- 0:01Speaker 1: Joe Legwald is our Broncos insider.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five Pro Football, the insider.
- 0:07Speaker 3: I've covered the league, while Jeff Legwald.
- 0:10Speaker 4: He's the balloon popper. He doesn't blow it up.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:16Speaker 2: i BDW Local sixty eight. Start with the JOm and
- 0:19Speaker 2: with the career Dave Leggy on Altitude Sports Radio ninety
- 0:25Speaker 2: two five.
- 0:28Speaker 1: I've at circa Nate Craig and Andy Lyndall.
- 0:31Speaker 5: Best five o'clock hour in the bit starts with a
- 0:32Speaker 5: visit with Jeff Legwald here on a Friday afternoon. Broncos Cardinals,
- 0:39Speaker 5: like like all amazing things, they sadly must end in
- 0:43Speaker 5: the twenty twenty four preseason, unfortunately must conclude this weekend.
- 0:49Speaker 1: What up, Leggy? How you doing?
- 0:51Speaker 3: I'm good. Take a moment and just suddle yourself. This
- 0:55Speaker 3: is it for the preseason.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Oh, we will miss it just so much.
- 1:00Speaker 5: Jeff, What is what is Sean Payton's plan out of
- 1:04Speaker 5: preseason game number three? And and what are the questions
- 1:09Speaker 5: that he seeks answers in here in this game against Arizona.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Well, Nate, I will tell you he did say today
- 1:17Speaker 3: they're going to have their at least some of their
- 1:22Speaker 3: uh you know meetings, their personnel meetings with the roster
- 1:26Speaker 3: cuts coming tuesday. They're having some of those meetings this afternoon.
- 1:31Speaker 3: So that tells you they're down to, you know, maybe
- 1:33Speaker 3: a handful of spots on the fifty three that that
- 1:37Speaker 3: this game would really impact. And you know a lot
- 1:39Speaker 3: of those positions would be special teams and then depth
- 1:43Speaker 3: you know, depth questions, and then they'll also decide, you know,
- 1:49Speaker 3: kind of what are the positions if they see a
- 1:52Speaker 3: name they like on the wlaver wire where they where
- 1:54Speaker 3: they would actually consider making a claim, And they probably
- 1:58Speaker 3: have a a wish list put together already from their
- 2:02Speaker 3: pro personnel department of these guys are in competitive situations
- 2:07Speaker 3: and might be on the on the waiver wire, and
- 2:10Speaker 3: you know that they would be prepared to claim if
- 2:13Speaker 3: they see them.
- 2:16Speaker 6: Hey, legy Nate and Andy just had their power line tripped.
- 2:20Speaker 6: So I will take this question. We'll see if they
- 2:23Speaker 6: can't get back on by the time you're done answering it.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Do you think the Broncos will keep three quarterbacks?
- 2:31Speaker 3: You know what Spring he said today? I actually asked him,
- 2:34Speaker 3: would you know is that a scenario you would consider,
- 2:37Speaker 3: because they only kept to last year, and there are
- 2:40Speaker 3: an awful lot of people in the league right now
- 2:42Speaker 3: think because of the new game day rules that you
- 2:45Speaker 3: wouldn't have to keep three. But he said they, you know,
- 2:50Speaker 3: His answer was certainly, you know, and that they he
- 2:54Speaker 3: would consider it, and then he likes all three. So
- 2:56Speaker 3: I still think if if they can find a way
- 2:59Speaker 3: to do it and not sort of weaken a depth position,
- 3:05Speaker 3: you know, in some way, I still think they'll they'll
- 3:09Speaker 3: keep three because they do like all three, and they
- 3:13Speaker 3: they think there's value there in those three players.
- 3:17Speaker 5: Talking to Jeff Legwald here on a Friday afternoon, Jeff,
- 3:22Speaker 5: we we lost you momentarily when power was cut to
- 3:24Speaker 5: the entire room. So in the event we're asking you
- 3:27Speaker 5: anything that you already just spoke about in the last
- 3:31Speaker 5: ninety seconds or so, well, everyone's just gonna have to
- 3:34Speaker 5: deal with that. So let's let let's go to this
- 3:36Speaker 5: spot right here. LEGI today Sean Payton, and this really
- 3:40Speaker 5: isn't so much about the game, but Sean Payton talked
- 3:42Speaker 5: about the rebuilding process of this team and how some
- 3:46Speaker 5: of the guys that were a part of sort of
- 3:48Speaker 5: sins of the past are not there anymore, that the
- 3:53Speaker 5: organization and the team in the locker room are are
- 3:56Speaker 5: turning the page. As you have watched this off season
- 4:01Speaker 5: into this camp, through this preseason getting regular ready for
- 4:05Speaker 5: the regular season, Leggy, how much have you observed that
- 4:09Speaker 5: that there really is uh kind of a theme of
- 4:14Speaker 5: facelift of onto the next from what this franchise has
- 4:18Speaker 5: been And how much has that been a goal of
- 4:20Speaker 5: Sean Payton's Well, and I guess been.
- 4:23Speaker 3: A goal all along, you know, very early on in
- 4:26Speaker 3: his tenure. Uh, you know, he sort of said, hey, look,
- 4:30Speaker 3: that's you know, those streaks aren't mine, you know, type
- 4:34Speaker 3: of thing. So I think it's sort of been on
- 4:37Speaker 3: his mind since he's yeah, yeah, you know, and it's not.
- 4:42Speaker 3: And I think he's he's very much tried to tell
- 4:46Speaker 3: this group, you know, you're writing your own story, so
- 4:50Speaker 3: to speak. You're you're not beholding you know, to the
- 4:53Speaker 3: playoff drout or to the history of a franchise or
- 4:56Speaker 3: any of those things. And the NFL is so cyclical anyway,
- 5:02Speaker 3: you know, even in recent seasons, there weren't that many
- 5:05Speaker 3: players left, you know, in the locker room from from
- 5:09Speaker 3: the Super Bowl team, you know, maybe one or two.
- 5:12Speaker 3: You know, Brandon McManus for a long time and was
- 5:15Speaker 3: the only guy left from the from the Super Bowl team,
- 5:19Speaker 3: and Justin Simmons was the only guy who had sort
- 5:22Speaker 3: of been with the team at a position, you know,
- 5:25Speaker 3: for the for the entire playoffs, drout. So I think
- 5:28Speaker 3: that's been his point to this group. He already characterizes
- 5:32Speaker 3: it as a young and hungry team and that you
- 5:35Speaker 3: know that they don't have to worry about the past,
- 5:37Speaker 3: and I think he's done his best to sort of
- 5:40Speaker 3: push that off the table for all of them. And
- 5:44Speaker 3: you know, they they politely answer questions about it, but
- 5:47Speaker 3: they really don't have any emotional tie because again it's
- 5:52Speaker 3: it's the NFL. You're you're talking about guys who've been together,
- 5:56Speaker 3: you know, one, two or three seasons at most in
- 5:59Speaker 3: a lot of cases.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Jeff, what do you think is going on in the secondary?
- 6:03Speaker 4: I know, you know, certain positions get looked at them
- 6:05Speaker 4: more than others. But the quarterback thing has been decided.
- 6:08Speaker 4: I think it's been a fascinating preseason. We never saw
- 6:11Speaker 4: Brandon Jones play. I learned from you, frankly long ago
- 6:15Speaker 4: that even though you never blame a player for an injury.
- 6:18Speaker 4: Coaches don't love the old first week hamstring that seems
- 6:20Speaker 4: to keep you out of playing the whole preseason. What
- 6:23Speaker 4: do you think they'll do in the secondary beyond PS two?
- 6:25Speaker 4: Who do you think has maybe grabbed a job? Who
- 6:27Speaker 4: do you think could surprise us that's fighting for one?
- 6:31Speaker 3: Well, Andy, I think you know that. He hinted today
- 6:35Speaker 3: that the two guys have been hurt in the secondary
- 6:39Speaker 3: a lot in this training camp, Brandon Jones and Levi
- 6:42Speaker 3: Wallace could indeed get some snaps on Sunday, because, as
- 6:48Speaker 3: Sean Payton likes to say, he wants guys to play
- 6:50Speaker 3: in the preseason at least some. He is not a
- 6:53Speaker 3: fan of the hey, you get the preseason off because
- 6:56Speaker 3: you're a veteran. So he did hint that if those
- 6:59Speaker 3: guys are looking healthy, that they could play a couple
- 7:04Speaker 3: of snaps or a few snaps Sunday in the finale
- 7:06Speaker 3: and they'd be one of the two of the few
- 7:08Speaker 3: veterans who will play in the game. Uh Like, in
- 7:12Speaker 3: practice today, most of the starters on both sides of
- 7:15Speaker 3: the ball were essentially serving a scout team just to
- 7:17Speaker 3: get him some work as they worked on Cardinals stuff.
- 7:21Speaker 3: But I think that the secondary will be you know PJ.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Locke and and Jones at safety, and Sir Tan and
- 7:30Speaker 3: Riley Moss most of the time at corner with Tomary
- 7:34Speaker 3: mathis getting it, you know, moving in and out of
- 7:38Speaker 3: the lineup at times with Riley Moss and some of
- 7:41Speaker 3: the run fits. Uh. That's how it looks to me
- 7:44Speaker 3: in practice right now. And I think, you know, a
- 7:46Speaker 3: young guy to watch who they've they've developed a little
- 7:50Speaker 3: bit and really like is is Devon Key. I think
- 7:54Speaker 3: they've they've liked his work uh so far in camp too.
- 7:58Speaker 3: But uh, you know it's it's three new guys essentially,
- 8:02Speaker 3: and and Pat Certan. So uh, there are a lot
- 8:06Speaker 3: of questions still even if we know the lineup, until
- 8:09Speaker 3: we see the group play together. Uh, especially two new safeties,
- 8:14Speaker 3: a lot of communication has to happen at safety. Uh.
- 8:18Speaker 3: And they've been the Broncos have been the benefit of
- 8:21Speaker 3: having having vettered safety play for a few seasons now.
- 8:25Speaker 3: So I think early in the season you could see
- 8:28Speaker 3: you know, some motion and and you know formation switches
- 8:33Speaker 3: that that catch the Broncos at times, because again, you
- 8:37Speaker 3: got two new safeties trying to get used to playing
- 8:39Speaker 3: alongside each other.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Mikey, what's the plan an offensive line in this game? Is?
- 8:47Speaker 1: Is Luke Wantenberg going to play in this game? Is?
- 8:50Speaker 1: Is he locked in? Is the starter?
- 8:52Speaker 5: And and who are the depth guys that are going
- 8:54Speaker 5: to make this team? Is Paul Jesky good to go?
- 8:57Speaker 5: H our dude? Calvin Throckmorton? Is he gonna make this team?
- 9:00Speaker 5: Where we at there?
- 9:02Speaker 3: Dan, I think the big questions are trying to answer
- 9:04Speaker 3: is they've tried a bunch of guys at guard in
- 9:08Speaker 3: recent practices and in last Sunday's game too. You know,
- 9:12Speaker 3: Paulchwsky being one of those guys, usually a tackle, but
- 9:16Speaker 3: they've they've tried Alex ForSight the center at guard. H
- 9:21Speaker 3: And I think they're trying to see, you know, what's
- 9:25Speaker 3: the fewest number of linemen they can keep and still
- 9:28Speaker 3: function in the backup situation? You know, if they keep
- 9:32Speaker 3: three quarterbacks or if they keep an extra running back. Uh,
- 9:37Speaker 3: you know, that position's got to come from somewhere. That
- 9:39Speaker 3: roster spot's got to come from somewhere. And I don't
- 9:42Speaker 3: think they're certain yet like what the depth situation at
- 9:46Speaker 3: guard will be. And that's why you've seen a lot
- 9:49Speaker 3: of these guys switching in at guard when you may
- 9:52Speaker 3: not have been expecting it. And I do think if
- 9:55Speaker 3: there is one position where the odds are the greatest,
- 9:59Speaker 3: they will look at the waiver wire hard. I think
- 10:02Speaker 3: offensive line is that position.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Now.
- 10:06Speaker 3: I've also been told by a general manager or two
- 10:09Speaker 3: in the league that they don't expect many quality offensive
- 10:14Speaker 3: linemen to be on the waiver wire because everybody's got
- 10:17Speaker 3: the same issue with the COVID. You know, we're still
- 10:22Speaker 3: sort of in the last round of the extra years
- 10:26Speaker 3: of COVID eligibility in college football, and a lot of
- 10:30Speaker 3: those guys are offensive linemen, so there aren't quite as
- 10:34Speaker 3: many offensive linemen for depth purposes as there might be
- 10:38Speaker 3: in a usual year. So I think that's you know,
- 10:43Speaker 3: they'd like to, they'll take a long look, but I
- 10:45Speaker 3: don't know that they'll actually see someone they would deem
- 10:48Speaker 3: worthy of claiming. But today most of the second teamers
- 10:52Speaker 3: were getting the work. So you're going to see, you know,
- 10:56Speaker 3: Matt Purr at tackle. You know you're going to see
- 10:59Speaker 3: Watten or Forsyth and Paulchesky and some of these other
- 11:04Speaker 3: depth guys because they want to. They want to see
- 11:06Speaker 3: who can play multiple positions and function.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Jeff, if I were to pin you down, and I'm
- 11:12Speaker 4: not trying to take away any of your literature for
- 11:14Speaker 4: next week, but who would you have as either five
- 11:17Speaker 4: or six receivers on the roster?
- 11:19Speaker 1: Who would be your group?
- 11:22Speaker 3: I think Andy, I would keep six right now with
- 11:26Speaker 3: with you know your you know Sutton, you know mimes, Uh,
- 11:32Speaker 3: Tim Pat. I think Tim Patrick makes it. I think
- 11:35Speaker 3: both rookies make it, and Josh Reynolds. I think those
- 11:39Speaker 3: would be my six receivers right now.
- 11:44Speaker 4: That's interesting because I know you and Sandford talk a lot.
- 11:47Speaker 4: Do you think they worry at all about just more
- 11:49Speaker 4: of the straight liness of Troy Franklin or do you
- 11:51Speaker 4: think they.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Not a concern?
- 11:54Speaker 4: Do they keep him just because they don't think that
- 11:56Speaker 4: he'd get through to get back on the practice squad?
- 11:59Speaker 3: Some of it is how you frame it. I mean,
- 12:01Speaker 3: they're not you don't. You don't waive a guy because
- 12:03Speaker 3: he's not a finished product. You know, you're you're you're
- 12:07Speaker 3: looking at it, and they look they traded a lot
- 12:10Speaker 3: of draft value to move up to the second pick
- 12:14Speaker 3: of of day three to take him, so you know
- 12:18Speaker 3: that was that's an expenditure, and you know, you're questioned
- 12:24Speaker 3: for a guy that had that high value on the
- 12:27Speaker 3: board for a lot of teams, is you know, can
- 12:31Speaker 3: he get through waivers? Because he's not a veteran player,
- 12:35Speaker 3: they can't simply release him and say hey, we'll sign
- 12:37Speaker 3: you back and and work that off to the side.
- 12:41Speaker 3: They he's a he's not a vested player. He's got
- 12:44Speaker 3: fewer than four years in the league, so he has
- 12:46Speaker 3: to go through waivers and every team as a crack
- 12:50Speaker 3: at him. And I think that factors into it as well.
- 12:53Speaker 3: But again, you know, you you don't sort of punish rookies,
- 12:56Speaker 3: I don't think for not being a finished product, and
- 12:59Speaker 3: he he has had moments in camp when he's really struggled.
- 13:02Speaker 3: So you know, I think a lot of people are
- 13:05Speaker 3: looking at that as to okay, would they try to
- 13:08Speaker 3: put him on the practice squad and develop them? But
- 13:11Speaker 3: I think that is one player who may not squeak
- 13:13Speaker 3: through if you try that.
- 13:15Speaker 5: Jeff Lakewald here on a Friday afternoon, Legy will wrap
- 13:18Speaker 5: up on this question. No, it's not a hot Broncos
- 13:21Speaker 5: Cardinals preseason game number three preview question. No, it's this
- 13:25Speaker 5: You've had a chance to observe practice this week coming
- 13:27Speaker 5: off of game number two? What have been what do
- 13:30Speaker 5: you think of Ben the coaching points of emphasis for
- 13:33Speaker 5: bow Knicks, and what have you seen from him on
- 13:35Speaker 5: the practice field this week?
- 13:37Speaker 3: You know, Nate, I think what you saw was the
- 13:41Speaker 3: beginning of you know what Sean Payton is term tailoring,
- 13:46Speaker 3: you know, the game plan for bow Knicks. You saw
- 13:50Speaker 3: a lot of things he's comfortable with or that I
- 13:52Speaker 3: think they feel like he's comfortable with. You know, I
- 13:56Speaker 3: don't think Sean Payton has used a ton of the
- 14:00Speaker 3: Estol formation or you know, some of the bootleg game
- 14:05Speaker 3: or RPO game. I don't think you know, that hasn't
- 14:08Speaker 3: been an extensive part of his offense that I've looked
- 14:12Speaker 3: at through the years. You know, it's been there, it's
- 14:14Speaker 3: been in there, But I think he's they started to
- 14:18Speaker 3: sort of tinker with more of those types of things
- 14:21Speaker 3: with bow Nicks. You know, gonna be the starter h
- 14:25Speaker 3: And I will say, you know, and I don't know.
- 14:27Speaker 3: You know, it probably doesn't matter to folks because he's
- 14:30Speaker 3: you know, sort of technically the three. But Zach Wilson
- 14:33Speaker 3: was dealing this week, and I don't know if it
- 14:35Speaker 3: was just the okay, we finally got the formality of
- 14:39Speaker 3: this quarterback competition out of the way. And you know,
- 14:42Speaker 3: he didn't play that well last Sunday, and maybe he
- 14:45Speaker 3: was a little heated because of that. But I think
- 14:48Speaker 3: they're genuinely excited to see what he does with you know,
- 14:52Speaker 3: two or three quarters with the football to play against
- 14:55Speaker 3: some reserves, and you know that if they can block
- 14:58Speaker 3: it a little bit, he may actually get a chance
- 15:01Speaker 3: to throw the ball some and air it out a
- 15:03Speaker 3: little bit.
- 15:04Speaker 5: All right, Z dub gonna light up the Cardinals on Sunday.
- 15:08Speaker 5: Jeff Legwald, everybody, he's with us here on a Friday afternoon.
- 15:12Speaker 5: Jeff Legwald, brought to you by the International Brotherhood of
- 15:14Speaker 5: Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. Start with a job
- 15:19Speaker 5: and with a career. We should all hope to have
- 15:22Speaker 5: such a good career as our friend Jeff Legwald of ESPN.
- 15:25Speaker 5: Leggie will talk to you Monday, man, take care of
- 15:28Speaker 5: foulis sip
