- 0:34Hi everybody and welcome to a really
- 0:36special Heart to heart episode. It's
- 0:38really more a mini-sode because we're
- 0:39going to rush to dinner right after
- 0:41this.
- 0:42We had to take the opportunity while
- 0:44here we're here in Aviles, Spain because
- 0:47just the series of events that have led
- 0:50to this moment to find out that Anna and
- 0:52I are related through Danny have been
- 0:54just awesome. And we wanted to document
- 0:58it and the fact that Anna was one of my
- 0:59very first conversations on Heart to
- 1:02heart when it was still in the
- 1:03foundations.
- 1:04>> Baby podcast at the time.
- 1:05>> Baby podcast at the time and I'm so
- 1:06grateful that you did that for me.
- 1:09You know, I go way back with Anna. We go
- 1:11back to high school. We never knew these
- 1:14connections and the fact that we have
- 1:17come all the way across the water, the
- 1:19ocean to find out that we're related.
- 1:21It's just it was meant to be.
- 1:23>> It was meant to be.
- 1:24>> Godcidence. So without further ado, I
- 1:26want to reintroduce Anna Christina Cash
- 1:29to our show.
- 1:31And you guys may remember her. We
- 1:33interviewed her. She is a country singer
- 1:36in Nashville, Tennessee with Miami Cuban
- 1:39roots.
- 1:40>> That's right.
- 1:40>> Married to I would say what, Nashville
- 1:43royalty are they?
- 1:44>> [laughter]
- 1:45>> To the Cash family and here she is in
- 1:49Aviles, Spain and I found her through
- 1:50Instagram.
- 1:51>> Yes, it's it's the craziest thing. So
- 1:53I'd posted I think a video or something,
- 1:56a photo of me in Aviles and she messaged
- 1:58me, DM'd me and she's like, "Anna,
- 2:00what are you doing in Aviles? We're
- 2:01here." I'm like, "Well, I'm visiting my
- 2:03family." Well, we're like, "We're
- 2:04visiting our family." It's like Danny's
- 2:06family in Aviles. I'm like, "Wait a
- 2:07second." So, we got in a group chat, we
- 2:09started talking, we met up, and we're
- 2:11like, "How is this connected? Are we
- 2:13cousins? Are we related?" And it turns
- 2:14out yes, that we are.
- 2:16And it's through a lady named uh
- 2:19Adelaida.
- 2:20>> Adelaida. Yeah.
- 2:20>> Adelaida. Yes. So, at this point I
- 2:22should say that I was not prepared to
- 2:24interview anybody on this uh
- 2:26vacation of mine. I only have two
- 2:28microphones today, so I'm actually going
- 2:30to pass it over to Danny, who's the one
- 2:31that really made the connection while we
- 2:33were on a drive.
- 2:34>> one that really knows how we're related.
- 2:35>> [laughter]
- 2:37>> It's funny. Well, uh hi everybody. Um
- 2:40so, Aviles, Asturias
- 2:42is the third largest uh city in
- 2:45Asturias, which is um
- 2:47a state, if you will, uh in northern
- 2:50Spain.
- 2:51And uh our connection here is through my
- 2:54father, uh who was born in Cuba
- 2:57>> [clears throat]
- 2:57>> to um
- 3:00descendants, obviously, of of this area.
- 3:02And his maternal grandfather uh and his
- 3:06brothers had come to Cuba from this area
- 3:09uh at the turn of the century. And um
- 3:12they have a name for them here, uh the
- 3:15Asturianos that would leave Asturias
- 3:17seeking
- 3:18their fortune, their opportunity in the
- 3:21new world, in the Americas, and they
- 3:23call them Indianos. And so, uh those
- 3:26people that were from this area, not
- 3:27just Aviles, but other cities and towns
- 3:29from the area, they would go to Mexico,
- 3:32Cuba, and Argentina primarily, uh and
- 3:35start businesses. And uh you know,
- 3:38traditional aspirational immigrant
- 3:40story, uh they'd go, they'd start their
- 3:42businesses, and and you know, be very uh
- 3:45enterprising and and build very
- 3:47successful you know, businesses, and uh
- 3:50always with a look back to this area.
- 3:52And they came and and bought property
- 3:54and built homes. And the homes that they
- 3:56built here, um they're identified as
- 3:59casas de Indianos. And uh there's a
- 4:02symbolic palm tree uh planted in front
- 4:04of their homes. Uh
- 4:06representing obviously the you know the
- 4:09their roots to uh to Cuba and the
- 4:10islands. Uh so that's kind of our
- 4:12connection here. And um
- 4:15we've been coming here for a long time.
- 4:17My father uh leaves Cuba in December of
- 4:201960.
- 4:21And uh the family business then was
- 4:24textiles. Um they had a distribution
- 4:27business where they imported uh
- 4:29textiles, distributed them all over the
- 4:31island. Uh then they manufactured uh
- 4:34clothing, textiles, uniforms for the
- 4:37military. And then they had a store uh
- 4:39called La Isla de Cuba uh in Havana.
- 4:42And that business was nationalized uh at
- 4:45the beginning of the revolution. Uh
- 4:47obviously it provoked our family coming
- 4:49back here. So my dad actually moved here
- 4:52in 1960 and spent um you know his
- 4:55formative years here. So obviously our
- 4:58roots are very very closely tied to this
- 5:00place.
- 5:01Um and so we were talking about these
- 5:03things um and uh since I had been here a
- 5:07lot
- 5:08>> When I saw the picture of Anna and Anna
- 5:10told me she has family here, I go,
- 5:11"Well, there has to be a connection
- 5:12because there's only 10 Cubans in LA."
- 5:15>> [laughter]
- 5:15>> So there has to be
- 5:16some sort of connection.
- 5:18>> Yeah.
- 5:19>> Right?
- 5:19>> Yep.
- 5:19>> And how was the connection made? I
- 5:22forgot. We were in the car.
- 5:24>> Well, just like he was explaining his
- 5:25family history and everything about his
- 5:27father and everything in his family
- 5:28here, it's it's the same story. Turn of
- 5:30the century. My um great grandmother and
- 5:33great grandfather, both from the area,
- 5:34Milania, my great grandmother, Rafael.
- 5:37Um we're distant cousins.
- 5:39>> Right. [laughter]
- 5:39>> You know, it's you know, but not close
- 5:41cousins clearly. They married, but in
- 5:42Cuba. My um
- 5:45my great
- 5:47I think it's um
- 5:49it was Melania's aunt Paola and Rafael.
- 5:53They brought Melania to Cuba and it was
- 5:56the steamships at the time. You know, it
- 5:57was like a 2-week trip. It was very
- 5:59dangerous. People got sick at the time.
- 6:01>> Sure.
- 6:02>> Um so this these were huge sacrifices
- 6:04that were made like in my family and
- 6:05Danny's family and we're family so in
- 6:07our families.
- 6:08>> Right.
- 6:08>> Now um so essentially they got married
- 6:11in Cuba, stayed there, they started a
- 6:12farm, they had their own business and
- 6:14everything and we just started chatting
- 6:16about how we were possibly related so so
- 6:18I think it's I believe it's through
- 6:19Paola who is related
- 6:21um to Adelaida. Is that correct? And and
- 6:25Tony. It's Paola Paola, Adelaida and
- 6:28Tony are the way that we're related.
- 6:30>> Yeah.
- 6:30>> Those three.
- 6:31>> Yeah, so so there's um
- 6:34so my great-grandfather, Rafael Suarez
- 6:37Rodriguez,
- 6:38his older brother, Primitivo Suarez
- 6:40Rodriguez, was married to Nana and
- 6:43Adelaida. That's Adelaida. Perez.
- 6:46Um and
- 6:47>> your great great great aunt?
- 6:51>> It's a layer up, right? So cuz
- 6:53Adelaida's father is Antonio Garcia.
- 6:56>> Yes.
- 6:57>> And then he had sisters and that sister
- 7:00is Paola.
- 7:01>> Paola.
- 7:01>> And and that's it.
- 7:03>> that adopted um my great-grandmother
- 7:06because her parents died. They she was
- 7:08an orphan essentially.
- 7:10Um just very sad. She became orphan at a
- 7:13young age and they took her in but it
- 7:15was a blood relation so it wasn't like
- 7:16an adopted relation, you know? So
- 7:19essentially they were family by blood
- 7:21and that's how we're connected by blood,
- 7:23you know? Then he's my cousin.
- 7:25>> And the [clears throat] crazy
- 7:25coincidence that my father-in-law was
- 7:28raised by his grandparents.
- 7:30>> Mhm.
- 7:31>> Just just like your side of the family.
- 7:33I mean, the
- 7:34the continued coincidences are just
- 7:36eerie at this point when we're piecing
- 7:38everything together. The first thing she
- 7:40tells me is that, you know, she's going
- 7:42to go take a look at paperwork at San
- 7:44Nicolas Valley, which is the local
- 7:46church here and that you had to go
- 7:47somewhere de la Luz.
- 7:49>> Yes, la Virgen de la Luz. So we got to
- 7:50go. Apparently what I was told by my
- 7:53cousin Rafael Garcia that's here. He's
- 7:55lovely man and also Jose Alfredo Garcia
- 7:58is that most of our family went to
- 7:59church there. So most of the baptisms,
- 8:01like the weddings. Of course like all of
- 8:03this area there's so many churches to
- 8:04choose from but I think that was the one
- 8:06that they were parishioners at. So I got
- 8:08to visit and I felt like just this
- 8:10beautiful feeling come over me that I
- 8:12felt like I like I've been there before
- 8:14like I'm connected to this place and
- 8:15John felt it too, my husband.
- 8:17And just a beautiful stone church on the
- 8:20inside the Virgin Mary with the you know
- 8:23the shawl. What do you say? Robe?
- 8:25>> Uh the uh
- 8:26>> What's it called?
- 8:27>> Velo.
- 8:27>> Velo. The veil. The veil.
- 8:29>> And just a very simple church not huge
- 8:32but but very very special and very old
- 8:34from what I imagine. I don't know the
- 8:35exact history of how old it is but
- 8:37there's so much history here in in
- 8:38Aviles. It's a medieval town. Gorgeous
- 8:41if you have not been. Um
- 8:43there's so much to do, so much to see.
- 8:45The The food is amazing and just you
- 8:46know, I've always connected with my
- 8:48Cuban side and I visited Aviles for the
- 8:50first time when I was 15 years old with
- 8:52my parents. They brought me when I was
- 8:5315.
- 8:54Um but I had not come since until like 4
- 8:56years ago essentially with my husband
- 8:58and with my own children. And just being
- 9:00back here really spending time with the
- 9:02family and and they visited me in the
- 9:04States as well. We just realized we're
- 9:06so connected and I'm just as proud to be
- 9:08Cuban as I am to be Spanish as well. So
- 9:11I think that's it's just very special to
- 9:12come back. And I feel like everywhere
- 9:15you turn here and just all of Asturias
- 9:17really, all of it there's there's
- 9:19something new to learn. It's it's really
- 9:21surprising. Just like everywhere we've
- 9:23been over time. It's just like so
- 9:25special.
- 9:25>> Right. And the other eerie coincidence
- 9:28about de la Luz is we went to la Iglesia
- 9:31de la Luz and Danny will share that one
- 9:35one his relatives was the one that
- 9:36dressed the Virgin veil.
- 9:38>> Yeah.
- 9:39>> Yeah, so so that church has a long
- 9:41history with the family
- 9:42and it was kind of the focal point for
- 9:45that area.
- 9:46>> Mhm.
- 9:46>> Um and you know, I I've come to
- 9:48appreciate it a lot more on this trip
- 9:50cuz I've had a little bit more time to
- 9:52kind of explore uh where the family was
- 9:55really originally from.
- 9:57And this whole area, the distances are
- 9:59are pretty significant, right? And
- 10:01obviously today we take for granted that
- 10:03we have highways
- 10:06And back then they didn't. They'd have
- 10:07to either walk or or horse and buggy,
- 10:10right?
- 10:11>> And so, you know, to get to these and
- 10:12there's hills and mountains, right? So
- 10:15on top of just like, "Hey, it's you
- 10:16know, a couple miles away." But a couple
- 10:18miles in you know, altitude and like no
- 10:20roads, it wasn't easy to get around. So
- 10:23um you know, that's why there was a lot
- 10:24of churches and then this church in
- 10:26particular uh I came to find out uh that
- 10:30my great-grandfather had been baptized
- 10:32there.
- 10:33And um you know, La Virgen has symbolism
- 10:37in uh expectant mothers and mothers in
- 10:40childbirth and those who have passed in
- 10:42childbirth.
- 10:43And um unfortunately my
- 10:47great-grandfather's daughter, my
- 10:48grandmother, my father's mother uh
- 10:50passed in childbirth uh giving birth to
- 10:53my father when she was 18 years old uh
- 10:55in Havana.
- 10:56And um you know, obviously again
- 11:00he was a devout um you know, Catholic to
- 11:03a you know, that that Virgin um
- 11:06obviously before any of this stuff
- 11:08happened.
- 11:09And on one of his many trips uh
- 11:11returning from the island to Asturias
- 11:14because they were in the textile
- 11:16business um he came back with a veil uh
- 11:20in a
- 11:22velour I guess. What what's the velvet?
- 11:24Excuse me. That is your velo is what it
- 11:26is in Spanish. I don't even know what it
- 11:27is in English anymore.
- 11:28>> Um anyway, it it it was a beautiful
- 11:31piece that you know, was delivered to
- 11:34the church and and has been hanging with
- 11:36the Virgin
- 11:37uh since then. So, in the 1920s. So,
- 11:40it's pretty special church for us.
- 11:42>> At Heartful Living, I believe in
- 11:44building a community, [music] not just a
- 11:46brand. The partners we feature aren't
- 11:48just sponsors, they're part of our
- 11:50tribe. Kindred spirits who walk
- 11:52alongside us in this journey of
- 11:53intentional [music] and joyful living.
- 11:55From soulful products to meaningful
- 11:57missions, each [music] one is aligned
- 11:59with both heart and purpose. These
- 12:01partnerships are about more than
- 12:03collaboration, [music] they're about
- 12:04connection. And if you're a brand, a
- 12:06creator, or a business who shares our
- 12:08values, we'd love to hear from you.
- 12:10Let's create something beautiful
- 12:12together.
- 12:12>> [music]
- 12:13>> Visit us at heartfulliving.com to
- 12:15connect and become part of the Heartful
- 12:17Living story.
- 12:19>> Two degrees of separation in Luquillo. I
- 12:22say it all the time and now it's
- 12:23literal.
- 12:24>> Now it's literal and it's amazing
- 12:26because I've I've known you both for
- 12:27like over 20 years. Like I went to high
- 12:29school with you and just through friends
- 12:30we met like years ago and then I left
- 12:32Miami and then we're like connected, you
- 12:35know, and from the same community and we
- 12:37had to come all the way to Spain to find
- 12:39out that we're related and it's it's
- 12:41just amazing. It's just such a small
- 12:42world. And I I just can't explain the
- 12:46feeling that I get when I'm here. I'm
- 12:48just really happy to be here. It's
- 12:49almost like being home. It is like being
- 12:50home in many ways. If you think about
- 12:52the sacrifices
- 12:53that um our families have made to to
- 12:57make a better life for themselves. I
- 12:58think you explained that very well the
- 12:59other day just how um you know, it's
- 13:02very rural back then. Um the roads, you
- 13:04know, not much going on essentially. And
- 13:07and to be specific La La Virgen La
- 13:09Ermita de la Virgen de la Luz was in
- 13:12Villalegre and I know that that's where
- 13:14my great grandmother and great
- 13:16grandfather were from pretty much. I
- 13:17know my great grandfather, Rafael, was
- 13:20born in Trasona and Melania somewhere in
- 13:23Aviles, who knows? Like pretty much
- 13:24Villalegre. So, you know, it's very very
- 13:27special.
- 13:28>> I'm sure if we continue digging
- 13:29>> We need to continue digging. Yes.
- 13:31>> So, interestingly enough, Danny and I
- 13:33did extra digging Sherlock Holmes and
- 13:35Watson type stuff the other day. We went
- 13:37to the cemetery in search of his
- 13:39great-grandmother. Who we actually could
- 13:41not find. And
- 13:42>> And we found some of my relatives, too.
- 13:43>> But we're a whole corner in the
- 13:45cemetery. We're all together. [laughter]
- 13:46It's crazy.
- 13:48I turned around and there's your your
- 13:50family Garcia Garcia just standing right
- 13:51in front of you.
- 13:52>> E Garcia because there were Garcias that
- 13:54got that married each other. Anyways,
- 13:56that's that's why Garcia E Garcia.
- 13:57That's what they do in Spain. They add
- 13:59on last names like there's no tomorrow.
- 14:01So, yeah.
- 14:02>> So, we're just going to keep digging. Um
- 14:04Anna also has uh family in the Canary
- 14:07Islands and I have family in the Canary
- 14:09Islands.
- 14:09>> knows? Maybe there's more to unravel
- 14:11that as well. We're going to start
- 14:12unraveling well.
- 14:13>> [laughter]
- 14:14>> But Anna, it's been so amazing getting
- 14:16to spend time with you here of all
- 14:19places.
- 14:20>> We're having so much fun together. This
- 14:21is great.
- 14:22>> Yes. And we miss her sister. Her sister
- 14:24already took off to the airport.
- 14:25>> My sister Marissa was just here with her
- 14:27daughter Abigail who's getting married
- 14:28in December in Miami and we're having a
- 14:31great time. My my daughter Grace is in
- 14:33camp here in Aviles and um you know, so
- 14:35much is spoken about also from her
- 14:37father's side really to like John's
- 14:39father was Johnny Cash, June Carter and
- 14:41everything. And but I always tell them
- 14:42you're you're Latina.
- 14:44You know, you have Spanish, you have
- 14:45Cuban. Like there are all these other
- 14:47things that are a part of your life, you
- 14:48know, that you know, kind of trying to
- 14:50turn my kids into well-rounded people
- 14:52essentially and just explain all of the
- 14:54history on all sides.
- 14:55>> And you know, I love that you said that
- 14:56because that goes for our children as
- 14:58well. We're very much instilling in them
- 15:00you're Cuban, you're Cuban, but you're
- 15:01also Spanish.
- 15:02>> You are. Yes. Exactly.
- 15:04>> Um so, I'm so glad that you're immersing
- 15:06your children and doing this as young as
- 15:08they are.
- 15:09>> As as you both are as well. And your
- 15:11children are lovely. I got to see them
- 15:12today. So
- 15:13>> Likewise. You're great.
- 15:14Well, we're only just starting this
- 15:16family reunion because we've already
- 15:18committed to seeing each other again
- 15:19back in the States.
- 15:20>> They can't get rid of me, I told them.
- 15:22[laughter] And vice versa. So, you know,
- 15:24coincidences keep happening and
- 15:26um your daughter,
- 15:28>> Yes.
- 15:29>> is born on September 11th, and your
- 15:31birthday
- 15:32>> is September 11th.
- 15:33>> September [laughter] 11th.
- 15:34>> So, they're going to come visit us in
- 15:34Nashville and watch us on the Grand Ole
- 15:36Opry. We're so excited. It's going to be
- 15:38so fun. And we can celebrate you and
- 15:40Grace.
- 15:41>> Thank you. Well, I'm thrilled to do
- 15:42that. I'm a big country music fan. And
- 15:45uh been always wanting to go to the
- 15:46Grand Ole Opry, so it'll be a treat.
- 15:47>> And I I told you I've never been to
- 15:49Nashville.
- 15:50>> Oh my god.
- 15:50>> And you promised me a trip to the Cash
- 15:52Cabin, so we're going to make it finally
- 15:53happen.
- 15:54>> to do that and so much more. We're going
- 15:55to have dinner. We're going to take you
- 15:56around. It's going to be amazing.
- 15:57>> So exciting. So, the next time you see
- 16:00us all together, we're going to be in
- 16:01Nashville, Tennessee. But for now, we
- 16:03are going to take off and go to dinner,
- 16:06uh because all we do while we're out
- 16:07here is eat.
- 16:08>> Well, there's also Miami. I can see you
- 16:10guys in Miami anytime. I'm there back
- 16:12and forth all the time.
- 16:12>> So so it's funny because your husband is
- 16:15also a sea hunter boatman like me.
- 16:17>> He is. Yes. And you're an adventure man.
- 16:19>> I love outdoorsman just like your
- 16:21husband, so there's going to be a lot a
- 16:22lot more to do together, for sure.
- 16:23[laughter]
- 16:24It's exciting.
- 16:26>> Well, we're going to take off now and go
- 16:28to dinner because I just asked my
- 16:30husband if the restaurant we're going to
- 16:32is on Cuban time, and he says that they
- 16:34are not, so
- 16:35>> Cubans are always on time there.
- 16:36>> Yeah.
- 16:37>> Yes. You know, because dinners do take 3
- 16:39hours long, so we have to get there at
- 16:40time.
- 16:40>> And they start late. Usually the sweet
- 16:42spot's about 9:00 p.m., 9:30, I've
- 16:44learned, and it's and it's very sociable
- 16:46and people are communicating and they're
- 16:47really connecting here, which is so
- 16:48special.
- 16:49>> Thank you so much, both of you, for
- 16:50taking time out of our schedules to do
- 16:53this. This was wonderful.
- 16:55>> Our schedules of eating every day.
- 16:56>> Yeah. We're going [laughter] to go eat
- 16:57again.
- 16:59>> It's amazing.
- 17:00>> That's all we have for now. Thank you
