- 0:33Speaker 1: we bother him every day. We appreciate it.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Man, how are you, oh Man?
- 0:36Speaker 3: Doing great? Doing great? Glad you have gotten the promotion.
- 0:38Speaker 3: I appreciate it. Really excited for this opportunity.
- 0:40Speaker 1: This is just way easier to have you come on
- 0:43Speaker 1: and do like the quick wraparound in context than to
- 0:46Speaker 1: me stumble and fumble all the way through it.
- 0:47Speaker 2: So let's let's go through each of these.
- 0:49Speaker 1: You tell us how it happened, some reaction context around it.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Let's start with what I guess is the biggest news today.
- 0:56Speaker 1: The Saints added safety. Justin reed, this is something you
- 1:00Speaker 1: actually wrote about Louisiana sports and ed as one of
- 1:02Speaker 1: your wish lists.
- 1:03Speaker 2: So why does this make sense?
- 1:06Speaker 3: Yeah? I mean, this is a great signing for New Orleans,
- 1:08Speaker 3: and this is one that allows them to be able
- 1:10Speaker 3: to kind of absorb one of the other moves that
- 1:13Speaker 3: I'm sure we would get to. But I can go
- 1:14Speaker 3: ahead and fold it in now, which is the loss
- 1:16Speaker 3: of Will Harris. Right, Will Harris signing over with the
- 1:19Speaker 3: Washington Commanders excellent addition for them, but for the Saints,
- 1:22Speaker 3: that ends up kind of costing them one of those downhill,
- 1:26Speaker 3: hard hitting, great communicator type safeties, and so it kind
- 1:30Speaker 3: of shot the need for safety up the boards. But
- 1:34Speaker 3: now you get this deal done and it kind of
- 1:36Speaker 3: helps you out quite a bit. I think it'll be
- 1:38Speaker 3: twenty nine years old when the season begins. It's only
- 1:41Speaker 3: twenty eight right now. But he's been somebody that has
- 1:43Speaker 3: effectively taken the exact same career trajectory as Tyron Matthew.
- 1:47Speaker 3: He started in Houston, went to Kansas City, played in
- 1:50Speaker 3: three Super Bowls there, now comes to New Orleans. Team
- 1:53Speaker 3: up with Tyron Matthew. I think those two can be
- 1:55Speaker 3: a really effective safety duo for Brandon Staley's defensive scheme,
- 1:59Speaker 3: which is going to want that versatility from that safety position.
- 2:03Speaker 3: And so I think those two are going to be
- 2:05Speaker 3: able to complement each other quite a bit here over
- 2:08Speaker 3: the course of twenty twenty five. And this is a
- 2:09Speaker 3: great signing for du world.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Is read an upgrade from Harris.
- 2:13Speaker 3: I would say so, But look, I think that they're
- 2:16Speaker 3: slightly different in terms of their play as well. I
- 2:19Speaker 3: think that they both kind of checked the downhill safety box.
- 2:22Speaker 3: But I think that what it is that Reed does
- 2:24Speaker 3: a little bit better than what Harris had is that
- 2:26Speaker 3: you can have him kind of be that split safety
- 2:29Speaker 3: to split the field deep and all these other things.
- 2:32Speaker 3: So in a defense that's going to use a lot
- 2:34Speaker 3: of what's called cover six, so you're going to have
- 2:37Speaker 3: one safety covering one half of the field deep and
- 2:41Speaker 3: then maybe a safety in a corner kind of splitting
- 2:43Speaker 3: coverage for the other half of the field to kind
- 2:45Speaker 3: of covering quarters on the other side. You need some
- 2:48Speaker 3: of those rangy guys that are going to be able
- 2:49Speaker 3: to be complimentary and not only be able to play
- 2:51Speaker 3: downhill in the box, but also be able to guard deep.
- 2:53Speaker 3: And I think that he's a little bit better and
- 2:55Speaker 3: a little bit more polished in that area of the
- 2:57Speaker 3: game than maybe Will Harris.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Well, so they add, justin read, they've re signed two
- 3:02Speaker 1: notable contracts, Chase Young and Juwan Johnson. Let's start with
- 3:08Speaker 1: walking me through the financials here and if these are
- 3:12Speaker 1: good deals to bring both of those players back.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Yeah, Look, I think the thing with both of these
- 3:20Speaker 3: deals is that we don't know if they're good yet. Well,
- 3:23Speaker 3: you've got to find out based on the production that
- 3:26Speaker 3: you get now that the deals are done. But I
- 3:28Speaker 3: will say that being able to get Chase Young back
- 3:31Speaker 3: in New Orleans on a three year, seventeen million per
- 3:34Speaker 3: year average deal is a pretty good situation that puts
- 3:38Speaker 3: the writ in between guys like Alex Highsmith and Bryce
- 3:42Speaker 3: Huff in the NFL. And if you would have told
- 3:45Speaker 3: me when he was a second round draft pick years ago,
- 3:47Speaker 3: excuse me, number two overall draft pick years ago, that
- 3:51Speaker 3: Chase Young would be getting paid the same as guys
- 3:53Speaker 3: named Alex Highsmith and Bright Huff, I think I wouldn't
- 3:57Speaker 3: have believed you, you know what I mean. And so
- 3:59Speaker 3: I think what you see with a guy like Chase
- 4:02Speaker 3: Young is that clearly, this team has looked at him,
- 4:05Speaker 3: this new coaching staf has looked at him and decided
- 4:07Speaker 3: that they can do something with what he has to offer.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Seventy three total pressures according to next Sin stats last year,
- 4:13Speaker 3: number six in the NFL on that metric, but only
- 4:15Speaker 3: five and a half sacks. So the success of this
- 4:18Speaker 3: deal hinges on his ability to tick that number up
- 4:21Speaker 3: and be a little bit more of a sack producer.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Get it. I know that for defensive ends, sacks are
- 4:26Speaker 3: not all the story, but it's most of the story.
- 4:29Speaker 3: So I think that you have to find a way
- 4:31Speaker 3: to be able to tick that production up. So maybe
- 4:32Speaker 3: him being a stand up pass rusher and Daily's system
- 4:35Speaker 3: might end up kind of elevating him and allowing him
- 4:37Speaker 3: to be able to use his speed in a way
- 4:39Speaker 3: that Dennis Allen's depense didn't necessarily elevate him last year.
- 4:44Speaker 3: So I think the production is going to be a
- 4:46Speaker 3: big part of that. But I will say if his
- 4:48Speaker 3: cap hit in twenty twenty five is less than nine
- 4:50Speaker 3: million dollars, the Saints actually saved money in twenty twenty
- 4:54Speaker 3: five on this deal by keeping him, believe it or not,
- 4:56Speaker 3: because if he would have walked out the door nine
- 4:58Speaker 3: million dollars of dead cap would have walked that with him.
- 5:01Speaker 3: I would say the same thing, Yeah, go ahead, No,
- 5:02Speaker 3: I was gonna.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Say, it almost feels a little bit like a restructure
- 5:05Speaker 1: and an extension anyway, go ahead.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's like a it's a I think I
- 5:10Speaker 3: was talking with somebody in the media room yesterday and
- 5:12Speaker 3: we called it like a hidden money situation that actually
- 5:16Speaker 3: by keeping the player you end up making a little
- 5:18Speaker 3: bit money back here this year, and the same thing
- 5:20Speaker 3: happens with Juwan Johnson. Deal now is ten million dollars
- 5:24Speaker 3: effectively worth it for Juwan Johnson? That part we don't
- 5:28Speaker 3: know yet. That again is going to be all about
- 5:30Speaker 3: the production and the new offense moving forward. But clearly
- 5:33Speaker 3: Kellen Moore believes he can do something with Juan who
- 5:36Speaker 3: had a career high in catches last year and had
- 5:38Speaker 3: a career high and receiving yards last year. But we're
- 5:40Speaker 3: talking like forty catches in five hundred and forty eight
- 5:43Speaker 3: receiving yards. They're not talking about anything earth chattering there.
- 5:45Speaker 3: So they've got to make that contract worth it. But
- 5:48Speaker 3: here in twenty twenty five, if he comes in and
- 5:50Speaker 3: his cap hit is less than six and a half
- 5:51Speaker 3: million dollars. The things actually saved money, so moves like
- 5:54Speaker 3: this actually helped them make moves like the Justin Reed edition.
- 5:57Speaker 3: So it all kind of feeds into one another.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Boss Jackson's with US Louisiana Sports DoD Net locked on
- 6:04Speaker 1: Saints podcast. To make all this happen, they had to
- 6:07Speaker 1: restructure Tyron and de Mario Davis and Pete Werner and
- 6:10Speaker 1: Caesar Louiz and Carl Granderson and I might have left
- 6:12Speaker 1: somebody else off out there. Tell me what is significant
- 6:17Speaker 1: about those restructures, short or long term?
- 6:20Speaker 2: What should we know?
- 6:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I think the most significant one is actually the
- 6:24Speaker 3: Tyron Matthew deal. It's not the one that saves the
- 6:26Speaker 3: most money, but the Tyron Matthew rework is really what
- 6:31Speaker 3: it was was actually a renegotiation of his contract, so
- 6:34Speaker 3: they dropped his base salary down, actually saved some money
- 6:38Speaker 3: that way, and then just added a whole bunch of
- 6:39Speaker 3: playing time incentives to it. This is a really team
- 6:42Speaker 3: friendly thing for Tyron Matthew to do for the second
- 6:45Speaker 3: year in a row. By the way, last year he
- 6:47Speaker 3: took a pay cut in order to get guarantees. This year.
- 6:49Speaker 3: This year, he took those guarantees and reduced them and
- 6:51Speaker 3: then flipped them over to intensives. So everything that you
- 6:55Speaker 3: know about Tyron Matthew character wise shows in situations like
- 6:59Speaker 3: this where he's doing things that help the team out tremendously.
- 7:02Speaker 3: So I think that's kind of the biggest statement rework
- 7:06Speaker 3: or renegotiation that you're going to see here, the ones
- 7:09Speaker 3: that saves the most money. Your moves like restructuring Carl
- 7:12Speaker 3: Granison and restructuring Sees Relise. All together, with all the
- 7:16Speaker 3: moves that the Saints made, they opened up at least
- 7:18Speaker 3: about twenty million dollars worth of salary cap space today
- 7:21Speaker 3: just in those moves. That includes restructuring Colin Saunder's, restructuring
- 7:25Speaker 3: Pete Werner, and then they also did some kind of
- 7:27Speaker 3: rework to Toamaaro Davis, but we don't have those details yet,
- 7:30Speaker 3: so we'll see exactly which way all of this goes.
- 7:32Speaker 3: So depending on exactly what those figures are, they might
- 7:35Speaker 3: have opened up more than twenty million dollars, but it
- 7:37Speaker 3: certainly opened up an opportunity for them to be in
- 7:39Speaker 3: the arena free agency and actually get involved here and
- 7:42Speaker 3: kind of what the second.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Wave is I guess the other really notable name so
- 7:47Speaker 1: far as it, Peyton Turner, former first round draft pick,
- 7:49Speaker 1: of course, is signed the one year deal with the
- 7:51Speaker 1: Dallas Cowboys. I'm not sure that any of us think
- 7:54Speaker 1: anything different, but any reaction to seeing Peyton Turner walk
- 7:57Speaker 1: out the door, Yeah.
- 7:59Speaker 3: It was exactly what was expected, right, Like they didn't
- 8:01Speaker 3: pick up the fifty year option last year, which isn't
- 8:03Speaker 3: usually completely indicative of whether or not the team is
- 8:05Speaker 3: he interested in moving on with the player, But with
- 8:07Speaker 3: this one, it's felt like it was pretty indicative whether
- 8:09Speaker 3: or not the team intended to move on with a player.
- 8:11Speaker 3: He drafted him as a project in the first round
- 8:14Speaker 3: and he'll at Buy's selection that never really panned out,
- 8:16Speaker 3: some of that having to do with opportunity, some of
- 8:18Speaker 3: that having to do with injury. Right, he limited his
- 8:20Speaker 3: own opportunities not being able to stay out on the field.
- 8:23Speaker 3: So now the big question mark is who is he
- 8:25Speaker 3: now that he leaves New Orleans? Is he a Zach Bond,
- 8:27Speaker 3: is he a Caid Nellis or is he a Marcus Davenport.
- 8:30Speaker 3: And so that's going to be the big thing. And
- 8:32Speaker 3: what I mean by that is, is he go out there
- 8:33Speaker 3: and all of a sudden become a defensive player that
- 8:35Speaker 3: your candidate like Zach Bond just did. Does he kind
- 8:37Speaker 3: of serve a role like Caid Nellis does in Atlanta,
- 8:40Speaker 3: or does he flame out but yet continue to get
- 8:42Speaker 3: contracts somehow, like Marcus Davenport has over in Detroit. So
- 8:45Speaker 3: it'll be interesting to kind of see what his trajectory
- 8:46Speaker 3: post New Orleans is. But it was clear that, especially
- 8:49Speaker 3: with the scheme chains, he didn't necessarily have a future
- 8:51Speaker 3: here in New Orleans.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Ross with this first big wave seemingly probably coming to
- 8:57Speaker 1: an end and then sort of the second wave of rage,
- 9:00Speaker 1: should we be looking for player position wise?
- 9:02Speaker 2: What's on the horizon?
- 9:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I think a big thing of watch is what
- 9:05Speaker 3: do they do on the offensive line. They've not done
- 9:08Speaker 3: anything in terms of resignings on the offensive line. The
- 9:10Speaker 3: only thing that they've done so far is restructuring contracts
- 9:14Speaker 3: for guys like Cause Louis for instance. So you saw
- 9:16Speaker 3: a big focus on the defensive trenches in the first
- 9:18Speaker 3: day and in the second day even with guys internal,
- 9:21Speaker 3: but also going out trading for Devon gotcha. But then
- 9:24Speaker 3: now the next thing is what do they do on
- 9:26Speaker 3: their offensive trenches. So a big name that I would
- 9:28Speaker 3: watch here, I think you're looking for a starter on
- 9:30Speaker 3: the interior. Making a mistick about it is McKai Becton,
- 9:34Speaker 3: the Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman, who's a tackle that transitioned
- 9:38Speaker 3: into the inside last year. He's still out on the market,
- 9:42Speaker 3: and the Philadelphia Eagles made a trade sending former Thinks
- 9:45Speaker 3: safety Jaunty Garden Johnson to the Houston Texans in exchange
- 9:50Speaker 3: for an offensive lineman. So there's some indication that Kai
- 9:53Speaker 3: Becton may indeed be on the way out and phil
- 9:55Speaker 3: it So if that's the case, if he liked what
- 9:58Speaker 3: he did in Kellen Moore's offense, was he could potentially
- 10:01Speaker 3: come here to New Orleans do it again in twenty
- 10:02Speaker 3: twenty five. That would be another big signing for New Orleans.
- 10:05Speaker 3: But they did say they were going to be more active,
- 10:07Speaker 3: and so a signing like Justin Reid and then a
- 10:09Speaker 3: signing like Makai Bector would certainly indicate that, and then
- 10:12Speaker 3: they can fill out the rest of their roster with
- 10:13Speaker 3: smaller contracts, and of course they're draft I.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Knew you could do that way more efficiently than I could.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Ten minutes, very well spent.
