- 0:00Speaker 1: Now. There is a lot happening over the dry season.
- 0:02Speaker 1: There always is, and Territorians are stretching up and preparing
- 0:07Speaker 1: for the fiftieth NT City to Serve. It's taking place
- 0:11Speaker 1: this Sunday morning. Hundreds are expecting to gather to take
- 0:14Speaker 1: part in the twelve kilometer, the four kilometer and the
- 0:17Speaker 1: one point nine to five k events. And joining me
- 0:21Speaker 1: on the line is well known Territory and he's an
- 0:24Speaker 1: absolute superstar runner, winner of last year's event. His name
- 0:28Speaker 1: is Tim Hewitt and he's on the line. Good morning
- 0:31Speaker 1: to you, Tim.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Hey, good morning, thanks for having me on.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Lovely lovely to have you on the show, mate. How
- 0:37Speaker 3: are you How are you faring ahead of Sunday?
- 0:41Speaker 2: Yeah, hopefully you're going okay. I've jumped out of the
- 0:44Speaker 2: video event trying to get somebody ready to go. Yeah,
- 0:48Speaker 2: not a bit good. It's always a great race. Yeah.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I'll keep coming back for as soon as I can. Yeah. Yeah,
- 0:56Speaker 2: feeling good now mate.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Last year you won the event in a time of
- 1:00Speaker 1: forty minutes and twenty six seconds, So that's averaging for
- 1:04Speaker 1: our listeners out there who aren't runners, that is averaging
- 1:07Speaker 1: just around three minutes eleven a kilometer.
- 1:11Speaker 3: That is bloody fast.
- 1:13Speaker 1: There's no other way of putting it, but to keep
- 1:15Speaker 1: it that speed for that distance is phenomenal.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, run a bit bend off old age.
- 1:27Speaker 2: So hoping to go smilar similar this year. We'll see
- 1:31Speaker 2: how it goes.
- 1:32Speaker 3: I had a look. I've done a bit of research.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I like to do my research before interviews, and I
- 1:36Speaker 1: had to look at the at the previous years as well.
- 1:39Speaker 1: You won the year prior as well, but it looked
- 1:41Speaker 1: like you'd done a good improvement on your time last
- 1:44Speaker 1: year comparatively to the year prior.
- 1:46Speaker 3: What did you attribute that to team?
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I've had and the year before as well. That
- 1:53Speaker 2: was in October. That was in the peak of COVID,
- 1:56Speaker 2: so that was ather time because it was bloody high
- 2:00Speaker 2: and then sick that year the next year, and then yeah,
- 2:07Speaker 2: last year, I think, yeah, I was in a better spot,
- 2:09Speaker 2: doing a bit more training, and conditions were good, so
- 2:13Speaker 2: it all sort of came together a bit more and
- 2:16Speaker 2: I'm hoping, yeah that this year. Yeah, I think it
- 2:19Speaker 2: looks like conditions to be good and yeah, the body's
- 2:22Speaker 2: still holding up, so hopefully it will be something similar
- 2:24Speaker 2: to last year.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it is.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Looking like it's going to be nice and cool, which
- 2:28Speaker 1: will hopefully be a good thing.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I'm looking forward to it. It's nice to
- 2:34Speaker 2: get this kind of early early dry season conditions in here.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Tim, How is it to win such an iconic event,
- 2:41Speaker 1: you know here in Darwin it is something that everybody
- 2:44Speaker 1: loves getting out to each and every dry season. I
- 2:47Speaker 1: know we had that one year when it happened when
- 2:50Speaker 1: it was very.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Hot in October and it was much tougher run.
- 2:54Speaker 1: But mate, how you know, how good is it to
- 2:57Speaker 1: get out and be part of such an iconic event,
- 3:01Speaker 1: but not only be part of it, to cross that
- 3:03Speaker 1: finish line first.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Yeah, look, it's it's great. I'm fortunate to be able
- 3:10Speaker 2: to have done it there a couple of times. But
- 3:13Speaker 2: it's a great event I always. Yeah, it's something I
- 3:16Speaker 2: look forward to every year and I really appreciate that
- 3:20Speaker 2: that it gets you know, that it gets put on.
- 3:23Speaker 2: It's you know, the Darwin Fury doesn't have as quite
- 3:26Speaker 2: a bigger running scene as some of the other major cities,
- 3:30Speaker 2: so it's really nice to have, you know, this event
- 3:33Speaker 2: which is really well put together and great course and yeah,
- 3:37Speaker 2: like a really good atmosphere. So it's it's always good
- 3:41Speaker 2: and tim for.
- 3:42Speaker 3: You throughout this year. I know that you are a
- 3:44Speaker 3: fantastic athlete.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Mate.
- 3:45Speaker 3: What else have you got planned? Any goals for the year?
- 3:49Speaker 2: Yeah, the big goal for this year. I'm in the
- 3:52Speaker 2: middle of a sort of marathon training block for Gold
- 3:55Speaker 2: Coast which is early July, so you know this this
- 4:00Speaker 2: is fir fits in nicely to that block. But yeah,
- 4:04Speaker 2: the big game is Gold Coast Marathon early July. And
- 4:09Speaker 2: you know, I've tried to run a PB in that
- 4:13Speaker 2: and yeah, hope the body holds up.
- 4:15Speaker 1: How look in terms of your PB, how will that
- 4:19Speaker 1: sort of set you up comparatively to some of the
- 4:21Speaker 1: other athletes that you're going to be up against. And
- 4:24Speaker 1: you know what kind of I guess what kind of
- 4:26Speaker 1: placing might you be looking at because a lot of
- 4:28Speaker 1: Territorians are going to be wanting to see you do well.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, Australian running I think is majory up at
- 4:36Speaker 2: the moment. So I think it'll be pretty competitive at
- 4:39Speaker 2: Gold Coast. The least international people there as well, I guess.
- 4:42Speaker 2: But it's a fast course. I'll be hoping to sort
- 4:47Speaker 2: of run under two twenty five and that will I
- 4:50Speaker 2: guess put me, yeah, somewhere around like the thirtieth sort
- 4:54Speaker 2: of something, depending who shows up. But yeah, I mean
- 4:58Speaker 2: there's a big gap to like the the very elite runners.
- 5:01Speaker 2: But you know that's okay.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Well, the big thing is, you know, you're like you
- 5:07Speaker 1: are juggling. And this is what I find so admirable,
- 5:09Speaker 1: is you're juggling like you're juggling your training, you're obviously
- 5:12Speaker 1: juggling life in general, and work like it's hard.
- 5:16Speaker 3: It's a hard thing to do. Yeah it is.
- 5:20Speaker 2: We've had our second kid just two months ago now,
- 5:23Speaker 2: so yeah, probably not commit to math and block but yeah,
- 5:30Speaker 2: so and unfortunately only I'm only working three days at
- 5:33Speaker 2: the moment. But yeah, it is hard, but I guess
- 5:35Speaker 2: it's good. It just forced me to get out the
- 5:37Speaker 2: door early and get it done and then be around
- 5:40Speaker 2: at home, you know, for the responsibility. It's going to work.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Wonderful stuff, will make all the very best for the
- 5:48Speaker 1: city to serve. But really keen to catch up with
- 5:50Speaker 1: you as well, you know, when you are heading off
- 5:53Speaker 1: for the Gold Coast Marathon. I think it's fantastic, so
- 5:55Speaker 1: wonderful to see a great territory and doing really wonderful
- 5:59Speaker 1: things and under two twenty five for forty two kilometers, mate,
- 6:04Speaker 1: you are an absolute machine.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I'll have to keep myself accountable now that
- 6:09Speaker 2: I've said that, so yeah, i'll what that. But yeah,
- 6:14Speaker 2: first thing first, Well we'll go on Sunday and have
- 6:18Speaker 2: a good race and be good to see a lot
- 6:19Speaker 2: of people there and yeah, and hopefully you know people
- 6:23Speaker 2: have enjoyed. And yeah, keep considering getting out and running
- 6:27Speaker 2: as a bit of a hobby.
- 6:29Speaker 1: It is a great thing to do, particularly if your
- 6:31Speaker 1: body can can handle it. How you did mention it
- 6:34Speaker 1: a couple of times? How is yours holding up?
- 6:37Speaker 2: Yeah? I think it's all beings considered, it's pretty good.
- 6:40Speaker 2: It's the most cave I've done, you know. Ever, you know,
- 6:44Speaker 2: a few niggles, but nothing that is stopping me yet
- 6:48Speaker 2: and hopefully not for the next next week. Yeah, but
- 6:52Speaker 2: you know that you're always going to have something, yeah, manage.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Yeah, it's It's just one of those things I suppose,
- 6:59Speaker 1: isn't it. Your body is going to the further you
- 7:01Speaker 1: push it, you know, the harder. It's going to struggle
- 7:03Speaker 1: at different times, but you keep on keeping on mate.
- 7:06Speaker 1: For our listeners, how many kilometers are you averaging some
- 7:09Speaker 1: weeks when you are training for that marathon?
- 7:13Speaker 2: At the moment, I'm hitting Yeah, maybe like one and
- 7:17Speaker 2: twenty k a week.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Right.
- 7:20Speaker 2: It's not as much as you know I probably should
- 7:23Speaker 2: be doing, but I feel like it's enough, all things considered.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Good on you, all the very best for the weekend,
- 7:31Speaker 1: and all the very best with that continuation of your
- 7:35Speaker 1: training for the Gold Coast Marathon. Thanks so much for
- 7:38Speaker 1: your time this morning. We'll catch up with you very soon.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you for that. Yeah, I look forward to
- 7:43Speaker 2: catching up for later.
- 7:44Speaker 3: On good stuff. Good on your tim. Thank you.
