- 0:47Thank you. Now here are the hosts of the
- 0:50United We Scan podcast. Hey guys, guess what?
- 0:54It's edit book time. Yay finally, and you just have
- 0:58me doing this so bear with me guys.
- 1:02Since when you have your edit book and you have the edit book
- 1:05how to pages that are in there, they are not Craft specific.
- 1:10So some of it may beef just for city only in there or just rural
- 1:16only, or it'll say something that really doesn't verify to or
- 1:20coincide with what rural craft does.
- 1:23So I'll kind of kind of go back and forth a little bit and
- 1:26update it as it goes. The number one on the on that
- 1:30front page or on that page. I know sometimes the edit book
- 1:34how to's are either in the back of the edit book.
- 1:37Mine were in the very front because I got a brand new edit
- 1:40book this year. So AMS just sent me a brand new
- 1:43edit book out of the blue. All I'd asked for was new edit
- 1:46book pages and I got a whole brand new edit book.
- 1:48So. But number one, most
- 1:51importantly, all changes must be made in red ink.
- 1:55And the rural care there is on the national website under the
- 1:59student reference guide. If you go up under edit books,
- 2:01hit E for edit books, there is a USPS document.
- 2:06I'll kind of be flipping back and forth just to touch on stuff
- 2:08that is rural carrier specific. Rural carrier guide to edit book
- 2:13maintenance it's called. And basically edit book
- 2:17maintenance is essential for capturing new deliveries,
- 2:20correcting out of sequence deliveries.
- 2:24This still was back when we still had the 4000 threes.
- 2:27So matching the 4000 threes line of travel.
- 2:30Now it would be your LTM print out when you have, when you do
- 2:35your mapping each month and you get your Lt. your summary when
- 2:38you print out the LTM that essentially that summary is what
- 2:42you want to match would have been similar to that of the 4003
- 2:46in the past. Also the very important with
- 2:49managing active and vacant deliveries, non delivery day
- 2:53customers AKA schools, businesses that are closed on a
- 2:57specific day of the week and generating new case labels,
- 3:04maintaining your edit book monthly is very, very, very
- 3:07important. So as we continue, like I said,
- 3:12don't forget must be done in red ink.
- 3:15All right, you'll have an AMS route summary page.
- 3:18This always comes with new edit sheets.
- 3:21It's usually at the very back. And this is where you verify
- 3:25your casing equipment configuration is correct by
- 3:27making sure it has the right number of pieces, that you're in
- 3:30the right order. Shelving your shelving is
- 3:32correct whether it's your you're doing a four or five or six
- 3:35shelves. My personally, I went from A5 to
- 3:38A6 shelves. So that changed for me and this
- 3:41is essential because this is how your case label, making sure
- 3:44your case labels are printed correctly and reduce the time
- 3:48spent cutting and taping new labels.
- 3:51Whereas if you go back into your page, it says case labels should
- 3:54not be cut or written on. Guess what rolls I can cut and
- 3:58paste if we have to. I know happens every once in a
- 4:02while and then you'll have your allocated case.
- 4:05Cell section displays the cell utilization per shelf.
- 4:10Each full shelf has 40 cells and the and a wing shelf has 20
- 4:14cells. So depending on the equipment
- 4:16and the number of shelves, the totals available will vary.
- 4:20Each shelf should have the first cell designated for the cores or
- 4:25the 3982 labels. You know your good old parsley,
- 4:28your forwards 10 cells are reserved at the end for CFS, the
- 4:33section delivery count section. This section provides a summary
- 4:38of your active deliveries and they're split several ways.
- 4:41They'll show residential versus business deliveries and then the
- 4:44four types for each. The four types are your curb,
- 4:47your CBU central and other. All right, let me jump to this
- 4:52other one. All right, so our May comes in
- 4:55with an adding St. deliveries and to add a street delivery, to
- 5:01add a street, to add a delivery to an existing block, draw an
- 5:04arrow between the two addresses where the new delivery will be
- 5:07inserted and know all information necessary to create
- 5:11the delivery. This includes the primary
- 5:13address as well as a secondary abbreviation, unit number,
- 5:20delivery type, usage code, no step, vacant indicator.
- 5:26We actually don't use that one. That's a City side thing.
- 5:29So you're going to verify. So when you come back in, you're
- 5:31going to verify, definitely verify your delivery type.
- 5:35And this curb is a traditional mailbox that you drive up to.
- 5:39So even if you have hardships where you pull into their
- 5:42driveway and you're still delivering the mail through the
- 5:45window, that's still considered a curbside delivery.
- 5:48Anything that you're still delivering from the truck and
- 5:51not having to amount at all is a curbside.
- 5:54Other is a delivery that is a dismount and the mail is brought
- 5:59inside or to the door, such as school, business or your
- 6:02hardships where you have to take the mail up to the door for the
- 6:05mailbox that's affixed at the door.
- 6:07Anytime you have to dismount on a daily basis to deliver it is
- 6:11other. CB Us are the ones that are the
- 6:14stand alone hosted on a pedestal.
- 6:17We all know what those are for the most part.
- 6:19And then you're centralized are technically like a CBU that are
- 6:23recessed into a wall. I can think of like apartment
- 6:27complexes in the old style where you put the key in and you pull
- 6:30them down and feed them from the top.
- 6:31That would be a centralized unit.
- 6:34I know of some of them that have like mail rooms where the where
- 6:38the boxes are into the wall. So anytime it's not a stand
- 6:43alone unit is and it's built into a wall, it is a centralized
- 6:47box. So it'd be this sent under the
- 6:50delivery type your usage codes code section R for residential,
- 6:56B for business. There are some that have more
- 7:00than one. If you have something that would
- 7:03be a residential slash business or business slash residential,
- 7:08there is a couple different codes for those depending on
- 7:11what they are the most. So if it's a business that
- 7:13happens to also be residential or is it residential that has a
- 7:17business, two different codes for that.
- 7:20I have a lot of businesses that are as well residential and just
- 7:26because I live in one of those areas where I have a lot of mom
- 7:28and pop places that have the little cottages along the lake
- 7:32that they rent out. So that would be a joint
- 7:35residential business, business residential Big one is the no
- 7:41stat section on your edit pages. This is where you want to verify
- 7:46that your deliveries are definitely coded.
- 7:48Because if they're, you know, if they're blank, then they're
- 7:52occupied. It's an active delivery.
- 7:54If it is AC, that means it's vacant over 90 days only.
- 8:00For rural, we use the the C for the no stat to be vacant.
- 8:05We don't deliver there at the moment.
- 8:08Y is the same as C, but it's met first city delivery for the most
- 8:12part. Or if you have an address that's
- 8:15not developed yet, but at the address is in the book, it's not
- 8:19developed. There's no mailbox, there's no
- 8:21house, there's no structure. Then it would be AY again guys,
- 8:25I am not a professional. I'm just another carrier who
- 8:29digs and and likes to read and make sure that I'm doing my
- 8:33stuff. So then you have the next line
- 8:36on your edit book pages is your vacant indicator section.
- 8:39That's not something we do anything with.
- 8:41That's only for city delivery. Seasonal indicator section.
- 8:47We don't do anything with that as well.
- 8:50And then drop section, for most cases, this is going to be
- 8:54blank. Obviously the drop section means
- 8:57so if you have more than one family at an address and they
- 9:03get mail into one box. So it would be for example a
- 9:08drop 2 is a home with one mailbox but has two families the
- 9:11notified mailers to increase. Putting in A2 under a drop would
- 9:15notify the mailers to increase the box holders by one.
- 9:18So the address would get a second ADVO or second box holder
- 9:23or whatnot. I actually have a drop 3 on my
- 9:27routes and I think I have a couple drop too so not very many
- 9:34as a lot of people have gone and started to do it.
- 9:38Individual boxes but there's still a few out there.
- 9:42The next section is your non delivery day section.
- 9:45Each day of the week is a choice.
- 9:47The mail will be pulled from the DPS on the designated day just
- 9:50right in the day of the week to have the mail pulled from the
- 9:52DPS. This is not for holds.
- 9:55This is only for businesses that are closed on the same day of
- 9:57the week for like an S for Saturday for business or school.
- 10:02My whole industrial park is an S, my Township office and my
- 10:07chamber is an S because they're closed on Saturdays and I don't
- 10:10deliver there. And so their mail is then held
- 10:12out and it comes in my raw mail on Saturdays and I just case it
- 10:17up for it to go out on Monday. So, but if you have a business
- 10:21that is closed on Fridays or Mondays or whatever that may be,
- 10:26you would put that letter in to signify which day that would be
- 10:32okay. Next section is going to be the
- 10:35address marker section. This is where you would have an
- 10:39H if it's an approved hardship, which would also be listed on
- 10:44the dismount worksheet and renewed each year, blah blah
- 10:47blah. So if you have an approved
- 10:49hardship under the address marker, you would put an H, even
- 10:52if that is a curb box, put curbside box because you service
- 10:57it, but it is a hardship because they had approved to move it
- 11:00closer to the house rather than out of the road.
- 11:04You can also have a DNA, which is a door not accessible.
- 11:08I actually have three addresses that are a DNA.
- 11:12They do not want packages brought to the house.
- 11:14So they're listed as that and they get left to notice.
- 11:18You can also have an NSL, which is a no secure location.
- 11:23We can access the door but will not leave a package due to
- 11:26security concerns. So if there's nobody there,
- 11:29you're not going to leave it like some businesses would be in
- 11:32NSL? Possibly.
- 11:34I would have to double check mine.
- 11:36I don't think I have any NSLSI do have some Dnas is the address
- 11:42where we cannot knock on a door to deliver situation where we
- 11:45cannot physically get to the residence or building driveways
- 11:49exceeding the half mile rule. Gated residence such that
- 11:53whatever reason we cannot get to the door.
- 11:55Doors not accessible then yes, that's under the address marker
- 12:00DNA side. That will cover your behind to
- 12:04manage, especially if you get a change of management.
- 12:06Why do you keep leaving package notice for these packages?
- 12:09Well, you can pull up their edit book, see they're a DNA under
- 12:12the additional info. This is where you would update
- 12:14customers names that would display on the case labels.
- 12:17I know a lot of places don't do that anymore.
- 12:19Some offices do. That's where it would go also,
- 12:23or I know I have a lot of businesses on my route.
- 12:27CBUSI do at least like to put the business names on some of
- 12:31them, especially if they're long term businesses.
- 12:34Kind of helps with especially with our CAS casing, they could
- 12:38see, oh, that OK, so McDonald's is that one OK McDonald's,
- 12:43Burger King, you know, stuff like that, Subway, whatever it
- 12:48may be, grocery store name, something like that.
- 12:52The space is limited on that section, so you got to
- 12:54prioritize what you put on there.
- 12:57It again, it says updated case levels are great resource for
- 13:00newer RCA's. I think it's a great resource
- 13:02for RCA's it in general, whether they're new or it's just
- 13:06somebody that's new to running that route.
- 13:09It definitely helps them. I don't put names on mine.
- 13:12I know some of the routes in my office still have names on
- 13:17there. They never took them off and
- 13:19those people are gone forever. To me, I mean especially if you
- 13:22have a route that has a high turnover or your office doesn't
- 13:25do names anymore, I wouldn't worry about it anyways.
- 13:27And then the cell size section, that one where would be 1-2, you
- 13:36see those numbers on there. That's for the size of the cell
- 13:39that you would want. Most addresses or a cell one or
- 13:42two for spacing can be more or less based on the specific
- 13:45route, the volume or space of the office.
- 13:48If you're going to do a half a cell, then the next address also
- 13:53has to be 1/2 a cell. I do have some of mine.
- 13:56Like I said I have 6 shelves in my case. 3 cases, 6 shelves.
- 14:02I am told I couldn't get a wing so that's why I had to add the
- 14:05six shelves whenever I did my case because everything was like
- 14:08almost half inch for almost all of them.
- 14:10I can't no no no no I can't handle that at all.
- 14:14But I do still have some addresses that I keep in like if
- 14:18I have one address that has unit 1 unit 2, they don't get a ton
- 14:25of mail. I keep those at half cells for
- 14:28those specific addresses or a couple of businesses like that.
- 14:31They don't get a ton of mail, but they're right there together
- 14:36anyways. So and then so you want to make
- 14:39sure every delivery point has a designated cell size.
- 14:42Also, if you want to take addresses off of your labels
- 14:48under that cell size, you would cross off that cell size and you
- 14:52would put a pound symbol or what do the kids call it now, hashtag
- 14:59type symbol. Yes, tic tac toe, however you
- 15:02want to call it. And that will take you across
- 15:05that off and that would actually take that address off of your
- 15:10labels. I like to keep my case pretty
- 15:12clean. So if I have had an address
- 15:14that's was no step vacant and nobody's moving in there or the
- 15:22people that decided they don't want to get mail anymore there I
- 15:26went to APO box. Or it may just be a secondary
- 15:30home sees a summer home for them.
- 15:33I don't I will take them off the case if they're not getting
- 15:36mail. If they're not getting mail I
- 15:38don't put them on the case because I can always re add them
- 15:41later if need be. That way it keeps me with enough
- 15:44space for my active boxes and whatnot.
- 15:48Designation. So the additional cell size info
- 15:51designation means the address is vacant well over 90 days.
- 15:54You know what the address unlabeled.
- 15:55Yep, that would be your past, your how your little # symbol
- 15:59hashtag, whatever you guys call it now.
- 16:01Tic tac toe, you know the 2 lines up and down to lines
- 16:06across and let me see what else to cover.
- 16:09So, yeah, so basically, if you're going to if you're
- 16:12activating a box, So when you're going in your edit book and
- 16:17under your your no stat and it has AC on there.
- 16:23And so because it's it's it's vacant and people, new people
- 16:28move in or whatever they decide to get mail.
- 16:31So to change that, you're just going to take your red ink pen
- 16:35and you're going to cross wake one strike through that C.
- 16:39If it's a box that is that you are vacating, making it vacant
- 16:44and there's nothing there. You're going to take your red
- 16:47ink pen and you're going to write C in there.
- 16:50So that's how to activate and deactivate the box basically.
- 16:55And of course, when you activate, especially when you
- 16:58activate, you want to go over to your cell size and make sure it
- 17:03doesn't have the little symbol on there to take so that you
- 17:06can. And if it does, then of course
- 17:08you're going to cross that off with your reading pen and put in
- 17:11the desired cell size, whether it's one or if it's somebody
- 17:14that gets a ton of mail and you're going to use a double
- 17:17cell as a 2. That's what you you do do all
- 17:21the changes do in the red ink pen.
- 17:23Plain and simple. Let me see if there's anything
- 17:26else I need to touch on. If you need to add a delivery as
- 17:31in an address that is not part that is not currently in your
- 17:35edit book, then what you're going to do is you're going to
- 17:39to add a delivery to an existing block.
- 17:41You're going to add an arrow between the two addresses with a
- 17:44new delivery will be inserted. And then you're going to note
- 17:47all the necessary information to create the delivery.
- 17:49Obviously the primary address, the if there's a secondary
- 17:55abbreviation like an apartment or unit number.
- 17:57And then obviously the apartment unit number, whether it's a
- 18:01curbside, a central other, the usage code, whether it's a
- 18:07business or residential. And then of course, obviously
- 18:12active or inactive, all right. To make a change of correction,
- 18:15you're going to draw a line through the old information.
- 18:18Do not obliterate it. Just just a clear line in your
- 18:21red ink pen and clearly indicate the correct information next to
- 18:25it. You want to be as accurate and
- 18:26legible using the proper codes from the key section at the end
- 18:29of the booklet. And that is the booklet that is
- 18:32in your edit book. To change the start of a row,
- 18:36you're going to draw a line between the sequence numbers and
- 18:39and print begin row number. But the little number sign
- 18:45hashtag # sign, whatever you guys want to call it.
- 18:48And then the cells must fit in the casing equipment or ROW will
- 18:50not start there. If there's any hanging half
- 18:53cells or all one to two cells must be in sets of two.
- 18:58Are all one? Yeah, they'll be changed by AMS
- 19:01Special. You know they'll be changed
- 19:02automatically if it's not done correctly.
- 19:05To delete a delivery point, draw a line through the entire
- 19:08address to be deleted, write the word delete to the left of the
- 19:11sequence number. If only a portion of the address
- 19:13is incorrect, such as the secondary address or additional
- 19:16information, draw a line through the incorrect portion.
- 19:19Only addresses should be deleted when the structures partially
- 19:23are completely destroyed with no obvious intention to renovate or
- 19:27rebuild. Do not use add delete to move
- 19:29addresses. If you wish to move an address,
- 19:33see moving reverse tab. All these instructions are in
- 19:37your edit book, guys. So really honestly.
- 19:40And if it's not, ask for them because they're right there,
- 19:44right? Just if taking that extra minute
- 19:46on your end of shift duties and you know, read it, just kind of,
- 19:52you know, read it through, especially if you have
- 19:54questions. I mean, everything for the most
- 19:56part is right there. If you need to move a delivery
- 19:59point on the route, depending on how far the delivery points are
- 20:02being moved and how complex the moves are, you're not going to
- 20:06use an add or delete. So do not mark out or rewrite
- 20:10the numbers in a different sequence on the route listing.
- 20:13For simple moves, really what you're going to do is you're
- 20:16going to draw a circle around the address to be moved and then
- 20:20draw a line to where the address should be moved to, and then
- 20:23print the word move near that line.
- 20:26If it's something that's going to be on more than one page,
- 20:29then definitely there is a worksheet that you can ask.
- 20:35I make a note on a sticky note for my supervisors, the one that
- 20:38does all the changes for us in our office, so I kind of let her
- 20:41know. Right now I do have an.
- 20:43It's not an active address, but it is way out of sequence and I
- 20:48haven't bothered moving it yet. One of these days I'll think
- 20:50about it when I'm doing my edit book and actually move it to
- 20:54where it should go correctly. To reverse deliveries, draw an
- 20:58arc or a bracket around the the addresses to be very reversed
- 21:02and right reverse to the side. To move the delivery points to a
- 21:06different location on the route listing, you're going to draw an
- 21:08arc or a bracket around the addresses to be moved and
- 21:11indicate the line number to that those deliveries should follow.
- 21:14So if it's going to have to move to a totally different.
- 21:17So if you're like on page 4 and it's something that needs to go
- 21:21on page three, you're going to draw a bracket around it and
- 21:25then you're going to write the where it should go to the left
- 21:29of that. And towards the end of that
- 21:31little, your edit book is your edit book key.
- 21:35So that just kind of tells you what everything is.
- 21:37Your sequence number is the AMS computer assigned sequence
- 21:40number of the route may be used to adjust the route.
- 21:43That sequence number is also what you see on your load truck
- 21:46feature as well that coincides with the edit book sequence
- 21:51numbers. So if you did not know that, now
- 21:54you know. So RCA's that use a load truck
- 21:57feature, when you have a sequence number on an address
- 22:01for that package, that's the sequence number in the edit book
- 22:05for that address, primary address.
- 22:08The street number or roll route box number which we really don't
- 22:11use anymore could be blank if the previous delivery point uses
- 22:15the same number or they share the same letter cell.
- 22:18Complete street name. The street name including any
- 22:22pre directional suffices or post directionals.
- 22:26We don't use rural route box numbers anymore unless there
- 22:30might be some out there that still do, but I think that went
- 22:33away when we did the 911 address system.
- 22:36That was before my time, so don't quote me on any of that
- 22:39please. And then your abbreviate your
- 22:43SECY abbreviations is used to identify the type of secondary
- 22:47address, such as an apartment, a building, a department, a floor,
- 22:52lobby, penthouse, room, space, suite, trailer.
- 22:58There could be anything like that that would set it apart
- 23:01from the primary address, your delivery point attributes,
- 23:06obviously delivery type, your other, your centralized, your
- 23:10CBU curb line, internal drop address.
- 23:15I actually do have some of those, one of those one, a
- 23:18couple of those, it's my used to be like vacation cottages or
- 23:25housing and now it's just low income transient housing type
- 23:29thing. All the mail goes into one box.
- 23:33So it's an internal drop address and then your no stat which is
- 23:38first for the rural side is C&Y is for non delivered addresses.
- 23:45Other non delivered addresses are city.
- 23:47City uses the Y for vacant addresses.
- 23:49We use the C for vacant addresses on this rural side.
- 23:53And then your additional would be your hardship or like I said
- 23:58or AT for APO box throwback the do not deliver.
- 24:04Like I mentioned a little bit ago, the LF cell is the letter
- 24:08in flat size, cell size, the number of inches of the carrier
- 24:11case label to consider the following to predict the outcome
- 24:16of the labels. No unpaired half cells, each
- 24:19half must be paired with another to make a full cell.
- 24:24No mixing streets. No2 streets can share 1 cell,
- 24:28one 1/2 to 10. The highest number cells allowed
- 24:31is 10, which is indicated by an FI.
- 24:34Don't know of anything. We don't quote UN quote jackpot
- 24:38on the rural side. So I can't think of anybody that
- 24:41would need a 10 cell address obviously, especially with the
- 24:46fact how the mail has dropped over the years.
- 24:50I know I'm I've taken some of my my 2 cell addresses and put them
- 24:55down to 1 already just because the mail volume has dropped.
- 24:59We don't have to worry about the seasonal delivery or educational
- 25:03facility under the SI. Obviously the drop count
- 25:07indicates the number of businesses or families served by
- 25:09a drop delivery or other multi service delivery point.
- 25:13The nandao the day of the week non delivery, which again, I
- 25:18described that as businesses or something that don't have don't.
- 25:21If they don't get delivery on Saturdays, you'd put an S in
- 25:24there or if it's a Mondays or Fridays, whatever day.
- 25:27If it's the same day every week that they're closed and do not
- 25:31want their mail delivered. The relay number is used to
- 25:34break up a route and separate relays also generates the bundle
- 25:38break cards for DPS. That one's new.
- 25:41I don't think that's anything. Again, this stuff is back from
- 25:442006. I really wish they would learn
- 25:46to update some stuff, but hey, I don't make the rules.
- 25:51And then the additional information, the amount of
- 25:53additional information is displayed on a carrier.
- 25:55Case labels determined by the letter size up to 8 characters
- 25:59per half inch and 17 characters per inch maximum of 30
- 26:03characters. If the secondary address numbers
- 26:06are not in this column, they will not print on the case
- 26:08labels. I do have, like I said, I have
- 26:10some of those that I, you know, for example, 123 Smith lane #1
- 26:17and #2 so you would put one in two, one or two under the
- 26:22additional info depending on which one that would be.
- 26:25Then it would print on your case labels. 123 Smith Lane, number
- 26:291123 Smith lane #2 But yeah, my, my thing is, is definitely, you
- 26:34know, like there are like 3 different things on the national
- 26:38website under the Steward Reference Guide, under E under
- 26:41Edit Books, there's three different things that, you know,
- 26:44help you with edit book wise when it comes to doing this
- 26:48stuff guys, I, you know, research it.
- 26:51It's really edit books are not that difficult to do.
- 26:55It's just paying attention for the most part and making sure
- 27:00you use that red ink pen to make any changes.
- 27:04I do my, I have a very high maintenance route.
- 27:08I, I don't think there's a month goes by that I don't have some
- 27:13sort of change going on. So I usually myself, I ask for
- 27:19new edit pages probably about once every couple months or so.
- 27:25I have a lot of seasonals on my route or what would used to be
- 27:29considered seasonals. I have a lot of snowbirds, so I
- 27:33and they all leave at different times.
- 27:35They all come back at different times.
- 27:37That fluctuates. So I still like to keep a clean
- 27:39edit book. So I'm not trying to make
- 27:41changes on top of changes on top of changes.
- 27:43There you can ask for new edit pages every month if you want
- 27:46labels. I, you know, you hear so much
- 27:49different things. I myself like to do my labels at
- 27:53least quarterly if I've had a lot of changes like new
- 27:59addresses become active that weren't active before.
- 28:03And so they're not on my labels. I mean, I've got yeah, I am
- 28:08constantly making changes. So I probably do my labels at
- 28:12least 4 * a year. I would suggest minimum twice a
- 28:17year if you know you have a brand new RCA coming in or
- 28:22that's going to be running your route and you haven't updated
- 28:25your labels in forever. And I get it now as a regular.
- 28:28I mean, I was in RCA for, you know, almost nine years, ran
- 28:31mini routes and saw some pretty horrid cases that weren't kept
- 28:36up. As a regular, I get it because
- 28:38we know our routes. We do.
- 28:41And but if you know you're in a short staffed office, so you
- 28:44don't know what PTF or RCA or anybody's that's going to be
- 28:49running your route, it's going to help them to have clean case
- 28:55labels for the most part, you know, keep it, you know it
- 28:59active addresses. I have very few inactive
- 29:04addresses on my case, but all that comes with proper edit book
- 29:09update. Proper edit book update again
- 29:12goes back to our evaluations. Are we making sure that all of
- 29:17our active deliveries are active in our active book?
- 29:21Are we vacating our boxes after, you know, 90 days once they're
- 29:29either gone for the season or somebody's moved, whatever.
- 29:33I mean, I had quite a few mailboxes that were taken out
- 29:36this past winter and I knew some of them were seasonal and some
- 29:40of them not and they would just didn't get a ton of mail.
- 29:43So I was really waiting, I was giving them that, that 90 days,
- 29:47maybe even a little bit more for some of them before because I
- 29:51was like, oh, I'm going to have to deactivate this one and this
- 29:54one. And then I come back through and
- 29:56guess what? Their mailboxes are back up
- 29:57because they, Oh yeah, we got to put that back up before we want
- 30:02our packages, why we're here or whatnot.
- 30:04Guys, I'm not a professional. I'm not an AMS technician nor do
- 30:08I ever want to be. But you know, a lot of people
- 30:12have been asking and stuff for edit books.
- 30:15So like I said, most of the most of the stuff that you see out
- 30:18there for edit books in general pertain to both city and rural.
- 30:23And they are different when it comes to how we handle.
- 30:27And yes, we can write and we can cut and tape our labels if need
- 30:33be. On the rural side.
- 30:35I prefer not to if I don't have to.
- 30:37But once in a while I'll be like, oops, I should have took
- 30:39that one off, or oops, I forgot to put that one on there and I
- 30:43insert 1, whether it's an address I had to write on a
- 30:46blank one and tape it together to make sure it was on the case
- 30:49before I got the labels the next time, or oops, I forgot to take
- 30:53that one off, so I just cut it off and slide it down and tape
- 30:58it together. You know, we try not to do that,
- 31:02but it does happen once in a while.
- 31:04We just don't want to make it look really bad.
- 31:06I've seen some really, really bad cases.
- 31:10And then a lot of that, like I said, your case labels come
- 31:12directly from what you have in your edit book.
- 31:15So keeping your edit book clean up to date when I that's what I
- 31:20mean by clean, keeping it up to date, taking off the addresses
- 31:24that don't need be making sure addresses are in the right
- 31:27sequence. You know, if you've got
- 31:29somebody. So if you like, let's say you
- 31:31have a road that you go down one way, all the boxes are on the
- 31:34one side, but you come back up the road and it's still in your
- 31:37line of travel. And a customer wants for, you
- 31:41know, they don't necessarily need a hardship, but they don't
- 31:44want to cross that road because, you know, maybe they're getting
- 31:47older, they've got little kids and they don't want to cross the
- 31:50road. As long as it's still in your
- 31:51line of travel, it shouldn't be an issue for them to move their
- 31:55box to the other side. So yeah, you want to make sure
- 31:58that you do and they get approved to move it and make
- 32:02sure you double check with management to make sure it's
- 32:04approvable to move it because as long as it's still in your line
- 32:06of travel, it should be good. But you want to update that in
- 32:09your edit book so you can update that on your case label.
- 32:12So you're not playing trying to it all coincides guys.
- 32:16So yeah, making sure that they're correctly under the
- 32:20usage code. Residential or business C is
- 32:23vacant over 90 days only for rural and making sure again, not
- 32:30going to stress it enough. Red ink pen for any changes and
- 32:34your cell size, you know, making sure your cell sizes are
- 32:39appropriate. If you got boxes that have been
- 32:42vacant for quite a while and it doesn't look like anybody's
- 32:45going to be moving in any time zone, just take them off the
- 32:47labels, put in that little number sign # sign, hashtag,
- 32:51whatever people want to call it. That's what it does takes it off
- 32:54the takes it off your labels because you can always put it
- 32:57back on next time if you have to.
- 32:59So I hope that really helps guys.
- 33:01I'm going to try and get this stuff.
- 33:03So it's kind of like on a video format so you can see what I'm
- 33:07looking at and reading just in general.
- 33:10Obviously I'm not putting my own edit book stuff up there.
- 33:13It's just the general information that anybody can
- 33:17look up or request or whatnot. So I hope this helps.
- 33:22I really do. And I do apologize for the
- 33:24delay. But yeah, edit books are very
- 33:26important. Go through them every month.
- 33:29I personally, if I know I got somebody that needs to, you
- 33:33know, they're coming up on that 90 days or I know somebody that
- 33:38you know, oh, new in a mailbox, new delivery has started, they
- 33:41got their mail, they're getting their packages.
- 33:43I'll go in and make those changes in my edit book as they
- 33:46happen. That way.
- 33:48I'm not trying to like today I had already turned my edit book
- 33:52in and I got back from the route and my supervisor should be
- 33:57like, hey, I got a couple questions on this because I had
- 34:01a couple of them that were just listed at businesses and I
- 34:03wanted them as business residences.
- 34:06And she just had a couple questions on a couple of the
- 34:08things in there. And I'm like, Oh yeah, I got to
- 34:11go and vacate, you know, this one box.
- 34:14And because I didn't think about it until I got back and I was
- 34:17like, did I do that in my edit book or not?
- 34:19Because it's been 90 days or more I need to do that.
- 34:23So luckily she had questions, so I remembered to do it.
- 34:26So yeah, even though you're turning in your edit books
- 34:28between the 1st and the 10th of each month, if you could try,
- 34:32you know, if you do those changes as they occur, your edit
- 34:36book will pretty much be ready to go when it comes time to turn
- 34:39it in by the 10th. I just always do a quick glance
- 34:43through, double check everything before I hand it in for the
- 34:46month and then when I get it back, all right.
- 34:49And like I said, I usually ask for new edit sheets.
- 34:53I don't know, every two to three months or so, just depends on
- 34:56how many changes I've had. I haven't had a lot of changes.
- 35:00One here, one there, couple here, couple there.
- 35:03No, I don't need new edit pages right away, but the following
- 35:06month I've got 3-4, five. Oh yeah, let's go ahead and do
- 35:10it because now I've got a whole bunch in there.
- 35:13Labels. I like I said, if I don't have a
- 35:16lot of, if I don't have any changes that require taking
- 35:20addresses off for putting addresses on my labels, I'll let
- 35:24them go for a few months. But I do at least try.
- 35:27I said I have a high maintenance route, so I do try and do my
- 35:31labels at least every three to four months.
- 35:35End of shift duties guys gets built in.
- 35:37That's how we're paid for them. Do not do the PM casing that
- 35:41stops the end of shift duties clock obviously.
- 35:44So when you're doing your labels preferably on end of shift
- 35:47duties like it's explained to be done.
- 35:49So you know, management gives you hassle about it.
- 35:53Well, contact, you know who you have to contact.
- 35:56So not me, but that's the basics of edit books and I hope it
- 36:05helps you guys. But on that note, this is over
- 36:09and out for me. Take care guys.
