- 0:53but I'm really pleased to have this now.
- 0:54So I'm going to hand you over to Carla.
- 0:55She's amazing and she's going to answer the questions and you're
- 0:58going to learn a lot. All right, guys, Peace.
- 0:59Hi Lee, My name is Carla Pretorius and I'm a registered
- 1:03therapist. I'm also Neera Divergent myself
- 1:06and I've been working in the field of nearest for 20 plus
- 1:09years. It really is something that I
- 1:11love doing. I love learning from my clients
- 1:14and sharing these learnings with you and also sharing what works
- 1:19in my own life. So there was a question from
- 1:21Laura that said I want to learn but struggle to remember or to
- 1:25remember in the right order. I've noticed that I seem to
- 1:29remember the letters in wrong order in certain names.
- 1:33So I don't want to make any snap judgments or snap diagnosis
- 1:38here, provide any snap diagnosis here.
- 1:40So I will steer clear from that. What I will do, however, is I
- 1:44will provide some practical support strategies for Laura and
- 1:48for people that are struggling with the same issue, So
- 1:52struggling to remember. Our brand is amazing.
- 1:55We can find new ways for our pathways to create ways to
- 1:59remember. So for example, if you are
- 2:02struggling with your working memories, so they say you want
- 2:05to make a cup of coffee, walk to the kitchen and you forgot what
- 2:09you were doing. An idea there could be as soon
- 2:11as you have something that you want to do and you have time to
- 2:14do it right now, I would write it down and I would carry that
- 2:17piece of paper with a while you're walking to the kitchen.
- 2:20You've got like a little sticky pad or you can do it on your
- 2:23phone and it just says remember coffee.
- 2:25I have that same thing where I would grind the coffee beans and
- 2:29I would walk away just to go and do something quickly and then I
- 2:34should get about the coffee beans that I've been grinded.
- 2:36So that happens to me quite often.
- 2:38I would definitely recommend to help your working memory out a
- 2:43little bit, maybe with sticky note or like I said, something
- 2:46on technology so that you don't waste too much paper.
- 2:49And then also the other option there is while you're thinking
- 2:52about something, to have it in pairs or in threes.
- 2:57So let's say you want to again go and make a cup of tea or a
- 3:00cup of coffee. You can say I want coffee, I
- 3:03want coffee. And then just kind of tap your
- 3:05fingers like this. And while you're walking, you
- 3:11can also do this. And when you're at the kitchen,
- 3:15you can do this again. And that would provide you the
- 3:18prompt to remember what you wanted to do in the kitchen.
- 3:22This is just a simple example of something practical that you can
- 3:25try out. If it doesn't work, please let
- 3:28me know in the comments and I will try and find some more more
- 3:31things for you to test out. I don't want to overwhelm you
- 3:34with too many things. So I'm not going to provide like
- 3:3720 different things because then I feel we feel overwhelmed and
- 3:41we want to try everything. So I just want to make sure that
- 3:44we try one thing, rule it out and try it out for a little
- 3:47while. So not just once, but try it out
- 3:50for like a couple of weeks and see if it makes a difference.
- 3:53The rest of the comments said or to remember in order.
- 3:57So remembering in order again, I would use the tapping strategy
- 4:02where I would say first coffee, then walk the dog, then series,
- 4:08watching series, coffee, dog series, coffee dog series,
- 4:14coffee dog series while I'm drinking the coffee, I know next
- 4:18is walking the dog and then series.
- 4:21So we're kind of like teaching ourselves in patterns and we're
- 4:26providing prompt, like a tactile prompt for ourselves for our
- 4:29brain to remember. So it's a little bit different
- 4:32of just remembering by telling ourselves, remember to do these
- 4:36three things. I had a client once that told me
- 4:39that she remembers everything in threes and another client
- 4:42remembers everything in sevens. So it's really it's, it depends
- 4:47on what kind of number you'd like and how many things you
- 4:50have to do. So you can always break it up in
- 4:52threes. And then another three different
- 4:54things that you need to do. Try that out, see if it works.
- 4:58Let me know in the comments section below.
- 5:00And then the last one was I've I've noticed that I seem to
- 5:03remember letters in wrong orders in certain names.
- 5:07So I'm learning at the moment. I live in Portugal and I'm
- 5:11learning Portuguese. So for me, the first time I I
- 5:15heard it, I told my Portuguese friend friends that it sounds
- 5:18like they, they sounded a bit Russian to me in the way that
- 5:22they were speaking. It was a very foreign excuse on
- 5:26language for me to learn. So what I really appreciated was
- 5:30when my Portuguese teacher told me to break it down in
- 5:34syllables. And I feel like with a lot of
- 5:37autistic people, a lot of people with ADHD, our brains are so
- 5:40quick and we think about so many different things all at once
- 5:44that we struggle to kind of just slow down and process what what
- 5:49information is being provided to us.
- 5:52So if somebody tells me their name is which his name is Joe.
- 5:57Wow. And in the beginning, I was
- 5:59like, Joe, what's your name? You, you know, it was very
- 6:02tricky for me to remember that name.
- 6:04So then I had to really break it down to Zhu.
- 6:07Or wow, Zhu, wow, Zhu, wow. And that made more sense.
- 6:16So I would break it down in syllables.
- 6:18That's not really breaking it down in syllables, but more in
- 6:20sounds. And then I would go really slow.
- 6:24And I would also see it in my mind's eye, the Zhu
- 6:29phonetically. Wow.
- 6:32And I would probably add a bit of meaning to it too.
- 6:37So I'd go like, like, that's quite a quick one.
- 6:42And then, oh, wow. So in my mind, I see.
- 6:46WOW. Wow.
- 6:49So that's what I see when somebody tells me their name is
- 6:52Joao. For other people, it's really
- 6:55quick. Joao.
- 6:56Oh, Joao. Oh.
- 6:57Pleased to meet you. For me, I have to break it down.
- 7:00So I would I would recommend that see if it makes a
- 7:03difference. If it doesn't, again please
- 7:05comment below and let me know if it does.
- 7:08Also comment because it would be great if we can, if we can share
- 7:12what works and what doesn't work.
- 7:14For any other questions, please feel free to comment or to book
- 7:17a session. I've got a 15 minute free
- 7:20consultation that you can take on, take up on any time.
- 7:24I would love to meet you and I would love to share some
- 7:27strategies that have worked for my clients for 20 plus years of
- 7:30working with amazing neurodivergent individuals.
- 7:34Thank you so much for listening. I'll speak to you soon.
- 7:36Ciao, decrease the time in receiving an assessment.
- 7:40Please do write that down as well because then we can also
- 7:44learn from each other. I think that's the main thing
- 7:46for me is to really share what I know, but also learn from the
- 7:50clients that I serve from you. So thank you so much for being
- 7:54here. I'll speak too soon.
- 7:56Don't forget, if you want to book a session with Cal, there's
- 7:58a link in the description down below.
- 7:59Thank you guys for watching this video.
- 8:01Give it a thumbs up if you liked it and I'll see you in the next
