Latest / Others Receiving Votes / LSU vs. SEC Drama Continues, Week 1 Preview
Transcript
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: By welcome back to show others receiving votes.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_00]: I'm Pat Forty joined by my sidekick, Jean Wajahowski.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_00]: Oh Jean, we're going to tell people how the sausage actually gets made here in the podcast factory.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_00]: Today we have a show lined up with content, previewing week one,
- 0:25[SPEAKER_00]: talking about all the games, people we can't wait to see play, but we are also, as of right now, Thursday, September 3rd, 317 PM, Eastern, 217, Chicago, land, time where Jean is being held hostage by trial events in Louisiana.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_00]: And so we want to get this information out to you, our preview information.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_00]: But we're also running the risk of having some massive legal development happen during the show or after the show if it happens during we'll get to it if it happens after we tried.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_00]: But Gino this is where we are Greg Sanky was on the stand earlier this afternoon we know that in a Baton Rouge courtroom.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_00]: as the LSU specifically tries to get players in uniform, on the roster, in uniform, and in action, who had been on NFL roster's SEC is resisting it.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_00]: The other plot twist, the SEC today, sued LSU over this issue in federal court in Alabama.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: which could end up vetoing anything that happens in Louisiana, but we'll see.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: There's many steps to go.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_00]: Gene, what, I mean, broad strokes here.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: What do you make of this other fiasco on the eve of week one of college football?
- 1:51[SPEAKER_01]: I never thought,
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: Then in many ways, the most interesting matchup of the week would be LSU versus SEC in a Baton Rouge courtroom, but it really is.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_01]: And I actually was thinking, what if we were putting odds on this game that's going on right now between LSU and the SEC, who would be favored?
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: Great question.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: Homecourt and Van Homes field advantage certainly to LSU.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: I think there's two different games being played.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: I would make LSU a
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: two and a half point favorite in Baton Rouge, right?
- 2:31[SPEAKER_00]: I would make the SEC a six point favorite in federal court and Birmingham.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: I'm also not a legal scholar, but that's how I see this thing.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: The problem is, how long does it take for things to play out in Birmingham?
- 2:45[SPEAKER_00]: Could we have a ruling today in Louisiana that puts these players in position to be on the field for LSU Saturday when they do by the way, play a pretty big game against Thompson.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_00]: But then we have the SEC come back and win a ruling in federal court that says no, get them out of there in a week or two weeks or however long it may take I don't know what are your odds where you landed well.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_01]: At this point, who knows what is going to happen and as I've demonstrated through the year and a half or year plus I've been doing this podcast with you, I'm the worst predictor there's ever been, but I simply can't see how a court is going to side with LSU on this in Bat Rouge or any other city, I understand the home field advantage argument.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: But the legal argument seems to be totally on the SEC side in this case.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_01]: So I would be shocked if this Baton Rouge court rules in favor of LSU.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: Then again, at this point, does anything shock you with it.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: But I think ultimately, these players are not going to be able to join a college roster.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_01]: The the bizarre part about it as you just mentioned is here we are hours away from kickoff of week one and we don't know who's going to be on a roster who or who isn't and it's just it's just mind boggling that this is where we are, but then when you start.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: mentioning it's Lane Kippen.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's OSU.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's the SEC.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_01]: I guess anything is possible.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_00]: It is.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_00]: It is.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_00]: Don't do it.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's infuriating, it's exhausting, it's bewildering.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: And it's insulting, I think, to the fans too.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, this is not how a sport should be run and this is not what we should be talking about.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_00]: And a lot of people can point fingers a lot of different ways.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: But on Thursday, September 3rd, where games are starting this evening,
- 5:02[SPEAKER_00]: we should be talking about football and watching football instead of this ongoing circus that all relates back to the horrific leadership in this sport.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_00]: The absolute inability for people to come together over a set of rules and say, that's what we're gonna do.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_00]: And then go do it.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: Instead, this is where we are, you know, if you get in the pro sports leagues and you want to break the rules, you end up with what the clippers got, which was absolute nuclear disaster where the NBA came in and smoked them into rubble.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, taking away five first round draft picks is monstrous.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: So the fact that college sports can't do that, I think is is a huge weakness.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: And it allows people to play to their basis instincts.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_00]: And that's where we get to LSU and the lane kiffin and to the governor of Louisiana and his appointed toady president and the toady president's appointed toady athletic director.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: And that's where we are.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: LSU, and look, you've been to a bunch of games there.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: I've been there, it's great fun.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_00]: The people are fun, that they act like they're Texas tech, like they're some rogue little guy trying to punch their way up by any means necessary.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_00]: You're LSU, you went national championships.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_00]: You put 100,000 people in the stadium.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_00]: You have one of the biggest budgets in the country.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have to act like a rogue scoff law.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_00]: and still they do it.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_00]: I just can you possibly explain to me the mentality that has gone into making that university the way it is?
- 6:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's astounding.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_01]: This is the hill that you want to possibly die on over over these players.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_01]: The NFL in college football are like in many ways.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, now they are.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you have players in college football, the best in the better players making millions of dollars.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: They are playing in palaces that are equal if not better than what we see in the NFL.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_01]: We have free agency in college football.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: We have agents.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: We have constant movement, it mirrors the NFL in so many ways, but there is a separation point, and I think we've reached a point where it's finally people are saying, okay, this is a bridge too far and to me, the separation point is.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_01]: Not just when they hand you a diploma on your graduation day, but when you hear your name announced on NFL Draft Day, when you sign your name on an NFL contract, when you sign your name on a free agent contract, when you sign your name on a tryout for an NFL team, you are no longer a college player.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_01]: You're an NFL player now and you just can't come back in as silly and maybe as quaint as it might sound I do think that there's a difference and in that difference between college football and the NFL.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_01]: is that it feels different.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_01]: I know it's a professional game now.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: I know for all intense and purposes, it is professional, but there's still is a part of college football that just feels different than the NFL.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_01]: And this is a line that I think if you're the SEC or any other conference, and you don't draw your line in cement right now,
- 8:43[SPEAKER_01]: You'll set a precedent and you'll never be able to go back.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_01]: So I applaud the SEC for drawing that line and standing firm.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_01]: And those chancellors and presidents coming out and saying, we'll use a hammer, we'll use a sledge hammer, we'll use a jack hammer, we'll use as you said, the nuclear option if we have to.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_01]: But I think this is the point.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_01]: This is a defining moment in college athletics.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'm with you.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_00]: I agree.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_00]: That's well said that this is one of those lines where it's no longer college athletics if this gets crossed.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: If we regularly have a, and it players who can't make an NFL team but tried were, were hired to play professional football in some capacity.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_00]: And they said,
- 9:38[SPEAKER_00]: Fundamentally broken kind of the contract that college sports has with its fans and with its very construct.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_00]: And the, the, the,
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: things are tenuous enough between college sports and the fans, right?
- 9:53[SPEAKER_00]: We have pushed it and pushed it and pushed it and pushed it and pushed it.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_00]: And I think this is one where a whole lot of fans are like, no, no, and that's where I think the people on campuses, other than LSU, and maybe a few other spots, it's not this is not 100% LSU thing, but they are the ones actively
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: You become a professional athlete.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_00]: You go to that, then you leave behind this over here.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_00]: And you've got your, now you get five years to play.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a terrible deal.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: You get five years, you get a chance to make a lot of money if you're good.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_00]: When that time is over, you go on.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_00]: You are done.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_00]: You get on with your life.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a terrible deal.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: And to have,
- 10:42[SPEAKER_00]: schools try to weasel their way back into having these players to me as it just runs counter to everything that has made college sports part of what it is.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_00]: There is still an educational at university based underpinning here.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_00]: They play the games on campuses.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_00]: They play them.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_00]: In front of the student body, it's not Lucas oil stadium.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_00]: It's not so far, maybe bigger, but still it is not it's not professional football.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_00]: And you you grow that further, and I think you keep just keep eroding everything there.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: I am, we taught, we were discussing this via text yesterday.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: Today, I thought I was wondering whether the SEC was posturing, we're able to save a rattling with the, you know, the presidents of Tennessee and Georgia coming out and saying, we support SEC action against LSU with the Attorney General of Georgia, the Attorney General of South Carolina.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_00]: I thought they were just trying to get LSU to fold before they went
- 11:49[SPEAKER_00]: That didn't happen and now we've got a suit filed.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_00]: So I, uh, I was a little bit, I may be underestimated the seriousness of this.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: Let me ask you.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_00]: Again, if you are LSU, do you want to risk expulsion from the SEC to play guys that I don't even think are going to be starters?
- 12:08[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, certainly not weak one, but like, is it really worth it to go down this line for a backup tight end and a backup defensive end and probably a backup defensive back?
- 12:20[SPEAKER_01]: Well, the answer of course is no, but when Lane Kiffin isn't involved in the equation, 2 plus 2 does not always equal 4.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: But you predicted this last week in a way, Pat.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you referenced the big 12 and Texas Tech.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_01]: And that lawsuit that was filed.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: And you mentioned that, you know, are we headed towards something similar?
- 12:45[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we got our answer today.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_01]: We are.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_01]: And maybe there was a concerted effort.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_01]: uh, uh, coordinated effort by those presidents and chancellor's of the SEC and those AG's, not stable rambling, but put sort of, I don't know, giving LSU, uh, a fair warning.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_01]: And and LSU here, here's what could happen.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we're serious.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_01]: And LSU,
- 13:16[SPEAKER_01]: probably thought about it, but when it had anyway.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: So I think maybe there was some expectation that LSU would back down, but obviously that didn't happen.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_01]: And maybe they still will.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe they still will, but they've definitely, the SEC definitely elevated the stakes here.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: And this is sort of played out legally as an assortment of legal experts in the sports business
- 13:46[SPEAKER_01]: that it would get to this point that there would be, yes, you see, would file a lawsuit in federal court.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_01]: So this is not a shocker from a legal aspect, but I guess it's shocking just to see where we are at this point hours away from a kickoff and we're still messing with this.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so the deaths a couple deadlines for people in case they have been, you know, trekking all the minutiae this, your roster for the season has to be input by software, public conference and the NCAA 24 hours before your first game, and that's your roster.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: And so LSU plays Saturday night.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_00]: They have got this is Thursday afternoon.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_00]: They've got another
- 14:36[SPEAKER_00]: Roughly 16 hours or so to decide who they're going to put on the roster, I do wonder if the timing of the SEC suit was after that hearing started in Baton Rouge.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_00]: I wonder if they waited to see, okay, as else you're going to go through with this and then they went and they went to court and then bang the gavel and started that hearing said, okay, we're walking down the street and Birmingham and we're filing here and so now we've got the suits going on.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see how LSU handles the next 27 or so hours.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_00]: And Pat, look, if they don't like the SEC, leave.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they don't have to be in the SEC.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_01]: But what are the alternatives?
- 15:21[SPEAKER_01]: Are you going to become an independent, join UConn and Notre Dame?
- 15:24[SPEAKER_01]: You're the number three independent?
- 15:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_01]: Would you go to the big 12?
- 15:29[SPEAKER_01]: You know, a conference that
- 15:31[SPEAKER_01]: might welcome them and their sensibilities, might fit what else use sensibilities are at this moment, but I just can't see that happening.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_00]: So it would be,
- 15:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, I mean, I think it would be absolutely suicidal, first of all, you can go into Penny, you will go into Penny with this much stink on your right now.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_00]: Good luck, schedule and anybody.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_00]: Big 12, I agree.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_00]: That would be the kind of thing.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_00]: Like, and we're just, this is obviously all Armageddon scenario that LSU actually walks away or is expelled either way from the SEC.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_00]: But big 12.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_00]: Sure, the difference in annual payout which drives everything in your meteorized deals would be be cutting it like probably about in half.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: And doing that, you might as well, then you are just committing financial suicide and the initial competitive suicide, esteem, damage, etc.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: You would just, you would make no, there would be no rational
- 16:33[SPEAKER_00]: reason to do any of those things.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_00]: But they're obviously not operating very rationally.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_00]: That's the fascinating thing here.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's again, like we haven't got the whole thing seems to be being run by a shoot from the hip governor down there.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_00]: And yes, you bring in Lane Kiffin.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_00]: And then you bring back Will Wade.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_00]: They're kind of naturally wired to like, we're just gonna do things the weasel way.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_00]: And we'll see how it works out.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_00]: And they may have finally run up again, something here.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_00]: When I asked you while we were talking, while we were discussing kiffin, um, who has just become this, he was already this main lightning rod character in this season, well before we got to the NFL part of the thing.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: He's got, you know, he has made mortal enemies in Mississippi.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_00]: He goes down, takes over LSU, remakes the roster, should have a good team,
- 17:31[SPEAKER_00]: But then there was a release of a book this week, Lane being Lane by John Talty.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_00]: Good reporter CBS sports for that AL.com.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: And Alabama knows a lot of people in the SEC.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_00]: And it is not a glow-up of Lane Kiffin.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_00]: It is not an authorized biography, let's say.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_00]: Gets into all kinds of stuff off the court within off the field, I'm sorry, from his time at Alabama, time at Oxford, got some people by name, trashing him, got some people unnamed, trashing him.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_00]: I'm wondering, your general thoughts on Lane Kiffin
- 18:16[SPEAKER_01]: Well, full disclosure, I think last December, I reached out to Kiffin about the possibility of sort of embedding myself with the LSU program this season and writing a book about it.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_01]: Interesting.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_01]: And it never went anywhere.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_01]: We traded some text, but there was never a definitive answer.
- 18:42[SPEAKER_01]: So obviously that didn't happen.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_01]: Lane is the most polarizing and yet the most compelling figure I think in college athletics, least college football.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_00]: College athletics period.
- 18:58[SPEAKER_01]: He is compellingly flawed.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_01]: And every time we think he's headed toward being unflod,
- 19:07[SPEAKER_01]: that he somehow bears back into this.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's just who he is.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_01]: He has left a breadcrum trail mistaken choices, astounding choices, astonishing choices throughout his career in life.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_01]: I read those excerpts.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_01]: Nothing in there surprised me.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_01]: Davoswini recently sort of framed his thinking about laying in this situation.
- 19:38[SPEAKER_01]: And nothing that Davos said surprised me.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_01]: This is who he is and what you get.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_01]: But I tell you one thing, Pat, I will not be surprised if more comes out.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_01]: involved in the Alabama program back in the day.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_01]: And this person simply said, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, more to come.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_01]: But this is Lane Kiffin.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_01]: This is, this is what you get in all its glory and in all of its craziness.
- 20:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_00]: He really may have landed in the most natural place for him where they like they'll put up with a lot of stuff.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_00]: It really don't even mind again some of the mayhem as long as you win.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_00]: The winning part will see for all that's the the other amazing thing.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_00]: He's now making $13 million
- 20:43[SPEAKER_00]: The one championship, I think he's one is conference USA at Florida Atlantic, he never won a championship anywhere else now.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_00]: You could say, all right, you know, you did it did about as well as you could possibly do it all missed.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_00]: That's probably true, but NLSU, he will have a chance to, but you also have to do it.
- 20:59[SPEAKER_00]: And then unless you've they'll turn on you, here's the other thing.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_00]: Clemson coming in while I may be down on them.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_00]: Gene is not.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_00]: Gene's high on Clemson, you better walk in correct into Tiger Stadium Saturday night.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_00]: And I wonder where everyone's head is.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_00]: The players probably don't give a damn what's going on about this, although they'd sure like to know who's going to line up in the 2D?
- 21:20[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the leadership committee voted for the support fee.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_00]: That was one of the best.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_00]: That was a classic lane.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the leadership committee unanimously once these players on the on the roster.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_00]: We still haven't heard from my believes, J.C. Anderson, the backup tied in about how he feels about having a Cleveland Brown come in and he's not on the leadership committee.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he's not.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, no.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_00]: So he's on the 13 committee.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_01]: This goes through.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, all of the coaches love nothing more.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: then to talk about focus and minimizing distractions.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, keeping your mind just lazered in on the game.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_00]: And what has it been happening to LSU all week?
- 22:06[SPEAKER_00]: Total circus.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_00]: Does it affect them?
- 22:09[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_00]: We, but they better show up and be ready against Clemson.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_00]: They lose that one.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: Look out.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_01]: But Kiffin sort of,
- 22:19[SPEAKER_01]: I think he embraces the craziness and the chaos.
- 22:23[SPEAKER_01]: Sure, he does, so now will his team do the same?
- 22:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, we'll find out.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_00]: We will, we will.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_00]: And yes, he does he, I mean, clearly.
- 22:33[SPEAKER_00]: And that's another thing you read that book.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_00]: He has operated most of his life amid self-induced chaos.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_00]: And he's been rather successful for the most part.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_00]: So the game in Baton Rouge gets more and more fascinating in the closer we get to it.
- 22:49[SPEAKER_00]: We will pick that in the other games at the end here.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, really.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, we'll apologize for last week's picks.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_00]: We'll apologize preemptively for this week's picks.
- 23:00[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_00]: We'll try to do better.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_00]: But at this point, it's now it's 339.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_00]: We still have no news from Baton Rouge.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to power through.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_00]: We're moving on and we are going to talk about the actual week one slate, which we're very excited to do as well as we want to do.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_00]: We came here to talk football.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk some football, Jane.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to ask you three questions.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_00]: You give me three answers.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_00]: I'll give you mine.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_00]: Let's start with this one.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_00]: Who is the player?
- 23:30[SPEAKER_00]: You are most interested in watching this weekend.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's a player for LSU, how about that?
- 23:38[SPEAKER_01]: quarterback Sam Levin.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_01]: He played what seven, seven games last year.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_01]: He hasn't played since late October because of foot injury.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_01]: Ended up at LSU, though it took a while.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_01]: He led Arizona State to a playoff spot.
- 23:58[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the guy has the bona fides.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_01]: And he seems like the kind of,
- 24:03[SPEAKER_01]: player who would who had thrived with someone like Kiffin.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_01]: And so I'm really interested to see how that transition is going to go.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_01]: And if it meshes, if those two guys mesh, it's going to be something to behold.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to put up huge numbers.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_01]: And Alice, he will be a force.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was going to be my pick as well.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but I agree we agree that I'll diversify a little bit.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I'm I'm I'm going to go Bloomington Indiana, noon sir.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_00]: It gets even better, Gene.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_00]: Not only have I talked a lot about Indiana, I'm going to the game.
- 24:42[SPEAKER_00]: They're playing North Texas at noon Saturday.
- 24:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to that one, then I'm driving south on I-65 and going to Nashville for Sunday night came Louisville, Mississippi.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_00]: So, but I want to see Josh Hoover, the transfer quarterback from TCU,
- 24:58[SPEAKER_00]: Signetti's history with transfer quarterbacks is unbelievable.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_00]: But the thing that the differentiated went made in the end ago from really good to 16 known national champions was when Mendosa became a superstar.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_00]: And Ken Hoover replicate that at all.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not expecting him to win the high ismen be the number one pick, that sort of thing.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_00]: But can you be that super efficient quarterback that Signetti tends to have?
- 25:28[SPEAKER_00]: 3.0 Indiana miracle down there.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_00]: Can you can you can he be the guy.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_00]: So that's that's the person I'm looking at most there.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_00]: All right, head coach, you're most interested in seeing this weekend.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's a bit of a toss up.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_01]: between your guy, Brahm, and Louisville, and my guy, Dabo, at Clemson.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_01]: And I guess I'll do a lean toward Dabo, partly because of the importance of this game, partly because of where Clemson was last year, partly because Dabo hasn't been afraid to speak as mine this past week or so.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think we have this huge game
- 26:15[SPEAKER_01]: against the Tigers in Death Valley.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's like, this bizarre mirroring of each other.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I think Dabble likes to be the underdog.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_01]: And I think he kind of likes the position that his team is in right now.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_01]: And I also think it's a pretty good team.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think he's embracing what is going on in a different sort of way.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_01]: And so I'm really interested to see
- 26:42[SPEAKER_01]: What Dabble has done with this team mentally because I think in many ways it was fragile last year and it didn't know how to handle that situation.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm not sure Dabble did, but now he's had the experience of it all.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_01]: New season gets to go on the road, gets to play the role of the underdog.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_01]: And so I'm just really intrigued and fascinated by how he's gonna approach this game.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the dynamics now surrounding this I agree make this fascinating dabba was a fighter and I think loves being in a position of
- 27:17[SPEAKER_00]: being touted and criticized that sort of thing.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_00]: And also, you know, God love him.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_00]: He will speak his mind.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_00]: He will speak a lot, but he will speak his mind.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, this is embarrassing.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_00]: Was the word he used multiple times regarding the NFL to college dynamic.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_00]: And so I mean, he's walking in there.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_00]: Like he's not going to walk in there and try to play nice with Langkiff and he doesn't like where things have gone and there was nothing he would love more than to win that game if he does, you know how their press conferences are.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_00]: This game is going to be over at like midnight or you know, I may be earlier and that may be 11 30 whatever that nobody will hear from Davow to a 12 15 AM and then he will talk till son up.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, dawn he will still be talking.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think so.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he'll be on the 6 a.m. out of Baton Rouge through Atlanta.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_00]: All right, and the other thing too, it's starting to quarterback Chris Visena.
- 28:18[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see how that goes for him.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_00]: For me, the coach, I'm very much interested in seeing his Kyle Whittingham in Mason Blue.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's a good one.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_00]: going to be a jarring look to a degree guy you've seen in Utah Red for 20 years in a new very hope for a high profile place taking over and I think could add some real grab a toss and credibility to the Wolverines.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_00]: There's a good choice.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_00]: Some things and I think sneaky sneak a good opponent here.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think they'll have trouble with Western Michigan, but Western Michigan's probably the best team in the Mac.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_00]: And so they're going to have to be ready.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm looking forward to seeing what the Wolverine's look like in Game One under cow winning him.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_00]: All right, coordinator, you're most interested in this weekend.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_01]: Will must champ at Texas.
- 29:08[SPEAKER_01]: Good call defensive coordinator, you know, all we've heard during the off season is, you know, wow, he's bringing me intensities.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_01]: He's bringing, he's elevated the way that they're going to approach a season on the defensive side.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_01]: He's a difference maker.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_01]: Well, now you play Texas State and I understand Texas State isn't OU or A&M, but they have a
- 29:35[SPEAKER_01]: Pretty nifty little offense and got a good quarterback and see some good wide receivers and they can score points.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_01]: And so it'll be interesting if all this talk trickles down to performance.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_01]: And so we'll see if the intensity translates against a much lesser opponent.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_01]: And so I'm really, again, intrigued by what could happen with this guy, who Sark has made no qualms about.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_01]: He has said, I hired this guy to be a difference maker, and now we see if it happens.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I love that call.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_00]: I talked to Colton McCoy last week who was at Texas when Muschamp was defense coordinator then and he raped about him.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_00]: He thinks this is going to be a big improvement for the Texas defense said that Muschamp just a super sharp mind who even in practice really made Colton McCoy better with what he threw at him.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_01]: Interesting.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm going to go with John David Baker, offensive coordinator at Ole Miss, came aboard from East Carolina and East Carolina.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_00]: I had a good attack the last couple years, but you're replacing Charlie Weiss, Jr. who went to LSU and Charlie was very highly thought of and you're taking over now, Trinidad, Chambers, Kwan, Lacy, a lot of people would love to call plays for that unit, but you got to get it done, got to show you can do it as well.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_00]: as wasted last year and you're doing it against a Louisville team that you mentioned brah, I mean, that dude is upset special.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 31:14[SPEAKER_00]: He has pulled a ton of them and will come in as a significant underdog neutral field and LSU is going to have to be ready for that game and we'll see if the, you know, should Trinidad Chambers look they and Lacy actually the Ole Miss just
- 31:32[SPEAKER_00]: that included like taking over the sphere in Las Vegas and and like projecting on that for the for these guys for what's cool.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I was very cool.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, go bigger, go home.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's hard to go bigger than the sphere in terms of advertising your guys.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_00]: So, lot of expectations, but a lot of kind of a bullseye on them at an end of the season.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_00]: All right, Gene, another topic here, one of the, I guess this is kind of like the LSU court situation, we're like, I can't believe we're here.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_00]: I can't believe we're discussing this, but we are Penn State, went ahead and announced that they are opening the paternal family football experience
- 32:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_00]: The paternal family football experience in your opinion, your considerable estimable opinion, good idea, bad idea, worst idea ever.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_01]: I could have sat here and listed 10,000 things that I thought would happen in college football
- 32:55[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, the paternal family football experience.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_01]: That would not have been one of the 10,000 options.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, first of all, I don't even know what that means.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_01]: The paternal family football experience.
- 33:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 33:07[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, I do know this.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure there is a faction of Penn State fans who are absolutely applauding this and saying it's about time and and we need to honor
- 33:20[SPEAKER_01]: the football memory of Joe Paterno.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_01]: And I'll be the first to agree that you can't tell the history a Penn State football without the history of Joe Paterno.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_01]: But you also can't tell the history of Joe Paterno at Penn State without also including
- 33:39[SPEAKER_01]: all of the details involving his glorious end there.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_01]: And so they're going to have his desk and shoes and artifacts in there.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_01]: And they say they're going to have a curated timeline of paternose career there.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_01]: I have not seen that timeline, but if you're going to do an accurate depiction,
- 34:02[SPEAKER_01]: of his professional career there, then a better include details that they might not necessarily want to acknowledge, but you would be disingenuous if you don't.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's the thing.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_00]: You cannot whitewash the history of all of it.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_00]: you know, decades of glorious times and, you know, great success, but then an ending that's the ugliest thing we've probably ever seen in college sports.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_00]: So I cringe, frankly, at this, I don't know how you handle it properly, in this which case I would not handle it.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_00]: I would not do this if I were Penn State.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_00]: I just think you were, you're inviting, you're ripping open some old wounds
- 34:49[SPEAKER_00]: legacy is permanently complicated to say the least.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_00]: So, okay, moving on, you pointed this out.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_00]: This is great.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_00]: This week, week one, it's actually the third, so we're 19 years and two days after the 19th anniversary, basically, of AppState, shocking Michigan season up in our 2007,
- 35:13[SPEAKER_00]: uh, indelible moment in the 21st century telling of college football.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_00]: Where were you when it happened?
- 35:22[SPEAKER_00]: What was your reaction?
- 35:23[SPEAKER_00]: And I really want to know if you think something like that could ever happen again.
- 35:28[SPEAKER_01]: Pat, I believe I was at game one of the worst stories.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_01]: Dodgers, hey.
- 35:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we're we're trusting your memory again here risky.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_01]: I looked it up.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_01]: It was it was September 1st 2007 and I actually looked up the schedules of games that day and there was nothing that was overly compelling so I very well could have just been home watching it or watching you know the cut in to it.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, I'm sure I was like everybody else.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_01]: This can't be happening.
- 36:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 36:05[SPEAKER_01]: How is it happening?
- 36:07[SPEAKER_01]: But, but it did happen.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_01]: And it was extraordinary and it was a reminder of one of the many reasons why we love college football.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, that was Lloyd cars last season.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, at Michigan.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_01]: And they they lost that game.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_01]: I think they lost the next week at Oregon.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_01]: And then I think they
- 36:31[SPEAKER_01]: So it was, it was beautiful.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_01]: It was, it was everything you want.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_01]: And can't it happen again?
- 36:38[SPEAKER_01]: Of course.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_01]: In fact, what, two years ago, 2024, it happened against Northern Illinois with Notre Dame.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_01]: So that's what makes it so great.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_01]: It can't happen.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, we've been,
- 36:55[SPEAKER_01]: We'll make fun of the week 1 schedule.
- 36:57[SPEAKER_01]: There are some good games, but there are a lot of teams favored by 40 plus or 30 plus.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe possibly, probably, somebody is going to get a scare.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_01]: And maybe one of those scares turned into an upset.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_01]: But I definitely think it can happen again.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_00]: I, but we'll see if an FCS team can beat a ranked after the, well, it maybe it will happen.
- 37:24[SPEAKER_00]: I just feel like we've created a widening Gulf between.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_00]: the top of the sport and the FCS level.
- 37:31[SPEAKER_01]: Well, Northern Illinois, obviously, is an FCS.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_00]: So, but that's a good comparison.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_00]: Because that one was also like incomprehensible.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_00]: So, I was that day.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_00]: We were both working for ESPN.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_00]: OK.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_00]: I was embedded with Western Kentucky for their first ever FBS game at Florida, defending national champ in Florida.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_00]: And this is, you know, these assignments are great because the school is so happy to have you and you can do anything you want.
- 38:00[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 38:00[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm like everywhere with them and David Ellson, who's the coach then and a great guy has me in the locker room beforehand and, you know, they are, they are talking it up and screaming it up and,
- 38:16[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to say it's hot in the swamp.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_00]: There's nothing compared to Jimmy Fikes field in bowling green, you know, in the whole thing.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_00]: And then he broke that a sledge hammer, which had been an artifact of the program since Jack Harbaugh had won when they won the FCS Championship and he smashes a Florida Gator helmet.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_00]: Destroyed the thing and holds it up and the locker room's going insane.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_00]: They run out on the field for their parade warm-ups and everything.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_00]: They come back in, they're last thing getting ready.
- 38:46[SPEAKER_00]: They've been on the field now.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_00]: They've seen Cam Newton, Tim Teebo, and uniform.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_00]: Elson, much more subdued.
- 38:53[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to have to hit Teebo with multiple bodies.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_00]: Got to have to, you know, like, oh, my God.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_01]: How was this a night game, by the way?
- 39:00[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, day game.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_00]: OK. Day game.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_00]: So this is all going down.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_00]: I'm covering this, and I'm like, I got a great story.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_00]: This is all at the sledjammers.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely, the lead blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_00]: And your friend of mine, David Duffy, is reaching me during the game like Appalachian State is beating Michigan.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_00]: You have to drop everything and write this.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, oh, oh, I guess I better.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_00]: And so went back to the hotel and wrote some column, you know, completely out of my, you know, what on Appalachian State winning.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_01]: Poor Western did, did Western Kentucky get any
- 39:36[SPEAKER_01]: anything at all from you.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_00]: And we, oh, yeah, I wrote the story.
- 39:39[SPEAKER_00]: They lost like 40, they were down 47 to 7 or something.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_00]: And then we had a lightning delay.
- 39:44[SPEAKER_00]: And then they just called it because seriously.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_00]: And, and I ended up writing the story for like Monday or Tuesday.
- 39:51[SPEAKER_00]: But it was, it was literally preempted by the, by the happenings in the big house.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_01]: Do you remember the names of the quarterbacks for Michigan and
- 40:06[SPEAKER_00]: Was it it wouldn't no take force to get it was later right from Michigan.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_00]: So no, I don't what you got.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's Chad, honey.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_00]: Ah, there you go.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_00]: And then, oh, is it like Antoine Edwards or something?
- 40:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was like our Monty our Monty.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_00]: It was that was yeah.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, really good FCS quarterback.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, any long NFL career.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_01]: good call.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_01]: This cool just to go back and just think about it.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah.
- 40:35[SPEAKER_00]: And that was, wasn't that the first game on Big Ten Network?
- 40:38[SPEAKER_00]: Talk about getting them given them a great launching pad.
- 40:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_00]: I might be wrong there.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, all right, Gene, along those lines.
- 40:47[SPEAKER_01]: OK.
- 40:49[SPEAKER_00]: Can you put one ranked team on up settler this weekend against an unranked opponent may not quite the app state versus Michigan but giving me one major upset you're not calling it but it could happen.
- 41:03[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you saw the Missouri State team captain, do you see what he said?
- 41:10[SPEAKER_01]: No, they're going to know about, they're going to know where Springfield Missouri is after Texas A&M's going to know where it is after this game.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_01]: But you know, I got some stones when you're 40 and a half point dogs in the game, but I mean,
- 41:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, sure.
- 41:31[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 41:33[SPEAKER_01]: I will say Clemson.
- 41:35[SPEAKER_01]: I, you know, it's, they're at the edge.
- 41:37[SPEAKER_01]: They're, they're, they're the next team.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_01]: They're 26 basically.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're rarely counts.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_01]: So it barely counts.
- 41:46[SPEAKER_01]: If you're not going to let me include that one, then I guess I would.
- 41:49[SPEAKER_01]: And, and there aren't a lot that that we can.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_01]: we can use from with these games this week.
- 41:57[SPEAKER_01]: Then I guess I'd have to go with the FSU putting SMU on upset alert.
- 42:02[SPEAKER_01]: There you go.
- 42:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's a weird week.
- 42:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's a weird week.
- 42:06[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, yeah, it's not a good week.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_00]: I had another thing college sports can't quite get right.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's just having a good opening week of the season.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_00]: But everybody wants a soft entry.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to say, I look, I think Oregon's
- 42:22[SPEAKER_00]: As always, very good program at good player retention.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_00]: Got a good quarterback back back.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think they're going to win in Austin, but I think they will go in and give the ducks a battle for the most of the day at the very least there.
- 42:37[SPEAKER_01]: So, well, and I just want to just mention this, you don't have to go anywhere with it, but we've seen the news today about Greg Sankey,
- 42:51[SPEAKER_01]: We might be interested in expanding the playoff if we can get a commitment from the big 10 to play 10 power four teams.
- 43:02[SPEAKER_01]: And there's yes, yes.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_01]: So that could change the dynamics of a week one.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_00]: true true we might get some more good games then absolutely yeah that was that's another bit of news that dropped here today sakey saying yes if you if y'all play tin will consider it and then patiti apparently came back today big ten commissioner Tony patiti and said yeah you know if that's what it'll take for twenty four right yeah yeah yeah so i
- 43:30[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want a 2014 plan.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_00]: I don't either.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_00]: I weepeth a thought of it.
- 43:34[SPEAKER_00]: But it looks like we're headed that way.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_00]: Again, can anybody just do something the fans actually want?
- 43:40[SPEAKER_00]: We don't want losses.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_00]: We don't want to be in court on the Thursday of the week one.
- 43:45[SPEAKER_00]: We don't want a 2014 playoff.
- 43:47[SPEAKER_00]: We don't want NFL players on the field.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_00]: Anything else?
- 43:51[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, can we just put us listen to Pat?
- 43:53[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you've forgot to listen to him.
- 43:55[SPEAKER_00]: We'll put out a small like fans bill of rights here.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_00]: There's a bigger bill in the market.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_00]: That's a whole other thing.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_00]: That's a whole other thing that we probably don't even need to get into.
- 44:06[SPEAKER_00]: But they're still trying with that bill.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_00]: Doesn't look good.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_00]: House is cutting their time in DC short by two weeks.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_00]: Good luck.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_00]: Good luck.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_01]: You know what, you need the extra two weeks there.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they're looking at they're looking at that college sports bill saying we don't want to deal with that forget it if we're not there.
- 44:27[SPEAKER_00]: We can't deal with it classic classic dog.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_00]: If you're not in the office, then things pile up on your desk.
- 44:33[SPEAKER_00]: So I do I didn't know.
- 44:34[SPEAKER_00]: All right, Jean, it's time to pick some games.
- 44:38[SPEAKER_01]: Let's do it.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, let's the winners and state dinners segment here.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go ahead and get the full cost accounting out for last week.
- 44:47[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 44:49[SPEAKER_00]: You were all in four.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_00]: I was one and three.
- 44:52[SPEAKER_00]: Uh-huh.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_00]: Pitiful, disastrous, awful job on week zero.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_00]: Do you have an excuse for going, oh, and four genome?
- 45:01[SPEAKER_01]: I, I'm totally comfortable with that.
- 45:04[SPEAKER_01]: How that turned out?
- 45:05[SPEAKER_01]: It was week zero and I won zero.
- 45:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 45:10[SPEAKER_01]: So I felt like I fulfilled, you know, what I should do that week.
- 45:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_01]: No, I was horrific.
- 45:21[SPEAKER_01]: You and I were texting each other.
- 45:23[SPEAKER_01]: We're like, you were at one point going.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sweating out Eastern Michigan.
- 45:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Eastern Michigan Sacramento State.
- 45:30[SPEAKER_00]: That's all I got right.
- 45:31[SPEAKER_00]: It's pitiful.
- 45:32[SPEAKER_00]: I've never been so proud of that team on the gray field.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_00]: We're pacing ourselves, but that's it.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_00]: We can only go up from here.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_00]: So let's start trying to go up.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, please.
- 45:44[SPEAKER_00]: And let's start with the game we've been discussing.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_00]: Clemson at LSU, Tigers of the Upstate of South Carolina, getting 10 against the Tigers of the Bayou, which side are you on?
- 45:58[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I mean, I've made it pretty clear.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_01]: I'm, I'm, I'm Ryder die with Clemson, at least for now.
- 46:06[SPEAKER_01]: If you could tell me how it's going to play out in quarterback situation for Clemson and, and Diablo said, he might play two quarterbacks in this game.
- 46:14[SPEAKER_01]: I feel a little better about it, but I've said Clemson from the start.
- 46:19[SPEAKER_01]: I'll stick with them.
- 46:20[SPEAKER_01]: I'll I'll take those 10 points and, you know, hope.
- 46:26[SPEAKER_00]: I'm taking the ten as well.
- 46:27[SPEAKER_00]: That's a pretty big number.
- 46:29[SPEAKER_00]: And again, I just think the two malt here has been enough that I just, again, lane operates well in two malt, but still.
- 46:39[SPEAKER_00]: This is a lot of two malt, and I'm still not convinced that no matter what he says, that the locker room is completely cupacetic with guys who had no part of the program sailing in in the last week of August and taking playing time.
- 46:52[SPEAKER_01]: So you realize you're agreeing with me, though.
- 46:55[SPEAKER_00]: I do, and I did last week, which is what got me into this situation.
- 46:59[SPEAKER_00]: You kept making games like I'm going in, I'm anxious.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_00]: I'm an idiot, but I'll go with Clampson.
- 47:06[SPEAKER_00]: I will say the other thing, one other thing with LSU that I can.
- 47:10[SPEAKER_00]: like the annoyance of them trying to pull this last minute gimmick with these NFL guys, they might have the most expensive roster in the country.
- 47:20[SPEAKER_00]: They spent reportedly up to like $50 million on this roster.
- 47:26[SPEAKER_00]: Is that more than the Saints?
- 47:29[SPEAKER_00]: might not be more than the Saints, but it might be more than every other college team.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_00]: And if you did that and you still are out scuffling around for guys, what did you, how much money did you potentially waste?
- 47:40[SPEAKER_00]: What are you doing?
- 47:42[SPEAKER_00]: When is enough?
- 47:44[SPEAKER_00]: The biggest question that exists in college football to me, when is enough for an immediate of topics?
- 47:51[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, Sunday night, Nashville, Titan Stadium, the new one's almost built.
- 47:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be spectacular, although it's an indoor stadium and those can only be so good.
- 48:01[SPEAKER_00]: But good game though, Louisville against Mississippi, Cardinals getting six and a half.
- 48:10[SPEAKER_00]: Lincoln King holds day viewing as they're starting quarterback had been backing up Julian Sayon at Ohio State kind of more of a dual threat guy Jeff from really hasn't had a dual threat quarterback at Louisville and really I'm not sure whether he had one to Purdue either so this can be a little bit of a change up there.
- 48:29[SPEAKER_00]: Mississippi rolling in with all that momentum off of.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_00]: Last year, six and a half is the number.
- 48:37[SPEAKER_00]: Rebels favored by six and a half.
- 48:39[SPEAKER_00]: I am going to jump in with the cardinals here again.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_00]: Jeff Brom, upset master.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_00]: And I just think this sets up well for them.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_00]: See if the defense is up to it.
- 48:51[SPEAKER_00]: Huge challenge, obviously.
- 48:52[SPEAKER_00]: Take care of Chambers and Lacy.
- 48:54[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm going to say Louisville hangs around, hangs around.
- 48:58[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe even leads and gets nipped at the wire.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_01]: Boy, we got problems buddy.
- 49:06[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
- 49:08[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_01]: I've got a man crush on Brom too and you can go and look up the number of upsets that he's pulled and this seems to me to set up just perfectly and it feels like it's going to be kind of a high-high-ish scoring game
- 49:26[SPEAKER_01]: In if that's the case, I think Louisville can score points.
- 49:30[SPEAKER_01]: And I think they can stay within that six and a half points.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_00]: So now we're both all in two for the lead.
- 49:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we're going down together again.
- 49:37[SPEAKER_00]: All right, same night, same play at the same time.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_00]: Again, what are we doing?
- 49:42[SPEAKER_00]: God, spoke football, why?
- 49:44[SPEAKER_00]: Why?
- 49:45[SPEAKER_00]: Two of the three most compelling games of the opening weekend are at the exact same time.
- 49:50[SPEAKER_00]: Wisconsin against Notre Dame in Lambo.
- 49:53[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty awesome, should be a lot of fun.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_00]: They had played a couple of years ago in soldier field.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_00]: I went to that.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_00]: That was a great atmosphere.
- 50:00[SPEAKER_00]: This one should be as well.
- 50:02[SPEAKER_00]: Wisconsin is not what it has been, but they're getting 20 and a half, really kind of, I think Luke fickle must show something here early.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe not win, but you've got to play well.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think against the Irish, if you're going to,
- 50:18[SPEAKER_00]: maintain hope going forward.
- 50:20[SPEAKER_00]: But what which side are you landing on here in Notre Dame giving the 20 and a half was constant getting it.
- 50:26[SPEAKER_01]: I've been to a game didn't Wisconsin play else you at Lambo they did number of years ago.
- 50:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was at that game not the Dodgers A's game and Lambo's as close to a college experience
- 50:41[SPEAKER_01]: As you'll get in the NFL, I mean, it's just it's it's a great place to see a ballgame and it feels like a college stadium in a way.
- 50:50[SPEAKER_01]: I think Wisconsin's going to be better.
- 50:53[SPEAKER_01]: I just don't think they're going to be Notre Dame better.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_01]: And I know 20 and a half is a lot, but I could see Notre Dame winning this by 21.
- 51:02[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it wouldn't surprise me at all.
- 51:05[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll I'll take Notre Dame and lay the points.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_00]: just for the site for the sake of self-preservation and lack of repetition.
- 51:15[SPEAKER_00]: I'll take Wisconsin.
- 51:17[SPEAKER_01]: I was, you were going to chat with Notre Dame, but you're switching because I took Notre Dame.
- 51:20[SPEAKER_00]: Correct.
- 51:21[SPEAKER_00]: You are an absolute hex burger.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not following me again.
- 51:26[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm like radio active.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_00]: You are you go.
- 51:29[SPEAKER_00]: I see you going one way.
- 51:31[SPEAKER_00]: I run the other.
- 51:32[SPEAKER_00]: Gotcha.
- 51:32[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 51:33[SPEAKER_00]: That's that's I'm taking the beagers to at least keep it close.
- 51:38[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 51:39[SPEAKER_00]: With the last one before the lock of the week.
- 51:42[SPEAKER_00]: Really, an interesting game on the West Coast, UCLA at Cal.
- 51:50[SPEAKER_00]: Now, UCLA just fired its athletic director, Martin Jormand, part of the reason why they're running a big old deficit.
- 52:00[SPEAKER_00]: Part of the reason they are running a big old deficit is they've got to pay Calamoni.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_00]: every year to Cal for yeah, ditching them in the implosion of the packed 12 UCLA runs off to the big ten.
- 52:15[SPEAKER_00]: Cal is left a drift and jumps in with Stanford to go to the ACC.
- 52:21[SPEAKER_00]: So UCLA is eventually going to make more money in the big ten, but for now they're losing money in part of the reasons because they're given it to the golden bears.
- 52:30[SPEAKER_00]: This is old old rivalry goes back a million years.
- 52:35[SPEAKER_00]: uh... to you see states uh... to you see system state schools very good schools not necessarily good football programs but both new coaches objesnie at ucla tosh la poie et cal uh... the brooins are laying one and a half were you landing on this one well it's a classic big can a cc match up yeah it is
- 53:01[SPEAKER_01]: Well, what are we doing?
- 53:03[SPEAKER_01]: But it is a classic matchup if you just ignore the conference affiliations in a way.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_01]: Poor Bob Chesney, he's probably worried that UCLA Chancellor's going to ask him to work pro bono also as new ideas.
- 53:21[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think there's any way UCLA goes 3 and 9 this season.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think they'll be improved.
- 53:26[SPEAKER_01]: I think Chesney's a hell of a coach.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_01]: As you mentioned, there's two good quarterbacks in this game.
- 53:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be a fun game to watch.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_01]: But I'll take UCLA in this one and I don't have a problem with that one and a half points at all.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_00]: Good to hear it because I'm taking the golden bears.
- 53:45[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of like the mojo.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure you're going to get rabid atmosphere and Berkeley, but whatever happens for you, they can conjure they'll have some.
- 53:53[SPEAKER_00]: And I think, Jaron, Kiowa, Seca puttella, if I got that right, Paul Gisiff not the Cal Quarterback is really good, very dynamic.
- 54:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 54:04[SPEAKER_00]: Can't wait to see him, I think he's one of those guys that could have taken a big jump forward this season.
- 54:09[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm gonna take the golden bears, not just cover, obviously, if it's that small spread, but to win the thing and get started on could be a very interesting season there.
- 54:19[SPEAKER_00]: Could be your lock of the week, too, maybe.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see you in a moment.
- 54:22[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, okay.
- 54:23[SPEAKER_00]: Fine.
- 54:24[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, fine.
- 54:25[SPEAKER_00]: What do you got?
- 54:25[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see it, lock of the week.
- 54:28[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I don't know, Pat, for God's sake.
- 54:35[SPEAKER_01]: And they're given 13 and a half points to Tulsa at Tulsa.
- 54:41[SPEAKER_01]: Tulsa beat Oklahoma State last year.
- 54:44[SPEAKER_01]: Oklahoma State, of course, as we all know, it's just gruesomely off of 11 and 11.
- 54:52[SPEAKER_01]: The, you know, Eric Morris coming in there, a misdemeanor, a quarterback, other guys from that program coming in.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_01]: I think Oklahoma states can be much improved this season.
- 55:03[SPEAKER_01]: Tulsa's a solid team, solid program, nothing against them.
- 55:07[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just going to, I just I believe in Oklahoma state this season, at least in this game and so I'll give the points.
- 55:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, almost a state's gonna be fascinating.
- 55:18[SPEAKER_00]: And see, they're kind of trying to pull a signal out of here, bring that guy in.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_00]: You bring as many of his players as you can.
- 55:24[SPEAKER_00]: And these are all high profile position guys.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_00]: Like you said, quarterback running back receiver from a high octane offense.
- 55:34[SPEAKER_00]: So I like that.
- 55:35[SPEAKER_00]: Also like Tray Lane, what he's doing at Tulsa.
- 55:37[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that's gonna be a sneaky good game.
- 55:42[SPEAKER_00]: My luck.
- 55:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm Tom Gordon-Matchen, baby.
- 55:45[SPEAKER_00]: I'd like a.
- 55:46[SPEAKER_00]: It worked last week with Mr. Michigan.
- 55:49[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to take Miami, Ohio to cover 18 and a half.
- 55:55[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry, wait, it's 16 and a half.
- 55:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, let's get that right.
- 55:59[SPEAKER_00]: I like 18 and a half better, but six, that can do.
- 56:03[SPEAKER_00]: at Pittsburgh, I know, Cantor producer, Pittsburgh guy, he's probably outraged at this call.
- 56:09[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, Miami has gotten some money and they've put it into their basketball and football programs and so they've got decent roster.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_00]: Pit is what it is they were putting tarps on the upper deck to get ready for the season opener because nobody goes so I think Miami goes in and at least keeps it competitive and loses by 16 or less on Saturday.
- 56:36[SPEAKER_01]: All right, good luck to you.
- 56:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, good luck to you.
- 56:39[SPEAKER_00]: We'll we'll text in our wallowing and misery and embarrassment again, uh, uh, throughout the weekend.
- 56:47[SPEAKER_00]: So, all right, everybody.
- 56:48[SPEAKER_00]: That's our show.
- 56:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's 413 still no rulings out of Louisiana.
- 56:52[SPEAKER_00]: So you're going to have to get that news elsewhere.
- 56:55[SPEAKER_00]: but we'll be prepared to react to it next week and also to preview a while week two should be a great week to Texas Ohio State and a bunch more next Thursday.
- 57:05[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for listening and watching and we'll talk to you later.
