- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Have you noticed we pay little attention to something that's broken?
- 0:05I mean,
- 0:06we'll notice it at first,
- 0:08but unless it's repaired,
- 0:09we just kind of ignore it.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Also,
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: there's abandoned buildings that rarely attract attention or opposition,
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: and frankly,
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: a neglected relationship seldom faces resistance.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: And
- 0:26From experience,
- 0:27a business in decline is often ignored by the competitors.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: But you know something?
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: The moment rebuilding begins, everything changes.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Suddenly,
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: people notice,
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: critics emerge,
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: doubters appear,
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: competitors become alert,
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: and the greatest challenge often isn't the opposition around us.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: It's the discouragement within us.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Marketplace Proverbs and Coffee with Ernie,
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: where a proverb a day keeps stinking thinking at bay.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: I'm Ernie Lansford.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: After more than 60 years in sales and leadership, I've learned that
- 1:14Biblical Wisdom is the most valuable asset we can carry into
- 1:19the marketplace.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Each time I read Proverbs,
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Scripture reveals practical insight for leadership,
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: service,
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: and building relationships that far outlast the last transaction.
- 1:34So pour yourself a cup of your favorite brew and let's explore
- 1:39today's proverb together.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: today we are in Proverbs 21 because it's the 21st day of the month,
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: and I'm using verse 5 from the Holman Christian Standard Bible,
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: HCSV.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Quote,
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: The plans of the diligent certainly lead to profit,
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: but anyone who is reckless certainly becomes poor.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: That's Proverbs 21.5.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: using the Holman Christian Standard Bible.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: And this is part of a book that I'm working on,
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: and it will be chapter 21,
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: and the title is Mind to Work.
- 2:28One of my favorite leadership stories in Scripture is found in
- 2:34the book of Nehemiah.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: In fact, Nehemiah is one of my favorite
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: leaders of all of the characters in the Bible.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Now, let's recap.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Jerusalem's wall had been lying in ruins for more than a century.
- 2:52What was once a symbol of strength and protection and identity
- 2:58had frankly become rubble.
- 3:00And the surrounding enemies paid little attention because,
- 3:06frankly,
- 3:07a broken wall
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: poses absolutely zero threat.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Then Nehemiah arrived.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: He surveyed the damage.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: He assessed the situation and then developed a plan.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: But more importantly, he inspired people to rebuild.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 3:29what really intrigues me is that Nehemiah's greatest challenge
- 3:33wasn't rebuilding
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: the wall itself.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: It was the people.
- 3:38You know,
- 3:39it's human nature to focus on the rubble before we notice the
- 3:43rebuilding.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: And apparently Nehemiah's team was no different.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Some of them became discouraged,
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: some became tired,
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: and yes,
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: there was the typical criticism,
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: threats,
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: and opposition from outside forces,
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: the enemies of Jerusalem.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: But going into and extracting a couple of scripture verses,
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah records in 4 verse 6,
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: using the ESV,
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: So we built the wall,
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: and all the wall was joined together to half its height,
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: for the people had a mind to work.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: I love that phrase, a mind to work.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: It's more than a plan, a vision, an enthusiasm.
- 4:32It's a mindset of work,
- 4:34a true desire to work as a team on a project,
- 4:39in this case,
- 4:40a wall.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: I,
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: like many marketplace leaders,
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: have faced similar situations,
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: an existing territory or account list in need of repair,
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: and sometimes we join a struggling team and
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Sometimes we walk into damaged customer relationships.
- 5:03And sometimes we discover that trust has been lost and
- 5:08credibility has eroded.
- 5:11It's our human nature to initially focus on the rubble,
- 5:16not unlike Nehemiah's team.
- 5:19And from my perspective,
- 5:21I feel the wiser approach is frankly to focus on rebuilding.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: As I reflect on Nehemiah's leadership, seven principles stand out.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: First, he kept things simple.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: He understood that complicated plans often create confusion.
- 5:43I believe gospel-centric customer success masters communicate
- 5:49clearly enough that
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: everyone understands the objective.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Second, Nehemiah encouraged participation.
- 5:58The wall wasn't rebuilt by a handful of experts like high-paid
- 6:01McKinsey consultants.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Everyone who was willing and able contributed.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: And third, Nehemiah reinforced motivation.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Remember,
- 6:14we the people need constant reminders of what we're working
- 6:18toward because vision
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: becomes fuzzy if it isn't regularly refocused.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: And fourth,
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah prepared for adversity.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: He hoped for peace, but frankly prepared for conflict.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: You know, wisdom requires both faith and readiness.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: And five, Nehemiah cultivated cooperation.
- 6:46He recruited and included different families from different
- 6:50trades and social
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: classes to work together toward the common goal of rebuilding the wall.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Sixth,
- 6:59he delegated responsibility He mashed people with tasks that
- 7:05fit their abilities
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: and strengths And seventh,
- 7:10he celebrated progress It's often leaders who only recognize
- 7:15the finish line often
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: lose the team before they arrive You know,
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: small victories matter
- 7:24Now,
- 7:25what strikes me most is how these principles align with
- 7:30Proverbs 21 verse 5.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: The diligent don't merely dream.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: They plan, prepare, and persevere.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: They remain faithful when the work becomes difficult.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: And frankly, that's why telemetry matters during rebuilding sessions.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: If we're not careful
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Discouragement can distort our perspective.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: We begin measuring the size of the rubble rather than our progress.
- 8:05It's just human nature to focus on what remains broken instead
- 8:10of what's already been restored.
- 8:13Now,
- 8:13we have to pay attention to what remains to be done,
- 8:16but we also have to look and,
- 8:19frankly,
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Look at and be proud of, I guess, of what's already been rebuilt.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 8:27I've learned that rebuilding almost always takes longer than we
- 8:31plan or hope,
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: which means meaningful things usually do.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: I'm reminded of a quote by Wendley Phipps,
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: quote,
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: if the mountain path was smooth,
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: you couldn't climb it,
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: end quote.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: I love that quote.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Building strong relationships,
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: trust,
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: character,
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: teams,
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: family,
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: businesses,
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: and frankly,
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: kingdom influence takes time and dedication,
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: and it's not a smooth path.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: It's not something that happens overnight.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: But the good news is that the rubble is not evidence of failure.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Often, rubble is evidence that rebuilding has begun.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Keep in mind,
- 9:15Jerusalem's enemies weren't concerned about Jerusalem as a
- 9:20viable entity until the
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: rebuilding actually started.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: And there are parallels in the marketplace.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: Failing companies, failing brands rarely face attack.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: Dying brands rarely face competition.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: And broken teams rarely face opposition.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: But you know, once Movenum returns, the competitors wake up.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: And remember,
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah's simple observation when the enemy,
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: competition,
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: began to notice,
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: he said,
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: the people had a mind to work.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: You know, sometimes God isn't asking us to finish the wall today.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: He may be simply asking us to show up tomorrow
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: with a mind to work.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: Think on that.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Today's customer success code, rubble is not evidence of failure.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: It's often evidence that rebuilding has begun.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Today's action points,
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: action point number one is identify an area of your life,
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: business,
- 10:34or relationships currently under reconstruction or needs to be
- 10:38reconstructed.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: Action point number two is ask yourself,
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: Am I focusing more on the rubble or on the rebuilding?
- 10:48And action point number three is evaluate whether
- 10:50discouragement has distorted your perspective.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Think on that.
- 10:57Well,

- 11:15SPEAKER_00: We truly do.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: And remember, chasing personal success is temporal.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Adding significance to others is infinite.
