- 1:03Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help.
- 1:06Other Alcoholics are chiefs of Brady.
- 1:10Hi my name is Trish and I'm a substance abuser and basically
- 1:18main reason I started abusing substances beginning was mainly
- 1:23alcohol was to fit in. I grew up, I was a pretty
- 1:29individual person, didn't really have many friends and I was very
- 1:35envious of the core people. So started drinking pretty much
- 1:41regularly when I was 15. It went into drinking at work
- 1:48and and I was, well, I'm in license at 16 and it was never a
- 1:54moment where I wasn't drunk driving.
- 1:57I was always the desert drunk driver, which was a now I look
- 2:01back is pretty, pretty hard thing.
- 2:03You know, I'm very lucky I didn't kill anyone or kill
- 2:06myself. And and then as the years went
- 2:13by, got addicted to weed and just general, general stuck.
- 2:20And I went to university after high school and got really hard
- 2:24on the the liquor then and came a regular at the UNI bar and my
- 2:30local pub. That was when I was about 17,
- 2:37got to the point I was that much of a regular at the my local pub
- 2:40that when my 18th birthday rolled around, they were that
- 2:43shocked. And they've been serving me for
- 2:46three years prior to that and they couldn't really do
- 2:49anything. But it was a pretty, pretty
- 2:53horrid but and then as the years went by, I got into the heart of
- 2:58stuff, the methamphetamines. I was pretty bad on that.
- 3:02I was very, very dependent. I was didn't really earn that
- 3:06much on Centrelink and work and whatnot and to afford the drugs.
- 3:11But you know, I've my housemaid at the time was dealing with
- 3:16amvitamins at that time and I pretty much got into that and
- 3:22got caught by the coppers, went to to court, put myself into
- 3:30DACA detox a few times, didn't really stick.
- 3:35Always, always relapsed back on the weed.
- 3:39And then my last court case was my sentencing and it was one of
- 3:45the scariest moments of my life where I'm standing in the box
- 3:49and the judge is pretty much saying that I'm going to get put
- 3:52away for quite a quite a few years.
- 3:55You know, 'cause I got done for quite a few assaults and there
- 4:00was just a few charges on my back.
- 4:02And he pretty much said to me, the only reason you're getting
- 4:05off today is because of that woman in that stand crying,
- 4:09which with my mother, you know, she was the one that saved me
- 4:13that day. And I still didn't learn, still
- 4:16didn't break the addiction. I still continued to smoke meth,
- 4:20weed, drink. It was just one of those big
- 4:24spirals. You know, I didn't think I was
- 4:26worth it. I didn't have the friends around
- 4:29anymore because I didn't have the access to the drugs.
- 4:32So. But I still found means to get
- 4:36it and is to steal, lie, cheat, all the the usual things that
- 4:45addicts do. You know, I was one of those
- 4:49people that no one could ever trust.
- 4:53I couldn't even trust myself. I was a compulsive liar, you
- 4:58know, I started believing the lies that I was saying.
- 5:01And even to today, I, I start telling the story to someone and
- 5:05I'm like, oh, no, wait, I've got to step back and tell the, the,
- 5:09the, the truth of that story because I'm still reminiscing
- 5:14and trying to remember what I did.
- 5:17And it is, it's just a vicious cycle basically.
- 5:21And found these rooms quite a few years ago, I think it was in
- 5:262019 when I first entered, entered these rooms at Elizabeth
- 5:32Ace Home group. You know, he was off the way for
- 5:36a bit, you know, but I, I got back onto it and I was still
- 5:42going to meetings while I was still using.
- 5:44But then I just didn't see the point if I was still using, you
- 5:48know, I, I didn't get it, you know, the, the meaning of a, a
- 5:53didn't really kick in at that time.
- 5:57And I, I just continued on my own.
- 5:59And I was in a relationship that was rather violent and mentally
- 6:06abusive. And I was about 6-7 years ago
- 6:11now. And I, I still got quite a lot
- 6:15of post traumatic stress from that, that relationship and all
- 6:18my past relationships where I was pretty much treated like a
- 6:21doormat. And now I with someone who I
- 6:29recently have just married on the whole sudden age is gone.
- 6:33And we both got clean together two years ago on September the
- 6:3923rd. That pretty much happened.
- 6:44And after just continuous marijuana abuse, you know, I
- 6:49quit methamphetamines over 10 years ago and I kicked the
- 6:52kicked that out of the way and having really been a solid
- 6:56drinker for, you know, a good 1012 years now.
- 6:59So it was mainly the marijuana that was kicking me up.
- 7:04Then the Damon was winning. And then my brother and my
- 7:09sister-in-law sat us down. This is when not long after me
- 7:13and my partner were made homeless and we're living in my
- 7:18mum's shed. You know, just the the fact of
- 7:21being homeless again at the age I think I was 3020 that 30 so 4
- 7:29years ago. And it just brought back a lot
- 7:33of positive things have happened and I've been homeless for
- 7:38addiction and pretty much nowhere to live.
- 7:42And but I had a job always pretty much had a job half the
- 7:45time. And then my brother and sister
- 7:49all sat us down and basically said, we've bought a house, do
- 7:54you want to move into it? And we're like, yes, took that
- 7:57opportunity up. No, still using.
- 8:01I was at that time, I was working at a recycling company
- 8:05as a truck driver. That was a pretty toxic
- 8:08environment. Pretty much all the all the boys
- 8:11that worked there smoke weed. And I pretty much had a bong in
- 8:16my work locker and would come back from a run and smoke and
- 8:22all that. And then had another
- 8:24intervention from the family. You know, they were worried and
- 8:29extremely worried about how much money we were spending.
- 8:31They sat down and actually put a pen to paper and thought I could
- 8:36visualize how much I was actually spending.
- 8:38And I was spending almost double water I was earning on just
- 8:43marijuana. You know, I wasn't eating
- 8:46properly. As long as my animals were fed,
- 8:49I didn't really care. I was eating the bare minimum,
- 8:53but it was just one of those things, you know, if I lost my
- 8:56license, there's my livelihood, there's there's the roof over my
- 8:59head gone. But that's one thing I always
- 9:02catch from my addiction years with the roof over my head.
- 9:05And like, except for the times where I got kicked out of my
- 9:09mother's house, you know, it was very brief homelessness.
- 9:14But if I ever did ever have a home where rent was due, that
- 9:18was always paid. It got to the point where I gave
- 9:21my mum my bank card and access to my bank.
- 9:24So if I was renting, she was able to pay my rent before I
- 9:28even touched my money. But now I'm of 34 and two years
- 9:34claim just gone on September the 23rd, which is the, I can solely
- 9:40say the longest I've ever been sober since I've picked up a
- 9:43substance. You know, I have quite a few
- 9:47friends from high school as well as through my addiction days
- 9:52that are sober as well. And it's, it's a, it's a
- 9:57different lifestyle. I'm still still getting used to
- 10:00it. You know, I've now got a job at
- 10:03BOC gases. I'm a truck driver for them
- 10:06delivering some gas cylinders and all that kind of stuff, you
- 10:12know, and I only applied for that because my doctor actually
- 10:16rang me and said that my drug test came back clean.
- 10:19So I was like, yes, I can apply for jobs that require a drug
- 10:22test, you know, because I had that solid time where I would
- 10:26have a drug test and I knew I was going to fail 100% knew I
- 10:31was going to fail. Now, mainly from my corrections,
- 10:34from my convictions that I got done with.
- 10:38But now solidly working for DOC gases for over a year and a half
- 10:44now and had multiple drug tests where I'm like, yeah, let me do
- 10:50what I need to, to get this test away and pass.
- 10:53You know, it's, is this a real feeling, knowing that if I'm
- 10:57going to take a test and I'm going to pass, it's, it's a
- 11:02strong proudness feeling that I have inside that, you know, I've
- 11:08finally done it. But you know, there's, there's
- 11:11never that promise in the future that I'll never go back.
- 11:15It's why it's always one day at a time, as all the old timers
- 11:18say. And and now I'm starting to just
- 11:22start to say saying as well, you know, so, and as they always
- 11:26say, you know, you've got to keep coming back.
- 11:28And it's just one of those things I'm to have all my AA
- 11:34friends, you know, I've got more a a friends than actually to
- 11:39have normal friends. And they're like my family that
- 11:45I written half of my guests for my wedding were my a a friends
- 11:49and all the old timers that were there.
- 11:51So this is known proof that they've made a massive impact on
- 11:56my life. And you know, I'd, I don't ever
- 12:01want to go back. I can't make that promise that I
- 12:03never will, but I've got the the means and the tolls to continue
- 12:11being sober and as long as I will go to sleep sober, I'm I'm
- 12:15waking up sober, you know, it's, it's a lot easier, especially my
- 12:20partner was got sober with me as well.
- 12:24And there any way I could really get sober was we went Interstate
- 12:29for a holiday in Sydney because I knew if I went on a holiday in
- 12:33Adelaide, it wouldn't be long until I went somewhere to find
- 12:36something. At least if I'm in a different
- 12:39state, I don't know where anything is.
- 12:41So that was a a big, big achievement on both our
- 12:46behalves, you know, and they're just the will to want to be
- 12:54normal in some formal way. But you know, us, US addict X
- 12:59addicts and recovering, recovering addicts are, we're
- 13:02never normal. We're always that weird bunch.
- 13:04But I'm just glad to finally have a relationship with my
- 13:10parents again. You know, as I've always said,
- 13:14you know, my dad has been saying that when I come round lately,
- 13:18it's not just because I want something.
- 13:21I just want to go around there to see him and have a chat, you
- 13:24know? And my mother's my best friend
- 13:26again, you know, I'm 100% honest with them, my family, everyone.
- 13:33And being in a relationship with someone that's going through the
- 13:38the same, same direction and the same recovery Rd. that I am is
- 13:43is a big encouragement. And it really helps having
- 13:48someone to that understands what I'm going through on a
- 13:53day-to-day basis. You know, I wake up, she's
- 13:57there, I come home, she's there. It's an amazing feeling.
- 14:01And she knows that I'm always there for her as well.
- 14:04I'm, I'm, I'm her biggest fan and she's my biggest fan.
- 14:11So it, it's a great feeling just being sober and sending out the
- 14:17message to people who are struggling.
- 14:19You know, every time I get a chance to talk to someone, one
- 14:23of my mates who to think they're struggling, always let them
- 14:26know, you know, the number, you know, is the, the a, a is
- 14:32whatnot. And we're always here whenever
- 14:35you need us, when you're ready, you know, because you can't help
- 14:39someone that doesn't want to be helped.
- 14:40And at that time, you know, I did want to be helped by my
- 14:44family. They knew I was struggling just
- 14:48just to buy food or no borrowing money to to get smokes, as I
- 14:54said, you know, but knew exactly what it was going to half my
- 14:58money was going to the tick and there's my pay gone and oh shit,
- 15:03I've got to have money for the next fortnight.
- 15:06But it's a good feeling. I got money in the bank.
- 15:10I'm like a bill comes up. I'm I'm in in credit in all my
- 15:13bills. It's is this surreal feeling
- 15:19being they're sober, you know, it's I'm still in my early days,
- 15:23you know, I'm still young, I'm only two.
- 15:26So there's a a lot of old timers out there that have been 20-30
- 15:35forty years. And it's a real inspiration
- 15:38that, you know, the there is a massive hope for a great future.
- 15:44And I wouldn't be in for a great future if I was still using.
- 15:49It's. It's just surreal without, you
- 15:52know, you drop one thing and there's endless possibilities on
- 15:57the other side. It's, yeah, just a extremely
- 16:01great feeling. And yeah.
- 16:08How did you go with the God pad of Trish?
- 16:15The what? Sorry.
- 16:16The God pad. Say, I never really bothered me.
- 16:20Like I don't, I'm not a big believer in God, but I do
- 16:26believe in guardian angels and things that are always there to
- 16:32help you out. You know, I went to a psychic
- 16:36quite a few years ago and he basically explained A presence
- 16:42that was my brother, who was my mother's first born, still was a
- 16:49stillborn. And so I've always seen him as a
- 16:53as guardian Angel of mine. You know, I've never had a
- 16:59really big problem with people who believe in God.
- 17:02It's just don't try and make me believe in what they believe in.
- 17:11But yeah, I do believe in a higher power, that there is
- 17:14something out there that is guiding us and protecting us.
- 17:18And, you know, there was many a times throughout my addiction
- 17:22days where I can 100% say that my, my, my pal was definitely,
- 17:28definitely looking after me. And, you know, I was saying to
- 17:32the, the earth and the world that no, they're not ready yet,
- 17:35that they've got to keep going. They've got something to, to
- 17:37prove and something to do. So the, the God side and the
- 17:42religious sides never really fazed me.
- 17:45You know, it's, it's to people's interpretation, you know, of
- 17:49exactly what is said, you know, So I'm not really, really hot
- 17:53faced about that. So yeah.
- 17:57Yeah, it's just some people just bring it up because some people
- 18:01have a problem and. There's a lot of people out
- 18:07there that, you know, as soon as that word God is said, it's
- 18:09like, and that one not no part of that, but with the, the
- 18:14promises and the 12 steps, you know, and my serenity prayer, I,
- 18:20you know, you can pretty much be praying to, you know, a chair,
- 18:27you know, because it's doing its job.
- 18:29You know, the, you know, there's plenty of things out there that
- 18:35people use as higher powers that has got nothing to do with a
- 18:38religious side. So it's it's, yeah, it's just
- 18:42one of those things. It's everyone's age to their
- 18:45own. Very good.
- 18:47Yeah. Send me.
- 18:48That's the that's the right attitude to have rather than try
- 18:52and fight any of it, isn't it? Yeah, definitely.
- 18:56You know, it's the only way to let go.
- 18:59And, you know, because you've got to let go of all that, that
- 19:03anger towards any form of religion because it's, it really
- 19:07isn't. It's more of a spiritual program
- 19:09than it is a religious. You know, the way I've, I've
- 19:13always seen and heard and always portrayed in my my sobriety.
- 19:20You know, there's always something out there.
- 19:22You know, I do my my prayers every day and I always praying
- 19:27for the world and praying for my family.
- 19:31You know, it's not to God. It's the to pretty much
- 19:34whatever's up there that wants to protect us.
- 19:37That's that's what I'm I'm praying to.
- 19:39Yep. Very good.
- 19:41Very good, yeah. Well, thanks very.
- 19:44Much for your share. That's all good.
- 19:47When's it going to be aired? I will inform.
