- 0:00Phillip, I'm not sure if you're aware of this.
- 0:02Probably I only wake you up for the important podcast meetings,
- 0:06but sometimes I go back and listen to our show for quality
- 0:09control. Sure.
- 0:10Well, one of your spammed Spotify accounts, right?
- 0:13And so we get the listens. Yes, exactly.
- 0:16Just to make sure there's no hard cuts, blunders.
- 0:19I don't end up ever fixing it. I do want to make people aware
- 0:23of some of my blunders because it's rather embarrassing.
- 0:26I think they're probably already aware.
- 0:28But you want to admit to them? Yeah, call them out.
- 0:31I don't want everyone else knowing I screw.
- 0:32Up. And I'm like oblivious.
- 0:33Oblivious. Yeah, OK.
- 0:35And it was from Looper, my most recent blunder.
- 0:38OK, near the end of the movie I said Emily Blunt's character
- 0:42will protect her son at no cost as opposed to at all costs.
- 0:49Yes, she will do it for free. Yeah.
- 0:53Cost her money? We don't know.
- 0:54Can't be guaranteed. Implying that maybe she wouldn't
- 0:57protect her son had it cost a few bucks.
- 1:00So do you think this is you coming back to your sales?
- 1:02You know, at no cost to you, Sir.
- 1:05I will throw in this case. There's always a cost, there's
- 1:09always hidden. Things.
- 1:10An emotional cost to spiritual cost.
- 1:13I don't miss the sales part of the world, but there's a lot
- 1:16more blunders that will come in the future.
- 1:18I just wanted to address that when the other reason I listen
- 1:20to our podcast is what helps me sleep at night.
- 1:22Oh yes, knocks me out. Our nice dulcet tones.
- 1:25They do it. They do it well.
- 1:27I've have on good authority that you're the only one that does
- 1:31that. Really.
- 1:31Yeah. OK.
- 1:32Everybody else is riveted river. That's part of their wake up
- 1:36juice. That's the first thing to do is.
- 1:38There when they get up in the morning coffee.
- 1:41And a little Phil and Dave. Yeah, wonderful.
- 1:43Great to hear. Yeah.
- 1:45Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf with Phil and Dave, the
- 1:50movie talk show where each week one of us takes a movie off our
- 1:52shelf, presents it to the other, and discusses it at length.
- 2:03This week we've got Coming off of My Shelf 1990 fives The
- 2:08American President, Directed by Rob Reiner, The Late great We'll
- 2:13Get Into That. Written by Aaron Sorkin.
- 2:16Starring Michael Douglas and Annette Benning, David Paymer,
- 2:21Michael J Fox, Martin Sheen, Martin Sheen, Richard Dreyfus.
- 2:27Absolutely coming out of nowhere.
- 2:29Oh my God, John Mahoney. Wendy.
- 2:31Malik, what did I do to deserve? This so many a cast of hundreds
- 2:35really coming off the shelf this week.
- 2:37Dave, welcome back to the Couch. Thank you.
- 2:39Great to be here. Much appreciated of course, I
- 2:42hope you're doing well. Not bad.
- 2:44And what do you know of this movie prior to and where your
- 2:48feelings coming out of? If you would have told me Bill
- 2:50Pullman is the star of this movie, I would have believed
- 2:53you. Well, somehow I got a mixed up
- 2:56Independence Day. Yeah, I think so, because he has
- 2:58played a president. But obviously it's a Michael
- 3:02Douglas film. It's it's pretty obvious.
- 3:04So my history of this movie is limited to the awareness of it,
- 3:10of his existence coming out in the mid 90s.
- 3:13It's about the president's. OK, Really.
- 3:15What is about? I assumed about a presidency and
- 3:19a romance, perhaps that his wife had passed.
- 3:22You thought that? Yeah.
- 3:23That I think I knew, but I don't even think I saw clips of it on
- 3:26the television set. OK.
- 3:28Either for yourself, I'm going to ask you a couple questions.
- 3:32Why this movie and why now? I don't know if you saw those
- 3:34questions coming. Wait a minute.
- 3:37Like what's your history of this movie?
- 3:39Was it on the black box? What have you.
- 3:41Yeah, mid 90s, definitely a black box sitch.
- 3:44Yeah, for sure. Frequent trailer I had at this
- 3:48time in my life. Was already hooked in movies in
- 3:51general, so this was right up my alley.
- 3:54Rob Reiner film, I alluded to it on the website.
- 3:58Just a phenomenal director. Made so many movies that I just
- 4:01loved. Worked on A Few Good Men with
- 4:03Aaron Sorkin as well, which came out a couple years prior, and
- 4:06then came up with this. You're sold.
- 4:07Totally sold on the idea of it anyway.
- 4:10And I thought the trailer was pretty good and I was pretty
- 4:12excited for it when it came out and when I saw it, I loved it.
- 4:15The writing I thought was really solid direction, solid cast.
- 4:19I was just like, yeah, I'm totally enamored of this movie.
- 4:21That's like the main trifecta, right?
- 4:23You get great performances, well written movie and it's well
- 4:26directed. You're in a pretty good.
- 4:27Spot. Totally, totally.
- 4:28And it lived up to all of that when I first saw it.
- 4:30And then it's only grown and esteemed since.
- 4:33Because as you may or may not be aware, Aaron Sorkin created The
- 4:36West Wing a few years after this.
- 4:38Did not know that. There's that and as a result,
- 4:42what the story is that he wrote like a 400 page screenplay for
- 4:45this. OK, Reiner and the producers and
- 4:48such all kind of went, we'll take these 95 pages and then
- 4:53basically Sorkin had 300 other pages that he used then to for
- 4:56the show as the basis for The West Wing and Martin Sheen
- 4:59transited. That's not the right word.
- 5:02No, that's save. Yourself.
- 5:03A Blogger called out right now, Yeah.
- 5:06Transition. Transition into President
- 5:08Bartlett. But even in that, he wasn't ever
- 5:10going to be the star of the show, OK, But he was so
- 5:14wonderful and actor and was so powerful as a president that he
- 5:17was like, yeah, we'll do it. He's he's magnetic.
- 5:19Absolutely, literally. So I was immediately hooked.
- 5:21And this movie is grown and esteemed since.
- 5:23And to get into the why now, obviously we joked at the end of
- 5:27last season that we hadn't done a lot of Michael Douglas movies
- 5:31and I. And that's a crime in some
- 5:32countries. Venezuela.
- 5:36And I loved Wonder Boys so much and certainly going over the
- 5:38best of and it was always in the brain and.
- 5:40So track of the year I think he gave.
- 5:42It so a long time ago, I called my shot.
- 5:45This was going to be the first movie of 2026.
- 5:47You did. I even watched it at one time
- 5:50before the end of the year. And then we got this terrible
- 5:53news. You were traveling.
- 5:55You may have found out a day before me.
- 5:58Even yeah, I was living at 22 hours in the future actually I
- 6:01was telling all my family what to.
- 6:02Expect. That's right.
- 6:03That's terrible. News is coming.
- 6:06Yeah. So it knocked me out.
- 6:07I don't know how you felt about the news.
- 6:10It ruined a day or two for me. This is gonna sound really
- 6:12selfish and self centred but that's, but I am.
- 6:16That's why that's who I am. But it was a big downer for me
- 6:19and it took a few days for me to kind of alright.
- 6:21Let's bring the energy. Bring the energy back, let's
- 6:24have a good time. But it was tough.
- 6:26And it was even tougher where I found out it happened right
- 6:30after a Conan O'Brien party. Oh, yes, yes, yes.
- 6:33You know, he's one of my favorite people.
- 6:35Bill Hader, another one of my favorite people.
- 6:38Now, I don't know what's true and what's not, but the fact
- 6:41that that party was real and it happened, that is true.
- 6:44I know. It just makes it even worse
- 6:46because these are people I like and they're probably going.
- 6:48Through a worldwind of emotions, being close to Rob and he's one
- 6:53of the nicest guys in Hollywood. Everyone says really, really sad
- 6:56situation. So yeah, it was pretty
- 6:58heartbreaking. And really, you know, you read
- 7:01of a 80 year old guy dying and you kind of almost accept that
- 7:06on its face. And then you read how he died
- 7:09and it just changes the entire. Conversation and after such an
- 7:12amazing career, yeah, what I know now that I've researched
- 7:15some of this films, he's done such a wide range of movie
- 7:20types. Well, just alone in our
- 7:22hierarchy at the end of this episode will have done Misery.
- 7:24Yes, of the Good Men and the American President and all three
- 7:28completely different films and all pretty darn good.
- 7:30That's right. And I just recently saw Spinal
- 7:32Tap, the sequel, and the guys got easily six or seven other
- 7:35movies that I think are incredible.
- 7:37In fact, I had already on the short list, picked another one
- 7:40of his films for later in the year.
- 7:41So OK, we'll revisit this guy's. Career he will live on
- 7:44absolutely in our in our hearts and in.
- 7:46Hollywood, it made me very happy that I selected this film.
- 7:49But I will say that certainly watching it beforehand and then
- 7:52watching it after, it's complete different experience.
- 7:54Yeah. And so close together, like
- 7:55literally within a few days of one another.
- 7:57I watched it once, terrible news.
- 7:59And I watched it again to take notes and feeling like well I
- 8:02don't know what the hell to say about this so.
- 8:03And it just proves officially that you're always trying to one
- 8:07up me. Because I had chosen Volcano
- 8:11before Tommy Lee's daughter had passed.
- 8:13That's true. Another sad coincidence.
- 8:16Absolutely terrible news. Very sad news.
- 8:18Such is life, my friend. Now, on a lighter note, David,
- 8:20what did Old Faithful have to say about this?
- 8:21Film. It's very good at cheering
- 8:23people up. IMDb says the following A
- 8:27widowed U.S. President running for reelection
- 8:30and an environmental lobbyist fall in love.
- 8:33It's all above board. But politics is perception.
- 8:37That's in quotations, and sparks fly anyway.
- 8:41Wow, you can't stop Sparks. No, Ask Michael Bay.
- 8:47Thank you for that you didn't like.
- 8:49That No, I think it's terrible. What would you say?
- 8:52I don't know. I mean, ultimately it is what it
- 8:55is. They fall in love, but the
- 8:56sparks fly and politics are perception.
- 8:58It just feels a little too cheeky, cheeky.
- 9:00So I don't appreciate that. You appreciate my initial
- 9:03thoughts. Absolutely.
- 9:05Well, you haven't heard them yet, so maybe you won't.
- 9:06I'm going to bank on yeah, putting all my money on yes.
- 9:10Oh wow, in the gambling mood. Yeah, absolutely.
- 9:14Passenger 57 always been on black.
- 9:15I'm going to say something here that's gonna blow your mind.
- 9:18OK, that's. Right.
- 9:19This is possibly the best movie in the last five years.
- 9:24Wow. You have brought off your shelf.
- 9:26Oh my God. And you have brought off some
- 9:28Oscar hits. Yes, some of the greatest movies
- 9:31ever made, arguably. Well, clearly you're arguing,
- 9:33but. They really like this movie.
- 9:37Amazing I I can't wait to dig into why.
- 9:40Me too. Maybe some self discovery
- 9:42because you insist that I have no heart, that I'm dead inside.
- 9:47I. Corroborate your version of
- 9:50reality. When you say I have no heart, I
- 9:51go yeah, you're right. Maybe.
- 9:53I had an epiphany. Wonderful. 2026 Here it comes.
- 9:56Yeah, but I really did. I can't wait that's.
- 9:58Amazing through and through. Anything that I say negative
- 10:02about this movie would probably qualify as a nitpick.
- 10:06Digging deep to say hey I don't like this interesting.
- 10:09So my name come up. I don't know if I'm in the.
- 10:11Mood. Yeah.
- 10:12Yeah. Wow.
- 10:14Well, that's wonderful. That warms my heart.
- 10:16Good. That's what.
- 10:18That's what. It means I get to take half a
- 10:20night off really, because most of the time I just fight to
- 10:23convince. You that you're wrong.
- 10:25We can wrap this up in about 20 minutes, not to get a lot of.
- 10:29Pushback. Wow.
- 10:29It's amazing. Yeah.
- 10:31So excited. What else gets me excited, Dave,
- 10:33is title sequences. Yeah.
- 10:36You wanna get right into it? I'm getting into the movie
- 10:38because now I know that I got a carte blanche.
- 10:40I gotta get in. There, Yeah.
- 10:42You're not a patient man. No foreplay here.
- 10:46That's what I heard. I I love that you're excited
- 10:49about it. So the title sequence, I love
- 10:50the score in this really fractious times in the world.
- 10:56There's a real moment despite the fact that I'm Canadian, but
- 11:00I have a lot of respect for the president and the history of
- 11:02that. The current one.
- 11:03No, I'm saying indigency, the position.
- 11:06And so the title sequence here, the sweeping nature of that, the
- 11:11grandiose, you know, presentation of what that office
- 11:14means and how it looks, I found very moving very quickly.
- 11:17I'm very much into this vibe. Yeah, I think the music goes a
- 11:20long way to help. Absolutely.
- 11:22Incredibly charming. It's a great score.
- 11:24I'm pretty sure this is a shaman.
- 11:26Yeah, Mark Shaman. Yes, right.
- 11:28Great composer. If you look at the credits.
- 11:30I mean, some great, great movies.
- 11:32His score for The Addams Family is one of my favorite scorers of
- 11:36all time. Certainly as a kid, I did the
- 11:38score for City Slickers, Mr. Saturday Night with David
- 11:40Paymer. A lot of Rob Reiner movies as
- 11:42well. Obviously this.
- 11:43He did A Few Good Men, Albert Brooks and so forth.
- 11:46So just a guy that's in the mood.
- 11:47He also worked on Mary Poppins Returns.
- 11:50Oh, that's pretty recent Rob Marshall movie.
- 11:52Amazing. Yeah.
- 11:53Yeah. Yeah.
- 11:53Rob Marshall. Yeah.
- 11:55He directed Chicago, which is available in the available in
- 11:58the archives. So, yeah, great score, really
- 12:01sets the scene. And as you know, title sequences
- 12:04get me hooked right away. And what hooks me right away,
- 12:06Phillip, you probably may be aware of this.
- 12:09Nicotine. You know patch is the names that
- 12:14pop up during the opening. Credits Ohf sure, this one in
- 12:18particular. I did not know Michael J Fox.
- 12:20Was in it one of your boys? Martin Sheen, I may have known,
- 12:24but it didn't surprise me. And like, OK, yeah, he belongs
- 12:26in the White House. Yes.
- 12:27And then we have names like John Mahoney, David Paymer, between
- 12:32that and the music. Yeah, you're like super prime.
- 12:35I'm ready. I'm comfortable where I'm
- 12:37sitting right now. I can see you very excited
- 12:39already, even talking about it. Yeah, it's a great bunch of
- 12:42people. And then, yeah, it hits the
- 12:43ground running. What I like about movies like
- 12:45this, and Sorkin has this ability used in The West Wing
- 12:48too, is that you're coming in mid conversation and you totally
- 12:51know what's happening. You're not lost.
- 12:53You're high on approval ratings. You just did the state.
- 12:56Of the Union or a speech. Speech.
- 12:58Something's dangling at the end. Something is just this thing.
- 13:02There's a thing hanging out there That's right.
- 13:04Michael J Fox. His character Lewis.
- 13:06Yeah. Who does not drink coffee, by
- 13:08the way. Yeah, my boy, I like.
- 13:10He's high strung. He's very high strung and I
- 13:12haven't seen a lot of Michael J Fox movies outside of the
- 13:15obvious. The trilogy, Yeah, sure.
- 13:17TV. Yeah, of course.
- 13:18Spin City, as it were, so it was really nice to see him here at
- 13:2295. I of course loved him in Teen
- 13:24Wolf and he was pretty good in The Frighteners.
- 13:26But yeah, he's definitely not a movie.
- 13:28You know, his sort of. It's mostly television over his.
- 13:30Later, yeah. And just when I think it
- 13:32couldn't get better when it comes to casting with Anne
- 13:34Haney. Come up here.
- 13:37Classic. Yeah Chapel.
- 13:39Great episode of TNG, buddy. Of course, great episode.
- 13:42I'll leave it there. A TNG reference.
- 13:44Interesting. Been awhile.
- 13:45As they're kind of bickering over the speech.
- 13:48Mr. Opportunity or whatever else is really just an introduction
- 13:51to the characters and how they relate to one another.
- 13:53But it's got a line in it that's repeated throughout, which is we
- 13:56fight the fights we can win, Lewis.
- 13:57And that as a mantra is shady because it just it limits what
- 14:03you're going to do, right? And we see that even in modern
- 14:06politics. Yeah, they keep saying the
- 14:08filibuster were you just say I'm not going to vote for it, and
- 14:11then you don't. Whereas in great movies like Mr.
- 14:15Smith Goes to Washington, directed by Frank Capra.
- 14:18Oh, there you go. That filibusters the crux of
- 14:21that movie. OK, And Jimmy Stewart has to
- 14:23speak. The rule of a filibuster is you
- 14:26just don't stop talking. As soon as you do, the vote
- 14:29comes. OK, I don't know what a
- 14:30filibuster. Is it's that you're basically
- 14:32blocking a vote and you're using all of the time you take the
- 14:36floor to speech? Yes, of course, which happened
- 14:39recently, right? Yeah.
- 14:40Yeah, Cory Booker did it for like earlier last year. 16 hours
- 14:44or something ridiculous or 18 hours?
- 14:45For him, I guess. I don't know.
- 14:47Yeah. You're just trying to fight back
- 14:48this shitty votes that are hurt the country.
- 14:51And now you just sort of, you just fight the fights you can
- 14:53win. So you don't bring the vote.
- 14:54You just, oh, we're not gonna win that one.
- 14:56We're not gonna write the law. We're not gonna vote the bill.
- 14:58We're gonna be moving on. Yeah, I mean, I get it.
- 15:01Sure, but you sometimes the point is the statement, right?
- 15:04Force the vote, get on record. You decided not to do this as
- 15:08opposed to everybody collectively saying we'll take a
- 15:12pass. Alright, so it stuck out to me
- 15:14is something that is pretty significant.
- 15:16The thing that really stuck out to me was when Leon David Paymer
- 15:20mentions that they keep moving that big ficus plant.
- 15:24Classic Dave observation, I tell you.
- 15:27The dialogue in this and the script is tight.
- 15:30Well, anytime you can throw a ficus into.
- 15:32There, I just like Palmers. He's great.
- 15:35He's great. Like AJ, his reaction to him, I
- 15:37love this closely knit team. It's a pretty magical thing,
- 15:41from performance, from writing and direction.
- 15:43I think that this film is mislabeled.
- 15:45I think it should be a fantasy. Yeah.
- 15:49She gets tall is a bit of a fable, Yeah.
- 15:52Like, I just don't think that chemistry amongst everybody
- 15:55exists now and that I mean a president like this, obviously
- 15:58if he was 100th of the Michael Douglas character here, we'd be
- 16:02in a much better. Position.
- 16:03I will say ultimately that this group really gets along and I
- 16:06would suggest that everybody in the current administration
- 16:09really gets along because they're all just jerking.
- 16:11Each other perhaps? Right.
- 16:12So I think it's actually more the combative with the other
- 16:15side than it is within. But I agree.
- 16:17But I'm sure it's done less majestically.
- 16:19And this is the thing with Sorkin You gets criticized for
- 16:21including the West, where it's a pie in the sky version of
- 16:24politics and there's nothing wrong with.
- 16:26It I don't think there's anything because it's a break.
- 16:28Yeah, right. This certainly time meant to
- 16:29entertain. So let's step back and enjoy it,
- 16:32right? The GDC, Yes.
- 16:44What does that stand for? Phil Global have to look that
- 16:48up. That's a matter.
- 16:50Of fact would have helped if they texted that on the screen
- 16:54to explain what they do. What does the doc do?
- 16:57It would have helped if you had prepped me for the question.
- 17:00That's what it would have helped.
- 17:01You didn't prepare me for the fact that Susan and Leo would be
- 17:06on the screen together and two years later they would be dating
- 17:09on Frasier. Who would have?
- 17:10Thought, who would have thought? Thank you for that.
- 17:12That's my gift. I love her.
- 17:14Wendy Malik, just shoot me. Thank you.
- 17:16With David Spade, she's just great character actor.
- 17:19You probably don't remember this because you actually watched a 2
- 17:21hour movie with her, but she is in Scrooged.
- 17:24I don't remember her in exactly. She plays his brother's.
- 17:26Wife. Yeah, she's been in a lot.
- 17:28She's always very, very good. But Leo, he wants a closer.
- 17:34Yeah, he needs an Andre Munoz. OK.
- 17:37He's a closer in baseball. Great.
- 17:39I guess. Hoffman, would you have got that
- 17:41reference? If you had said you're a
- 17:43Sedgwick I would have understood.
- 17:45Oh, is that from Major League? Or no, Dear Cedric is an actor
- 17:49in The Closer the OHS. Though I'm doing baseball.
- 17:52Here, buddy. Yeah, going the other way.
- 17:54Alright. I'm bringing TV into the
- 17:56conversation for the first time in a year and a half.
- 17:58I should let me roll. With yeah, this will be a good
- 18:00opportunity to talk about West Wing.
- 18:02I would imagine. Right.
- 18:04Well, the clothes are in question.
- 18:05Is Annette Benning playing Sydney Ellen Wade.
- 18:07Which, I have to tell you, despite my love of this movie,
- 18:10it really bothers me that they continually use her three names.
- 18:14Oh, yeah. Just repetitive.
- 18:15I like the sort of lyricism of it.
- 18:17Sydney, Ellen Wade, the only way that's fine, but she's also just
- 18:21Sydney, you know, or even sit. Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:23So that it's a minor quibble. It's a it's a minor nitpick.
- 18:27But as I'm saying, even out loud, she will be sitting
- 18:29probably from here on out. But I do like the introduction.
- 18:32I love Annette Benning. She's in Bugsy just prior to
- 18:34this, the Grifters, American Beauty, a couple years after
- 18:37this Oscar for that role. I would say she's been nominated
- 18:41a few times but never won unfortunately.
- 18:43And this is great that early in our season we're getting some
- 18:46nice female. Performance.
- 18:49Yeah, we got her. And Susan, it's not.
- 18:52Right. Wendy Malik.
- 18:54Don't be surprised if Wendy Malik comes up in 12 months.
- 18:58Her character actually in Seinfeld was Wendy.
- 19:00She had the hair. That's right.
- 19:01Yeah. Yeah, she wasn't that I remember
- 19:03vividly. So was AJ's wife, Esther.
- 19:05Esther. OK, alright, I'll leave that
- 19:07there. Save me doing it later.
- 19:11Oh, thank goodness, thank goodness.
- 19:13But she's going on a Jag about how ineffective this president
- 19:16has been. And we get a sense that
- 19:19Douglass's got a little sense of humor.
- 19:21Let's take him out back and kick the.
- 19:22Shit out of him. What a great line.
- 19:24It immediately diffuses the situation.
- 19:25Well this movie does really well is it sets those scenes up
- 19:29perfectly. Just before Jay is like you
- 19:31should stop by, just you. Know put your put a nice face.
- 19:35On it, yeah. And then boom, instead of him
- 19:36just showing up good structure. It's great structure, right.
- 19:39And that's. Working.
- 19:40She's really excellent. I'm starting to think that I'm
- 19:43starting to get on board, Buddy West Wing, seven seasons, he
- 19:46wrote four of them. But.
- 19:47Yeah, maybe I need a new series. So get in there.
- 19:50It's a talent, and the performances are just so winning
- 19:53that it completely gets me hooked.
- 19:55And he's clearly smitten. He smitten?
- 19:58Yeah. Makes a deal with her that he'll
- 20:01do 20% if she gets 24 votes. Yeah, 34 total.
- 20:05You'll get the other 10. That's right.
- 20:07So we get the stakes of the movie, what little plot there is
- 20:10in these kind of talky kind of characters movies that I like to
- 20:13watch so often. But this is the plot.
- 20:16Ultimately, it's the battle for the environmental lobby versus
- 20:20the crime bill, which we've alluded to.
- 20:21That this crime bill is number one on the president's agenda.
- 20:24It's really Sydney versus Lewis in a sense, correct?
- 20:27You'll see a little bit later, but for now, she's just gonna go
- 20:30out the wrong door. Yeah, she gonna struggle.
- 20:32Struggle. It's funny.
- 20:33And what this movie does really well, Phil.
- 20:35Flows. Like a river.
- 20:39Yep. Don't argue you know rivers.
- 20:41Flow. Absolutely.
- 20:42Absolutely. Find me a river doesn't flow
- 20:44buddy. I don't think I can.
- 20:45There's a song called When the River Flows.
- 20:47Yeah, yeah, It's instrumental. It's on my playlist.
- 20:49Wonderful. What isn't on my playlist is
- 20:51Doctor Seuss. I am on fire today.
- 20:54Yeah, crushing it. Do you play pool?
- 20:56Yeah. You any good, pretty good sober
- 20:59or do you need to have a couple drinks into you?
- 21:01I have had a drink in 16 years for you.
- 21:04Trying to one up you guys. No, I'm fine as it is.
- 21:08Yeah, I was always better, like in the zone.
- 21:10That's what you like. I think it's a, well, I think
- 21:12it's a common thing if you talk to guys generally, like not too
- 21:15drunk, but there's a couple and I take the edge off.
- 21:17Yeah, I've never really had that trouble, but I've never been
- 21:19like that good. I'm like, I'm perfectly
- 21:21serviceable. Would you beat Uncle?
- 21:23Phil, probably. Yeah, With a stick.
- 21:26Gonna do a fight at a pool hall. Oh, really?
- 21:28Yeah. That was when I was drunk.
- 21:31That's why you quit. And I saw a guy stretching.
- 21:34OK. And I just could not let that
- 21:35abide. So I was in the corner watching
- 21:38this guy and his group of Bros and a couple of chicks and I
- 21:42just chirped him from across the room.
- 21:44Why is he stretching? Exactly.
- 21:45So I'm just like, what are you stretching for him, pussy,
- 21:49anyway? Just berating him over and over
- 21:51again. And everybody just kept looking
- 21:53at me. Well, I could.
- 21:54Have used you on that plane ride with that guy Yeah, turned
- 21:56around. That's right, break that guy.
- 21:58But yeah, I was a little more antagonistic, looking for a
- 22:00fight. Sometimes my group of guys was
- 22:03telling me to shut. Up a lot.
- 22:04You're like Woody Woodpecker little bit.
- 22:06Well shit. Disturber stirring the pot.
- 22:09Good for you. But anyways, this is just a
- 22:11great scene for Martin Sheen. Yeah, I guess the step up is the
- 22:15first moment in the. Movie he will not call him Andy.
- 22:17No, Mr. President all the way. I just love this relationship.
- 22:20He was the best man and he's wedding.
- 22:24Ironically, I don't like the name Andy.
- 22:26Oh, interesting. For a president, it sounds too
- 22:28casual. Gotcha.
- 22:30Didn't really fit Michael Douglas.
- 22:32Yeah, that's a nitpick. Imagine if it was MM Trevor
- 22:39perhaps? President Trevor, you think
- 22:42Richard? Richard, this is that other
- 22:44thing that's missing, obviously in the current state of affairs.
- 22:47So when you have this reverence for the presidency that you are
- 22:50Mr. President, it isn't Andy, it isn't Andrew, it isn't my buddy,
- 22:53it isn't my pal. You are the president.
- 22:55And in The West Wing, he gets everybody to call him that and
- 22:59he's like, it's not personal. It's not like to stroke my ego.
- 23:02It's just because I need to feel like I am that guy.
- 23:05I'm not Andy. When I'm making this decision, I
- 23:07am president. You want.
- 23:09Separate that. My love of The West Wing is so
- 23:11much ingrained into that, and obviously it's emanating from
- 23:13this movie originally. But we do find out that he wants
- 23:17to make a phone call. Yeah.
- 23:19To Annette Benning's character. Yeah, maybe slide a note and
- 23:224th. Period.
- 23:23Exactly. Love that.
- 23:24So despite the fact that he will not call him Andy, he can be a
- 23:27little sarcastic. Yeah, you want a little nitpick
- 23:30though? I've got one.
- 23:31Oh yeah, I have two. More or less maybe.
- 23:33Three, I want to hear him, just out of curiosity.
- 23:35This one is 1, OK, he says. I wish you would call me Andy.
- 23:40And I think to myself, they've been friends, or at least he's
- 23:44been the president, if he's coming up on reelection for four
- 23:46years, three years or three years, you know, as you know, I
- 23:49get a little bump on things that are like.
- 23:52Oh, you've had this conversation?
- 23:53But like, this is the first time you've had this conversation
- 23:56despite the fact you've been in this role for four years and
- 23:58whatever. So it's a little bit of that
- 24:00like this is movie moment so that they can have this
- 24:03exchange. Oh, you're getting that?
- 24:05But ultimately, I'm like, come on, you have now been Mr.
- 24:10President three plus years. I always forget that you're not
- 24:13talking right now about why don't you call me Andy?
- 24:15No, you're not having that. Conversation once again for the
- 24:18final time. Could you call me Andy?
- 24:20We keep having this. Conversation every year we go
- 24:22around. Anyway, but they deliver it so
- 24:24well. Absolutely.
- 24:24There's no problem with it because it's it is.
- 24:26It's so perfectly executed. They can say whatever they want.
- 24:30I'm buying. I do think it's kind of cute
- 24:32that once he gets permission, seemingly from AJ, to reach out,
- 24:36he goes to the FBI to get the phone number.
- 24:39How did you find me? You know this and that.
- 24:41You dial this number and when you get the White House.
- 24:44Well, yeah, cause the problem is Richard is a riot.
- 24:46That's right. And that's her friend.
- 24:47Such a riot. And he makes prank phone calls
- 24:49apparently. That's right, he can do voices.
- 24:53It's a good exchange between the two of them, and it adds that
- 24:55chemistry and that kind of cuteness in this ROM com moment.
- 24:59It's one of the best phone call movie moments I've seen in a
- 25:02while. Wow, high praise.
- 25:04There you go. So many phone calls and Love
- 25:05Actually that you weren't a fan of.
- 25:07So exactly. I think only Phone Booth does it
- 25:10better. I know I've made that joke
- 25:12before doing it again. Yeah, sure.
- 25:15I watched this with my wife. I figured she'd like this movie.
- 25:18I said I got to watch this movie.
- 25:19I have to. I don't have a choice.
- 25:20It's like, is it a fill pick? It's like, yeah, I think I'm
- 25:23busy, but I really felt that she was going to enjoy the movie.
- 25:27But what she said about the scene is he didn't make his
- 25:30intentions clear. I thought, let me ask Phil, let
- 25:33me ask the professional movie watcher.
- 25:35I thought it was pretty clear that this was a date.
- 25:38Yeah, I think dinner pretty clear.
- 25:39What would the other intention? Be I'm not sure.
- 25:41What else would you invite someone over to the White House
- 25:44for? A ballroom?
- 25:45You know, like that Feels like that's a date.
- 25:47Don't know what else it would be.
- 25:48So we argued all night about that.
- 25:51That's her nitpick. Yeah, totally.
- 25:52I find their chemistry to be bang on.
- 25:54Let's just sort of blanket address it, yeah.
- 25:57Do you feel that this is a relatable or viable
- 26:02relationship? In the movie.
- 26:03Because you sometimes had questions with that stuff.
- 26:06Oh, these guys are supposed to be in a trunk or not.
- 26:07Yeah. My only thing I will question is
- 26:11it happened a little bit quick. 90 minute movie.
- 26:14Yeah, but I'm thinking they're doing everything else like bang
- 26:17on. Yeah.
- 26:18I mean, yeah, I'm going to enjoy this ride, I think.
- 26:21I think it helps that Annette Benning is beautiful.
- 26:23She has short hair, Phillip, as you could.
- 26:26I watched it. You watched it.
- 26:27You noticed that? And I'm not about the short
- 26:30hair, so I couldn't connect. And of course it's red, so you
- 26:34know how I feel about that. Absolutely.
- 26:36So it was like looking in the mirror and I wouldn't date
- 26:39myself about a million years. No, got a lot of.
- 26:42Problems, but I imagine he could find her attractive.
- 26:45I mean, I think in objective world you can look and say she's
- 26:47pretty. Yeah, even if it's not my type
- 26:49exactly. Would like to hope I'm mature
- 26:51case I could, yeah, I'm willing. So because of that, and he's
- 26:55obviously charming. And then you've got the all of
- 26:57the White House, the spectacle of it that a lot of all I find
- 26:59that that relationship to be pretty convincing.
- 27:02And certainly right away when they're at the ballroom doing
- 27:05all that dancing, I'm like, yeah, no wonder it's working.
- 27:08Well, it doesn't hurt that she could also speak French.
- 27:11Yeah, yeah. Yeah, she calls out that they
- 27:12look pretty bored and my God, did they rob Reiner's like, OK,
- 27:16guys look bored, Yes, and they nailed.
- 27:18It if one thing the French can. Do is look bored?
- 27:22Exactly. And we, if you will.
- 27:24And Esther can only speak Latin. That's very important.
- 27:27That's right. Now what's going on in the
- 27:28background while this beautiful scene is happening?
- 27:32We have established just before that Senator Rumson, he's sort
- 27:36of found the in. Now he's figured out a way
- 27:39Christmas has come early. They're looking for an angle for
- 27:43his campaign course. Absolutely.
- 27:45And now the president has a girlfriend and that, he says, is
- 27:48his in. His introduction, He's friendly,
- 27:51yeah. He doesn't say anything
- 27:52negative. No, not.
- 27:53Yet. But Richard Dreyfus, he's good
- 27:55at playing Swarmy. Totally.
- 27:57Like, I know that this guy is the antagonist.
- 27:59Yeah, without being given any dialogue to tell me he is.
- 28:02Yeah. I mean, that's good movie
- 28:03making. But of course.
- 28:04And his name didn't even pop up in the opening credits.
- 28:07No, it's a nice is. That, yeah.
- 28:09So if you can get the guy to play this relatively small role,
- 28:12this is going to elevate your movie that much more.
- 28:15I agree. I.
- 28:15Buy them as the senator and I buy them as the worst kind of
- 28:18type of person. So yeah, those two things he
- 28:21brings to the table that gravitas.
- 28:33So do you know any state flowers?
- 28:35I know you're a Canadian. You made that out really clear
- 28:38at the beginning of this episode and over the last five years.
- 28:40Well, I know the provincial flower, of course, the Trillium
- 28:42for us, for Ontario. Oh OK, I thought was the Beaver
- 28:46that is not a. Flower.
- 28:46That is not a flower, that's the animal.
- 28:48Right, yeah, and that's a Canadian thing, not so much a
- 28:51provincial thing. Moose the Loon.
- 28:57But no, I don't know any. State flowers, necessarily other
- 29:00than a dagwood, of course. Is it dagwood?
- 29:02I wrote down Dogwood. Dogwood.
- 29:04Was it Dogwood, which is also a tree?
- 29:06Thanks to David Paymer. Yeah, nowadays you just Google
- 29:10that some bitch, you're fine. But 95 you got to get 6 people
- 29:14on. It that's a cute little scene.
- 29:15It's cute and he wants to do it himself and I applaud that.
- 29:18He doesn't want to have somebody else do it.
- 29:20And Jeannie so. Confused.
- 29:22You don't just do this. I can do this.
- 29:24You just want the number. She can't fathom this.
- 29:27Situation totally she just plays out really well.
- 29:30She's great. Samantha Mathis of pump up the
- 29:32volume phase. Ohhh, there it is.
- 29:33That's wasn't. Sure.
- 29:35She's in a bunch of things. The American Psycho, actually,
- 29:37which I referred to yesterday, wasn't yesterday.
- 29:40Not even in real life it was. Recently.
- 29:43It's always a safe recently, but Robin and Lewis are pretty sure
- 29:47this is Sidney related. Yeah, sure.
- 29:50Look up the Virginian flower. Sure.
- 29:53But the president insists Sydney is not an issue.
- 29:56Nothing to worry. About unless it's something
- 29:57happening in Australia. So that was a a happy accident.
- 30:01When you're name choosing, yes, yes you can use that, not
- 30:05Sydney, NS. No, no, no, no, we established.
- 30:07You did mention there was. One.
- 30:09There is one, yeah. Absolutely.
- 30:10I knew that from Cross Country Canada, the old computer game.
- 30:12OK, I was on the map. Along with Flin Flon, Manitoba.
- 30:16Oh yeah, everyone loves the Flim flam.
- 30:18The whole purpose of this sending the flowers, of course,
- 30:21is to get another date. Of course, second date rules.
- 30:23That's why I never got a second date.
- 30:24That's right, forgot about the flower with the flowers.
- 30:27So we got her back at the White House.
- 30:29He came there to break it off. Yeah, let's not forget that.
- 30:32That's right. Crumbled.
- 30:33Thinks it's a bad idea? It is.
- 30:35It turns out to be. Well.
- 30:37But she shows up anyway and he gives it a $0.25 tour.
- 30:41Yeah. You can't break up with someone
- 30:43after the $0.25 tour. Is that a fact?
- 30:46Just doesn't. Happen.
- 30:46Why wouldn't break up with someone after a meatloaf night?
- 30:49I would give that at least 48 hours.
- 30:51Like, come on. They go around, they do the dish
- 30:54room, they talk about. I think it's a cute scene.
- 30:57It fortifies their relationship, but it's really a stopgap
- 31:00measure before we get into the next kind of meaty scene.
- 31:03Yeah, this is 1 where there's been an attack.
- 31:06Big tone change here, and it really gets a little darker, a
- 31:10little bit more meaningful and a little less jovial.
- 31:13Yeah. The right word.
- 31:14Jovial. Yeah.
- 31:15I mean. Little uptempo, certainly.
- 31:17Yeah, cause we're coming right off of their first kiss.
- 31:19Exactly. And then, you know, the Libyans
- 31:20bombing C is dead. Yeah, that's not good.
- 31:24No lesbians again. God damn.
- 31:26Michael J Fox and the Libyans. Let me tell you.
- 31:28But this is an amazing scene. Tell me why.
- 31:31Because he's just so presidential.
- 31:34Or not. Or not, it turns out.
- 31:36And also it made me realize that Stan could not be president.
- 31:39Who? Stan.
- 31:40Come on. Ohf.
- 31:41Stan Sir. From volcano, Yeah.
- 31:43Cause he's all worried about the little guy.
- 31:45So there's no way he's going to let Eddie Custodian die.
- 31:49Yeah. So he could not be president.
- 31:51No, certainly could not make this call.
- 31:53He couldn't. No, no.
- 31:55But in all seriousness, I just love the humanity that he brings
- 31:59to this moment. And he articulates this in the
- 32:01very next scene in the other room when David Paymer.
- 32:04Because you're doing something really presidential, we should
- 32:06take advantage of this. Yeah.
- 32:07That's the problem with politics, generally speaking, is
- 32:10that humanity is often stripped out, and you're trying to find
- 32:14big wins. You're trying to find
- 32:15opportunities to tout and pound your chest a little bit.
- 32:17And success. Absolutely.
- 32:19And they use the terms proportional response.
- 32:22They do this. So we do that.
- 32:23There's a certain element of this is so trivial.
- 32:27And the humanity of the writing and the performance of Douglas,
- 32:30where he gets to distill all of the gloating and the high fiving
- 32:34of success. Yeah, of this presidential move.
- 32:36You're gonna get a three-point bump because you're showing your
- 32:39strength of the country and yadda, yadda.
- 32:42The fundamental truth is some guy across the world has no idea
- 32:46that he's going to go and punch in for his work and in three
- 32:49hours he's going to be. Dead.
- 32:50And just to cap it off, when Sydney comes to see him, she
- 32:54says all you're having a bad day and like somebody's having a
- 32:56worse day. He doesn't get into details, but
- 33:00he's just carrying over that. It weighs on him.
- 33:02Yeah, exactly. That this does affect them out
- 33:05on a human level. Luckily he gets over it pretty
- 33:08quickly when she shows up in a white YEAH dress shirt.
- 33:11Did you see that coming? No, I mean you assume that
- 33:14there's gonna be some. Coitus to use the a Sheldon.
- 33:17Term There's two things about this scene I really like.
- 33:19The first is I think she's really cute in the shirt, who
- 33:21isn't exactly me. Not a good look on a man.
- 33:25But secondly, I like that he tries to preface this
- 33:29distinction between a I haven't done it in awhile and B the most
- 33:33powerful man in the world. That's a job, not a person.
- 33:36Translate into this. So I thought that was really
- 33:38clever and fun way to play it. Yeah.
- 33:40And it's very humbling for him to this moment.
- 33:42Yeah. And Douglas is not a guy that
- 33:43tends to play a lot of humble. Obviously, Wonder Boys, we did
- 33:46that. But he did 20 years of his
- 33:48career. Was being Gordon Gecko in Wall
- 33:50Street a guy that never fails, a guy that's the sexiest guy?
- 33:53Disclosure. And falling down.
- 33:55Exactly right. And obviously Wonder Boys later,
- 33:57but this one where he gets to be humbled enough to say that line
- 34:01as opposed to the sexual Dynamo that he was in Basic Instinct,
- 34:04just yeah, right. Like he's that guy and Fatal
- 34:07Attraction and so here he gets to be a different character,
- 34:10which is nice and. Refreshing.
- 34:11He's got range and if I didn't know that before Wonder Boys, I
- 34:15may not love that movie, but it wasn't because of his
- 34:18performance. He played that character really
- 34:20well. Totally, and it also sets up for
- 34:23another great scene. Yeah, your favorite?
- 34:25Actually, top three, he gets a phone call at 5:00 AM.
- 34:28I believe it is. Lewis comes in first, followed
- 34:30by Robin, perfectly timed. A little bit later.
- 34:34It's AJ. We're having an early start
- 34:36today, aren't we? Just those throwaway lines.
- 34:39And I just love the dynamic between these three people.
- 34:43Yeah, it's just perfect. And I love Douglas.
- 34:45I love what his character is doing as well and it's just a
- 34:48great. Scene Yeah, they're trying to
- 34:50protect him from the press who's camped out.
- 34:52And that's their instinct, right?
- 34:54But it's fine. Plays it really for laughs.
- 34:55And like you're saying, you get the sense these guys are all in
- 34:58it together, let's say. Yeah, did you like what he says
- 35:01to her? Say whatever you want.
- 35:02Yeah, of course. What's interesting, I think the
- 35:04movie is wrestling with fundamentally is that this is
- 35:07the politics is perception thing is that you can be quiet, but
- 35:10that space in that environment will get taken up by something
- 35:14else. Yes, that vacuum will be open.
- 35:17So I actually think it's really naive to think that this is no
- 35:21big deal. As he continues to say, and I
- 35:22get it's the movie. It's the point of the movie.
- 35:24He's in love, right? Yeah.
- 35:25And he's. Exactly.
- 35:26It's a personal thing. But when you're in this world,
- 35:28particularly in the 90s but certainly now, you don't get
- 35:32days off, you don't get the benefit of the doubt.
- 35:34You are scrutinized morning, noon and night.
- 35:37You're in a Dyson sphere. Absolutely.
- 35:39Brand of a vacuum. OK in this space.
- 35:42Yeah. And it's a TNG reference.
- 35:44OK, you will not get. Absolutely not.
- 35:46But luckily none of our listeners will either.
- 35:49I'm sure one will. My brother will if he's
- 35:51listening. But setting that up and creating
- 35:55that vacuum is causing Shepherd's numbers to dip.
- 35:58I think eight points, I think it was.
- 36:00Something like that. He was so far ahead, right?
- 36:02He's not you. No problem. 61 approval rating,
- 36:04he can do whatever he wants. But throughout all of this,
- 36:07Rumson is working around, and they've got art.
- 36:09They do have parts. They have a picture of a burning
- 36:12flag and Sydney with that flag. Yes, she's present, certainly.
- 36:18Yeah, that could be problematic. The the one bit of naivete of
- 36:22this movie is that nobody seems to think anything is wrong.
- 36:25Michael Douglas. Yeah.
- 36:26That. Yeah, Yeah.
- 36:28Like his approach is whatever and everybody around him is
- 36:32saying it's a thing. And if the performances weren't
- 36:35as winning and the writing is strong, I think that would
- 36:38probably get to me. It would start to piss me.
- 36:40Yeah, I think so. I'm not a political Wiz.
- 36:43Like I pay attention so forth. But watching it, I think you're
- 36:47an idiot and at some point it would feel like you're an.
- 36:50Idiot, I think because he's in love.
- 36:54And I think love is blinding, so I don't.
- 36:56I don't think he's realizing his own naivety.
- 36:59Naivete. Naivete.
- 37:01Thank you, Phil, but it also isn't the first story, buddy.
- 37:03It's #3. Sure, with the bullet.
- 37:06It's alright, but this is also the moment where it's stopping
- 37:10for flowers. And Michael J Fox is like, no
- 37:13hopping. You you want to hop out and get
- 37:15some flowers? No hopping.
- 37:16Hopping in and out. Coopers like are we doing this?
- 37:18And he's like, do you think that someone has been camping out at
- 37:21the possibility? That the president is going to
- 37:22come into this, that's funny. This movie has moments of comedy
- 37:26that are just sprinkled throughout.
- 37:28It's really uplifting. Yeah, until now, really.
- 37:31Ultimately because they end up at camp.
- 37:32David, Camp David, I don't think he should be at Camp David
- 37:35watching TV. That's like being in New Zealand
- 37:37and watching Netflix. But I do appreciate the TV and
- 37:41the wood, like the classic. I joke with my wife said you
- 37:45want to visit Camp David? I can go get a tent, break it
- 37:48down the basement here. We can hang out.
- 37:50Camp David, you have a little giggle.
- 37:52Out of that, that's cute. It was cute.
- 37:54But ultimately, what isn't cute is Rumson calls Sidney a whore.
- 37:58Yeah, that wasn't very. Nice.
- 38:00Oh, my dad heard that. There's work.
- 38:03Yeah. And that's.
- 38:04Tough. I think the worst part is he
- 38:05still doesn't know if the Packers won.
- 38:07Yeah, that's. Important is probably not a now.
- 38:11Very strong team, buddy, strong team.
- 38:14But she does drop the album. Yes, I'm going to fumble this.
- 38:17She didn't really fumble it. Either not like the Packers
- 38:21killing left and right did a 95 lot of fumbling problems in 95
- 38:24but she loves him. But we realize throughout all of
- 38:27this she actually has a job. She works for Leo.
- 38:29She ends up revealing accidentally to AJ and Oh yeah,
- 38:34president at the Christmas party at the Christmas party that she
- 38:37had a meeting with the Motown 3 about this fairly and two other
- 38:41people. That's all I remember, Chelios.
- 38:45I'm a Guinness. But yeah, she makes a glib
- 38:47comment that the only bill that they hated more than the crime
- 38:51bill was this other one. Yeah, and that gets AJ
- 38:55percolating. I was a little bit confused at
- 38:57the politics of it. I don't quite get it, but I
- 38:59figured out that I second watch. I get it now.
- 39:01The math added up. You're going to sacrifice.
- 39:04The one bill in favor of the. Other I'm thinking, why can't
- 39:06you do both? Bills can't do it.
- 39:07And I realize I'm not a Bills fan.
- 39:10I'm a Patriots fan. But yeah, she seemed crabby too.
- 39:13She wasn't in a good. Mood.
- 39:14She just got torn up and down by the Motown.
- 39:17Three. Well, it's more about the Dupont
- 39:18Circle. Oh, that's true.
- 39:19That's hell. It's always hell.
- 39:21Can't get left put a pin in that by the way, but sets up the next
- 39:25wave of the movie. Ultimately, is now this.
- 39:27Race yeah, Sydney versus Lewis. Really.
- 39:29And then Lewis is on the down. So they're struggling to find
- 39:32the votes now for the crime bill.
- 39:34Yeah. And they have this knowledge in
- 39:36the back pocket. If it gets dicey, they can cash
- 39:39in. Yeah.
- 39:40Now we know it's going to get to that, of course.
- 39:42Movie making. Exactly.
- 39:43Come on, the energy picks up. I really like the vibe.
- 39:45And again, everybody is so winning and charming that I'm in
- 39:48this. Lewis isn't winning that phone
- 39:50call oht gosh papers like I hope that's not an undecided or you
- 39:54gotta work on your people skills.
- 39:55Chicken shit, lame ass vote your conscience.
- 39:58Yeah, but they're in the room together discussing and Shepherd
- 40:01is like, well, what about this guy?
- 40:02What about that guy? What about clerk?
- 40:04No, the other clerk and he's coming to the realization.
- 40:08That all those friends are leaving the homestead.
- 40:10Here, he's going to have to make a pretty big decision.
- 40:14But before he makes that decision, Phil to get a showcase
- 40:17scene from Michael J Fox. And I thought this was really
- 40:20powerfully written and really powerfully delivered and top
- 40:25three scenes. Alright, yeah, it's an excellent
- 40:28moment for the movie to again take a pause, reset the clock.
- 40:33Let's get serious. And Louis throughout the whole
- 40:35movie has been the poker, right? He's trying to prod the
- 40:39president into these positions and so far has been rebuffed and
- 40:44can't take it anymore. What does it tell you that your
- 40:46poll, your character values, your family values is being
- 40:49questioned? Yeah.
- 40:50And he's like, nothing. This poll isn't talking about my
- 40:52presidency, is talking about my life.
- 40:54And. Yeah.
- 40:54And everybody around him knows they're not separate when you're
- 40:57at that stage of the game. And Lewis having the battle of
- 41:00the the sand analogy. Yeah.
- 41:02They're seeking leadership. And it's as if they're in the
- 41:05Oasis and they'll drink the sand.
- 41:07And the absence of anything else, which is Rumson is the
- 41:10sand That's. Well, basically he's filling it
- 41:12up, right. In the absence of leadership,
- 41:15people will drink the sand. And you know, basically in the
- 41:17modern age, to me, it's the current situation exactly.
- 41:21People are feeling that disenchanted, disoriented,
- 41:23disenfranchised, frustrated, annoyed.
- 41:26And the previous president just didn't have the oratory skills
- 41:31to engage. He just wasn't a great
- 41:33communicator above all. And so when you're doing great
- 41:36things and you can't tell people you're doing great things, you
- 41:38can't communicate or you can't empathize with doing the wrong
- 41:41thing, have the humility to say that's the least presidential
- 41:44thing I've ever done. So it's a great scene.
- 41:46It allows for, let's say, some things that I think are really
- 41:49important generally. Cause he's a voter too, right?
- 41:51That's it. You're my president.
- 41:53But he starts it all off by saying I've never met a
- 41:55president who has a deeper love for this country.
- 41:58And I just love how he'll give it to him.
- 42:00But on both sides of things, totally.
- 42:02And it's all out of respect for the country.
- 42:04It's all out of respect for the presidency, the position, the
- 42:07person that this guy believes in, right?
- 42:09Not attacking him, but I love how AJ seems to try to keep a
- 42:13bit of a leash. Lewis I love that.
- 42:16Relationship. And that's the thing he says.
- 42:18You be quiet. He's not.
- 42:20Doesn't work for you. Yeah.
- 42:21So yes, he does. So just a great.
- 42:23Dynamic Great Dane everybody and Douglas shoots him down and says
- 42:27you know, they drink the same cause they don't know the
- 42:29difference. And when I was younger, I didn't
- 42:31really understand what that meant, to be honest.
- 42:33I wasn't a great comeback. But what I interpret that as is
- 42:37people are ignorant, generally speaking.
- 42:39It's not a judgment, it's just reality.
- 42:42We pay very little attention to these things or to the
- 42:45headlines, and we read the ditties and the whatever.
- 42:48Hey now, it's it was a good documentary.
- 42:53And those things get attention and they get go Fund Me's.
- 42:56And people are pledging millions of votes to American Idol, but
- 43:00you know, 36% of the population vote for president.
- 43:03I wish there was that high. Right like that kind of reality
- 43:06so they don't they drink the sand because they can't tell the
- 43:09difference like you're saying with Mr. T at 98.
- 43:11What is the difference between what is real and what is AI?
- 43:15What is it looks made-up fabricated alternate facts,
- 43:18which is a term we heard a lot of IN201617 right like this
- 43:22alternate facts. We've offered alternate versions
- 43:24like. Can't tell the difference.
- 43:26I went to an exhibition in Melbourne and it was this whole
- 43:29thing at the library on misinformation.
- 43:31Oh yeah, that was quite interesting.
- 43:33Could you trust it? That's right.
- 43:36I know. At least it's out there like
- 43:38people are recognizing that this is an issue and we need to.
- 43:42Address it well, at least people in Australia.
- 43:43Are fighting it out well they're the ones they're putting laws
- 43:46against kids being on social media and it's like would you
- 43:48give a drivers license to a 12 year old no no one argues the
- 43:52fact that. You're unable to process the
- 43:55real world and at that age or whatever.
- 43:57But people think, no, you're the freedom of you shouldn't be
- 43:59putting rules like you have no problem with a drivers license,
- 44:03people have no problem with the drinking age.
- 44:05So why do you have a problem with an age on Internet use and
- 44:08things like that? I agree, it's crazy.
- 44:10I don't know if I would have survived living in.
- 44:12This. Oh, in the current state, no.
- 44:14Yeah, if I had the cell phone. 12 years old, brains already
- 44:17fried. Yeah, like video games did
- 44:19enough. That's it, 100%.
- 44:20All the distractions. I feel the same way at 46, and I
- 44:23at least had a solid 25 years, really before I even picked up a
- 44:27phone, you know, I would have been toast.
- 44:29Yeah. A lack of.
- 44:31Education and awareness and commitment to knowledge is a
- 44:36slippery slope. Sydney is having.
- 44:48A party? Yeah, they're going gangbusters.
- 44:51Except premature. Little premature Leo's got a
- 44:54message. Doesn't go well.
- 44:56No, no, she gets fired. That's it.
- 44:58And she storms over to the White House to confront the president,
- 45:01to say, look, I got the numbers. Yeah, what happened?
- 45:04I got screwed. You know what happened.
- 45:06He was a dork. He was being a dork, totally.
- 45:10And he needs to apologize. Yes, he doesn't.
- 45:12She's trying to Hartford. Yeah, she's out of a job.
- 45:15Go. Wailers.
- 45:17He asked why, and of course, she explains, I got fired.
- 45:20That's what happens when an entire reason for being is
- 45:23eliminated and one fell swoop. Yeah, he did not deal with this
- 45:25very well. You're paying so little
- 45:27attention to the media, which is your political life, and you're
- 45:30clearly misjudging your personal life.
- 45:34Then you're kind of terrible. You know, it just does it so.
- 45:37Well, yeah, I think the balancing act of everything you
- 45:40just got in too deep, Phil. That's right.
- 45:41That's what love. Does 100%.
- 45:43It does so ultimately ends up screwing her over.
- 45:47Screwing over the. Environments.
- 45:49That's right. Nothing, Not her.
- 45:50Nothing happened her. That's right.
- 45:52You get fired. She didn't lose her job, have to
- 45:54move to Hartford. Yeah, that's a little short
- 45:55sighted of him in that moment. I like read the room.
- 45:59Yeah. Right, you have a little respect
- 46:01here. Yeah, I think he just picked off
- 46:03a little bit more than he could chew here with running the
- 46:06country and trying to being in this new relationship.
- 46:08It's not as easy as it. Looks.
- 46:10It's really hard to be president and get flowers.
- 46:15That's very hard to. Do it's very hard to do, but
- 46:16what one person that has been telling him this basically since
- 46:20the beginning is AJ. His right hand.
- 46:22Man, right hand man. Yeah, Chief of staff, another
- 46:25absolutely top three. Oh yeah, I.
- 46:28Played the trifecta. Here, Yeah, I think so.
- 46:30And this one does get a little more personal.
- 46:33Maybe not in terms of calling him Andy, but shots are fired.
- 46:37I love it. Indicating.
- 46:38How's the view? From the cheap seats.
- 46:40And then AJ comes back. You would not be here if it
- 46:43wasn't for me. There's a lot of dialogue, can't
- 46:45repeat it because it's so damn good.
- 46:47So I trust watched the movie totally.
- 46:49See, I'm sure you have the people listening, but this is a
- 46:52showcase moment of that and the F bomb gets dropped.
- 46:56Yeah, it's the, it's the one. Is it the one on a PG movie?
- 46:58Absolutely. Delivered.
- 46:59It's perfect. Yeah.
- 47:01This whole scene is perfection. Top to bottom, it's really
- 47:04great. And you really get the bubbling
- 47:05over of the mistakes that the conversations that haven't been
- 47:08had in the last six weeks of the movie.
- 47:10Right. Exactly.
- 47:11And like a volcano erupt. Exactly.
- 47:13You get it. You get it.
- 47:15It's really powerful. Love it.
- 47:16And it was a scene that I remember very, very fondly from
- 47:18the first time being moved by it.
- 47:20And you've talked before about watching movies, the ones you've
- 47:22seen a number of times. You're counting down like, give
- 47:25me the scene, the scene, This is it.
- 47:26This is one of them, one of the a couple.
- 47:28But that really resonates. And it still holds up because it
- 47:31finishes off with the softness of if Mary hadn't died, would we
- 47:36have won? Yes.
- 47:37Like this is moments after the FU.
- 47:40And that's a chip on your shoulder, right?
- 47:41Like if he's saying that, that means on some level he's doubted
- 47:45that. Yeah.
- 47:46And I think that that's a character piece that up until
- 47:48now, it's like, oh, we didn't know that part.
- 47:51And I like that it's revealed the last 20 minutes of the
- 47:54movie. And I like.
- 47:54It and that all made sense. What didn't make sense to me is
- 47:57what AJ says about running that campaign had Mary not died.
- 48:03And he says it would have been great if my friend Andy showed
- 48:06up. Yeah, I don't understand.
- 48:07That, but it still affected me the same if I didn't know what
- 48:10he meant versus if I knew what he meant.
- 48:11Like it still got me. Yeah, it's like the sand.
- 48:14It's like, I don't know what that means.
- 48:15It's that feels profound sounds. I am eating sand.
- 48:18I'm eating sand. Sometimes in my dreams I eat
- 48:21glass. And it just means I'm really
- 48:23thirsty. I'm trying to get glass out of
- 48:24my mouth. I wake up, I just, I'm really
- 48:26perched. Interesting.
- 48:27Yeah. And of course, that leads us to
- 48:28the big speech. That's right #4 on your.
- 48:32To limit it to three, which is just silly of me because there
- 48:36is like 5678 scenes that are all awesome and interchangeable to
- 48:41how they land in order. It's a great moment.
- 48:44We get him finally asserting himself in the fight with AJ.
- 48:47Talks about does he? Has he lied?
- 48:49Has he said anything wrong? Other than Stanford and Harvard
- 48:51and Harvard, but. Other than that, none of these
- 48:53things are wrong. So how can I fight back against
- 48:56it? Yeah.
- 48:56And I think you're feeling a bit helpless if you're like, well, I
- 48:59can't really defend the position because he's right.
- 49:01A president who never served, yadda, yadda, yadda.
- 49:04But in this moment, he's fed up with it all.
- 49:05Aging shakes him up, I guess. And he has this press conference
- 49:08that he barges in on. He's not.
- 49:10Supposed to be, but he'll get away with.
- 49:11It of course and he gets to have his speech now, which is which I
- 49:15think is even more true now than before.
- 49:18And it certainly explains at least 1/2 of the government
- 49:21presently at plays which is there don't care about anything.
- 49:25They just wanna make you scared of it and who to blame for it.
- 49:28I mean that is the entire Republican platform for decades
- 49:32and they don't have solutions to anything, right?
- 49:35You want a healthcare? This is the worst healthcare
- 49:37ever. You're going to die from it.
- 49:38It's a death pit and nothing better for you.
- 49:40And it's been now almost 20 years and they have no answer to
- 49:45this big problem. Not a priority.
- 49:47That means you're an idiot. Yeah.
- 49:49Anyway, so that speech I think, again, resonated in 95,
- 49:52certainly. But I think it is sadly like,
- 49:55emotionally devastating hearing it now.
- 49:58And he accepts that it's all about character.
- 50:00That's it. That's a 180.
- 50:02But what are you thinking earlier?
- 50:03But. Luckily, he doesn't think Bob
- 50:05could sell it. That's right.
- 50:07That's right. Which I wish was.
- 50:09Not that he didn't get it, it's that he couldn't sell.
- 50:11It and I wish people wouldn't buy it.
- 50:13Yeah, people are buying though. Definitely a buy economy.
- 50:16I found this speech to be a little bit better.
- 50:19And Hugh Grants, because we've done another speech relatively
- 50:23recently. Yeah, sure.
- 50:24Obviously, it's not intended to be so impactful.
- 50:26Yeah. But this is an incredibly well
- 50:29written speech. As they should be.
- 50:31Yeah. Sorkin.
- 50:32It's certainly a Sorkin. And I'm going to tell you
- 50:34something here. Phil, please.
- 50:36I teared up at this moment. Wow.
- 50:38It was that part of the speech. OK.
- 50:40The camera turns to AJ and Lewis, and AJ just gives Lewis
- 50:45this tap on the shoulder. That's your bill.
- 50:48That's right, yeah. He's been pushing for that.
- 50:50But the handguns, this is a win for you.
- 50:53It got me because I love their relationship.
- 50:56The whole movie AJ and Lewis floored.
- 50:58Me, I'm impressed that it managed to get a tier.
- 51:01Even the second time I watched. It Oh, wow, that's right.
- 51:03I think it's definitely a beautiful moment.
- 51:05That's a subtle kind of bit of like you did it, buddy.
- 51:08Like I like that too. That relationship is very clear.
- 51:11That coupled with this rousing speech of I'm Andy Sheppard and
- 51:14I am the president as opposed to I'm running for president,
- 51:17right, which is a nice little callback.
- 51:20Cap it off. We gotta write a whole new State
- 51:21of the Union. 35 minutes. Yeah, I thought I had to be
- 51:24right. Yeah.
- 51:25It's sort of a cute way to put a little button on it and sort of
- 51:29the last 20 minutes. Pretty powerful stuff.
- 51:31There's almost nothing better. But there's one thing left that
- 51:34needs to be addressed. Wrapped up.
- 51:36Sure, put a bow on it, says Relationship.
- 51:40Did he just put that bill in the drawer for love?
- 51:42Let's find out. Let's find out.
- 51:45He's got to make up to her, and it may require a lot of
- 51:49groveling. I love a grovel because, you
- 51:52know, I've groveled a lot. He's trying to get a Chevy and
- 51:55he's planning this whole thing going to her house.
- 51:58Fortunately for us as an audience, she just shows up.
- 52:01Save us a lot of hassle and they will ultimately, I think they.
- 52:06Going to make. It they mend and they both say I
- 52:09didn't do it for this reason, I didn't do this for you and it's
- 52:13a nice moment. I don't buy it.
- 52:15You really? I think they did it for love.
- 52:17Maybe they did. Cares.
- 52:19It's nice that they make up. I really do appreciate that I
- 52:21just by the time that speech is over, I almost don't care as
- 52:26much about the relationship piece.
- 52:28It makes sense of course, but like I'm so rallied up by.
- 52:32The politics side, that the personal side was a little less
- 52:35than interesting. Well, you must have liked the
- 52:37fact that they have their moment and it's cut short with Lewis
- 52:40walking in, Robin walks in, Jeannie, maybe.
- 52:44And then we're just, we're just like back to business.
- 52:46They only have like 10 seconds of their moment.
- 52:49That's it. And I just think that's a
- 52:50perfect. It's great.
- 52:51There's two endings to this movie.
- 52:53We got and the personal and you and the.
- 52:55Exactly. If I can take the personal,
- 52:57please, you can take the professional.
- 52:59He finally presents roses to Sydney.
- 53:01Yes, he does. And she says how did you finally
- 53:04figure out how to be a president and get flowers?
- 53:07And he says, turns out I have a Rose Garden and like that is
- 53:13just a perfect. Line to cap that relationship
- 53:17because it does have a Rose Garden.
- 53:19Or did. Luckily they can do more
- 53:21ballroom dancing. Oh yeah, now that the Rose
- 53:24garden is gone. That's good.
- 53:26It just makes me sad. But anyways, I love that line.
- 53:30It's a good. Line it's a nice way to cap off
- 53:32that relationship for sure now you bring home with the business
- 53:35side of things. Well just the last bit of the
- 53:37movie is him walking into the Congress for the State of the
- 53:40Union where the guy just yells out welcome the president of
- 53:47the. I just thought how he delivered
- 53:49that was a little. Strange.
- 53:50I think it's odd, but it's. Great, I'm guessing that's what
- 53:53they're supposed to do. They do an introduction to the
- 53:54president and welcome him to the State of the first.
- 53:57Somebody invites him. You have to be invited to the
- 53:58State of the Union and then you show.
- 53:59Up. I love the energy.
- 54:00Yeah, it's great. Yeah, this delivery, I was like.
- 54:03Great performance. This is a great movie, David,
- 54:06for all the emotional reasons in the mix of it, the politics of
- 54:09it. Obviously Rob Reiner, my
- 54:11affinity for the West. It was really nice.
- 54:13It felt very comfortable to come back into this world after so
- 54:17many years. It just felt like the right
- 54:19choice for bittersweet time. It wasn't at first.
- 54:22It certainly turned that way after the events of Rob Reiner's
- 54:26death. But up until then, I was just
- 54:28excited to watch a movie that I love and then watch it deepens
- 54:32afterwards. And then again as a balm, if you
- 54:34will, to the shitty president that's going on.
- 54:38That contrast, I feel formally to it.
- 54:40What are your thoughts now? Coming in?
- 54:42It brought a tear, so it must have or three at least.
- 54:44It must have done something. For I love this movie.
- 54:47I'm serious at the beginning where I said this might be the
- 54:49best movie that I've watched off your shelf.
- 54:51Shocked, but pleased. Yeah.
- 54:53And it reaffirms my love for Michael Douglas.
- 54:57Like watching Wonder Boys. That's not really the Douglas
- 54:59I'm looking for. I had no issue with it.
- 55:01Sure. But frumpy Douglas is not your.
- 55:02Guy exactly. And it's been so long since I'd
- 55:05watch Romancing the Stone example as a kid, and I haven't
- 55:10watched a lot of Michael Douglas movies.
- 55:11So I'm excited that there's a lot more on your shelf, I
- 55:14imagine. And I will get some on my shelf
- 55:16if I need to. And with the rest of the
- 55:18supporting cast and the writing of Aaron Sorkin, like, I will
- 55:22seek out more Sorkin's because I don't think you get that quality
- 55:25of writing anymore. Scarce.
- 55:27Yeah, it's very unique, he wrote.
- 55:29Moneyball. That makes more sense to me.
- 55:31If you connect that to my God, I love that movie.
- 55:34One of my top three movies of all time, actually.
- 55:37It's just a beautifully written story.
- 55:39I absolutely love it. Would I have it on my shelf?
- 55:42The one reason why I would say no is I've watched it.
- 55:45Nice. I'm glad I did.
- 55:47What? I wanna watch it again.
- 55:48It's hard to say when you've just watched yours, but it does
- 55:51make me sad to know that is so far from the current reality of
- 55:57the political world in the West anywhere.
- 56:00Totally. For those two hours I feel
- 56:02great, but I don't know if I want to feel that bad
- 56:06afterwards. It's totally reasonable, like
- 56:08the hangover if you will. So that would be the only reason
- 56:11why I may not be on my shelf. That's a really good point,
- 56:13David, and I kind of agree. I certainly felt more
- 56:17susceptible to the damage, as it were, of the world outside of
- 56:22the bubble of this movie. When you're watching it, you're
- 56:24going, this guy's a genius, really making it work and
- 56:27knowing that he will not make more movies.
- 56:30Yeah, that's the the film side of it, and then the political
- 56:33side. I'm watching The West Wing again
- 56:35in part because of that respite. I need that gap.
- 56:39But then you read the news and you're just like, well, what the
- 56:41fuck? It's all.
- 56:41Hopeless. You want to live inside the
- 56:43West? Wing Yeah, it's a real tough
- 56:44situation, but I'm happy to revisit the movie.
- 56:46Glad you enjoyed it so much. That warms my heart because it's
- 56:49been five years since you said anything complimentary of any of
- 56:52my. Movies.
