- 1:50They were great.
- 1:51We were like the two night owls.
- 1:52Everybody else was in bed.
- 1:58So, Vicky.
- 2:00so proud dad moment um my daughter i
- 2:04tell you how cool she is um i
- 2:09tell you how cool she is all the
- 2:10time and i'm a proud dad so i'm
- 2:12gonna say it again uh last night she
- 2:14went off the grid she went camping in
- 2:16the mountains
- 2:18a photo shoot she was there not to
- 2:20just camp and enjoy herself but to go
- 2:22out and take pictures of people wearing
- 2:25their apparel while camping um and i can't
- 2:29wait to see what it comes out like
- 2:33i don't know if i told you guys
- 2:34like the coolest thing that happened um to
- 2:37me when we were out there we were
- 2:39driving down the road to go to dinner
- 2:41one night and my my daughter goes oh
- 2:44my gosh there's my picture
- 2:45And up on a billboard was a picture
- 2:48that she had taken in an advertisement for
- 2:51her company.
- 2:55So yeah, like just the coolest stuff.
- 2:58She is like so happy right now.
- 3:01I can't even express how cool that is
- 3:03to have a daughter that just has found
- 3:06her groove and is so happy.
- 3:09As a parent,
- 3:09there's just no better feeling in the
- 3:12world.
- 3:13No better feeling.
- 3:16Chris Bisterfield is in the house.
- 3:18Scott's going to be on another Realm
- 3:20Thursday, three p.m.
- 3:21Eastern.
- 3:22Yes, I am.
- 3:23We just set that up this morning.
- 3:26So I'll be on Chris's podcast October
- 3:29second.
- 3:36Sean and Oregon breakfast with the
- 3:38Clydesdale.
- 3:39I'll raise my mug to you.
- 3:44So another little tidbit I wanted to share
- 3:48with you guys.
- 3:50CrossFit Games posted this picture today.
- 3:55I don't know if you guys have seen
- 3:59this.
- 4:00The long shorts at the CrossFit Games.
- 4:04I believe that's Pat Barber,
- 4:07but wearing the long shorts.
- 4:11Can I just say my legs are so
- 4:13short that every single pair of my shorts
- 4:17are long shorts.
- 4:20I am like five, ten, five, eleven.
- 4:24And my legs are like.
- 4:28I look like those sausages at the
- 4:31Milwaukee Brewers games that run around
- 4:34the field that have these long,
- 4:36long torsos and these itty bitty legs.
- 4:39That's how my body is made up.
- 4:45So I wear short shorts,
- 4:46and they look like long shorts.
- 4:50Crazy.
- 4:53Because I had those rogue board shorts
- 4:58back in the day,
- 5:00and they were all the way down to
- 5:03the tops of my knees.
- 5:09So, um, so yeah, look at those shorts,
- 5:15man.
- 5:20Neil Maddox.
- 5:22That's so old school.
- 5:27Austin, Molly yellow.
- 5:33But man, I miss these colors.
- 5:36I miss these Parker, these, sorry,
- 5:40saw Lucas Parker in the chat.
- 5:41I miss these colors on the field.
- 5:43They were just the best.
- 5:48So easy to find your athlete and root
- 5:50for your athlete.
- 5:57And then the Lucas Parker, there it is.
- 6:02wearing the old banana hammock uh those
- 6:05are the swimsuits i wore back when i
- 6:07was competitive swimming it was way before
- 6:10the long shorts in that um gosh i
- 6:15can't believe i wore those for like years
- 6:20and felt comfortable in them i i can't
- 6:23even i can't even imagine and we got
- 6:28some dan bailey big old headbands
- 6:32Those weren't the big headbands.
- 6:33The Rich Froning headbands were the...
- 6:35There we go.
- 6:36The Holmberg with the big headband.
- 6:44And then the tall socks.
- 6:47Everybody had to have the coolest tall
- 6:49socks.
- 6:58And Chris Spieler's headphones.
- 7:01Yeah.
- 7:02No earbuds back then.
- 7:04No earbuds at all.
- 7:11Uh, Vicki, I still wear those,
- 7:12those wide headbands.
- 7:14I do too.
- 7:15Like I sweat so much.
- 7:17Um, I do.
- 7:20I wear those to, uh, just,
- 7:23just for out of necessity.
- 7:24If it's a long workout.
- 7:32So anyway,
- 7:32just I'd share that little walk down
- 7:34memory lane.
- 7:39Taking me back to the good old days
- 7:42before my twelve back procedures.
- 7:46When I could wear all that stuff and
- 7:48feel confident and all.
- 7:55So one thing I wanted to talk about
- 7:57is last night I'm sitting at home and
- 8:00I get an alert from ESPN.
- 8:02I'm a big Pirates fan in baseball.
- 8:05And Paul Skeens is the youngest pitcher to
- 8:10finish the season with an ERA lower than
- 8:14two since Dwight Gooden in nineteen eighty
- 8:18five.
- 8:20So we're talking.
- 8:22Forty, fifty years, right?
- 8:25No, forty years.
- 8:27Forty years since anybody had done that.
- 8:32He is such a good pitcher.
- 8:35And he only gives...
- 8:35He gives up less than two runs every
- 8:38nine innings.
- 8:39And the Pirates never win when he pitches
- 8:42because they can't score enough runs to
- 8:44support that.
- 8:46And so it made me think, like,
- 8:48how many...
- 8:51How many athletes are like that where
- 8:55they're so good, so good,
- 8:57but something fails them to prevent them
- 9:02from winning?
- 9:04And I think about, like, Laura Horvat.
- 9:08She has been the one athlete that has
- 9:11been able to go toe-to-toe with Tia Toomey
- 9:16at any event in the CrossFit Games season
- 9:20or Rogue.
- 9:23But she has that one thing.
- 9:25She has that one thing that just prevents
- 9:29her from winning.
- 9:31If that one thing shows up,
- 9:33it's such a bad performance that it takes
- 9:36everything else away.
- 9:41And I was trying to think,
- 9:43are there any other athletes that are so
- 9:46great at everything else,
- 9:49but they just have one thing?
- 9:52One thing.
- 9:57But Joseph,
- 9:57I would argue if she could do strict
- 10:01deficit handstand pushups,
- 10:05just above average,
- 10:06she could compete for a win against Tia.
- 10:11Because they go back and forth in other
- 10:13events.
- 10:15Tia doesn't win everything.
- 10:17The problem is that she's not so bad
- 10:20at something that there's a big point gap
- 10:22at any point where people can take
- 10:24advantage of that.
- 10:32It just made me think about that.
- 10:34Yeah.
- 10:35Pat Vellner running swimming,
- 10:36especially swimming.
- 10:38His swimming is so bad.
- 10:40So bad.
- 10:48You know, it seemed a great, great one.
- 10:50DB and her back squats.
- 10:54DB finished fourth.
- 10:56At the CrossFit Games with a dead last
- 10:59finish in the back squats.
- 11:05That's it.
- 11:08Patrick Vellner,
- 11:09you could say the swimming,
- 11:10you could say the first workout,
- 11:12whatever it is.
- 11:15But I think it's even more extreme for
- 11:17like Laura and DB.
- 11:20I...
- 11:24It just was an interesting thought that
- 11:25came to my head with this because how
- 11:27frustrating does it have to be for a
- 11:29pitcher that's doing everything in his
- 11:32power to be great and his team can't
- 11:37score the minimum amount of runs to
- 11:42support him?
- 11:45And as much as I love Paul Skeens
- 11:47and I try to watch every game that
- 11:49he pitches,
- 11:49I
- 11:51Part of that's because I know he's
- 11:52probably not going to be here soon because
- 11:55the frustration is going to grow and the
- 11:58pirates are going to trade them to get
- 12:00some draft picks and some prospects.
- 12:04And eventually it's,
- 12:09he's going to be gone and he's going
- 12:11to do it for another team.
- 12:13I've watched so many good pitchers leave
- 12:14them, uh, and go to another team.
- 12:17And then,
- 12:18then I half root for them because I,
- 12:21I knew them when Corey Leonard,
- 12:29Barry Sanders.
- 12:33Yeah.
- 12:34I mean, Barry,
- 12:35Barry Sanders did make the playoffs a
- 12:37couple of years.
- 12:38Um,
- 12:40And he had a good team,
- 12:42but not a great team.
- 12:50So anyway, just a thought I had.
- 12:54So I thought I'd talk about that just
- 12:55for a brief moment and see how it
- 12:58related to the CrossFit world.
- 13:04So the other thing I wanted to talk
- 13:06about is I was watching the spin last
- 13:08night.
- 13:10And I know, Jody,
- 13:11you don't know who that is,
- 13:13but it's a show on Wednesday nights.
- 13:16And they were talking about what changes
- 13:18they would make to Tearwaterpalooza.
- 13:23And they were really dogging on the erg
- 13:25chute.
- 13:28And I think it could be exciting with
- 13:31a couple tweaks.
- 13:33On the broadcast,
- 13:34we just couldn't see the green or red
- 13:35light.
- 13:36I think that's huge.
- 13:38Without seeing that, it becomes very,
- 13:40very boring.
- 13:42The other thing is just have a dedicated
- 13:43camera on the target so we can see
- 13:46if they hit or not.
- 13:48And just put it in the lower,
- 13:49like a lower box in the corner.
- 13:52You brought in the big boys to do
- 13:53the production.
- 13:55You probably paid hundreds of thousands of
- 13:57dollars.
- 13:59Why couldn't they have a dedicated camera
- 14:00on the target to let us know if
- 14:03it hit or not?
- 14:07But the biggest thing they wanted to
- 14:09change, and I think is a huge,
- 14:12huge mistake, is...
- 14:19is they think that it needs more teams
- 14:22and their idea was to go away from
- 14:26uh territories or countries or or whatever
- 14:30or continents i think that's a huge
- 14:33mistake i think people are more invested
- 14:37because they're rooting for their region
- 14:40of the world to win
- 14:43If you go to a European semifinal,
- 14:46what makes it so loud and so crazy
- 14:49is all the athletes are from different
- 14:51countries.
- 14:54And so France is yelling for Victor Hoffa
- 14:58and Claudia Gluck.
- 15:00And you have Iceland rooting for the
- 15:05daughters.
- 15:05And you have the UK rooting for Lucy
- 15:08Campbell.
- 15:09And because of that...
- 15:12It gets more exciting and the crowd is
- 15:14much, much more into it.
- 15:19If you take that away,
- 15:21I think you take away the passion for
- 15:24wanting your region to win.
- 15:27And that is significant.
- 15:34If you just do a draft,
- 15:36there's no connection to a team.
- 15:39Now you're back to just rooting for
- 15:41athletes, and that's what the WFP is.
- 15:48And so I think, like,
- 15:50I'm okay with adding a team or two,
- 15:53I think, but it needs to stay regional.
- 16:02And I think the best way to do
- 16:04that would be like North America, Europe,
- 16:11Oceania.
- 16:12You probably have to go like North America
- 16:14or United States, Canada, Europe.
- 16:20I don't know.
- 16:21And the rest of the world.
- 16:23But I think it just has to be...
- 16:33Maybe,
- 16:33but the old rogue red versus black was
- 16:35really entertaining to me.
- 16:36Yeah.
- 16:36But Mark,
- 16:36you're probably a geek like me who watch
- 16:39anything.
- 16:41I think it's just, um,
- 16:46I think you just have to,
- 16:48you have to think outside of our,
- 16:51our box to bring in more people to
- 16:53watch.
- 16:58And here's my other thing about the other
- 17:00teams that we just have to be careful
- 17:02of.
- 17:03And that is that one of the best
- 17:07things about the event is it's only two
- 17:10teams to watch.
- 17:12So it makes it easier to watch.
- 17:14There's no camera missing things going on.
- 17:18It's just two teams.
- 17:20The more teams you put on the floor...
- 17:23I don't want it to become what the
- 17:25CrossFit Games teams are,
- 17:26where there's just mass confusion all over
- 17:29the floor with.
- 17:31Forty athletes all out there doing
- 17:33whatever they do,
- 17:34and nobody really understands what's going
- 17:37on.
- 17:39And so.
- 17:42I think it needs to be kept intimate
- 17:46with people,
- 17:46with other teammates out there cheering,
- 17:48things like that to make it what it
- 17:51is.
- 17:55Lots of suggestions on what it should be.
- 17:58North America, Europe, Middle East,
- 18:00and Africa, Asia, and Oceania.
- 18:06Yeah, that would work,
- 18:07except for you don't have South America in
- 18:09there.
- 18:15Not enough high-end talent in those other
- 18:17demos.
- 18:18We'd know beforehand already who was
- 18:20winning the whole thing.
- 18:25don't know i don't know we talked about
- 18:27this a little bit sunday night um and
- 18:31we named some decent people uh but you're
- 18:36probably right you don't want to dilute it
- 18:38either you're right you don't want to
- 18:39dilute it too much but there's a big
- 18:41list of people who weren't there this year
- 18:43that would have been interesting to see in
- 18:46the mix so maybe it's just a third
- 18:48team and not four
- 18:58Nobody picked North America to win,
- 18:59and if you say you did,
- 19:00you're a liar.
- 19:01I did not pick North America to win.
- 19:02I was wrong.
- 19:07Just for mirrors, U.S., Europe, Canada,
- 19:09Australia to start.
- 19:11But you're leaving out other people who
- 19:15are good,
- 19:16and you just have to remember that.
- 19:22I've said it every year.
- 19:23Guy is awesome at this style of workout.
- 19:27You can love or hate him,
- 19:29and I know there's a lot of people
- 19:30who hate him,
- 19:31but he is really good at this.
- 19:35He has superpowers that other people don't
- 19:38have.
- 19:40His gymnastics are good,
- 19:42and the fact he was able to keep
- 19:43up with Dallin on that power output burpee
- 19:49thing was impressive.
- 19:54I didn't think he was going to hang
- 19:55at all on that.
- 20:02He does.
- 20:03He has superpowers and he has super holes.
- 20:06And it's like a fifty fifty proposition.
- 20:13So.
- 20:20He kept up with him on the burpees
- 20:22but had no juice otherwise.
- 20:24He actually kept up with him on the
- 20:26run and the burpees.
- 20:29It was the bike where he lost it
- 20:31all.
- 20:37You can love or hate Guy.
- 20:38Either way,
- 20:38he wants you to buy him a bike.
- 20:41There it is.
- 20:46So, and on the bike,
- 20:47Dallin is one of the best in the
- 20:49world.
- 20:51Flat out.
- 20:54When he hits the go button, no,
- 20:57but not very many people are keeping up
- 20:58with him.
- 21:06Dallin is not a great runner.
- 21:08Keep keeping up with him is not a
- 21:09great feat.
- 21:10I think Dallin is better on an air
- 21:12runner than he is on like the beach
- 21:15or the dry land for sure.
- 21:18Because his weight will push that
- 21:20treadmill faster.
- 21:25I think that actually helps Dallin in this
- 21:27case.
- 21:34So.
- 21:38Yeah.
- 21:40But anyway, I just don't, I think that,
- 21:43well,
- 21:43I think like a third team would be
- 21:45interesting.
- 21:46And though, as we're talking it out,
- 21:47I think three is probably better than
- 21:49four.
- 21:50I think you, you take away the countries,
- 21:52you take away the passion that people
- 21:54would have to root for their region.
- 21:57So, yeah,
- 21:57that's what I'm going to say about that.
- 22:06And the last thing I'm going to say
- 22:07about the spin cast,
- 22:10Who is John Young who doesn't know what
- 22:13an appetizer is or doesn't eat appetizers?
- 22:16Like, are you kidding me?
- 22:24I'm not a big appetizer guy,
- 22:25but I know what they are.
- 22:27And my wife and daughter order them all
- 22:29the time.
- 22:33It's just crazy.
- 22:44So train all of,
- 22:46he looks like he eats appetizers.
- 22:49I know.
- 22:52Jess, I love a good appetizer.
- 22:55I know.
- 23:04John Young eats at Mickey D's.
- 23:05No appetizers there.
- 23:07Oh, that's a fact.
- 23:13Um,
- 23:14Yeah, so I found that interesting.
- 23:17So anyway,
- 23:20Mark Phillips just won some Oreos.
- 23:23There you go.
- 23:27Speaking of Oreos,
- 23:28have you seen this new show?
- 23:29It's, um, ninety nine to beat.
- 23:31I think it is.
- 23:33it's a whole show where they just do
- 23:35like little games and the, and the,
- 23:39like the one game is taking a piece
- 23:41of spaghetti,
- 23:43getting like five pieces of ZD on the
- 23:47spaghetti and having it all on there.
- 23:50And there's,
- 23:51it starts with a hundred people and the
- 23:54person who finishes last gets booted.
- 23:57So the whole goal is not to win
- 23:59each round.
- 24:00It's just not to finish last.
- 24:03And then the last place person goes home.
- 24:05And then the next guess,
- 24:06the next thing is there's a thousand
- 24:08balloons.
- 24:09Ninety nine of them have a lay in
- 24:11them and you have to pop the balloon
- 24:13and find all the lays.
- 24:15And as long as you're not the last
- 24:17one, you stick around.
- 24:18Last person goes home.
- 24:21It was it was way more fun to
- 24:22watch than I thought it would be.
- 24:25But I love the premise that it's not
- 24:28about winning the match.
- 24:30It's just don't finish last.
- 24:34So, Vicky, it's on Fox.
- 24:39And that's what it is.
- 24:39It's exactly that.
- 24:41It's mindless, unemotional TV.
- 24:44There's no drama.
- 24:45It's just...
- 24:47Now, what they do, it looks like,
- 24:49is they do them where they eliminate one
- 24:51person,
- 24:52and then at the end of the show,
- 24:54they do like a team challenge,
- 24:57and then one team goes home,
- 25:00which is rough because it's just like we
- 25:03talked at the top of the show.
- 25:05One person can cost that whole team their
- 25:12place there.
- 25:16And so the, like the one,
- 25:18the one team challenge was you had buckets
- 25:19of water and you had to hold them
- 25:21on your head and pour from bucket to
- 25:23bucket and fill a tube at the end.
- 25:26And the last team to fill a tube,
- 25:29the whole team went home.
- 25:33It was pretty crazy,
- 25:34but it's the type of TV I have
- 25:38on when I'm doing editing or something of
- 25:41videos,
- 25:42and I don't need to think about the
- 25:44TV show because I'm thinking about what
- 25:48I'm working on in that moment.
- 25:54Vindicate,
- 25:55there's so much dumb shit on TV,
- 25:56I'd rather go for a walk.
- 25:57That's probably the best option,
- 25:59but there are times where I have to
- 26:01edit videos and do things like that,
- 26:03and I don't want something that I have
- 26:04to pay close attention to,
- 26:08and that's when I throw that stuff on.
- 26:12It sounds like Double Dare.
- 26:16Double Dare is fully team.
- 26:18This is mostly individual,
- 26:20and then at one point it becomes team.
- 26:27it's kind of messy and then so in
- 26:29that realm it's kind of like along that
- 26:31line so well i have to blow my
- 26:38nose so excuse me for one i think
- 26:50that like
- 26:52I took all these antibiotics for this
- 26:54pneumonia I had.
- 26:56And then I traveled to Montana and back.
- 26:58And then I just,
- 26:59I was more susceptible to everything going
- 27:01on around me that I caught a stupid
- 27:04summer cold in the process of all of
- 27:09this.
- 27:12But man, I'm just tired.
- 27:15We talked about this yesterday.
- 27:16I'm not going to go down that rabbit
- 27:17hole again.
- 27:18But man,
- 27:18I'm just tired of my sinuses failing on
- 27:21me.
- 27:25So I did notice one thing.
- 27:27I got to pull this back up because
- 27:29it's still up here.
- 27:30The Chris Spieler picture.
- 27:32Yeah, the headphones are crazy.
- 27:36But did you know the little,
- 27:39what was that Apple iPad?
- 27:41Not iPad.
- 27:42Shit, iPod.
- 27:47iPod mini or is that what it was
- 27:49called right here?
- 27:51It's on his belt.
- 27:52It had no screen.
- 27:55Um, it, I was just like,
- 28:01I haven't seen one of those in at
- 28:03least ten years.
- 28:13Um,
- 28:17So I see Nano, iPod Nano,
- 28:26a couple people said.
- 28:30One percent is another one you can put
- 28:32on in the background, Scott,
- 28:33if you haven't seen it.
- 28:34I have seen it.
- 28:34Here's the problem, Vicki.
- 28:36When it comes to trivia, I am very,
- 28:39very competitive.
- 28:41And I've watched the one percent and I
- 28:45love that it's not straight ahead trivia.
- 28:48It's kind of like tricky trivia and I
- 28:51have to like pay attention and play along.
- 28:55That's the problem.
- 28:59So.
- 29:04iPod shuffle.
- 29:06That's it.
- 29:07That's it.
- 29:08Vindicate for the win.
- 29:24Vicky just graduated.
- 29:25What'd you graduate with Vicky?
- 29:37Yeah.
- 29:38Shuffle because you couldn't see what the
- 29:40track to play or choose next.
- 29:42That's right.
- 29:47I have an unopened shuffle in neon green.
- 29:50And that's what Chris Spieler had,
- 29:52a neon green shuffle.
- 29:55Oh my goodness, Vicki,
- 29:56a PhD in functional medicine.
- 29:58That is awesome.
- 30:00Awesome.
- 30:02I was with Wild Health for a while,
- 30:04and I really like the approach of
- 30:06functional medicine.
- 30:07I really do.
- 30:09My only problem with Wild Health was like,
- 30:14To get an appointment,
- 30:16the wait times were so long because the
- 30:19demand was there, but the supply wasn't.
- 30:22And I hope we can get to a
- 30:24point where we get enough functional
- 30:26doctors to meet the supply of the demand
- 30:30of how many people want that.
- 30:36So...
- 30:38I am hoping that you and your cohort,
- 30:41Vicki,
- 30:42are part of that group to move us
- 30:46into the future where we have more options
- 30:48for that.
- 31:01Jess, I never heard of an iPod,
- 31:03just a CD player with headphones.
- 31:06You are you Wisconsin farm girl.
- 31:11I had the two hundred gigabyte iPod.
- 31:15Oh, my gosh.
- 31:16That thing was.
- 31:20I took it everywhere.
- 31:22It had movies on it.
- 31:23It had and I was I used to
- 31:25travel a ton for work.
- 31:27And so it had all of the movies.
- 31:31music on it it had the movies on
- 31:33it so whenever i was traveling i could
- 31:35do whatever i needed to now the movie
- 31:37was on an itty bitty square screen but
- 31:40on an airplane at that point in time
- 31:42in my life it was still fine um
- 31:51vicky ever heard of regenerative
- 31:53regenerative ag i think yeah i'm familiar
- 31:59with what it is but nothing in depth
- 32:07iPod is where podcast comes from.
- 32:10Yeah.
- 32:10Initially you download podcasts onto your
- 32:13iPod and you could listen to podcasts on
- 32:17your iPod.
- 32:19That's it.
- 32:20Yeah.
- 32:22Technology has moved so fast in the last
- 32:25twenty five years.
- 32:26It is unreal where we were at and
- 32:29where we are now.
- 32:38I had a Walkman,
- 32:39then a Discman with stabilization so CDs
- 32:42wouldn't skip, then an MP three player,
- 32:45then an iPod touch.
- 32:47An iPod touch was just an iPhone without
- 32:49cell service.
- 33:00So yeah, and this CD stabilization thing.
- 33:04Yeah, that's a lie.
- 33:07If you hit a bump in your car,
- 33:09it still skipped.
- 33:15Back in my swimming days,
- 33:17I had a Walkman cassette player that I
- 33:20took everywhere.
- 33:21And one day I was walking down the
- 33:22pool and it came unhooked from my
- 33:25sweatpants band and did like a bounce off
- 33:30the deck and into the pool.
- 33:32I was like, there we go.
- 33:33That's over.
- 33:36My parents were so pissed at me.
- 33:44CD stabilization and mega bass.
- 33:49Yeah.
- 33:53Jody,
- 33:53I was a Walkman person all through high
- 33:55school.
- 33:56I took one everywhere I went.
- 33:58But after I lost the really nice Sony
- 34:00one in the pool,
- 34:02everything after that was like off-brand,
- 34:05super cheap, and I just dealt with it.
- 34:20Remember the days of CD players with the
- 34:22corded cassette for your car so you could
- 34:26play the CDs in the car?
- 34:27Yes.
- 34:29Yes.
- 34:29You put the cassette in and somehow the
- 34:33sound went through the wire into the
- 34:35cassette into the tape player and on
- 34:36through your speakers.
- 34:46Wasn't there one where we didn't have to
- 34:47flip the cassette?
- 34:48That was high-end.
- 34:49Yeah, there... Yeah.
- 34:52Yeah,
- 34:52it had a button on it you'd hit,
- 34:54and it would just flip to the other
- 34:55side of the cassette and start spinning it
- 34:57in the opposite direction.
- 35:00Man, you guys...
- 35:13my first truck didn't have a radio so
- 35:15i took my boom box with the removable
- 35:17speakers out of my room and kept it
- 35:19there until i could get a head unit
- 35:22i ran through a ton of d batteries
- 35:26yes vicky we are all old they don't
- 35:37jenny they don't know they don't know how
- 35:39much we had to work just to listen
- 35:41to some music
- 35:43I mean, I was a DJ,
- 35:46a wedding DJ during the cassette era.
- 35:49Like that was work.
- 35:50Finding the song on the cassette,
- 35:53setting it up to start right at the
- 35:54right time,
- 35:55putting it in and then cross fading it
- 35:57over.
- 35:59And you had to do it before the
- 36:00other song was over.
- 36:08It's crazy.
- 36:12The, whoops, the Walkman,
- 36:14the pain of the Walkman chewing your
- 36:16cassette.
- 36:16Oh, that was the worst.
- 36:20All this Walkman talk reveals Scott's
- 36:22demo.
- 36:23Yep.
- 36:36Jess, it was a nightmare.
- 36:38Um, I would,
- 36:40I would bring my cousin along with me
- 36:43who was much younger than I was.
- 36:45And I made it his job just to
- 36:47find the song.
- 36:51So I could take requests,
- 36:52talk to the people,
- 36:53do the things I needed to do.
- 36:55And I,
- 36:56and his whole job and I'd pay him
- 36:57like fifty bucks and he would sit there
- 36:59and just find songs all night long.
- 37:08So, yeah, fun stuff.
- 37:12The last thing I wanted to talk about
- 37:13today, not to get off the Walkman talk,
- 37:16but the other thing that happened last
- 37:18night on the spin,
- 37:20and it's something I don't understand,
- 37:24and that is that
- 37:29We have this group of people in the
- 37:31fitness space that say that they're
- 37:34professional athletes.
- 37:36We have another group that say you're not
- 37:38professional because of X, Y, and Z.
- 37:42My question is, why does it matter?
- 37:45Why does it matter what we call these
- 37:46people?
- 37:48Like,
- 37:51If you want to call yourself professional,
- 37:53call yourself professional.
- 37:54I was on ESPN one night,
- 37:57and there was professional cornhole.
- 38:05If they want to call themselves
- 38:06professional, go to town, buddy.
- 38:10I don't really care.
- 38:11And I know the prize purse for cornhole
- 38:13cannot be anywhere near what the prize
- 38:15purse is for the CrossFit Games.
- 38:18So...
- 38:20They want to call themselves professional.
- 38:22It's no skin off of my back.
- 38:25I don't understand the infatuation with
- 38:28calling one thing professional or not.
- 38:34It just doesn't make any sense to me.
- 38:37And I'd love if someone has a take
- 38:40on this that makes sense to tell me
- 38:43why everybody is so consumed with this
- 38:47definition.
- 38:59Um, because it just doesn't matter.
- 39:02It just doesn't matter to me.
- 39:03I, I have no,
- 39:06I have no qualms with the athletes calling
- 39:10themselves professional.
- 39:11If they earn some prize money,
- 39:12whether it be three dollars or three
- 39:14hundred thousand dollars,
- 39:16it doesn't matter to me.
- 39:17They made money doing a sport.
- 39:19Call yourself professional.
- 39:21I am cool with that.
- 39:26Corey Leonard,
- 39:27I saw a professional tag one day on
- 39:29ESPN.
- 39:30I know there's all kinds of crazy stuff
- 39:32out there that they say they're
- 39:34professional with.
- 39:37I agree.
- 39:38I think it started with so many people
- 39:39claiming we need to professionalize the
- 39:41sport.
- 39:43Well, I think that's a different thing.
- 39:46I think that is like in a business
- 39:48sense, and CrossFit is a business,
- 39:51you should do things in a way that
- 39:53are professional.
- 39:57And I think they're actually getting there
- 39:58right now.
- 40:04But for many, many years, they were not.
- 40:11And so I think it's okay to want
- 40:18the organizer of whatever it is you're
- 40:20doing
- 40:21whether you call it a sport or not,
- 40:24to be professional in setting it up.
- 40:29Now,
- 40:29that is a different connotation of
- 40:31professional than I am a professional
- 40:34athlete.
- 40:41Professional is engaged in a specified
- 40:44activity as one's main paid occupation
- 40:47rather than a pastime.
- 40:51These athletes at the CrossFit Games are
- 40:53not doing this for a pastime.
- 40:59But again,
- 41:01it doesn't matter to me if they want
- 41:02to call themselves professional athletes.
- 41:05And when you say professionalize the
- 41:06sport, that is very different.
- 41:08That is, hey, can we be more organized?
- 41:10Can we set things up for success?
- 41:13Can we be better than we were before?
- 41:16Can we learn from our mistakes?
- 41:18Those things.
- 41:34Maybe the difference between pro and
- 41:36amateur lies in motivation.
- 41:37Pros do X primarily for financial gains.
- 41:40Amateurs balance X and other life
- 41:42obligations.
- 41:43Again, it doesn't really matter to me,
- 41:48though the label itself.
- 41:52I don't think it changes what we do
- 41:55or why the athletes do what they do.
- 42:00And to argue over that just seems to
- 42:03get us nowhere.
- 42:09I get paid to DJ on the side.
- 42:11Am I a professional DJ?
- 42:12I would say so.
- 42:15When I was a wedding DJ,
- 42:16I'd had other jobs.
- 42:18That was just my weekend gig.
- 42:20And I got paid really well to do
- 42:22it.
- 42:22So I would say, yeah,
- 42:24I was a professional.
- 42:36And even more frustrating part of this
- 42:38discussion are people claiming that an
- 42:40athlete isn't professional unless they're
- 42:42on a big salary apart from prize money,
- 42:44sponsorship money.
- 42:45What I know we're like,
- 42:47we're getting so far down into the minutia
- 42:50of what this is and it,
- 42:52it doesn't even matter.
- 42:53It's just a label.
- 42:55It doesn't change what they're doing on or
- 42:57off the floor and how they're training.
- 43:04Jenny, I'm a professional mom.
- 43:08Oh, wait, I don't get paid for that.
- 43:11You get paid in hugs and love.
- 43:15That's what my daughter would say.
- 43:24Sean in Oregon, labels matter.
- 43:26Young people and children look up to
- 43:27professionals who are amplified by media.
- 43:29Media doesn't pay much attention to
- 43:31amateurs.
- 43:33I agree,
- 43:34but I don't think the label matters.
- 43:36If the media are pumping up these
- 43:38athletes,
- 43:39and then people will look up to those
- 43:41athletes.
- 43:42They want to be what those athletes are,
- 43:45whether we call them professionals or not.
- 43:48We are treating them as such because this
- 43:52media space has gotten so big,
- 43:54everybody's talking about these people.
- 44:00Our actions are saying more than the
- 44:02words.
- 44:04If we're talking about Tia Toomey and
- 44:06we're talking about Jason Hopper and we're
- 44:08talking about all the way down to Lydia
- 44:10Fish and all those people,
- 44:12we are pumping up these people in a
- 44:15way that makes it that they are who
- 44:20people look up to because of what we're
- 44:22doing.
- 44:28Spin, I am not a role model.
- 44:40Hey, Jenny,
- 44:41are you weirded out when random people
- 44:43come up to you and say hi at
- 44:44events?
- 44:45I saw you there but was intimidated to
- 44:47go say hi.
- 44:54Jenny is a professional reporter and she
- 44:56professionally reports the news and
- 44:59professionally annoys soft people.
- 45:01I'm professionally amused by her comment
- 45:03section.
- 45:08Jason, not at all.
- 45:09Come say hi anytime.
- 45:10I can vouch for that.
- 45:11I saw Jenny at the games.
- 45:13She was delightful.
- 45:15She was bubbly.
- 45:16She was energetic.
- 45:20Just a delight to meet.
- 45:29And David Reed,
- 45:30they are athletes in a competitive sport.
- 45:32Great athletes,
- 45:32but CrossFit is not a professional sport.
- 45:38Vindicate says, Jenny gives good hugs.
- 45:48And Vicky says,
- 45:49Corey has been on fire all day.
- 45:54Jody,
- 45:55I barged in on Jenny at the games.
- 45:57She was very receptive.
- 46:03Corey, I love the term delightful.
- 46:04I say the dumbest things I know I
- 46:07do.
- 46:07I am like the most socially awkward person
- 46:09in the space.
- 46:11Um, so yeah, delightful jazzed.
- 46:17I was jazzed to meet Jenny.
- 46:19That's and she was with, um,
- 46:26Judy Reed and her daughter.
- 46:29At the time I was there,
- 46:31there were good vibes everywhere.
- 46:37Mark Phillips, according to ChatGPT,
- 46:41a professional sport is one where the
- 46:42athletes make a living from playing,
- 46:44training, or competing,
- 46:46supported by an industry of leagues,
- 46:47sponsors, media, and fans.
- 46:50Well, we definitely have the fans,
- 46:51the media, sponsors,
- 46:54and you kind of have a league.
- 46:57So there you go.
- 47:06Uh,
- 47:06jazz to meet Jenny in the name of
- 47:08my nineties cover band.
- 47:10Oh my gosh.
- 47:10It's a name.
- 47:13Uh,
- 47:16joseph ramirez i said something was the
- 47:18tits the other day and no one understood
- 47:19what i meant that's my life joseph that's
- 47:22my life i always use the catchphrases from
- 47:26the and nobody knows because i'm jazzed
- 47:32babe i'm jazzed uh jody at least you
- 47:39got their attention well on that note um
- 47:44I'm going to call it,
- 47:45get back to work.
- 47:49Um,
- 47:50and you knuckleheads probably need to get
- 47:51back to work as well.
- 47:52If you're not getting back to work,
- 47:54coffee pods and wads has one more add
- 47:56on right freaking now.
- 47:59So head over to coffee pods and wads.
- 48:01Check that out.
- 48:02I'm going to go check that out.
- 48:04Cause I want to see if I'm called,
- 48:06um, I don't know,
- 48:08whatever he called me last time.
- 48:10Um,
- 48:14creating stories that they don't like and
- 48:17um just making shit up i didn't make
- 48:20anything up people i didn't make anything
- 48:22up but anyway i'll go listen to what
- 48:25he has to say this time and we'll
- 48:27probably talk about it tomorrow so with
- 48:29that go check out coffee pods and wads
- 48:31yes that's what smear campaign thank you
- 48:35mark i'll go check that out now so
