- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome into the NFL Report. James Palmer, Steve Whites with you.
- 0:07Speaker 1: It's a Monday, but I think the Dolphins are still scoring. Steve,
- 0:11Speaker 1: we got a packed show for you today. We have
- 0:14Speaker 1: Leslie Fraser, the former defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills,
- 0:17Speaker 1: breaking down what happened, Devance Joseph and am never Broncos defense.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Also Omar Owiz, Tom Pellisaro, Jeff Chediaz with us every Monday.
- 0:25Speaker 1: We got a lot, Steve, and we still didn't even
- 0:27Speaker 1: mention that there's a lot going on in Kansas City
- 0:30Speaker 1: right now.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's not even on the field, JP.
- 0:34Speaker 3: I mean, look, every cutaway shot, every cutaway shot before
- 0:37Speaker 3: they actually cut away from the game, was.
- 0:40Speaker 2: If Taylor Swift.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Oh and Travis Kelsey right, Look, he's a Mama Kelsey,
- 0:45Speaker 3: so I guess the rumors are true he introduced her
- 0:47Speaker 3: to mama, or at least somebody did up in the suite.
- 0:50Speaker 3: But you know, I know the conversation is of Taylor
- 0:54Speaker 3: and of Trav. But JP, here's my take on this. Okay,
- 0:58Speaker 3: I'm not a big conspiracy theory guy, but oh okay,
- 1:02Speaker 3: this is Patrick's being the ultimate wing man and not
- 1:05Speaker 3: with the fact that he got Travis five of his
- 1:07Speaker 3: seven catches in the first half to get Taylor.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Up in arms like she was. But remember Patrick Mahomes was.
- 1:14Speaker 3: On a little show this summer called Quarterback, little Netflix
- 1:17Speaker 3: series that was really, really good. Well, I think he's
- 1:20Speaker 3: gonna now share and an executive producer credit with Peyton Manning,
- 1:25Speaker 3: and they're gonna have a spinoff called tight End, right,
- 1:27Speaker 3: and Travis Kelsey who is gonna be in it? And
- 1:31Speaker 3: Taylor Swift is there to get everybody and not just
- 1:34Speaker 3: a football fans.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I mean, am I off base here? Do you like
- 1:37Speaker 2: my theory that they're working on this? I like this.
- 1:41Speaker 2: I think this is what we're really going to play.
- 1:44Speaker 1: I like the conspiracy theory because also I'm not sure
- 1:47Speaker 1: how you introduced a woman to your mother within the
- 1:49Speaker 1: first week or two of dating her.
- 1:51Speaker 2: We don't know that. We don't know that, don't I don't.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Know what's happening. Listen before we move on, I also
- 1:56Speaker 1: say Kansas City is a hot spot for the Pittsburgh Steelers,
- 1:58Speaker 1: and I'm just happy that in new airport's been built
- 2:02Speaker 1: because I can can you imagine someone being being stranded
- 2:05Speaker 1: that long? I've spent some time at the old kCi Airport,
- 2:07Speaker 1: you know, just fighting for a cold flatbread at off
- 2:11Speaker 1: the vine or some stuff out of the vending machine.
- 2:14Speaker 1: But that's neither here nor there's Stave. Luckily they built
- 2:17Speaker 1: that new beautiful spot there in Kansas City. And one
- 2:20Speaker 1: of the guys that I used to play in Kansas City,
- 2:22Speaker 1: his name's Tyreek Hill, said a lot of things this,
- 2:24Speaker 1: you know, a couple off seasons when he went to Miami, Steve,
- 2:27Speaker 1: if you remember, maybe we should be remembering what Tyreek
- 2:30Speaker 1: Hill was saying about his quarterback to a tunguea bi lo,
- 2:32Speaker 1: how accurate he was, how much he thought of his
- 2:36Speaker 1: new quarterback. Because they put up seventy points on Sean
- 2:39Speaker 1: Payton and the Denver Broncos. That's a seven zero most
- 2:43Speaker 1: points since nineteen sixty six. Could have easily broken the
- 2:47Speaker 1: points and the yardage marks. But really let off the gas.
- 2:52Speaker 1: What's your initial take on Miami, because we will with
- 2:55Speaker 1: Leslie Frasier get to the Broncos side of things in
- 2:58Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, look, this is stunning, right, seventy points
- 3:03Speaker 3: in an NFL game, which spells a lot of things,
- 3:06Speaker 3: like your offense is running efficiently. You're just totally dominating
- 3:10Speaker 3: a team and also made question the effort of the
- 3:12Speaker 3: opposing team. Now we're just showing a play right here,
- 3:15Speaker 3: the shovel pass where two fakes a left handed no
- 3:17Speaker 3: looks at right handed. What people don't know the onely
- 3:20Speaker 3: thing TWA does left handed is throw. Everything else he
- 3:22Speaker 3: does is right handed, So that was kind of natural
- 3:24Speaker 3: to him right there.
- 3:26Speaker 2: But let me tell you something.
- 3:27Speaker 3: But if I'm Mike McDaniel heading into next year's game
- 3:30Speaker 3: with Buffalo, here's what I would do with this game
- 3:32Speaker 3: tape that was just absolute perfection. I would put it
- 3:36Speaker 3: in the archives and not let my team think that
- 3:39Speaker 3: they're anything interesting special going into Buffalo, because you might say, look,
- 3:44Speaker 3: our offense is so great, we're flying. Look at how
- 3:46Speaker 3: we ran all of these great plays you know outside
- 3:49Speaker 3: and things are working in the run game where Devon
- 3:52Speaker 3: a Chain and Raheem Mostert they combined for eight touchdowns in.
- 3:55Speaker 2: The run in pass game.
- 3:57Speaker 3: I would stash that and say, look, the week before
- 4:00Speaker 3: we had problems scoring against the New England Pagets, who
- 4:02Speaker 3: are in a division. It only gave us twenty four
- 4:05Speaker 3: and we had to work for those. Buffalo is going
- 4:07Speaker 3: to be the same way. So as good as we
- 4:10Speaker 3: may feel about hanging a record seventy points, good gosh
- 4:14Speaker 3: on the Broncos, I put it away for now and
- 4:18Speaker 3: save that for the postseason highlight tape.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Aren't you a buzzkill?
- 4:22Speaker 2: Like?
- 4:22Speaker 1: What did you do to you ever celebrate any of
- 4:24Speaker 1: your three sons accomplishments in any athletics or did you
- 4:28Speaker 1: just always go well, you know you could have done better?
- 4:31Speaker 1: Come on, listen. What I do look at this tape
- 4:34Speaker 1: and I look at what happened and watching almost all
- 4:36Speaker 1: of this game on Sunday, is we are seeing a really,
- 4:39Speaker 1: really good marriage between one of the most dynamic, innovative
- 4:44Speaker 1: play callers out there in Mike McDaniel, and a quarterback
- 4:47Speaker 1: that is able to operate it the way he wants
- 4:49Speaker 1: it to be operated. What we're seeing is the balls
- 4:51Speaker 1: out extremely quick. And the reason I bring that up, Steve,
- 4:54Speaker 1: is what Mike McDaniel does is he puts all of
- 4:57Speaker 1: these guys and positions to do what make sure they
- 5:00Speaker 1: play to their strengths and he hides their deficiencies. I
- 5:03Speaker 1: think that's the part that maybe stands out to me
- 5:05Speaker 1: the most is when maybe their biggest weakness as an
- 5:08Speaker 1: offense is pass protection is protecting Tua. What happens, We
- 5:12Speaker 1: have a bunch of guys that get open extremely quickly
- 5:15Speaker 1: and the balls out of his hand extremely quickly. Don't
- 5:17Speaker 1: quote me on these numbers, but I believe this season
- 5:20Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence is the only one that's gotten the football
- 5:23Speaker 1: out faster than Tua has this season. So I think
- 5:26Speaker 1: the other part Steve that jumps out of me is
- 5:28Speaker 1: they just kind of have started this marriage with one another.
- 5:32Speaker 1: This is their second season together and we're three games
- 5:35Speaker 1: in and it looks like they can almost do anything
- 5:38Speaker 1: because of the weapons that Tua has around him and
- 5:41Speaker 1: the balance.
- 5:42Speaker 3: That they have all right, but JP, we could see
- 5:44Speaker 3: that they could do almost anything. We know they played
- 5:46Speaker 3: well against the Chargers in the opener, but again think
- 5:49Speaker 3: back to New England.
- 5:50Speaker 2: They had to fight for all twenty.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Four of them and now that was a good game plan,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and I would think Buffalo would do something similar to that.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Take away the middle of the field, take away Tyreek.
- 6:00Speaker 1: We know what the routes too, likes to likes to
- 6:02Speaker 1: go towards right. You would think that's similar to what
- 6:05Speaker 1: Buffalo is gonna go do. Who took the ball away
- 6:07Speaker 1: a bunch in the on Sunday.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Correct, So again, that's what I'm saying.
- 6:10Speaker 3: And by the way, there are no participation trophies in
- 6:13Speaker 3: the White household.
- 6:14Speaker 2: You have to earn them.
- 6:15Speaker 3: I know kids would have got they would have gotten
- 6:17Speaker 3: a blue ribbon for seventy points.
- 6:19Speaker 2: But it's only week three. You don't win championships in September.
- 6:22Speaker 3: But yes, I would say, you know, well done by
- 6:25Speaker 3: the Dolphins, but save it for those reasons. There are
- 6:30Speaker 3: no Lombardi trophies. Hands it out in September.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Interesting, you got anything left on this other than we
- 6:36Speaker 1: still don't know how to pronounce a chain's name A chain.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Andrew Cecilian and I were on a draft show, and
- 6:42Speaker 3: Andrew asked him how to pronounce it. He said, a chain,
- 6:44Speaker 3: I know, Peter King and the confident.
- 6:45Speaker 2: He said, it's a chan.
- 6:47Speaker 1: But maybe now the.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Team is coming out, well, I mean maybe field, now
- 6:51Speaker 3: the team.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Is coming out. Okay, all right, unbelievable, unbelievab all right.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Let le's let's move on to uh a surprise team
- 6:58Speaker 1: getting a w in time?
- 7:00Speaker 3: Steve, Yeah, absolutely, that's the Indianapolis Colts, and that leads
- 7:06Speaker 3: an entire discussion right here JP about three first year
- 7:08Speaker 3: coaches getting dubbs, all upset dubs. And you look at
- 7:12Speaker 3: the Indianapolis Colts in this game, and remember last week
- 7:15Speaker 3: the last two shows we did. Boy, were we jock
- 7:18Speaker 3: riding the Baltimore Ravens and how great their offense was
- 7:21Speaker 3: and everything off? Yes, yeah, I mean, but look, I'm
- 7:24Speaker 3: not off It's one game. But the fact that Shane
- 7:27Speaker 3: Steichen has got so many things going and one this
- 7:31Speaker 3: defense is playing a lot better than I think anybody
- 7:34Speaker 3: expect him to play. Right, So they went there and
- 7:36Speaker 3: they really put the clamps down on this high flying
- 7:39Speaker 3: offense that we were talking about was going to be
- 7:40Speaker 3: so great. Yes, weather factored into it, but Gardner minshew also,
- 7:45Speaker 3: this is the second straight win by the Colts. He
- 7:47Speaker 3: comes in when Anthony Richardson, who's played well got hurt
- 7:50Speaker 3: last week, led them to victory, and then he comes
- 7:52Speaker 3: in here and moves the ball efficiently down the field
- 7:55Speaker 3: and doesn't turn it over on a day like this,
- 7:58Speaker 3: This is very important. So the Colts, they're a team
- 8:02Speaker 3: in this division that we did not see right now
- 8:05Speaker 3: getting off to this type of start JP. So props
- 8:08Speaker 3: to Saint Steiken and what he's doing in his first
- 8:11Speaker 3: year in Indy.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I think he deserves a ton of credit for what
- 8:14Speaker 1: he's doing. Look at what he had to deal with
- 8:16Speaker 1: before they even played a game. What did Chris Ballard,
- 8:18Speaker 1: their general manager, says, Steve It sucks. It all sucks.
- 8:21Speaker 1: It sucks from every angle. Chris Baller couldn't stop saying
- 8:24Speaker 1: sucks in the press conference with what Shane Styken had
- 8:26Speaker 1: to deal with with Jonathan Taylor. And it's not like
- 8:29Speaker 1: you know, it was just a distraction from that standpoint,
- 8:31Speaker 1: it's your best player on your team that he's still
- 8:35Speaker 1: coaching without right now and has been the distraction. They
- 8:38Speaker 1: can get Jonathan Taylor back after Week four to add
- 8:42Speaker 1: to this offense that rushed for one hundred and thirty
- 8:45Speaker 1: nine yards against the Ravens last on Sunday. You could
- 8:49Speaker 1: add Jonathan Taylor to this group. And I think the
- 8:53Speaker 1: job that he's done with Anthony Richardson so far now,
- 8:55Speaker 1: the issue is he hasn't finished the two games that
- 8:57Speaker 1: he started. It didn't play in this game because of
- 8:59Speaker 1: the concussion protocol. But I think you and I could
- 9:02Speaker 1: both agree that how few games he played at the
- 9:05Speaker 1: collegiate level. He looked beyond comfortable out there, and that
- 9:09Speaker 1: a lot has to do with how he was set
- 9:11Speaker 1: up to succeed by Shane Stike. And I think Shane's
- 9:13Speaker 1: done a tremendous job. They're leading the division now. The
- 9:17Speaker 1: other team that has a first year head coach in
- 9:20Speaker 1: Demiico Ryans in the Houston Texans. Dimiko got his first
- 9:24Speaker 1: win Steve over another AFC South team, the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Will get to Doug Pearson's Jaguars. But what do you
- 9:31Speaker 1: think about Demico and his first win and what we've
- 9:34Speaker 1: seen out of Houston.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Well, I mean, look a huge upset thirty seven to seventeen.
- 9:38Speaker 3: But what was so great about this win was it
- 9:42Speaker 3: was a complete team win. Right, You've have Bill Anderson
- 9:45Speaker 3: blocking a fuel goal. You've got your fullback taking eighty
- 9:49Speaker 3: five yard kick eighty five yard to the house. It
- 9:52Speaker 3: took him about seventeen seconds, right, but it was the
- 9:54Speaker 3: most beautiful, fast motion slow you should kick off return
- 9:57Speaker 3: ever to do that.
- 9:59Speaker 2: And then CJ.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Stroud comes out and plays really well. Our road game
- 10:02Speaker 3: plays really good circumstances. And I want to get this
- 10:05Speaker 3: over to you because you know, we know last week
- 10:06Speaker 3: Brian Robinson, the running back for the Washington Commanders, came
- 10:09Speaker 3: here and made you feel bad about Ohio State.
- 10:11Speaker 2: But CJ.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Stroud came in here off the big Buckeye victory over
- 10:16Speaker 3: Notre Dame and.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Has a fantastic game. And it's not just a fantastic
- 10:20Speaker 2: game JP, c J.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Stroud has played pretty well and his first three starts
- 10:25Speaker 3: to go with.
- 10:25Speaker 1: That pretty well. This is one of the best starts
- 10:29Speaker 1: we've ever seen from a quarterback in their first three
- 10:31Speaker 1: NFL starts. He's got over nine hundred yards. I think
- 10:33Speaker 1: that's third all time through a player's first three games.
- 10:36Speaker 1: He hasn't thrown interception yet, which is mar I think
- 10:38Speaker 1: he's got four touchdowns and also real quick back to
- 10:40Speaker 1: the buck Eys. You know he talked to after this
- 10:42Speaker 1: win on the phone from the locker room, Ryan Day,
- 10:45Speaker 1: head coach of the buck Guys. Him and Ryan were
- 10:47Speaker 1: chatting on the phone a little bit while he was
- 10:48Speaker 1: still in the locker room after this, after this win,
- 10:51Speaker 1: and I talked to some people down in Houston Monday morning,
- 10:53Speaker 1: and the two things that jump out of me most
- 10:55Speaker 1: Steve is this with Dimiko Ryans. They don't obviously realize
- 10:59Speaker 1: that that this thing is like off and running, we're
- 11:01Speaker 1: gonna get ten wins. But the foundation that they're laying,
- 11:04Speaker 1: and that's what you're mentioning with complimentary football, doing things
- 11:07Speaker 1: from every aspect of the three phases of football, they
- 11:10Speaker 1: do feel like players are buying in. I think that's huge,
- 11:13Speaker 1: even after an zer and two start. But the stuff
- 11:15Speaker 1: about Stroud that I was told was just, you know,
- 11:18Speaker 1: already for coaches to say Steve that he gives us
- 11:20Speaker 1: a chance in every game and this is his third game.
- 11:23Speaker 1: What jumps out to Tamiko Ryans the most is that
- 11:26Speaker 1: he gets better every week. He corrects his mistakes extremely quickly.
- 11:30Speaker 1: He told Albert Breer of SI or good buddied fella Buckey,
- 11:33Speaker 1: no big deal, that he really nobody on the team
- 11:36Speaker 1: studies harder than he does. He puts in more work
- 11:38Speaker 1: studying than anybody else. And I think what we've seen
- 11:41Speaker 1: from Stroud that stands out to me the most before
- 11:43Speaker 1: we get to Jacksonville. My last point on this is
- 11:45Speaker 1: he has already understood the importance of limiting negative plays,
- 11:51Speaker 1: and I think that's extremely big for a young quarterback
- 11:54Speaker 1: to understand early. Is that if I don't hurt my team.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Negative plays can come back to bite his very quickly.
- 12:00Speaker 1: And he hasn't thrown a pick yet. He's already learned
- 12:03Speaker 1: behind a shoddy offensive line how to get rid of
- 12:05Speaker 1: the football. The growth in that aspect, even with the
- 12:08Speaker 1: run game not being what they thought it would be,
- 12:09Speaker 1: so far early on him learning those things early on,
- 12:14Speaker 1: He's growing by leaps and bounds. It's been wild. Yeah,
- 12:16Speaker 1: you know, but I'm not surprised that's a Buckeye.
- 12:19Speaker 2: No, I'm sure you aren't.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Brian Robinson sens his best regards as well, so does
- 12:23Speaker 3: Lou Holtz.
- 12:25Speaker 2: But look coasting the two teams that we thought were
- 12:28Speaker 2: going to be leading this division at this point. Tennessee.
- 12:31Speaker 3: They get held under one hundred yards of offense by
- 12:33Speaker 3: the Browns this week. But the Jaguars, right, they were
- 12:36Speaker 3: the team.
- 12:38Speaker 2: And look, nobody's out of it in this division.
- 12:40Speaker 3: But we thought they would have a little mojo, right,
- 12:43Speaker 3: Calvin Ridley coming in, Trevor Lawrence, some of the moves
- 12:46Speaker 3: that they made to further bolster their team. JP They
- 12:49Speaker 3: are not playing good defensive football right now, and offensively
- 12:53Speaker 3: they still seem to have a lot of things to
- 12:56Speaker 3: work through in large part of the offensive line has
- 12:58Speaker 3: not played well. They just seem little disjointed. Doug Peterson, Yeah,
- 13:01Speaker 3: Doug Peterson came out and said, Hey, maybe.
- 13:03Speaker 2: They're just trying to live up to the hype too much.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Yeah, reading your press clippings does not comments you want
- 13:08Speaker 1: to come out of your head coach's mouth this early.
- 13:10Speaker 1: I thought they would come out of the gates, Gangbuster, Steve,
- 13:13Speaker 1: considering how they finished the regular season last year and
- 13:16Speaker 1: how excited they were for the start of this season
- 13:18Speaker 1: with the way that they played and coming so close
- 13:20Speaker 1: and arrowhead in that postseason game. I'm curious with everything
- 13:23Speaker 1: Doug Peters had set after the game and set on
- 13:25Speaker 1: Monday in terms of there was a lack of effort
- 13:28Speaker 1: at times, that there was more energy coming from the
- 13:31Speaker 1: Houston Texans that they're getting beat in the trenches. You
- 13:33Speaker 1: mentioned the offensive line. There's no pass rush there either
- 13:36Speaker 1: mentioned the offensive line issues for the Texans. C. J.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Stroud wasn't sacked once, and that's that's on the defensive line,
- 13:43Speaker 1: I think more so of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Before we
- 13:47Speaker 1: get to break, my last point would be this, Steve
- 13:49Speaker 1: that I think maybe the trip to London might be
- 13:53Speaker 1: best for them. In two weeks, They're gonna spend two
- 13:55Speaker 1: weeks over there play back to back games in London.
- 13:58Speaker 1: If there's issues with distractions, reading press clippings, things like that,
- 14:02Speaker 1: maybe going across the pond as they say.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Oh, you didn't do it, dude.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Come on, Nobody over there likes that phrase. Nobody over
- 14:13Speaker 1: there likes that phrase. Just to like you hear that,
- 14:15Speaker 1: Let you hear that. I'm gonna ask Tom if he
- 14:17Speaker 1: likes to use across the pond. Coming up, we got
- 14:19Speaker 1: Tom Pelis Sarah coming up after the break. He's gonna
- 14:21Speaker 1: give us a boatload of info. He was at the
- 14:23Speaker 1: game between the Chargers and Vikings. He's got tons of
- 14:26Speaker 1: things from that game. Also, Omar Rowiez was at that
- 14:28Speaker 1: stunner where the Cowboys went down to the Cardinals. Ward
- 14:31Speaker 1: of the NFL Report coming up, Back of.
- 14:43Speaker 3: The NFL Report and Jay Palmer and Iron now joined
- 14:46Speaker 3: by Tom Pella Serra, one third of the Insiders, which
- 14:49Speaker 3: you can catch daily on NFL Network and on NFL Plus.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Tom, thanks so much for joining us. You know you
- 14:55Speaker 2: got a busy day. Could you catch us up?
- 14:57Speaker 3: First off, on some injury stage quarterback, you're car Charges
- 15:01Speaker 3: wide receiver Mike Williams.
- 15:04Speaker 4: Let's start out with on Derek Carr.
- 15:06Speaker 5: Steve Who Tennis Allen, the Saints head coach, just confirmed
- 15:09Speaker 5: a short time ago, is dealing with an ac joint spring.
- 15:12Speaker 5: Alan says that Carr is week to week. Also says
- 15:16Speaker 5: they're not even gonna rule him out for this week's
- 15:18Speaker 5: game against the Buccaneers. As Alan put it, we dodged
- 15:22Speaker 5: a bullet here that it wasn't something more significant. You
- 15:24Speaker 5: can see him getting ragged all to the ground there
- 15:26Speaker 5: by Rashaan Gary against the Packers in Sunday's game. Car
- 15:30Speaker 5: ended up in a local hospital undergoing further evaluation. That
- 15:35Speaker 5: often happens when you have an injury that potentially could
- 15:38Speaker 5: lead to something being punctured or some type of an
- 15:40Speaker 5: internal thing. He underwent tests. It was not that severe.
- 15:43Speaker 5: Now it's going to be a matter of how quickly
- 15:45Speaker 5: does he heal, how quickly does the pain the swelling
- 15:47Speaker 5: go away.
- 15:48Speaker 4: That will guide where the Saints go a quarterback.
- 15:50Speaker 5: If Carr can't go, then Jameis Winston would presumably be
- 15:54Speaker 5: the next man up. The news not as good on
- 15:56Speaker 5: Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams. He suffered a torn eight
- 16:00Speaker 5: in Sunday's win over the Vikings. The Chargers knew it
- 16:04Speaker 5: was bad on the field just looking at the mechanism
- 16:06Speaker 5: of the injury. They weren't entirely certain until Williams underwent
- 16:10Speaker 5: the MRI on Monday, but that confirmed as a season
- 16:13Speaker 5: ending type of an injury for Mike Williams at a
- 16:15Speaker 5: time that LA is going to be coming off of
- 16:17Speaker 5: their first win of the season in thrillian fashion against
- 16:20Speaker 5: the Vikings. Now, obviously they still have the likes of
- 16:23Speaker 5: Keenan Allen and Joshua Palmer. First round pick Quintin Johnston
- 16:27Speaker 5: now begins to come to the forefront here, not entirely
- 16:30Speaker 5: the exact same skill set as of Mike Williams, but
- 16:32Speaker 5: there have been some encouraging moments for Johnson so far
- 16:35Speaker 5: during training camp. Now he's going to get his shot
- 16:37Speaker 5: for real beginning this week.
- 16:40Speaker 1: So, Tom, you were at this game, and that's why
- 16:42Speaker 1: I kind of want to ask you this question, and
- 16:44Speaker 1: it's in two parts, and you handle that two part
- 16:45Speaker 1: or brilliantly, So I think this is going to be
- 16:47Speaker 1: a walk in the park for you. Like J. C.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Jackson is a healthy scratch right, and you know what
- 16:52Speaker 1: you're paying him as a corner. That's a, I think,
- 16:56Speaker 1: just a microcosm of what's happened to this Chargers defense
- 16:59Speaker 1: so far. The other part of it is we talk
- 17:01Speaker 1: about Mike Williams going down, but we've seen Kellen Moore
- 17:05Speaker 1: and Justin Herbert just kind of hit the ground running
- 17:08Speaker 1: offensively in the way that they performed on that side
- 17:11Speaker 1: of the ball. Tell me about that marriage offensively, But
- 17:14Speaker 1: also if they just play okay defense, can the Chargers go.
- 17:18Speaker 2: On a run here?
- 17:20Speaker 4: Well?
- 17:21Speaker 5: First of all, James, I think it's important to note
- 17:22Speaker 5: that the Chargers have been dealing with some injuries so
- 17:24Speaker 5: far on defense. Joey Bosa, who's their star pass rusher,
- 17:27Speaker 5: only played a very limited number of snaps in Week two.
- 17:30Speaker 5: We played a little bit more in Week three, but
- 17:32Speaker 5: they don't have him entirely full go yet. Or when
- 17:34Speaker 5: James dropped out with an injury on Sunday, Jase Jackson
- 17:37Speaker 5: not active because of non injury related reasons, and they're
- 17:41Speaker 5: middle linebacker Eric Kendricks, the former Viking, also not out
- 17:44Speaker 5: there right now as he deals with a hamstring injury.
- 17:47Speaker 5: So you've got a lot of moving parts. I thought
- 17:49Speaker 5: that it was notable that when the Chargers went for
- 17:52Speaker 5: it on that fourth and one did not get it
- 17:54Speaker 5: at their own twenty four yard line, the LA defense
- 17:57Speaker 5: was challenged there. They were going to have to save
- 17:59Speaker 5: the day for these and sure enough, the backup to
- 18:02Speaker 5: Eric Kendricks Ben Nieman is the one who's got blanket
- 18:04Speaker 5: coverage on the NFL's highest paid tight end, TJ. Hawkinson
- 18:08Speaker 5: knocks that ball into the air. Kenneth Murray comes up
- 18:10Speaker 5: with an interception. It's not where anyone would like. They've
- 18:13Speaker 5: had to adjust some things in terms of how they're
- 18:15Speaker 5: playing Schematically, they're a little bit different than what historically
- 18:18Speaker 5: for Brandon Staley coming out of that vic Fango type
- 18:21Speaker 5: scheme is a shell defense. This year we've seen them
- 18:23Speaker 5: play a lot more man cover one, so they've had
- 18:26Speaker 5: to make some adjustments based on who's on the field.
- 18:28Speaker 6: Here.
- 18:28Speaker 5: You saw them going with a different lineup at corner.
- 18:31Speaker 5: They thought that that gave him the best chance to win.
- 18:33Speaker 5: It was not entirely clean. Justin Jefferson, it seems like
- 18:35Speaker 5: it's going to get one hundred and fifty yards on
- 18:36Speaker 5: everybody he.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Faces on it.
- 18:38Speaker 5: They did not break in the biggest moment in that game,
- 18:42Speaker 5: and La is able to come away with a win.
- 18:44Speaker 5: As for Kellen Moore and that marriage with Justin Herbert,
- 18:47Speaker 5: I think that that's been you know, there's certainly been
- 18:48Speaker 5: bumps like you would anticipate coming out of the gate.
- 18:51Speaker 5: They did stay in Justin Herbert's language, which was a
- 18:53Speaker 5: big deal. In other words, they didn't change all the terminology.
- 18:56Speaker 5: They wanted him to have that level of consistency as
- 18:59Speaker 5: he moved move forward here it's more vertical passing than
- 19:02Speaker 5: he's done in the past. You saw some of those
- 19:04Speaker 5: big plays, So keenan Allen make a big play throwing
- 19:06Speaker 5: the football down the field too. Remember they haven't had
- 19:09Speaker 5: Austin Eckler for these past two games because of an
- 19:11Speaker 5: ankle injury. Well, what happens when you don't have Austin
- 19:14Speaker 5: Eckler and no offense to Josh Kelly. You've got different
- 19:17Speaker 5: backs in the backfield. Nobody's respecting the run. They're beginning
- 19:20Speaker 5: to play to take away the pass here, and that
- 19:22Speaker 5: didn't change a whole lot. You did this, Leslie Frazier mentioned,
- 19:25Speaker 5: have a lot more blitzer that the Vikers were trying
- 19:27Speaker 5: to throw at Justin Herbert. They still were able to
- 19:29Speaker 5: get those explosives. And I don't know how old Keenan
- 19:31Speaker 5: Allen is at this point. He's like thirty four. He
- 19:34Speaker 5: still looks like he's absolutely in his prime and had
- 19:36Speaker 5: a monster day against the Vikings.
- 19:38Speaker 3: He's thirty one. In the words of Brandis Daily, he
- 19:40Speaker 3: still has his stinger. Tom, we got about oh, sorry seconds.
- 19:43Speaker 4: Added three years for you there, that's all right.
- 19:46Speaker 2: But we got about forty five seconds.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Way, he looks, I think you're accurate.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Yeah, Kirk Cousins three. A lot of conversation about potential trade.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Could the Vikings just dump him? Is that feasible?
- 19:57Speaker 2: Like? Why why would they dump him? Right now? Over
- 20:00Speaker 2: to one three?
- 20:01Speaker 3: But could he potentially be moved?
- 20:05Speaker 5: Well, first of all, Kirk Cousins has a no trade clause,
- 20:07Speaker 5: so he would have to approve any deal. And if
- 20:10Speaker 5: your cousins and you're trying to get to one more
- 20:14Speaker 5: big time pay day, it's Kirk Cousins. Maybe he's got
- 20:16Speaker 5: three more big paydays, but at least one more come March.
- 20:19Speaker 5: Going to a new team that maybe isn't the best situation,
- 20:21Speaker 5: not having the familiarity. There's some potential dangers in that
- 20:25Speaker 5: the Vikings also, even though they're owen three here, I
- 20:28Speaker 5: have not gotten any sense that they look at this
- 20:30Speaker 5: and say we got to tear it down, trade everybody
- 20:32Speaker 5: and start over. They've been challenged out of the gate,
- 20:35Speaker 5: They've played a bunch of close games. They won all
- 20:37Speaker 5: those close games last year. This year all one possession games,
- 20:40Speaker 5: all losses. But you don't go out and trade for
- 20:43Speaker 5: cam Akers. You don't go and sol sign Dalton Riisner
- 20:46Speaker 5: two moves they made last week. If you're not anticipating
- 20:49Speaker 5: we still could be competitive right now in twenty twenty three.
- 20:52Speaker 5: Maybe we're having a different conversation as we get closer
- 20:54Speaker 5: to the trade deadline here, But right now, guys, I
- 20:56Speaker 5: would not say that that is the focus for the
- 20:59Speaker 5: Vikings here, still trying to figure out, okay, what's our
- 21:01Speaker 5: path forward to be competing in the NFC North where
- 21:05Speaker 5: this point two games back, but a long way to go.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Tom Pete, thank you.
- 21:08Speaker 1: I can't believe Tom, real quick, Tom, I can't believe
- 21:12Speaker 1: that you would undersell Kirk Cousins like that and say
- 21:15Speaker 1: he only has three more paydays left. I mean, I
- 21:18Speaker 1: can't believe you would disrespect kirk guarantee money three more
- 21:22Speaker 1: pay days I.
- 21:23Speaker 5: Think twenty fifteen, so he's on year nine consecutively of
- 21:28Speaker 5: having fully guaranteed money. Listen, it's gonna be an interesting
- 21:31Speaker 5: quarterback here because you've got Ryan Tannehill is also pending
- 21:33Speaker 5: free agent. You've got uncertain features from a bunch of
- 21:36Speaker 5: guys right now who are currently under contract with teams.
- 21:39Speaker 5: Maybe there are trades that happen in the offseason. Also,
- 21:42Speaker 5: as a quarterback class in the draft that is considered
- 21:44Speaker 5: to be really, really good.
- 21:46Speaker 4: It's gonna be fascinating. Thank goodness.
- 21:48Speaker 5: We're still like six months away from that, but it's
- 21:50Speaker 5: not that far away.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, I know you have to wait about it.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Can't wait for that. It's gonna be good. Tom Pete,
- 21:55Speaker 3: thank you so much for joining us. Brother, Get some rest,
- 21:59Speaker 3: all right. And in the big upset of the weekend
- 22:01Speaker 3: in the desert, the Arizona Cardinals spring for an upset
- 22:06Speaker 3: of the Dallas Cowboys, who everybody thought we're gonna go
- 22:08Speaker 3: seventeen and oh but Arizona oh to two.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Start very competitive.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Each of those games. See Josh Dobbs, a quarterback, come
- 22:16Speaker 3: here and lead the upset. So let's bring in our
- 22:18Speaker 3: Omar Ruiz, who was at that game.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Omar, you went.
- 22:22Speaker 3: Into the Cardinals locker room after that game, what was
- 22:25Speaker 3: it like? Because this is a team everyone said, Oh,
- 22:27Speaker 3: they're gonna be drafting the first overall pick next year.
- 22:30Speaker 2: They're gonna absolutely stink.
- 22:31Speaker 3: But they had every game in every game this year
- 22:35Speaker 3: and then they upset the Cowboys.
- 22:39Speaker 7: Yeah, well, they have a locker room full of confidence.
- 22:41Speaker 8: This is a team that feels they should be three
- 22:44Speaker 8: and oh and all that stuff about thinking the Cardinals
- 22:47Speaker 8: are going to be the first pick in the draft
- 22:49Speaker 8: and all the naysayers. They've heard of all that, not
- 22:52Speaker 8: necessarily through media reports, but Cavon Wallace and Kaisier White
- 22:57Speaker 8: both said that their family members have been them about
- 23:01Speaker 8: how badly the Cowboys were gonna beat them, and they're
- 23:03Speaker 8: looking forward to getting back at their family members. So
- 23:05Speaker 8: it's a team with growing confidence that never stopped believing
- 23:09Speaker 8: in themselves even in those deficient games against Washington and
- 23:14Speaker 8: against the New York Giants. So for them to capitalize
- 23:17Speaker 8: on the Dallas Cowboys at home was big for them.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Omro, I'm curious what the take is being there and
- 23:24Speaker 1: in the locker room with players talking about their head
- 23:27Speaker 1: coach Jonathan Gannon and his first season as a head coach.
- 23:30Speaker 1: To me talking to people in Arizona Monday morning, it
- 23:33Speaker 1: was this, we might have blown leads in second half
- 23:36Speaker 1: of both of our first two games, but what does
- 23:39Speaker 1: it show us in the first half when our team
- 23:41Speaker 1: came out what appears to be prepared, probably not as
- 23:44Speaker 1: talented as most of the teams in the NFL. Let's
- 23:47Speaker 1: just be entirely honest, and they're smart, made good decisions
- 23:50Speaker 1: to get those double digit leads early. Something's going right
- 23:53Speaker 1: early in these games. And the people in Arizona I
- 23:56Speaker 1: talked to point two, that's coaching right, that's preparing your
- 23:59Speaker 1: players during the week in the early portion of the games.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Maybe we have to learn how to win as part
- 24:04Speaker 1: of that. What's the take with this team and Jonathan Gannon,
- 24:07Speaker 1: Because to me, this is maybe Steve in all honesty,
- 24:10Speaker 1: looking at all three of their games, one of the
- 24:12Speaker 1: bigger surprises of a team coming out and playing as
- 24:15Speaker 1: well as Arizona has with the talent that they have.
- 24:20Speaker 8: Well, I think the complete buy in for Jonathan Gannon
- 24:22Speaker 8: has been there, and that's something that I've seen since
- 24:24Speaker 8: OTAs all through Mini camp training, camp and now the
- 24:28Speaker 8: regular season. It's interesting to point out the fact that
- 24:31Speaker 8: they've outscored their opponents fifty four to twenty in the
- 24:35Speaker 8: first half of the season.
- 24:36Speaker 7: So to your point, they're coming out prepared, they have a.
- 24:38Speaker 8: Solid game plan, and you figured they've had a good
- 24:41Speaker 8: they would have a good game plan against Dallas, specifically
- 24:44Speaker 8: on defense, given Jonathan Gannon and Nick Rales, the Cardinals
- 24:47Speaker 8: defensive coordinators history in the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles,
- 24:51Speaker 8: And I asked Jonathan Gannon after the game, what tangible
- 24:55Speaker 8: lessons maybe they learned from those first two losses, because
- 24:58Speaker 8: of course they kept saying that they have to finish
- 25:00Speaker 8: and they have to change how they finished games. But
- 25:02Speaker 8: what tangibly might have they worked more diligently to finish
- 25:07Speaker 8: this And he said, you know, if they're going to
- 25:10Speaker 8: allow teams to go down the field of them, don't
- 25:12Speaker 8: allow them to go quickly. In other words, limit the
- 25:15Speaker 8: explosive plays. And that's something they did against the Dallas Cowboys.
- 25:19Speaker 8: And then to buckle up in the red zone, and
- 25:21Speaker 8: we saw Dallas go one.
- 25:23Speaker 7: For five in the red area.
- 25:25Speaker 8: Kaizer White that big interception on Dak Prescott to essentially
- 25:28Speaker 8: seal the game. And what was interesting is White said
- 25:31Speaker 8: in that play call. Throughout the week at practice he
- 25:33Speaker 8: kept messing it up, but obviously in the game did
- 25:37Speaker 8: not mess it up when it mattered most. And he
- 25:39Speaker 8: said he was on point the entire game, even though
- 25:42Speaker 8: he struggled with it during the week.
- 25:44Speaker 7: But yeah, this is a team that's bought in.
- 25:45Speaker 8: And I asked Gannon also, did you need this win,
- 25:49Speaker 8: you know, to validate everything for the foundation you guys
- 25:52Speaker 8: are laying and he said, no, you know what they
- 25:54Speaker 8: do on a daily basis. You know they believe in
- 25:58Speaker 8: their process driven, not necessarily results driven. That's something he's
- 26:01Speaker 8: been preaching the entire offseason. But certainly feels good to
- 26:05Speaker 8: get that win and something that you know they don't
- 26:08Speaker 8: necessarily feel validated by, but understand it's a results driven league.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Soids again getting a w and coach speak.
- 26:15Speaker 3: According to Omar right there, Hey, oh, we appreciate you,
- 26:18Speaker 3: I tell you what. With the way Josh Dobbs is
- 26:21Speaker 3: playing right now too, I think that is something we
- 26:24Speaker 3: need to keep watching because he's playing at a starting
- 26:26Speaker 3: quarterback level. Omar, Luiz, we appreciate you joining us here
- 26:31Speaker 3: on the block. And coming up, JP, we are going
- 26:34Speaker 3: to get some insight from one of.
- 26:36Speaker 2: The best defensive coaches in the.
- 26:39Speaker 3: NFL past few decades, passing my ideas on that Broncos defense.
- 26:46Speaker 3: We had no d in it on Sunday against the
- 26:48Speaker 3: Dolphins here on the NFL Report.
- 27:01Speaker 6: I'll be brief.
- 27:03Speaker 7: Obviously that was embarrassing and.
- 27:08Speaker 6: Tough to watch.
- 27:11Speaker 8: Aside from the kick return, there weren't a lot of
- 27:13Speaker 8: positives to take from that game.
- 27:15Speaker 6: I know that you said it's embarrassing, but this is
- 27:18Speaker 6: kind of an historic game. I'm third time the team
- 27:22Speaker 6: has scored seventy points over seven. What's the question?
- 27:25Speaker 4: I mean, what's the question?
- 27:27Speaker 6: I just finished telling you historically embarrassing. Next question.
- 27:33Speaker 3: As Broncos coach Sean Payton hitting a reporter with the
- 27:37Speaker 3: next question, James Palmer, we are now joined by a
- 27:41Speaker 3: former NFL head coach when we're a longtime defensive coordinator
- 27:44Speaker 3: and class of twenty twenty three Black College Football Hall
- 27:48Speaker 3: of Famer Leslie Fraser, who's now a.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Member of our NFL Network crew. Least good seeing you.
- 27:55Speaker 6: Good, good to be here.
- 27:56Speaker 9: Thank you guys for having.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Me, absolutely so.
- 27:58Speaker 3: Lest We're starting right there, start right there, seventy stacks, right,
- 28:04Speaker 3: they got seventy points hung on them.
- 28:06Speaker 2: From what you saw in that game. We know the Dolphins.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Dolphins offense is explosive, but what is going on with
- 28:14Speaker 3: that Broncos defense to get abused like it did?
- 28:18Speaker 9: Yeah, well, first thing, Steve, you know, just seeing that
- 28:21Speaker 9: tone by Sean that press conference, that gives you an
- 28:24Speaker 9: idea or probably what everyone is spilling in that locker
- 28:28Speaker 9: room as well. I mean, as a coordinator in this
- 28:32Speaker 9: league on defense, no one wants to experience what those
- 28:36Speaker 9: guys experienced yesterday. And yeah, there's gonna be some humbling
- 28:40Speaker 9: moments during your season if you're in this league long enough,
- 28:44Speaker 9: but to experience what they did yesterday, it just I mean,
- 28:48Speaker 9: Sean said it was embarrassing in so many.
- 28:50Speaker 6: Ways, but that happens in this league.
- 28:53Speaker 9: But what I saw was at times the tackling wasn't
- 28:57Speaker 9: what you wanted to be. Obviously, there's some things and
- 29:00Speaker 9: they can do better schematically. And I know Vance Joseph,
- 29:02Speaker 9: he's a really good football coach, good guy, and he's
- 29:07Speaker 9: gonna work as hard as he can to get things
- 29:09Speaker 9: turned around. I know that meeting today with the players
- 29:12Speaker 9: is a tough one. But you can see even on
- 29:14Speaker 9: the clip that you're showing the tackling man, it just
- 29:17Speaker 9: showed up over and over and over again. Nobody could
- 29:20Speaker 9: find a way to make a play. And at some point,
- 29:24Speaker 9: you know, you want to try to stop the bleeding,
- 29:26Speaker 9: someone has to stand up and make a play, and
- 29:28Speaker 9: that just didn't happen in that ball game yesterday. So
- 29:31Speaker 9: you really want to go back to the fundamentals and
- 29:34Speaker 9: the technique that's necessary to help you to improve. And
- 29:38Speaker 9: then you got to go back and say, what about
- 29:40Speaker 9: our scheme? You know, what are we gonna have to
- 29:42Speaker 9: do schematically to get this fixed? And they've got some
- 29:46Speaker 9: issues that's obvious based on what happened this past weekend,
- 29:50Speaker 9: then even a week before when Washington was able to
- 29:53Speaker 9: come back in the second half. I mean, so there's
- 29:56Speaker 9: some things that have to be worked out and they've
- 29:59Speaker 9: got a lot of work ahead of them. But that
- 30:01Speaker 9: was that was tough to watch for everyone.
- 30:07Speaker 1: You're exactly right, when you give up over three hundred
- 30:09Speaker 1: and fifty yards running and over three hundred and fifty
- 30:12Speaker 1: yards passing, the balance of the beatdown almost hurts even
- 30:17Speaker 1: even worse. Let's push this forward to some other because
- 30:20Speaker 1: I want to pick your brain in terms of putting
- 30:23Speaker 1: your coaching hat on here and Brandon Staley and it
- 30:26Speaker 1: is one fifty one remaining in the game. It is
- 30:29Speaker 1: fourth in inches, they're up by four from their own
- 30:32Speaker 1: twenty four. Now, analytics will tell you that this is
- 30:36Speaker 1: what they should do, go for it. I want to
- 30:39Speaker 1: know from a coaching standpoint on the sideline, what would
- 30:43Speaker 1: go through your mind, your staff. I kind of just
- 30:46Speaker 1: want to get a feel for this whole moment and
- 30:49Speaker 1: what you think what would be your kind of your
- 30:52Speaker 1: your process.
- 30:55Speaker 9: Well, from an operational standpoint, James, you know you you
- 30:58Speaker 9: probably have someone in your your one of your analytics
- 31:01Speaker 9: guys talking about the probability of success if you go forward,
- 31:05Speaker 9: and you may have a coach on your staff, your
- 31:07Speaker 9: assistant head coach, if you have one or one of
- 31:10Speaker 9: your confidence who's telling you on the headset, Hey, coach,
- 31:14Speaker 9: they need a touchdown to win the game. They have
- 31:19Speaker 9: no time out. If we punt, make them keep the
- 31:23Speaker 9: ball in bounds, there's a very good chance we're gonna
- 31:28Speaker 9: win this game on defense if we punt the football
- 31:31Speaker 9: and make them have to go to the lift of
- 31:32Speaker 9: the field. So you're hearing that and you've got to
- 31:34Speaker 9: be able to dissect that information and then make a decision.
- 31:38Speaker 9: And you know, Brandon made the decision to go forward.
- 31:43Speaker 9: The analytics didn't work, and you know, at there are
- 31:47Speaker 9: times where you need to override analytics and sometimes go
- 31:52Speaker 9: based on how your team is performing or where you
- 31:56Speaker 9: are in the ball game. And didn't make a decision
- 31:59Speaker 9: as a head coach, and in this case, he made
- 32:02Speaker 9: the decision and it almost backfar.
- 32:04Speaker 3: But let's se Okay, this is the question I've had
- 32:06Speaker 3: because you know, we know Brandon loves to do this stuff,
- 32:08Speaker 3: play this analytics game, go for it on fourth down.
- 32:11Speaker 2: You talked about the situation of the game.
- 32:13Speaker 3: They got Kirk Cousin and Justin Jefferson and you just
- 32:16Speaker 3: gave them twenty four yards to get into the end zone.
- 32:18Speaker 3: If not for some nincome poop behavior that they did
- 32:20Speaker 3: when they got the ball back, they would have won
- 32:23Speaker 3: that ball game. So is there anyone who could get
- 32:25Speaker 3: in Brandon Staley's ear and say do not do this
- 32:30Speaker 3: and it do not run a fullback dive over the right. Yeah,
- 32:36Speaker 3: it wasn't a freaking spectacular play.
- 32:39Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, personally, I don't I don't want to
- 32:43Speaker 9: second guess the play call.
- 32:44Speaker 6: Yeah, you're right.
- 32:45Speaker 9: The hindsight, you could say maybe they should have run
- 32:47Speaker 9: a different play. But going forward in that situation is
- 32:51Speaker 9: what I have a bigger problem with, not so much
- 32:54Speaker 9: to play call. And it's just the defense was probably
- 32:57Speaker 9: playing as better than they played in the first couple
- 33:01Speaker 9: of weeks. Yes, so make Minnesota thankful to drive the
- 33:05Speaker 9: field and and and make them have to make some plays. Uh,
- 33:10Speaker 9: but you know they chose not to do that, and
- 33:12Speaker 9: it almost cost them uh to end up.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Being oh and three.
- 33:17Speaker 9: Fortunately, Minnesota doesn't spike the ball when they had an
- 33:20Speaker 9: opportunity to to try to gather themselves, especially with TJ.
- 33:24Speaker 9: Hockinson being a little bit banged up and then justin
- 33:27Speaker 9: uh suffering with cramps.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Uh.
- 33:30Speaker 9: So you know, you think they needed a blow and
- 33:33Speaker 9: that was an opportunity to get that done. And you
- 33:35Speaker 9: saw the comments by Kevin and he really felt like
- 33:39Speaker 9: he should have spoken to h Kurt got word to
- 33:43Speaker 9: him to go ahead and spike it to get those
- 33:46Speaker 9: as a chance to get their breath. But they didn't,
- 33:49Speaker 9: and they hurried up, tried to make a play and
- 33:51Speaker 9: it and it cost him quickly.
- 33:53Speaker 3: Lesson should we would you get Kirt Cousins the past
- 33:55Speaker 3: saying wait for his coach to spike it. He'd been
- 33:57Speaker 3: in this league a long time, He's done some great things.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Sometimes I veteran quarterbacks. Got to make a veteran quarterback play.
- 34:03Speaker 9: Oh yeah, I've been around some great quarterbacks in no
- 34:06Speaker 9: situations Peyton Mann and been one of them. I mean,
- 34:10Speaker 9: you know he's going to take control in that situation.
- 34:12Speaker 9: And I know that that Kurt, you know, has the
- 34:16Speaker 9: confidence of the coaching staff to be able to spike
- 34:19Speaker 9: that football in that situation. They work on it all
- 34:22Speaker 9: the time and they're two being a drill and a
- 34:23Speaker 9: hurry up situations. So would not have put anybody out
- 34:27Speaker 9: of sorts if he had chosen to spike it. For
- 34:29Speaker 9: whatever reason he didn't in that moment, and that it
- 34:33Speaker 9: ended up costing him a ball game.
- 34:38Speaker 1: I feel like you could watch the tape of the
- 34:40Speaker 1: end of that game, lesson and just teach coaching, uh
- 34:43Speaker 1: for hours and hours about about how it went down.
- 34:47Speaker 1: I got one last one for you, and I know
- 34:49Speaker 1: we gotta be a little quicker with this. You wanted
- 34:51Speaker 1: to talk about teams that can get to the quarterback
- 34:54Speaker 1: with four pass rushers or four rushers or four man rushers,
- 34:58Speaker 1: what is going to be the importance? So I can
- 35:00Speaker 1: watch that as a more educated fan this season, that's
- 35:03Speaker 1: going to change the way some of these defenses can
- 35:05Speaker 1: compete down the stretch.
- 35:07Speaker 9: Well, James, you as you watch the league and you
- 35:09Speaker 9: see how it's definitely a passing league, and Miami is
- 35:13Speaker 9: obviously a great example of that, and other teams as
- 35:15Speaker 9: well that are doing a good job of throwing the
- 35:17Speaker 9: ball around. If you have to rely on five and
- 35:20Speaker 9: six man pressure to get out of the quarterback, kind
- 35:23Speaker 9: of like what Minnesota was trying to do yesterday. I
- 35:25Speaker 9: think they blitzed justin you know, fifty percent of the time.
- 35:32Speaker 9: And when you're doing that and you're not able to
- 35:34Speaker 9: rush with four, you put your secondary at peril and
- 35:37Speaker 9: now you run the risk of giving up explosives. And
- 35:40Speaker 9: that's kind of been the Chargers problem throughout the season
- 35:43Speaker 9: and other teams as well. But when you look at
- 35:45Speaker 9: the Browns, you look at the Bills, you look at
- 35:47Speaker 9: even the Jets, the Cowboys, teams that can rush with four,
- 35:51Speaker 9: it gives you a better chance to be able to
- 35:53Speaker 9: affect the quarterback and take the football away as well
- 35:56Speaker 9: versus trying to, you know, bring five or six and
- 35:59Speaker 9: exposing your self can do.
- 36:02Speaker 1: I love it. I love it. I love that we
- 36:03Speaker 1: have your mind, Leslie to have on this show because
- 36:05Speaker 1: mine's all right. Steve's is better than mine, but yours
- 36:08Speaker 1: is better than both of ours. So I appreciate it.
- 36:11Speaker 1: We're gonna have you back on I think next week. See,
- 36:13Speaker 1: let's have Leslie on just as many times we're gonna.
- 36:15Speaker 2: We're gonna.
- 36:15Speaker 4: We're gonnakeep ready.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Keep him in here, man, we need the knowledge.
- 36:18Speaker 6: Appreciate it.
- 36:19Speaker 1: You need it, man, we need it. You got it,
- 36:21Speaker 1: you got it, Leslie. Coming up on the NFL Report,
- 36:23Speaker 1: we're gonna talk to Jeff Shadia about one and only
- 36:26Speaker 1: Brock Party. I think Brock deserves a little more credits.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Yes he does.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Steve agrees. Let's break down party. Coming up on the

- 37:18Speaker 3: we are joined by the author of First Read and
- 37:20Speaker 3: he has the first Read block.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Jeff Shedea. Jeff, thanks so much for joining us. JP.
- 37:26Speaker 3: You know, Jeff lives in Kansas City and right now
- 37:28Speaker 3: they're famous for a little bit more than the Chiefs
- 37:30Speaker 3: and barbecue, just a little bit.
- 37:33Speaker 10: It's it's it's Taylor Swift Town now basically the Travis
- 37:39Speaker 10: Kelce and Travis Kelce's mom in the suite, about three
- 37:42Speaker 10: hundred people in there with her. I've never seen that
- 37:45Speaker 10: many people in one suite, and that many black guys
- 37:47Speaker 10: were in red outfits going nuts.
- 37:49Speaker 6: Yeah, it was. It was definitely lit in Kansas City.
- 37:53Speaker 10: In fact, they talk more about her being there than
- 37:56Speaker 10: they do about the game right now.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Well they should have.
- 37:58Speaker 3: The game was trash woked them.
- 38:00Speaker 10: Oh yeah, yeah, it was over pretty fast. That probably
- 38:06Speaker 10: got her more airtime. Right if the game was good,
- 38:08Speaker 10: you wouldn't see I've seen her as much. There's like
- 38:10Speaker 10: thirty shots of her in that contest.
- 38:13Speaker 1: That's great. I heard Jeff was watching the game as
- 38:15Speaker 1: a drinking game with the rest of his buddies, and
- 38:17Speaker 1: every time they showed Taylor Swift. By the end, Jeff
- 38:20Speaker 1: could barely write his article. That's what I heard, Jeff.
- 38:23Speaker 1: Let let's talk about there she is. If you're you're
- 38:27Speaker 1: missing this, if you're a slag podcast, Taylor Swift and
- 38:30Speaker 1: a bunch of guys, ego nuts, everybody's going nuts. Donna
- 38:33Speaker 1: Kelsey's actually rather reserved as a whole. I'm curious, Jeff,
- 38:39Speaker 1: because you wrote about this in the article about the
- 38:42Speaker 1: other side of the ball. Not Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelsey,
- 38:46Speaker 1: but this Chief's defense. We've all spent a lot of
- 38:48Speaker 1: time around the Chiefs. September is usually when Steve Spagnola
- 38:52Speaker 1: is getting hammered, right, Remember it was it a couple
- 38:54Speaker 1: of years ago. They were giving up more yards per
- 38:56Speaker 1: play than any team in NFL history through like the
- 38:59Speaker 1: first five or games. This defense is different and maybe,
- 39:03Speaker 1: as you put it, the best defense Mahomes has ever had.
- 39:08Speaker 6: Well, I think it's not even close.
- 39:09Speaker 10: And it's it's not even close really, because you've got
- 39:12Speaker 10: a lot more athleticism, a lot more speed, a lot
- 39:16Speaker 10: more versatility. You know in the past, you know Spag's
- 39:19Speaker 10: defense can be pretty complicated. He has all these different
- 39:22Speaker 10: pressure packages and coverages.
- 39:24Speaker 6: He likes to roll out.
- 39:25Speaker 10: But this team has been together for a while now,
- 39:27Speaker 10: this unit, and you're seeing some of that maturity, some
- 39:30Speaker 10: of that experience pay off for them. They still have
- 39:33Speaker 10: the hammer up front with Chris Jones, but young guys
- 39:36Speaker 10: like like Leo Chanal and George Carloftis and Mike Dana
- 39:40Speaker 10: even feeling in the duque Uzama or Rocky are starting
- 39:42Speaker 10: to make an impact. But really on the back end
- 39:45Speaker 10: where you've got I think adding Drew Tranquil from the
- 39:47Speaker 10: Chargers is a big pickup for them. And then obviously
- 39:51Speaker 10: you've got Lugerius Snee. You've got Trent McDuffie, two corners
- 39:54Speaker 10: who are really good, really good in coverage, can blitz,
- 39:56Speaker 10: do a lot of different stuff.
- 39:57Speaker 6: They can throw a lot at you with this group.
- 39:59Speaker 3: Jeff, think because Chris Jones wasn't there all I'm sorry, James,
- 40:03Speaker 3: because Chris Jones wasn't there, that some of these other
- 40:05Speaker 3: players were able to kind of step up and maybe
- 40:08Speaker 3: learn get some repetitions that have advanced or sped up
- 40:11Speaker 3: accelerated this process.
- 40:13Speaker 10: I think two things happen, and James knows this from
- 40:16Speaker 10: being around the Chiefs. I think Spags had to be
- 40:18Speaker 10: a lot more flexible with the young guys, even last
- 40:23Speaker 10: year playing young guys with not him his mol but
- 40:25Speaker 10: he found a way to do it.
- 40:26Speaker 6: So I think he learned a new put a new
- 40:28Speaker 6: trick into his bag.
- 40:29Speaker 10: But then secondly, that first game when they did not
- 40:32Speaker 10: have Chris Jones, he came out and talked about them
- 40:34Speaker 10: playing as a unit, staying focused, staying together, And I
- 40:39Speaker 10: think that's what they learned with that you play defense
- 40:41Speaker 10: that way, you don't worry much about all the splash
- 40:43Speaker 10: plays and all the big highlight plays that you can
- 40:46Speaker 10: do a pretty good job.
- 40:47Speaker 6: But that's what they've been doing.
- 40:48Speaker 10: I say it all all the time, James, that the
- 40:50Speaker 10: best thing about this defense right now. They don't ask
- 40:53Speaker 10: guys to do things they can't do.
- 40:56Speaker 1: That's that's genius and that part of I'll make this
- 40:59Speaker 1: point real quick, what I was gonna say. I remember
- 41:01Speaker 1: talking to a safety justin Reidduring training camp and he
- 41:03Speaker 1: was like, you have no idea because you mentioned the
- 41:05Speaker 1: secondary Jeff no idea what camp has been like for
- 41:07Speaker 1: me this year compared to last year when I was
- 41:10Speaker 1: like learning my parts and also teaching six other rookies
- 41:14Speaker 1: their positions in the secondary. The secondary just has a
- 41:18Speaker 1: better cohesion to it, Steve, because everybody's not just learning
- 41:21Speaker 1: it for the first time, and you have safeties trying
- 41:23Speaker 1: to get everybody where they need to go. That's a
- 41:26Speaker 1: different part of this group we've seen, and obviously if
- 41:28Speaker 1: they don't have to cover as long with Chris Jones
- 41:30Speaker 1: on the field, that helps you out too.
- 41:32Speaker 3: That's right, Hey, Jeff, you know before we did the
- 41:34Speaker 3: show today, you know, James was talking about potential MVP
- 41:37Speaker 3: candidates were discussing the show, and I said, one guy
- 41:40Speaker 3: we can overlook is brock Perty Right, he's not going
- 41:42Speaker 3: to necessarily create the tool like stats. But you wrote
- 41:46Speaker 3: in your column, we have got to stop thinking about
- 41:49Speaker 3: this guy is a good story because he is a
- 41:51Speaker 3: legitimate stud NFL quarterback.
- 41:55Speaker 10: Yeah, that was the whole thing with the column was
- 41:57Speaker 10: respect and guys who finally should be getting a lot.
- 42:00Speaker 6: Of suppose us wondering when it's going to fall.
- 42:02Speaker 10: Apart from him and Rock Purty certainly leads that category
- 42:06Speaker 10: because when I watch him play now and knowing how
- 42:08Speaker 10: people talked about him in this offseason, I mean, there
- 42:11Speaker 10: was so much there's so much confidence in what he
- 42:13Speaker 10: does now, there's so much of a sense of he's
- 42:16Speaker 10: still playing within himself, but he knows he makes the play.
- 42:18Speaker 10: He knows he can make the place he has to
- 42:20Speaker 10: make what he's called upon. He can use his legs,
- 42:23Speaker 10: use his arm, then put them in bad positions, then
- 42:26Speaker 10: turn the ball over, and.
- 42:27Speaker 6: It writes Steve quietly.
- 42:29Speaker 10: That's what gets you to the MVB conversation, being consistent
- 42:32Speaker 10: and playing on high profile teams that win a lot.
- 42:35Speaker 10: So I totally agree with you that he should be
- 42:36Speaker 10: in that conversation.
- 42:38Speaker 1: I remember having a conversation with Kyle Yuschek who was
- 42:41Speaker 1: telling me, like, listen, he's a completely different guy, Jeff.
- 42:44Speaker 1: When the lights come on for a game, he's like,
- 42:46Speaker 1: he's the epitome of a gamer. Just his savviness, his intelligence,
- 42:51Speaker 1: his ability to be just because of his mind. He's
- 42:53Speaker 1: a step faster than you think he is when the
- 42:56Speaker 1: game is actually happening on Sunday when he needs to
- 42:58Speaker 1: buy some time. But to me, the thing that stands
- 42:59Speaker 1: out to him to me the most is you can
- 43:02Speaker 1: put things I'm told in late Saturday night. Hey, we're
- 43:05Speaker 1: gonna change it. I know we're working on this way,
- 43:07Speaker 1: Kyle says to him all week now, we're gonna flip it,
- 43:09Speaker 1: and we're gonna do it Saturday. He can make that.
- 43:11Speaker 1: That doesn't bother him one bit. Is the stature though,
- 43:15Speaker 1: the physical statue of Rock Party affecting him because you're
- 43:18Speaker 1: a man of much much acclaim in your stature, Jeff,
- 43:22Speaker 1: Is that affecting Rock Party in terms of this MVP
- 43:25Speaker 1: discussion because he's a g gaglio shucks guy walking into
- 43:28Speaker 1: the building.
- 43:29Speaker 10: Well, you know what you know when I when I
- 43:31Speaker 10: do my MVP ratings, h for the for the first read,
- 43:35Speaker 10: it's what I've been blown away by in this first three,
- 43:37Speaker 10: which is how hard it is to find people you
- 43:39Speaker 10: really believe in who you can make a case for.
- 43:42Speaker 10: And two us running away with it right now. And
- 43:44Speaker 10: I think Tyreek Hill should be in that conversation. And
- 43:46Speaker 10: you could have made a case for Michael Parshers before
- 43:49Speaker 10: this past weekend. But there's a lot of opportunity for
- 43:52Speaker 10: someone like him in a season like this to step
- 43:55Speaker 10: into that conversation because a lot of the guys who
- 43:57Speaker 10: you you know, you expect to be there, like like
- 44:00Speaker 10: Joe Burrows justin Herbert's and Josh Allens, they're not taking
- 44:04Speaker 10: off in the same way, and so we still have
- 44:06Speaker 10: to have people to vote for and talk about. And
- 44:08Speaker 10: he's going to have played enough big time games. And
- 44:11Speaker 10: when he's playing these games already, he looks the part.
- 44:13Speaker 10: He looks like a guy who knows what he's doing,
- 44:16Speaker 10: who's having an impact beyond just being along for the ride.
- 44:19Speaker 3: Yeah, and Jeff, you know, last Thursday night, I was
- 44:21Speaker 3: at their game against the Giants. I was with future
- 44:23Speaker 3: Hall of Famer wide receiver Steve Smith. He said he
- 44:26Speaker 3: the one that he loves about brock Perdy is he
- 44:28Speaker 3: does not put his receivers in harm's way. And when
- 44:32Speaker 3: that happens, your receivers, as we see in Deebo, Samuel
- 44:35Speaker 3: and Brandon I you can kitdle, they will reciprocate. Lastly, Jeff,
- 44:39Speaker 3: in your column, JP and I have been talking about
- 44:42Speaker 3: this guy since the jump. Deshaun Watson has a real
- 44:46Speaker 3: tough performance Monday night against the Steelers and bounces back
- 44:50Speaker 3: against the Titans has his best performance of the season.
- 44:54Speaker 2: What about DeShawn and is this.
- 44:56Speaker 3: Final ron step we need him to see him take
- 45:00Speaker 3: for us to get back believing in him again.
- 45:02Speaker 10: Well, I was one of those people who thought that
- 45:04Speaker 10: it would be interesting to see what this offense would
- 45:06Speaker 10: look like. And you don't want to see Nick Chubb
- 45:08Speaker 10: go down for the season, but without him being a
- 45:11Speaker 10: part of it and having more put on the Shawn's shoulders.
- 45:14Speaker 6: And so I was really encouraged by what I saw.
- 45:16Speaker 10: I know a lot of scouts I've talked to then
- 45:18Speaker 10: the offseason talked about the pressure on him and how
- 45:21Speaker 10: he's got to live up to that contract.
- 45:23Speaker 6: But he felt like, to me, a quarterback who was.
- 45:25Speaker 10: Trying to play his role in an offense that wasn't
- 45:28Speaker 10: really designed for him. You know, he's a wide open,
- 45:31Speaker 10: three four wide receiver type guy, throw football down the field,
- 45:35Speaker 10: improvise and sometimes it's hard to be what he was
- 45:38Speaker 10: being asked to be. When Chubb was healthy, and so,
- 45:41Speaker 10: I felt like he seemed more comfortable, He seemed more confident.
- 45:45Speaker 10: He knew that he was going to have to make
- 45:46Speaker 10: plays for this team to win. And he responded, I
- 45:48Speaker 10: mean it's still he had to keep saying he deserves
- 45:51Speaker 10: a past for all the time he missed, but he's
- 45:52Speaker 10: still figuring out how to get back.
- 45:54Speaker 6: To the level he was at before all that stuff
- 45:56Speaker 6: happened with him.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Yeah, they changed a lot from what they did in
- 46:00Speaker 1: that back end of the season with him last year,
- 46:02Speaker 1: and then this offseason has his input big time into
- 46:06Speaker 1: what they were gonna do with him and Kevin Stefanski
- 46:07Speaker 1: putting him in the gun pretty much every snap is
- 46:10Speaker 1: what Deshaun wants to do, and they're starting to listen
- 46:13Speaker 1: to that a little bit because he feels so comfortable
- 46:15Speaker 1: back there. What I'm curious about, Jeff, and we'll get
- 46:18Speaker 1: finished this up real quickly, is do you think a
- 46:20Speaker 1: performance like the one he had here? And then he
- 46:22Speaker 1: strings together a few of those. To me, the confidence
- 46:26Speaker 1: level might be the thing that changes. And then we
- 46:29Speaker 1: start seeing the player that we saw in the past.
- 46:31Speaker 6: Do you see that?
- 46:32Speaker 10: Oh yeah, no, doubt well, and be honest with you,
- 46:35Speaker 10: the way their defense is playing right now, I'm sure
- 46:38Speaker 10: he recognizes that I don't have to do it all
- 46:40Speaker 10: right now.
- 46:41Speaker 6: I've got a great defense.
- 46:42Speaker 10: I don't have to make all these phenomenal plays for
- 46:45Speaker 10: us to win games. Take care of the football, move
- 46:48Speaker 10: the team, give him the end zone. Let that de
- 46:50Speaker 10: go to work. They can win a lot of games
- 46:52Speaker 10: doing that. Yeah they will. And that's what we're going
- 46:56Speaker 10: to talk about next. Jeff, We're gonna have you on
- 46:58Speaker 10: next Monday. Maybe I'll have on Thursday, maybe.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Talking about the first three that length, because it's the
- 47:02Speaker 1: topics that I love the most in this show. I'm
- 47:04Speaker 1: not gonna lie these are. This is my favorite block
- 47:06Speaker 1: coming about to Miles Garrett as we close out the show,
- 47:09Speaker 1: jet Za, Buddy enjoy Tello Swift, Miles Garrett, three and
- 47:13Speaker 1: a half sacks. Also a play that Steve and I
- 47:17Speaker 1: have never seen before that isn't in the statue. More
- 47:21Speaker 1: Miles Scaret coming up on the NFL four. Welcome back
- 47:33Speaker 1: to the NFL Report, James Palmer, Steve White with you
- 47:36Speaker 1: as Steve. As we closed this out, we talk a
- 47:39Speaker 1: lot about Miles Garrett in the show, because what did
- 47:41Speaker 1: I say, what was my favorite offseason move in the
- 47:43Speaker 1: entire NFL?
- 47:44Speaker 3: That was Jim Schwartz, Jim Schwartz going to be his
- 47:46Speaker 3: That would be Schwartzy Jim Schwartz.
- 47:48Speaker 1: That would be Jim Schwartz going and teaming up with
- 47:52Speaker 1: Miles Garrett. Our thought was twenty sacks for Miles Garrett.
- 47:55Speaker 1: He had three and a half. He's getting himself towards
- 47:58Speaker 1: that number twenty. But what I want to talk to
- 48:01Speaker 1: you about is not the three and a half sacks.
- 48:04Speaker 1: I want to talk to you about a play that
- 48:06Speaker 1: was not in his stat line, and that is a
- 48:09Speaker 1: delay of game penalty Miles Garrett caused by going from
- 48:14Speaker 1: each end of the defensive line. He lines up on
- 48:17Speaker 1: one side. The Titans try to bring two players over
- 48:19Speaker 1: to match up and help out their tackle. He runs
- 48:22Speaker 1: over to the other side of a defensive line. The
- 48:24Speaker 1: Titans shift both those players back to the other side.
- 48:27Speaker 1: This goes back in fourth three times to the point
- 48:30Speaker 1: to what happens. The playcock runs out delay a game
- 48:33Speaker 1: on the Titans because of Miles Garrett. Have you ever
- 48:37Speaker 1: seen a play like that, Steve, in your life happen
- 48:41Speaker 1: at the NFL level?
- 48:42Speaker 2: Never, because typically it is okay.
- 48:45Speaker 3: An offensive player goes in motion, somebody follows him, the
- 48:49Speaker 3: strong side of the line'll shift over.
- 48:51Speaker 1: Something like that.
- 48:52Speaker 3: We saw this now on the defensive side, Miles Garrett.
- 48:55Speaker 3: It's a viral video. It's fantastic. Starts out on the
- 48:58Speaker 3: defensive web side two tight ends are there, he moves
- 49:02Speaker 3: over to the right side because that areas Smith, the
- 49:04Speaker 3: actual defensive end lines up on.
- 49:06Speaker 2: The left side.
- 49:06Speaker 3: Both tight ends follow him to the right side. Then
- 49:09Speaker 3: he's like, oh, this is how we're doing things. Let
- 49:11Speaker 3: him go back to the left side, and they both
- 49:14Speaker 3: go back. I've never seen anything like that. I don't
- 49:17Speaker 3: know why the Titans just didn't strongsided or do something
- 49:20Speaker 3: like this, but it was a weird call.
- 49:22Speaker 2: But it's because he's that disruptive JP.
- 49:24Speaker 3: You talked about last Thursday, how he's lining up over center.
- 49:27Speaker 2: He's wrecking shop. He has four and a half sacks
- 49:29Speaker 2: on the season.
- 49:30Speaker 3: But he's freeing up everybody else because Jim Schwartz is
- 49:33Speaker 3: moving him around like this. And now we're seeing all
- 49:36Speaker 3: of these absolutely insane reactions.
- 49:39Speaker 2: Because he is great.
- 49:41Speaker 3: To me, he is the leader in the house for
- 49:43Speaker 3: defensive player of the year.
- 49:45Speaker 2: Although TJ. Watt right now might also have something to
- 49:48Speaker 2: say about that.
- 49:50Speaker 1: I think you're exactly right. And you know, we talked
- 49:51Speaker 1: about the three and a half sacks. Talk about all
- 49:53Speaker 1: the sacks. How about this defense as a whole? Essentially
- 49:55Speaker 1: they've given up one touchdown. Steve in thirty four drive.
- 50:00Speaker 1: That's a decent outing for Jim Schwartz as he starts
- 50:03Speaker 1: his tenure as a defensive coordinator. Kevin Stemanski says, the
- 50:06Speaker 1: teams try to stop Nile's Garrett. What happens, He still
- 50:08Speaker 1: wrecks the game for Steve White. I'm James Palmer. This
- 50:11Speaker 1: was the NFL report on Monday. See it Thursday. As
- 50:15Speaker 1: we look at Week four,
