Latest / Twin Cities Territory / Byron Buxton injured again; is it Walker Jenkins time for Twins?
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: This rollercoaster Minnesota Twins season continues in Sacramento after a
- 0:06Speaker 1: win on Monday that saw the Bats break out for
- 0:09Speaker 1: nine runs and a strong start from Zebby Matthews on Tuesday.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Bats disappeared. Taj Bradley was strong. But the big news
- 0:17Speaker 1: was an injury late in the game to Byron Buxton
- 0:20Speaker 1: who re-aggravated his hip and will surely spark more calls
- 0:25Speaker 1: for top prospect Walker Jenkins. We'll start with that today
- 0:28Speaker 1: on Twin Cities Territory. your Minnesota Twins podcast here on
- 0:32Speaker 1: the Foul Territory Network. One and one so far in Sacramento.
- 0:36Speaker 1: One more game to go against the A's on Wednesday night.
- 0:38Speaker 1: It is Wednesday morning today as we talk to you now.
- 0:41Speaker 1: The big news, as I said, Byron Buxton. The Twins
- 0:45Speaker 1: had done nothing all game against Gage Jump, the A's starter.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Finally got back in the game with two runs in
- 0:50Speaker 1: the top of the seventh. And then in the bottom
- 0:51Speaker 1: half of the seventh inning, the A's Henry Bulte hit
- 0:54Speaker 1: a ball into the gap in right center. Byron Buxton
- 0:57Speaker 1: trying to track it down and just like didn't get
- 0:59Speaker 1: down for the ball all the way, rolled under his glove,
- 1:02Speaker 1: went to the wall. Bolte ended up with a triple.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Buxton immediately, uh, shown stretching out in the outfield. Trainers
- 1:09Speaker 1: came out, took him out of the game and he left, uh,
- 1:13Speaker 1: with that injury. And Dan, you were there. Uh, what
- 1:15Speaker 1: was the word after the game on Buxton?
- 1:19Speaker 2: More right hip discomfort and, um, The twins are in
- 1:24Speaker 2: wait-and-see mode is how they described it. Obviously, it's a
- 1:28Speaker 2: weird setup that the training room, because you're at a
- 1:31Speaker 2: AAA ballpark, the training room is not right next to
- 1:35Speaker 2: the clubhouse here, and so they really didn't have a
- 1:38Speaker 2: chance to talk to Buxton before.
- 1:41Speaker 3: The training staff is.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Not there working on Buxton, so they were not able
- 1:46Speaker 2: to get in contact with Derek Shelton, but this is
- 1:51Speaker 2: just something that Byron Buxton has been dealing with off
- 1:54Speaker 2: and on for three and a half months. It's nothing
- 1:57Speaker 2: new as far as what it is. I don't know
- 2:00Speaker 2: about severity. I don't know if he's going to have
- 2:02Speaker 2: an MRI today, what the plan is. We just know
- 2:06Speaker 2: that Byron Buxton exited a game where he ran into
- 2:11Speaker 2: it again. We've seen it happen time and time again
- 2:15Speaker 2: this season. Clearly, this hip is just continue to bug him.
- 2:19Speaker 2: And there's not much that he's been able to do
- 2:21Speaker 2: to get it right. And it's affected his play. You know,
- 2:26Speaker 2: he handled it really well the first, I'd say six weeks.
- 2:30Speaker 3: And that was May and through June.
- 2:33Speaker 2: And he was performing well enough to get an all-star
- 2:36Speaker 2: nod and get voted into the all-star game.
- 2:39Speaker 3: But Really, he's slowed down. I mean, he has not
- 2:41Speaker 3: homered since June 22nd.
- 2:42Speaker 2: It's a span of 104 plate appearances.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Faced a tough pitcher last night after having a really
- 2:49Speaker 3: good game on Monday night.
- 2:51Speaker 2: You know, Buxton went three for four and got on
- 2:54Speaker 2: base four times on Monday.
- 2:55Speaker 3: I think he drew a walk also.
- 2:58Speaker 2: And hit a laser towards left that looked like if
- 3:02Speaker 2: he gets a little bit further under it, there's your
- 3:04Speaker 2: home run and you're But to come back the next night,
- 3:07Speaker 2: went 0-3, struck out three times, facing actually a pitcher
- 3:10Speaker 2: who had really good stuff and was making everybody with
- 3:13Speaker 2: the Twins struggle, look rough, just look out of sorts, engage, jump.
- 3:20Speaker 2: But definitely not encouraging to see the way that he
- 3:25Speaker 2: couldn't get down to the ball. That ball, he's running
- 3:28Speaker 2: to his left and– It was just like the body
- 3:32Speaker 2: was unwilling to go down and get the ball and
- 3:34Speaker 2: it scooted underneath. And usually you see him make that
- 3:39Speaker 2: even if he's sliding, you know, there's something there. And
- 3:42Speaker 2: he was it looks like unable to do it. And
- 3:45Speaker 2: so they're saying right hip discomfort. I don't know if
- 3:49Speaker 2: it's anything new or different, but it's, you know, comes
- 3:53Speaker 2: a couple of weeks after that shot. So it's definitely discouraging,
- 3:56Speaker 2: I think, for the twins.
- 3:59Speaker 1: As a 43-year-old softball player, I can certainly relate to
- 4:02Speaker 1: not being able to get down for the ball. I
- 4:04Speaker 1: had one of those a few weeks ago. Tyler, we
- 4:07Speaker 1: were talking before the show about this. Obviously, a bad
- 4:12Speaker 1: break for Buxton. They just keep coming for him. Injuries
- 4:15Speaker 1: have always been a problem, and this one just seems
- 4:16Speaker 1: to keep lingering.
- 4:19Speaker 4: It's been a couple of years now where that hip
- 4:22Speaker 4: has been significant. It's unfortunate that you know, and it
- 4:27Speaker 4: makes you wonder if it's something that maybe he's been
- 4:30Speaker 4: told isn't a surgery thing. Like maybe there isn't a
- 4:34Speaker 4: quick fix, so to speak. You know, and he's tough
- 4:37Speaker 4: as nails. Like, I think that's what we have to
- 4:39Speaker 4: remember is he's been playing through some version of this
- 4:42Speaker 4: for a long time now. And, you know, it's just,
- 4:46Speaker 4: it's wear and tear in his body, man. He plays
- 4:48Speaker 4: a premium position. He's a high octane player when he's
- 4:51Speaker 4: on the field. And it's just, he's frankly, he's built
- 4:54Speaker 4: different than, 99% of the world. And, you know, his
- 4:58Speaker 4: top end is so much different than the average human being.
- 5:02Speaker 4: And sometimes things happen and it's, you know, obviously unfortunate,
- 5:06Speaker 4: more importantly for him, but at this point, very importantly
- 5:09Speaker 4: for the twins that, you know, it's, it's putting them
- 5:11Speaker 4: in a tight spot and, you know, you hope, you
- 5:15Speaker 4: hope today goes well and he's, he wakes up and
- 5:17Speaker 4: he's fine. It may be just caught a little bit,
- 5:19Speaker 4: you know, inflammation is weird sometimes in those.
- 5:22Speaker 5: Joints, you know, it just makes you not move as well.
- 5:25Speaker 4: And, you know, what was the thing that stood out
- 5:28Speaker 4: to me was him, the lack of attempt to even
- 5:31Speaker 4: go for the ball when it happened. That tells me
- 5:32Speaker 4: that it wasn't just a little like, oh, what was
- 5:35Speaker 4: that twinge? It was, hey, you need to stop moving now.
- 5:38Speaker 4: You know, he's a little hesitant to put weight on
- 5:41Speaker 4: it after the play. You know, like Dan mentioned, you know,
- 5:44Speaker 4: the clubhouse set up there, they're out in right field,
- 5:47Speaker 4: you know, you don't even get to talk to each
- 5:48Speaker 4: other during games. You know, Severino's publicly talked about how
- 5:52Speaker 4: much he hates playing at Sacramento, but Um, you know,
- 5:55Speaker 4: obviously you hope today some good things come out, but
- 5:57Speaker 4: at the same time, it's one, I think Byron's going
- 6:00Speaker 4: to have to make a tough decision, you know, in
- 6:02Speaker 4: the next couple of days, probably today for that matter,
- 6:04Speaker 4: you know, can I go or not? And, you know,
- 6:07Speaker 4: for the twins sake, he's, he's got to make that decision,
- 6:10Speaker 4: which is never easy, but it's something he's going to
- 6:12Speaker 4: have to do because they need somebody who can be
- 6:14Speaker 4: on the field. And if he needs two weeks, take
- 6:17Speaker 4: her two weeks, get somebody up who can just fill
- 6:20Speaker 4: the position. Cause as, as it is now, He was
- 6:23Speaker 4: on base four times, and then.
- 6:25Speaker 5: He's out of the game the next day.
- 6:26Speaker 4: So it's one of those, whether it's workload or whatever
- 6:29Speaker 4: it is, they've got to do something quickly because there's
- 6:34Speaker 4: no runway here.
- 6:36Speaker 1: The first half of the season, obviously, played at all-star level.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Maybe it was even on some MVP short lists at
- 6:42Speaker 1: times during that stretch. But I think as the front
- 6:45Speaker 1: office projected for this playoff push they wanted to make
- 6:49Speaker 1: in the second half or to try to add to
- 6:51Speaker 1: the team, He was at the top of the list
- 6:53Speaker 1: of sort of offensive players who were pushing them towards
- 6:56Speaker 1: that decision. With him out, that's certainly a huge blow. Obviously,
- 7:01Speaker 1: we've talked about his struggles and other struggles throughout the
- 7:04Speaker 1: lineup on recent shows. It's only going to raise the volume, Dan,
- 7:09Speaker 1: on your favorite subject of whether or not it's Walker Jenkins' time. Jenkins,
- 7:14Speaker 1: the Twins' top prospect in St. Paul, continues to To
- 7:18Speaker 1: tear it up down there. And if you take a
- 7:20Speaker 1: look now, here's where we're at with the Twins outfield.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Byron Buxton left the game. We obviously don't know, to
- 7:25Speaker 1: Tyler's point, to Dan's point, if he's going to be
- 7:27Speaker 1: out extended time or what. But that's where we're at
- 7:30Speaker 1: right now. Austin Martin's still on the IL. Trevor Larnik
- 7:33Speaker 1: has really been struggling throughout August. Alan Roden, Luke Kieschel
- 7:36Speaker 1: doing just fine. But Jenkins down there tearing it up
- 7:39Speaker 1: in AAA. And fans will certainly be wondering if he
- 7:42Speaker 1: gets the call. We don't know if it's... jenkins's health
- 7:47Speaker 1: if it's if there's some concerns about his play still
- 7:49Speaker 1: that the team has or if it's a lack of
- 7:52Speaker 1: desire to potentially have him on the 40-man roster heading
- 7:55Speaker 1: into what sure seems like a looming lockout dan but
- 7:59Speaker 1: the twins if buxton can't play are going to have
- 8:01Speaker 1: to do something and obviously his name is going to
- 8:03Speaker 1: be at the top of everyone's list.
- 8:06Speaker 2: It is uh by the way um iron bucks and
- 8:10Speaker 2: 477 ops since the all-star break.
- 8:13Speaker 3: In 18 games yeah so it's, it has not worked
- 8:18Speaker 3: so far.
- 8:18Speaker 2: And like Monday was a good sign, but then like
- 8:21Speaker 2: you said, to come back Tuesday and go over three,
- 8:23Speaker 2: three strikeouts and leave with the injury, uh, certainly leaves questions,
- 8:27Speaker 2: but Hey, Walker Jenkins did not Homer last night.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Yes.
- 8:32Speaker 5: I know.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I was hoping it would have been perfect.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Um, yeah, he's been, he's been incredible, um, that at
- 8:41Speaker 2: AAA and, and the, the calls for him, to get
- 8:45Speaker 2: here will continue to be loud as they should be.
- 8:48Speaker 3: He's a true talent.
- 8:50Speaker 2: He's like, depending on where you look, top 20, maybe
- 8:55Speaker 2: even top 15 prospect in one or two locations. And like,
- 9:01Speaker 2: he's a five tool guy and he's finally hitting for power.
- 9:04Speaker 2: So you can understand why people want to see him.
- 9:08Speaker 2: I don't, I don't know what, what will be the case.
- 9:12Speaker 2: I mean, I would think if Byron gets hurt that,
- 9:15Speaker 2: He's the guy, but I don't know that for certain
- 9:18Speaker 2: at all. I don't think that it's possible he'll be
- 9:22Speaker 2: here today or tonight for the finale, but I don't
- 9:26Speaker 2: think that was going to be the case. It just
- 9:27Speaker 2: didn't seem that way. Post-game last night, things do change
- 9:30Speaker 2: over the course of the night, but they were going
- 9:32Speaker 2: to see how Byron was doing before they made a decision.
- 9:37Speaker 2: And I didn't get the sense they were– I mean,
- 9:42Speaker 2: they want Byron to be the guy and– Like, it's
- 9:46Speaker 2: all very tricky and it's all something that I'm really
- 9:50Speaker 2: glad is above my pay grade. But, I mean, Walker
- 9:53Speaker 2: Jenkins certainly has done what he needs to do to
- 9:56Speaker 2: be here.
- 9:57Speaker 3: And, you know, it's hard. challenging because at.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Their best, the twins have Byron Buxton going full strength
- 10:06Speaker 2: and Byron Buxton has not really been that since he's
- 10:09Speaker 2: come back after the all-star game. I know there was
- 10:11Speaker 2: hope that he'd come back and yet, you know, going
- 10:16Speaker 2: forward without their two All-Stars has been very, very troubling.
- 10:20Speaker 2: We know Joe Ryan is going to throw a live
- 10:23Speaker 2: bullpen today, but the Twins have gotten 939 ERA out
- 10:28Speaker 2: of Joe Ryan and three post-All-Star game starts and Byron
- 10:32Speaker 2: Buxton with a 477 OPS. This team is not built around,
- 10:37Speaker 2: they need steady contributions from everyone. You know, we've seen
- 10:41Speaker 2: the rest of the offense has not been very good
- 10:42Speaker 2: in August. So, This is just all kind of catching
- 10:46Speaker 2: up to them. They've been doing Yeoman's job of hanging
- 10:51Speaker 2: around and doing what they can to stay in this.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Yeoman? That's how you pronounce that? I don't know.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Isn't that what it is?
- 10:58Speaker 1: I thought it was Yeoman, but you might be right. Okay, whatever.
- 11:02Speaker 3: You know what, Zach?
- 11:04Speaker 1: You were right.
- 11:05Speaker 3: It's 8.30 in the morning.
- 11:06Speaker 2: I got home late last night.
- 11:09Speaker 3: I don't care. I don't care. It was a late
- 11:12Speaker 3: night at the ballpark. So much fun to cover stuff
- 11:17Speaker 3: at the ballpark, the way it went, especially like a
- 11:19Speaker 3: seventh inning injury. Oh, it was, yeah.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Anyways, I'm tired. It's yeoman's work. They've been doing a
- 11:27Speaker 2: great job of hanging around, but they're thin. The roster's
- 11:31Speaker 2: always been thin. We've known this all year, and it's
- 11:33Speaker 2: catching up to them right now. They're three out in
- 11:36Speaker 2: the wild card, and they're thin or getting thinner at
- 11:40Speaker 2: a time when Derek Shelton said yesterday it's a sprint
- 11:44Speaker 2: after today, and they can't overlook the athletics because the athletics'
- 11:48Speaker 2: two best starters are going Tuesday and Wednesday, but you
- 11:52Speaker 2: can't overlook them, and yet you have 15 coming up
- 11:55Speaker 2: against Chicago, Detroit, Chicago, Detroit, and Cleveland.
- 12:00Speaker 1: So.
- 12:01Speaker 2: It's a tough time to beat then, and certainly Walker
- 12:04Speaker 2: Jenkins would make sense to me to be on this roster.
- 12:07Speaker 3: I don't know that that's going to happen or not, though.

- 12:22Speaker 1: Jenkins and the rest from the first two games in
- 12:25Speaker 1: Sacramento right after this.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Bella.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Bella, Bella, where?
- 12:34Speaker 6: I don't know where Bella is, but I know how
- 12:36Speaker 6: to take care of my pup.

- 13:32Speaker 1: Confirmed. It is Yeoman. Looked it up just to be
- 13:35Speaker 1: sure we know.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Is that what I heard?
- 13:38Speaker 3: Appreciate that.
- 13:40Speaker 5: Webster's Merriam online.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Yes, yes, exactly. Dan, you were getting at a point
- 13:47Speaker 1: I wanted to make too about, you know, again, so
- 13:50Speaker 1: much of the stuff that was true in the first
- 13:51Speaker 1: half of the season has not been true in the
- 13:53Speaker 1: second half. Joe Ryan, has not been locked down, reliable.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Byron Buxton has had his injury issues and performance problems.
- 14:02Speaker 1: There's been others on the list too. In a world
- 14:06Speaker 1: where this second half is going a little bit better,
- 14:09Speaker 1: but the Twins were still having some of these issues,
- 14:11Speaker 1: especially in the outfield, maybe it makes more sense to
- 14:15Speaker 1: bring up Walker Jenkins right now. But if I'm the
- 14:19Speaker 1: front office, I'm looking at this right now. Okay, we're
- 14:21Speaker 1: three games back. We can't hit against the A's, gauge
- 14:25Speaker 1: jump perhaps a star on the rise and was lights
- 14:28Speaker 1: out on Tuesday, it does happen. But you're going to
- 14:32Speaker 1: call them up when you're five games under. 500, three
- 14:35Speaker 1: games out in the wild card, maybe have them pinned
- 14:38Speaker 1: into the 40-man roster in the lockout, Tyler. There's a
- 14:40Speaker 1: lot of considerations here, and I certainly wouldn't be surprised
- 14:44Speaker 1: if they continue to not do it.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, we've talked a lot about the opportunity
- 14:50Speaker 4: being available, and I think this is one moment where
- 14:55Speaker 4: This is a door, unfortunately, that could be opening to
- 14:59Speaker 4: get him, no matter what, like, here's 25 games.
- 15:03Speaker 5: You're going to play every day. Go get them.
- 15:06Speaker 4: And, you know, you're three games out. If Jenkins comes
- 15:11Speaker 4: up and tears the cover off the baseball, does he
- 15:14Speaker 4: help you take over that lead?
- 15:16Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 15:18Speaker 4: If he doesn't, he gets to be up there in
- 15:21Speaker 4: a playoff race, where games matter, get the full experience
- 15:24Speaker 4: of Major League Baseball in September, pushing for something important,
- 15:28Speaker 4: and that makes them that much more ready for whenever
- 15:31Speaker 4: next season comes, assuming they even play. But I think
- 15:36Speaker 4: at this point, especially with the way the season's gone
- 15:40Speaker 4: with Polads and company doing what they've done and trying
- 15:45Speaker 4: to get fans excited and get people ready, I think
- 15:48Speaker 4: for me it's a layup of a move that regardless,
- 15:51Speaker 4: because Walker Jenkins is going to be a big leaguer.
- 15:54Speaker 4: There's new things in place with the past CBA that
- 15:57Speaker 4: will help the twins. If he shows up and he's
- 16:01Speaker 4: a top five MVP finisher or he's a top rookie player,
- 16:04Speaker 4: there's incentives in place to call up these guys now.
- 16:08Speaker 4: I think this is, depending on what Byron says today,
- 16:12Speaker 4: what comes out of it. For me personally, if it's
- 16:16Speaker 4: a window where he's got free reign of center field
- 16:20Speaker 4: for the next month.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:21Speaker 5: Go for it.
- 16:22Speaker 4: You know, if Buck's healthy, all right, plug him in,
- 16:25Speaker 4: slide Jenkins over, whatever you want to do. But, like,
- 16:28Speaker 4: if he stays hot like he is right now and
- 16:31Speaker 4: he's up there on that roster, you're going to win
- 16:34Speaker 4: baseball games. It's just as simple as that. And it's
- 16:36Speaker 4: a spark. It's inspiring. It's your top guy. It's your
- 16:40Speaker 4: best guy. It's all the things. Like, it's hard for
- 16:43Speaker 4: me to see why not. You know, it's also an opportunity.
- 16:46Speaker 4: You didn't see yourself being here. you're three games out
- 16:48Speaker 4: of a playoff spot. What else do you need?
- 16:54Speaker 1: It would fit the messaging from the trade deadline, right?
- 16:57Speaker 1: The team wasn't fantastic then either, and they didn't want
- 17:03Speaker 1: to tear down a team that was surprisingly competitive, still
- 17:06Speaker 1: not great, but surprisingly competitive. They're not out of it,
- 17:10Speaker 1: and if you want to continue to show faith in
- 17:12Speaker 1: the clubhouse, it seems at some point with enough struggles,
- 17:16Speaker 1: enough injuries, I agree. If you're not going to do it,
- 17:20Speaker 1: it's sort of punting on your last big lever that
- 17:22Speaker 1: you can pull to make a change. However, we also
- 17:26Speaker 1: want to hear from you. Our next show will be tomorrow, Thursday,
- 17:29Speaker 1: after the A series before the weekend with the White Sox.
- 17:33Speaker 1: And we'd like to know one question from you. Besides
- 17:38Speaker 1: calling up Walker Jenkins, what's one change you make? We
- 17:41Speaker 1: know you want Walker Jenkins, but besides that, what's one
- 17:44Speaker 1: change you would make? If you were in charge to
- 17:46Speaker 1: give the Twins team a spark, you can leave your
- 17:49Speaker 1: ideas in the comments on our YouTube page, or you
- 17:52Speaker 1: can let us know on X. Our handles are there,
- 17:57Speaker 1: at DanHayesMLB, at TheDoof13, that's TheDoof13 if you're listening, and
- 18:03Speaker 1: at ZP Athletic. It looks like Z Pathetic, but there
- 18:06Speaker 1: is an L in there, ZP Athletic. Poor choice by
- 18:11Speaker 1: my part, but I'm just sticking with it. Anyway, what
- 18:15Speaker 1: else from these two games? The Twins, as we mentioned,
- 18:17Speaker 1: have slipped three games back now in the wildcard. The
- 18:20Speaker 1: Guardians can't lose. All of a sudden, they've won six
- 18:22Speaker 1: straight and are a game over. 500, still chasing the
- 18:26Speaker 1: White Sox in the Central Division. Twins are five and
- 18:29Speaker 1: a half behind. Chicago will have a chance to do
- 18:32Speaker 1: something about that directly in pretty short order here. But
- 18:36Speaker 1: let's talk about something positive to break this string of
- 18:41Speaker 1: doom and gloom. Taj Bradley, first immaculate inning in Minnesota
- 18:45Speaker 1: Twins history, or at least you said it apparently today
- 18:48Speaker 1: in your story, Dan. Is there some... Right. We don't
- 18:51Speaker 1: have records to a certain point?
- 18:54Speaker 3: Correct.
- 18:57Speaker 2: There were like 12 guys that have won in three
- 19:00Speaker 2: strikeouts in Twins history before this.
- 19:03Speaker 3: And the database is inaccurate.
- 19:07Speaker 2: They couldn't say it with 100% certainty, but they believe
- 19:11Speaker 2: it is, but.
- 19:12Speaker 3: They just can't confirm it. And like the MLB film room,
- 19:17Speaker 3: you can't go back and watch those games. They're just
- 19:20Speaker 3: not available.
- 19:20Speaker 5: It's like Babe Ruth's conspiracy.
- 19:23Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 19:26Speaker 2: But as far as MLB goes, MLB lists this as
- 19:30Speaker 2: the Twins' first one. But even they couldn't confirm it.
- 19:34Speaker 2: MLB had two of their people looking into it.
- 19:37Speaker 3: But it doesn't matter.
- 19:37Speaker 2: It was a fantastic inning. And Todd Bradley last night
- 19:42Speaker 2: was dotting everything. It's weird to say that, give up
- 19:46Speaker 2: four runs. He made about three mistakes. Oakland seemed to
- 19:50Speaker 2: hit all three of them, but he was, you know,
- 19:54Speaker 2: I liked, I liked the Victor Caratini line. Cause I
- 19:57Speaker 2: talked to him afterwards. And, and he said, basically like
- 20:02Speaker 2: he had one inning, like, he's like, it's weird to
- 20:04Speaker 2: say some, I'm paraphrasing them, but he's like, it's weird
- 20:07Speaker 2: to say, a.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Guy that gave up four runs was really, really good.
- 20:11Speaker 2: But he was like, he was executing everything. He was
- 20:14Speaker 2: ahead of everybody. You know, he got chase pitches. He got,
- 20:17Speaker 2: he got looking like calls looking.
- 20:20Speaker 3: Um, everything that you could do, want to do. He did.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Um, and, and I said, so were you aware that
- 20:27Speaker 2: the immaculate inning, uh.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Was in play?
- 20:30Speaker 2: And he said, that's why I called a fastball on
- 20:33Speaker 2: the last one. He's like, yeah, that's why I called
- 20:35Speaker 2: fastball on the last one.
- 20:36Speaker 3: Best pitch.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Screw it.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Screw it. He knew what he was going to get,
- 20:45Speaker 2: and he got 100 miles an hour. They're 99.8 at
- 20:48Speaker 2: the top of the zone and got Bolte looking to
- 20:52Speaker 2: end that immaculate inning. I mean, it was a great mix.
- 20:56Speaker 2: I think there were four swings and misses in the
- 20:59Speaker 2: inning and five called strikes, and that was representative of
- 21:05Speaker 2: the whole night. I think he ended it with 18
- 21:06Speaker 2: swings and misses. But he was just on the zone.
- 21:10Speaker 2: It was a very pretty performance. He left the cutter
- 21:13Speaker 2: up in the second inning.
- 21:16Speaker 3: You're supposed to be spin down to that guy. And
- 21:19Speaker 3: he left it up and in.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Nitro.
- 21:22Speaker 3: Two-run homer.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:23Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 21:25Speaker 3: But it looked like what Taj Bradley is supposed to
- 21:28Speaker 3: look like.
- 21:30Speaker 1: You mentioned he was throwing dots, Dan. Here's a look
- 21:34Speaker 1: at the three pitches to the last batter, Bolte, of
- 21:36Speaker 1: the inning. I mean, this is insane. If you're listening,
- 21:41Speaker 1: it's a screenshot of each of the three pitches, and
- 21:44Speaker 1: they are all scraping the edges of the zone. The
- 21:47Speaker 1: first one was a cutter just diving down and in
- 21:51Speaker 1: that somehow barely caught both the bottom and inside corners.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Second one was a splitter that was outside the entire
- 22:00Speaker 1: time and then just ducked back and clipped the line
- 22:03Speaker 1: on the outside corner. And then the third one was
- 22:05Speaker 1: that fastball that Dan mentioned. I I was surprised that
- 22:08Speaker 1: Bolte didn't challenge any of those. They still had two challenges,
- 22:11Speaker 1: but also I think they were all strengths. They were
- 22:13Speaker 1: just so good.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it was not going to– and the ump did
- 22:17Speaker 2: not have the– Jim Wolfe missed.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Like there was– he was a little off. There was
- 22:23Speaker 3: not the best zone.
- 22:24Speaker 5: Yeah, his zone was interesting. A little low.
- 22:27Speaker 3: You know what I don't like is the late call,
- 22:30Speaker 3: the delayed call.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Like– that's uh frustrating i imagine to both batters and
- 22:37Speaker 2: to pitchers because it's the i'm gonna do this i'm
- 22:41Speaker 2: gonna do this now like he he gives he gives
- 22:45Speaker 2: a two second pause to where you're like wait is
- 22:48Speaker 2: that a strike and he makes you think about it
- 22:50Speaker 2: and then he's like yeah strike i i that uh
- 22:53Speaker 2: that would be frustrating.
- 22:55Speaker 4: It was great to hear uh they had pete he
- 22:59Speaker 4: actually had saw two different interviews during the two games. Uh,
- 23:02Speaker 4: I think Zebby and then Taj, but he was talking
- 23:04Speaker 4: about Taj yesterday at the, what we had been talking
- 23:06Speaker 4: about was this first inning issues at times. And he said,
- 23:10Speaker 4: they've like talked about it and got them to finish
- 23:13Speaker 4: up those warmups pregame. Like, Hey man, let's get on
- 23:16Speaker 4: the throttle here for these last 15. Kind of like
- 23:18Speaker 4: we talked about, uh, you know, get more game, like
- 23:21Speaker 4: get a little more emphasis, you know, get the adrenaline
- 23:24Speaker 4: going somewhat, you know, and he's, it seems he's kind
- 23:28Speaker 4: of hit a new, you know, wave of it and,
- 23:30Speaker 4: and move, moved on because he was other than the, like,
- 23:34Speaker 4: like we said, he made a couple of mistakes, but
- 23:36Speaker 4: it wasn't spraying the ball.
- 23:37Speaker 5: It wasn't, you know, like what's happening out here.
- 23:40Speaker 4: It was just one mistake here, one mistake there to
- 23:42Speaker 4: a big league hitter, but he was absolutely dialed in
- 23:46Speaker 4: from pitch one.
- 23:46Speaker 1: It seemed.
- 23:47Speaker 5: And, you know, he, I mean, it's, it's incredible.
- 23:49Speaker 4: This get these guys now that are just, he can
- 23:51Speaker 4: throw 99 for a hundred pitches and it's just, he
- 23:54Speaker 4: doesn't even seem like he's breaking a sweat at times.
- 23:56Speaker 5: It's been, he and.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Zebby, the last two days, like I was watching those games,
- 24:00Speaker 4: just their, their execution, you know, the one on the
- 24:03Speaker 4: curve ball, Jeffers, like called for Zebby, like, Hey man,
- 24:06Speaker 4: rip it down. And you saw him just hammer that thing.
- 24:09Speaker 4: Like it was, it was fun. The last two days
- 24:11Speaker 4: starting pitching has been a lot of fun to watch.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Shout out also to Corey Provis, who is all over
- 24:18Speaker 1: that immaculate inning and like setting up the stakes for
- 24:20Speaker 1: it on the, on the broadcast. Like some people think
- 24:22Speaker 1: broadcasters should not, you know, be jinxing no hitters and
- 24:25Speaker 1: things like that. But, If you're not paying super close attention,
- 24:29Speaker 1: you could totally miss that as a fan.
- 24:32Speaker 5: Oh, without a doubt.
- 24:33Speaker 1: And so to be able to actually build it up
- 24:36Speaker 1: and make me turn my head towards the screen to
- 24:38Speaker 1: watch the end of that inning was super cool. And
- 24:42Speaker 1: Zebby Matthews. Wait, wait.
- 24:43Speaker 3: Let me just– hang on.
- 24:45Speaker 2: I want to actually relay my own experience on that.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Because fans are watching it and Corey is building it up.
- 24:51Speaker 2: And I'm not watching the broadcast. I'm watching the game
- 24:54Speaker 2: from the booth. And I put down some tweet and like,
- 24:58Speaker 2: it took a second for me to actually realize it
- 25:00Speaker 2: happened because I'm not listening to somebody else.
- 25:03Speaker 3: Tell me this.
- 25:03Speaker 2: And the, the press box, I'm the only person in this,
- 25:07Speaker 2: this visiting press boxes. It's not a great setup, but
- 25:11Speaker 2: somebody immediately, I put like, I put down a stat
- 25:14Speaker 2: and I did not put those in Maculane. So I
- 25:17Speaker 2: got a snarky response, like nothing about the immaculate ending.
- 25:20Speaker 2: I'm like, it took a second to actually realize.
- 25:23Speaker 3: What had happened.
- 25:25Speaker 5: Do your job, Dan.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:31Speaker 3: It's so funny because they creep up on you so quick.
- 25:35Speaker 3: But that's the second one this year.
- 25:38Speaker 2: It is. It is. It's the second one this year
- 25:41Speaker 2: that they've been involved in. Gavin Williams got one against them.
- 25:45Speaker 2: I believe it was like July 23rd.
- 25:47Speaker 3: And they had one against them two years ago.
- 25:50Speaker 2: It was Michael Kopech. That was right when he... like
- 25:55Speaker 2: became a badass reliever.
- 25:57Speaker 3: And like a week later, he.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Got traded to the Dodgers. Um, they were at the
- 26:00Speaker 2: white socks and like July 24th. And he finally listened
- 26:04Speaker 2: to the pitching group about pitch mix and had a
- 26:07Speaker 2: nine pitch. Just there's so much fun when they happen
- 26:10Speaker 2: like that. Uh, they, they're because it's the picture at
- 26:14Speaker 2: their nastiest, everything is going as well as it can.
- 26:18Speaker 2: And the batters have zero shot. I mean, it is,
- 26:21Speaker 2: it's overwhelming and it's so fast. So, I apologize that
- 26:25Speaker 2: I was not Corey Provost and dialed in the way.
- 26:29Speaker 3: So anyways, time to move on.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Just in case there's any confused listeners, Immaculate Ending is
- 26:35Speaker 1: three strikeouts on exactly nine pitches, meaning every pitch, a strike.
- 26:40Speaker 1: And it's rare. And it's hard to notice in the
- 26:42Speaker 1: moment sometimes unless you're Corey Provost.
- 26:44Speaker 6: I guess.
- 26:45Speaker 1: But good job, Corey. We'll be right back. Some more
- 26:47Speaker 1: thoughts from the game and we'll wrap it up right
- 26:50Speaker 1: after this.
- 26:55Speaker 6: One of the things that I wasn't very good at? Well,
- 26:57Speaker 6: it's playing Major League Baseball. One of the things that
- 27:00Speaker 6: I'm really good at is sweating. Even now, when I'm
- 27:03Speaker 6: not playing, I need hydration. I need to make sure
- 27:07Speaker 6: it's convenient. That's why I choose Quince.
- 27:11Speaker 7: Yep, Quince electrolyte stick packs to the rescue, Kratts. They

- 27:48Speaker 7: product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent
- 27:51Speaker 7: any disease.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Monday's game was much more fun for the Twins, except
- 27:58Speaker 1: for Yoandris Gomez, which we maybe will mention that too,
- 28:00Speaker 1: but a 9-6 win for Minnesota in that one. It
- 28:05Speaker 1: was 9-2 going in the ninth and well in hand
- 28:08Speaker 1: before Gomez ran into a little bit of trouble in
- 28:10Speaker 1: his first outing in about a week, but uh, Zeddy Matthews,
- 28:14Speaker 1: his second straight strong start, Dan, after a rough stretch,
- 28:17Speaker 1: he has a one, four, two ERA and 12 and
- 28:19Speaker 1: two thirds innings over his last two against Atlanta and
- 28:22Speaker 1: the A's got to feel good for him.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:26Speaker 3: And I think it even goes back further.
- 28:27Speaker 2: It's about six starts where he's got one blow up
- 28:30Speaker 2: in there, but the other five were really very solid or,
- 28:34Speaker 2: or better performances. Twins are five and one in those games.
- 28:37Speaker 2: He's got three 74 ERA in that, that span, even
- 28:40Speaker 2: with the blow up, um, And what I think stood
- 28:44Speaker 2: out to me on Monday was he had swings and
- 28:49Speaker 2: misses three whiffs on six of his pitches, like to
- 28:55Speaker 2: go fastball, curveball, slider, like everything. All six pitches were
- 28:59Speaker 2: dialed in to the point where he can get three
- 29:01Speaker 2: swings and misses out of each of them. He got
- 29:03Speaker 2: eight out of the slider. There's been work on that
- 29:06Speaker 2: to get depth on it. They recognized the slider was
- 29:10Speaker 2: an issue after he got kind of, crushed at Wrigley
- 29:13Speaker 2: to start the second half, and Zebby's starting to show
- 29:16Speaker 2: some consistency, and you see it. If he can ever
- 29:21Speaker 2: eliminate the big blow-up game, he can push forward, but
- 29:25Speaker 2: even where he is, he's a solid back-end starter right now.
- 29:29Speaker 3: If he can keep this consistency going. I think he's had.
- 29:34Speaker 2: A little bit of a learning experience, and it's something
- 29:37Speaker 2: that doesn't shock me that it takes a little while
- 29:39Speaker 2: to get there because 24 was a blur for him.
- 29:41Speaker 3: He got to the majors and you're just like thrilled
- 29:44Speaker 3: to be.
- 29:44Speaker 2: In the majors after starting the year at A ball
- 29:49Speaker 2: and 25 was disappointment.
- 29:51Speaker 3: I think we've seen the growing and the learning coming now.
- 29:55Speaker 2: If this trend continues, that's a great sign for them
- 29:58Speaker 2: because Zebby has really good stuff.
- 30:01Speaker 3: Getting swing and miss was always the key. The other night,
- 30:05Speaker 3: he had 23 swings and misses. That's a career high
- 30:10Speaker 3: for him out of 105 pitches. He threw 70 strikes.
- 30:13Speaker 3: He was just all over the zone.
- 30:15Speaker 2: And seemed to make pitches every time he needed to.
- 30:20Speaker 2: Early on, he got some traffic. He got ground balls
- 30:23Speaker 2: that could have been double plays. I think he got
- 30:25Speaker 2: two double plays. It's funny that the one run he
- 30:27Speaker 2: gave up, he put his glove down. Kaelin Culpepper was
- 30:30Speaker 2: right behind him. Would have made the play and instead
- 30:33Speaker 2: of kind of scooted off towards left center and Culpepper
- 30:37Speaker 2: tried to track it down, but really had no shot.
- 30:39Speaker 3: But, you know, it's looked good. It's looked encouraging. I
- 30:45Speaker 3: really like what.
- 30:45Speaker 2: I've seen and like what I've heard too. And a
- 30:48Speaker 2: lot of it seems to have stemmed from he's gotten,
- 30:51Speaker 2: they showed on the broadcast every time that toe, uh,
- 30:55Speaker 2: the protective toe on his cleat has apparently helped him
- 30:59Speaker 2: with the, the blister slash slash laceration issue.
- 31:03Speaker 3: That is a lot. That's a mouthful.
- 31:06Speaker 5: Uh, slash laceration toe doping.
- 31:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:10Speaker 1: It sounds like, uh, Tyler, the twins have stayed afloat
- 31:16Speaker 1: because of, players like Zebby, who, you know, he was
- 31:20Speaker 1: sent down after the trade deadline to make room for
- 31:22Speaker 1: the new additions and then quickly called back and has
- 31:25Speaker 1: been pretty rock solid. As Dan mentioned, I picked out
- 31:28Speaker 1: the last two starts, but it has been going back
- 31:30Speaker 1: six starts now that he's been very sharp and the
- 31:33Speaker 1: Twins have needed it now more than ever with Joe
- 31:35Speaker 1: Ryan out and with some other struggles.
- 31:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:38Speaker 4: And to what I was mentioning earlier about Pete and
- 31:41Speaker 4: his breakdown, they were talking about, you know, ground ball
- 31:44Speaker 4: rates have kind of started to trend upwards. I think
- 31:47Speaker 4: for the staff as a whole, but I think Zebby
- 31:49Speaker 4: in particular as well. Part of that's figuring out your
- 31:53Speaker 4: pitch mix and how things work. Like Dan said, they've
- 31:56Speaker 4: been working on the slider to get it a little
- 31:57Speaker 4: more depth, things like that. Pitching is such a, with
- 32:02Speaker 4: the times, you've got to just constantly adapt.
- 32:05Speaker 5: As hitters have figured out now, they've got.
- 32:07Speaker 4: Machines that throw 100 miles an hour at the top
- 32:09Speaker 4: of the zone, top rail.
- 32:11Speaker 5: Guys can hit that. If you can snipe a guy
- 32:14Speaker 5: with a.
- 32:14Speaker 4: Heater, I used to call it the freeze heater, When
- 32:17Speaker 4: you've got a lot of breaking balls, a lot of
- 32:18Speaker 4: good off-speed, things like that, and Zebby's fastball, to me,
- 32:22Speaker 4: even watching it on TV, it's kind of sneaky. He's
- 32:24Speaker 4: not our super twitchy guy, and he gets it up
- 32:28Speaker 4: there 96, 97 at times. He's got plenty of fastball
- 32:31Speaker 4: with his pitch to really be dominant, and you can
- 32:35Speaker 4: tell he's figuring out how to use things. I'm sure
- 32:37Speaker 4: Jeffers and Caratini have helped him a lot as well.
- 32:40Speaker 4: Like Dan said, when you're a young guy just thrown
- 32:42Speaker 4: in the big leagues, you've kind of got to figure
- 32:45Speaker 4: out if your stuff works or not and then go
- 32:47Speaker 4: from there. And he's had that opportunity and now he's
- 32:50Speaker 4: kind of getting to settle in a bit and really
- 32:53Speaker 4: learn about himself as a big leaguer. And, you know,
- 32:56Speaker 4: like you said, he's been dependable. He's, you know, he's
- 32:58Speaker 4: not the top end guy. He's not your ace, whatever
- 33:01Speaker 4: he could be in a year or two, you never know.
- 33:03Speaker 4: But it's one, it's been great to watch him learn
- 33:06Speaker 4: and figure it out and become a guy that they
- 33:08Speaker 4: can depend on, you know, to get through five or
- 33:10Speaker 4: six innings, quality starts here and there. um you know
- 33:13Speaker 4: i mean giving up one run against any big league
- 33:15Speaker 4: team is is a win and he's he's been able
- 33:18Speaker 4: to do that and uh it's it's like i said
- 33:21Speaker 4: it's been fun to watch him figure it out as
- 33:23Speaker 4: as a guy who pitched on 100 loss team and
- 33:26Speaker 4: made 26 starts kind of flying blind like it's great
- 33:29Speaker 4: to see a guy get up there and a team
- 33:31Speaker 4: that matters and he's gonna end up pitching games that
- 33:33Speaker 4: matter you know in the next couple weeks he's gonna
- 33:35Speaker 4: be a guy that is a leverage piece for them
- 33:38Speaker 4: and you know, he's going to get to put his
- 33:40Speaker 4: foot in the ground and create a good foundation for
- 33:42Speaker 4: himself heading into the next seasons and so on after that.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Also Monday, Kalen Culpepper, four-hit game, all singles. He also
- 33:53Speaker 1: got the Twins going really on Tuesday with his double
- 33:56Speaker 1: into the gap that scored Cody Clemons the first hint
- 34:00Speaker 1: of life against Gage Jump in that game, with all
- 34:03Speaker 1: due respect to Royce Lewis, who had the two hits prior,
- 34:06Speaker 1: one of them being a pop-up that somehow fell in.
- 34:09Speaker 1: But Culpepper, whew, pretty good start, hitting 435 in his
- 34:13Speaker 1: last six games, 333 overall. He's hit safely in 12
- 34:18Speaker 1: of his 15 games in the bigs. And I looked
- 34:20Speaker 1: it up, only six twins have a better batting average
- 34:24Speaker 1: in the first 15 games of their career. And it's
- 34:30Speaker 1: a list, guys. We've got Chris Parmelee, Jasmiel Pinto, Tim Tufel,
- 34:37Speaker 1: Kirby Puckett, Dave McCarty, fellow World Series hero to Kirby,
- 34:42Speaker 1: Gene Larkin, and then Kalen Culpepper, Luke Kieschel right behind.
- 34:45Speaker 1: That's with a minimum of 50 at-bats. If I don't
- 34:49Speaker 1: cherry-pick like that, there's a few other names on there
- 34:52Speaker 1: like Luis Uriahs and so forth. But heck of a
- 34:55Speaker 1: start to Culpepper's career, at least offensively. And then finally,
- 35:00Speaker 1: before we go, Dan, did you have something to say there?
- 35:03Speaker 1: I'm sorry. Did I cut you off?
- 35:04Speaker 3: No, no, not at all. Not at all.
- 35:06Speaker 2: I'm good.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Before we go, old friend of the program, Matt Chernoff
- 35:09Speaker 1: was in the news again, guys.
- 35:11Speaker 5: Just a bit outside.
- 35:13Speaker 1: He threw the first pitch at the Atlanta Braves game
- 35:16Speaker 1: last night. Matt Chernoff, of course, the Atlanta radio host
- 35:19Speaker 1: who we got into a brief but delicious radio war with.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Here he was before the first pitch looking very confident,
- 35:27Speaker 1: kind of walking out to the mound, tossing the ball
- 35:29Speaker 1: in his hand, probably debating if he wants to go four-seam.
- 35:34Speaker 1: I don't know what his pitch mix is. And then
- 35:37Speaker 1: here's the after picture. That is high and either tight
- 35:43Speaker 1: or outside. Look at the mascot. The mascot is very
- 35:46Speaker 1: concerned about where that pitch ended up. At least he
- 35:51Speaker 1: didn't bounce it, I guess I'll say, guys. But here's
- 35:54Speaker 1: my challenge to the Minnesota Twins. Let's keep this bit going.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Pick one of the three of us. to throw out
- 36:01Speaker 1: the first pitch at a twins game and we'll see
- 36:04Speaker 1: if we can do better than sure enough. And I'm
- 36:06Speaker 1: going to just randomly choose Tyler, pick Tyler. Oh, um, I,
- 36:11Speaker 1: I don't know why I make that choice, but let's,
- 36:13Speaker 1: let's just do it and see. Yeah.
- 36:16Speaker 5: I agree with that.
- 36:17Speaker 2: You know, I miss, I miss a lot of home
- 36:19Speaker 2: games because I do more road games.
- 36:22Speaker 3: So I'm unreliable. And even though you're in the area,
- 36:26Speaker 3: you have two small children.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Yes.
- 36:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 36:29Speaker 1: So, right. You know, it's hard to get nights off.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Very accurate arm for two small children, yeah. Right, right.
- 36:36Speaker 1: Might be a conflict of interest for you too, Dan.
- 36:39Speaker 1: You know, maybe even for me, honestly. Yeah, correct.
- 36:42Speaker 5: Right, we work it for media.
- 36:43Speaker 4: Just give me a ramp up period so I can
- 36:46Speaker 4: make it like a tryout.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll give you a bullpen session beforehand. We'll figure
- 36:49Speaker 1: it out. There's a lot of things we can do there.
- 36:51Speaker 3: I mean, I can play catch and warm me up
- 36:54Speaker 3: on the field. If you want, I can play catch
- 36:57Speaker 3: and warm me up on the field.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Okay, there we go. I like this.
- 36:59Speaker 5: Good branding.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Thanks, everybody, for listening. We'll be back with you again.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Quick turnaround tomorrow morning. We'll recap this series for the Twins.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Really need this one tonight. The Twins do. And we'll
- 37:14Speaker 1: tee up the weekend in Chicago. And hopefully we'll answer
- 37:17Speaker 1: some of your ideas on how to give this team
- 37:19Speaker 1: a spark. Remember to reply in the comments with those.
- 37:22Speaker 1: If you like what you are hearing... Please toss us
- 37:26Speaker 1: a like, a subscribe, however you listen or follow along.
- 37:29Speaker 1: There's a QR code there on the screen if you're
- 37:31Speaker 1: watching on YouTube to make it super easy. We will
- 37:34Speaker 1: catch you next time. Thanks for listening. Bye-bye.
