- 0:01Speaker 1: Live on Sky News.
- 0:03Speaker 2: This is Sharry.
- 0:07Speaker 3: Good evening. Tears and relief as the hostages reunite with
- 0:11Speaker 3: their families. With a ceasfire now in place, surely it's
- 0:15Speaker 3: time for the protesters to pack away. Josh Friedenberg calls
- 0:19Speaker 3: for action in an exclusive interview. And while the world
- 0:24Speaker 3: was celebrating Trump last night for delivering peace, the ABC
- 0:28Speaker 3: ran a hit job. Elon Levy will be on the
- 0:31Speaker 3: show to discuss media bias, but first to the heartwarming
- 0:36Speaker 3: reunions of hostages with their loved ones. Moments we feared
- 0:41Speaker 3: would never happen as they were all but lost to
- 0:44Speaker 3: the terror tunnels of Gaza. And you can't see these
- 0:48Speaker 3: joyful embraces enough after all the heartache of the past
- 0:52Speaker 3: two years. These are some of the moments that brought
- 0:56Speaker 3: tears to my eyes. You'll recall this distress footage when
- 1:00Speaker 3: Noah Agamani was cruelly kidnapped on October seven, separated from
- 1:06Speaker 3: her boyfriend Avinatan Or, she yelled out, don't kill me
- 1:11Speaker 3: as she reached for him. Well, she was rescued in
- 1:14Speaker 3: Israel last year, and finally she's now been reunited with
- 1:19Speaker 3: her boyfriend.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Lord Money.
- 1:41Speaker 3: It's so beautiful. But you can also see how emaciated
- 1:45Speaker 3: he is, and he's estimated to have lost around thirty
- 1:48Speaker 3: to forty percent of his body weight. Nimrod Cohen was
- 1:52Speaker 3: kidnapped at nineteen and here he is reuniting with his family,
- 1:58Speaker 3: also looking far too thin, but at least he's home.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Nimrod's mother campaigned so hard for his freedom. Like any mother,
- 2:25Speaker 3: she would do anything to bring her boy home, and
- 2:29Speaker 3: now he's safe in her arms. And here's the moment
- 2:33Speaker 3: of pure ecstasy when hostage Matana Angrest reunites with his family.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Isn't it so hard to watch all of these without
- 3:08Speaker 3: tearing up? And here's father Omri Mran playing with his
- 3:13Speaker 3: little girls, Ronnie and Alma, a moment he's no doubt
- 3:17Speaker 3: dreamt about for two long years while being physically and
- 3:21Speaker 3: mentally tortured, just to think how much he missed out on.
- 3:45Speaker 3: And other dads too had heartwarming and tear jerking reunions
- 3:49Speaker 3: with their children, like el Kana Bohbot with his five
- 3:54Speaker 3: year old son, his wife sobbing as they embraced for
- 3:58Speaker 3: the first time. It's just so beautiful. There's now a
- 4:27Speaker 3: debate in Israel about what to call hostage square, and
- 4:31Speaker 3: the two leading contenders are Freed square or Trump square.
- 4:37Speaker 3: But for twenty four families, the heartache continues. Hermas broke
- 4:41Speaker 3: its agreement under the deal to return the dead bodies
- 4:45Speaker 3: of the fallen hostages. Their families desperately wanted to bring
- 4:50Speaker 3: them home, to give them a proper Jewish burial and
- 4:53Speaker 3: lay them to rest in their homeland of Israel. Trump
- 4:57Speaker 3: made that commitment last night that their bodies do need
- 5:00Speaker 3: to be brought home. And speaking of Trump, well, we
- 5:03Speaker 3: have to speak about his speech last night. It was
- 5:06Speaker 3: triumphant and also hilarious and wild. It was Trump on
- 5:11Speaker 3: a high from all that he'd achieved from bringing the
- 5:14Speaker 3: hostages home, and it was truly a speech to behold.
- 5:19Speaker 3: His morality and the strength of the President and the
- 5:23Speaker 3: United States was on display, and he had some very
- 5:27Speaker 3: clear messages declaring that Israel had won.
- 5:33Speaker 2: So Israel, with our help, has won all that.
- 5:37Speaker 4: They can by force of arms. You've won, I mean
- 5:41Speaker 4: you've won. Now it's time to translate these victories against
- 5:45Speaker 4: terrorists on the battlefield into the ultimate prize of peace
- 5:49Speaker 4: and prosperity for the entire Middle East. It's about time
- 5:53Speaker 4: you were able to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
- 5:59Speaker 3: And he's completely rite. Trump and Nadi Yahoo won this war.
- 6:05Speaker 3: They brought the hostages home with no thanks to the
- 6:09Speaker 3: left wing leaders like Alban Easy Starmer and Macron, whose
- 6:13Speaker 3: so called diplomacy only strengthened the arm of terrorists while
- 6:19Speaker 3: criticizing Israel and continually demanding that it stopped its military campaign,
- 6:25Speaker 3: the very military pressure that led to Harmas releasing the hostages. Now,
- 6:31Speaker 3: Trump's speech, and I know you watched it last night.
- 6:33Speaker 3: It was also unpredictable, off script and completely hilarious. And
- 6:39Speaker 3: here's a couple of moments that had me laughing out loud.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I like going to.
- 6:44Speaker 5: Get the Avraham of course, because people that what Avrahama,
- 6:55Speaker 5: It's so cool, it's so much short of nice, you know,
- 7:01Speaker 5: the Abraham versus the Avraham.
- 7:08Speaker 3: I think we should all now refer to it as
- 7:09Speaker 3: the Avraham Accords. And after that left wing protester and
- 7:15Speaker 3: MP interrupted his speech. Trump said this over.
- 7:33Speaker 1: That was very efficient, so back to Steve Peve.
- 7:48Speaker 3: He also joked about how long the speeches of the
- 7:51Speaker 3: opposition later the speaker and even Neda Yahu were.
- 7:55Speaker 4: As soon as I'm finished, I'm quite late.
- 7:58Speaker 2: You've kept me quite late between opposite leaders and BB's
- 8:02Speaker 2: brilliant but very long speech. I thought I was going
- 8:07Speaker 2: to run up here, make a speech and then head
- 8:09Speaker 2: to Egypt.
- 8:11Speaker 4: It didn't work out, though, and you made a pretty
- 8:13Speaker 4: long one too, sir.
- 8:16Speaker 3: And that speaker really did enjoy his moment of limelight.
- 8:21Speaker 3: And by the way, those comments from Trump were despite
- 8:23Speaker 3: his own speech, far exceeding all of theirs. That I
- 8:27Speaker 3: enjoyed every minute of it. And Trump was awarded the
- 8:31Speaker 3: Israeli Presidential Medal of Honor, richly deserved. Now, the news
- 8:37Speaker 3: moved so fast these days that I want to just
- 8:41Speaker 3: take a moment to reflect the release of the hostages
- 8:45Speaker 3: marks the closing of a chapter that began two long
- 8:49Speaker 3: years ago. Healing can finally begin for the hostages, their families,
- 8:57Speaker 3: Israelis and the diaspora. Now, every year it passover, the
- 9:02Speaker 3: Jewish community tells the story of Jews freed from slavery
- 9:07Speaker 3: in Egypt, and the children sing, let my people go.
- 9:13Speaker 3: It's a timeless reminder of persecution, captivity and the fight
- 9:17Speaker 3: for freedom, and once again that ancient struggle echoes in
- 9:24Speaker 3: our own time. The battle has now been won, with
- 9:29Speaker 3: the joyful reunion of the hostages, but it's not without
- 9:33Speaker 3: loss and pain and suffering. The deal came too late
- 9:38Speaker 3: for many, more than one hundred killed in harmask captivity,
- 9:42Speaker 3: including baby Kafir, his brother Ariel, and their mum Shiri.
- 9:47Speaker 3: We've also lost nearly a one thousand young soldiers and
- 9:52Speaker 3: one thousand, two hundred innocent souls on October seven to
- 9:56Speaker 3: the darkness of hatred and evil, the cruel terrorism that
- 10:01Speaker 3: somehow found support in the West. Now we are all
- 10:06Speaker 3: forever changed because of these past two years. We're bruised, scarred,
- 10:12Speaker 3: yet stronger and more resolute. And today, at last, I
- 10:18Speaker 3: feel we can breathe again, we can exhale. Our people
- 10:22Speaker 3: are free, and the sun shines once more. Now for
- 10:31Speaker 3: more on this topic, I spoke with former Treasurer Josh
- 10:34Speaker 3: Friedenberg in the last hour. Josh, thank you so much
- 10:39Speaker 3: for being here. You've been front and center these past
- 10:43Speaker 3: two years.
- 10:44Speaker 6: How are you.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Feeling today after the release of the remaining living hostages.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Well, Charie, like everyone, I'm feeling an enormous sense of relief.
- 10:54Speaker 1: It's as if a dark cloud has been lifted that
- 10:58Speaker 1: is covered for the last two years years and one
- 11:00Speaker 1: couldn't help but shed a tear of jubilation with the
- 11:04Speaker 1: families being reunited with their loved ones. But there's also
- 11:09Speaker 1: a deep sense of sadness given the level of destruction
- 11:14Speaker 1: and devastation and death that we've seen over the last
- 11:17Speaker 1: two years, and particularly the barbarity of October the seventh itself.
- 11:23Speaker 1: But I can't but help feel hopeful about the future
- 11:27Speaker 1: following the President's speech to the Canesset, but also the
- 11:33Speaker 1: gathering of world leaders in Shamilshek in Egypt that have
- 11:38Speaker 1: signed on to this peace plan. So yes, there is
- 11:41Speaker 1: uncertainty as to what will unfold in the months and
- 11:44Speaker 1: years ahead, but certainly I'm the most hopeful I have
- 11:48Speaker 1: been for some time.
- 11:50Speaker 3: No, it was such a beautiful sight to see all
- 11:53Speaker 3: those loving families. I agree there's a lot of hope today.
- 11:56Speaker 3: You just refer to the peace agreement in Egypt and
- 12:00Speaker 3: message is that this is in our time for peace.
- 12:03Speaker 3: But how great of a challenge will this next phase
- 12:07Speaker 3: be of disarming a mass we know their intent on
- 12:11Speaker 3: destroying Israel and then also finding an independent new governing body.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Well it's a very steep hill to climb, but if
- 12:21Speaker 1: anyone can climb it. I think the President of the
- 12:23Speaker 1: United States can, and he seems to be fully committed
- 12:28Speaker 1: to it, and it's going to define his presidency in
- 12:32Speaker 1: many ways, certainly in terms of the foreign policy results
- 12:36Speaker 1: that he's able to achieve. The hard work, though, begins now,
- 12:40Speaker 1: as you say, disarming a mus which shows no intent
- 12:44Speaker 1: of wanting to do that, at least voluntarily. We must
- 12:48Speaker 1: rebuild Gaza because it is the side of enormous devastation
- 12:54Speaker 1: and people deserve to have a fresh start there. And critically,
- 12:59Speaker 1: you need proper governance and an education system that doesn't
- 13:04Speaker 1: reward terror, that doesn't inside violence, that doesn't pay the slay,
- 13:09Speaker 1: that doesn't teach kids that Israel and Jews are the
- 13:14Speaker 1: enemy basically from the day of their of their early schooling,
- 13:19Speaker 1: the first day of their early schooling, and that's what
- 13:21Speaker 1: we had seen in Gaza up till now. So there
- 13:26Speaker 1: is an opportunity, and I think you know, the president's
- 13:29Speaker 1: got significant runway. He's got another three and a bit
- 13:32Speaker 1: years of his term to run. He's certainly got enormous
- 13:36Speaker 1: leverage over the key Muslim and Arab countries. We know
- 13:41Speaker 1: that Egypt is the second largest recipient of usaid. We
- 13:45Speaker 1: know that Katar looks to the United States for a
- 13:49Speaker 1: security guarantee, particularly after the Israeli attack on HAMAS officials
- 13:56Speaker 1: in Doha, and then of course Turkey is public about
- 14:01Speaker 1: wanting the latest American weapons system. So these countries that
- 14:05Speaker 1: have influence over Hamas have been have been brought to
- 14:11Speaker 1: the table by an American president who's willing to use
- 14:14Speaker 1: that leverage. And of course the president has leverage with Israel,
- 14:17Speaker 1: and Israel has paid a high price by handing over
- 14:22Speaker 1: prisoners two hundred and fifty of whom were facing life
- 14:26Speaker 1: sentences for murder in return for the hostages who had
- 14:29Speaker 1: been brutally treated in the dungeons of Gaza. And that
- 14:33Speaker 1: was an ourd deal, but one that I'm sure every
- 14:36Speaker 1: Prime Minister of Israel would take because the focuses on
- 14:41Speaker 1: the life of those Israeli hostages who are being held
- 14:46Speaker 1: for so long.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Exactly. I also want to ask you about the role
- 14:51Speaker 3: of Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanezi and Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
- 14:56Speaker 3: They claim they played a role in building momentum for
- 15:01Speaker 3: peace by recognizing a Palestinian state. Should they be taking
- 15:06Speaker 3: credit for Trump's peace plan.
- 15:10Speaker 1: It's insulting in the extreme Shari for Australia to be
- 15:14Speaker 1: claiming credit for what has transparred over the last twenty
- 15:17Speaker 1: four hours. Credit is due to the President of the
- 15:20Speaker 1: United States, and it's wrong, it's offensive, that doesn't withstand
- 15:25Speaker 1: a second of scrutiny. And as I've written, I think
- 15:28Speaker 1: Penny Wong should be condemned for taking a victory lap
- 15:31Speaker 1: over Donald Trump's finishing line, the reality, the.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Great line, by the way, great line, and on.
- 15:39Speaker 1: All of the reality shari is from day one, Penny Wong,
- 15:43Speaker 1: after the attack on October the seventh, was publicly calling
- 15:47Speaker 1: for Israel's restraint before Israel had even militarily responded to
- 15:52Speaker 1: that attack, and certainly before the blood of Israeli victims
- 15:57Speaker 1: were even dry. And then from there Australia was supporting
- 16:02Speaker 1: ceasefire resolutions in the UN that didn't even mention Hamas
- 16:06Speaker 1: or didn't even mention the hostages, and certainly did not
- 16:09Speaker 1: support Israel going into those places in Rapah and Gaza
- 16:13Speaker 1: City where the hostages were. And then you had the
- 16:16Speaker 1: International Criminal Court engage in an immoral act of law
- 16:21Speaker 1: fair by putting Israeli democratically elected leaders who had been
- 16:26Speaker 1: attacked on October the seventh on the same pedestal as
- 16:29Speaker 1: the terrorist organization Hamas that had attacked on October the
- 16:33Speaker 1: seventhiert Australia did not speak up and should be condemned
- 16:38Speaker 1: from that. And then, of course, as you referred to,
- 16:41Speaker 1: Australia recognized Palestinian statehood while the hostages were still in
- 16:47Speaker 1: the dungeons of Gaza and while Hammas was still in control,
- 16:52Speaker 1: and that was condemned by the US Secretary of State
- 16:54Speaker 1: Marco Rubio, who said it was being done for domestic
- 16:57Speaker 1: political purposes, which it was, but also that the only
- 17:02Speaker 1: impact of it would be to embolden a muss So
- 17:06Speaker 1: it's just obvious that Australia has not played any meaningful
- 17:13Speaker 1: or positive role in getting to the result that we
- 17:17Speaker 1: saw yesterday. And how for the life of them Australia
- 17:22Speaker 1: could pat itself on the back, or at least the
- 17:24Speaker 1: alven Easy government could pat itself on the back for
- 17:27Speaker 1: being praised by the terrorists of a Musk who threaten
- 17:32Speaker 1: our security while simultaneously being condemned by the US Secretary
- 17:37Speaker 1: of State and the United States, which guarantee our security.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Is really a question that they must be held accountable.
- 17:46Speaker 3: For Josh, just finally, you've been a great leader on
- 17:50Speaker 3: the rise in anti Semitism in Australia. Now that there's
- 17:55Speaker 3: a cease fire, are these weekly pro Palestinian protests with
- 17:59Speaker 3: their hateful aren't still necessary? I mean, what are they
- 18:02Speaker 3: actually protesting?
- 18:05Speaker 1: Well, absolutely, they're not necessary. And it's pretty telling, isn't
- 18:10Speaker 1: it that as a cease fire was put in place
- 18:13Speaker 1: and the hostages were released, that the pro Palestinian protesters
- 18:19Speaker 1: were silent in terms of in terms of welcoming what
- 18:24Speaker 1: was an end to the fighting and an end to
- 18:28Speaker 1: the war. I've said all along Sharhi that these daily
- 18:34Speaker 1: and weekly protests around the country are incubators of hate.
- 18:38Speaker 1: We have seen members of parliament, members of Albanese's government
- 18:46Speaker 1: marching under the banner of the Atollah in Iran. We
- 18:53Speaker 1: have seen people holding up signs saying Zionists are terrorists
- 18:59Speaker 1: due are Nazis, waving the flags of listed terrorist organizations
- 19:05Speaker 1: Amas and Hezbala, saying death to the IDF and from
- 19:09Speaker 1: the river to the sea, these protests are incubators of
- 19:15Speaker 1: hate and they've divided US society, not united our society
- 19:21Speaker 1: and where were those protesters when there was widespread devastation
- 19:25Speaker 1: and destruction and killing in the Sudan, in Yemen, or
- 19:29Speaker 1: indeed in Syria, they were nowhere to be seen and
- 19:33Speaker 1: that exposes the double standards and the hypocrisy of them.
- 19:37Speaker 1: But at the same time, just yesterday we heard from
- 19:41Speaker 1: the Chief Commissioner of Police in Victoria that as a
- 19:45Speaker 1: result of these protests in Melbourne, twenty five thousand police
- 19:50Speaker 1: ships have been required. And in these words and in
- 19:54Speaker 1: his words Shari, if half of those ships could have
- 19:58Speaker 1: been dedicated to fighting crime, we wouldn't see the wave
- 20:01Speaker 1: of crime that we've seen in Melbourne. So I think
- 20:05Speaker 1: any decent minded, well meaning Australian would say, now that
- 20:12Speaker 1: the war seems to be at an end, it's time
- 20:16Speaker 1: that these protests come to an end. And that's in
- 20:20Speaker 1: the interests of social cohesion. But it's also in the
- 20:24Speaker 1: interests of community safety, because on both counts these protests
- 20:30Speaker 1: have undermined what is good and what is proper for Australia.
- 20:35Speaker 1: The only social coasion and community safety.
- 20:39Speaker 3: Really important message there, Josh, thank you so much for
- 20:43Speaker 3: joining us and have costs for your incredible leadership over
- 20:46Speaker 3: the past two years. Appreciate your time.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you.
- 20:52Speaker 3: After the break, Biden tries to take credit for Trump's
- 20:55Speaker 3: peace plan while the ABC smashes Trump on the very
- 20:58Speaker 3: night he delivers. Elon Levy's up after this, On the
- 21:05Speaker 3: day the hostages were freed, CNN's host Christiane amanpau made
- 21:11Speaker 3: these appalling comments.
- 21:13Speaker 6: It's been a terrible, terrible two years for them because
- 21:16Speaker 6: not only are they there, you know, they're probably been
- 21:19Speaker 6: treated better than the average garden, because they are the
- 21:22Speaker 6: pawns and the chips that Hamas had. Now Hamas has
- 21:25Speaker 6: given up all its leverage.
- 21:26Speaker 3: By the way, the ABC missed the mark as well,
- 21:31Speaker 3: running a hit job on Trump on the same night
- 21:33Speaker 3: he signed the peace deal in Egypt. Elon Levy joins
- 21:37Speaker 3: US Now Live from Israel. Elon, what's your view on
- 21:41Speaker 3: this extraordinary media bias?
- 21:44Speaker 7: I mean, Charlie, what a phenomenally stupid thing for Christianamanporta
- 21:48Speaker 7: say that the hostages were treated better than the average garden.
- 21:52Speaker 7: I thought you'd have learned her lesson after Sky News
- 21:54Speaker 7: the other sky News, not yours. Dominic Waghorn said at
- 21:57Speaker 7: the beginning of the war that the hostages were being
- 22:00Speaker 7: held in reasonable conditions.
- 22:02Speaker 1: She should pick up a copy.
- 22:03Speaker 7: Of Eli Sharabi's new memoir which I translated, where he
- 22:06Speaker 7: talks about the maggots on their toothbrushes. She should speak
- 22:10Speaker 7: to the hostages who said they were held underground for
- 22:12Speaker 7: two years, no fresh air, no sunlight. One hostage said
- 22:16Speaker 7: he had to beg on his own wedding anniversary to
- 22:18Speaker 7: be able to shower. We know hostages were being held
- 22:21Speaker 7: without any other Israelis near them, so they're surrounded only
- 22:24Speaker 7: by the mask Jihadis who are threatening to kill them.
- 22:27Speaker 7: Who starved them, especially for the cameras, who forced one
- 22:30Speaker 7: of them to dig his own grave, and then they
- 22:32Speaker 7: fattened them up so that they could be released, Who
- 22:35Speaker 7: executed hostages in cold blood in tunnels underneath Gaza. The
- 22:39Speaker 7: hostages were treated in an appalling and horrific manner. And
- 22:44Speaker 7: I think it's good that she apologized, and I hope
- 22:46Speaker 7: it's a lesson to other journalists not to say anything
- 22:48Speaker 7: so phenomenally stupid.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Well, they're hope, but I doubted. We've also seen Anthony
- 22:54Speaker 3: Blinkin and Joe Biden try to take credit for this deal.
- 22:57Speaker 3: How ludicrous, Yeah.
- 23:00Speaker 7: Frankly embarrassing for the leaders of the UK, Australia, Canada
- 23:04Speaker 7: trying to take credit for ending this war with what
- 23:07Speaker 7: is let's remember and Israeli victory. They did everything they could,
- 23:12Speaker 7: every step of the way to force Israel to end
- 23:15Speaker 7: the war with Hamas still in power and abandoning hostages
- 23:19Speaker 7: inside Gaza. That recognition of a non existent Palestinian state
- 23:23Speaker 7: that empowered and emboldened Hamas at a critical moment. Do
- 23:28Speaker 7: you know why this war ended when it did. It's
- 23:30Speaker 7: because Hamas's state sponsors, Cutter, Turkey and Egypt finally put
- 23:35Speaker 7: their foot down and told Hamas that they had to
- 23:38Speaker 7: accept President Trump's plan to end the war or they
- 23:42Speaker 7: would be alone. As Israel continued with its plans to
- 23:45Speaker 7: conquer Gaza City, they empowered Hamas at just the moment
- 23:49Speaker 7: that the countries that were openly supporting Hamas finally started
- 23:52Speaker 7: putting pressure on it. So I hope there's some introspection
- 23:56Speaker 7: in Canberra, in London, in Ottawa as well as they
- 23:59Speaker 7: think after this war, how do we really help their
- 24:03Speaker 7: ally Israel to protect its security? How do you really
- 24:06Speaker 7: make Hamas implement this deal because this is far from over,
- 24:10Speaker 7: and how do we stop giving terrorists for first incentives
- 24:12Speaker 7: to keep fighting.
- 24:13Speaker 3: M We've just got a minute left a bit. The
- 24:17Speaker 3: challenge of Hamas demilitarizing, which is central to phase two,
- 24:22Speaker 3: is this all but impossible?
- 24:25Speaker 7: Well, phase one is not over because Hamas is refusing
- 24:28Speaker 7: to give back all the hostages of the bodies or
- 24:30Speaker 7: the bodies of the hostages it murdered in captivity. That's
- 24:34Speaker 7: a violation of the deal and it needs to free
- 24:36Speaker 7: them now. But Hamas must be disarmed and it must
- 24:39Speaker 7: be demilitarized. The destruction of Hamas's tunnels, that's an integral
- 24:44Speaker 7: part of the agreement that the whole world has now
- 24:46Speaker 7: signed up to.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Shari As ready as.
- 24:48Speaker 7: A euphoric because the war is over, but we want
