- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, let's get the themes going here. Get Elena
- 0:08Speaker 1: on the phone. It's Elena would from Nightingale College.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Is that correct? I'm having an interface problem. There we go. Okay,
- 0:15Speaker 2: Hi Elena, Hello, Hello? Is this if we talked since Yeah,
- 0:23Speaker 2: we've talked once.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Before in the year New Year?
- 0:26Speaker 2: Yeah, alright, this is more chat about New Year's resolutions.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. We're still talking about habits and just
- 0:35Speaker 3: building systems that can help you make those habits last.
- 0:40Speaker 3: You know, by this time of year, most people have
- 0:43Speaker 3: completely abandoned most of their resolutions. Yeah, which is fine.
- 0:49Speaker 3: And these are just some tips that that can help
- 0:52Speaker 3: you be a little bit more successful.
- 0:55Speaker 2: You don't be so don't be so compassionate. Well you
- 0:58Speaker 2: say it's fine, it's not fine. You need to shake
- 1:00Speaker 2: your finger at us and say.
- 1:04Speaker 3: I'll shake my finger at just you else.
- 1:07Speaker 2: All right, what are the what are the things we
- 1:10Speaker 2: can do to try and keep this going?
- 1:13Speaker 3: Okay? The first one is to learn the habit cycle,
- 1:17Speaker 3: and this is three steps. Stimulus, behavior, reward. So the
- 1:23Speaker 3: stimulus is the trigger that prompts behavior. Maybe like for Gina,
- 1:28Speaker 3: it's seeing the books on the night stand. Right, the
- 1:31Speaker 3: behavior would be reading the book, and then the reward
- 1:35Speaker 3: would be the joy that you find from from reading.
- 1:44Speaker 2: With me. It would be seeing the bottle of bourbon
- 1:46Speaker 2: on the camera. Drinking the bottle of bourbon. That's not
- 1:54Speaker 2: a good habit.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Yeah, we're talking about healthy habits.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Okay, okay, I'll try and think that I have any
- 2:02Speaker 2: What's next.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Goodness Next is to practice habits stacking, and this just
- 2:09Speaker 3: means to add small hat excuse me, small positive habits
- 2:15Speaker 3: into existing routines. So doing things like taking your morning
- 2:20Speaker 3: medication right after you brush your teeth, or just just
- 2:24Speaker 3: finding something that you do every single day and just
- 2:27Speaker 3: adding a little tiny thing in with it.
- 2:30Speaker 2: For and for instance, I mean what would you add
- 2:33Speaker 2: in with meaning meaning you remember to take your medicine
- 2:36Speaker 2: because you always do it right after you brush. Find
- 2:41Speaker 2: the habit you've already established, add a little something to
- 2:45Speaker 2: it your routine.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Yes, maybe you stretch right before you take your shower
- 2:51Speaker 3: or something like that.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Okay, I got, you got. What's next next.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Is to find positive alternative and I really love this one.
- 3:02Speaker 3: So for example, instead of keeping your bottle of bourbon
- 3:06Speaker 3: on the counter, maybe you keep a bottle of water
- 3:09Speaker 3: on the counter. So then you can grab that and
- 3:12Speaker 3: drink that instead of the bourbon.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Well, you know, I know it really does help if
- 3:16Speaker 2: you put the bourbon inside the cabin where you can't see.
- 3:19Speaker 3: It, yes, exactly.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Then you don't think about it as much. Yeah, okay,
- 3:26Speaker 2: makes sense, Thanks, perfect sense. What else have we got? Next?
- 3:30Speaker 3: Is to start small?
- 3:32Speaker 2: Oh I'm really good at.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Just setting realistic goals.
- 3:39Speaker 2: You know this.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I have conversations all the time with people who are like, oh,
- 3:42Speaker 3: I'm going to the gym five days a week for
- 3:44Speaker 3: four hours, and they've never been to the gym before,
- 3:48Speaker 3: and so they go one day and then they can't
- 3:50Speaker 3: walk and they give up. Right, So instead of setting
- 3:54Speaker 3: that huge, big goal, start really close to where you are.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Maybe start by going on a short walk a couple
- 4:02Speaker 3: of times a week, and then build from there.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Okay, sounds sounds reasonable. What's next?
- 4:07Speaker 3: Yeah? Next is to plan for setbacks.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Oh yeah, and this.
- 4:15Speaker 3: As you know, when we're trying to make changes, it's
- 4:19Speaker 3: not a perfect smooth path. You know, we're going to
- 4:22Speaker 3: run into trouble, and so make a plan for what
- 4:25Speaker 3: you're going to do when you're really stressed out or
- 4:28Speaker 3: tired or just don't feel like doing it, what's what's
- 4:32Speaker 3: the plan on those difficult days?
- 4:35Speaker 2: Until you watch TV.
- 4:38Speaker 3: And you know it might be sometimes and then after
- 4:40Speaker 3: that you get up and go again.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Right yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean that takes your mind
- 4:45Speaker 2: off of it a little bit and then you get
- 4:47Speaker 2: back to it.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Yep, exactly.
- 4:49Speaker 2: All right. Celebrate your progress, yes.
- 4:53Speaker 3: And I am a huge fan of this. Each step
- 4:57Speaker 3: that you take towards your goal is worthy celebration. So
- 5:01Speaker 3: even if you've only done it one time, give yourself
- 5:05Speaker 3: a high five, throw a one song, dance party, journal
- 5:09Speaker 3: about your success, whatever it is, to just help remind
- 5:12Speaker 3: you that you're doing good work.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it's I mean, to be serious about it. It is
- 5:17Speaker 2: hard sometimes because you do something like say, okay, I'm
- 5:21Speaker 2: gonna walk a mile or something and you do that
- 5:24Speaker 2: and you feel really I mean, it was hard and
- 5:29Speaker 2: you feel really down and it's gone. Yeah, it's so hard.
- 5:33Speaker 2: But then you have to say to yourself, yeah, I
- 5:35Speaker 2: feel really kind of terrible right now, but I did it.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I did it exactly. Yeah, yeah exactly. And it's
- 5:42Speaker 3: so easy to get caught in that negative loop. So
- 5:45Speaker 3: just remind yourself you're making progress. You did the thing,
- 5:49Speaker 3: and that is worthy of celebrations.
- 5:51Speaker 2: I done it.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Woo.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Okay, all right, Elena would thank you very much. Where
- 5:57Speaker 2: can people find out more?
