's the best ingredient for hair.
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: So absolutely.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: That's so cool to hear that.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it just reinforces like what we've heard in other places.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: So it's great to like see that same thing coming back to us.
- 39:27SPEAKER_00: Like, we're on the right track.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: This is absolutely working.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: No, I love it.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: I love it so much.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: I love Brixie, I love the brand, I love what you're guys are doing.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: You guys are just, you know, you're going in a direction I think that this industry really needs to go in, and that's simplicity, effective, efficacious, inclusivity.
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, we need to really understand that like all of these buzzwords that we hear as consumers, you know, sustainability included, all of these buzzwords, like they really can be, you know, all in one, like in one brand.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: It can exist.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: And it's it can work, it doesn't have to be one thing or the other.
- 40:04SPEAKER_01: You guys don't have to choose between sustainable or efficacious, you know, clean or scientific.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: It doesn't have to be like that.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: It can all be in one place.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: And so I just I really love that you're standing for that and you're paving that message and putting it out there.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I really encourage our listeners, you guys gotta check out Brixie.

- 40:29SPEAKER_01: But Jen, before we go, I want to get just some advice from you.
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: I know you have such an accomplished career, and I would love for you to offer some advice because a lot of young adults listen in, you know, that are going into marketing or they're going into, you know, a related field.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: I'd love for you to give some advice, you know, about this industry, you know, the beauty industry and working in it or anything you've learned that you could share.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, something that I've really learned since working on Brixie and being part of this, you know, new chapter in my career is the world of marketing is always evolving and changing really, really fast.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: And so I would just say that you have to have your thumb kind of on the pulse of what's going on.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: So stay involved in like reading the news that comes out around ingredients that are comes out around what's driving consumer behavior and just really keep your nose to the grindstone on what's happening because it does change so fast.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: And don't let yourself get discouraged because it's easy to feel like you're playing from behind a little bit because of how fast things change, but that's also the beauty of it and the fun of it.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: Um, and so I really just would encourage somebody who's getting into this career field, especially in the beauty industry, which is so fast-paced and ever-changing, to look at it as the reason they got into marketing in the first place.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: Fun.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: They want to enjoy what they do and not to feel too worried and scared about how quickly things are adjusting and changing.
- 41:50SPEAKER_00: So enjoy it.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: Make sure you're having fun and make sure you're constantly learning and learning from the people you're directly working with, mainly learning from your customers, make sure you're listening to that feedback.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, keeping, you know, up to speed with what's being said in the media and you know, industry news about, you know, what's going on within your world of your products.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I hope that wasn't too much advice, but I just, you know, it's all about perspective and just keeping a positive outlook, keeping up to speed with things and having fun with it.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: That's really great advice.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: I love that.
