AlterNet, citing emails obtained by POLITICO, reports that Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau repeatedly ordered special representative Paolo Zampolli to stop conducting foreign-policy work beyond cultural diplomacy. Zampolli nevertheless met foreign officials about energy, investment, aviation, and other commercial matters, while insisting that he answered directly to President Donald Trump.
