• 2:32
Speaker 2: Welcome to the show. Now, Republican State Senator Eric Tarr,
• 2:36
Speaker 2: how you doing, my friend.
• 2:37
  Speaker 5: I'm doing fantastic.
• 2:38
  Speaker 3: All right.
• 2:38
Speaker 2: First of all, I'm gonna let you do a little
• 2:41
Speaker 2: proud brother stuff and get it out of the way.
• 2:43
Speaker 2: Your brother Travis, head basketball coach Winfield High School, big
• 2:47
Speaker 2: win last night in the tournament over Ripley the General's
• 2:50
Speaker 2: advance to the next round. And I know siblings or siblings,
• 2:53
  Speaker 2: I understand. I got I got a sibling too, I
• 2:56
Speaker 2: completely understand. But I know you're proud of your brother,
• 2:58
Speaker 2: So do the right thing.
• 3:00
Speaker 1: Okay, Hey, hey, you beat me to it.
• 3:01
Speaker 5: I was, I was going there anyway. I was gonna
• 3:03
Speaker 5: lead that off that way. I tell you what. It's Uh,
• 3:06
Speaker 5: they're they're having storybooks season really are and so happy
• 3:09
Speaker 5: for Ty to get out there. That's such a big
• 3:12
Speaker 5: deal to see him out there playing that all the
• 3:15
Speaker 5: friends and family. Winfield was out, huge crowd, the Ripley
• 3:21
Speaker 5: Vikings brought it. I mean it was you know that
• 3:23
Speaker 5: they brought a game to him. It was and most
• 3:26
Speaker 5: of the town again, most of the town. Yeah, absolutely,
• 3:29
Speaker 5: they travel well, they really really do. It was fun.
• 3:31
Speaker 5: It was fun. But uh, the interview they did. W
• 3:33
Speaker 5: S a Z did an interview with him after after
• 3:36
Speaker 5: the game. It was a good little interview and uh,
• 3:38
Speaker 5: Travis just knocked it out of the park that the
• 3:39
Speaker 5: whole team did, the whole town did, the community did. Uh,
• 3:42
  Speaker 5: it's it's a life experience, I would say. Last night.
• 3:46
Speaker 5: And and we got Chapmanville coming up Friday, so I think
• 3:50
Speaker 5: that's gonna be another slug fest as well. And I've
• 3:52
Speaker 5: got a great shot there too. So he coaches well,
• 3:55
  Speaker 5: he's he's he's a natural born leader when you put
• 3:57
Speaker 5: him on a court, and so and it showed when
• 3:59
Speaker 5: he was win in the prep series and it shows
• 4:01
Speaker 5: me he's downt Winfield. So teaching young men to be boys.
• 4:04
Speaker 2: Well, and I know what you meant, all right. So
• 4:07
Speaker 2: Metro News Midday y afterday, we interviewed the young man's parents
• 4:10
Speaker 2: on the show. Yes, they got a chance to talk
• 4:11
Speaker 2: to them on the show yesterday, and uh, what great
• 4:14
Speaker 2: people that they that that they appear to be. It's
• 4:17
Speaker 2: no wonder that that he is such a good young man.
• 4:20
Speaker 2: When we talked to his parents yesterday, the apple didn't
• 4:23
Speaker 2: fall far from the proverbial tree area.
• 4:25
Speaker 5: No, they're great family, they really are. They're they're active
• 4:27
Speaker 5: in the community down there. They're active in out the
• 4:29
Speaker 5: school and through the town. So and having that that
• 4:33
Speaker 5: community service aspect of that family bleeds over into tie
• 4:37
Speaker 5: and and really there's so many families like that on
• 4:40
Speaker 5: that basketball team where basketball is important, but it's not
• 4:45
Speaker 5: their entire life. It's not the most important thing. It's
• 4:47
Speaker 5: it's it's it's really about you know, being being there
• 4:51
Speaker 5: for your fellow man is really a theme down there
• 4:54
Speaker 5: on that team and in that community. So it's this
• 4:57
Speaker 5: strong network down there. It's those people are incredible.
• 5:00
Speaker 2: Well, and these kids from what what your brother has
• 5:03
Speaker 2: told me, these kids have been playing together since they
• 5:06
Speaker 2: were kids. They're kids now, but when they since they
• 5:08
Speaker 2: were little kids. I mean the entire and it's an
• 5:10
Speaker 2: entire community of people from there that have that have
• 5:16
Speaker 2: just geled together. They're a young team. Yeah, the thing
• 5:18
Speaker 2: is that they're your team. Very I think they got
• 5:21
Speaker 2: one senior on the team. Yeah, and he's playing freshman
• 5:24
  Speaker 2: sophomores out there.
• 5:25
  Speaker 6: You know.
• 5:25
Speaker 5: Throughout the game. Uh, they're playing with incredible confidence. The
• 5:28
Speaker 5: confidence on those those kids out there where it's it's
• 5:31
Speaker 5: incredible to me. They'll drop a three point shot from
• 5:35
Speaker 5: forty feet out, go off the rim, and come right
• 5:37
Speaker 5: back and drop another one, you know. So it's it's
• 5:39
Speaker 5: just no no hesitation, and so that that kind of
• 5:43
Speaker 5: confidence is you know, you have to learn that. You
• 5:47
Speaker 5: learn that from family. You learn that from knowing the
• 5:49
Speaker 5: mistakes are okay, you know, so you can go in
• 5:51
Speaker 5: and make a mistake. It doesn't in the world to
• 5:53
Speaker 5: come back and you try again. They exemplify that.
• 5:56
  Speaker 7: It was.
• 5:56
Speaker 2: It was fun to watch, and they've got a tough
• 5:59
Speaker 2: matchup against Appmanville Regional coming up tomorrow. That's gonna be
• 6:03
Speaker 2: a heck of a game. Coach Napper. I've known coach
• 6:05
Speaker 2: Napper for a number of years and he's got he's
• 6:07
Speaker 2: got a great ball team down there.
• 6:09
Speaker 5: They do they do, and that's one in talking to Travis,
• 6:11
Speaker 5: they think they had three losses this season, and the
• 6:14
Speaker 5: one I think he was most upset over coming back
• 6:17
Speaker 5: when he's just coming back to the house and you
• 6:18
Speaker 5: get Travis and we're just talking brother or brother at
• 6:20
Speaker 5: Chattmanville loss was the one that really burned him up
• 6:22
Speaker 5: the most. And so I tell you what, they're coming
• 6:25
Speaker 5: back with some mattitude. It'll it's gonna be a fun game.
• 6:27
Speaker 2: It should be. It's just been a great tournament. I mean,
• 6:30
Speaker 2: you know, we're only in into the third day and
• 6:33
Speaker 2: of course we're going to have we got local teams
• 6:35
Speaker 2: in it, Riverside and we'll talk about this a little
• 6:38
Speaker 2: bit later on Riverside making their first appearance in the
• 6:41
Speaker 2: tournament since two thousand and two. So that's a great story.
• 6:45
Speaker 2: G W just had been playing lights out all season.
• 6:48
Speaker 2: They're the top seed in quiet A. They play later
• 6:50
Speaker 2: today and so it's just been a great I love
• 6:53
Speaker 2: the State Tournament. I mean I really really do. My
• 6:55
Speaker 2: logan Wildcats fell last night, you know, they got they
• 6:58
Speaker 2: got beat by Wyoming East, a very very good team.
• 7:01
  Speaker 8: Uh.
• 7:01
Speaker 2: But overall just just from just just some great games.
• 7:04
  Speaker 3: You know.
• 7:04
Speaker 5: And what impressed me around that game I got I
• 7:06
Speaker 5: was there for that game as well, for the second
• 7:07
Speaker 5: half of it. The sportsmanship. You know, when you're you're
• 7:10
Speaker 5: sitting sitting over in a corner, and so you had
• 7:13
Speaker 5: a little bit from each team around you everywhere, and
• 7:15
Speaker 5: which is which is happened state terms, because you kind
• 7:17
Speaker 5: of move around a lot in the civic center, which
• 7:18
Speaker 5: is a great thing to be able to do. But
• 7:21
Speaker 5: the parents and the families that were their friends and
• 7:23
Speaker 5: all those from everybody knows each other from each community.
• 7:26
Speaker 5: I mean you see them coming over and saying, Hi,
• 7:27
Speaker 5: I haven't seen you in a while, and you hear
• 7:28
Speaker 5: these conversations happening, people chit chatting, and it's fun. It's
• 7:32
Speaker 5: it's kind of almost a big family re union of
• 7:33
Speaker 5: these state ternments when you pull West Virginia together.
• 7:35
Speaker 2: Well, and what's changed since back in the days when
• 7:38
Speaker 2: you and I were in school was some many of
• 7:40
Speaker 2: these kids. There's a lot more camps available now, there's
• 7:43
Speaker 2: a lot more travel, ball and things like that. So
• 7:45
Speaker 2: and the internet, you know everybody's friends or whatever you
• 7:48
Speaker 2: know on on social media, So it's not it's not
• 7:51
Speaker 2: like you were going to a foreign land, you know.
• 7:53
Speaker 2: I mean, like you said, with these rivalries and basketball
• 7:56
Speaker 2: and it said to West Virginia, I mean, everybody knows everybody.
• 7:58
Speaker 5: That's exactly. You know, you're going to out there and
• 8:00
Speaker 5: you have a competition among friends and so that the
• 8:02
Speaker 5: sportsmanship is really good, and you know, the you can
• 8:05
Speaker 5: go to any kind of game. When I was growing up,
• 8:07
Speaker 5: I remember parents and maybe they do still get maybe
• 8:09
Speaker 5: one of the little league sides of things I think
• 8:11
Speaker 5: may still happens. Parents are really getting there and get
• 8:13
Speaker 5: vicious sometimes and you know in sports more so than
• 8:15
Speaker 5: the kids would, and so you'd have parents misbehaving more
• 8:19
Speaker 5: than kids. But I tell you what in this one,
• 8:22
Speaker 5: you know, it's you get all these people together there
• 8:25
Speaker 5: and then for hours throughout there, it's game after game
• 8:28
Speaker 5: all day long, and it's really I mean it's just
• 8:30
Speaker 5: the sportsmanship side of and the encouragement of the teams.
• 8:34
Speaker 5: But then also carry your banner. I mean, it's it's
• 8:36
Speaker 5: fun prep. The preps that are the pep sections on
• 8:38
Speaker 5: the ends, the students going how loud they getting stuff too,
• 8:42
Speaker 5: and the competitiveness is there.
• 8:44
Speaker 2: But one of the things I think is, and I
• 8:47
Speaker 2: promise we're not going to talk about sports because there
• 8:49
Speaker 2: is that building down the street that you just came,
• 8:51
Speaker 2: you know from. I do want to talk about that,
• 8:52
Speaker 2: but you may just want to talk about sports.
• 8:54
Speaker 5: I don't know, you know, you know me, I'm gamed
• 8:56
  Speaker 5: for anything.
• 8:57
Speaker 2: But I did want to say about the Riverside. You know, again,
• 9:00
Speaker 2: the Warriors making their first appearance in state tournaments in
• 9:03
Speaker 2: two thousand and two, and they had some fundraisers there
• 9:06
Speaker 2: in the community. Pretty Much any student that wants to go,
• 9:08
Speaker 2: We did a story about it. Any student that wants
• 9:11
Speaker 2: to go to the game goes for free because the
• 9:13
Speaker 2: community got together and bought bought tickets for any pretty
• 9:16
Speaker 2: Much any student that wants to go. Price is not
• 9:18
  Speaker 2: an issue.
• 9:19
Speaker 1: They're going to the game, you know.
• 9:20
  Speaker 5: And that's to me, that's something I've had a little
• 9:23
Speaker 5: bit of a beef with. I guess with high school sports,
• 9:25
Speaker 5: any student should be able to go to a game
• 9:27
Speaker 5: for free. Why were we charging our kids to go
• 9:29
Speaker 5: to do extracurricular activities after school for this? I mean,
• 9:31
Speaker 5: parents are going to show up, uncles, aunts, nephews there,
• 9:34
Speaker 5: you know, brothers, they're all going to show up. So
• 9:37
Speaker 5: why are we charging our kids to go watch these sports?
• 9:39
  Speaker 5: So that's a anyway, that's another thing.
• 9:42
Speaker 2: That'll be that'll be on your on your on your
• 9:44
Speaker 2: plate for next year. Man, there you go, all right,
• 9:45
Speaker 2: all right, So let's get to the session. It's it's over,
• 9:49
Speaker 2: thankfully in some people's eyes. Overall we'll break it down
• 9:53
Speaker 2: a little bit more, but overall, your.
• 9:55
Speaker 5: Take on the session overall, most disappointing session I've I've
• 9:59
Speaker 5: had to participate in so twenty fifteen when I came
• 10:01
Speaker 5: up and start volunteering up there, that would be my consensus,
• 10:04
Speaker 5: And I think it had to do with a lot
• 10:05
Speaker 5: of things. One is that for the past two years,
• 10:08
Speaker 5: the Republican Senate majority has not had a cohesive agenda
• 10:11
Speaker 5: that we go in and say, Okay, this is where
• 10:14
Speaker 5: we know we're going to be and we're going to
• 10:15
Speaker 5: wrap a team around and get this done. It just
• 10:17
Speaker 5: didn't happen this session, didn't happen last session, not so
• 10:20
Speaker 5: much as this is the budget we're going to have
• 10:23
Speaker 5: and we work from there and work back. So whereas
• 10:26
Speaker 5: every year prior to that, these past two years the
• 10:30
Speaker 5: Republicans came in with the cohesive agenda to go in
• 10:33
Speaker 5: and move the entire state forward. It was it was
• 10:35
Speaker 5: about what do we do for West Virginia. And so
• 10:39
Speaker 5: this session, without having that level of leadership, it becomes
• 10:43
Speaker 5: kind of every man for himself or one for her self.
• 10:45
Speaker 5: A case may be going through how to move legislation through,
• 10:51
Speaker 5: and the majority of bills that are moving through when
• 10:55
Speaker 5: you look at some of the committees we have in things,
• 10:58
Speaker 5: instead of the best eyea winning, it's about who's on
• 11:01
Speaker 5: the bill, and so you have this back and forth
• 11:04
Speaker 5: where it's more political than policy oriented. And I'm a
• 11:07
Speaker 5: policy guy, you know, it's just it's the best idea
• 11:10
Speaker 5: should win. I don't care who it comes from, don't
• 11:11
Speaker 5: care where it comes from. If it's a good idea
• 11:13
Speaker 5: that moves Westernior forward, that's what should be running and
• 11:16
Speaker 5: we should have a plan to make it successful. And
• 11:19
Speaker 5: that's that's not happening. So that that's frustrating to me.
• 11:21
  Speaker 5: So that's when I when I say most disappointing, I
• 11:22
Speaker 5: would say that's why this point. So we got a
• 11:25
Speaker 5: mediocre not a harmful, but we got a mediocre session
• 11:29
Speaker 5: and West Virginia can't afford for us to be mediocre.
• 11:32
Speaker 2: Up there is the problem in European olymp A origin
• 11:35
Speaker 2: your mouth again, we're talking to sunday Erit Tark. Is
• 11:37
Speaker 2: it the leadership issue in your opinion? It's absolutely leadership issue? Yeah,
• 11:40
Speaker 2: it absolutely leaders leadership issue.
• 11:42
  Speaker 5: So it's it's about and I also say that it's
• 11:46
Speaker 5: it's a tough bunch to lead where the senatece fractured
• 11:50
Speaker 5: several ways and you don't have one clear group that's
• 11:55
Speaker 5: that's in that clear majority all the time within the
• 11:57
Speaker 5: Republican leadership of the Senate side of East. It's a
• 12:01
Speaker 5: difficult bunch to lead. But it's it's lacking a firm
• 12:06
Speaker 5: hand and somebody who will be steadfast and be a
• 12:09
Speaker 5: true north. And so hopefully we get back to that
• 12:14
Speaker 5: by next session. I'm hoping. So what we'll see. But
• 12:17
Speaker 5: and it showed, you know, we went back. I think
• 12:19
Speaker 5: the biggest thing that showed really on something heading back
• 12:23
Speaker 5: toward that direction at some point is when we did
• 12:26
Speaker 5: Rayley's Law, try to mend that in having going back
• 12:30
Speaker 5: and overruling the rule of a chair on germanus, I
• 12:33
Speaker 5: could I talked to senators who had served there for
• 12:35
Speaker 5: over twenty years ago. It's just never seen that. Now
• 12:38
Speaker 5: the ruling of the chair has been challenged, it has
• 12:41
Speaker 5: never been beat that that we could find. So and
• 12:45
Speaker 5: when you went in, there's eighteen votes that said, all right,
• 12:48
Speaker 5: then if the if the Chair is not going to
• 12:51
Speaker 5: do the right thing, than we are. And so finally
• 12:54
Speaker 5: you start getting something that's policy oriented over the politics.
• 12:57
Speaker 5: And that's what that that's what that shows. So that
• 12:59
Speaker 5: to me, that's a light at the end of the tunnel.
• 13:01
Speaker 5: Maybe we go, okay, we got we've got some hope here.
• 13:04
Speaker 2: Okay, so you brought up Rayley's law. Let's switch it
• 13:08
Speaker 2: over to the down the hall over and the final
• 13:12
Speaker 2: hour forty five minutes or so. I know you were
• 13:14
Speaker 2: busy at that time, but I also know that you
• 13:16
Speaker 2: were keeping up with it.
• 13:17
Speaker 5: That was something it was, it was you know, as
• 13:19
Speaker 5: I was, there was a bunch of us in the
• 13:21
Speaker 5: Senate when they were debating that over in the House.
• 13:25
Speaker 5: Everybody had their or we have surfaces we operate off
• 13:28
Speaker 5: of on the on our computers for all the chamber
• 13:32
Speaker 5: automation system and so usually we'll have this chamber automation
• 13:36
Speaker 5: system which shows you where the bills are currently. When
• 13:37
Speaker 5: you're discussing on these bills, and then you'll have the
• 13:39
Speaker 5: legislative website up and has all the video stream running it,
• 13:43
Speaker 5: you could hear like ten, fifteen, twenty little computer voices everywhere,
• 13:47
Speaker 5: and it was all the House debate. So as we're
• 13:50
Speaker 5: all in there having discussion, you can hear the house
• 13:53
Speaker 5: and so that's we were very tuned into it. I
• 13:57
Speaker 5: think it's disappointing that the House didn't get that moved
• 14:00
Speaker 5: on through once it was sent back over And I
• 14:02
Speaker 5: have to give Amy Grady and Ryan Weld great props
• 14:07
Speaker 5: on this. You know they Originally what had happened is
• 14:12
Speaker 5: Senator Grady had found a bill to amend the language
• 14:16
Speaker 5: that was in Rayley's Law into a child welfare section
• 14:21
Speaker 5: of code. So that the politics on that is is
• 14:23
Speaker 5: that the homeschooling population has kind of been taken this
• 14:26
Speaker 5: as a jab at them, but that's not what it is.
• 14:28
Speaker 5: But one of the reasons I think they have taken
• 14:31
Speaker 5: it as a jab at them is that it's in
• 14:32
Speaker 5: the homeschooling section of codes where it's been trying to
• 14:34
Speaker 5: put in. So, you know, Siner Grady and we were
• 14:38
Speaker 5: up in her office and talking about it, and it's
• 14:41
Speaker 5: it's really not that it's a child welfare issue. And
• 14:44
Speaker 5: so she had amended that language into a child wealth
• 14:49
Speaker 5: welfare section Code instead of into the home schooling section
• 14:52
Speaker 5: of Code. Well that gives the homeschool or some air
• 14:54
Speaker 5: cover on this, but the bills she amended it into
• 14:57
Speaker 5: the title or the actual just it really you didn't
• 15:03
Speaker 5: know that's what it was going to be when you
• 15:04
Speaker 5: looked at it. And then it was going into Health Committee.
• 15:06
Speaker 5: Health Committee, we had the votes, we had the sponsors
• 15:08
Speaker 5: going in there, Denise Morrissey and somebody from homeschooling group
• 15:11
Speaker 5: shows up and sets in the gallery and sponsors fell
• 15:14
Speaker 5: off that bill like crazy, and they didn't run through
• 15:16
Speaker 5: Health The first lady Denise Morrison, absolutely yes, so that
• 15:21
Speaker 5: that version of the bill that would have been in
• 15:25
Speaker 5: child Welfare section of Code then didn't happen. So at
• 15:29
Speaker 5: that point we were okay, you know what, we have
• 15:32
Speaker 5: hope for this thing to get it through. Let's go
• 15:35
Speaker 5: back and see what's left. And we had discussions about
• 15:40
Speaker 5: what bills were left, house bills that you could potentially
• 15:43
Speaker 5: amend that into, and the closest one was that repeal bill.
• 15:46
Speaker 5: And so then Senator Grady and Senator Weld really really
• 15:50
Speaker 5: went work to Senate, got sixteen sponsors on that bill
• 15:52
Speaker 5: or that amendment to put that over into that repeal section.
• 15:56
Speaker 5: And then we knew it was going to be a
• 15:57
Speaker 5: battle on GERMAINEUS. That's what because it was as close
• 16:01
Speaker 5: one way or the other, parliamentarian, I mean, when we
• 16:03
Speaker 5: were up at the desk and everybody's debating it at
• 16:06
Speaker 5: the podium, it's it was close. It's like it could be,
• 16:10
Speaker 5: couldn't be, could be, couldn't be, and back and forth.
• 16:13
Speaker 5: And so that's where the fight took off, is right
• 16:17
Speaker 5: there at that podium. So we went back. We were
• 16:19
  Speaker 5: ready to dig.
• 16:20

Speaker 2: tar Is here. I don't want to go Eric all
• 19:09
Speaker 2: tmz here, but let's talk about relationships in a legislature.
• 19:14
Speaker 2: Is it as broken or maybe broken as a strong word,
• 19:18
Speaker 2: maybe as badly bent as it appears to be at times?
• 19:21
Speaker 5: Yes, it absolutely is.
• 19:23
Speaker 1: I tell you that.
• 19:25
Speaker 5: The fuel for productivity under that dome is trust. It's
• 19:32
Speaker 5: when you've got a group of people who can trust
• 19:34
Speaker 5: the motives and the word of individuals that you're working with,
• 19:38
Speaker 5: you can get stuff done. And the problem right up
• 19:41
Speaker 5: there now is that you know it's there's no trust.
• 19:45
Speaker 5: There's not you even if if we're in caucus, there's
• 19:49
Speaker 5: things you don't say because you know it's going out
• 19:50
Speaker 5: of a text message as fast as you can say it.
• 19:53
Speaker 5: So when you have that kind of level of broken trust,
• 19:56
Speaker 5: then that breaks that process.
• 19:58
Speaker 2: One bill specifically that was discussed a lot was Everify.
• 20:05
Speaker 2: Get explain your stance on e verify because there were
• 20:10
Speaker 2: a lot of Republicans that were that were pushing it,
• 20:13
Speaker 2: but those that tend to be business owners like yourself
• 20:17
  Speaker 2: were not. Explain.
• 20:19
Speaker 5: For anybody who ever signed the front side of a paycheck,
• 20:21
Speaker 5: they knew how stupid this was. For those who have
• 20:25
Speaker 5: never signed the front side of a paycheck, it was
• 20:26
Speaker 5: all about the politics of it because they were working
• 20:29
Speaker 5: off of a poll and I only I had never
• 20:30
Speaker 5: got to see the polling question. But supposedly there was
• 20:35
Speaker 5: this polling question that said that ninety eight percent of
• 20:37
Speaker 5: West Virginia's in favor of you verify.
• 20:39
Speaker 2: And explain what everify?
• 20:40
Speaker 5: So say, e verify is an effort that it's you know,
• 20:44
Speaker 5: we use it in our businesses. So what it is
• 20:46
Speaker 5: is that if you have somebody who's coming in, you're
• 20:48
Speaker 5: going you're going to potentially hire them. You can register
• 20:52
Speaker 5: in this federal website. It's a voluntary website. It was
• 20:55
Speaker 5: created by Bill Clinton back in nineteen ninety six, is
• 20:57
Speaker 5: under his administration, it has been voluntary ever since at
• 21:00
Speaker 5: the federal level that you can go in and put
• 21:03
Speaker 5: somebody's name and see if they're legal to work in
• 21:05
Speaker 5: the United States, which is one of the tools we
• 21:09
Speaker 5: have to do that as employers. There's a bunch. So
• 21:13
Speaker 5: when you become a fairly more sophisticated than most beginning
• 21:17
Speaker 5: businesses are, it becomes a good tool to have when
• 21:23
Speaker 5: when your expertise is making donuts or making cupcakes, or
• 21:27
Speaker 5: making apple pies or fixing cars, you're not an HR person.
• 21:32
Speaker 5: It is not the thing for you to have in
• 21:33
Speaker 5: your business. So there's because there's so many other ways
• 21:36
Speaker 5: that you can go through to verify some legal to work.
• 21:40
Speaker 5: So Everify legislation was born out of a national effort
• 21:47
Speaker 5: around the rhetoric of illegal immigration. And I'm as strong
• 21:52
Speaker 5: a proponent as anybody you'll find is having illegal workforce
• 21:56
Speaker 5: as somebody who's here legally in our country and legal
• 21:58
Speaker 5: to work, been doing business for nearly thirty years now,
• 22:02
Speaker 5: and we've never had anybody in our business that is
• 22:05
Speaker 5: not legal to work. So this bill would have placed
• 22:11
Speaker 5: in jeopardy those type of businesses that are doing it right.
• 22:15
  Speaker 5: It's like it's like putting up a gun free z
• 22:16
Speaker 5: own thing, you know. So the people that are doing
• 22:19
Speaker 5: everything legally, those aren't the ones you worried about. It's
• 22:21
Speaker 5: the ones who have been side skirting everything that you're
• 22:24
Speaker 5: worried about So this bill would have put businesses in
• 22:26
Speaker 5: West Virginia's harm's way by putting a new regulatory mandate
• 22:30
Speaker 5: that was that was characterized as an effort toward illegal immigration.
• 22:36
Speaker 5: But the reality is the people that are hiring the
• 22:37
Speaker 5: people that don't work legally or paying cash, they're not
• 22:39
Speaker 5: going through any kind of system. And so all this
• 22:42
Speaker 5: did is put another regulatory burden on the businesses of
• 22:45
Speaker 5: West Virginia and placed them at risk because it took
• 22:47
Speaker 5: them all the way on a paperwork just only if
• 22:50
Speaker 5: your paperwork wasn't right in the business to losing your
• 22:52
Speaker 5: business license. Think about the people who mortgage their homes
• 22:55
Speaker 5: and everything else they own and probably their kid's future
• 22:59
Speaker 5: on getting a business are in West Virginia and that
• 23:02
Speaker 5: bill that came out was going to potentially rip that
• 23:04
Speaker 5: away from them on.
• 23:06
Speaker 2: A paperwork era like a clerical area.
• 23:08
Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, so it was. It was absurd. And
• 23:10
Speaker 5: the people who are pushing up the hardest Senator Rucker
• 23:12
Speaker 5: never signed the front side of a paycheck in their life.
• 23:16
Speaker 5: So and they were arguing against everybody in West Virginia
• 23:20
Speaker 5: that has been doing payrolls forever that you got this wrong.
• 23:23
Speaker 5: And they just weren't listening just what.
• 23:25
Speaker 2: The Chamber of Commerce was one of those two that
• 23:28
Speaker 2: represents businesses of all sizes. It's not just large businesses.
• 23:31
Speaker 2: It said that this is that, this was that that
• 23:33
  Speaker 2: this wasn't needed.
• 23:34
Speaker 5: Absolutely, Yeah, chamber was one of the loud voices. I mean,
• 23:37
Speaker 5: there was you name it. Now there's there are organizations
• 23:40
Speaker 5: out there and this this this tends to happen in conservatism.
• 23:43
Speaker 5: We're more loud than we were as conservatives, for sure.
• 23:46
  Speaker 6: You know.
• 23:46
Speaker 5: It's just that not only are we conservative in our politics,
• 23:49
Speaker 5: so a lot of times we're conservative in our voice,
• 23:52
Speaker 5: and so the more liberal side of things that tended
• 23:55
Speaker 5: to be a very loud minority, we tend to be
• 23:57
Speaker 5: a quiet majority when it comes to issue. And in
• 24:01
Speaker 5: the business community that's very true. You'll you'll have you know,
• 24:04
Speaker 5: you have the Chamber of Commerce that's out there that
• 24:06
Speaker 5: has a bunch of memberships, and they go look, as
• 24:08
Speaker 5: representing a business community at large, we're going to take
• 24:11
Speaker 5: a position, and they'll take a loud position. But individual
• 24:14
Speaker 5: industries or individual businesses in industries tend to be very
• 24:18
Speaker 5: careful because they don't want the politics to try and
• 24:21
Speaker 5: hurt their business, right so they want to quietly influence policy,
• 24:26
Speaker 5: because if they come out loudly trying to influence policy
• 24:29
Speaker 5: and they tick off some of their customer base, then
• 24:31
Speaker 5: it's harmful their business. It's harmful for them to be
• 24:33
Speaker 5: able to make payroll. So outside of the chamber, almost
• 24:39
Speaker 5: to a business that contacted me or business owner or CEO,
• 24:44
Speaker 5: even if they're not an owner, saying, you know, giving
• 24:47
Speaker 5: what the heck, what are you guys doing? Why are
• 24:49
Speaker 5: you putting more regulation on Westreian businesses? That was the
• 24:53
Speaker 5: very loud side of the fact that this even went
• 24:55
Speaker 5: into Judiciary Committee in a Republican mega majority is ridiculous,
• 25:01
Speaker 5: and it was all over populous politics on a poll
• 25:05
Speaker 5: question that was probably saying, do you not do you
• 25:08
Speaker 5: want legal workers in your workforce in West region? Well,
• 25:11
Speaker 5: of course, who's not going to say that, right, so
• 25:14
Speaker 5: and then and are you are you in favor of
• 25:18
Speaker 5: enforcing policy against illegal immigration? Absolutely all these businesses are
• 25:23
Speaker 5: that are against this bill where as well, But this
• 25:26
Speaker 5: bill came out to harm the people that are doing
• 25:27
Speaker 5: it right in the name of that and the people
• 25:30
Speaker 5: who were pushing it really didn't care and that that
• 25:33
Speaker 5: was the problem with that bill.
• 25:34
Speaker 2: Talking again with State Senator Eric Tarr. The primary election
• 25:38
Speaker 2: is coming up. All the House seats were up, some
• 25:40
Speaker 2: of the Senate seats are up, including yours, and you
• 25:42
Speaker 2: do have primary opponents. I'm not going to really get
• 25:44
Speaker 2: into that, but i do want to say how much
• 25:47
Speaker 2: how much of what was just witnessed in the legislature
• 25:51
Speaker 2: do you think we'll go into the decision making of
• 25:54
Speaker 2: some voters what I'm what I'm getting at here, not
• 25:56
Speaker 2: just in the Senate, but let's talk about the House
• 25:58
Speaker 2: and just racists in general. If they go back and
• 26:01
Speaker 2: they look at this session, how much do you think
• 26:03
Speaker 2: the voting populace the constituency how much are they going
• 26:07
Speaker 2: to look at that session and either says it's time
• 26:11
Speaker 2: for a change or I'm not going to vote at
• 26:14
Speaker 2: all because these people are crazy or whatever.
• 26:17
Speaker 5: Is it going to be that big of a deal
• 26:19
Speaker 5: in your opinion? You know, I think it's going to
• 26:20
Speaker 5: affect some votes. You got to realize and when you're
• 26:22
Speaker 5: under the dome, you think everybody's paying attention. You know,
• 26:25
Speaker 5: so because you have a thousand people in each year
• 26:29
Speaker 5: all the time, so you think that everybody's paying attention.
• 26:33
Speaker 5: When the reality is when we step out at dome
• 26:35
Speaker 5: and start having these conversations outside of the politicos. I'm
• 26:40
Speaker 5: always surprised about how many people really don't pay attention,
• 26:43
Speaker 5: and so I think for those that are paying attention, absolutely,
• 26:47
Speaker 5: are they going to be enough to influence the election?
• 26:51
Speaker 5: I don't know, because what happens in these elections now
• 26:53
Speaker 5: that they're in the primary, actually when they're in the
• 26:55
Speaker 5: generals too, but in the primaries, what we're finding is
• 26:58
Speaker 5: is that national groups with big pocketbooks target our elections.
• 27:05
Speaker 5: And so you'll you'll have these superpacks that come in
• 27:07
Speaker 5: and they be maybe related to say pharmaceutical stuff, but
• 27:11
Speaker 5: they'll come in and run messages against candidates on something
• 27:15
Speaker 5: about guns or illegal immigration, like we were talking about whatever,
• 27:20
Speaker 5: So nothing to do with pharmaceuticals, but they'll go in
• 27:21
Speaker 5: target messaging and it had it doesn't even have to
• 27:24
Speaker 5: be anywhere close to true, because what we found in
• 27:27
Speaker 5: this last primary election season is that as long as
• 27:29
Speaker 5: you want the election, there's no repercussions efforts because you
• 27:33
Speaker 5: don't unseat them. And so they'd come in, they drop
• 27:35
Speaker 5: hundreds thousands of dollars in the last and the last
• 27:37
Speaker 5: you know, a few seconds of the game and then
• 27:40
Speaker 5: take out candidates based on information that could be far
• 27:45
Speaker 5: from the truth. And so what I get concerned about
• 27:49
Speaker 5: is when you have a low turnout election and you
• 27:52
Speaker 5: have that kind of messaging, each dollar has more potency
• 27:55
Speaker 5: to the person that reaches because you can really hammer
• 27:58
Speaker 5: a small group of people.
• 27:59
  Speaker 1: Instead.
• 28:00
Speaker 5: This is a non presidential year, which means you're going
• 28:02
Speaker 5: to have a lower turnout. It's a primary election, which
• 28:05
Speaker 5: is lower turnout, you know, so then a general election,
• 28:07
Speaker 5: so you're you can you can really get a lot
• 28:10
Speaker 5: of messaging impact with relatively little dollars, and the majority
• 28:14
Speaker 5: of those dollars are likely the ones would be harmful
• 28:17
Speaker 5: to getting this corrected are probably out of state dollars
• 28:22
Speaker 5: to be my guess.
• 28:22
Speaker 2: By the way, we want to encourage people to spend
• 28:24
Speaker 2: a lot of dollars here say just saying that before
• 28:27
Speaker 2: we let you go, give me a positive on this stas.
• 28:29
Speaker 5: Positive you know what we did no harm. There is
• 28:32
Speaker 5: so much momentum that right now in coming in West Virginia.
• 28:37
Speaker 5: We got a good compromise when it came through on
• 28:39
Speaker 5: a budget versus the tax cut. You got to you know,
• 28:41
Speaker 5: reduce income tax cut or one hundred and twenty five
• 28:44
Speaker 5: million dollars for this year. You're not really going to
• 28:46
  Speaker 5: fill that in short term. It's a it's a drop
• 28:48
Speaker 5: in the bucket relative what's needed in West Virginia. But
• 28:51
Speaker 5: we didn't get out ahead of our skis on the budget.
• 28:53
Speaker 5: That's a big positive. Another positive is is that the
• 28:57
Speaker 5: momentum that's been created over the past twelve to fifteen,
• 29:01
Speaker 5: about twelve years, ten twelve years, is really really still strong.
• 29:05
Speaker 5: We got some major, major investments that are coming into
• 29:08
Speaker 5: West Virginia that are going to change the lives of
• 29:10
Speaker 5: generations of families, and so I'm excited about that. I
• 29:13
Speaker 5: love seeing it. It's been a on honor of my
• 29:16
Speaker 5: life to get to be a part of it. And
• 29:18
Speaker 5: so you know, I hope that your listeners out there
• 29:20
Speaker 5: want to keep me up here and keep me in
• 29:21
  Speaker 5: that fight, because that's that's why I'm here. It's to
• 29:24
Speaker 5: get those jobs here in West Virginia and represent conservative values.
• 29:28
Speaker 5: So end you're listening and vote for Eric Carley Police.
• 29:31
Speaker 2: We end on a happy note. Absolutely right, You're just
• 29:34
Speaker 2: a happy guy, Senator Eric tar I know you can't
• 29:38
Speaker 2: see him right now, but I'll probably post a picture later.
• 29:40
  Speaker 2: He's you know he's in a T shirt today, which
• 29:42
Speaker 2: you don't see very often. I guess, I guess. Now
• 29:45
Speaker 2: the session is officially over when you ditch the suit
• 29:48
Speaker 2: and tie and have on a T shirt.
• 29:49
Speaker 5: You know, I get back to me jeans in a
• 29:50
Speaker 5: T shirt or my natural habitat.
• 29:53
Speaker 2: This is the thing about and I've known you for
• 29:55
Speaker 2: quite some time. The thing that I think is interesting
• 29:57
Speaker 2: about you is people I don't They think they know you,
• 30:01
Speaker 2: but they really don't. Because I was having a conversation
• 30:05
Speaker 2: with a coworker upstairs, but we were talking about your
• 30:07
Speaker 2: love of cars, and the person said, really, so I
• 30:11
  Speaker 2: didn't know that.
• 30:12
Speaker 5: So man, Yeah, I'm gonna get to know get to
• 30:14
  Speaker 5: know Eric Tarr.
• 30:15
Speaker 2: The ten thing I'll have you on the show sometimes,
• 30:18
Speaker 2: ten things you didn't know about Eric Tarr. None of
• 30:19
Speaker 2: them have to do with politics.
• 30:20
Speaker 11: That there you go.
• 30:22
Speaker 5: You can put my family around here and let them
• 30:25
Speaker 5: do that and they'll have a blast with that conversation and.
• 30:27
Speaker 2: You won't be a part of it. All right, Eric Tar,

Speaker 2: but one event covering up Monday night. He is trying
• 33:42
Speaker 2: to bring people together from all backgrounds out of the
• 33:46
Speaker 2: religious communities. Happening Monday evening seven at Basilica of the
• 33:51
Speaker 2: co Cathedral of Sacred Heart, Virginia Street here in Charleston,
• 33:53
Speaker 2: Moderated by Mark Adkinson. He joins us this morning in
• 33:56
Speaker 2: the Jerry Construction Studios. Good morning, say welcome to the show.
• 33:59
Speaker 16: Good morning day, Thanks thanks for having.
• 34:00
Speaker 2: Me tell us about this event.
• 34:01
Speaker 16: Overall, this event is part of the Root and Branch
• 34:05
Speaker 16: inter faith discussion group that's been going on for years
• 34:09
Speaker 16: actually in Charleston, in the Charleston area. It started by
• 34:13
Speaker 16: a lady named Hazel Crowley. It was her invention sort of,
• 34:18
Speaker 16: and she passed away a few years ago and she
• 34:23
Speaker 16: wanted us to continue it. So that's what we are doing.
• 34:25
Speaker 16: And it's a group of different, as you would guess,
• 34:29
Speaker 16: religious folks who get together and we discuss similarities which
• 34:35
Speaker 16: are surprising sometimes to different people. And we don't shy
• 34:41
Speaker 16: away from differences, but we do so in a respectful way.
• 34:46
Speaker 2: What a novel concept.
• 34:50
Speaker 7: It's not a place to prosely.
• 34:52
  Speaker 16: It's not a place to argue, it's not a place
• 34:55
  Speaker 16: to say I'm right and you're wrong. It's a place
• 34:59
Speaker 16: to come and learn about the other folks around us
• 35:02
Speaker 16: and hopefully come away knowing each other a little better.
• 35:06
Speaker 16: That There are a few members that are on the
• 35:08
Speaker 16: panel regularly. One is Rabbi Eureki that most of your
• 35:12
Speaker 16: listeners will know, who recently retired actually from the synagogue
• 35:17
Speaker 16: down the street. Another is Nasir abdu Salam, who's the
• 35:21
Speaker 16: Imam of the mosque down in South Charleston which is
• 35:25
Speaker 16: very big, thriving mosque and congregation. And this next week
• 35:31
Speaker 16: Monday Night will have folks from the Catholic background. Molly
• 35:37
Speaker 16: Lenahan Belcher, who's a theologian at Charleston Catholic is always
• 35:43
Speaker 16: on our panel and she'll be there, and we're also
• 35:45
Speaker 16: pleased to announce that Deacon Michael Kaywash will be there
• 35:50
Speaker 16: and welcome us in. So the one Monday Night will
• 35:53
Speaker 16: be basically focusing on Catholicism and how it interacts with
• 36:00
Speaker 16: other faiths and how the history of Catholicism and Protestant
• 36:04
Speaker 16: religions and Judaism and Islam all work together.
• 36:08
Speaker 2: Here's the interesting thing in looking at your lineup. Mark
• 36:11
Speaker 2: when I when we talk about getting people from different
• 36:14
Speaker 2: religious backgrounds, we're not talking about having the first Baptist
• 36:16
Speaker 2: church with the second Baptist church. Right, you could not
• 36:19
Speaker 2: get any more Pardon me for saying that you could
• 36:22
Speaker 2: not get any more different than the than the faiths
• 36:25
Speaker 2: that you have here. But but you're you're looking for
• 36:29
  Speaker 2: common ground. That's right, and there's there's a whole lot
• 36:31
Speaker 2: more of it, I think than what people may think.
• 36:35
Speaker 16: You're absolutely right. We like to say our similarities are
• 36:39
Speaker 16: greater than our differences, and I think that's true of
• 36:43
  Speaker 16: all religions.
• 36:45
Speaker 1: These are great people.
• 36:46
Speaker 16: They've become my friends, and they're just fantastic, and they
• 36:50
Speaker 16: share their time so generously. And and we also we're
• 36:56
Speaker 16: not doing it this coming week, although we'll talk about Protestants,
• 37:00
Speaker 16: but we've also included all the major Protestant churches in
• 37:04
Speaker 16: the Canall Valley too, and we'll do so in the future.
• 37:07
  Speaker 2: What's a typical discussion, Like, I know they're all going
• 37:10
Speaker 2: to be different depending on the parties that are there,
• 37:12
Speaker 2: but you just give me like a little thunnail. What's
• 37:14
  Speaker 2: a typical discussion.
• 37:15
Speaker 16: A typical discussion will be whichever group we're focusing on
• 37:19
Speaker 16: next week, it'll be Catholicism. We'll ask them about their background.
• 37:24
Speaker 16: First of all, if you haven't been to this basilica,
• 37:29
Speaker 16: you need to come just to see the building. It
• 37:31
Speaker 16: is so beautiful and it's it's very generous of them
• 37:34
Speaker 16: to let us have a meeting there, as I understand
• 37:36
Speaker 16: that a basilica, and I'm not Catholic, is a place
• 37:40
Speaker 16: where the Pope can come if he visits here. So
• 37:43
Speaker 16: next time the Pope or American Pope is in West Virginia, yeah,
• 37:47
Speaker 16: he may be down here.
• 37:47
Speaker 2: Make sure you get him on this show. I've interviewed
• 37:51
Speaker 2: a lot of people, but I've never done a pope.
• 37:52
Speaker 7: So we'll pass the word along. But a typical show is.
• 37:58
Speaker 16: Typical discussion group would be focusing on Catholicism. It's history,
• 38:04
Speaker 16: it's roots, maybe some of the things that's doing.
• 38:07
Speaker 1: Today in the world.
• 38:08
Speaker 16: And then toward the end we'll have in this group
• 38:12
Speaker 16: Rabbi Eureki and our Emam pitch in and say here's
• 38:16
Speaker 16: their views about it. There will be refreshments which are free,
• 38:20
Speaker 16: But the best part of the evening, frankly, is after
• 38:24
Speaker 16: the program is over, and then you've it will only last.
• 38:28
Speaker 7: An hour, and then you'll have.
• 38:31
Speaker 16: Half an hour or so with refreshments and people can
• 38:34
Speaker 16: ask all these people questions.
• 38:36
  Speaker 7: So if you've got a.
• 38:37
Speaker 16: Question about Judaism or Catholicism or Islam, you'll have the
• 38:42
Speaker 16: experts there that you can answer.
• 38:44
Speaker 2: You think, and here's the thing about it all, we're
• 38:46
Speaker 2: all guilty of stereotyping of any number of things. Yeah,
• 38:51
Speaker 2: but you think, well, those people believe this, and you
• 38:55
Speaker 2: find out, well, maybe they do and maybe they don't.
• 38:58
Speaker 2: And there's enough that goes around with all of the
• 39:01
Speaker 2: we all do it.
• 39:02
Speaker 7: Let me give you an example.
• 39:03
Speaker 16: Our last one, our last meeting was held at the
• 39:06
Speaker 16: synagogue here on Virginia Street, and the emom came and
• 39:13
Speaker 16: he spoke in a synagogue and he said, I have
• 39:16
Speaker 16: never been in a synagogue in my life. That was
• 39:19
Speaker 16: the first time this emom had been there. And then
• 39:22
Speaker 16: he spoke about how throughout history Muslims were friends to Jews,
• 39:29
Speaker 16: and the awful programs and all the problems that Jews
• 39:37
Speaker 16: went through weren't caused by Muslims throughout history. Now in
• 39:41
Speaker 16: recent history, obviously there are differences. And so that was
• 39:45
Speaker 16: great to hear, but for him to come to the
• 39:48
Speaker 16: synagogue for the first time was a great thing for us.
• 39:51
Speaker 2: And again, this is going to be It starts at
• 39:53
  Speaker 2: seven o'clock.
• 39:54
Speaker 16: Seven o'clock at the Basilica Co Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.
• 39:59
Speaker 16: Everyone knows where that is, downtown, So please come. It's
• 40:01
Speaker 16: free and we'd love to see you.
• 40:03
Speaker 2: It sounds like it's gonna be an interesting night. Is
• 40:05
Speaker 2: there somewhere online that people can learn more about the.
• 40:08
Speaker 16: We don't have an online presence right now.
• 40:10
Speaker 2: Okay, we'll make one, all right, we can work that
• 40:12
Speaker 2: out at the at the meeting. It sounds fascinating to me.
• 40:14
Speaker 2: I mean, it really really does.
• 40:15
Speaker 7: And I'm joining us.
• 40:16
Speaker 2: All right. We appreciate you being here.
• 40:18
  Speaker 3: Man.
• 40:18
Speaker 2: You'll serve as the moderator.
• 40:20
  Speaker 1: How's correct?
• 40:21
Speaker 2: And now do you moderate these like every time they
• 40:23
  Speaker 2: do them?
• 40:24
  Speaker 9: All right?
• 40:25
Speaker 2: Give me a good moderator story.
• 40:27
Speaker 16: A good moderators story. The best one is the when
• 40:31
Speaker 16: I just told you about having the email come to
• 40:33
Speaker 16: the synagogue to speak. Uh. But it's usually pretty lighthearted.
• 40:39
  Speaker 16: It's not overly.
• 40:43
  Speaker 2: Dense.
• 40:43
  Speaker 7: Really, it's a lightheart.
• 40:46
Speaker 2: So as a moderator, you you don't have to like
• 40:49
Speaker 2: you know, have security there. You don't have to lay
• 40:51
Speaker 2: hands on anybody or whatever where everybody's respectful. That's and
• 40:54
Speaker 2: that's that's gonna be honest with you, Mark, that's what
• 40:56
  Speaker 2: we need.
• 40:56
  Speaker 3: That's right.
• 40:56
Speaker 2: Appreciate you being here, good luck with great to be here.
