- 0:01Welcome to the Curve Weekly, where we read the finance news so that you don't have to.
- 0:05I'm Vic Harris, a finance professional, and I've had a career out of making money for
- 0:08other people.
- 0:09And I'm Sophie Hallwright, an XTV radio producer who was sick and tired of not really knowing
- 0:13what was going on or how to invest.
- 0:15So we turned our chats into this podcast.
- 0:17In today's episode, we talk about the big feud going on in the US and the UK.
- 0:24It's the Beckhams versus the Peltzers, and we talk about the exorbitant sum of money
- 0:29that Nicola is getting paid by her dad.
- 0:32It's outrageous.
- 0:34We talk about the crazy ride over the last month of gold and silver,
- 0:37and there's actually a friend of ours who, without listening to Vic's advice,
- 0:40bought silver at an all-time high.
- 0:41So there's lots of investing lessons there.
- 0:44We also talk about a new contraceptive pill that's being explored,
- 0:47not for women, but for men.
- 0:50And this could be maybe the start of an investing trend.
- 0:54And there's huge news with SpaceX and Elon Musk's company, basically.
- 0:59it's merging with another of his companies and it could make him the first person in the world to
- 1:03ever be a trillionaire so we break that down what is it going to mean but before we dive in let's
- 1:09have a quick catch-up um i'm looking forward to you being on the side of the world so i know i
- 1:17fly in the morning tomorrow morning i know and i'm i'm like sort of ready but i just know i'm
- 1:24going to have forgotten something really important.
- 1:27I also think it's way more of a bigger deal than it is.
- 1:30Like I'm always like, oh, I've got to pick this.
- 1:31What if I forget this?
- 1:32I'm like, there are shops in New Zealand.
- 1:34There is places you can buy stuff if you forget it.
- 1:37You know, like it's.
- 1:38100%.
- 1:39Yeah.
- 1:40It's not so much that, that I'm worried about.
- 1:42I always pack so badly.
- 1:45It's not funny.
- 1:45Like for any holiday.
- 1:47I remember like it was my parents wedding and they were getting married in Fiji and
- 1:53I wore a suit and boots on the plane and my sisters were like, what is happening?
- 1:59Didn't you borrow my hoodie or something?
- 2:01Yeah, I was honestly, it was the most ridiculous.
- 2:03I just never nail the packing.
- 2:05But it's not so much that that I'm worried about.
- 2:08I can just see something happening, like the passport's missing or like, I don't know.
- 2:14I just feel like I need to leave at least half a day for potential disasters to happen
- 2:19pre-international flight, you know?
- 2:21You don't have my luck though.
- 2:23Oh my God, true.
- 2:24You actually had something go wrong.
- 2:26But you know, that's what emergency funds are for and all of that, you know?
- 2:30I just like, I don't, I've sort of, I shared this on the podcast last week
- 2:34on our like little mini raising the curve that I put out about my emergency fund and having to
- 2:39borrow money from my parents.
- 2:40Like I kind of, I just, I've really struggled to use my emergency
- 2:44fund.
- 2:45It makes me feel so unsafe and I know that that's what it's there for.
- 2:49But the idea of using
- 2:50it like I've already used about half and I had to then borrow money to fill it up again because I
- 2:55was like oh my I noticed my like my psychological panic was quite obvious and it was really down to
- 3:03the fact that that was starting to like dwindle it was funny the episode last week where you were
- 3:10like Vic's grandma's passed away was that okay to share that I didn't even ask if you're okay with
- 3:15me to say that I just sort of assumed it would be all right it's fine it yeah no it's fine it was
- 3:19just I had the most random people reach out to me saying I'm so sorry about your grandma
- 3:24that's so lovely no but I was like how do you know oh so you didn't realize that I'd set up
- 3:30the podcast that's just like is there anything that says Vic doesn't listen to the podcast
- 3:38it's so funny I know and I was like thank you um I may have I must have mentioned it to them or
- 3:44they you know like New Zealand is a small place I was like they must know someone that knows someone
- 3:47and then someone said, I just listened to the podcast and heard.
- 3:50And I was like, oh, and then I listened.
- 3:52And I was like, I see.
- 3:54Me just broadcasting your family news to the whole world.
- 3:58You could honestly like bag me out or say something really incriminating
- 4:00and I probably wouldn't, the whole world would know before I knew.
- 4:05The whole world's not listening, however I wish they were.
- 4:09Dream big, dream big, yeah.
- 4:11Yeah, yeah, love it, love it.
- 4:13Can we talk about the fact that you have one to two drinks
- 4:17and lose your voice.
- 4:17Like the fact that you sound sick.
- 4:20I mean, you've got the most temperamental voice
- 4:22of anyone I know.
- 4:23Also, who the F gets sick in the middle of summer?
- 4:26I'm sorry.
- 4:27This is karma for me trying to do this
- 4:29back-to-back summer lifestyle.
- 4:31Oh my God, it is.
- 4:31You know what?
- 4:32The world's just like, we'll show you.
- 4:34That happened to me last year when I was in New Zealand
- 4:37and all of a sudden the London weather was insane.
- 4:41It was like I was chasing the clouds.
- 4:43You know, someone's like,
- 4:44you two are not doing what you're meant to be doing.
- 4:46Yeah, I think it's a big F you
- 4:49But did you have a massive night?
- 4:50Like what's going on with you?
- 4:51No, I had a funeral
- 4:53Oh my god, yeah, sorry
- 4:56So you haven't
- 4:56Because like every time I hear you lose your voice
- 4:58I'm like, oh, fix had it
- 4:59I know, there's definitely times
- 5:01There is definitely times
- 5:02Where I try to play it off like I haven't
- 5:04No, but this time I actually haven't
- 5:05Which just makes it worse
- 5:06Because I'm like, there was no fun involved
- 5:08And now I'm just angry at the world
- 5:10Because I hate being sick so much
- 5:11But then I kind of lean into it
- 5:13With Flower Man
- 5:14I'm like, help me
- 5:18I was thinking this Vic because we've obviously posted a photo of flower man on our Instagram now
- 5:23should we still call him flower man at this point it's like it's pretty obvious who he is you know
- 5:28and also what do I do about my new boyfriend you know do I give him a name like he doesn't
- 5:32listen to the podcast so he doesn't know that I've talked about him he can just be called
- 5:37home mr home mr home oh that's really cute I came downstairs yesterday or the day before
- 5:42actually these pants that I'm wearing are his no they're mine oh my god do they look that massive
- 5:48I can't see them okay and he was in the kitchen spraying vanish on the the stains that I had and
- 5:55like washed them and I just thought marry me you're like the equivalent of like that to a guy
- 6:02must be you know housewife energy cooking the most amazing meal or like I mean I don't even
- 6:08know what the equivalent was but I just saw it was like the sexiest thing I've ever seen
- 6:14I was dating a guy and I'd come out of like a pretty terrible relationship and this
- 6:17this new guy that I was dating I was like this light switch just didn't work and I was like oh
- 6:21it's just never really worked and then the next time I came over and he came over the light bulb
- 6:26and like changed the light bulb just like didn't even need to be asked and I was like and you're
- 6:30like my underwear have gone they've just fallen off all my dresses all my oh do you mean what
- 6:37I don't know
- 6:38I don't agree
- 6:39I don't agree
- 6:40Where did you go
- 6:41With that joke
- 6:42Like I need new clothes
- 6:44Oh no
- 6:44I meant like
- 6:45I'm so horny
- 6:46My pants have fallen off
- 6:46Yeah
- 6:47Okay
- 6:47I was going more like
- 6:49Oh my light bulb's broken
- 6:50He bought me a new one
- 6:51My dress is broken
- 6:52My car is broken
- 6:54My
- 6:55No no
- 6:56Also he could fix a dress
- 6:57A broken dress
- 6:58I mean getting out the
- 6:59Yeah
- 6:59Needle and thread
- 7:00That'd be pretty impressive
- 7:01But acts of service
- 7:02Gosh
- 7:03They go a long way
- 7:04Oh my god
- 7:04Any guy listening
- 7:05Acts of service
- 7:07Even amongst girlfriends or friends, you know, just a friend doing something for you without asking.
- 7:13Such a beautiful trait.
- 7:14It really is.
- 7:15Okay, should we talk about the news?
- 7:17Yeah.
- 7:17There's some really interesting things happening in the world right now.
- 7:21I'm super excited to talk through this.
- 7:23Should we start at the bottom?
- 7:24Oh, sure.
- 7:25And go reverse order?
- 7:27Of course.
- 7:27Let's do it.
- 7:29Okay.
- 7:29Oh, stunning.
- 7:31Yes.
- 7:32This is fascinating.
- 7:34and I think Vic when you say point number two make sure you say it in a way where you know
- 7:39this is going to be a social piece of content because I wholly F-U-C-K so if you've you must
- 7:48so if you've been living under a rock if you've been living under a rock you probably don't
- 7:56realize we probably do because I think it's even got to under the rocks is that there is a bit of
- 7:59a feud going on between the Beckhams.
- 8:01It's a live public family split, isn't it?
- 8:04I went to
- 8:05like a book club where I had not read the book last weekend.
- 8:08And the only thing we spoke about
- 8:10for an hour and a half was this.
- 8:12And there was one girl there who knew all these details and was just
- 8:15absolutely going for it.
- 8:16And it was?
- 8:17Whose side was she on?
- 8:19Oh, 100% the Beckhams.
- 8:21The Beckhams are so loved in the UK.
- 8:23It's like, don't with them.
- 8:25You know, like they have been
- 8:27kind of quote unquote royalty in the UK for a very long time.
- 8:31Everyone loves them.
- 8:32Well, most people love them, just like the royal family.
- 8:34And then you've got one son, just like the royal family,
- 8:37who has kind of come out and been like very much publicly dissing his parents.
- 8:43And I know this is old news, but one bit of news that I found out this week was...
- 8:48Say it slowly.
- 8:49Say it slowly.
- 8:51was that Nicola gets $1 million a month from her father as an allowance.
- 8:59Just $1 million in a bank account.
- 9:01$12 million a year.
- 9:03Like, what would you spend that on?
- 9:06I mean, I would be publicly dissing the Beckhams
- 9:08if I was getting $1 million into my bank account every month.
- 9:12You'd be staying in every hotel every night.
- 9:14You would be staying in, like, 10-star hotels.
- 9:17Oh, the robes I would be wearing.
- 9:19Oh, stunning.
- 9:21But like that for her dad is probably not that much because he is, he's a multi-billionaire,
- 9:27like multi, multi-million dollar billionaire.
- 9:28So he is a lot more wealthy than the Beckhams and he's made a lot of his money through,
- 9:34he's a seasoned investor, a very, very famous investor.
- 9:37So he's got a lot of money.
- 9:38But how does it instill like growing your own wealth and your work ethic and when you're
- 9:45just given a million dollars a month?
- 9:48But I think this is what a lot of, you know, there's all those studies around there's three generations when it comes to wealth.
- 9:54There's the ones who make it.
- 9:56Then there's the second.
- 9:57They work really hard to protect it.
- 9:58And then it's the third generation that kind of like spend it all.
- 10:01Yeah, because the first generation that makes it and the second generation sees them make it.
- 10:06So they know the hard work.
- 10:06So they have more respect.
- 10:08Yeah, more respect.
- 10:09And then the third generation don't see their grandparents essentially making it.
- 10:13So they spend it.
- 10:14Yeah.
- 10:15oh I just Vic I can't even imagine having being given that much money I mean no one I mean you
- 10:21just wouldn't have any motivation to go and make money why would you need to like it's just so if
- 10:27I was like honestly I love work and I get so much satisfaction from it and there's like just no way
- 10:36I would be working if I was getting a million into my bank account I'd just be doing charity work
- 10:41But that's the thing, right?
- 10:42You could use that to do something, to do your passion or to do philanthropic work.
- 10:47But yeah, I think that the overarching thing here is like wealth here is what's divided these families and what has made, from my understanding, Brooklyn be effectively estranged from his family.
- 11:00and I think it just shows that like wealth often exposes existing family tensions rather than
- 11:08fixes them and if you haven't set up you know put contracts in place for for marriages or amongst
- 11:17or wills like proper wills in terms of passing down wealth or property ownership all of that
- 11:22can create so so so much tension and I think this is a really good reminder I know it's from a very
- 11:27very wealthy group of families but it's I think it's a really good reminder that wealth transfer
- 11:35is becoming much earlier and much more emotional that parents are helping children financially
- 11:40much more now and for much longer and so it's really really important to have those kind of
- 11:47clear expectations and you know where does the money go just like contracts in place like all
- 11:53of that like we've talked about prenups we've talked about wills like this is kind of case in
- 11:58point about why that is so important because the Beckhams have around 500 million right everyone
- 12:03knows how much money they have but I think that a lot of people probably don't realize how much
- 12:07money the Peltz family have because there's a huge difference in the wealth between those families
- 12:13which from the outside you would just look and see like they're both really wealthy and they've
- 12:17both got heaps but comparatively nelson peltz who's the dad has a net worth of like 1.6 billion
- 12:26us dollars yeah which is so much more than 500 million so the the power and balance in terms
- 12:33of how much he can pay his daughter or give them is wildly different and it's kind of like the us
- 12:39and the british like he's very influential in kind of the us investing scene they're very influential
- 12:45probably in the in more in the uk you know sporting and fashion entertainment scene but
- 12:52yeah it's just been really interesting to see and and what happened well what i've
- 12:55it's funny because obviously everyone's speculating here right but what apparently the beacons did was
- 13:01copyright their children's names so if they want to use them on anything you know there's a copyright
- 13:06so they either pay a license fee or they buy it off them or whatever there's a contract in place
- 13:12so that's why people are saying like brooklyn beckham's hot sauce isn't named brooklyn beckham
- 13:18you know because he's not allowed to name it that so yeah there's just like lots of things when you
- 13:22become i know but then there's also even like people talking about the fact that the hot sauce
- 13:26was actually meant to be david's and then he gave it to brooklyn as the product because he was having
- 13:32a history about not having anything or like you know you just i guess so much of this is speculation
- 13:37right we don't actually really know what's going on behind closed doors the one thing i can't stop
- 13:41thinking about is like if your wife or partner or husband was getting a million dollars in their
- 13:46bank account every month what would you I mean I was screenshotting her engagement ring and zooming
- 13:51in at the size of it I mean how would you ever compete or buy anything for each other you know
- 13:58like no she can buy anything she wants like I wonder if there's a power imbalance even between
- 14:03them based on the financials because if she's being kind of bankrolled by her family and he's
- 14:09now cut off from his I wonder how that's going to play out from a relationship standpoint because
- 14:14I imagine they're so young I imagine if all of this stuff's happening with their family they
- 14:18probably don't have I don't know like I just wonder if they have stuff in place between them
- 14:22because that's where it gets so messy and that could happen at a much smaller scale as well
- 14:26right even if your partner was getting a thousand dollars a month a hundred from their family you
- 14:32know and you're getting nothing or you come from a wealthier family than your partners or like yeah
- 14:37There's money just, it's so crazy how it influences but also can dictate someone's future but can also motivate them, unmotivate them.
- 14:49Like there's so much psychology in money.
- 14:51Even just the idea I've got a few friends who own their houses or their parents have bought their houses and their partner.
- 14:59And in these two examples, it's heteronormative.
- 15:01So the guy is paying rent or, you know, rent money.
- 15:05and even that in itself like there's some men that would feel really emasculated by that
- 15:11there's some which is I'm by the way not saying is right but if you don't talk about having a leg
- 15:17up so for example your parents buy you a house like that's straight up a huge advantage on if
- 15:22it is what your partner has how how yeah how do you navigate though it's there's yeah there's so
- 15:28much complexity to it and I think it's just about having conversations right like if you're like
- 15:32actually, I really don't like it that we are living in the house
- 15:36that your parents have bought for you.
- 15:38Yeah, maybe it's you find somewhere new.
- 15:40Yeah, like, I don't know.
- 15:41There's just having a conversation about it rather than it stemming
- 15:44into something more frustrating and more systemic and, you know,
- 15:49harder to overcome.
- 15:51I just think having those conversations and setting up those,
- 15:54that pretences, setting up the.
- 15:57I know what you mean.
- 15:57Like setting up, setting the sort of standard or precedent.
- 16:00Foundations.
- 16:00Yeah.
- 16:01Yeah.
- 16:02I also, sorry, this is a side note.
- 16:04We can move on from the Beckhams in a second.
- 16:05But I didn't realize that Nicola Peltz's family, so like Nelson Peltz, is like a huge Trump supporter.
- 16:14Like he's super right winged and like really in bed with politicians.
- 16:20And, you know, I mean, like what a powerful kind of scary dynamic, even if you think about for the Beckhams.
- 16:25It's no joke.
- 16:26like imagine being it's like it's really hard to imagine all of that stuff that came out about
- 16:31posh spice do we call it anymore no victoria beckham dancing inappropriately on her son at
- 16:36the wedding in front of the family like that you just cannot imagine in what world that would ever
- 16:41happen i just would love to be a fly on the wall to know what the heck she is true or not i'm like
- 16:46to think there's 500 guests there that have seen that dance and it hasn't gone out you know probably
- 16:53leak it i would be saying i'd be like oh god the mum was trying to like pole dance on her son you
- 16:58like that would have come out sooner or accidentally airdrop it to someone on the plane and be like oh
- 17:02my gosh shit it's quite a good tactic who's gonna trace that back oh yeah it's gone okay
- 17:11um but i'm just loving all the memes as well gosh they're funny i know it's actually i don't think
- 17:15i'll get sick of this news story if it continues for the next year i really admire how they just
- 17:20have gone to ground the beacons your son has blasted you on social media and they have just
- 17:25not responded yeah like talk about taking the high road you could get paid so much for a tell-all
- 17:31like he's probably writing a book right now i don't know but i don't know i've got this feeling
- 17:35like they're gonna make it back to one another i mean maybe i'm being idealistic but i just
- 17:39i hope anyway he's so young honestly if they go out and blast him there's it's pretty hard to come
- 17:45back from that like they're probably trying to be like love you love you this sucks but love you
- 17:51he's like block block block but anyway we'll keep you updated on the Beckham drama yeah yeah yeah
- 17:57and try and find the tiniest little financial angle so that we can talk about it stunning
- 18:01research there Vic hundred million dollar pocket money very good angle 12 what oh yeah yeah sorry
- 18:07monthly yeah sorry annual yeah yeah yeah should we go back to the start or do we go should we
- 18:12just keep going up the wrong way of our yeah let's keep going up yeah okay best well best
- 18:17yeah best till last oh love it best till last okay the next news item we have is the cost of
- 18:23being a woman which i am obsessed with the story always oh i know but i'm also just the headline
- 18:29i'm just like well do you know what i saw this thing which we can talk about in more detail
- 18:34another time but it was someone doing a video on tiktok or instagram or whatever talking about how
- 18:40she looked into surrogacy and it was nearly 200 000 us to pay someone to carry your child i mean
- 18:48that's a lot of money you're saving your partner several times if you have more than one kid
- 18:54buy me dinner it should just be anyone that gets impregnated and goes through childbirth and labor
- 19:01labor instant 200 grand oh no i would have so many children yeah there needs to be some kind
- 19:05of financial exchange here because I'm literally putting my body on the line not pregnant don't
- 19:10worry maybe it's a side hustle I mean it would be for a lot of people but I think that's the thing
- 19:14it's because it's a lot of money well firstly it should be a lot of money because someone's
- 19:18putting their body on the line for not their child but secondly it's kind of sad if like that
- 19:23is the only option someone has is to like I mean I'm sure it's it's in the same same way that other
- 19:27people use their bodies it's like it's their choice they're happy doing it but there'll be
- 19:31so many people that can't afford that and therefore can't afford to have children yes
- 19:35But also my point is that's a huge cost that is not materialized
- 19:39for women that have kids.
- 19:41Just kind of love that there's a price tag on it that you can say,
- 19:44oh, no, this is how much it would cost if we had to pay for it,
- 19:47just so you know.
- 19:49If you've had three kids, you owe me $600,000 US, just so you know.
- 19:53Just so you know.
- 19:54You can set up a payment plan.
- 19:56You can do buy now, pay later.
- 19:59I'll be charging you interest, just so you know.
- 20:01just imagine being like you can't hold your baby until you've paid your last payment
- 20:05like you can't you can't you can't visit it sorry you want to touch its toe absolutely don't even
- 20:10think about it well you can touch its toe and that's it because that's all you've paid is like
- 20:14one tenth of the price you can't kiss it on the cheek sorry you don't own it yet you might think
- 20:18buy now pay later you get the goods and then pay for it not in this case you don't not in this case
- 20:24and there's interest okay sorry okay yeah so anyway there is a recent study that's been done
- 20:32which is the first male contraceptive pill so this is a startup called your choice therapeutics
- 20:41it's not a public company so unfortunately we can't invest in it but it is developing a pill
- 20:46that is a hormone-free male contraceptive pill and it is essentially designed to stop sperm
- 20:51production without messing around with testosterone.
- 20:54So this is huge news because until now,
- 20:59it's been essentially up to the woman to take contraception.
- 21:05Yes, we've got condoms.
- 21:06Condoms or vasectomy is really the only choice available to men.
- 21:11Whereas we get IUDs, we get contraceptive pills.
- 21:15It's so ridiculous when you think about it.
- 21:16What's the thing up?
- 21:18The urea?
- 21:19Oh, the Mirena.
- 21:20Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:21I've had that.
- 21:22And I think what this shows, though, is there's kind of two things that I'm taking away from this.
- 21:27It's like, firstly, that science is finally kind of catching up.
- 21:31Where we've, you know, there's biotech companies that only tested drugs on men for like so long.
- 21:37And we have very different makeups as human beings.
- 21:41But science is finally catching up to what women have had to carry alone for so many decades, which is contraception.
- 21:48and men are finally starting to show up.
- 21:51But the other thing with this is,
- 21:54I'm thinking, is this going to be an investing trend?
- 21:59There is so much revenue potential here
- 22:02if this gets off the ground
- 22:04and huge, huge, huge unmet market demand.
- 22:08There is nothing like this in the market right now.
- 22:11Yes, it depends on the uptake for men.
- 22:13I was about to say, what do you think the uptake will be?
- 22:16because I think, you know, when the pill came out,
- 22:19everyone was like, thank God I can have sex without having a baby, you know?
- 22:23And so for women, that was like exciting and it was a no-brainer
- 22:26because we didn't want to get pregnant, but we wanted to have sex.
- 22:29I just would be really interested to know how many men would consider taking this
- 22:33because like, what are the side effects?
- 22:34Is there the same amount of side effects as there are for women?
- 22:37You know, like, I mean, I genuinely think if the pill side effects were reversed,
- 22:41men would not be taking the pill.
- 22:43yeah no there is very few side effects because there's no testosterone impact there's very few
- 22:49side effects like mood swings low libido weight gain all that kind of stuff that you get when you
- 22:53take the pill like either your skin breaks out or it gets better your boobs get bigger or they
- 22:57get smaller like you put on weight you lose weight whatever it's like absolutely exhausted or crazy
- 23:03or scream at people like I mean honestly there's been some times where I've been on a particular
- 23:07pills and it's impacted my mood and personality beyond like scary amounts and I think coming
- 23:12back to what you said like in terms of the uptake like birth control pills have been have generated
- 23:18about 10 to 20 billion dollars a year for decades in the US and I think we're at a bit of a reckoning
- 23:26right now in society there is a coming to kind of like you know the whole me too movement like
- 23:33women getting a voice there's also more women in science now probably that are pushing research
- 23:38like this but even the financial element right we've got so much more independence like all of
- 23:42this kind of leans itself to like, no, actually, why should we be the ones that have to always
- 23:48take the contraceptive pill?
- 23:50Why can't you step up?
- 23:52You know, we've stepped up in terms of being
- 23:54financial contributors in the household.
- 23:56We've stepped up in the workplace.
- 23:57We've stepped up,
- 23:57you know, all of that.
- 23:58It's like, you can step up too.
- 24:00We can actually be equal players in this,
- 24:03in this society, you know, when it comes to birth control.
- 24:06And like, I don't know,
- 24:07I just feel like there's a bit of a reckoning going on and it could be quite game changing,
- 24:12but it would be very dependent on the update.
- 24:14I'd love to do like a social experiment
- 24:16or like some kind of like fox poppy situation.
- 24:18And I just ask a bunch of men,
- 24:20like, would you take a contraceptive pill?
- 24:22I saw this really interesting
- 24:24and I don't know if I've already shared this on the podcast.
- 24:26I'm sorry if I have, but you know,
- 24:28like in nine months,
- 24:29a man can impregnate someone every day.
- 24:32We can get pregnant once in nine months.
- 24:34I mean, sorry, but who needs a contraceptive pill?
- 24:37Probably not us.
- 24:39It's so bizarre to even think about,
- 24:40but I think this is so exciting.
- 24:42I think it's quite,
- 24:43it's very early stage at the moment,
- 24:44but this is like when you hear little things like this and then it might not
- 24:47be for another 12 months and then you hear something else and something else.
- 24:50And like,
- 24:51this is how the GLP-1,
- 24:53you know,
- 24:53protein started,
- 24:54you know,
- 24:54the weight loss drugs was that people,
- 24:57you know,
- 24:57people,
- 24:58there was first adopters,
- 24:59you know,
- 24:59a few companies,
- 25:00one company actually came out with it,
- 25:02the type of makeup of,
- 25:03of the drug.
- 25:04And then it got commercialized and then it blew up.
- 25:06So this is kind of why we're talking about this is like,
- 25:09is this the start of something else in a similar space in a similar vein maybe maybe not but yeah
- 25:15so when that protein started being talked about this is before ozempic came out in the same way
- 25:20did your ears prick up and think interesting like now it's not necessarily it wasn't a fully
- 25:26blown product but you just saw traces of it and thought interesting a weight loss drug that you
- 25:31can inject that would be huge and then you know maybe 12 months later ozempic came out yes but i
- 25:38didn't invest so that's this is my learning experience now that I am relaying to the
- 25:43community is that you know you're not gonna you're not gonna be able to get on the bandwagon for all
- 25:49investing trends but when you start getting into the mindset or you learn from ones you missed out
- 25:54on and and you try and identify new ones that's when you start learning and then you start mastering
- 25:59your craft sharing the learnings for all to benefit from love it vick speaking of glp ones
- 26:08oh gosh so the weight loss drugs they are obviously growing massively in popularity
- 26:14particularly in the us and it is estimated that airlines are about to save nearly 600
- 26:22million in fuel per year because there is less overweight people on flights which means the
- 26:30biggest cost to airlines is fuel so cheaper tickets cheaper tickets stop do you think that
- 26:37would happen though or would they not just take more profit i can't imagine people reversing how
- 26:43much stuff is probably a little a little bit of both right there's probably like oh actually we've
- 26:48got a bit of flexibility here with prices we could drop them a little bit because we've saved you
- 26:52know a couple of million on fuel but yeah they'd probably just pocket it and make make more profits
- 26:57but wild that it's impacting airlines that people are less heavy so therefore they have to carry
- 27:03less fuel i'm like oh my god i would never ever ever have thought it would get this far
- 27:09like which makes me sit here and think okay how far could it go there's so there must be so many
- 27:15industries that are positively benefited from there being less obese people in the world but
- 27:21there must also on the flip side be a lot of businesses that are not going to be as profitable
- 27:25because there's less obese people in the world yeah it would be interesting also at some stage
- 27:30for us to look at like what industries or companies are being negatively impacted by
- 27:35there being less overweight people but also from that so less fuel less oil oh my god and that that
- 27:44can impact the cost of oil prices as well right like yeah massive massive demand on oil is dropping
- 27:51less carbon emissions less global warming well that's actually amazing okay we're gonna jump
- 27:59to gold and silver because oh my gillians up one minute down the next i'm just like i know but it's
- 28:06also so interesting to watch what's going on because i remember when we started talking about
- 28:09this and you were so clearly nervous about it you were like when things go up like this they've got
- 28:15to come down you know and it was I thought it would take longer I mean you'd be so gutted if
- 28:21you'd bought stuff in the last little while my friend bought the day before it fell no no I
- 28:28warned her I was like honestly she sent it she's like what do you think was it Polly Marcus I've
- 28:33just got a feeling was it oh my god it totally was no comment no comment oh my god polly it's so
- 28:40funny she is the biggest what is it when you get a tidbit from a finance bro she is she is the hot
- 28:47she loves a hot tip she's the person on the other line when when leonardo caprio and wolf of wall
- 28:53street is like have i got a deal for you you know she's on the other line so much sign me up
- 29:00I'll send you my bank details.
- 29:02I know someone who also had invested heaps in silver
- 29:06and they'd made 50,000 pounds from it
- 29:09and then it dropped by whatever it's dropped by,
- 29:12which I'm sure we'll get to in a second.
- 29:13So they actually only made half the amount of returns
- 29:15that they had originally.
- 29:17And it's just so interesting, the psychology.
- 29:19They've still doubled their money from silver,
- 29:21but they feel like they've lost 25,000 pounds
- 29:23because they didn't sell at the top.
- 29:26There's so many learnings in this.
- 29:28I'm like, I can't keep up, you know, like it's like.
- 29:30Okay, let's break it down.
- 29:31Let's talk about what's happened, where it was, blah, blah, blah.
- 29:34Yeah.
- 29:35So gold has been, you know, over the last kind of 12 months,
- 29:39gold has gone up and up and up and up and up.
- 29:42And it's done fantastically well through 2025.
- 29:45And as kind of like a byproduct of that,
- 29:48silver in the last month is up, well, was up about 60% in one month.
- 29:55So it, and silver has never had a move like this.
- 29:57you know usually gold and silver they're commodities they're like an actual metal so
- 30:02they don't they're not volatile like stocks and shares you know they shouldn't be going up and
- 30:07down and sideways and around around the corner kind of thing like they should be you know just
- 30:12stable ish they're a store of wealth not a like a wealth generator if that makes sense
- 30:18anyway so yeah silver absolutely shot the lights out last month as a byproduct of gold doing well
- 30:23people were like you know what I'm going to jump on you know the next the next metal in line is
- 30:28silver I'm probably going to see bronze go up tomorrow or something it had just done fantastically
- 30:32well everyone was like oh my gosh and then there's this FOMO trade that starts happening and people
- 30:36are like oh it's going up I want to get on it I want to get on it and then literally in one day
- 30:42it had fallen 30 percent and just like the learnings never but never invest in something
- 30:49because of FOMO.
- 30:51God, as soon as you've heard about it
- 30:53and everyone's talking about it,
- 30:54it's not a good time to invest in something.
- 30:57No, and don't stress yourself out
- 30:58and think you've missed out.
- 30:59Like there is going to be
- 31:01so many other opportunities around the corner.
- 31:03Like you don't need to try and stress yourself out
- 31:05about timing these things right
- 31:06and jumping in and out at the right time.
- 31:08And like, that's not the aim of the game here
- 31:10when we're growing our wealth.
- 31:12It is over the long term.
- 31:13What's going to do well over the long term?
- 31:15Anyway, so when I saw this
- 31:16and you literally see this chart go like parabolic,
- 31:20like the price of silver has gone parabolic so the likelihood of it coming back down versus going up
- 31:26you know the same amount i'm just saying anyway so i was like absolutely not do not touch with
- 31:30the barge pole and she was like oh too late too late i've already bought some so i was like if
- 31:36anything go and sell your got your silver jewelry like go and sell your silver shares if you had any
- 31:43because yes that's that the price is going up but it's also only on paper and like you were just
- 31:47saying with that example before it's like everyone we're sitting there going woohoo I've done so well
- 31:53maybe some in silver but no no you haven't because that's just on paper you until you actually sell
- 31:58that then you haven't made those those gains or you haven't made that profit so and also in terms
- 32:04of that drop wasn't it the largest drop that has happened since like the early 1980s like wasn't it
- 32:11quite enormous in terms of the magnitude of drop a massive yeah massive massive drop and
- 32:18it's all because people are worried the reason that gold and silver have gone up so much is
- 32:23because there is a lot of a lot of newly created gold and silver etfs so there's a lot of etfs
- 32:30like passive what we call passive money so people just investing in you know a basket of of gold and
- 32:35silver funds essentially and then also the central banks so the banks of each country so each bank
- 32:43has a kind of like a head honcho bank and they have been buying uh gold and silver as well and
- 32:50it's all because there's also global tensions there's you know all this kind of political mess
- 32:56going on and those commodities are considered safe havens but when too many people buy them at once
- 33:03their prices go a bit out of whack and so do their returns anyway so it's gonna be interesting to see
- 33:10what happens but for those of you who missed the silver bandwagon like don't stress yourself out
- 33:15because I think this is a really important lesson in investing things go up and down and you don't
- 33:21want to be the one buying that last share before it falls yeah it's just oh my god do not be uh
- 33:31just be boring invest in the boring stuff it pays off at the end of the day i know no like for
- 33:36example even now i'm like oh fun like the idea of buying stuff when it's down to me is exciting and
- 33:44i know that that's not a long-term strategy either really because you should just be buying
- 33:48consistently over periods of time but but that's better than buying high right you're buying low
- 33:53selling high like that's better than buying high and selling low you know like that's
- 33:59but it's it's psychology again you know like we all we get excited when everyone's talking
- 34:05about something we want in and it's yeah you know whether it is the latest dress the latest movie
- 34:10the latest restaurant the latest stock the latest commodity like you want to be included you want to
- 34:15be part of society you want to be involved in that conversation and be accepted so you want to invest
- 34:21in it but just be the smarter one it's like the warren buffett saying when there's be fearful
- 34:26when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful when everyone is being greedy and
- 34:31buying gold and silver like they have been lately that's when you should be fearful yeah which makes
- 34:36sense because it's like everyone's piling in there's got to be a big and when everyone's like
- 34:41oh screw that i'd never buy that oh that's you know in the toilet or whatever i don't people
- 34:46say but then you should be taking that little nugget and going hmm because yeah if we're
- 34:52long-term investors there is time for things to turn around yeah and then I guess very high level
- 34:57there's been a there's been a lot like a lot of movement going on in the stock market lately
- 35:02we've got reporting season as well so there's lots of moves in different companies because
- 35:06they're announcing their financial results we had Microsoft down 11 percent but ears pricking up
- 35:15ears are pricking up exactly hello hello hello i actually had another friend text me and i love
- 35:21that my friends are texting me so good they're like did you see what happened to microsoft i was
- 35:24like yeah baby let's buy yeah baby iconic it's probably not the response she was expecting
- 35:36yeah we've also had bitcoin falling bitcoins down so in october 2025 it was 124 000 us dollars
- 35:44it's now 74 000 oh ears pricking my ears are so pricked out yeah ding ding ding there's so many
- 35:51things i need to go shopping for also the oil price oil price is falling this is good for airlines
- 35:56again and that's because the tensions in there with the us and iran are easing so oil price
- 36:01falling means cheaper petrol means you know people have more disposable income it means it's good for
- 36:08airlines cheaper air travel yeah there's been a lot going on so much and disney disney has a new
- 36:14ceo no longer bob eiger bob eiger oh my gosh what's happened to him no he's gone we're going
- 36:21why i thought he was everyone was so excited when he came in like not even a year ago uh 2022 oh my
- 36:27god i've been paying attention for that long three four five stunning yeah he kind of came back as a
- 36:33bit of a parachute like a help us yeah yeah and i mean he hasn't really done that well to be honest
- 36:39it's the stock still done worse than the s&p 500 but it is now he's now passing the baton to the
- 36:46head of uh it's theme parks division hmm yeah which is going really well actually so is this
- 36:54positive is this not not too sure i think i think disney's such an interesting one right because
- 36:59you've got the streaming platform that's doing really well like the netflix version you know
- 37:04disney plus which have you been watching tell me lies oh my goodness literally about to say
- 37:10it is so good but so triggering like the most toxic relationship shit you've ever seen i find
- 37:18myself screaming at the screen going walk away walk away oh my god i was like standing a hundred
- 37:24percent i was standing in this train station trying to download an episode before a train
- 37:28was coming and I was like come on download hurry up and then I missed the train but I was like god
- 37:32my obsession here it's like so I have such a love-hate relationship with it to the point where
- 37:36I'm not sure if I want to continue the season it's so effed up what's happening I can't believe
- 37:42they date in real life I'd be so turned off purely by like the character that he plays on his job
- 37:48yeah I don't know where I was going now with that you were saying Disney well you're saying the
- 37:52streaming platform's actually doing quite well like it's an interesting one because the streaming
- 37:56sides does well yeah and then you've got these theme parks which are also doing well and they
- 38:01own a lot of property they've got a big property portfolio from the theme parks they own and i
- 38:06don't know it's just it's it's been a great business but can it continue to evolve when
- 38:13you've got such big giants like netflix you know is that why when bob i came in he couldn't you
- 38:19know he didn't have the big hail mary that we thought he would you know because times have
- 38:23changed from when Disney was so successful.
- 38:27I just feel like if you look at like historic brands,
- 38:30like Disney, Disney was huge when we were babies, you know, it was, I think it's evolved pretty
- 38:34amazingly.
- 38:35Like when Disney Plus first came out, I was like, lame, I'm not getting Disney Plus.
- 38:40Three years later, missing my train to download something on Disney Plus, you know, like I think
- 38:45they've evolved pretty well.
- 38:47I agree.
- 38:47I was like, why would I download Disney Plus?
- 38:49I don't want
- 38:49Finding Nemo and like, you know, Frozen.
- 38:52Same.
- 38:53I was like, oh, I don't want a cartoon.
- 38:55And here we are.
- 38:56Oh my God.
- 38:57Addicted.
- 38:57Yeah.
- 38:58You're right.
- 38:59And this is like, this is part of investing, right?
- 39:02It's like figuring out what are the companies that stand the test of time and have leaders
- 39:07that can evolve as times change.
- 39:09Yeah.
- 39:10And not be the BlackBreeze and the Nokias and the Kodaks of the world.
- 39:14Oh, so iconic though.
- 39:16Those brands.
- 39:17I'm like, oh, nostalgia.
- 39:18you i know but kodak came up with the digital camera and shut it down because it would
- 39:21cannibalize the business amazon came up with the kindle and got advised not to release it
- 39:27because it would cannibalize what their existing business was which was selling books online and
- 39:33people were like do not do it do not do it and jeff bezos was like and did it anyway yeah go jeff
- 39:39hate to say it but that was a good call okay lastly let's talk about spacex because this
- 39:42is really interesting yeah leaving the best till last i don't know i think we've had some
- 39:47absolute pullers I was almost thinking let's go back to front always that was so good
- 39:52just throw a spanner in there at 7am in the morning for you I know
- 39:57I know the dedication to the podcast 7am record I think I've been on pretty good form considering
- 40:02don't you think same yeah yeah you have been too for 8pm New Zealand time god I can't wait
- 40:07to we're in the same country see you soon I know I know just like not talking to a screen as either
- 40:13Oh, yeah, yeah, I know.
- 40:15It's so much more fun.
- 40:16We also have a beautiful podcast set up to show you.
- 40:20Oh, my God, I can't wait to see it.
- 40:23I cannot wait.
- 40:23We'll do a reveal.
- 40:24We'll do a reveal.
- 40:25Oh, my God, I can't wait to see it.
- 40:26SpaceX.
- 40:27So there was rumors last week that SpaceX and Tesla were going to merge.
- 40:34So SpaceX is Elon Musk's space company,
- 40:37and Tesla is obviously the electric vehicle company that he owns as well.
- 40:40He also owns X, which was Twitter that he bought.
- 40:44And he also owns XAI, which is an AI company that he's created.
- 40:49So he runs and owns four companies.
- 40:52These are four massive companies.
- 40:54And this has kind of been the grievance with Tesla shareholders for so long is that he's so distracted.
- 40:59And then he got into politics and everyone's like, oh, my goodness, can you just focus on, you know, your duty to shareholders and growing shareholder wealth?
- 41:06Tell me you have ADHD without telling me you have ADHD.
- 41:10tell me of 14 children that you need to provide for without oh my god how does he survive i mean
- 41:16it just blows my mind to think there's four giant companies that he runs and owns like what are they
- 41:21involving him in you'd have to be so strict with your time i know there would be no like sorry i
- 41:27forgot about the meeting but it's also like excuse me what do you what color what color rug should we
- 41:32get for the office you know he'd be like yeah absolutely imagine being his wife and being like
- 41:36hey, what do you want for dinner?
- 41:36He'd be like, I do not have time to think about dinner.
- 41:38I don't eat.
- 41:39I'm Elon Musk.
- 41:39I don't, yeah.
- 41:41Yes, so last week there was talk of SpaceX and Tesla merging.
- 41:44And Tesla shares went up.
- 41:46Everyone was getting really excited.
- 41:48But it came out that he is merging SpaceX and XAI.
- 41:53So his AI company and his space company.
- 41:56And this is all ahead of what is a potential SpaceX IPO this year,
- 42:03which will be the second largest IPO ever in the world.
- 42:07Oh my God, I would have FOMO with us if I couldn't invest in the IPO.
- 42:11So this deal, this SpaceX and XAI deal, which is two private companies,
- 42:17combining those businesses creates a business worth $1.25 trillion.
- 42:23Oh my God.
- 42:24And that means when SpaceX comes to IPO, yes, it'll be the second most largest IPO,
- 42:30but it's going to raise about $50 billion.
- 42:33To think that money has to come from somewhere, right?
- 42:35So people, if they're participating in an IPO,
- 42:38so it's great to have a lot of IPOs.
- 42:40Sorry, IPOs just mean when companies go from private to public
- 42:43so we can buy shares in them.
- 42:46When a lot of companies do that, that money has to come.
- 42:48Like if I want to invest in this, I might sell some shares in Amazon
- 42:52or I might sell some shares in Google or something.
- 42:56Interesting.
- 42:58When that's on mass or such a big deal, it does kind of suck.
- 43:03Resource from other places.
- 43:05Yeah, it sucks money from elsewhere.
- 43:06So it's just something to be aware of when you do have a big, big, big IPO.
- 43:11But Vic, why is he merging them?
- 43:13I don't really understand what the XAI and SpaceX,
- 43:17how are they going to be compatible or working together?
- 43:20Has he talked about what the point behind doing it is?
- 43:25The idea is to almost create this universe.
- 43:28So there is talk already of data centers, AI in space, you know, AI integrated in space exploration, space commercialization.
- 43:38I mean, there's talk that he is going to combine them all eventually.
- 43:44Oh my God.
- 43:45Oh my God.
- 43:46the Tesla vehicles.
- 43:46So he's got the electric vehicles and there is a lot of autonomous driving and AI integrated
- 43:52into that.
- 43:53Then he's got his rocket ships with SpaceX and there is, you know, we probably haven't
- 43:59even seen it yet in terms of what AI could do with that.
- 44:03He's then got X, which is Twitter, which is what he says he uses to get a lot of the data
- 44:08and a lot of the data and machine learning comes from that, which feeds into his AI.
- 44:14So it's all kind of interconnected in this weird way.
- 44:18And it just kind of scares me a little.
- 44:20I mean, also, he must be getting up there to like, you know, is he the richest man in the world already?
- 44:26So if SpaceX IPOs at kind of, you know, let's say $1.5 trillion is slightly higher than what it is now, a trillion dollar valuation.
- 44:36And Tesla hits its performance targets, which we've kind of spoken about.
- 44:41He's got some pretty audacious performance targets and he gets payouts if he achieves those.
- 44:47Yes, Elon Musk will be most likely the first ever person to have a trillion dollars in a personal fortune.
- 44:57One trillion.
- 44:58We've got billionaires.
- 44:59We've got millionaires.
- 45:00We've got millions of millionaires.
- 45:02We do not have any trillionaires on this planet and he could be the first one.
- 45:07Oh, the most money in the world sitting with Elon Musk.
- 45:10Oh, shit.
- 45:11at least a lot of his wealth is tied up in companies rather than in his pocket.
- 45:15True, but that also exerts power, right?
- 45:20I don't know.
- 45:20I feel like, I think the big learning from
- 45:22this though, is if we take the dollar values away from it and a trillion, a gazillion, whatever,
- 45:28the way that he has generated and grown his wealth is through ownership, like founding
- 45:35businesses and having large stakes in them, it's not from having a salaried job and getting a pay
- 45:42rise each year and it growing with inflation.
- 45:46The way that people generate wealth is through
- 45:50owning stakes in businesses or founding businesses and holding onto them for the long term.
- 45:56Yeah, I completely agree.
- 45:57And I think that the more that we can talk about this, the better,
- 46:00because we've sort of touched on it a few times,
- 46:02the idea of, yeah, it's not just investing we need to do,
- 46:05it's also starting businesses.
- 46:08You know, like so many of us don't think of ourselves as investors
- 46:10and so many of us don't think of ourselves as business owners,
- 46:12but actually to create true wealth you do,
- 46:15or, you know, the magnitude of wealth.
- 46:17Like it's not going to be from, yeah, your salary that you get from your job.
- 46:20You do need to think about how you can zoom out
- 46:23and create wealth in different ways
- 46:25because it's kind of, it all honestly links back to the idea
- 46:29of not being in a meritocracy really anymore.
- 46:31Like, yes, there's a heritocracy.
- 46:33There's so many different,
- 46:34like the way that wealth is created
- 46:36and shifted has changed enormously
- 46:38in the last 10 years.
- 46:39And I agree.
- 46:40I think that's such a good learning from this.
- 46:42Like there's just absolutely no way
- 46:43he would come anywhere close to this
- 46:45if he hadn't started four businesses.
- 46:47And yes, like Elon Musk for all his sins
- 46:49and you can have opinions about him or whatever.
- 46:52But we always talk about,
- 46:55well, we talk a lot about investing
- 46:56in public companies, you know, and buying shares in them.
- 47:01But like there is a whole world of
- 47:03investing in private companies, which is becoming a lot more accessible.
- 47:06And, you know, that is a
- 47:09great way to diversify as well.
- 47:11You know, investing in say five or six different companies, it might
- 47:14be small amounts to begin with.
- 47:16And then one of those does really well.
- 47:18And then you can sell
- 47:21your stake in that and buy in another few companies.
- 47:23And that's how you start growing your
- 47:25wealth but to get wealth not in the trillions like it'd be nice to have wealth in the trillions but
- 47:31even to get i just don't even know i know actually what would you even do with that i mean like
- 47:36if you're not single-handedly funding world peace what on earth are you doing with that money
- 47:42yeah it'd be quite amazing if that was in the hands of women i think the world would just be
- 47:48such a different place 100 like the next contenders in line to be trillionaires is
- 47:53Jeff Bezos, Jensen Hung, which is the NVIDIA CEO and founder.
- 48:00There's no woman in that list.
- 48:02And I just think, yeah, if it was Melinda Gates,
- 48:05the world would be a very different place.
- 48:08Agreed.
- 48:09I loved that, Vic.
- 48:12I feel so educated and cool going into the world listening to all of that.
- 48:18No, seriously, I was thinking before we were going to this record,
- 48:21I was thinking, God, I'm like so grateful that I'm interested in this now.
- 48:25Even like there's this magazine that gets delivered to my boyfriend's house and it's
- 48:30called The Week and it's got all of this stuff about what's happening in the world and businesses
- 48:36and politics and stuff.
- 48:37And a couple of years ago, there's just no way that I could have read that or understood
- 48:41it or been interested in it.
- 48:42And now I'm just like, ugh.
- 48:43Like there was this article about AI girlfriends and boyfriends, which we must get to at some
- 48:48stage.
- 48:48It was crazy.
- 48:50no it was literally this guy that he he's he's so in love with his AI girlfriend that they're
- 48:55planning on adopting kids together and that he's he's thinking like oh god it might be a little
- 48:59bit weird for the kids going to school and talking about mom you know because mom's an AI mother
- 49:04it's like holy shit you know but stuff like that like I just would not be able to take part in
- 49:11those conversations or read about it or be interested if it wasn't for this podcast so
- 49:15thank you loved it for anyone else that's listening who's like oh never thought i'd care
- 49:20about the economy or business news send it to your friends it's so important for us to all start
