- 0:00Speaker 1: We mentioned during the game, coach, this is kind of
- 0:02Speaker 1: like playoff baseball. Now, we got these three games here
- 0:06Speaker 1: and then next week in Mason, Ohio. From your perspective
- 0:09Speaker 1: when you were sitting there and managing this thing, is
- 0:11Speaker 1: that what you were thinking.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Yeah, well they're all they're all playoff games. Now you're right,
- 0:15Speaker 2: and you know we're playing for first place. I think
- 0:17Speaker 2: we're a first place alone now with the results of
- 0:20Speaker 2: the other games, with Saint John's losing and and uh
- 0:23Speaker 2: and Xavier losing, so I think everybody's one game back
- 0:26Speaker 2: of us. So we're playing for We're playing for first
- 0:27Speaker 2: tomorrow and then we do that, we'll be playing for
- 0:30Speaker 2: first on Saturday too, so you know, overall, you know,
- 0:34Speaker 2: I know, we made a big error there at the
- 0:36Speaker 2: end of the game. Thought our defense was was very good.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Other than that one play, I mean, natter walk through
- 0:40Speaker 2: med a heck of a catch in the third inning,
- 0:42Speaker 2: kept two runs.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Off the board in left field. That saves the game.
- 0:45Speaker 2: In retrospect, Manix de lane and made a couple of
- 0:47Speaker 2: really nice plays at third base tonight. Peyton made a
- 0:50Speaker 2: couple of nice plays at second as well. You know,
- 0:54Speaker 2: we uh, we played better defense we have been playing
- 0:57Speaker 2: terrible defense at Elliott Ballpark and and then I say that,
- 1:00Speaker 2: and you know, we make a big, a big two
- 1:03Speaker 2: run er, you know, late and Peyton had to go
- 1:06Speaker 2: a long way. We're in no doubles right there, so
- 1:08Speaker 2: they outfielders have their backs up against the wall. So
- 1:10Speaker 2: it's gonna be a tough catch. But I think he'd
- 1:12Speaker 2: agrees one that's got to get made in the moment,
- 1:14Speaker 2: and it didn't get made, so it makes a.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Little bit tighter.
- 1:17Speaker 2: And then Charlie Hale just proved these human he's been
- 1:19Speaker 2: so he's been lights out and he was getting behind
- 1:22Speaker 2: we we but we're looking at it like, well he
- 1:24Speaker 2: struck out five or six. We want some whifts right now.
- 1:28Speaker 2: The defense, you know, we don't want to put more
- 1:30Speaker 2: pressure on our defense.
- 1:31Speaker 3: The balls.
- 1:31Speaker 2: You know, it was it was getting on us a
- 1:33Speaker 2: little quickly there on the wet turf, and we were
- 1:37Speaker 2: looking for some swings and misses and it was just
- 1:39Speaker 2: time to go to Greg Shaw. And then I'm watching
- 1:42Speaker 2: him and he throws three balls to the backstop and
- 1:44Speaker 2: warm ups and it's like, can this get any easier?
- 1:47Speaker 2: I mean that one one time, can we have an
- 1:49Speaker 2: easy one on Friday night and stores.
- 1:51Speaker 3: We have not had one easy one. It's Thursday night.
- 1:54Speaker 2: That's right, it's Thursday, Tomorrow night, Friday opening night, opening
- 1:57Speaker 2: night in stores of the weekend.
- 1:59Speaker 3: It has been it has not been paying for it.
- 2:02Speaker 1: So you had a decision to make there with Charlie
- 2:04Speaker 1: Haill to keep him in. He had sixty plus pitches.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I mean, I know he started a bunch of games
- 2:09Speaker 1: this year, so he's done that before. But come on
- 2:12Speaker 1: out of the pen and doing that, Is that a
- 2:13Speaker 1: different thing for a pitcher.
- 2:14Speaker 3: No, he's done both. He's done both.
- 2:17Speaker 2: He's and he's been very good in both roles. He's
- 2:20Speaker 2: been our greatest competitor. I think, you know, he doesn't
- 2:23Speaker 2: have the best stuff on the team, but we've got
- 2:25Speaker 2: some good competitors and he is. He is I think
- 2:28Speaker 2: the guy that most of his teammates want to play
- 2:32Speaker 2: behind h because he works so fast. One of the
- 2:33Speaker 2: good things that Villanova was doing was.
- 2:36Speaker 3: They did try to slow him down.
- 2:38Speaker 2: They weren't getting in the box right away, and I
- 2:40Speaker 2: think that might have a little something to do with
- 2:41Speaker 2: him getting out of rhythm. But he's normally ahead of
- 2:44Speaker 2: the hitters.
- 2:44Speaker 3: He was behind.
- 2:45Speaker 2: We saw that, and we were tempted to go to
- 2:47Speaker 2: Shaw in the night to start the night. That's probably
- 2:49Speaker 2: what we should have done, but Charlie's just it's hard
- 2:54Speaker 2: to take him off the mound once he's on the mound,
- 2:56Speaker 2: because that might have been the first time I've done
- 2:57Speaker 2: it in a long time where it wasn't I did,
- 3:00Speaker 2: the outcome wasn't decided, and but he'll be back, he'll
- 3:03Speaker 2: he'll bounce back, and he was kind of done for
- 3:05Speaker 2: the weekend, so we're thinking, do we want to show
- 3:07Speaker 2: them Shaw as well. There's a lot that goes into
- 3:10Speaker 2: that decision, but it should have been made. I should
- 3:11Speaker 2: have I should have gone with Shaw to start.
- 3:13Speaker 1: The ninth So you're telling me that head coaches managers
- 3:16Speaker 1: second guest themselves.
- 3:17Speaker 3: All the time. Yeah, I thought that was my job. No,
- 3:21Speaker 3: I mean, you're you're talking. You know.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I got Desi in one ear saying, hey, you know,
- 3:26Speaker 2: he's not sharp, he's behind. I know that he's striking
- 3:28Speaker 2: guys out, he's not sharp, he's behind, he doesn't look
- 3:30Speaker 2: like himself. And I said, yeah, I know, and then
- 3:32Speaker 2: Josh says, I feel more comfortable with him, and then
- 3:35Speaker 2: ultimately gonna make the call I wind up, you know,
- 3:37Speaker 2: leaving them and we're getting a little bit more trouble
- 3:40Speaker 2: as a result. But fortunately Shaw came in and did
- 3:43Speaker 2: his job. He's closed some games, paid Charlie Hale's closed
- 3:47Speaker 2: some games. Joe Talla Rico's closed some games. Paxton Myers
- 3:53Speaker 2: has closed some games. So we have some guys that
- 3:55Speaker 2: are used to doing it. It's it, but it's often
- 3:58Speaker 2: an adventure. It's it doesn't uh, it's that nothing's coming
- 4:01Speaker 2: easy this year, and I'm fortunate that I think one
- 4:04Speaker 2: of the things that was good in the outcome, obviously
- 4:09Speaker 2: it was another one run win. We've had a bunch
- 4:11Speaker 2: of those down the stretch here. We didn't have any
- 4:14Speaker 2: for the first two thirds, three quarters of the season.
- 4:16Speaker 2: We've had a bunch at the end here.
- 4:18Speaker 1: And that's what you need this time of year, is
- 4:19Speaker 1: it not. I mean your first couple of runs, sacrifice,
- 4:22Speaker 1: fly ground ball, you get runs without hits. I mean
- 4:26Speaker 1: that stuff adds up. I mean you gotta you get
- 4:28Speaker 1: six runs to win the game. But you scored those
- 4:30Speaker 1: two early runs on a on a fly ball, on
- 4:32Speaker 1: a ground ball.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Yeah, a couple outs that that were productive, and guys
- 4:36Speaker 2: going to the opposite field. Early in the game, I
- 4:37Speaker 2: think five of our first six hits through to the
- 4:39Speaker 2: opposite field, low on the ground, low liners. It was
- 4:42Speaker 2: going to work tonight on ball, wasn't. It was traveling okay,
- 4:46Speaker 2: but wasn't. It wasn't going to be a super offensive night.
- 4:49Speaker 2: And you know, the guy, I thought we did a
- 4:52Speaker 2: solid job early. We just didn't separate, you know, we
- 4:54Speaker 2: didn't put it felt like they wanted to be put
- 4:56Speaker 2: away for a little bit of that game. You know,
- 4:58Speaker 2: it was four nothing. Just couldn't quite you know, put
- 5:01Speaker 2: them away. And they didn't give credit to them. They
- 5:03Speaker 2: didn't walk us once, they didn't hit anybody. I think
- 5:06Speaker 2: they just had one wild pitch that moved two runners.
- 5:08Speaker 2: That was the only Those are the only freebies we
- 5:10Speaker 2: got all night.
- 5:10Speaker 3: And I think that went the one air or two.
- 5:12Speaker 2: But pretty good, you know, pretty good effort by them.
- 5:16Speaker 2: And you know we're going to see probably their best
- 5:19Speaker 2: starting pitcher tomorrow.
- 5:20Speaker 1: How important This is a silly question, but Maddox Julanea
- 5:24Speaker 1: hitting that ball out of here, I mean things were
- 5:26Speaker 1: getting edgy, Yeah, things were getting tight.
- 5:28Speaker 2: And then you have two you know, veteran players there
- 5:31Speaker 2: and Jackson Marshall who gets down two strikes, and it
- 5:34Speaker 2: looked like that guy was going to get the better
- 5:36Speaker 2: of him. And every time you think you might get
- 5:37Speaker 2: the better at Jackson Marshall, he does something special with
- 5:40Speaker 2: two strikes.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Hits that double and you know he needed to hit
- 5:44Speaker 3: it three hundred and eighty feet to get to second base.
- 5:46Speaker 2: He's not the fleet us to foot and then he
- 5:48Speaker 2: didn't have to run too hard when Maddox hit his
- 5:50Speaker 2: That was that was nice to see. Maddox had scuffled offensively,
- 5:53Speaker 2: but he made some really nice defensive plays, didn't didn't
- 5:55Speaker 2: take his bat out into the field with him, and
- 5:58Speaker 2: I liked the way that he played defense. I thought
- 6:00Speaker 2: he was a calming influence on the and then to
- 6:02Speaker 2: hit the homer, it was that was the time for
- 6:04Speaker 2: the captain to do something that he did. So yeah,
- 6:08Speaker 2: I mean overall happy with the win. Just we got
- 6:10Speaker 2: to clean a couple a couple of things up and
- 6:12Speaker 2: play a little bit better tomorrow. And in some ways
- 6:15Speaker 2: it's it's nice. I guess it's nice in some ways,
- 6:17Speaker 2: and that we didn't separate because you're gonna you're gonna
- 6:20Speaker 2: be taking this team seriously, we need to have a
- 6:21Speaker 2: little bit more juice in our dugout. So playing for
- 6:23Speaker 2: first place, playing for regular season championship, there should be uh,
- 6:27Speaker 2: you know, there weren't a ton of people in the stands.
- 6:29Speaker 2: You had to bring the energy yourself to the rest.
- 6:31Speaker 2: People stayed away with the rain and the forecast. But
- 6:34Speaker 2: credit to the meteorologists, they got it right for once.
- 6:36Speaker 2: We talked to our.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Guy last night and he nailed it.
- 6:40Speaker 2: He said, after six pm, you're gonna be fine, So
- 6:42Speaker 2: don't don't change the game.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Right, good good decisions.
- 6:45Speaker 1: So finally, at this time of year, winning games, one
- 6:49Speaker 1: run games, as you mentioned, winning games when you need
- 6:51Speaker 1: everybody to do something, whether it's the bullpen guys, whether
- 6:55Speaker 1: it's the timely hitting. I mean, this is what winning is,
- 6:58Speaker 1: isn't it.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Yeah, little you know, everybody, everybody's got to contribute a bet.
- 7:02Speaker 2: You know, Anthony Belisario looked like a world beater tonight
- 7:04Speaker 2: in the one hole, and cam Riggi hasn't played in boy,
- 7:08Speaker 2: I don't.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Even know ten eleven days, twelve days. He looked like
- 7:12Speaker 3: he didn't miss a beat. You know, he was sensational.
- 7:15Speaker 2: So them back to back, those were only I think
- 7:17Speaker 2: the first two times around the other order those are
- 7:19Speaker 2: the only guys with hits and so. But yeah, and
- 7:23Speaker 2: then Nator makes the catch even though he's had he
- 7:24Speaker 2: had a bad night offensively, he contributes defensively. We need
- 7:28Speaker 2: to get the bottom of the order going. We didn't
- 7:30Speaker 2: produce it all from I think seven six, seven, eight nine,
- 7:35Speaker 2: oh for I believe.
- 7:37Speaker 3: If you are correct.
- 7:38Speaker 1: So yeah, we top four were awesome.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Yeah, bottom five not so much. Yeah.
- 7:42Speaker 2: We need something more from the bottom tomorrow and make
- 7:45Speaker 2: it a little bit easier on ourselves.
- 7:46Speaker 3: All right, coach, appreciate it. Good winning. Appreciate it.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Winning is fun.
- 7:50Speaker 3: You got it. I just figured that out, by the way.
