Transcript
- 0:02SRI aurobindo describes the first step to move from a mental
- 0:05seeking to a living spiritual experience as the practice of
- 0:11concentration of your Consciousness within yourself.
- 0:16We asked what this means. Exactly.
- 0:19Some observation of our mental state discloses, what we
- 0:22normally consider to be concentration We focus on
- 0:26solving some issue or problem in our lives or we focus on some
- 0:31experience. Some opportunity, some
- 0:35relationship some event. In each case, we turn our
- 0:40concentration outwards towards the external world and attach
- 0:45our Focus to those external objects.
- 0:49If we are not concentrated on some specific outer
- 0:52circumstance, we are for the most part, receiving sense,
- 0:56perceptions, and moving more or less randomly through, whatever
- 1:01presents itself to our senses or Rises up as a result of past
- 1:06impressions. We may experience hunger or
- 1:11thirst, desire, or ambition of some sort or we may simply
- 1:16distract our attention, through, various forms of entertainment.
- 1:20We may be caught up in the idea of accumulating clothes, or
- 1:24technology or cars or jewelry. These distractions do not
- 1:30involve much in the way of concentration generally.
- 1:34And the mind jumps from one object to another when
- 1:38concentration is lacking. None of this however represents
- 1:43the concentration within oneself, SRI, aurobindo
- 1:47references. When the Seeker first attempts
- 1:52to understand and experience an inner concentration, he is
- 1:56immediately confronted with the almost endless distracting.
- 2:00Forces of sent perceptions feelings thoughts ideas, and
- 2:06emotions there is no settled peace in the mind and may he may
- 2:11feel like it is an impossible task.
- 2:15Yogic science provides various guiding techniques to
- 2:19systematically prepare for an inward concentration, regardless
- 2:24of the specific method chosen with regular practice.
- 2:28And patience the Mind eventually comes to a status of questions
- 2:33which is the basis for inward concentration.
- 2:38Some paths advise following the breath in and out to attain this
- 2:42initial stage others use Is the combination of a mantra with the
- 2:47breath to drive out thoughts or perceptions, which can act as
- 2:51disturbances still others recommend putting the whole
- 2:55attention on creation of a mood. That one becomes such as deep
- 3:00aspiration, where nothing else can intervene.
- 3:05And the entire being is focused on this aspiration, Focusing on
- 3:11a visualization or even on a single point of light can move.
- 3:15One away from the surface being and eventually a point comes
- 3:20where one can lose track of time, space and Circumstance and
- 3:25simply dwell in an inner space of light and calm the
- 3:31experience. When it first arises may occur
- 3:34without warning. And without any form of
- 3:36expectation, as the Consciousness simply shifts away
- 3:40From All Surface distractions. it may be helpful to create a
- 3:45space and a specific time to quiet the mind and undertake the
- 3:50practice as the regular process sets up a rhythm in the being,
- 3:56Once the n-word awareness becomes quite regular the
- 4:00Seeker. No longer need depend on such a
- 4:02formal practice or discipline to recreate the Inner Space of
- 4:07awareness, SRI, aurobindo notes. Quote, you have asked, what is
- 4:14the discipline to be followed in order to convert the mental
- 4:17seeking into a living spiritual experience?
- 4:20The first necessity is the practice of concentration.
- 4:25Of your Consciousness within yourself.
- 4:29The ordinary human mind has an activity on the surface, which
- 4:32veils the real self. But there is another a hidden
- 4:37Consciousness within behind the surface one in which we can
- 4:43become aware of the real self and of a larger deeper.
- 4:47Truth of nature, can realize the self and liberate and transform
- 4:52the nature to quiet. The surface mind and begin to
- 4:57live within This is the object of this concentration.
- 5:02And quote, reference SRI aurobindo, and the mother
- 5:07growing within the psychology of inner development, chapter for
- 5:13growth of Consciousness. First Steps in Foundation ages,
