- Lucas: Ciao, and welcome back to Learn Italian with Fexingo! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna! We're so glad you're here. Lucas: Thanks for tuning in. So, Luna, I was thinking about our last episode — the bakery story. Luna: Oh yes! I loved that. I still remember how to say 'Mi chiamo'. Lucas: Exactly! And today, we're going to learn something new. We'll talk about... family! Luna: Oh, family? That's so nice. I love my family. Lucas: Me too. And in Italian, the word for 'family' is 'famiglia'. Luna: Famiglia. Lucas: Perfect. Famiglia. Let's say it together: famiglia. Luna: Famiglia. Lucas: Great! Now, let's learn the members. The word for 'mother' is 'madre'. Luna: Madre. Lucas: Yes. Madre. It's similar to English 'mother', right? Luna: Yeah, it sounds like 'maternal'. I can remember that. Lucas: Good. And 'father' is 'padre'. Luna: Padre. Lucas: Exactly. Padre. Like 'paternal'. Luna: Padre. Okay, I got that. Lucas: Now, 'brother' is 'fratello'. Luna: Fratello. That sounds like 'fraternal'. Lucas: You're catching on! And 'sister' is 'sorella'. Luna: Sorella. That one is new for me. Lucas: No worries. Repeat after me: sorella. Luna: Sorella. Lucas: Perfect. So, let's review all four: madre, padre, fratello, sorella. Luna: Madre, padre, fratello, sorella. I think I've got them. Lucas: Let's try a little conversation. If I say 'La mia famiglia', it means 'my family'. Luna: La mia famiglia. My family. Lucas: Yes. Now, let's say 'My mother' — 'La mia madre'. Luna: La mia madre. Lucas: And 'My father' — 'Il mio padre'. Luna: Wait, why 'il mio' for father and 'la mia' for mother? Lucas: Great question. In Italian, words have genders. 'Madre' is feminine, so we use 'la mia'. 'Padre' is masculine, so 'il mio'. Luna: Oh, I see. So 'my brother' would be 'il mio fratello'. Lucas: Exactly! And 'my sister' — 'la mia sorella'. Luna: La mia sorella. Okay, that makes sense. Lucas: Let's practice a full sentence. 'La mia famiglia è grande' means 'My family is big'. Luna: La mia famiglia è grande. My family is big. Lucas: Now you try: say 'My mother is kind'. Luna: Umm... 'La mia madre è...' how do you say 'kind'? Lucas: We haven't learned that yet! For now, just say 'La mia madre è buona' — 'good'. Luna: Ah, okay. La mia madre è buona. Lucas: Perfect. You're building sentences already. Luna: I'm trying! So, for father: 'Il mio padre è buono'. Lucas: Yes! You changed 'buona' to 'buono' because 'padre' is masculine. Well done! Luna: Oh, right! So adjectives change too. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's do a quick quiz. I'll say a word in English, you say it in Italian. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Lucas: Mother. Luna: Madre. Lucas: Father. Luna: Padre. Lucas: Brother. Luna: Fratello. Lucas: Sister. Luna: Sorella. Lucas: Family. Luna: Famiglia. Lucas: You did amazing! Luna: Thank you! I feel like I can talk about my family now. Lucas: You can! Let's try a mini conversation. I'll ask you: 'Come stai?' You answer and tell me about your family. Luna: Bene, grazie! La mia famiglia è piccola. Ho una sorella. Lucas: Wonderful! 'I have a sister.' That's 'Ho una sorella.' Great job. Luna: So 'ho' means 'I have'? I like that. Lucas: Yes. But we'll save that for another episode. For now, focus on the family words. Luna: Good idea. One step at a time. Lucas: Let's do one more listen-repeat round. I'll say each word slowly, then you repeat. Luna: Perfect. Lucas: Famiglia. Luna: Famiglia. Lucas: Madre. Luna: Madre. Lucas: Padre. Luna: Padre. Lucas: Fratello. Luna: Fratello. Lucas: Sorella. Luna: Sorella. Lucas: Excellent. You've got them all. Luna: I do! Now I need to practice saying them in sentences. Lucas: For sure. Try saying 'My family is important' — 'La mia famiglia è importante'. Luna: La mia famiglia è importante. Lucas: Beautiful. And that's a wrap for today's episode. Luna: Aww, already? I was having fun! Lucas: Me too. But remember, you can practice these words anytime. Listen again, repeat out loud. Luna: Will do. Thanks Lucas, and thanks to all of you listening. Lucas: Yes, grazie mille for being with us. This is Learn Italian with Fexingo. Luna: See you next time! A dopo! Lucas: A dopo! And practice that famiglia vocabulary.
