- 0:00Hey guys, this is more here from Catatonia and you're listening to Heavy mag
- 0:05beautiful My thanks for joining us the same thing, thank you, thanks for
- 0:09having me, my pleasure. So Cantonia will be touring Australia for a run
- 0:14of dates, starting in Sydney on February the night and going through Melbourne,
- 0:18Brisbane and Adelaide and finishing in Perth on February the thirty eighth. Mate,
- 0:21Like, that's not too far away now you're packed and ready to go pretty
- 0:26much. We just came back, came back from the first show of this
- 0:30year. We did Turkey this Saturday. So I'm taking taking taking a time
- 0:36off, day off or two and then just getting back into it. Yeah.
- 0:42Hey, look, you guys are no strangers to tour and you go
- 0:44pretty much all over the world. So to tell us two non essential items
- 0:49that you always take with you everywhere you go. Non essential? Yeah,
- 0:57I always bring a book I won't read, like I always over I always
- 1:03overpacked books. So there's always going to be one book that I don't read,
- 1:08but I feel like I need to bring because if I don't have it,
- 1:11I'll just be bored. I never read it, and I recently bought,
- 1:18like last year, one of these like Bluetooth thingies for the entertainment system
- 1:23on the airplanes. You can connect to your Bluetooth earphones to the entertainment system.
- 1:30Never used it because I never watched movies on a plane, so but
- 1:34I still need them because you know, of course, but they've proven they've
- 1:42proven to be pretty non essential physically, So not just talking about this trip
- 1:48might but like with all of your shows, like how do you prepare yourself
- 1:52physically and mentally for a run of dates so far from home? The first
- 1:57thing is getting loading up on sleep. I know it doesn't really work like
- 2:00that, but just getting sleep and rest, getting your vitamins, in,
- 2:06getting your supplements, in doing your like even leaving home for a run of
- 2:10days of a couple of weeks, even if you can't even if you're not
- 2:16able to do your workouts, do your stretches on the road, you're gonna
- 2:23you're gonna have pretty crappy sleep all throughout. If you cannot prepare with all
- 2:30of that at home, you'll be fine, basically, So that's what I
- 2:37think we all try to do. Just unwind, prepare physically and mentally and
- 2:44while we're out there. The lack of sleep, the lack of like healthy
- 2:50food doesn't really affect us as much. If we would live at home like
- 2:54we do on tour, I don't think we would survive this. We're getting
- 2:59too old. I suppose the big thing, bro is what can fans expect
- 3:05from the band on this tour. I mean, this run is pretty pretty
- 3:10cool since it's been so long since we came, so we've basically released two
- 3:15albums since then. But the last time we did Australia we toured for Fall
- 3:21Hearts and we've since released both City Burials and Skyboard of Stars, And I
- 3:27mean the set this is going to be a bit different from last time.
- 3:30Obviously. I think we're playing a slightly longer set than last time, so
- 3:36we're trying to treat you to a proper headline experience from what we're doing now
- 3:43with the two albums in our backs, and it's going to be from the
- 3:49last time we came. It's gonna be pretty different so that that last time,
- 3:54well, I think this is your first Australian headlining tour since twenty sixteen,
- 3:59so aside from a couple of albums, might like what's changed with the
- 4:01band since you're hear last, I mean we're not much has changed really.
- 4:09We've been working, we've been touring, we've been just building momentum, and
- 4:13I think we're in a place now where we're still growing and we're expecting to
- 4:20grow as a band. So we're just trying to work as much as possible
- 4:26and maybe that mentality has changed or strengthened in some way. But yeah,
- 4:35I think we're stronger band now than then. We're stronger band on stage,
- 4:40we have better material out there. It's we're a better band. So that's
- 4:46what's changed. If anything. That chow is not long after you actually joined
- 4:51the band, mate, So but what are some of memories of that cho
- 4:55as a new guy. I guess just getting into meeting fans that have a
- 5:05connection to the band like Cat. Cat fans have a deep connection to the
- 5:11band. We we go way back in for some in some people's lives,
- 5:15and seeing as the band has progressed musically and having those old fans still be
- 5:21with us. I've obviously never experienced that before. So that was one of
- 5:28the coolest things about starting starting to play with Cat and going to Australia.
- 5:32Obviously never been to Australia. It's I wouldn't say it was overwhelming, but
- 5:42it's it was whelming. So yeah, I mean we had a lot of
- 5:49meeting greets on that tour. We were gonna have meeting greets on this tour
- 5:54as well, and just meeting those fans that go so far back with the
- 5:58band. That's still one of the best things we're playing with it with the
- 6:02band. How would you say that you've grown into your role or your position
- 6:09in the band since then? I mean musically, it's in the beginning,
- 6:15it was just about getting to know the music, getting to know how Daniel
- 6:21played his part in the band, and then trying to evolve from just being
- 6:30a drummer playing his parts. Evolved from just being a drummer playing the new
- 6:34parts to being a like a part of the band that isn't just a musician.
- 6:45And I think obviously I don't write material Jonas does all writing, but
- 6:51the way the way I approach it and the way we all approach it and
- 6:56interpret his material or even though old man, it's it's not been a challenge
- 7:04per se, but it has been I've had to approach my way of working
- 7:13on my way of drumming in a different way, and that has also helped
- 7:17me to grow into the band and gel with the guys and with the music
- 7:21we're playing. So it's it's been a process, it's an ongoing process,
- 7:28but I definitely do not feel like it's a new guy anymore. I could
- 7:34You're Gonna be toure on the back of last year's album, skyboyd of Stars.
- 7:39So how was ever saved by the fans very well? Fans and critics
- 7:45have pretty much loved the album from what I can see, and we see.
- 7:49The Burials was released in the middle or in the start of the pandemic,
- 7:53so that was obviously going to be buried pretty much on release. We
- 8:00got to do one tour for that album in the US, and we kind
- 8:05of already knew that the album is old before we can even try to keep
- 8:13it alive. So starting a new in a way with the release of Skyvoid
- 8:20of Stars, I think that was a fresh breath of air for us and
- 8:26the fans who had also maybe not forgotten about forgotten about cere burials. But
- 8:33it's still the pandemic was so long, maybe not in time, but like
- 8:39mentally, it just dragged on so when we finally got this release, Skyboard
- 8:45the Stars, it felt like it had been not three years since the last
- 8:50album, but six years. So I think both we and the fans have
- 8:56the same feelings. So when we did release Skyvoid, it was very well
- 9:00received, and because something that we all missed having. The fans missed us
- 9:05releasing an album and touring for it, and we missed releasing album and touring
- 9:09for it, and so we've been doing that in the entire year and we're
- 9:13we're still not tired of it. I don't think the fans are. And
- 9:18I guess these shows will show if Australia is ready, how much of that
- 9:24album we're actually going to be playing live over here a fair bit. Fair
- 9:28bit. Having so many albums in the back and so many hit songs,
- 9:35I guess it's very tricky to write set lists to appease everyone. I mean
- 9:41people, people still want to hear basically half of discouraged ones when we play
- 9:48live, and that's just not going to happen. Not because we don't want
- 9:52to play those songs, but we have so much material that we feel that
- 9:58we need to play, also that we want to play, so we're doing
- 10:03a fair bit of tracks from sky Void on this run. Actually, all
- 10:09right, mat Well, thanks very much for you time. It's been a
- 10:11pleasure speaking really. The Chores starts on February the ninth in Sydney and there's
- 10:16still tickets available, so get yourself one before they will go. Yeah,
