Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Dom Kalasih: Transporting NZ Chief Executive on potential trucking rule changes to save fuel
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Shavement's looking to loosen the rules on big trucks. This
- 0:02Speaker 1: is in the price of in the face of diesel
- 0:04Speaker 1: price increases. It's as if we move to phase two
- 0:07Speaker 1: of the fuel response, which we haven't done yet, it
- 0:10Speaker 1: would allow heavy trucks to carry more weight, opening more
- 0:13Speaker 1: roads to large trucks and permitting off peak travel. Dom
- 0:17Speaker 1: Calassie is transporting in their chief executive with us this morning, Dom,
- 0:20Speaker 1: good morning, good morning. Right, So what can't you do
- 0:24Speaker 1: it the mote.
- 0:27Speaker 2: In fact, what we're after is not larger trucks, we're
- 0:30Speaker 2: after heavier trucks. Right. So government has been asked a targeted, temporary,
- 0:36Speaker 2: time timely solution, right, and we've given them a case
- 0:40Speaker 2: where in this only applies to several thousands, right, it's
- 0:45Speaker 2: a few percent of one hundred and seventy thousand heavy
- 0:48Speaker 2: vehicles out there. But we have said, look, if these
- 0:51Speaker 2: trucks they've got capacity, they could do this now, if
- 0:54Speaker 2: they could carry a bit more, we could help the
- 0:57Speaker 2: country save several million liters of diesel and we could
- 1:01Speaker 2: avoid somewhere around ten million kilometers of truck travel. And
- 1:05Speaker 2: in fact, in fact, just late last week and talks
- 1:08Speaker 2: with officials depending on sort of where they go with this,
- 1:12Speaker 2: those would be minimums, right, So it's all about a
- 1:16Speaker 2: productivity initiative. And their only concern with the announcement yesterday
- 1:23Speaker 2: was we're pretty clear now this is a price issue.
- 1:27Speaker 2: It's not a supply issue. Right. There is fuel moving
- 1:30Speaker 2: around the world and it is getting here, but there's
- 1:34Speaker 2: a lot of price volatility, so we urged the urging
- 1:37Speaker 2: government act. Now it's a logical holding off until we
- 1:42Speaker 2: have a significant supply disruptions before we do anything.
