- 0:11[SPEAKER_03]: It's up for everybody.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome on in that time of week.
- 0:13[SPEAKER_03]: It is the sooner it's on SI podcast here.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_03]: Wherever you get your podcasts.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_03]: If you're YouTube, what's up?
- 0:18[SPEAKER_03]: If not, what's up?
- 0:20[SPEAKER_03]: Also, the whole crew is here as we wind down a little bit.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_03]: The portal sees it right in here for use.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_03]: You got our man who was fighting through.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_03]: Ghost adventure, John.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_03]: I gotta say you clearly have not launched enough ghost television shows because that ring camera footage I was like that is a mob or a spider that is on your camera John Hoover and Tulsa yeah We've had some weird things going on on our deck the last couple of days last night There was a little flashing light.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_00]: It's just bouncing back and forth and moving around and it seemed to get angry when I turned my attention Who has like what the heck is it somebody said go wipe off your camera?
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: There's something on the IR
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: So I did that, and then today, micro burst comes and blows on my furniture off my deck.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, hang on, wait, what's going on back here?
- 1:03[SPEAKER_03]: Who's going through it?
- 1:05[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, you fastball fans are going through it.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_03]: Carson was on the last night, our man Carson field.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sorry.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_03]: And I don't know if it quite qualifies for a hardship, but I do apologize for assigning you to be there last night.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was a tough one last night.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_02]: Definitely saw some cool dunks though that might be the silver lining of my experience at the LNC last night.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_02]: All things considered though, doing well, happy to be potting with you guys.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_03]: We got the man Ryan Aber, who, him and I'll be ramping up our women's basketball coverage as LSU and Kim Loki walks into town.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_03]: on Sunday, then you got a time for another pod, South Carolina, but Ryan will you be present for a hey buddy as Kim Mokie makes her great turn to the LNC?
- 1:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I think we need to bring Jason Kersey back, both for that one.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_01]: The real question is, was Sherry Cole being attendance and it's not going to surprise me if she is as Sherry and Kim share some love.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_01]: over the years.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: So it'll it'll it'll be a fun week at the LNC with the women's basketball and we'll see if they're able to bounce back from a couple of tough losses.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, well, hit all of that here in a little bit.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_03]: We'll get to the disaster on the men's side of the Louis Noble Center, the women's hoops right at there.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_03]: And, but let us dive into the football world gentlemen.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_03]: Some news and notes from around college for a while before we get into Oklahoma, specifically.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_03]: Don't know if you guys saw this or not.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_03]: I think it was Dave Upden, who was hanging out at the big coaches convention.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_03]: Looks like they have the coaches.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_03]: At the convention, have you honestly voted to
- 2:43[SPEAKER_03]: put forth to the D1 committees, a nine game red shirt rule instead of a four game red shirt rule.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_03]: So that's nice to get rubber stamp, things like that.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_03]: So I guess we'll we'll see if that means that you have guys it's insane if that passes that now you can play the entirety of conference play and then all of a postseason and still
- 3:02[SPEAKER_03]: maintain your red shirt, mean while if Owen Heinecky steps onto the field once he's having to appeal for lacrosse, that's kind of wonky kind of wild.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_03]: Wednesday as we record today is the deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NFL draft.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_03]: So I would say if you see us looking at our phones stuff like that, I don't know if we're going to get an announcement officially or not, but
- 3:25[SPEAKER_03]: If you're looking at, you know, I'd say a titanium kit Lewis like today is the day they have to file the paperwork, start that process of having filed all that stuff.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_03]: I would imagine that if they're coming back, which it feels like they are, Oklahoma would want to announce that and get all the pump and circumstance and all that jazz.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_03]: But just going to give you a heads up as of right now, 1220, no announcements, stuff like that, if something changes while we're potting, we'll let you know if it happens right after we get done potting, go to the website at OaklandSundersonasside.com, we'll cover every
- 3:53[SPEAKER_03]: while some announcements.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_03]: There was an official announcement.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_03]: It's been announced by everywhere other than the University of Oklahoma, a new face that will be on the Oklahoma sideline next year, not playing, not helmeted yet.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_03]: You guessed it that is legendary Las Vegas Raider Jason Whitton will be the new to, oh, and he also played for the Cowboys.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_03]: Jason Whitton, who's going into the NFL Hall of Fame, like,
- 4:19[SPEAKER_03]: As soon as they can like get the ink dry in the press release out and officially announce all that stuff for him coming up his retirement He's gonna come in and a big big splash.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_03]: What was that last Thursday that that was announced because of course They don't time news to our podcast schedule John this was a a position group that has been circled.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_03]: I think that thought to get into the
- 4:42[SPEAKER_03]: The Joe John of it all, I think everybody knows the score there.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_03]: We've yelled about it for years and years and years, but not only have had some time to sit on it and kind of simmer and think about it, big, big splash higher for Oklahoma.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_03]: What do you think Jason Witton's going to bring to the sooner?
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: How angry is soon or nation going to be if he's having a mispractice in July to go be inducted into the Prophobic Hall of Fame?
- 5:03[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, he should be coaching our tight ends this week, just kidding, of course, somewhat.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, he's a guy that I did a video on this last week when it happened and I feel strongly that, hey, he's probably going to coach him up just fine, be he brings credibility because
- 5:23[SPEAKER_00]: But the credibility that he brings has planted seeds already throughout the coaching world in the state of Texas.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, Cowboys legend, right?
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: Mr. Jason Whitton, the Jason Whitton Award, right?
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: NFL Man of the Year Award winning, Jason Whitton.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody loves the dude.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: He's a great guy, family man, Christian up bringing all that good stuff.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: Well, when you take that with the star on your helmet and you take it out into the communities in Texas and you start saying hey coach hey high school coach at ABC high school
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: You've got a couple of four stars and five stars.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: Can we swing by this afternoon and maybe see your guys up close, meet these guys, see him face to face?
- 6:10[SPEAKER_00]: Jason Whitton's coming to our school?
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_00]: Let's line up the principal and the board of directors and the high school cup.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody's going to want to see and meet and get some face time with Jason Whitton, including
- 6:23[SPEAKER_00]: the four star and the five star recruits and their parents and their families and their agents right just brings an instant cashier when you're Jason Witton and you walk in somewhere in Texas and you somewhere where you have coached for the last five years right you've been a successful high school coach winning state championships in 22 or 23 and 24
- 6:44[SPEAKER_00]: you all of a sudden you're coaching the Oklahoma sooners and you're looking for tight ends you're you're sorting through tight ends and everywhere across America but especially in Texas.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's going to be the biggest thing that Jason Witton brings.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_00]: Whether or not he can magically suddenly coach the OU tight ends.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: That would be good.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_00]: That would be great.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: But just being able to land those guys, go out and recruit to and same for the portal.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: If you got guys in the portal who know who Jason Whitten is, holy cow, Jason Whitten, yeah, I'll take his phone call, so that's going to be to me the biggest factor of having him on staff.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm with who if it's just so big from a credibility standpoint and a recruiting standpoint.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that's a hell of a recruiting pitch.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_02]: Like, hey, we have a future NFL tight-end on staff as the tight-ends coach.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_02]: Why don't you want to learn from what this guy has to say?
- 7:32[SPEAKER_02]: He's he's done some good things for the Dallas Cowboys, very short-stint with the Raiders as Ryan alluded to.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_02]: But as far as is coaching experience, really his only experience is being the head coach at a private school in Texas.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_02]: So not a ton, but successful program for everything that I've heard.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_02]: And it's not like his role is going to be just this massive overarching role he gets to specialize with what he knows best, the tight in position.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_02]: That's obviously going to be such a different looking group next year when you look at Hayden Hayden.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_02]: Hansen, Rocky Bears coming in, no more gearing cannick, Will Huggins, Carson Kent.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_02]: It's a complete overhaul of that position group and having someone that's still fairly youthful has done it for a long time at the NFL level.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_02]: It's just so big and I think it solidifies the foundation for the future, assuming the offensive staff stays in place for the next several years.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_02]: It seems just on the surface like a home run for the sooners.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, April is just real quick.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_03]: I know we had you write the story.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_03]: You did some digging on former NFL guys that have made it over.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_03]: And I know that that'll be the first thing that if you're stoked, I think you should be stoked.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_03]: There's going to be a lot of people that immediately go, well, hang on.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_03]: He's not actually coach tight ends yet.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_03]: But you dug, there's a lot of guys that have made this jump.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_03]: And I do think it is important though, Abraham, it's not a, I retired from the NFL yesterday.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_03]: Now I'm immediately hopping over to Oklahoma.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_03]: coaching experience not tight-in coaching experience specifically at this level, but it's not like Jay Switton's come to this thing blind.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I think that that's helped not only in building him as a coach, you know, and we'll see just have got a coach of tight-ins.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: He is, because sometimes it's really hard for superstars to coach, you know, mortals.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_01]: uh... in in the sport that they uh... they excel that i mean at you think about uh... you know ryan sandberg in uh... and ted Williams on on the baseball side sometimes it's hard to speak that language to them but i think had one jason weapons at high school experience helps
- 9:47[SPEAKER_01]: but also keeps him, you know, ingratiated with the Texas high school football coaches.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_01]: I think that that's as big of an element to this thing as there is.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: But I think more and more really good NFL players have started making that leap to coaching colleges.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_01]: Now, many of them go straight to be in head coaches.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_01]: We saw D on Sanders do that.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: Trent Doffer did it, you know, a couple of other guys,
- 10:16[SPEAKER_01]: we've seen more and more Eddie George did it although he's back in the assistant coaching ranks but we've seen more and more guys take the route of his assistants, Warren Sapp and Marshall Fulk on the Colorado staff of the Marshall Fulk got a head coaching job, Patrick Surtane senior I think it's one of the ones who took a very similar path
- 10:39[SPEAKER_01]: to what Jason Whitten has gone through and Patrick Startane's senior was let go by the Florida State coaching staff or on the Florida State coaching staff recently, but had some success there, both recruiting and in developing.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_01]: Like I said, it's going to, it's going to take some time to figure out if Jason Whitten can coach that ends, but I think the recruiting element, especially initially, is going to be a big boost for that group and their ability to bring in big time players at that position.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_00]: I'll just get quickly, quickly, I'll probably over-simplified that Jason Whitton's going to go in and recruit the best tight ends in Texas, they're going to bring him in, probably I would guess, as a closer for all positions, okay, quarterbacks, running backs, especially offense, right?
- 11:32[SPEAKER_00]: Offensive line, maybe even some defensive guys are going to get some FaceTime with Jason Whitton.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, especially I think that one linebacker from down there might get a little bit of FaceTime with Jason Whitton.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, number one are creating about it.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_03]: You got to win the linebacker.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we're Cooper.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_03]: What number?
- 11:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Witten is his last name.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, Carson, I think that's right.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, this is, it's really interesting because the results kind of like a Abraham was saying is mixed when you see these former NFL stars going to be coaches at the college level.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_02]: You'll look at Colorado.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_02]: They haven't been amazing.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_02]: They had one pretty good season.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_02]: Her medver, he did Arizona State was not particularly
- 12:12[SPEAKER_02]: but you see the recruiting that these guys are able to do.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, Colorado, not only getting Travis Hunter, but should do our Sanders, as you got Jade and Daniels when Hermed Burgess was the coach.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_02]: So I mean, that credibility does play a big role.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_02]: And then I think when you take somebody like Jason went into a smaller role where he's not leading the whole team.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_02]: He's not playing the Brent Binnables role.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_02]: He is focused on one position group.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_02]: And then obviously having a big recruiting poll, I think that's what makes this a recipe for success.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_02]: and not necessarily needing just the decades along coaching experience that somebody like a brunt vinnables has and adds to the staff.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_03]: I am feeling optimistic mainly because Chelsea haven't lost to Arsenal yet today and uh when you look toward Monday night in Vienna and Miami, you're going to get after it in Miami.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_03]: Jason Taylor is a guy that spent a couple years at St. Thomas Aquinas, and he is the best edge room in the country, basically.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_03]: Now, a lot of that due to his coaching, a lot of that due to resources and things that Miami can do to bring in some of the best guys, and it's a problem that Joe John had that the guys
- 13:18[SPEAKER_03]: frankly candidly he had he never had a chance to coach an elite tight-end room and is that cuz he couldn't recruit the guys is that cuz they didn't have enough of the percentage of the NIL pie toward tight-ends whatever it everybody ultimately the coach of the room has to wear it I have to imagine that when you look at Jason Whitten he probably was like
- 13:38[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, if I'm going to sign on, you're going to equip me to give you guys a Titan room that you want.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_03]: I would have to assume that was part of it, and he is not officially an outspoken home yet, but basically everyone, but Oklahoma has announced it off and running.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_03]: So, should be fun, excited to see.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_03]: I had this thought just in passing, lastly on this before move on.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_03]: What do you guys think a guy like Ben Arbuckle who when he took the Oklahoma job was 29 turn 30 a guy that we've talked about a Texas kid, a West Texas kid all that stuff do you think if we went to Ben Arbuckle 10 years and he goes like hey dog in 10 years You're gonna be heading up a staff with Demarco Murray and Jason with and he'd be like what is happening what happened in my life what there
- 14:20[SPEAKER_03]: I'm over them on the organizational blow chart.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_03]: What's going on there?
- 14:24[SPEAKER_03]: I think that that's kind of fair.
- 14:25[SPEAKER_03]: I can't wait to talk to Ben Arbock.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to be like, what was your reaction when you found out that you'd be coached?
- 14:31[SPEAKER_00]: Ryan, you mentioned the NIL kitty for tight ins.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_00]: Brent Venables, as we all know last year, donated back to the university for the NIL purposes $1 million.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_00]: Somebody, I'm trying to think, was named Jason Whitton, I believe it was $82 million in NFL earnings.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_00]: Is he allowed by rule, by law, by NCA standards to donate to the OU's NCA, or NIL, tied end kitty, $82 million is what he made as a player.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_00]: And that doesn't include endorsements.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: I don't even know if that's legal.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_00]: When you go.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I have wondered, well, nothing is illegal anymore.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_03]: It seems because it's okay.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_03]: I have to, is a job description of some of these coaches, like, as you have front offices that are doing more and more the scouting work.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_03]: when you get to like portal season is it almost like an athletic director needs to be able to fundraise just like a tight-end's coach need to be able to fundraise with some donors to get I don't know it's weird maybe that's total ass nine January 14th that maybe it's something that's the future of the sport I don't know we will see but Oklahoma themselves not done the transfer portal does not officially close until Friday
- 15:45[SPEAKER_03]: that is for players entering the portal keep in mind that doesn't mean that Oklahoma has to have everybody announced by Friday and all that stuff you get a 24 hour lag time so technically by the time we close down a shop had his pillow on Saturday they should be no shock departures can still make a decision since we last talked
- 16:02[SPEAKER_03]: Oklahoma has three or four transfer portal additions depending on how technically we want to be.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_03]: The three for sure former Georgia Tech opted to live in Payton, Joseph, former Washington State, Lighter, Silver, McKinsey, all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all-all
- 16:25[SPEAKER_03]: Don't call it Turner Field to those people.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_03]: Well, guess what?
- 16:29[SPEAKER_03]: It's Turner Field and me, damn it.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_03]: Turner Field right there.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_03]: Um, also PJ at a boy spent approximately 122nds in the portal.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_03]: And then he's out of the portal.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know what the ruling is on PJ.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_03]: Does he count in OU's portal rankings?
- 16:47[SPEAKER_03]: Like David Stone kind of did.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_03]: does he not I think we have all have a pretty good breakdown of what PJ at a boy can bring to the Oklahoma sooners it isn't you know I think we got we saw guys of course I go to you here with Alex way in summer and signing with USC that was Oklahoma's number one D.T.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_03]: Torgette will see
- 17:06[SPEAKER_03]: what our guy, Kenny from ETSA, if he ends up filling out and moving inside, kind of General Olu, or if he stays outside.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_03]: But they need another guy and getting a guy that is well traveled in Bishop Thomas, but one that enjoyed it break out your last year.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_03]: He's just adding to your death rotation.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_03]: I think this is going to be a just fine thing to give some of those young guys time to come along, whether it's this year or next year.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think it's huge just for the depth more than anything having guys like David Stone and Jaden Jackson back assuming that our healthy those are going to be The two guys on the interior of the defensive line and oh, you should feel really good about that two of the best offensive linemen not only in the SEC, but nationally their fantastic players.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_02]: But having someone to kind of overtake a lot of a snaps that Marcus Strong likely would have gotten this year if he didn't transfer out I think that's big getting somebody that's proven even though at a smaller level like Bishop Thomas I think that's big probably seeing more of a role from Nigel Smith this year Presumably his his role on this defensive line will increase I still think they could add probably one more depth piece to the inside of the defensive line assuming Osalwa
- 18:14[SPEAKER_02]: does stay on the outside, I think getting one more tackle would be a good thing, but overall that's just, that's a huge pickup just adding to the depth, kind of taking what Marcus strong would have brought to the D-line in 26.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you got Trent Wilson there hanging out to another one of those young pieces as well.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_03]: And not quite can be able to add Devon Robertson, one of the two commits the Oklahoma Longside Live Acretaving App is picked up at the Navy All-American Game, Toy Toy 7 recruits.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_03]: We'll talk about them here in a second, but wouldn't mind that as well.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_03]: I saw some...
- 18:46[SPEAKER_03]: very few reaction to the Washington State receiver edition.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_03]: I would just say this guys, Oklahoma didn't grab Cam Coleman, but Troll Harris and Parker Livingstone Stone, Stone will find out officially.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_03]: Neither of those guys came super cheap and when your entire 2024 class is gone,
- 19:07[SPEAKER_03]: You're gonna need bodies and getting a 6-1 guy who had one year of overlap with Benar Buckle and John material.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_03]: Is that the worst thing in the world?
- 19:14[SPEAKER_03]: Am I telling you it's gonna contribute next year?
- 19:16[SPEAKER_03]: No, I think he also had a leg injury of some sort, so maybe that factored into the lack of production.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_03]: He did a good bowl game, but get that going and then Avery.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_03]: Something that we know Oklahoma needed to do is just continue to add debt.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_03]: Getting a guy like Peyton Joseph seems as good as anything because it's a forestar recruit and we're allowed to say that because he was just a true freshman a year ago that doesn't mean like oh my god five years ago he was a forestar recruit.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_03]: Things like that.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_03]: Played in just five games, only one on the offensive was like four snaps but one of those guys with three years of eligibility left who could technically register at this year if he needed to.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_03]: to just kind of rebuild that depth on the interior and give Bill BeanBoom more guy.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_03]: This seems like everything you could ask for out of like a depth portal ad when you're rebuilding that secondary of the offensive line.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_01]: They really needed to build up the depth there.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_01]: And I think we talked about this last week, but you think about where they would have been depth wise this season, even with the offensive line, not being as great as they would have hoped.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_01]: But at the same time,
- 20:22[SPEAKER_01]: that decide in all kinds of guys in different positions.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_01]: So I think he's a guy that I wouldn't certainly project him among that starting group, but I think he's got a chance to be a fairly significant contributor at some point if they need him and judging by the way that things have gone the last couple years, they're going to need as much depth as they can get up there.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_01]: So I think it was a solid pickup for Bill Beaton Bow's group.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_03]: something that I think it might have been the Tennessee game that Brent was joking with my question about hey Eddie Pierloey and Mike Sucy and Ryan Fochie those guys loud environment two thumbs up right but this will be a that I think they they had the heavy hairs as far as the big ad
- 21:08[SPEAKER_03]: in an American Harris that that's what you want to call it that and then I think it's just a retain your guys up front that we're going to start and you're betting on development which I think that that is something that's perfectly fine to do when you're talking about a couple of true freshman, a red shirt freshman and a sinner who while he only has one year left he did not go through spring ball.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_03]: He got there in the summer and jake micro a post spring portal.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_03]: Those are the guys I'm willing to like give it a year and see what kind of improvement you get
- 21:38[SPEAKER_00]: what's suddenly going to be better here in year four or something like that when we get to the conversation like if returning debt good debt I think returning production the offensive line is good returning production this offseason yeah i agree i think they got um... took them a couple of years has seen but that feel like they got the the core of that group infosucy info j and any peer lewe they got that core together um... three guys that are going to start together play together for three four years
- 22:05[SPEAKER_00]: That's huge for beaten bow in terms of development now what comes behind that depth.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_00]: You got to find that depth and unfortunately for Oklahoma and 2026 a lot of those pieces that could have been developed as really valuable.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, fill us in slide over step in for a few games that that kind of depth.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_00]: that all that all went out the transfer portal almost all of it did six seven seven offensive line then left so yeah that's that's too bad and from there yeah there you go he's from there he's going to have to start over again beating bow is in terms of developing young guys or finding identifying guys in the transfer portal to who can come in and you know get a few snaps here and there get a few games here and there you know like Michael did like but Clinko did
- 22:54[SPEAKER_00]: If you're able to weather that, you've got, you know, a small class coming in, 2026, and some absolute monsters coming in in 2027, then maybe you can start to sustain kind of what they started the back half of this year.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, then from there, it's just a matter of cards, I know that you kind of tallied the what else does Oklahoma still need to add.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_03]: A lot of that going to be contingent on like, at linebacker, the expectation, there's an offer in front of Pipp Lewis, that the expectations from design will see if they officially get that signed announced, all that stuff.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_03]: We're obviously still waiting on anything official either way from own a hynarchy, satania, same boat, as Pipp Lewis, it sounds like it.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_03]: for the sake of numbers, satanias in the boat, kip Lewis is in the boat.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_03]: When you look down at your audience, maybe another interior defensive guy, we're else did you kind of look at and go, hey, might be an upper here, might be an upper there, because we're firmly into the depth portion of transfer portal happenings.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, 100% I think in addition to Hayden Hansen and Rocky Bears getting another Titan would be big.
- 24:03[SPEAKER_02]: Just looking at what they're going to return.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_02]: It's not much.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_02]: You got Kade McIntyre back.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_02]: You have two incoming freshmen, both of whom are supposed to be good players, but no college experience.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_02]: I think getting a third guy maybe behind Hansen and Bears, I think that could be big for the Titan group.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_02]: which as we touched on is going to look so much different this year.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that's one need.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_02]: I think linebacker talking about, let's say they get one of those guys, Heinekhi or Louis back.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_02]: I still think they need one more guy losing Samy on the seagull, Kip, Luke, Kobe McKenzie excuse me, Kendall Daniels playing that cheetah spot.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_02]: He's not going to be there.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_02]: I think just getting one more linebacker would really help solidify that.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously you guys, you have guys like James Nesta, Marcus James, Taylor Heim,
- 24:47[SPEAKER_02]: Guys who have looked good on special teams, slash reserve roles, but can you really trust full production in bigger roles at this point?
- 24:56[SPEAKER_02]: Who knows?
- 24:56[SPEAKER_02]: So I think getting one more linebackers big, maybe another cornerback, which obviously a depth piece there, because Portland Gillaries, not giving up his spot, Eli Bowen's not giving up his spot, but getting one more guy in the second area, I don't think that would hurt either.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_03]: It'll be, in the Titan room, it's a tale to all the time.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_03]: Who's the third man?
- 25:15[SPEAKER_03]: That is what everyone has always been asking themselves, and I would suggest not signing Hulk Hogan.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know how that would go.
- 25:22[SPEAKER_03]: As we see, like we said, some depth stuff, I'm not expecting massive, massive splashes, just because that's the nature of the portal, things like that.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_03]: What do you think that we've learned?
- 25:34[SPEAKER_03]: As you've set back and watched Jim Naggi at his front office staff get their first real go at it,
- 25:41[SPEAKER_03]: the options are limited, what do you feel like you know better about this front office staff and kind of how Oklahoma will be shaping itself up roster-wise over the next couple years now that we've got to see Jim nagging crew in action.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_01]: I think clearly the priorities are a little bit shifted there.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_01]: We've seen them have some some more success with guys who have been at the major college level.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's not just a lot of picking from, you know, Kennesaw State and Georgia State and teams like that, even though there's certainly some of it with, you know, we talked about with Colorado State,
- 26:19[SPEAKER_01]: Bishop Thomas a guy who had started off at Colorado or Florida state, excuse me, in Colorado before one and up at Georgia State.
- 26:29[SPEAKER_01]: So just a little bit different.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_01]: Look at I think it's, you know, as much about learning what Jim Nagy's
- 26:37[SPEAKER_01]: thoughts and priorities are as just seeing him go through a full evaluation process and where it doesn't have to be so rushed and that's something that he talked about when he was hired is
- 26:51[SPEAKER_01]: the fact that they were going to evaluate guys sort of as the season went on where you're not just caught flat-footed and it's not just hey this guy's going in the portal let's take a look at film let's you know pull all the information that we have on this guy it's hey this guy's in the portal bring up what we've got and we can you know be ready and I think that that's the biggest thing is being able to to jump on these things because so often
- 27:20[SPEAKER_01]: when you're the big program who jumps quickly on a guy, you can make a bigger impact than if it takes some time and you're the fifth or sixth program to reach out to those guys.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's the biggest thing we've seen from this cycle.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_03]: John and I think going to build on that.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_03]: We've seen too.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_03]: It's not just the preparation.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_03]: It's the plan of attack because we saw immediately what were the first couple of names.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_03]: What did Oklahoma really, really need?
- 27:46[SPEAKER_03]: They needed to tie in.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_03]: When they're top targets, Hayden Hanson, whether that was your top target or not.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_03]: Oklahoma got him in, got him signed.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_03]: He was announced Sunday.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_03]: You didn't get into a big long, drawn out bidding war with all ACC type guy and trial Harris.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_03]: That was immediate.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_03]: He's here.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_03]: He takes one visit.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_03]: He's in.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_03]: It was a heads up.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, you Indiana with like Parker Livingstone, but it's he's here.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_03]: He's in that gets wrapped up pretty quickly.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's not just the preparation, but execution as opposed to like last portal where it was kind of like, well, they're bringing in this guy, now they're bringing in this guy.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't really felt like it was a little bit all over the map as opposed to streamlined like we've seen.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, what it felt like this year, okay, you've got one portal.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_00]: and it's two weeks and it felt like Oklahoma approached that maybe I'm oversimplifying again that's just what I do I have a very simple brain.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_00]: I felt like Oklahoma spent the first week saying these are the guys these are the positions
- 28:42[SPEAKER_00]: that we've identified that we absolutely need.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_00]: These are the guys we have to go after.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_00]: This is the money where we have available to spend on that position or in this group or whatever it is.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_00]: And if I like week two has been more of a, hey, we need some depth pieces.
- 28:59[SPEAKER_00]: We need some pieces of, we need some guys who want to be here.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_00]: We need some guys who might not have a huge NIL demand, you know, come in here, pounding their fist on the table with their agent next to them saying,
- 29:12[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe that maybe some of that's going on but it just feels like the first week was spent hitting the highlights
- 29:18[SPEAKER_03]: bringing in the big guns and the second week has has been spent so far uh... kind of fill it in the cracks front kind of finding those uh... death pieces in those uh... develop mental pieces that can that can help out later down the line and on paper Carson i'd like to be the given pool or that that given take up we need to do it wide receiver let's go get an all-ecc guy we need to do it line backer let's target co-solving and then
- 29:43[SPEAKER_03]: It's still like, and Britman will see it's a close that deal.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_03]: Like, it's not just the front office Britman will say, hey, we need some depth at defensive end, maybe defensive tackle.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_03]: Well, we've got this guy at UTSA who a lot of people like, let's take an upside swing on this and he's got some eligibility.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_03]: Let's say, we need some depth on the interior, don't have to be immediate.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_03]: Georgia Tech's got a guy that just entered the, like, I liked the balance they had of like, where do we need an established guy versus where can we take our swings?
- 30:11[SPEAKER_03]: Let the evaluation side of the front office really shine.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no, it really is a good balance.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like we talked so much last year about what are these receivers from FCS schools gonna do in Norman Oklahoma playing against SEC opponents?
- 30:26[SPEAKER_02]: And there were flashes for sure.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, Giovanni Gibson came on late in the season, had some really big grabs.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_02]: Kianta's Lewis early in the year had some really good games, but you can feel a little bit more confident about players like Trell Harris, who have competed in the ACC.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_02]: Parker Livingstone, who has played in the
- 30:43[SPEAKER_02]: SEC played against Oklahoma's outstanding defense for that matter and then you look at some of those death pieces who have been good at group of five level stuff like that.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's just a really good balance of finding out where they need to allocate the money, where they can maybe save a little bit and add production from.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe it's a little bit of a risk, because okay, what's the juke from UTSA or Georgia State gonna look like?
- 31:09[SPEAKER_02]: But I feel like they've done a good job, not necessarily the flashy, oh, we got canned comb and that Texas is probably doing victory laps around right now.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_02]: But finding quality players proven at this level and then also getting depth, I feel like the approach has been really sound, and maybe that just comes with another year of having that front office staff.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's been that fun to watch and we'll continue to monitor and as any new stuff comes down, you know the place to be Okomisoners on si.com.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_03]: We got it all for you.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_03]: We still got our big portal tracker that is it's my baby.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_03]: I'm all over it.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_03]: We're all over is a crew, but I'm the one that ultimately is like, wait, did I put that in there?
- 31:47[SPEAKER_03]: Just riding up some of the exits if anyone cares.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_03]: Kindle Dolby, part of the crew that's had to do it Mississippi State along with Isaiah Ochridint, and Zion Raggins, as far as that goes.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_03]: So the other guys, Juvantae Barnes, Kentucky, you got Taylor Tatum at Michigan, and then technically Hollywood's mothers at Texas means Oklahoma face three, four more running backs.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_03]: Chin up to Chinchry Williams is really good to see him land at Georgia.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_03]: was hoping that he got like a really good landing spot because we know if he's healthy he's great.
- 32:15[SPEAKER_03]: I think that was probably some of the consideration.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_03]: I also wonder too.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_03]: I'd love me to talk to Ginger one more time.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_03]: When Trace Ford came in he talked about at a certain point once you hit so many injuries.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_03]: When he walks out to the practice field and still water he just remembered I went down there and I went down there that he just needed a little bit of a refresh and I think that he got that Oklahoma.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_03]: I wonder how much of it for Ginger is like
- 32:36[SPEAKER_03]: huge with that we'll see say me'll see go who you mentioned cars need hit the portal he landed at ucla i've tried to see some of the others uh... if there's anything big cars in kint the pit and you had kating homes good of Minnesota so pretty good landing spots Kobe to northwestern sub
- 32:53[SPEAKER_03]: We will see we'll have plenty of crossover with a bunch of former suitors whether it be that Michigan game Like we said all the way to Georgia Kentucky Mississippi state A little bit of Texas with some love there between OU and Parker Livingstone some good stuff there, and it's not just the portal class Oh go ahead of who's sorry.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, it'll be interesting to see those guys with six or seven guys seven right guys that are gonna play against OU in 2026.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_00]: That'll be fun
- 33:16[SPEAKER_00]: But the one that stands out to me as long as we're talking about departures is Sammy almost ego and that surprised me when it happened, right?
- 33:24[SPEAKER_00]: The news came out and it was like, huh, really, okay.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_00]: They bring in Cole Sullivan and a couple not long after you get Sammy almost ego in the transfer portal and he posted this couple of days ago on his Twitter page.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_00]: He says, dear Oklahoma, I say this with a very heavy heart.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_00]: And I am truly sad to see that our time together came to an abrupt end.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_00]: I never thought there would be a day where I would have to leave this wonderful university reiterate, I would have to leave this wonderful university, but times and college football has changed.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_00]: I'm thankful for all you've done for me, blah, blah, blah.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_00]: That says a mouthful, doesn't it?
- 34:03[SPEAKER_00]: That says an absolute mouthful that a player who
- 34:08[SPEAKER_00]: had developed here, you know, started his, his adult life here, became a man, so to speak.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_00]: He said that in his, in his suite, a guy who loved it here, a guy who was on the depth chart and was climbing and was getting more and more and more reps, I've said and he asked, he says he has to leave and he's heartbroken about it.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_00]: That, I think that flew into the radar this week.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_00]: That really, really says some pulls back to Curtin and reveals some kind of raw nerves about the transfer portal and NIL and Revenue Sharing.
- 34:42[SPEAKER_00]: And what the way coaches approach these things now.
- 34:46[SPEAKER_00]: I'd like to know more about the story of that, the backstory from Sammy.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_03]: I think it could just be as simple as this.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_03]: Oklahoma we know in general doesn't love red shirt and tonic guys like if you can come in you can play on special teams And I think that there's probably a certain extent at Oklahoma.
- 35:01[SPEAKER_03]: They're like the guys We were curtain don't need to be five-year guys to produce and stuff like that And I think you saw with Giovanni Gibson once Oklahoma landed not just Trail but also Parker you go hey man I've got one more year and approved whoever anyone
- 35:18[SPEAKER_03]: that I can cut at this level and to kind of start my, where am I going to start on the ladder?
- 35:23[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to have to go to UFL.
- 35:24[SPEAKER_03]: Am I going to be able to be a six seventh round, you know, invite guy.
- 35:29[SPEAKER_03]: Am I going to be a third round or to be able to really, really try and and bat it like it matters where you start in that pecking order in the football side of things.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_03]: And I wonder for Sammy, if that's like similar thing, he's looking around to go and
- 35:47[SPEAKER_03]: and Reggie Powers has been awesome.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_03]: Well, now I'm the fourth guy, maybe on the interior, and I've got one year left, and if I want to just continue to put film out there, it might not be at the spot exactly that I want it to be, but I can go and play all the time at UCLA and show off all my skill set as opposed to having to be, because it certainly didn't sound like a,
- 36:10[SPEAKER_03]: Texas Parker Livingston type situation there, but that's one of it.
- 36:17[SPEAKER_03]: We've talked about before guys the effect on high schoolers and not the five star kids, but maybe some of the time in the rough three star guys do they start
- 36:25[SPEAKER_03]: farther down the football ladder, cause some schools are less willing to take a shot on them when they can say, hang, go get a line back right of the portal.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_03]: I think that for guys entering their final year of eligibility, it's very, very delicate in a similar way because it's the old coach to think, right?
- 36:41[SPEAKER_03]: It's my job to stock this roster full of guys to take your job.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_03]: It's your job to improve and get better and keep those guys behind you.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_03]: I just think that it's harder to do that now.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_03]: No one, you've only got one more year left
- 36:54[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_03]: It's, uh, I think it's just part of it.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_03]: So what we're seeing, you know, I mean that you see a lot of veterans hitting the port with one year left.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_03]: I think just looking for playing time to do the last little bit of final touches on their NFL resume.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_03]: But we will see, and I think Sam is going to play a ton at UCLA and hopefully him in Bob Chesney can get that thing going.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_03]: But it'll be interesting to see as far as that goes.
- 37:17[SPEAKER_03]: for sure.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_03]: We mentioned not just the portal side of it, but Tavenep's and David Robertson, shout out to the Navy All-American game on Saturday, made us wait like two commercial breaks and then boom, boom, oh, you commit, oh, you commit cars, I know that when Tavenep's decommitted from Texas a long time ago, that's when we really started to throttle some stuff up behind the scenes, but two more additions to the class that's already out in front, number one type class.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_03]: It feels like, man, they keep adding.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_03]: If you get like the, you know, marquee quarterback kind of guy that you need to finish first or anything like that, but feels like Oklahoma's really laying the foundation for a bounce back class at least in the ratings in a huge way.
- 38:00[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they absolutely are.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, they're still 11 months until early signing day.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_02]: So I mean, a lot can change, but it's hard to imagine this class falls too far off from where it's currently at.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_02]: And it might not be number one players will surely decommet that just happens in recruiting.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_02]: But to be number one at this point to have this much offensive line talent, that's what really sticks out.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_02]: How good the offensive line commits are and then getting edge rushers like the guys that got more recently.
- 38:28[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, they really are building this building a foundation to be this quote hard to kill team that they brand themselves on being just really good work from the recruiting team, the scouting team.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_02]: It's just really impressive to see the foundation they're laying after a good class in 26.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_02]: I think right now it's 14th or 15th and the two four seven rankings.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_02]: But to be number one, to be ahead of these teams that probably have more money than OU like your Texas, your Texas A&M, your Texas Tech, to be out recruiting those teams says a lot about what this staff is doing.
- 39:06[SPEAKER_03]: It's a very, very, we've said it over and over again, a fantastic start as things go for that.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_03]: And the good news is for jokes to glean slash, whoever jokes at the answer placement is gonna be.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_03]: It looks like football has recovered from its wobble in 2024, head in the right direction.
- 39:28[SPEAKER_03]: You're always gonna have to pay attention to football, but I don't think you're gonna have to go, oh my gosh, we need to fix this, this, this, and this, it's about fine tuning this machine and getting it going.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_03]: That's good news.
- 39:40[SPEAKER_03]: Bad news is the problem you're going to inherit for whoever Oklahoma's new athletic director is Whenever that comes out I would imagine sooner rather than later this time of years kind of what we had all predicted if there's no football issues would Would fit the timeline of probably what Oklahoma wants to do.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_03]: They're going to have to immediately start getting to work on the grand quagmire that his What happens at the Lloyd Noble Center Carson you were there last night
- 40:06[SPEAKER_03]: it was brutal.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_03]: We're not going to go blow by blow on that.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_03]: We also don't have to dive into every single problem that exists with Oklahoma basketball.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_03]: We did that a lot last year before they kind of pulled out of the tailspin of is the coach.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_03]: The issue is the, uh, and I also support the issue is the fan support.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_03]: What are we, uh, it's, it's a big circle that we can go
- 40:36[SPEAKER_03]: Otherwise, the Porter Moser era is probably done and the fans voted with their pocket book class.
- 40:42[SPEAKER_03]: I know there was some other circumstances, students not back in, thunderstorms on the same night.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_03]: That's tough.
- 40:47[SPEAKER_03]: We've seen fine-ish crowds before with similar circumstances.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_03]: I think there's a lot of OU fans last night that basically said, I saw the two road games.
- 40:56[SPEAKER_03]: I've seen this exact start to SEC play or big 12 play before, and no thank you.
- 41:01[SPEAKER_03]: I will no longer be putting my ticket revenue behind Porter Moser and this whole experience at the Lenovo Center.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's a rough time.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_02]: You mentioned those road losses to Mississippi State NANNM.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_02]: I admittedly was it in full panic mode after those losses just seeing that Mississippi State's Josh Hubbard is a phenomenal player, and he went off for 30.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_02]: That's just tough.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_02]: I felt like we used defense did have some upside the offense really struggled in the NANM.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_02]: That's a team that has overperformed for maybe what a lot of people thought this year.
- 41:33[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, you're looking at one into not great.
- 41:35[SPEAKER_02]: Not panic mode, and then last night, losing by 17, those 17 points don't tell the story.
- 41:42[SPEAKER_02]: That game could have Florida could have picked their score on that one.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, you got out score to 60 to 22 in the paint.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_02]: That's almost unheard of in high-level college basketball.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_02]: You just don't really see that very often.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_02]: Three losses in a row, one and three in SCC play.
- 41:57[SPEAKER_02]: And things have got to change quickly.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_02]: But I think you do have to look at last year there was a four game losing streak to open conference play in the middle of conference play.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_02]: There was a five game losing streak.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_02]: So that's not to say that things can't turn around, but it's really discouraging with how much talent this team has.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it was a fantastic portal class that oh you got, it felt like they really did make an effort to put a winning product on the floor at the Lloyd Noble Center.
- 42:23[SPEAKER_02]: And you're just not seeing that right now.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_02]: There were some worrisome signs against hack teams like Mississippi Valley State, Alcorn State.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_02]: Some really not good opponents, and you're seeing all of those things, whether that's front court struggles, offensive struggles.
- 42:38[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of just inconsistency with this team has really come to light against good opponents.
- 42:45[SPEAKER_02]: And they've got to get that turned around quickly.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_02]: There are no bad teams opposed to last year when
- 42:50[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, you see LSU South Carolina on the schedule.
- 42:53[SPEAKER_02]: You can probably chop those up to a win, even if you're not playing your best ball.
- 42:57[SPEAKER_02]: There really isn't a freebie this year, and then Alabama coming in on Saturday.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_02]: Um, a lot's got to change in just a few days before that one.
- 43:05[SPEAKER_03]: A-bra, this is a spot where anyone that's covered Oklahoma long enough knows that the Oklahoma basketball file, it's like complicated.
- 43:14[SPEAKER_03]: There's a lot of strings of this and that and the other and all that.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_03]: But I think that there's a lot of people and I think personally justifiably so they're looking at and going, well, I may not know how to fix all you basketball, but I can tell you one thing.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_03]: Porter Moser doesn't know how to fix so you basketball.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_03]: And while I don't have a great answer of who might be able to fix it or whatever, I can for sure say it's not going anywhere and I think his is of course kind of touched on the big frustration is
- 43:43[SPEAKER_03]: Last year you get Jeremiah Fears, who kind of falls into your lap because of reclassification, you get an all-time bad bubble that allows you to not have, did you have a billion bid dealers the year before, yeah, so maybe you got it back, but like Carson was saying, you get a little bit more NIL backing, you get some recognized guys sign on the dotted line and it looks worse, so this is his worst team since year two, it feels like when that team was nowhere near anything.
- 44:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it really is and, you know, the fact that they're not getting very much at all from their bench right now outside of maybe the one silver lining last night was
- 44:31[SPEAKER_01]: outscored his first four games easily, uh, it was the one silver lining, but really outside of that, not getting a lot dating foresight, the struggled, uh, you know, some of those other guys Jade on Jones hadn't scored much, and, uh, that's tough when you're thinking about the SEC.
- 44:49[SPEAKER_01]: And my mind last night,
- 44:51[SPEAKER_01]: wasn't the, you know, throw up the alarm thing.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_01]: Florida is a really, really good team.
- 44:56[SPEAKER_01]: The best rebounding team in the country.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_01]: We saw that, you know, that led to a lot of the, the point productions, the second chance we knew that that would be big.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_01]: In my mind, it's just the consistency that we haven't seen from this team.
- 45:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 45:11[SPEAKER_01]: They played a tough schedule with Gonzaga in Nebraska who turns out's pretty dang good They're and we're able to bounce back from those games, but Like I think it was Carson said we saw some troubling signs in some of those non-conference games where they should have just ran away and Beat those teams by 40.
- 45:30[SPEAKER_01]: They were unable to do that the Arizona state game things like that and It's just gonna be really tough
- 45:37[SPEAKER_01]: for this program to bounce back.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_01]: But like you said, you know, what is the answer?
- 45:42[SPEAKER_01]: Who can come in and fix it?
- 45:44[SPEAKER_01]: There are some fundamental problems with the Oklahoma basketball right now from the arena side, from the fan support side and things like that that are just really tough to overcome.
- 45:57[SPEAKER_01]: But certainly seems more and more like Porter Moser isn't the answer there.
- 46:03[SPEAKER_00]: So, quick.
- 46:05[SPEAKER_00]: I'll preface by saying this.
- 46:06[SPEAKER_00]: You guys know I haven't intimately covered OU basketball, but certainly I've watched all their games over the years.
- 46:15[SPEAKER_00]: I've followed it closely.
- 46:17[SPEAKER_00]: I've interviewed Porter and several assisted coaches, players, whatever it is, administrators.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_00]: So I know just a little bit about oh you basketball and guys over the last four years it has been hate to say this we truly do hate to say this because everybody I know everybody on this in this video likes him I know everybody who meets Porter Moser likes him enjoys being around him but the common thread here because he has rebuilt the roster four times
- 46:49[SPEAKER_00]: Four times he has had to rebuild completely rebuild the roster.
- 46:52[SPEAKER_00]: The common thread unfortunately is Porter Moser, and does that come down to recruiting?
- 46:58[SPEAKER_00]: Does it come down to evaluating?
- 47:00[SPEAKER_00]: Does it come down to actual coaching and practice?
- 47:03[SPEAKER_00]: Does it come down to in-game coaching and adjustments and strategies and things like that?
- 47:08[SPEAKER_00]: Does it come down to like the halftime speech, right?
- 47:10[SPEAKER_00]: Or the pre-game inspiration, all that stuff?
- 47:13[SPEAKER_00]: Whatever it is, all those things together, it's just not working.
- 47:17[SPEAKER_00]: So that's again, I'm going to simplify it and just say that's kind of where Oklahoma basketball has fallen in the fans as you said at the beginning, the fans have spoken.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think you kind of nailed it.
- 47:28[SPEAKER_02]: It's hard to pinpoint what exactly it is, but he is the common denominator of this team just kind of being painfully mediocre.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_02]: I think he did buy himself another year last year with how they finished SEC play.
- 47:40[SPEAKER_02]: It felt like things were finally like, okay, this is going to be a competitive program in the SEC.
- 47:46[SPEAKER_02]: They get the win against Ole Miss to start this year.
- 47:49[SPEAKER_02]: Gonzaga, Nebraska, those losses age well, wait, you go after that SEC opener, like, okay, this team might actually be pretty decent competing for, I don't know, a six, seven, eight seed in the NCAA tournament.
- 48:01[SPEAKER_02]: To now, like, okay, I'm not sure this team deserves it than I tee bit.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_02]: So it's, it's got to be frustrating in life.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_02]: You said, Porter Moser is fantastic with us.
- 48:13[SPEAKER_02]: So we certainly would miss him if he's no longer the coach next
- 48:18[SPEAKER_02]: great guy, great leader for the program, but just something whether that's motivation, recruiting, in-game adjustments, is not working, and it does seem like, unless things get turned around really quickly that this era of OU basketball ball might be coming to an end.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_03]: And it's a, it's an everybody basketball that like, it's almost like a false start, because they were not one of the early adopters for NIL and things like that, and few had gone back,
- 48:44[SPEAKER_03]: 10 years ago, I think simply saying like hey they're just hoping for a 678 seed would be like well that's not kind of the historically where it's been if they won the national championship no but uh everyone around here knows all the stuff about you know uh the list of teams with tournament wins amongst who has not won a national title it's like oh you and Purdue basically that are produced recently overtaken them I believe if I remember correctly stuff like that
- 49:09[SPEAKER_03]: But to simply take this long to get to the point where you thought this was going to be a team that shouldn't have to ride the bubble and now not only are they riding the bubble with their now Meaning to do work.
- 49:19[SPEAKER_03]: I think it just becomes that I know like I work with Tyler Neil at the franchise very very passionate obviously has a ton more blood and sweat equity as a guy that's worn the uniform all that stuff.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_03]: And I know that he was personally very frustrated by the
- 49:31[SPEAKER_03]: lack of fans for seven.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_03]: It's like Porter's done a really good job with the students.
- 49:35[SPEAKER_03]: The students have come out a lot more than whatever member under law and things like that.
- 49:39[SPEAKER_03]: Porter's had moments early where I remember back going to year two and it was the Alabama game, number two Alabama coming in and it's like, oh my gosh, that was huge and you get that and then they get a rock and crowd for bailer.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_03]: And then they lose because they can't defensive rebound and they can't hit a shot in the last four minutes and then you go and you watch the same in game on the road and you go what can they not do they can't pull out a defensive rebound and they can't score in the last three and a half minutes three years later and I just think that you've reached the point where.
- 50:10[SPEAKER_03]: Coming up out of the way back to the beginning.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_03]: I begrudged no fan who looks around and goes I'm not even go to thunder spurs, but I would rather sit at home and watch that on my couch I'd rather link up it Pick your sports bar and watch that game and just have Oklahoma on the other screen because I think there's a lot of OU fans They're like I It there may not be an answer there may not be someone that can walk through that door and solve it, but again It just gets back to I know a hundred percent that this guy came and I think that's kind of where everybody is
- 50:39[SPEAKER_00]: Ryan, you think we should spend 15 minutes talking about the thunder on this podcast instead of all you basketball?
- 50:45[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I think it might be cheerier because the pivot I have written down here for one program that the season looks maybe dead, the other one not dead, but it is bleeding right now, a little bit, that's the sooner women they started off this big, it's a four game stretch that's really an eight game stretch with
- 51:02[SPEAKER_03]: But the four games all against top 15, top 20 opponents, depending on which week of the polls you get, did not start very well last Thursday, Sooner's fall to Ole Miss and a game that simply put, they got punched in the mouth early and while they clawed and worked their way back in, it felt like they never truly recovered from that.
- 51:18[SPEAKER_03]: So the Genie Ronchek talked about in a pretty intense post game press conference.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_03]: They then took that on the road to a Kentucky team that had also fallen mid-week to Alabama.
- 51:29[SPEAKER_03]: And the start was much better, ABER, but they got to the end of the game, couldn't execute in the last three minutes, and I think it's probably a good thing that their mid-week, quote unquote, buy from the SEC, is coming in because LSU who had wobbled, got a big one over Texas, and that's who's up next on Sunday at Lloyd Noble Center.
- 51:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm not sure if the, oh, you players think it's a much of a good thing right now because I imagine they're getting quite a workout in this week as Jenny Baronshick was certainly fired up after the way that they played over the last couple, but yeah, the offense hasn't been a problem with this team, but it disappeared
- 52:11[SPEAKER_01]: in long stretches and and they really struggle to you know one uh... hit from distance hit what was it just two three pointers uh... the other day one fairly early one fairly late from a lea chavez uh... you know missed uh... miss shots in bunches uh... their late
- 52:29[SPEAKER_01]: Um, you know, just haven't gotten the production that they would like, you know, Sahara Williams struggled from a scoring perspective the other day and, and, you know, Zia van has, has had some moments where she hasn't been the player that, uh, it, she looked like for much of the season.
- 52:53[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, to this point.
- 52:54[SPEAKER_01]: So they certainly have to get some things figured out over this week.
- 52:58[SPEAKER_01]: Because you looked at this for game stretching.
- 52:59[SPEAKER_01]: You knew how big it was was going to be and, you know, we, I think I said on this.
- 53:05[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, if they could go somehow go three and one.
- 53:07[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you feel really, really good about yourself.
- 53:10[SPEAKER_01]: But then when you lose the first two and those were the two sort of easy ones.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_01]: In this stretch and then you, you know, get a LSU team that's, you know, finally starting to figure some things out and then out by the way, you got South Carolina looming beyond that.
- 53:26[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's just a really rough and, you know,
- 53:31[SPEAKER_01]: These aren't, I wouldn't say these are must-win games quite at this point, but they're as close to it as you can get in January in the SEC where you've got at least figure out a way to get one of these to come in up because otherwise your prospects of hosting almost disappear.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, something that we had discussed leading into conference display, Peyton Verholst who was
- 54:01[SPEAKER_03]: what her role is on the offensive into the floor where she's needed.
- 54:04[SPEAKER_03]: That was amplified against Ole Miss when she starts out, it was over 11 and finishes one for 13 or 14 and only gets a two to go.
- 54:16[SPEAKER_03]: She bounces back against Kentucky, but then Sahara Williams says, it feels like Alicia Davis has been pretty good.
- 54:22[SPEAKER_03]: I think that as a true freshman, she's still getting a handle on
- 54:37[SPEAKER_03]: what it means to close in these big-time games that's not balanced out by a big Zion game or something like that to go along with Reagan beers when Chavez is still, I think trying to figure out what it means to close in this conference and close against the balance.
- 54:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and we knew that this would be, you know, not everything was gonna be perfect from Leah Chavez, I mean, heck, we saw our struggles early on the season, the first couple games including that second game against UCLA, but she was able to learn from that, but it's different when you're, it's, you know,
- 55:07[SPEAKER_01]: versus a grind of the SEC schedule and what they face in the physicality that you see in this league and things like that.
- 55:18[SPEAKER_01]: There's no indication that she won't be able to adjust, but she's got to be able to adjust and
- 55:25[SPEAKER_01]: uh... situations because those are things that you're going to face you know not only against uh... the teams that they've got coming up the you know l.a. shoes and south car line is in that stretch the road with vandy and texas back to back but really throughout this lee you're going to face situations like that where teams are going to grind you down and uh... you know like i said there's no indication that alia chavez can't adjust to it but uh... you know she's got to start making those adjustments uh... fairly quickly
- 55:54[SPEAKER_03]: It'll be like we mentioned these two home games and then once February kicks off at Texas at Vandy, boom, boom, those are the big ones and for Oklahoma, the women, it's different stuff we're talking about for the women, not still worried about hosting the first two rounds is like one of the top four seeds, you just need to be one of the top 16 teams of the country.
- 56:15[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think they're going to go over in this stretch, but
- 56:17[SPEAKER_03]: I do think there is a lot of urgency, and I know that Jenny, I asked her about this to start the year.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_03]: We can't look at this all that, but if Oklahoma could have wrestled away, hadn't read a one seed, but maybe one of the top two seeds, you could be looking at your path to trying to make something happen, it could be Norman in the first two rounds, and then one of the two regional sites is in Fort Worth if you're a big believer in the, uh,
- 56:42[SPEAKER_03]: Projections and things like that that is a palm that puts it out there or cream cream for the women's acrylic cream all the CBS Charlie cream.
- 56:50[SPEAKER_03]: I get all confused.
- 56:51[SPEAKER_03]: It's a they've just kind of camped out as the two seed in UCLA's region
- 56:58[SPEAKER_03]: in Sacramento.
- 56:59[SPEAKER_03]: You don't want to go Norman Norman Sacramento and have to fight your way back to Phoenix.
- 57:03[SPEAKER_03]: You'd like to go Norman Fort Worth, and then if you're doing good things work your way over to Phoenix.
- 57:07[SPEAKER_03]: So we shall see this kind of, it feels like the drum beat of last year's season where they kind of dipped, figured it out, and then you saw the Kentucky and the SEC tournament stuff like that.
- 57:16[SPEAKER_03]: So then they ran into the Yukon Buzzsaw, which I don't know if it would have mattered if that was a final four or a sweet, 16 game, we saw what you kind of ended up doing
- 57:27[SPEAKER_03]: see a couple weeks away from really firing up the preseason baseball on softball but we're creeping up softball usually a week or two ahead of baseball uh we will be there before we know it and we'll be in a spring football and then we'll be busy again which should not that we haven't been busy but we'll be extra busy as far is that goes I guess things look out for we mentioned guys that are hanging around staying I do wonder how close Oklahoma's athletic director searches to come into an end other than that have
- 57:56[SPEAKER_03]: That maybe take a little bit of a breath before we close to look on the portal and move forward with everything in the football world.
- 58:03[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know, I was actually just looking down at Twitter and I don't see anything which is a stunning development for our podcast.
- 58:13[SPEAKER_01]: Because usually we get on here and it's just all hell breaks loose, but today.
- 58:19[SPEAKER_01]: It appears like we made it through without that.
- 58:22[SPEAKER_01]: Which, of course, means hearing about three minutes, everything's going to go nuts.
- 58:26[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they just means that instead of being able to, like, at the end of like, hey, wait, this actually happened.
- 58:29[SPEAKER_03]: We can react.
- 58:30[SPEAKER_03]: It just means that I hope that by the time you listen to this podcast, it's not grossly out of date.
- 58:35[SPEAKER_00]: Brady, Brady gets a break today.
- 58:38[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, Brady, his bunker trip was luxurious.
- 58:40[SPEAKER_03]: This go around.
- 58:42[SPEAKER_03]: I do feel bad for our friends at Oregon.
- 58:45[SPEAKER_03]: Dante more planning to announce whether he will or won't enter the NFL draft on Sports Center.
- 58:51[SPEAKER_03]: uh... if you're going on sport center you better not go back to college that would be my thing uh... but you know neither here there not quite had that drama around norman which is a good thing for sure let's let's get moving mainly because i got it again it's gonna make me miserable kick it off in forty five minutes and you guys don't want to be around me when that happens so down to it for this week we'll be back next Wednesday wrapping up the clothes of the portal we'll see if there's any straggling additions because once again don't forget and we actually do have a bit of news
- 59:21[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yes, go for it.
- 59:24[SPEAKER_01]: Former OU star George Cumby is being inducted into the college football hall of fame.
- 59:30[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, nice!
- 59:31[SPEAKER_01]: Not as much with this team, but we got the list of inductees into the college football hall of fame.
- 59:40[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see Kejana Carter from Penn State, one of the additions air and Donald Marvin Harrison,
- 59:47[SPEAKER_01]: Garrison Hearst, Mark Ingram, James Laura Knightis, so some Terrence Newman, and Domacansu, among those guys going in, but George Cumbi, linebacker from 76 to 79, going into the college football hall of fame, yet another Switzerland standout who's going into that institution.
- 1:00:11[SPEAKER_03]: That's big time into the four coaches.
- 1:00:14[SPEAKER_03]: Gary Patterson and Chris Peterson, Oklahoma, has fortunately and unfortunately made many memories and had a one singular nightmare that they would like to forget against that kind of thing.
- 1:00:22[SPEAKER_03]: One of those two coaches has to be blocked on Twitter, so.
- 1:00:25[SPEAKER_03]: Well, Gary is online.
- 1:00:26[SPEAKER_03]: We know this.
- 1:00:28[SPEAKER_03]: Not to, and I think Gary is fine with that.
- 1:00:31[SPEAKER_03]: We Gary knows that Gary is online, so I don't think he's too upset about that.
- 1:00:34[SPEAKER_03]: So, all right, let's close it down here.
- 1:00:36[SPEAKER_03]: We'll be back with you guys next Wednesday.
- 1:00:39[SPEAKER_03]: Per use covered everything.
- 1:00:40[SPEAKER_03]: Big thanks to Carson for all the emotional stress that we put him through, which is just like having to deal with a moment fans who are not having with the basketball program.
- 1:00:48[SPEAKER_03]: We'll get a big thanks to Abraham.
- 1:00:50[SPEAKER_03]: I enjoy that sleep, because we're about to be into women's basketball, soft policies, and a hoop, stay with me.
- 1:00:55[SPEAKER_03]: Go, speak out, okay, please.
- 1:00:56[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you.
- 1:00:57[SPEAKER_03]: We'll say, what's acting guys here on the series on a sci-op next Wednesday, please?
