Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Who Do You Really Want to Reach Out to?
Transcript
- 0:14Speaker 1: Hang Hudlers. It's me Emily popping in with a little
- 0:20Speaker 1: experiment of sorts. I am trying to think about what
- 0:23Speaker 1: the best way is to connect with everyone during whatever
- 0:28Speaker 1: is going on right now, and so I am trying,
- 0:33Speaker 1: at least for now, five minute Fridays. It's a term
- 0:37Speaker 1: I'm sure you've heard used by other content creators before,
- 0:41Speaker 1: and for me, the purpose of this segment is really
- 0:44Speaker 1: just to check in, to give you a story, to
- 0:48Speaker 1: offer you a thought provoking prompt, to share with you
- 0:52Speaker 1: the content that's really resonated with me this week, whether
- 0:55Speaker 1: that's podcasts or books or things on social media, and
- 1:00Speaker 1: leave you with a quote that really impacted me, to
- 1:04Speaker 1: take you into the weekend. Obviously, you are listening to
- 1:08Speaker 1: me right now, but I want this to be a conversation.
- 1:11Speaker 1: So when you're done listening today, I want to hear
- 1:14Speaker 1: what you think. Is this something that you like, is
- 1:16Speaker 1: this something that's helpful. I don't know what's going on here.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I feel like none of us do, but I'm just
- 1:23Speaker 1: navigating this the best I can. So starting with a story.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Last night, I was sitting on my fire escape listening
- 1:30Speaker 1: to John Legend's Instagram live video. He did, which I
- 1:35Speaker 1: think was titled Together at Home, and he was doing
- 1:38Speaker 1: a little concert with his little family at their home piano,
- 1:42Speaker 1: and I was sitting there enjoying it. Especially oh I
- 1:45Speaker 1: died when he went into tailor as old as time
- 1:47Speaker 1: from beating the beast. I digress. I'm sitting there and
- 1:51Speaker 1: I have this thought, I haven't facetimeed my mom tonight.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Granted like I facetimed her earlier in the day, but wow,
- 1:59Speaker 1: and I realize in that moment, before this whole thing,
- 2:02Speaker 1: I would go days sometimes without talking to my parents,
- 2:09Speaker 1: maybe just because things got busy or work got in
- 2:12Speaker 1: the way. And how special is it that I took notice, Hey,
- 2:17Speaker 1: you haven't connected with your family, Hey, you should check in.
- 2:20Speaker 1: It was a little alarming, but also really special that
- 2:23Speaker 1: I had that realization right that I'm taking this time
- 2:27Speaker 1: to invest in my relationships and check in on my people.
- 2:31Speaker 1: And I'm really thankful for that. And so the prompt
- 2:34Speaker 1: for this five Minute Friday this week is who is
- 2:36Speaker 1: it that you want to reconnect with? I think a
- 2:40Speaker 1: lot of the time, when it comes to relationships that
- 2:42Speaker 1: maybe have fallen off a little bit, it can be
- 2:45Speaker 1: a little bit of a pride thing, or maybe there
- 2:47Speaker 1: was a specific instance or incident that happened that made
- 2:50Speaker 1: you fall back from a certain situation. But right now
- 2:55Speaker 1: is a really great opportunity to reconnect. Maybe that involves
- 2:59Speaker 1: you offering an apology, Maybe that involves you going outside
- 3:03Speaker 1: of your comfort zone, but why not now? So again
- 3:06Speaker 1: the prompt, who is it that you want to take
- 3:10Speaker 1: this time to reconnect with and what is it that
- 3:12Speaker 1: you want to tell them? Maybe writing this down it's
- 3:16Speaker 1: the first step, and you need to let that sink
- 3:18Speaker 1: in a little bit and then you can actually make
- 3:21Speaker 1: that reach out, that connection all right now. My content
- 3:26Speaker 1: picks of the week, my highlights of the week. Headspace.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Headspace is doing some really awesome stuff right now for
- 3:31Speaker 1: both paid and free users. They are offering up a
- 3:35Speaker 1: set of meditations they call these packs on Weathering the Storm.
- 3:38Speaker 1: And one of my favorite components to their Weathering the
- 3:41Speaker 1: Storm pack is this walking at Home set of meditations
- 3:44Speaker 1: and basically Andy Puticolen, the co founder of Headspace, he's
- 3:47Speaker 1: been on the podcast. A link to his episode in
- 3:49Speaker 1: the show notes here. He talks to you through an
- 3:52Speaker 1: exercise where you're just leisurely strolling through your space, and
- 3:56Speaker 1: I think that's a really effective way to get people
- 3:58Speaker 1: who may not feel like they can just sit with
- 4:01Speaker 1: their thoughts and do meditation well quote unquote, to open
- 4:06Speaker 1: up to this idea of working with the mind and
- 4:09Speaker 1: moving while you meditate. And so I really really liked
- 4:13Speaker 1: the walking at Home and I suggest that you take
- 4:15Speaker 1: a listen to it. Another highlight of my week a
- 4:17Speaker 1: song of the week. I cannot stop listening to The
- 4:19Speaker 1: Key by Madison Ryan Ward. My book of the Week
- 4:23Speaker 1: is The One Thing That Is by Gary Keller with
- 4:28Speaker 1: Jay Papasan. I'm probably saying that wrong, and I think
- 4:31Speaker 1: right now more than ever, this idea of doing one
- 4:33Speaker 1: thing at a time when we feel sporadic and you
- 4:37Speaker 1: want to clean your apartment, you want to sit down
- 4:39Speaker 1: at your computer, you want to get work done, you
- 4:41Speaker 1: want to connect with your friends. It feels like we
- 4:43Speaker 1: have nothing but time, but there's still not enough of it.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Focusing in on one specific task at each moment, it
- 4:50Speaker 1: allows us to really give all of our energy to
- 4:52Speaker 1: that one thing and to do that one thing well.
- 4:55Speaker 1: And that's exactly what the author talks about in this book.
- 4:57Speaker 1: So I highly recommend it. And last, the quote of
- 5:01Speaker 1: the Week comes from the class. It's a workout method
- 5:04Speaker 1: created here by Taren Toomey in Tribeca in New York City.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I've been doing one every morning in their live digital studio,
- 5:13Speaker 1: and on Wednesday, I believe I took a class by
- 5:17Speaker 1: my friend Natalie Kuhn, and she said, if there is
- 5:20Speaker 1: anything that you let die in this whole fucking thing,
- 5:25Speaker 1: it's your old story that really impacted me. I don't know.
- 5:29Speaker 1: This feels like a lot of rambling, and I do
- 5:31Speaker 1: think that with time, these five minute fridays will get
- 5:33Speaker 1: a little bit more concise. But reach out to me,
- 5:36Speaker 1: because I'm here in this one bedroom apartment on the
- 5:40Speaker 1: Upper East Side of Manhattan and I'm not going anywhere
- 5:44Speaker 1: at Emily a body at Hurdle Podcast right now. Leave
- 5:48Speaker 1: a review in that high Tunes store. Rate review, subscribe
- 5:53Speaker 1: and shoot me a message. Tag me on Instagram let
- 5:56Speaker 1: me know that you're there too. Another Hurdle card. Catch
